Quenching Quince
The perfect choice for a dry throat, fiery stomach and longing heart. Just Juice offers you the opportunity to enjoy the legendary juice of quince, revered by many cultures for centuries. Quince (Cydonia oblonga) also commonly referred to as the “golden apple is one of the earliest-known fruits. Believed by some to be the forbidden fruit, eaten by Eve in the Garden of Eden, Quince was also the mythical prize given to Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love, in celebration of her astounding beauty. Quince has continued through the ages as a symbol of temptation and love, likely in part due to its incredibly delicious and healthful juice. Although similar to pears and apples in shape and appearance, the unique flavour and fragrance of quince, hinting of pineapple, guava and pear, can reportedly perfume a room or the breath of those that consume it. To this day, Quince juice is recognized by Unani Medical Practitioners as a key component of stomach ulcer therapy. The juice is also recorded as having been used, traditionally, as a mouthwash or gargle to treat mouth ulcers, gum problems and sore throats and was consumed for its digestive and blood lipid lowering properties. Although the quince has been cultivated for thousands of years in Asia, it has largely retained the character of a wild fruit. Just Juice captures the ancient tradition of this juice by using only fruit grown organically in the Caucasus region, where the quince originated.
Just Juice is available exclusively from Puresource. 1-888-313-3369 VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 78

heard a story the other day and I need to share it. A young man wanted to make a lot of money, so he went to an old guru for advice. The guru said to him, “If you want to be as successful as I am, meet me tomorrow at the beach.” The young man got there at 4:00 am, eager to begin. The old man grabbed his hand and said, “How badly do you want to be successful?” The young man replied, “Really badly!” and the guru told him to walk out into the water. The young man walked into the water until he was waist deep, and thought to himself, “This guy is crazy. I want to make money and he has me out Trent E. Nellis - Publisher, Vista Magazine here swimming. I didn’t ask to be a lifeguard. This old guy is out of his mind.” The old man told him to come out a little further, up to the level of his shoulders. The young man walked deeper into the water, thinking to himself all the while, “This old guy is really nuts. Whatever he is doing must be working because he is successful, but he is crazy. I want to make money.” The old man encouraged him to come out a little further, so the young guy waded out to about the level of his mouth, but he glanced toward shore and hesitated, revealing his indecision. The old guru said to him: “I thought you wanted to be successful?” The young man struggled to reply, “I do.” “Okay, then,” said the guru, “walk out a little further.” So the young man walked even deeper into the water. The guru then pushed the young man’s head under the water and held it there until the young man was kicking, scratching and fighting for a breath of air. He held his head down just until the young man was about to pass out, then let him back up for air. He gave the young man a second or two to recover, then said to him, “When you want to succeed as badly as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.” Most of us say we want to be successful, but do we really mean it? Success doesn’t necessarily mean making money, but it does mean making sacrifices. Most people don’t want to be successful as badly as they want to party, as badly as they want to eat, as badly as they want to sleep. Succeeding at whatever you do is recognizing that the effort never stops and the objective of your success requires constant attention. When you allow nothing to get in your way no matter how great the obstacle you face, such as gasping for a precious breath of air, you can be successful. Success requires that you understand you have it inside you to do anything you choose. When you get to the point where all you want to do is be successful as badly as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.

he latest NPI Watch newsletter included an article by Todd Runestad entitled Pharma bias still present in supplement research, commenting on a recent scientific study in The Netherlands on the effects of supplements and whole foods on pharmaceutical drug dosing, effectiveness and side effects. The article noted: “Academia and the physician channels need to get away from the pharma bias and open to the idea of nutrition’s fundamental role in optimizing human health.” It got me thinking about how we may not be aware of it, but as the summer comes to a close, we fall into the winter-long trap of “pharma-response” all too readily. During summer, we are outdoors much of the time, enjoying the beach, the lake or the park. We enjoy fresh local produce and mounds of beautiful berries, rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients. We are in touch with our health and vitality more readily in these bare-skinned months of connectedness to nature and environment. But when the skies begin to darken and those berries are no longer available, we cover our skin and spend more time indoors. Cold and flu season creeps up on us. And before we know it, we are reaching for off-the-shelf medications to get us through the night without coughing so we can get to work on time in the morning. We need to remind ourselves that wellness is lifestyle driven. Those berries are still available in frozen form at any time of year. The summer’s vitamin D is also available in supplement form. With fitness, continued fresh air, and a diet rich in varied fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, we can continue to feel our vivaciously healthy selves even as the sun sets a little earlier each day. Before reaching for that cold remedy, consider the all-natural approaches in this issue of Vista to help combat cold and flu, and remember to breathe deeply and eat your blueberries! Also in this issue, Marilyn Denis, queen of Toronto daytime entertainment and syndicated Canada-wide, dishes the goods on season two of The Marilyn Denis Show, and celebrates her 25th year as co-host of CHUM-FM’s morning show. Check out her secrets to keeping work and life healthy, invigorating and always a good time.

Controlling Blood Sugar and
Preventing Diabetes
By Marva Ward CNP
M
etabolic homeostasis is the consistent balance of the human body’s energy, required to maintain cellular health and function. One of the key factors in maintaining metabolic homeostasis is the tight regulation of blood sugar (or glucose). It is the job of the pancreas to respond to fluctuating glucose levels by secreting the appropriate hormones. Beta cells are scattered throughout the pancreas, storing and releasing insulin as needed. After a meal, the amount of insulin secreted into the blood increases as blood glucose rises. As blood glucose falls, insulin secretion decreases. In response to the insulin, cells (muscle cells, red blood cells and fat cells) take glucose in from the blood, which ultimately brings blood sugar levels back to the normal range. In contrast, glycogen is secreted by the alpha cells of the pancreas when blood glucose is low. The release of glycogen stimulates the liver to release glucose from its cells into the blood, ultimately raising blood sugar levels. Blood glucose levels are considered normal when the reading is between 70 mg/dl and 110 mg/dl. Blood glucose levels below 70mg/dl results in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar); while blood glucose levels of 180mg/dl or more is termed hyperglycemia (high blood sugar or diabetes).
Hypoglycemia on the Rise
Hypoglycemia occurs when: • your body’s glucose supply is used up too quickly, • glucose is released into the bloodstream too slowly, or • too much insulin is released into the bloodstream. Within the naturopathic community, the typical western diet is believed to promote hypoglycemia as large amounts of refined and processed carbohydrates are consumed with very little fibre. For individuals suffering from hypoglycemia, refined carbohydrates and sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream rapidly, leading to a quick spike in blood sugar. The body overreacts to this rise in blood sugar by secreting an excess amount of insulin. This large amount of insulin consequently drives the blood sugar down too low, resulting in the symptoms of hypoglycemia. The correlation between the North American diet, hypoglycemia and ultimately (for many) the diagnosis of diabetes is an aggressively studied and widely accepted fact. In 2003, the Public Health Agency of Canada responded to the alarming rise in diabetes by publishing a report – The National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS) – which became a part of the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System (CCDSS) initiative.
In 2009, this publication reported the following statistics: • The age-standardized prevalence of diagnosed diabetes increased by 21 percent between 2003 and 2007. • Approximately 2 million Canadians aged one and older (6.2% of the population or about 1 in 16 people) were living with diagnosed diabetes in 2007 (5.9 percent of girls/women and 6.6 percent of boys/men).
12
VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 78
• Projections indicate that by 2012 almost 2.8 million Canadians will be living with diagnosed diabetes (an estimated annual percent increase of about 6 percent per year with an overall increase of about 25 percent from 2007). • The consequences to the individual and society were also outlined in this publication; from more frequent visits to the doctor or hospital to, ultimately, a shorter life expectancy.
Lifestyle is Key
An encouraging statistic is that 90 percent of individuals diagnosed with diabetes are reported to have type 2 diabetes, whereas just 10 percent have type 1 diabetes (which is the incurable form). If we consider that lifestyle is a strong contributor to the onset of hypoglycemia and type 2 diabetes, then recovery is certainly attainable. Simple changes in lifestyle and nutritional choices along with consistent exercise have proven to be a successful road map to recovery. Consuming a high-fibre diet slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, which will help to prevent rapid spikes in blood sugar. Getting adequate amounts of fibre from diet alone can be a challenge for many, so additional supplementation is often the solution. A visit to a local health food store will provide an array of fibre options that will complement any dietary regimen. Here are just a few of the products available: • Glucomannan (Konjac Root): A number of studies over the past decade have shown remarkable results for diabetic individuals supplementing with konjac root. • Flax seed meal: Provides both soluble and insoluble fibre. • Jerusalem Artichoke (Inulin): A source of soluble fibre and a prebiotic (stimulates the growth of good bacteria in the colon). • Psyllium fibre: An effective soluble fibre solution. In addition, there are several key supplements that help to promote blood sugar balance. • Chromium: An essential trace mineral that works with insulin to support healthy blood glucose levels. Consider taking niacin with chromium as niacin has been shown to help facilitate the uptake of glucose in the body. • Cinnamon: Used throughout history to promote healthy digestion and metabolism. Several studies have concluded that cinnamon may improve blood glucose balance and LDL cholesterol levels. No discussion of blood sugar control would be complete without stressing the importance of addressing not only what you eat, but also when and how much you eat. Consuming small, frequent, low-glycemic meals throughout the day is key in controlling blood sugar levels and ultimately maintaining healthy metabolic function.

