Industry shows positive growth, says British Beauty Council report
The British Beauty Council has released its latest Value of Beauty Report, stating that last year the UK beauty industry saw a 10% growth in workforce and an 11% increase in sales. Although inflation is expected to slow next year along with price rises, annual growth is forecast to be higher than the natural average in 2024, peaking at 3% year-on-year.
According to the report compiled by Oxford Economics, the industry workforce grew to more than 603,000 people last year, and generated sales of £27.2bn for both products and services. This is close to the pre-Covid average of £28bn.
Millie Kendall OBE, CEO of the British Beauty Council, comments:
“We have almost returned to our 2019 peak economically, despite structural and economic challenges.
“We’ve had to be dynamic and pivot - looking to China, USA, Australia, Middle East and India to help grow our exports in the face of increased red tape when trading with the EU.”
She adds:
“Beyond export, beauty’s domestic influence is astounding, bolstered by the opening of Sephora in the UK.”

Technology pioneered at the University of Bradford’s Centre for Skin Sciences (CSS) is being used to create new tanning products formulated with pigmentation peptides that encourage the body to tan itself without the need for exposure to the sun or UV rays.
Coegin Pharma and the university began collaborating in 2019, and having obtained full commercial rights, the Swedish biotech firm aims to launch the first cosmetic tanning product using these patented pigmentation peptides in 2026.
The peptides imitate a naturally occurring protein that affects melanin production and transportation, encouraging the body’s natural melanocytes to rise to the skin’s surface and create the same effect as a natural tan.
This method also has the potential to address pigmentation concerns such hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation (e.g. vitiligo), restoring natural hair pigmentation to treat greying hair, and decreasing pigmentation on brown warts and age spots.

HOW PROPER STERILIZATION
The role of in sterilization
Autoclaves are the most effective method for sterilizing tools in a beauty salon. They use specific condition such as steam under high pressure to kill all microorganisms on the tools, ensuring they are completely safe for use. While there are various types of autoclaves available on the market, the Enbio S Beauty Edition stands out for several reasons.
What makes the Enbio S Beauty Edition stand out?
In the beauty industry, maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and safety is not just a best practice, it’s a necessity. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened awareness, and now more than ever, clients seek out salons that maintain high cleanliness standards. One of the most critical steps in ensuring safety is the proper sterilization of tools used daily for treatments such as manicures, pedicures, and other beauty services.
Enter the Enbio S Beauty Edition, the latest innovation in autoclave technology designed specifically for beauty professionals.
Why Sterilization is crucial in the beauty industry
Sterilization is the process of eliminating all forms of microbial life, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores. In beauty salons, tools frequently come into direct contact with the skin, nails and even blood, which increases the risk of infections if proper sterilization isn’t followed. Tools like nail clippers, cuticle pushers and tweezers are often reused between clients, and if they aren’t properly sterilized they could spread infections such as fungal diseases or even serious conditions like hepatitis.
This makes sterilization a key aspect not just of cleanliness, but of ensuring client health and safety. Ignoring this can severely impact a salon’s reputation, and more importantly, compromise the health of clients, leading to potential legal and financial repercussions.
The Enbio S Beauty Edition is crafted specifically for the beauty industry, making it the perfect choice for salons looking to streamline their sterilization process. Some of its standout features include:
• Quick Sterilization Cycles: It completes sterilization in just seven minutes, reducing downtime and allowing for faster tool turnover.
• User-Friendly Interface: The intuitive touchscreen is easy for staff to operate, ensuring consistent sterilization and reducing the chance of mistakes.
• Compact and Stylish Design: Its sleek and lightweight design makes it suitable for both small and large salons.
• Quiet Operation: The Enbio S operates quietly, which is an advantage for salons aiming to maintain a calm and serene environment.
