From the Editor

Although summer seems to have arrived later for us this year, I do hope you’ve been able to make the most of warmer weather, longer days and brighter skies with some time for yourself during this very busy summer season in the salon.

It’s easy to put taking care of yourself to the bottom of the list when you’re juggling all that a busy career in beauty or hair brings. However to be able to offer your clients your very best, you need to be operating at the top of your game. And that not only applies to physical and mental health, but also when it comes to your knowledge and skills.

In the fast paced world of beauty and hairdressing, new treatments, techniques, products and brands emerge throughout the year. What you were offering your clients at the start of this year may not be what they’re looking for in 2025.

The approach to a new academic year is the perfect time to turn your thoughts towards education and upskilling before the busy Christmas period. There are now thousands of beauty and hair courses that are ABT Accredited, a number that is rising by the week covering everything from essential treatments through to more advanced procedures.

ABT Accredited Training Providers are located as far north as Oban in the Scottish Highlands to Plymouth in the South West of England, and in the West from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland to Norwich in the East. Plus, many of these courses are also available to be delivered in your salon as well as digitally, so you can learn at home at your own pace.

By choosing ABT Accredited training you can be confident that the course content has been assessed and approved as meeting strict criteria required for you to be covered by ABT insurance. Plus, every accredited training provider will offer you an exclusive discount code inviting you to make savings when renewing your cover or join ABT for the first time.

The full list of training providers that offer ABT Accredited courses is available on the ABT website (abtinsurance.co.uk), which you can search by course, location or training provider to find one that’s just right for you.

Best wishes,

ABT Accreditation

ABT Accreditation is a simple, low cost and extremely efficient way to step out of the crowd and show your potential students that you are approved, endorsed and eligible to offer, on completion of your courses, ABT membership and insurance packages to them.

ABT Accreditation isn’t just a logo, or a membership, it allows you to instil confidence and provide guidance to your potential students that they can get insurance with ABT. Once insured your students can continue practicing on the public with the new skills they have learnt.

A successful application would allow you access to the use of our accreditation logo, insurance for your students, as well as loads of membership benefits to becoming an ABT Accredited member.

Pilot scheme launches to support veterans

Chris Duquemin CST, founder of New Vision Therapy, is collaborating with the University of Central Lancashire for a pilot study for veterans experiencing chronic posttraumatic stress.

A number of workshops run by the New Vision Therapy Centre are ABT Accredited.

The "The Resilient Mind And Body" programme aims to give veterans new career opportunities by training in NVT and therefore be able to offer therapeutic treatments to fellow veterans. Students undertake an intensive Anatomy & Physiology education followed by training in NVT.

Chris Duquemin CST (pictured) outlines what New Vision Therapy is, saying:

“We have found a series of simple, safe, hands-on protocols to deactivate the chronic "fight or flight" state that many people sadly find themselves stuck in these days. Not just for veterans but for many of us! Anyone with long term stress, anxiety, ADHD, depression, and many medically undiagnosable conditions like physical pain and headaches or migraines. Usually the root cause is an underlying imbalance with the central nervous system. The brain and spinal cord! That is where we come in.”

He adds:

“Once deactivated, the body is then in a position to heal and fix itself. With NVT we just clear the roadblocks that were preventing that self-healing from taking place… Our goal through the NVT Institute is to teach as many therapists and non-therapists as we can these techniques so we can help as many people as possible.”

In addition, the effect enables serum to be better absorbed by the skin.

Plus cool temperature can be an effective treatment for removal of dermatological lesions such as viral warts, seborrheic keratosis, pre-malignant lesions including actinic keratosis and small benign growths and skin cancers. AAs summer draws to an end, it’s possible you’ll see an increase in clients experiencing hyperpigmentation to their skin. No matter how much you’ve emphasised the importance of broadspectrum protection against the sun’s harmful rays, inevitably there will always be those clients for whom troublesome dark patches and age spots appear or become more prevalent.

You’ll know that melanin is stimulated by exposure to ultraviolet light (from the sun and sunbeds) as a natural skin protector. The more exposure, the more melanin is produced. Whilst this may result in a much-desired tan, when skin is overexposed to UV, areas can remain permanently pigmented, with an uneven skin tone that can be difficult to treat.

Some clients may be genetically predisposed to melasma such as those with freckles but what clients may not realise is that they can also be causing damage to skin whilst using their tablets and smartphones. Highenergy visible (HEV) light emitted from screens, also known as blue light, stimulates melanin production which may lead to increased pigmentation.