Are Your
Skincare Products Truly
“Natural”? By Jessica Smith
O
ur skin is the largest organ we have. It is both our largest receptor and our greatest protector. Millions of people over the last century have questioned how we can better protect our skin, and how we can find products that will heal us safely and effectively, without causing further damage? An overwhelming number of ailments affect our skin, ranging from psoriasis and eczema to general itches and undiagnosed rashes, yet there are so many potential cures. When we walk down the aisles of our favorite store, we are inundated with a plethora of products that claim to help or cure our particular ailment. The question that many of us are now asking is whether these products are actually helping. Are they addressing the symptoms, or are they actually acting on the cause of the particular skin problem? The answer most of us come up with is: I don’t know. Some of us now regularly check the labels of products for the following: parabens, sodium laurel sulfates, PEGs, pthalates, propolyene glycol, MEA, DEA, TEA, or silicone free disclaimers. This is a good start; however, we need to look deeper. We need to begin to understand that many of the products we are putting on our skin are synthetic, or even worse, have commercially grown ingredients that are not naturally pesticide-free. Yes, it’s true! If you are not sure that the ingredients in your skincare products are natural, wildcrafted, and/or
14

organic, you may be slathering yourself with pesticides and synthetics. That is something none of us wants. During my research into skincare lines, I have come across many products that claim to be natural, chemical and pesticide-free. However, once you look at the labels, you find that they are not completely natural; although they may use some natural ingredients, they have others that are far from natural. One product line surveyed was listed as “all natural”; however, when browsing the label, I came across the ingredient Japanese honeysuckle. I was not familiar with this ingredient, so I decided to look it up. After doing some research, I found that Japanese honeysuckle is actually identical to the synthetic ingredient paraben. We all have to be vigilant when purchasing our skincare products. Read your labels, ask questions, and don’t automatically trust a product when the label says it’s natural or organic. If at all possible, try to buy local. If you can’t find locally produced products, buy products from smaller companies with a natural and organic heritage.

id you know that 90 percent of our nutritional energy comes from oxygen and only 10 percent is derived from food? Oxygen is fundamental. Colourless, tasteless and odourless, oxygen is the supreme element — a primary nutrient without which life couldn’t exist. We can live without food for weeks and without water for between three and seven days. But how long can we live without oxygen? Five minutes. That’s how important it is. Our bodies literally starve without oxygen. Each of the body’s estimated 100 trillion cells requires oxygen for each and every one of its metabolic processes. We need oxygen in order to combust foods to provide energy for the heart, brain and cells. All functions of the body are regulated by oxygen. The abilities to think, feel, move, eat, sleep and even talk all depend on energy generated from oxygen. Our brain needs oxygen to process information. Our body uses oxygen to metabolize food and to eliminate toxins and waste through oxidation. Oxygen energizes cells so they can regenerate, and provides vital cellular flexibility. In fact, all of our organs need a great deal of oxygen to function efficiently. That’s why it must be replaced on a moment-to-moment basis. Oxygen is one of the most significant anti-aging components. The more we saturate our cells with stabilized oxygen, the lower the rate of wear and tear on our bodies. Oxygen’s natural ability to catabolize or oxidize bacteria, fungi and viruses plays a significant role in preventing degenerative diseases and sustaining the natural immortality factor of the cell. In fact, were we to take any fungus, virus or pathogenic bacteria and put them in a petri culture dish, then drop stabilized oxygen on them, they would all die on contact. So, it’s clear that oxygen plays one of the most critical roles in our overall health. If we want to enjoy the benefits of more energy, better metabolism, resistance to pathogens, plus anti-aging benefits, getting more oxygen into our cells is the key.

The Enduring Appeal of
Marilyn Denis By Liberty Craig

www.vistamagonline.com
TV and radio personality Marilyn Denis is back for Season 2 of her new daytime show.
W
e know her by name, by face and by voice. In all regards, Marilyn Denis is synonymous with daytime entertainment across Canada. Denis is about to launch the second season of her new entertainment and lifestyle talk show on CTV, aptly named The Marilyn Denis Show. All the while, she has continued her gig as radio morning show co-host with CHUM-FM, where she is currently celebrating her 25th year. It is no exaggeration to call Marilyn Denis the queen of the Canadian daily entertainment and lifestyle scene. As Season 2 of her new show readies for airing, Marilyn shares with us what it takes to keep live daily television and radio upbeat and entertaining, how she keeps the viewers viewing and the listeners listening, and how she maintains the energy, humour and honesty she is so well known for.
Vista: After hosting the popular daytime talk show CityLine for 19 years, how did it feel to leave?
Marilyn: After 19 years, it was something I was used to, but I was ready to go. It was a lovely send-off. If anything, I had to say goodbye to a lot of terrific people.
Vista: You are well known as an award-winning radio personality,
especially with CHUM-FM, where you’ve been since 1986. What do you think gives you such incredible staying power? Marilyn: I think it’s the chemistry that Roger [Ashby], Darren [B. Lamb] and I have. We work as a team. Same with The Marilyn Denis Show. They’re both truly positive environments. We have our up and down days, but everybody has a great passion for what they do. Lifestyle programming is a tough thing to keep producing every day. You have to love what you do, and that’s what keeps me going.
Vista: It took more than two years before The Marilyn Denis Show finally kicked off. What happened during this time?
Marilyn: The first delay was a little thing called the economy. The second was the Olympics. In those years, I finished building my house in downtown Toronto – well, I had other people build it for me, of course. I also had to fly to Calgary quite often as my mother got very ill and eventually passed away. It’s interesting how things play out. CTV never waivered – they just weren’t ready, and I wasn’t ready. And when we were ready, my dad was in a good space, my son was in a good space, I was in a good space. I think it happened for a reason.
Vista: You launched The Marilyn Denis Show to nearly 400,000 viewers! Tell us about Season 1 of the show.
Marilyn: It was great. It was like the first semester of university. You know what you want to do, you have to take a whole bunch of different courses, introduce a whole bunch of different ideas. You have to see what sits with the viewers. Let’s try doing a story this way, rather than the way everybody else does it. Does it speak to our viewers? It’s been interesting.
Vista: You interview people every day of the week, including stars from Elton John to Bradley Cooper. What makes a great interview?
Marilyn: I think what makes a great interview is people who want to be there. People who have a great story. I think when someone has reached fame in some way, how they got there is really interesting. Finding out how they had to go through the process – which is never easy. You learn something from them.
Vista: Favourite moments from Season 1? Marilyn: I really had a great time with Elton John. He’s so gracious. Bradley Cooper was delicious. Donny Osmond came on. I was told we were having a surprise guest and they were going to blindfold me, and I said okay! It turned out after many guesses to be Donny Osmond. That was great. Harry Connick Jr. – I love him so much I had him walk on with me.
Vista: You are known as a candid person who speaks openly on
topics like your own plastic surgery. How does your famously honest approach translate on The Marilyn Denis Show? Marilyn: My whole thing is honesty. I’m not an actress, so I don’t know how to be a “talk show host.” I have to be myself. Not everybody likes you; you don’t like everybody, but when you come on this show, you know it’s safe. If you don’t want to talk about something, you don’t need to talk about it. I won’t be offended if someone doesn’t want to answer my questions, but nine times out of ten, they will. They know it’s just a really comfortable, safe place to be. Now let’s go back to Bradley Cooper...