In today’s competitive beauty industry, clients are increasingly prioritising safety. Investing in a reliable autoclave like the Enbio S Beauty Edition is a smart move that ensures the highest hygiene standards, builds client trust, and ultimately strengthens a salon’s reputation. Proper sterilization is not just a health requirement, it’s a critical business strategy.
Elevate your salon’s reputation with the Enbio autoclave. Ensure fast, medical-grade sterilization, prioritize client safety, and stand out with exceptional hygiene standards.
Katie B. Nail salon owner
”The Enbio autoclave is incredibly efficient and easy to use. Its compact design fits perfectly in my beauty salon, and the fast sterilization cycle allow me to serve more clients in less time. Highly recommend!”

Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, the vegan mask’s active ingredients combine a blend of adaptogens, vitamins and antioxidants including Ashwagandha to enhance cell regeneration, antioxidant Red Clover and vitamin B3 complex Niacinamide.
In addition, the skin’s microbiome is supported by Aurafirm, derived from fermented oats, and Pentavitin®, from corn kernels, which binds to the skin’s natural keratin to form a moisture barrier that prevents water loss.
Lavender, Geranium, Frankincense and Patchouli Essential Oils deliver a calming and balancing aroma.

How introducing permanent jewellery to your salon business can generate additional income.
SHINE BRIGHT
NNothing ever stands still in beauty and hair, that’s part of its appeal to us as professionals. New and innovative services are introduced that not only ensure your salon or mobile business stays ahead of the competition when it comes to trends, but also enables you to run a profitable business with more than one income stream.
Whilst piercing and retailing jewellery have long been profitable additions to salon services, the last couple of years have seen Permanent Jewellery emerge as an exciting new business opportunity.
“The concept of permanent jewellery is simple yet impactful,” says Millie Rose Homewood, who runs permanent jewellery courses and mentors entrepreneurs to build a profitable business.
“Clients choose a precious metal chain that is then custom-fitted and welded directly onto their wrist, ankle, or neck, creating a seamless, clasp-free piece of jewellery that they can wear long-term. Meaningful charms, such as initials, birthstones and symbols, can also be added.”
“Everyone loves treating themselves to something sparkly, with the added benefit of no clasps and no fuss,” explains explains Jemma Ball, salon owner, permanent jewellery artist and founder of Links Permanent Jewellery Supplies.
“Most of our clients come in groups - friends, or mothers and daughters. It also makes for a great gift idea, and we tend to sell a lot of gift vouchers, especially around Christmas.”
“Clients come for permanent jewellery for many reasons, such as to mark a relationship with loved ones, celebrate birthdays, hen parties, anniversaries, or simply because they want a beautiful, bespoke piece of jewellery,” says Millie Rose. “Clients often comment that they love having a meaningful piece that fits them perfectly and does not tarnish.”
“[At WELD™], we very quickly realised that permanent jewellery is all about the experience, much like beauty services,” says Rebecca Abram of WELD™ Permanent Jewellery.. “It’s about
“The last couple of years have seen Permanent Jewellery emerge as an exciting new business opportunity.”
making people feel special, and that’s what the beauty industry is really good at! We know how to make clients feel comfortable, cared for and confident – that’s been our secret to success. When someone chooses permanent jewellery, they’re not just getting a piece of jewellery, they’re creating a memory.
“We’ve blended the personal touch of beauty services with the creativity of jewellery design, and it’s proven to be the perfect combination.”
Permanent jewellery in the salon
“It’s a fantastic new service to offer in salons. We’ve found that it brings in lots of new clients, as well as familiar faces too. It’s also extremely profitable and caught my interest because you don’t need to book out a large amount of time,” explains Jemma. “Beyond its appeal to clients, permanent jewellery is a fantastic addition for beauty professionals seeking to expand their service offerings, or even as a standalone business for individuals from any background,” says Millie Rose. “The benefit is that it allows our students to earn more in a shorter period, giving them more freedom with their time. We believe in working smarter, not harder.