Ingredients that treat hyperpigmentation…

Facialist Eavanna Breen highlights what to look for in topical formulations:

Kojic Acid inhibits the production of melanin, making it a powerful ingredient for fading dark spots and improving skin clarity. Products containing Kojic Acid can be used daily to lighten hyperpigmented areas over time.

As an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), Glycolic Acid exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells and promoting cell renewal. This helps to reduce the appearance of dark spots and improve overall skin texture.

Arbutin is a natural skin brightener that inhibits melanin production. It is gentle on the skin and can be used to treat various forms of hyperpigmentation, including sun spots and melasma.

Vitamin C is known for its brightening and antioxidant properties. It helps to fade dark spots and prevent further pigmentation by protecting the skin from free radical damage

...Marks the

Salon treatments and homecare to address hyperpigmentation.

In addition, skin is also vulnerable to melasma due to hormonal changes (oral contraceptives, pregnancy and menopause), prescribed medications such as antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs or through skin trauma from cuts or burns or inflamed by acne. Skin therapist and ABT-Accredited Educator Marie-Louise Coster of All About Mi Training Academy (allaboutmi.net) explains:

“Many who suffer with acne find that once the acne has gone they are left with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which has occurred due to the trauma and inflammation the skin has experienced during the period of acne. Again, just like with UV, excessive melanin is produced by the body in response to protecting it from the irritation, or injury, that the acne has caused.

“Whilst it won’t cause the client any harm, it can be quite distressing and cause anxiety because the client isn’t happy with their appearance.”

Luckily treating pigmentation, whilst challenging, is possible. “It is really important to manage the client’s expectations and make them fully aware that the appearance of pigmentation will get worse before it gets better,” adds Marie-Louise. “This is because we can’t see how deep the pigmentation is from the surface, and once we start treating it and bringing it to the surface it will get darker and worse before it gets better, and the client needs to be prepared for that.”

Prevention is better than cure

She continues:

“Hyperpigmentation is most successfully prevented by the use of SPF every day, irrelevant of weather. Ideally an SPF that is both chemical and mineral to provide a broad spectrum of protection, but also something that has blue light protection in it.

Spot

“When it comes to post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation, in addition to the use of a daily SPF, it is really important not to exacerbate the trauma to the skin so not picking, using dermaceutical grade products that will hydrate and heal the skin whilst treating the acne, and having regular treatments to treat the skin.”

Time for treatment

“In the event that the client already has visible signs of hyperpigmentation there are many treatments available that will help to reduce its appearance,” says MarieLouise. “Treatments such as laser (which break down melanin deposits), facial peels, micro needling and microdermabrasion can all help the appearance.”

Chemical peels that exfoliate the outer layers of the skin can be a useful tool in your arsenal. “Certain peeling agents, like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), can penetrate the skin and inhibit melanin production, reducing the appearance of dark spots and pigmentation over time,” explains Facialist Eavanna Breen (eavannabreen.ie).

“To achieve the best results, I recommend a combination of in-salon treatments and at-home skincare products tailored to your specific needs,” Eavanna adds.

Marie-Louise agrees, saying: “The use of home care is really key in this situation as there are lots of products with various ingredients such as Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Niacinamide etc. that can have great effects in reducing pigmentation.

“Whilst there are many treatments available, with varying levels of success, the best thing any of us can do is educate our clients and teach them to treat their skin to prevent the hyperpigmentation ever occurring. In this situation prevention really is better than cure.”

It should also be noted that the use of a broad spectrum sunscreen should be advised throughout treatment for hyperpigmentation

Part of Repêchage’s Biolight® line, Brightening Serum controls the appearance of uneven skin tone, dark spots and hyperpigmentation thanks to the brand’s marine bio-technology. It features Repêchage’s exclusive Laminaria Complex of seaweeds combined with Willow Bark, Gotu Kola and Liquorice extracts. In addition, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid has skin brightening and anti-inflammatory properties.

The Repêchage Biolight® Brightening collection also comprises Cleanser, Toner, Day Cream, Overnight Cream and a Sheet Mask. With regular use, skin appears more radiant and refined with a more even tone.

SkinBase™ Microdermabrasion gently improves the appearance of uneven skin tone and pigmentation using a fine jet of abrasive crystals to gently remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells. This not only minimises the appearance of pigmentation but also stimulates cell renewal so that skin has a more even appearance. Treatments take as little as 30 minutes, with a single SkinBase™ treatment removing up to three times the number of dead skin cells in a single session than some other exfoliating treatments. The number of treatments required will depend on the severity of hyperpigmentation being treated.