Interview with Marilyn Denis Cont’d Vista: How do you handle the stress of two busy jobs – not to mention live television? Marilyn: I try to work out three to four times a week with weight training and really eat properly, five times a day. I should maybe eat less because the weight’s not coming off – but I’m doing my best! I try to get a good night’s sleep. I’m the worst when it comes to overbooking myself. I get too busy and get overwhelmed, and that’s something that I’ve got to stop doing. I’m learning to say no.
Vista: What do your workouts look like? Marilyn: I go for power walks, but mostly I do weights with my personal trainers at Totum Life Science. If I don’t work out, I get really sore and stiff, and I feel so much better after a workout. Sometimes we don’t want to go, but after, we’re glad that we’ve done it – mentally, and we know that we’ve done something to give back to our bodies.
Vista: Are you on any special diet for TV? Marilyn: I wake up at 3:30 a.m. every day, and in the first half hour after I get up, I have egg whites and a cup of coffee. Then, probably around 7 or 7:30, I have Greek yogurt with blueberries. Then I have lunch, a salad; I’m eating quinoa and chicken right now. Then a little snack in the afternoon, maybe more yogurt but no fruit, sometimes a power shake although I prefer to do more natural things. And then dinner; I try to eat, no word of a lie, at 5:00 because I go to bed at 8 p.m.! I have protein and vegetables. There’s no alcohol, and if there is, it’s a white wine spritzer on the weekends. As you get older, it is very hard to lose weight. My thing is to be as healthy as I can be, trying to maintain the energy that I need for these shows, and trying to feel good. Of course, I always think if I could just lose 10 pounds I’d be happier! All women feel that way. Ten pounds, come on!
Vista: Is there additional pressure for women in television? Marilyn: I’m 53 and this is the way I look. I was talking to Debra Messing (who appeared on the show last season) about looking at old footage from Will and Grace. We’re all older now – of course she’s still very pretty and vivacious – and we look at our old footage and go “Oh my gosh!” When you’re on TV for a long period of time... well, we all age! There are days when I don’t feel good, but this is the way I am.

Your Body’s Best Fight Against
C a nce r By Rose Macmillan

n 2007, approximately 7.9 million people worldwide died of cancer, accounting for 13 percent of all deaths that year. Cancer is the leading cause of death in the developed world. This staggering number continues to rise as the population ages and as greater life expectancy means that we continue to live longer into our senior years. Lifestyle changes, including diet and environment, may also have a significant impact on worldwide cancer rates. In the USA, the most common forms of cancer are prostate, lung and colorectal, with the most deaths resulting from lung cancer. Lung cancer is often caused by smoking or other environmental factors, just as skin cancer is typically caused by sun exposure, while other common cancers (stomach, breast, liver) have less clearly defined causes. Physiologically, cancer is caused when abnormal cells in the body begin to grow and multiply without the usual controls put in place by the immune system. The cells continue to invade and destroy adjacent tissues and also spread (or metastasize) through the blood stream and lymphatic system. While the body’s immune system is designed to kill invading cancer cells, established cancers develop mechanisms to make them resistant to immune attack. A weak or compromised immune system is often recognized as a contributor to most chronic disease, including cancer. Responsible for the health and function of the entire body, the importance of the immune system in cancer treatment and prevention cannot be overlooked. Typical treatments for invasive cancers include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. These treatments target and destroy cancer cells and are highly effective in so doing; however, each of these treatments also affects the health of surrounding tissues and cells, and each treatment compromises the strength and resilience of the immune system. Rather than helping the body to fight the spread of abnormal cancer cells, the standard cancer treatments actually hinder the body’s ability to do so. Moreover, while these widely accepted treatment methods are effective in killing cancer cells, they are unable to destroy 100 percent of cells. With a 95 to 98 percent effectiveness, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, alone or in conjunction, inevitably leave behind a few intact cancer cells that may flourish and spread in a damaged immune environment. Immunotherapy is receiving more and more attention from medical communities in recent years. The immune system’s key defense cells are called Natural Killer cells, or NK cells. NK cells recognize and kill abnormal cancer cells by releasing small proteins that cause the targeted cells to die by apoptosis, which is the process of programmed cell death the body uses to rid itself of potentially harmful cells. New research into methods of increasing NK cell activity shows significant promise in the fight against cancer. A substance called MGN-3, an extract of rice bran modified by enzymes from shiitake mushrooms, has been clinically proven highly effective in boosting NK cell activity and helping cancer patients. Used alone or in conjunction with conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, MGN-3 can increase NK cell activity in as little as three weeks, in turn increasing survival rates. A 1996 study involving 27 patients with different forms of cancer (presented at the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research), all taking conventional treatments and 3 grams of MGN-3 per day, showed that patients had significant rises in NK cell activity when taking MGN-3. These ranged from 100 percent to 537 percent increases. In 1998, a study documented in the International Journal of Immunotherapy (XIV-2, pg 89-99) involved 24 patients taking MGN-3 in three different concentrations. NK cell activity was significantly increased after one week and peaked at two months in all individuals. MGN-3 cannot replace conventional therapies in treating advanced malignancies. However, used during or after conventional cancer therapies, MGN-3 can help boost the body’s immune system to fight off remaining cancer cells and prevent the recurrence that is unfortunately so common in cancer patients.