“Whether it’s offered as a standalone service or as a pop-up at events, permanent jewellery allows professionals to boost their income while providing a service that clients genuinely love. It’s fun, creative and you get to celebrate people’s special life moments with them.”
Depending on the types of chains and charms you stock, you may be able to charge from £40 for sterling silver bracelets and anklets up to £250 for solid gold necklaces.
What will you need?
Before you can introduce permanent jewellery into your beauty or hair business, you’ll need to undertake professional training. Choosing an ABT Accredited course will enable you to add the service to your Full Beauty membership & Insurance at no additional cost.
You’ll also need to invest in a Welder that has been specially designed for welding permanent jewellery, which could cost between £1,000£1,500, safety equipment, tools and, of course, a selection of jewellery. Check with your training provider what equipment they recommend and whether they offer kits to support you starting in business.
Is it a good investment?
“As a salon owner for over 12 years, I’ve seen many trends come and go. However, none has had the impact that permanent jewellery has brought to my business,” comments Millie Rose Homewood. “Since introducing this service two years ago, permanent jewellery has quickly become our most popular and profitable addition, and it’s clear that it’s here to stay.”
“With our roots in the beauty industry, specialising in permanent makeup and skincare, diving into jewellery felt like a bold move,” explains Rebecca Abram. “Two years ago, though, we saw the rising trend and decided to take the plunge and we’ve never looked back”. Since launching, WELD™ Permanent Jewellery has been featured in Tatler magazine’s jewellery edit and become the official training provider for major fashion-forward jewellery brands including Missoma.
She adds:
“For any beauty professionals thinking about venturing into permanent jewellery - we’d say go for it! The permanent jewellery trend is here to stay and is an amazing addition to your business! Not only will it attract new customers, it has an incredible ROI and is so much fun to do. It’s injected life in to our salon again.”
Take a look at a selection of permanent jewellery training opportunities that are ABT Accredited and will help you introduce this lucrative and exciting new service…
“The demand [for permanent jewellery] has been so strong that, 18 months ago, we began training others to incorporate permanent jewellery into their own businesses, explains Millie Rose Homewood. “For those who wish to offer permanent jewellery, we’ve created training programmes, both online and in person, that provide individuals with everything they need to get started.”
Millie Rose Homewood’s ABT Accredited Permanent Jewellery courses comprise 30 prerecorded modules that cover how to carry out the service, plus marketing modules (“Because it’s just as important to know how to promote the service as it is to offer it,” says Millie Rose).
In addition, there’s unlimited support in the Training Academy’s group of like-minded permanent jewellery professionals, monthly live calls, professional images so you can start advertising your service and business templates.

Perma Jewel from Goodman Bros. offers the essentials, including ABT Accredited Training, to enable you to start your permanent jewellery business.
“Offering permanent jewellery sets your business apart in a competitive jewellery market. It’s a unique niche that can attract customers seeking distinctive, long-lasting pieces rather than massproduced items,” say the brand.
Perma Jewel provide a variety of pulse-arc welding machines with full training and support, quality chains in a variety of styles and metals including Sterling Silver, 14ct Gold Filled, 9ct, 14ct, 18ct Gold) plus add-on charms and connectors in assorted metals along with in-shop furnishings, point of sale and marketing materials.
WELD™ Permanent Jewellery offers ABT Accredited training in-person and digitally.
“We’re proud to say, with support from the team at ABT, our courses were the first to be accredited in the UK. This was a game-changer and the response has been beyond what we imagined,” says Rebecca Abram, Director at WELD™ Permanent Jewellery.
Rebecca adds: “We’ve had the privilege of training many beauty professionals who are now thriving with this service in their own salons. As we continue to grow, we’re expanding our wholesale line with exciting new ranges of charms and chains, ensuring that permanent jewellery artists in the UK can access high quality on trend products.”
Jemma Elizabeth Academy launched ABT Accredited Permanent Jewellery training earlier this year, which not only covers the service itself but also how to brand your business and market permanent jewellery within the salon.