Alternatively, the company’s new treatment, SkinBase™ Hydro, is a multi-step process that gently cleanses, exfoliates with a peel and infuses skin with a blend of active ingredients including AHAs and BHAs which target a specific concern, in this case hyperpigmentation. The serum is applied using a vacuum action, so ingredients are delivered more effectively into the skin.

The treatment concludes with the application of SkinBase™ professional skincare products.

HHands down the worst thing about owning a business is recruiting a team. It is, without exception, the thing I get most requests for help with.

It is the biggest headache of any business owner, a headache I remember only too well, and one that has got a lot worse in our industry with a large proportion of people opting for self-employment.

You don’t need me to tell you how important the right team is to the success of your business. It is unsettling for both the clients and the team when there is a constant turnover of staff. It really doesn’t look good to clients, and potential clients, if you are always recruiting. Clients will start asking why staff don’t stay with you for long, and the problem will be assumed to be you, not the employee.

Recruiting team members can be time consuming and time is money. You could opt to use a recruitment agency and, although this will no doubt save you time in finding and filtering through the applicants, it can be a costly approach.

With the world being as technology focused as it is, I am not convinced newspaper or magazine adverts work the same as they used to. However what we do have is Social Media and the internet, making your message instant when it comes to advertising a vacancy.

Marie-Louise Coster on the importance of following a recruitment procedure.

Find & keep your best salon staff

Marie-Louise Coster

SSo, where should you start and how can you ensure that you get the right applicants? Like anything, follow a procedure to ensure the process works to your best advantage.

Job and applicant profile: Before you advertise take some time to put together a profile of the role itself (part time or full time, permanent or temporary, salary, commission/bonus structure, qualifications and level of experience required and career progression opportunities etc.). Be specific, don’t be woolly. If you need someone to work full time including evenings and weekends, state that this is the case. It saves wasting your time and that of the applicant.

At the same time write a profile of the ideal applicant; what skills does the business need, what experience will they have and what type of person is needed to fit in with your existing team? The needs and happiness of your current working team have to be a factor in your overall decision.

Create your advertisement:

You have one chance to make a good first impression and somewhere that potential applicants are going to want to work. With this in mind, in your job advert explain a little about the salon and the benefits of being one of its employees. Highlight the support, training, career progression, team, hours, working environment, product and treatment benefits, pension, life insurance etc. Make sure you have a closing date for applications and specify that all applicants send a CV and covering letter.

Advertise your vacancy: The first place to do this is your own website and then free job sites, such as Indeed, followed by your social media pages. With sites

like Instagram and TikTok you could do something fun and eye catching to stop people scrolling. There are often Facebook pages that are local jobsites or specific salon industry advertising boards so post on these too and spread the word; it may either be seen by a potential applicant or by someone who knows a job hunter. If you are on a high street, you could put up a notice in the salon or in the window.

All of these approaches are free and will reach a really wide audience almost instantly. If you are happy to take on a newly or part qualified therapist, you could also contact the local colleges and see if they have any suitable students. Perhaps you would even consider taking on an apprentice so you can train them your way?

Review applications: Once you have reached the closing date, read over all the applications and make a short list of who you would like to interview. Take the time to reply to everyone even if you don’t want to take their application any further. The applicant will be grateful to know one way or the other and it’s basic human decency to send a quick email. I would firstly conduct telephone interviews with shortlisted candidates to see how they come across and invite the strongest contenders for an in-person interview.

Always interview in the salon so as the team can meet the potential candidates and applicants can get a feel for the business. Have a list of questions and scenarios, ask them why they want to work for you, what they can bring to the business and where they see themselves further down the line.

As I keep saying, recruitment is a two-way street and as much as you have expectations of them, as an employee they too will have expectations of you as an employer. The pool of potential employees in our industry is relatively small and therefore the really good ones will have lots of options so you have to make them want to work for you. Take the time to explain the benefits of working for your business, the job prospects, training opportunities and progression etc. Remember, if you think they would make a good employee, so will another salon

Carry out a trade test: Invite those who do well to return for a trade test to check they can perform the treatments you need. Always get the applicants to do what I call messier (but precise) treatments, things that could go wrong easily such as

“The pool of potential employees is small and the really good ones will have lots of options.”

waxing, tinting, manicure etc. If they can’t get these basic treatments right, you know they are not going to be able to get a handle on the more advanced aspects

References: When you have chosen your preferred candidate, take up references and client testimonials (if possible) and obtain proof of eligibility to work in the UK.