The Healthiest Tea for Your Body, Your Planet and the Global Economy By Christian Sauvé
M
any of us are aware of the significant health benefits of tea. Rich in anti-oxidants, black and green teas are not only soothing, delicious drinks hot or cold; they’re also proving more and more advantageous for our health and well-being. Nowadays, tea makers and tea drinkers alike are more interested than ever before in ensuring that our tea is as healthy for our planet and our global economy as it is for our bodies. That means Fairtrade tea that is organically grown and, preferably, locally made.
Healthy for Your Body
Green and black teas have about ten times the polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables. These polyphenols are antioxidants that scavenge for free radicals that damage our cells, and detoxify our bodies of these harmful invaders. Tea has been clinically proven to block DNA damage resulting from toxic chemicals, damage which is potentially cancer-causing. Other flavenoids found in abundance in tea are antioxidants not found in fruits and vegetables. Even herbal teas contain various types of antioxidants, though their properties are less well researched and understood than the more studied green and black varieties.
Healthy for Your Planet
Organic is best, as they say, and the back-to-nature philosophy of organic farming is nowhere so prevalent as in the tea industry. The term “organic,” when applied to tea, has multiple meanings. For starters, organic tea is sustainably grown, meaning that land is not deforested in order to build tea plantations, robbing the planet of vital ecosystems in the process. Organic tea is also grown without chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, which leach into the earth and our bodies and wreak havoc upon the sensitive equilibrium of each. The reason organic tea is even more important than other organic produce is the way in which tea is consumed. When tea is grown in the conventional manner, it is treated with myriad agricultural chemicals that have become common in all intensively farmed crops. After it is harvested, it is typically dried without being washed. You might wash your apple before you eat it, but you can’t wash your tea before you drink it. When you steep a non-organic tea bag in hot water, those harmful chemicals are released right along with your flavourful tea. As with other non-organic farming, the health of the farmers and other workers coming in contact with agricultural chemicals must also be considered.
22
VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 78
Another consideration when purchasing organic teas is the origin of ingredients other than tea leaves. Many herbal teas and some green and black teas are flavoured with essential oils, spices and herbs. Try to find tea products that include entirely organic and fair trade ingredients.
Healthy for Our Global Economy
Although there are Fairtrade Certified teas available today, mostly of the green and black tea variety, it is less common to find Fairtrade herbal teas made with Fairtrade certified ingredients other than tea. The Fairtrade certification begins with small farming organizations that grow raw ingredients while adhering to specific standards regarding sustainable farming, governance, and labour standards. To purchase fair trade products, a company must likewise follow a set of rules and standards regarding payment and contracts. In Canada, a company must be registered to deal in Fairtrade Certified products and adhere to a set of standards before using the term on their packaging. Growing awareness and acceptance of fair trade products has slowly enacted a change in the way we understand where our grocery store items really come from, and how that brightly coloured box of tea impacts our global economy.
Smaller Is Better
Large tea companies require brokers and “middle men” to get their teas grown, harvested, shipped, packaged and sold. In smaller organizations, as many of us in Canada know, the lines of business and communication are much more direct. Boutique tea sellers often buy their raw ingredients direct from farmers and establish long-term relationships with tea growers and spice suppliers around the world. This direct purchasing power helps to support local economies as there are fewer links in the chain to take a percentage of profit. Tea quality is more easily assessed and monitored and in the end, the grower, the supplier, and the tea drinker all benefit.

Homeopathy: Safe, Natural and Effective Relief from the Common Cold By Stephenie Farrell
C
atching a cold is inevitable, but it’s not the end of the world. Right? Well, the constant sneezing, dripping nose, sore throat, and tickling cough are uncomfortable, but they’re healthy reactions to the invading virus. Does this knowledge make having a cold more pleasant? I didn’t think so. If your cold symptoms have got you down, give homeopathy a try. Homeopathy delivers safe, natural and effective relief for symptoms associated with the common cold. Stock Up for the Season The following remedies are must-haves for this cold season. • If you suffer with violent sneezing fits, a dull headache and a tickling cough made worse from cold air, try Allium Cepa. Nasal discharge irritates your nostrils and your eyes tear profusely. • When you’re highly sensitive to external impressions, such as light and noise, you may need Hepar Sulph. If you need this remedy, you’ll also be extremely sensitive to touch. For instance, if you have a sore throat, it’s so sore that you can’t even touch it.
24
VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 78
Now that’s sensitive! • Use Phosphorus if you experience coughs and colds that always seem to descend into your chest. Phosphorus is also an important remedy to consider when you have a sore throat, particularly when talking causes violent tickling in your throat and results in coughing. • Try using Pulsatilla when your nasal discharge is thick, yellow or greenish and bland. Your nasal congestion is worse at night, after you lie down, and the blockage alternates sides. All your symptoms feel worse in a warm room and better in open air. You have a dry mouth, yet aren’t thirsty, and feel better with gentle, continuous motion. If you need Pulsatilla, you could be emotional, sensitive, and cling to your loved ones looking for attention and sympathy. • Ipecacuanha is a great remedy for you if your cough is dry, spasmodic and ends in choking and gagging. • If you’re suffering with a dry, harsh, barking cough due to cold, Spongia Tosta could be your remedy. The tickling irritation you experience in the chest or throat is relieved by eating and drinking. • Antimonium Tartaricum is useful if you have a loose, rattling, and unproductive cough. This is a good remedy to consider if your cough comes on after exposure to a damp basement or cellar. If you need Antimonium, you’re likely to be irresistibly sleepy and suffer with cold sweats. • Think of Hydrastis Canadensis for increased mucus production. It’s useful when you produce plenty of thick, white or yellow, tenacious nasal discharge. You may need Hydrastis if you’re always sneezing on waking and
if your nose feels sore when breathing. A loose, rattling cough that’s caused by ticking in the larynx is also characteristic of this remedy. Taking Your Remedy Properly For best results, it is important that you follow these guidelines when taking your homeopathic cold remedy: • Dissolve the remedy under your tongue, making sure you wait at least 30 minutes before or after eating or drinking. • Avoid strong flavours such as coffee or mint while taking homeopathic remedies. • The higher the potency, the more specific you have to be about matching your symptoms, so choose a low potency such as 30X or 30C. • Take one dose of the remedy every hour up to three doses. When you feel 50 percent better, stop taking the remedy and let your body do the rest. If you’ve taken three doses and don’t feel any improvement, stop taking the remedy, as it is probably not the correct one for you. • If your symptoms persist or worsen, seek the advice of your primary health care provider. Make sure you get lots of rest, hydrate yourself properly and nourish your body with good whole foods. Slow down and be good to yourself. Often, getting acute illness such as a cold is our body’s way of telling us we need to slow down.