“When I first trained, there were very few permanent jewellery suppliers in the UK, and the US had much more exciting designs. I decided to learn everything about the manufacturing process of charms and chains. In July, we launched Links Permanent Jewellery Supplies, making it easier for our students to offer unique but high quality, luxury charms and chains to their own customers.”
Since introducing the service, Jemma and her team at Links have performed over 1,000 welds and are regularly fully booked both in the salon and at pop up events.
“The ABT Course Accreditation makes obtaining the correct insurance straight forward a significant benefit since insurance for permanent jewellery can sometimes be challenging to find,” explains Jemma.

FOR 50 YEARS The Microcurrent Pioneers
served as the foundation of the brand’s legacy in the industry for forward thinking efficacy and unrelenting quality.
Microcurrent is a safe, effective and non-invasive technology that has truly revolutionized professional skin care. By mirroring the body’s own natural low level electrical current, microcurrent technology can dramatically tone the facial contour, leaving the facial landscape visually lifted and the skin plump, hydrated and firm. Microcurrent is subsensory, which means it’s imperceptible, and makes for a comfortable and efficacious addition to nearly any service.
When it comes to electrical current and the skin, the “more is better” paradigm is clearly incorrect. Unfortunately, it’s a popular approach for some equipment suppliers that may show temporary, short term results with low quality machines. The human body is an extremely subtle electrical system and haphazardly delivering large charges of electricity to the
current well beyond the True Microcurrent zone because the technology required to ensure that we are maintaining consistent energy levels while compensating for skin impedance, levels of hydration and other biological factors is extremely expensive and proprietary to Bio-Therapeutic.
Bio-Therapeutic’s microcurrent technology is built on our proprietary and revolutionary Suzuki Sequencing platform that delivers proven and safe sequencing patterns to elicit very precise results on the skin. By clinically understanding what frequencies are demonstrated most successful in achieving specific results, our proprietary programming offers a precisely targeted approach that optimizes the potential for each client, and allows for faster, more effective, and more consistent results than other forms of microcurrent. Our unique, pre-programmed technology take the guesswork out of delivering superb results consistently.
“Microcurrent is a safe, effective and non-invasive technology that has truly revolutionized professional skin care.”
Frequency Specific Microcurrent can deliver an incredible number of benefits to the skin and is one of the most valuable additions to any professional service and home regimen.
• Exceptional results for lifting, toning and sculpting the facial landscape.
• Reducing fine lines and skin puffiness.
• Improving skin tone and clarity.
• Stimulating the production of Adenosine Triphosphate, the building block of cellular energy and skin resilience.
• Well hydrated skin that enhances product application and absorption, helping to boost the performance of key skin care products.
Unlike other technologies in the skin care arena, microcurrent is subsensory and invisible, so it is difficult for a skin therapist to visually evaluate. This is why it is absolutely critical to work with a manufacturer who has demonstrated long standing technological expertise with the technology, and has established trust in maintaining exceptional quality standards, executes all aspects of engineering and manufacturing and provides the robust training needed to get the most out of this transformative technology.
Bio-Therapeutic not only introduced microcurrent into the world of professional skin care nearly 50 years ago, but is also the foremost expert in the space today and continues to set the standard of excellence. As a US FDA registered medical device manufacturer, Bio-Therapeutic designs and assembles all of its technology in its Seattle, Washington headquarters. We’re also ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified, were the first company in our class to achieve the coveted MDSAP status internationally, and ensure that all our of equipment is CE compliant for the highest level of safety.
David Suzuki is President and CEO of Bio-Therapeutic and a Licensed Skin Therapist. Learn more about microcurrent and how it can assist your treatment results by contacting the Bio-Therapeutic team.
TThere is a huge ‘Therapist’ element to being a Beauty Therapist, Holistic Therapist, Nail Tech or Hairdresser, and with that comes great responsibility, one that should not be taken lightly.