Make the job offer! Iron out any queries on either side and agree a start date. Perhaps you could arrange lunch or an after work social with your current team and the new applicant to make the start date less daunting for all involved.

Deliver a well-structured Induction Programme: Once you have them, you need to keep hold of them! You want your new recruit to feel happy and confident in the business and to

stay with you for a long time, not lost and unsettled as that will knock their confidence. Spend the first week or so teaching your new starter how you do things, where stock is stored, how you set up your rooms, what treatments are available, how to use your booking system, meeting some of the clients, spending time with the team etc.

Remember…just as job applicants have just one chance to make a good impression, so do you.

“The classic tunic remains a popular choice, with little details bringing the style bang up to date”

Uniforms

Dress to Impress

Grace Crowley, Managing Director at Buttercups Uniforms, discusses what’s new in salon and spa uniforms and the importance of making a daily uniform a practical yet stylish choice.

UUniforms are evolving all the time, both in style and functionality, driven by the very demanding nature of many jobs in the hair and beauty industries. Your uniform should be functional, fashionable and comfortable – remember that you’ll be wearing it for the entire day, and usually in a warm atmosphere.

Most importantly, uniforms must look smart and clean at all times. That means they must wash well and stay crumplefree during a long shift. This is where choosing the right fabric comes in.

Good fabric is absolutely vital in a uniform. These items will be worn all day and must launder quickly and well. They must look smart and professional all day long, with the minimum of effort.

There’s also the question of fashion and style. The hair and beauty industries are exciting and fashion-forward, and modern uniform collections reflect this by incorporating many trend-led features. Our recommendation is to go for classic, elegant lines with a nod to fashion in terms of the neckline or shape.

What colours are we seeing this season?

Black remains popular – no surprise there, as it’s easily the most universally flattering colour for staff members. However, if you are going with classic black, bear in mind that colour fastness is important; no one looks good in a tired-looking, faded black tunic. Make sure you choose your uniform from

an experienced manufacturer such as Buttercups, as they know how important it is for your uniform to stay looking like new, wash after wash.

Navy and grey are brilliant choices if you’d like to stay away from black. These are still very professional, classic colours and simply ooze sophistication.

We’re seeing clients embrace colours a little more. Our ECO Breathable fabric is incredibly good with colour, and we’re delighted to offer tunics in a vibrant Raspberry shade as well as a beautifully warm Olive tone.

And how about styles...

In terms of styles, the classic tunic remains a popular choice, with little details to bring the style bang up to date. Elegant features like a rose gold zip or eye-catching waist dart detailing offer a fashion-forward spin on this classic look.

We are also seeing more and more beauty businesses embrace the comfort and versatility of scrubs – which have evolved way beyond the old baggy styles seen in ER departments. At Buttercups (buttercupsuniforms.com), we are proud to offer a newly expanded range of scrubs that includes everything from traditional loose styles to more fitted pieces that feature stretch fabric and classic cuts. All our scrubs are incredibly durable and can be washed at higher temperatures for perfect hygiene.

Approaching autumn; are you on track?

C• Increase business turnover

• Train in new treatments

• Grow my salon team

• Reach my goals!

Katie Godfrey encourages you to review your business goals for 2024 and make them achievable.

Can you believe we are now more than halfway through the year? Wow, how quick has that gone? I am sure we all remember in January writing down goals of what we wanted to conquer in 2024. I challenge you to look back, be honest with yourself and see if you have hit any yet or whether you still on track to achieve your goals before the end of the year?

Setting goals is so important for any business owner. You need to know what you are working towards in your business otherwise you will just plod along and not achieve anything at all.

This is true whether you are working on your own from home, mobile/freelance or as a salon owner with a team, whether you’re starting a new enterprise or have been in business for years; everyone needs something to work towards.

I invite you to download my Goal Planner for free to help you to plan – just scan the QR code at the end of this article.

Many of us will procrastinate when it comes to writing down our goals. You might have them in your head, but you need to see them and note them down so you feel accountable for achieving them. It is a lot to think about and can be overwhelming, but the key is to break it all down.

Let’s do that together.

If you look back in a year’s time, what would your best year in business look like? One that you’re proud of and where you conquer everything you wanted. Note it down. It is so much easier to work backwards than to forward think.

Once you have written down what that year looks like, you can then break it down into bite sized pieces to make it easier and to calm the overwhelm.

How are you going to achieve these goals within 12 months? What do you need to do each month to make each goal to be achievable?