Youthful Skin
From Within By Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe, MS
received GLA oil supplements and within 60 days, their skin was not losing as much moisture. Over a third of those who started the study with skin rashes and irritation had none. Plus GLA oil reduced dry skin and made their skin glow. Just think if we started taking GLA oil as children: we may not wrinkle at all! Make sure your GLA oil supplement delivers a high amount of GLA (500mg per serving). Be aware that many GLA supplements just list the total oil content and you have to read the fine print for the amount of actual GLA. GLA, Menopause and Skin In women who have gone through menopause, the enzyme that converts fatty acids from our food into GLA no longer works. We have learned that GLA is the main component of beautiful skin. GLA makes your skin luminescent, dewy and glowing. The inability to make GLA after menopause is the reason why Jennifer noticed her skin become dull and wrinkled so quickly once her menstrual cycle stopped. Without sufficient GLA, the skin becomes dry, rough and wrinkled. To return your skin to its youthful glow after menopause, we must supplement with GLA. GLA also reduces inflammation in the skin associated with rashes and rosacea, which are also common in menopausal women.
W
hile looking at childhood photos, taking note of her beautiful, glowing skin, Angela realized that at 27, her skin was already showing signs of aging. At 52, Jennifer was shocked at how quickly her skin became dull and wrinkled after menopause. Kendra delivered a beautiful baby boy but within weeks his head was covered in cradle cap and the folds of his arms had developed eczema. What do all these scenarios have in common? Fatty acid deficiency is the cause of all these skin troubles – but not just any fatty acid. Beautiful skin requires a very special essential fatty acid called Gamma Linolenic Acid, also known as GLA. GLA builds healthier, more beautiful skin from the inside out. GLA is called an “essential” fatty acid because we have to get it from the food we eat. Sadly, the North American diet is made up predominantly of bad fats from red meats and processed foods devoid of “good” fats. And even if you eat well, to make matters worse, an enzyme called the delta-6-desaturease enzyme is often impaired, which means you can’t make the good fats like GLA from the foods you eat. The only way to get this important fatty acid is from a bottle. Younger looking skin in a bottle is something your dermatologist most likely won’t tell you about. GLA is found in borage oil (20 to 24 percent) and to a lesser extent in evening primrose oil (8 to 10 percent). Fish and flax oil do not provide GLA. Consuming GLA oil is the fastest road to gorgeous skin. There are many common reasons why the enzyme in the body that makes GLA does not work, including low thyroid, viral infections, diabetes and prediabetes, menopause, aging, sugar consumption (on average we eat 150 lbs of sugar per person per year) and deficiencies in vitamins C, B6, B3, zinc and magnesium. The Secret to Glowing, Youthful Skin Angela will be happy to know that in one study, younger women

GLA, Eczema and Skin Rashes Not only is GLA important to prevent and treat wrinkled, dry skin, but GLA helps to maintain the stability and fluidity of the natural water loss barrier in our skin. Skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis, cradle cap, acne and dry skin occur when we are deficient in GLA. GLA is vital for keeping skin cells moist and strong, improving the protective function of the skin. In one study, 60 patients given 500mg of GLA per day for eczema showed a 90 percent improvement over 12 weeks. Eczema is a common problem in infants and children. GLA is safe for all ages without the side effects seen with steroid creams. During pregnancy, moms need extra GLA to ensure the baby does not become deficient. Kendra’s baby has common signs of infant GLA deficiency. Cradle cap and infant eczema or dry crusts on the skin that occur on the scalp, face, armpits, chest and groin area can be treated with topical GLA oil. One study included 48 infants with dermatitis who were given twice daily topical applications of GLA oil for six weeks, resulting in complete relief. One teaspoon of GLA oil containing 500mg of GLA should be applied twice a day. GLA and Sunburn GLA also reduces the inflammation in the skin caused by the sun’s UV light. A Scandinavian study showed that when people took GLA oil supplements, it significantly reduced the effect of UV light on their skin. It took longer for their skin to turn red and burn. For those of us who do not like the ingredients in sunscreen, enhancing our skin’s ability to ward off the sun’s rays is a plus. We are spending billions of dollars annually on cosmetic treatments, yet the solution for beautiful skin can be found in a bottle of GLA oil. It’s the Most
Miserable Time of the Year By Amanda Bates
W
hile winter conjures up images of snuggly fireside scenes, the scent of pine needles and cinnamon, and a general all around cozy glow, for those of us susceptible to colds or – or even worse, flu! – the chilliest season of all can be a miserable prospect. As soon as we hear the unmistakable snuffles of a child bringing home the first in a long line of seasonal bugs from school (a.k.a. “The Germ Factory”), it’s time to hit the nearest pharmacy to dose up on whatever latest miracle cure is stocking the shelves. But what if you’re not keen on filling yourself – or your little ones – so full of remedies to de-stuff noses that you rattle when you walk down the street? There are still a number of things you can do to ease the suffering of the afflicted, as well as those around you, who must endure the foghorn of a nose-blow on a regular basis.
Eucalyptus and Steam Treatment
Yes, it’s what your mother told you to do, and even though it hurts to admit it… it works! Boil a kettle, plug the sink, pour in the water and add a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Then, lower your face above the water and put the tried-and-tested towel over your head. Breathe in and relax for five to ten minutes. This will clear your nose like a charm, and has the added bonus of a mini-facial!
Neti Pot
It’s a centuries-old device from India. A hundred generations and Oprah can’t be wrong! When the neti pot appeared on her show, customers had cleared the shelves by the next day. The neti pot is a plastic mini teapot-style device. Filled with saline solution and poured into one nostril, the liquid will come out the other side, effectively clearing your nasal passages as it goes. The adult version might take practice; one neti pot company, SinuCleanse, has created “Kids Mist,” which makes it easy for little ones to use, too.
Gargle with Salt Water
The cheapest and probably most effective solution for a sore throat ever discovered. When the initial aversion to putting salt water in your mouth has been replaced by the agony of a
VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 78
throat assaulted by a feeling of razor blades, warm up some water, dissolve a teaspoon of salt in it and open wide! Bear in mind you might not have been gargling correctly your whole life – the water needs to get right to the back of your throat, instead of just being rinsed around your teeth. Making sure not to swallow, take the solution as far back in your mouth as you can manage and make a fake ‘gulping’ action. This will get the water to where it’s needed to do its work.
Ginger and Lemon
While home-made lemonade has been doing the trick for years, slam a bit of fresh ginger in there and you’re doubling up on the medicinal powers of your remedy-in-a-mug. Usually, two slices of lemon and about an inch of fresh sliced ginger root is the right ratio for some great zing and some serious cold-fighting action. You may choose to add sugar, but there’s really no need – the flavours complement each other while offering plenty of bug-busting properties.
Vitamin D
As the saying goes, “prevention is better than cure,” and with that in mind, it’s no real hardship to take a vitamin D tablet every day. With our Canadian weather, it’s unlikely you’ll ever have a natural overdose of vitamin D. Taken in moderation, the supplement can boost your immune system by increasing the effectiveness of your bug-fighting cells, making it a lot less likely you’ll be knocked sideways by a bout of anything nasty in the winter season!

Knowledge and Your
Ignorance is NOT
By Dr. Cory Holly
K
nowing is doing: that’s the philosophy behind the Cory Holly Institute. If you don’t “do, you don’t know. We are what we do, not what we say. Talk is cheap; actions speak louder than words. If you don’t back up your intention with action, then your intention isn’t real. Words without physical demonstration are smoke. Yet a man cannot do what he does not know. Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to personal health management. We are volitional creatures with the capacity to learn, but we are not born with the knowledge that leads to action guided by reason and science. The knowledge of health is not embedded in our DNA. We are born with the tools to acquire, process and apply true health knowledge, but the knowledge itself must be acquired over time by a deliberate process motivated by desire and necessity. Humans can grow and master themselves only by their own effort. No one becomes a master by default, but the good news is that every master was once a disaster. We all have to start from scratch and climb the ladder of life one rung at a time. No one can do the work for us. A strong man cannot make a weak man strong. He can try but he will fail. A man who needs strength must “lift himself against the resistance of his own fears and negative emotions. We must all face the same truth together. It’s called reality.
Functional Health and Sweat Equity
Health is the presence of function, and functional health is best achieved through controlled exercise and optimal nutrition: sweat equity deposited in the bank of life. Exercise performed consistently with intensity and true grit. Exercise that is calculated in advance, structured and routinely measured. In fact, that’s what exercise is; all other forms of movement are physical activity. Exercise form and sequence must correlate with mathematical principles and natural laws that govern human performance, recovery and growth. But we must also eat as hard we train. Training without proper nutrition is futile. It’s like swimming against the current of a great ocean or a mighty river. Exercise alone without optimal nutrition is an unreliable strategy for reducing body fat. Yet how many of us expect exercise alone to strip off body fat caused by eating the wrong way? Consistency from the inside out means just that. It begins with an agreement with Me-Myself-and-I: the “I am what I am factor. If we’re onside with ourselves, we never get in our own way. That would be foolish. We understand what needs to be done, so we do