The beauty and hair sectors are very personal industries, we provide a very personal service. When we provide a tanning treatment or a massage, our client has to trust us and feel comfortable enough to remove their clothes. When we give a manicure, we are literally holding our client’s hands as they talk to us. The same with a facial, a client often has their eyes closed and isn’t looking at us whilst they relax and we provide our service.
In all of these instances, we often find our client will start to open up and offload some of their innermost thoughts and feelings. Your client may tell you things that they have, in many cases, never uttered to another person. Things they haven’t even told their closest friends and family for fear of judgement.
I always feel very privileged when a client shares their worries and thoughts with me. Ultimately it is because, in the nicest possible way, I don’t matter. I don’t judge, but equally my judgement doesn’t mean anything anyway, I’m nobody. They are also confident that I will not pass on any information they tell me and what they say will go no further than the four walls we are in.
Just listen
Our job is to listen, we aren’t there to pass judgement or make suggestions, we are there to listen. But when I say listen I mean truly listen, not just hear, there is a massive difference. Of course, if the client asks for help or advice, or what you would do given
the situation, then you shouldn’t ignore them; what I mean is don’t just chip in your two pennyworths without being asked.
Sometimes people just want to offload and by doing so that makes the whole situation better for them; remember the old saying. a problem shared is a problem halved. Others may well want you to help them to find a solution to whatever concerns them. Read the situation and act accordingly. If they want to just keep talking, let them.
Have a ‘go to’ list of support
In any event, I always strongly recommend every beauty or hair professional keeps a directory of organisations and phone numbers that you can direct clients too. There are things that we can be a supportive and understanding ear for, but there are other things that are far beyond our remit and need more expert help. So having a list of ‘go to’ numbers and websites is really important.
I have found having this information has been invaluable in supporting clients over the last 30+ years. Your support and care will still be invaluable alongside this, your listening ear, your encouragement and your kindness, but we must know our limitations and not overstep into a territory that isn’t ours.
Don’t shy away from this part of your job, don’t be embarrassed or feel awkward. The elements of supporting and listening are just as important as waxing legs, painting nails and providing aftercare.
Provide a full service to your clients, demonstrate how interested you are in them, and as I constantly say to my daughter, always take the opportunity to show kindness because if you can help someone, why wouldn’t you?
“Our job is to listen, we aren’t there to pass judgement or make suggestions”
Listening of The
Importance
Marie-Louise Coster advises how you to support clients who offload and confide in you.
Compile a directory of organisations and charities so you can easily signpost clients to more specific, professional help should they confide in you. This could include:
• Local counselling and talking therapy services
• Charities that support those experiencing domestic violence
• LGBTQ organisations
• Mental health services
• Parental support such as baby loss or Post Natal Depression care
• Suicide prevention helplines
• Grief counselling services
• Charities that support devastating medical diagnosis such as cancer support etc.
• Children’s mental health services
• Support services for carers
• Debt relief and financial advice services
• Citizens Advice

WOOD THERAPY
Tea Jaksic explains the ancient technique of Maderotherapy for body shaping and addressing cellulite.
“Maderotherapy is a non-invasive and a pain-free approach that relaxes, sculpts and supports post-surgery recovery.”
BBeing a woman comes with pros and cons, and one of the cons is definitely having cellulite. That shouldn’t be a problem for your clients anymore if you embrace the technique of Wood Therapy. In the sea of body shaping and anti-cellulite treatments, Wood Therapy, aka Maderotherapy, is a real refreshment. Not just because it’s completely natural, but also non-invasive and a pain-free approach to body and face massage that relaxes, sculpts and supports postsurgery recovery.
It was around 1000 B.C.E. that the ancient Japanese and Chinese used the first wooden tools for the purpose of massage. Since then, Wood Therapy has become one of the most popular body and face shaping techniques in Colombia and Latin America, spreading across Europe.