Let’s look at two different scenarios:

Scenario #1

Goal: To give you more time to run your business, you want to employ your first team member.

To hit this goal within a year, I would break the process down like this:

• Months 1-3: The recruiting stage.

• Months 3-5: Your new team member commences employment with you and starts training.

• Months 5-7: Your new employee is building their client base and getting customers to trust them.

• Months 8-10: You can start handing over some of your clients to your employee.

• Months 11-12: You now have the time to work on your business rather than in it!

Scenario #2

Goal: To generate business turnover of £80,000 a year.

To hit this goal within a year, I would approach this as follows:

• Break down your figures to show how much your treatments and retail items would need to generate per month and per week to hit your £80,000 turnover target: this would be £6,666 a month or £1,539 a week.

• How far away are you from hitting that currently? How many more clients do you need to get through the doors to hit that weekly and/or monthly target? What marketing do you need to put in place to hit this goal?

• Next, each month track marketing and takings, see what is working and if you’re hitting your goal.

• This will help you to focus better as trying to hit £1,539 a week sounds a lot more achievable than £80,000.

Implementing a strategy where you breakdown your goals into achievable bitesized chunks throughout the year should help you to reach your goals. You can even do this with your personal goals.

And don’t forget to use this process when considering your goals for 2025 – it’s only a few months away!

If you have chameleon hair clients who switch up their colour each appointment, INNOluxe FBR is a new primer that can help you to achieve their colouring dreams without causing damage.

The treatment combats Cysetic acid damage, created when hair takes on too much oxygen through brushing, age, heat styling, environmental aggressors and chemical processes, and which can lead to hair over absorbing colour. In addition, Disodium EDTA, a Chelating agent often found in clarifying shampoos, combats metals contamination enabling it to be washed out of the hair.

the Curl

Finding the right products to enhance natural waves, curls, coils and texture.

wWhilst how they style their hair is your clients’ personal choice, an increasing number of those with textured hair are opting to embrace their natural curls, coils and waves. To achieve the best results, whether it’s through heat styling or air drying, professionals should use products designed specifically for curl pattens Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly) and Type 4 (coiled).

It’s all about treating the hair correctly, as the experts at Alfaparf Milano (alfaparfmilanopro.com/gb-en) explain:

“Products play a crucial role in managing and styling curls effectively. They help enhance curl definition, manage frizz, provide moisture, and protect hair from damage,” explains Abigail Butler for L’Oreal Professionnel (lorealprofessionnel.co.uk). “Using the right products tailored to your curl type – whether wavy or coily - can make a significant difference in achieving your desired curl definition and overall hair health.”

What’s HOT in Hair

Leading stylists highlight the most in-demand cuts and colours for the season.

The Micro Fringe

“Micro Fringes can be soft and wispy or blunt and bold, and pair well with multiple hair textures and lengths. Especially trendy right now are the contrasting lengths of a micro fringe with very long hair, or contrasting textures of a smooth styled micro fringe next to textured hair” - Teresa Romero (@_teresa_romero), Creative Director for Sam Villa (pros.samvilla.com) and Artistic/ Education Director for Jose Luis Salon.

The Box Bob

“The Box Bob is a structured short bob that stops at the chin and has a square shape which frames the face, like a box which is where it gets its name from. The Box Bob is great [for] naturally fine or thin hair, as it’s not about volume it’s more about the shape and movement of the style. It’s a low maintenance ‘cool girl’ vibe and can be adapted to suit every face shape and hair texture” - Katie Allan, Founder of MAYFIVE Hair (mayfivehair.co.uk).

Ribbon Lights

“The Ribbon Lights colour trend is a beautiful, layered colour trend we’ll no doubt see more of in 2024. Think of it being a progression of the Tiramisu trend from spring 2023 that had three different shades of brown: a warm tan shade with a yellow undertone, a deep warm brown, and a light brown with gold to reflect. Ribbon Lights is a technique designed to create a natural-looking blend that weaves luminosity throughout your locks” - Jake Nugent, OSMO Ambassador (osmo.uk.com).

The Textured Crop

“The Textured Crop can be worn in many ways, but I love to pair this with a fade at the back and sides, ensuring they are cut shorter than the top and then add lots of texture into the top section of the hair for that super trendy finish. This also looks great when paired with a fringe for serious ‘cool guy’ vibes. This is also a good choice for those who may struggle with their hair thinning as the layers and choppiness within the cut help to provide the illusion of thicker hair.” – Jim Shaw, Grooming Expert (jimshawstyle.co.uk).