it. Sounds simple, but it’s extremely uncommon. Most of us trip over our own feet, and do you know why? We do it on purpose.
Know Thyself, Heal Thy Body
So who and what are you? Let’s start with your blood type. Do you know what it is? From there you can move on to ethnic origin (genetic type), metabolic type, somatotype, gland type, functional type, sport type, Ayurvedic type, Chronotype and autonomic type for a total of ten typing models. This life is a journey of self-discovery. Did you know with just a little spit you can get your DNA genotyped? Check out www.23andme.com. I learned of this site by downloading and listening to the audio book The Language of Life by Francis S. Collins. He directed the Human Genome Project. Genotyping your DNA is a great way to explore your early ancestors, map the heritage in your genes and learn how your genes can impact your future health. Wouldn’t it be incredible to stay well and lean lifelong? Think of it. No chronic disease or disability. No excess fat to store the toxins of the world. No cancer, no heart disease and no diabetes. Is that possible? You tell me. Whatever you think, you’re right. Is there anything more important than your own personal state of health and well-being? There’s nothing more important than mine. Nothing. We can’t stay well in this world of chaos unless we take care of ourselves, and we can’t take care of ourselves unless we know how. We have to have the right knowledge before we can do the work that needs to be done. Education is essential, but we must have the desire to be educated. We have to know where to look. We have to want to be well and that’s where the fire comes from: inside. Here’s my proposal: Let’s do it together. Let’s push constantly towards a life free of infection, disease and degeneration. Let’s abstain from doing anything harmful to ourselves and others. Let’s learn about the natural laws that govern health, preserve life and prevent disease. Let’s do the work together! Let’s hit the weights and run like the wind. Let’s eat like there IS a tomorrow. Let’s live an independent life guided and sustained by reason. And above all, let’s be responsible for our thoughts, words, actions and deeds. True health is a state of mind driven from the inside out.

“All art is but imitation of nature,” said Seneca. And as art imitates life, so does it influence life. The movement of Canadian artists toward an environmental perspective reflects our society’s growing concern about our planet, and our need to create greater awareness and appreciation of our relationship with nature. Through photography, music, art installations, conceptual art and art education, Canadian artists inform us and our children about our changing coexistence with our natural world, exploring the beauty of nature, the impact of technology on nature, the loss of nature, and more. The artists named below are examples of people from all walks of life who impact our lives as Canadians and our understanding of our environment – each in his or her own way. Robert Bateman Renowned Canadian artist, environmentalist and naturalist Robert Bateman is an iconic wildlife artist with a truly global reach. A 20year high school art and geography teacher, Bateman has been awarded 12 honorary doctorates and countless other awards and honours, including the Order of Canada. Widely exhibited, Bateman has dedicated his life to conservation and celebration of the natural world. Says Bateman, “I can’t conceive of anything more varied and rich and handsome than the planet Earth. And its crowning beauty is the natural world. I want to soak it up, to understand it as well as I can, and to absorb it... and then I’d like to put it together and express it in my painting. That is the way I want to dedicate my life.” www. robertbateman.ca Edward Burtynsky Edward Burtynsky’s striking, haunting, shocking yet somehow painfully beautiful photography documents humanity’s scarring of our planet. His large-format colour photographs depict landscapes overrun by technology and waste; nature transformed through industry. Exhibited in major museums throughout the world, including Bibliotèque Nationale in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Burtynsky was
also the subject of a 2003 large-format book and an award-winning 2007 documentary that shared the title Manufactured Landscapes. Burtynsky supports organizations such as WorldChanging, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to solutions-based journalism about the future of the planet, and Basel Action Network (BAN), which works to prevent the export of toxic wastes, toxic products and toxic technologies from rich to poorer countries. Upon receiving a TED prize in 2007, Burtynsky stated his intention to encourage “a massive and productive worldwide conversation about sustainable living.” www.edwardburtynsky.com Jason Leo Bantle Jason Bantle is a wildlife and nature photographer whose work focuses entirely on Canada and Alaska, with particular attention to northern Saskatchewan and the mountains of Alberta. His photos are taken using 35mm film, with no filters or digital alterations involved. Bantle’s goal is to “stir in others an appreciation of Canada’s nature, thereby aiding in its preservation.” His message: “We cannot continue to push nature at our current rate. We need nature and nature needs our respect.” www.bantlephoto.com Bobs and Lolo Robyn Hardy (Bobs) and Lorraine Pond (Lolo) grew up together on Canada’s west coast, where their love of nature grew into a lifelong passion. They combined their education and skills to focus on a sing-song approach to teaching kids about the environment through music. The energetic performance duo can be found in and around Vancouver and on Treehouse TV, connecting kids to the natural world and teaching them to care about themselves, their neighbours and the planet. www.bobsandlolo.com Ingrid Koivukangas Ingrid Koivukangas is a first generation Finnish-Canadian environmental artist whose work explores our connection, or loss of connection, to the land. Through installation, sculpture, video, writing, photography, paint-
ing, print making and drawing, Koivukangas questions how we can find a balance between technology and nature. Much of her work is site specific, bringing together local history, natural surroundings, and the larger universe. Koivukangas also teaches environmental workshops. www.ingridkoivukangas.com Iain Baxter& A ground-breaking and award-winning Canadian conceptual artist, Iain Baxter& has in recent years turned his attention toward the environment, the landscape, and our commodification of both. His 2005 legal name change from Baxter to Baxter& (pronounced “Baxterand”) exemplifies his play with concept and the interaction between the viewer and the artist. The 2010 Iain Baxter& Ecoartvan project, curated and commissioned by the arts organization No.9: Contemporary Art & the Environment, sought to bring contemporary art and environmental education to 10,000 inner city elementary school students across Greater Toronto, to stimulate awareness and both social and environmental change. State of the Ocean Report: A Wake-up Call for the World By David Suzuki with contributions from Ian Hanington
O
ceans keep us alive. They provide food, oxygen, water, medicines and recreation. They help protect us from climate change by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide. If we care about ourselves and our children and grandchildren, we must look beyond our immediate surroundings and do all we can to care for the oceans. But instead of respecting oceans as a life-giving miracle, we often use them as vast garbage dumps and as stores with shelves that never go empty. The shelves are going empty, though. Humans are changing the chemistry and ecology of the ocean at a scale and rate not previously believed possible. According to a study from the International Programme on the State of the Ocean, the combined effects of overfishing, fertilizer run-off, pollution and ocean acidification from carbon dioxide emissions