Still relatively new in the UK and Ireland, this holistic massage technique is based on the use of specially designed wooden tools in different shapes and sizes that assist with lymphatic drainage.
Fast and vigorous movements penetrate deep into the hypodermis, detaching fat cells from the muscle and eliminating them from the body through the lymphatic system. For smoother skin, body toning and the treatment of cellulite, only massage will make this happen. Fascinating, is it not?
Pretty much the same happens with face shaping and double chin elimination.
Additionally, slow and smooth movements applied to the body deliver a perfectly relaxing treatment, even if clients aren’t looking for body shaping results.
And there’s more; Wood Therapy has become one of the most natural postsurgery recovery therapies for treatments such as liposuction or tummy tucks, effectively reducing swelling, bruising, pain and stiffness.
Speeding up recovery
At the same time this amazing treatment prevents or treats fibrosis and seroma which are the most common contraindications after surgery. It generally speeds up the recovery process giving the body its final touch – shape!
Therefore, it’s not surprising that even the famous use this effective treatment as a secret weapon against cellulite. In 2021, Naomi Campbell shared all that goes into her perfectly smooth, mile-long legs; and one of the treatments was Wood Therapy. Last summer, Tracee Ellis Ross sent Wood Therapy viral when she posted a video on her Instagram feed practicing Wood Therapy on her body.
So, if celebrities have already discovered wood therapy – it’s a matter of time before every other woman does the same.

cancellations Are wrecking your business?
More Tips for Reducing Cancellations
Appointment Reminders: Use automated reminders via text or email to reduce the likelihood of clients forgetting their appointments. Many booking systems offer this feature.
Loyalty Programs: Reward clients who consistently show up for their appointments. This can be in the form of discounts, free services or points that accumulate towards a reward.
Transparent Communication: Clearly communicate your cancellation policy at the time of booking and include it in confirmation emails. Transparency helps clients remember and respect your policy.
Follow-Up: If a client does cancel, follow up with a friendly message or call. This personal touch can encourage them to reschedule rather than simply cancel.
IIn the hair and beauty industry, no-shows and last-minute cancellations can wreak havoc on your schedule and your bottom line. Addressing this issue effectively requires a proactive approach and firm policies.
Recently, I discussed this topic on my podcast, The Life of KG, and received an overwhelming response. Here are some strategies to help minimise cancellations and protect your business.
Extend your cancellation notice period
Many salons operate with a 24-hour cancellation policy but extending this to 48 hours can make a huge difference. This extra day gives you more time to fill the white space and arrange for necessary preparations, such as patch tests.
If you don’t already have a cancellation policy, it’s crucial to implement one immediately. You can’t hold clients accountable for cancellations if there’s no policy in place.
Consistency is key. Having a policy is just the first step, enforcing it consistently is what truly matters. Be clear and precise in your wording, and ensure your team understands when to enforce the policy.
By requiring a deposit that covers your cancellation fee, you ensure that you’re compensated even if a client cancels.
Most booking software makes this process simple and automated, removing the burden from you and your team. Additionally, deposits can be collected over the phone, ensuring every appointment is secured financially.
If a client cancels, you still have their deposit and if you fill the slot, you come out ahead.
Educate your clients
Clients often don’t realise the financial impact of cancellations on your business. Use social media and other platforms to educate them.
“Clients often don’t realise the financial impact of cancellations on your business.”
Ideally, the policy should apply to all cancellations except in genuine emergencies. This approach not only protects your business but also sets clear expectations for your clients.
Remember, you’re running a business and you need to treat your income seriously. Clients will respect your business more if you do.
Implement a deposit system
Taking deposits is not a new concept but, surprisingly, many salons still don’t do it. Deposits can significantly reduce the number of cancellations.
For instance, on my Instagram page @kg_katiegodfrey, I’ve shared a breakdown of the potential financial losses from daily, monthly and yearly cancellations. Sharing this information professionally can help clients understand why your policies are necessary.