are putting much marine life at immediate risk of extinction. The 27 scientists from 18 organizations in six countries who participated in the review of scientific research from around the world concluded that the looming extinctions are “unprecedented in human history” and have called for “urgent and unequivocal action to halt further declines in ocean health.” The main factors are what they term the “deadly trio”: climate change, ocean acidification and lack of oxygen. Overfishing and pollution add to the problem. The researchers also found that “existing scientific projections of how coral reefs will respond to global warming have been highly conservative and must now be modified.” And they found that chemicals such as “brominated flame retardants, fluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals and synthetic musks used in detergents and personal care products” — which can cause cancer and disrupt human endocrine and immune systems — have been found in aquatic animals everywhere, even in the Canadian Arctic. Marine litter and plastics are also found throughout the oceans, sometimes in massive swirling gyres. Alex Rogers, the scientific director of IPSO, is quoted in the Guardian as saying he was shocked by the findings: “This is a very serious situation demanding unequivocal action at every level. We are looking at consequences for humankind that will impact in our lifetime, and worse, our children’s and generations beyond that.” Action at every level means just that — actions that we can all take as individuals as well as actions that governments and industry must take. Reducing our own wastes, being careful about what we put down the drain, cutting down the amount of animal-based protein we eat and feed to our pets, and joining efforts to protect the oceans are a start, but the most important role we can all play is to tell governments and industry that we will no longer stand for this. We can already anticipate that industryfunded deniers and the dupes who help spread
their misinformation will be out in force, painting this as yet another conspiracy on the part of the world’s scientists, and that some governments will put industrial interests ahead of everything else. We must put a stop to this nonsense. Every year that we stall on the solutions to climate change means we are less likely to be able to resolve the problems. Other scientists and I have been warning about the consequences of climate change for more than 20 years, and yet governments are still dithering while the world’s natural systems continue to erode. What this study also shows is that we cannot look at ecosystems, species and environmental problems in isolation. This research points out that the combined impacts of all the stressors are far more severe than what scientists might conclude by looking at individual problems. The report exemplifies the old adage about death by a thousand cuts. There is no single place to concentrate blame except in the mirror. The study’s authors note that “traditional economic and consumer values that formerly served society well, when coupled with current rates of population increase, are not sustainable.” In other words, we need to account for the impact we have on the planet each time we flush a toilet, drink a pop, hop in a car or eat a radish. There is no shortage of solutions, just a shortage of political will. Further delay in resolving these serious problems will only increase costs and lead to even greater losses of the natural benefits oceans give to us.

Organic Mama: Caring for Baby’s Sensitive Skin By Tami Main
T
here is nothing better than the brandnew, sweet, soft skin of a baby. When my daughter was born over six years ago and the nurse at the hospital handed her to me for her first bath, I was a bit overwhelmed. Was the water temperature too hot? Was she going to slip from my hands? How was I going to wash her delicate little head? Which products should I be using on my precious new baby? A baby’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin, which makes babies more susceptible to dryness and less resistant to infections. Although the skin of a baby is soft and supple, rashes and irritations are quite common. A baby’s skin produces less oil; therefore, it is not necessary to bathe them as often as adults. Babies also produce less melanin than adults, which makes them more prone to sunburn. Adult sunscreen is much too harsh for a baby; it is better to be cautious and keep your baby covered and out of direct sunlight. After six months of age, a baby should be able to tolerate a sunscreen specifically formulated for babies. Always check to make sure the ingredients are safe for your baby. If in doubt, consult
with your family physician. Some skin sensitivities may be due to allergic reactions. It is important to pay close attention to skincare products, foods, medications and any drinks you give to your baby. Other factors such as environment, seasonal changes, air conditioning, central heating, too much bathing and drying baby improperly after bathing may also contribute to skin irritations. At the age of three years, my daughter developed an allergy to dairy that caused her to break out in hives on her arms and legs. Over the past few years, she seems to have outgrown her allergy with limitations put on her intake of dairy products. Diligently checking ingredient lists to ensure your baby’s products do not contain fragrances, dyes and unnecessary chemicals should become second nature to new parents. Many popular brand-name baby products do not necessarily contain ingredients as safe as you would expect. If your baby is prone to skin irritations there are some additional suggestions we can provide to help determine the cause. Laundry detergent is a common culprit of skin sensitivities, as well as cleaning products used in the home. Be aware of what you are using on your laundry and in your
home. Any products that contain fragrances may be a concoction of several chemicals, which can irritate sensitive skin. Synthetic baby clothing fibres can also have this effect. If your baby has conditions such as eczema or dermatitis, a filtered shower head can be helpful as it filters the chlorine and dirt from baby’s bath water, helping ease the dry, sensitive skin patches. Bath water should always be warm and not hot. Cute temperature gauges to assess the temperature of the water before slipping baby into the bath are now available at many baby stores. As tempting as it may be to lather and slather your little one with products, less is always more when using skincare items on your baby. Recipe for Health:
Colourful Quinoa Salad
By Tracy Kaye Holly, CSNA Master
Q
uinoa was once considered “the gold of the Incas.” The Inca civilization referred to it as chisaya mama, or mother of all grains. A highly nutritious food native to South America, quinoa was considered sacred and used in many religious rituals. Quinoa has a delightful characteristic all its own. As it cooks, the outer germ around each grain twists outward, forming a small white, spiralled tail, which is attached to the kernel. The grain itself is soft and delicate and the tail is crunchy, which creates an interesting texture combination and pleasant “crunch” when consumed. Quinoa has a fluffy consistency and a mild, delicate, slightly nutty flavour that borders on bland. Quinoa is gluten-free and higher in amino acids than most conventional modern grains. It’s a complete protein that contains all the essential amino acids, especially lysine, which is required for tissue growth and cellular repair. Quinoa has a high content of manganese and is a good source of magnesium. These minerals act together as antioxidants, helping the body rid itself of dangerous cancer cells and other diseases. High copper levels in quinoa aid in the formation of skin melanin and hemoglobin. Quinoa is also low in saturated fat and, like all plants, has no cholesterol. It is a good source of calcium, which is extremely important for the growth of healthy teeth, bones and skin. Quinoa is a wonderful source of insoluble fibre and clean burning, easyto-digest carbohydrates that serve as an efficient form of biological gasoline for children and athletes. Before cooking, the seeds should be rinsed to remove their external, bitter and resin-like saponins. Quinoa is rinsed before it is packaged and sold, but it is best to rinse again at home before cooking to remove any of the powdery residue that may still be present. The presence of saponin is obvious by the production of a soapy looking “suds” when the seeds are swished in water. Placing quinoa in a strainer and rinsing thoroughly with water easily washes the unwanted saponins away. Instead of reaching for rice, breads, pasta or wheat products, incorporate quinoa into your diet. You’ll love the way it tastes and feels in your body. This recipe is only the beginning of the many different combinations that can be used with quinoa. Winter, spring, summer or autumn, any time of year is a good time for quinoa!

1. Optional: Soak the quinoa in fresh water for a few hours in the cooking pot. Soaking helps quinoa to cook evenly, and loosens up any residue of saponin (usually removed in processing), which can give a bitter taste. 2. If you don’t have time for a longer soaking, use hot water and soak for five minutes. 3. To rinse: stir the quinoa with your hand, and carefully pour off the rinsing water, using a fine mesh strainer at the last rinse. Drain well. 4. Transfer to the cooking pot, add 1 ½ cups water and ½ tsp salt if desired.

5. Bring to a boil, cover with a tight fitting lid, and turn the heat down to simmer. 6. Cook for 15 minutes. 7. Remove quinoa from heat and allow to sit five minutes with the lid on. 8. Fluff quinoa gently with a fork and serve.