Running a successful hair or beauty salon means balancing excellent client service with firm business practices. By extending your cancellation notice period, implementing a deposit system and consistently enforcing your policies, you can minimise the impact of cancellations.
Educating your clients about the importance of these policies will also help them understand and respect your business decisions.
By taking these steps, you can protect your business from the effects of cancellations and ensure a smoother, more profitable business. Feel free to reach out to me for further advice and tips on managing your beauty business effectively.

“TikTok’s
algorithm loves fresh content so even if your client base is small, you have a shot at reaching a huge audience.”
In part 4 of our series on social media, Alicia Humphreys share why TikTok is a game-changing in salon marketing.
Unlocking the Power of
IIf you’ve been curious about TikTok but aren’t quite sure how to dive in, there’s no better time to get started. TikTok is no longer just a platform for dance trends and funny cat videos, it’s a goldmine for hair and beauty businesses.
With its lively vibe and massive user base, TikTok offers an incredible opportunity to showcase your business’ creativity, attract new clients and have a bit of fun while you’re at it! Let’s explore how you can make the most of TikTok and maybe even go viral.
Why TikTok is a must for your business
First things first, why should you even bother with TikTok? Well, for starters, TikTok is where millions of people, especially the younger crowd, spend their time. And
guess what? They’re not just watching, they’re engaging, sharing and discovering new brands every day. For those in the hair and beauty industry, TikTok’s short-form video format is perfect for showing off those stunning hair transformations, sharing quick styling tips and hopping on the latest trends.
The best part? TikTok’s algorithm loves fresh, creative content, meaning even if your client base is small, you have a shot at reaching a huge audience. By joining in on viral challenges and sharing your expertise, you’re not just increasing your visibility, you’re building a community of hair and beauty enthusiasts who can’t wait to see what you’ll post next.
First impressions matter
Ready to get started? Your TikTok journey begins with setting up a profile that screams, “This is who we are, and we’re fabulous!”
Choose a username that’s easy to remember and reflects your business’ name, nothing too complicated. Your profile picture should be your business logo or a polished image that represents your brand.
Think of your bio as a mini elevator pitch: what makes your business special? What kind of content will people see? Add keywords like “hair transformations” or “beauty tips” to help people find you. And don’t forget to link to your website or booking system so that your TikTok fans can easily become paying clients.
Cracking the TikTok algorithm code
Now, let’s talk about the TikTok algorithm, your new best friend. TikTok decides what content to show people based on how much others interact with it. So, if your videos get lots of likes, comments and shares, you’re more likely to land on the coveted “For You” page, where millions of users could discover your salon.
To boost your chances, create content that encourages interaction. Ask questions, invite opinions or even hold mini-contests. Using trending sounds, hashtags and challenges also gives you a better shot at being discovered.
Remember, consistency is key. Post regularly to keep your profile active and to signal to TikTok that you’re in it to win it.
Crafting content that captivates
Transformation Videos: One of the most powerful tools in your TikTok arsenal? Transformation videos! People love a good before-and-after, especially when it comes to hair. Start with a shot of your client’s “before” look, then document the process, whether it’s a bold colour change,
a stylish cut or a glamorous updo. Finish with the “after” shot that shows off the stunning results.
Add some upbeat music and catchy captions and you’ve got a video that’s both entertaining and informative. Bonus points if you tag your client and include their testimonial, it’s a great way to add authenticity and encourage shares.
Share the Knowledge: Another way to shine on TikTok is by sharing your expertise. People are always looking for quick and easy styling tips, so why not be the one to provide them? From how to get the perfect beach waves to taming frizz, there’s a tutorial waiting to be made.
Keep it simple and concise, your followers will appreciate tips they can try at home. And by using products and tools from your salon, you’re subtly promoting your services as well.
Participate in Viral Challenges: Finally, don’t be afraid to jump on the viral challenge bandwagon. These trends can spread like wildfire and participating is a great way to get noticed. Just make sure the challenge aligns with your brand and put your unique spin on it.
Whether it’s a team dance-off or a creative take on a popular trend, these videos show that your business is up-to-date and in the mix. Plus, they’re just plain fun!
Ready, Set, TikTok!
So, there you have it, your friendly guide to getting started on TikTok. It’s an exciting platform full of potential for your hair and beauty business. By setting up a strong profile, understanding the algorithm and creating engaging content, you’re well on your way to building a vibrant online presence. And who knows? Your next video might just be the one that goes viral. Happy TikToking!

Buildable volume without any crunch
Amika’s new volumising finishing spray promises instant root lift without stiffness or crunch on fine to medium hair types.
Created to revitalise limp, lifeless hair, Amika Rising Star enables buildable root lift for visibly fuller-looking hair that is still soft to the touch. It is formulated with Carob Seed Extract for stronger, fuller-looking strands, and Hydrolyzed Soy Protein to increase the diameter of the fibre for more voluminous-looking hair. Colours,
cuts & updos for autumn ‘24
Cinder Toffee Brunette
“A rich and intense tone for the brunettes… tones are totally warm and combine chocolate, caramels and intense golds to give a reflective and youthful shine to the hair,” says Tom Smith (tomsmithhd. com), International Artist in Residence at Billi Currie, Artist at Olaplex and International Creative Colour Director at Evo. “This can be achieved with an all over colour or incorporated into a darker base with various dimensional tones in high/low lights.”
The Tiara Bun
“A regal bun, polished or textured, that sits on the crown of the head is a great choice to lift the face and add height, and glamour to your look. It can be all secured and swept up, or you can leave strands out around the face to soften the look,” says Tom Smith (tomsmithhd.com),
“A great option for day two, three or beyond, this style is easier to achieve when the hair is not too fluffy or clean, although a fluffier bun can also work well with the help of a dry texturizing spray.”
Power Platinum
“Platinum hair colour for men is not going anywhere anytime soon and platinum can instantly make a client’s hair cut make more of a statement and be trendier,”explains Jim Shaw (jimshawstyle.co.uk), Owner and Director of TONI&GUY Billericay.
“I particularly love teaming a platinum hue with a super short, textured cut for added edge. Following taking your clients to this clean, ice white hue, be sure to spend some time with the client discussing platinum upkeep at home too.”
Terracopper
“Terracopper is a rich and intense terracotta, copper shade that is just a bit bolder than anaturally occurring redhead,” explains Tom Smith (tomsmithhd. com), International Artist in Residence at Billi Currie, Artist at Olaplex and International Creative Colour Director at Evo.
“This can be achieved all over as a ‘global’ colour or can be done with a semipermanent gloss on top of highlights or balayage.”
Tom adds: “Great on those with fairer complexions or those who have pink undertones to this skin, the warmth of this shade can help the skin to appear more golden and rich.”
Invisible Texturizing
“My most used technique behind the chair is invisible texturizing. It texturizes hair from within without any visible signs of cutting, so it creates lots of beautiful movement,” says Ellen Devine (@Ellendevinehair) of the Sam Villa ArTeam and Master Stylist at Lunatic Fringe.
“We often just texturize the ends, but that type of texturizing blends hair, versus cutting the mid-section which makes it move. So, when creating invisible texture focus on the mid-section of the hair.”

Pleated Upstyles
“A technique I have been using a ton lately is what I like to call “pleating”. I’m having so much fun with it and finding a way to use it on almost every upstyle,” explains Anna Peters, Sam Villa ArTeam Member and owner of re:TREAT Color + Hair Design and Studio (@annas_hair_retreat). “It was inspired by a pinch and pull action to create texture through upstyles. I loved the beautiful soft dimension you get from it, but I wanted to elevate it with a soft edge, so I started ironing in pleats with the Sam Villa Professional Flat Iron. This makes the dimension pop and show up beautifully in photos! You can see the left side with no pleats and right side with pleats.”