Grow Young with HGH From the landmark book Grow Young with HGH comes the most powerful, over-thecounter health supplement in the history of man. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thought by the medical community to be necessary only to stimulate the body to full adult size and therefore unnecessary past the age of 20. Recent studies, however, have overturned this notion completely, discovering instead that the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age at which there is only a trace left in the body) and is the reason why the body ages and fails to regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.
in the blood at the same levels HGH existed in the blood when we were 25 years old.
There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are very comprehensive. Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985 under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treat dwarfism, was quickly recognized to stop aging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.
The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product which would cause your own natural HGH to be released again and do all the remarkable things it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the Modern medical science now regards aging as price of a coffee and donut a day. a disease that is treatable and preventable and that “aging”, the disease, is GHR is available now, just actually a compilation of various in time for the aging Baby diseases and pathologies, like a rise Boomers and everyone else in blood glucose and pressure to from age 30 to 90 who diabetes, skin wrinkling and so on. doesn’t want to age but All of these aging symptoms can be would rather stay young, stopped and rolled back by beautiful and healthy all of maintaining Growth Hormone levels the time. The new HGH releasers are winning converts from the synthetic HGH users as well, since GHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is very affordable.
GHR is a natural releaser, has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version and has no known drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is the direction medicine is going, to get the body to heal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift in medicine and, like any modern leapfrog advance, many others will be left in the dust holding their limited, or useless drugs and remedies. It is now thought that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it is today, where the computer industry was twenty years ago, that it will displace so many prescription and non-prescription drugs and health remedies that it is staggering to think of. The president of BIE Health Products, stated in a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting for these products since the 70’s”. We knew they would come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you want to stay on top of your game, physically and mentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionals who have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the state of the health care system in Canada which appears to be going into serious decline, it’s more important than ever to take pro-active steps to safeguard your health. Continued use of GHR will make a radical difference in your health. HGH is particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay independent in their own home, strong, healthy and alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communities. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers. HGH is known to relieve symptoms of Asthma, Angina, Chronic Fatigue, Constipation, Lower back pain and Sciatica, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration, Menopause, Fibromyalgia, Regular and Diabetic Neuropathy, Hepatitis, helps Kidney Dialysis and Heart and Stroke recovery. How to Select the Best
Bone Health
Products By Nena Dockery
P
roducts designed to address skeletal system issues, including bone and joint health, make up one of the largest categories of nutritional supplements. Many of these contain similar ingredients in varying proportions; therefore, it is difficult to select the best, most efficacious product or products. However, there are products that do stand out. These products contain high-quality ingredients that are backed by published research studies. The recommended dosing is not excessive and their benefits can be experienced within a reasonable length of time. Virtually all bone health products contain calcium, but the source of the calcium can vary and so can the efficacy. Products that contain calcium carbonate have the highest content of elemental calcium, but that calcium may not be optimally bioaccessible, as the presence of gastric acid is usually necessary for absorption. Other forms are more bioaccessible and easier on the GI tract, but the content of available calcium may be lower. Calcium citrate or calcium gluconate may
contain less than 20 percent calcium and, therefore, require a higher dose to get the desired amount of calcium. Natural eggshell calcium provides advantages in both areas as it contains up to 40 percent calcium, does not require the presence of gastric acid and is highly bioaccessible, even more so than calcium citrate. Eggshell calcium is also easier on the gastrointestinal tract than most other calcium forms, and contains significantly less naturally occurring lead than other calcium sources. Eggshell calcium is backed by an impressive number of clinical studies demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting bone health and preventing osteoporotic-related fractures. The best bone health products also contain additional support ingredients. Magnesium in a 2:1 ratio with calcium to maximize calcium absorption is necessary, as is vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the most efficacious form of vitamin D. Products sold as hard capsules may not dissolve adequately, which could compromise the product’s effectiveness. Capsules or chewable tablets provide much better release of the ingredient contents. Egg-derived ingredients supply noteworthy advantages for joint health as well. By far the vast majority of joint health products contain glucosamine, chondroiwww.membrell.ca tin and MSM. Though these ingredients can be quite effective, the research has been inconsistent in demonstrating a therapeutic value. This may be partially due to variations in the quality of the ingredients. This inconsistency can be especially difficult for the end-consumer who simply wants an efficacious product. is much more convenient to take and is much easier to dispense in a readily dissolvable capsule than the 1500 mg recommended dose for glucosamine or 1200 mg for chondroitin. Though the pathology and symptomatology of bone and joint disorders are different, the use of both bone health and joint health products enables synergistic all-over support for the skeletal system. The aging process alone or in combination with lifestyle choices, dietary habits, or medical conditions and the medications that treat them can have deleterious effects on bones, joints and surrounding tissue. Supplementing with products that benefit both parts of the skeletal system can help ensure that the body’s framework remains strong.
Natural Health Products are just that – natural. Over 70% of Canadians use Natural Health Products (NHPs) as part of their healthy lifestyle. Electrolytes
for a Better, Longer Workout By Matthew Tim Anderson
T
ypically we exercise to the point of fatigue, and then consider ourselves done for the day. But what if we could extend our energy levels to postpone that point of fatigue until we’d gotten an even better, more complete workout? A key factor in fatigue levels has to do with electrolytes. When we exercise, our bodies’ electrolyte levels decrease and we get tired. If we exercise for an extended length of time, we also get low in vitamins and carbohydrates, but our bodies require electrolytes to absorb these nutrients at the cellular level. In fact, electrolytes are necessary for all brain functions, acting as electric transmitters that control endless body functions. One hundred million messages per second are relayed within the nervous system via electrolytes. These transmitters are also responsible for maintaining proper fluid balance within cells. Every single muscle contraction requires electrolytes, just as every one of our trillions of cells relies on electrolytes to transport nutrients and waste, and for basic cell metabolism. Electrolytes are minerals – including calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride – capable of transmitting electrical charges within fluids. This function, in addition to the reciprocal relationship between water and electrolytes, is extremely important since 60 to 70 percent of the human body is made up of water. It makes sense, then, that you can optimize health and vitality by maintaining proper levels of fluids and electrolytes in your diet.
Monitor Your Levels
Electrolytes are constantly lost through perspiration, exercise, and normal bodily functions. Whenever these factors are at play, you should be supplementing with electrolytes – and increasingly so in warmer weather. Other factors that increase your need for electrolytes include the following: • Pregnancy • Poor diet • Dehydration • Diuretics (including caffeinated drinks) • Disease • Exertion • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Trauma • Excessive perspiration
Detect and Correct Electrolyte Imbalance
Whenever you feel thirsty, your body is most likely also thirsting for electrolytes. It is essential that you familiarize yourself with the common signs of electrolyte imbalance so you can recognize symptoms immediately and correct the imbalance through supplementation. Common signs of electrolyte imbalance or deficiency include the following: • Muscle weakness • Cramps • Dizziness • Mental confusion • Swelling • Weakness and apathy To correct an electrolyte imbalance, supplementation is key. Be aware, however, that not all off-the-shelf sports drinks and the like have the type of electrolytes your body requires for recovery. While all minerals or trace elements in “ionic” form are capable of functioning as an electrolyte, not all the various forms of minerals or trace minerals available as supplements are capable of becoming electrolytes within the body. Minerals become electrolytes or ionic when they are truly dissolved, not just suspended, in liquid. Only minerals that are already ionic, or those capable of becoming ionic through digestion, can perform the vital roles of electrolytes. For better performance, duration and recovery, supplement with electrolytes before, during and after exercise. Athletes, the elderly, pregnant women, those who perspire heavily, and people working out in warm climates require additional support. Even on a day-to-day basis, electrolyte supplementation improves bodily function and helps you perform at your best – and feel great.
Matthew Tim Anderson, BIS (bachelor of integrated studies) has been involved in harvesting minerals for human nutritional use since 1969.
