Trevor Sorbie MBE
1949 – 2024
The hair industry is mourning the loss of Trevor Sorbie MBE who passed away, aged 75, on 8th November 2024.
Trevor Sorbie was a four-time British Hairdresser of the Year and renowned as the creator of The Wedge cut in 1974 and The Scrunch drying technique in 1979. He was revered for his innovation, creativity, talent and compassion.
After opening his first barbershop in North London, Sorbie joined Vidal Sassoon in 1972, where he became Artistic Director before moving onto Toni & Guy and John Frieda. He opened his first eponymous hair salon in 1977; there are now six Trevor Sorbie hair salons in the UK, along with one in Dubai and one in China, employing in excess 70 stylists and technicians.
Sorbie gained wider fame through his media work and authored two books on styling. He also launched his own range of hair care products.
In 2004, Trevor Sorbie was recognised for his services to hairdressing being appointed as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
In later years he dedicated time to charity work, founding mynewhair in 2006 to support a national network of over 1,000 hair professionals in wig styling services for those
experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia and other medical conditions. He also offered a free wig customisation service to cancer patients in his own home in Hampshire.
“mynewhair isn’t just about hair, it’s psychological medicine for people suffering from hair loss through illness and for many people it’s the missing link in their treatment.”
He added: “I’m world-famous, but mynewhair means more to me. God gave me a gift and I’ve used it pretty well up until now. This is perhaps

Christmas
January offers a fresh start and the ideal moment for clients to reset their beauty routines. In this article, we’ll explore how you can leverage your Christmas bookings to ensure a steady stream of clients in the new year.
“Use the festive atmosphere to your advantage by encouraging clients to book their January appointments during their December visit.”
Client gifts with a purpose
Have you considered gifting your clients something special this Christmas? A small token of appreciation not only shows gratitude for their loyalty but can also be a clever marketing move. Branded gifts keep your business at the forefront of their minds, or consider offering a small voucher to use in January to encourage them to return. Thoughtful gifts can build goodwill while driving repeat business in the new year.
Promote pre-bookings for January
Use the festive atmosphere to your advantage by encouraging clients to book their January appointments during their December visit. Sweeten the deal with incentives like a small discount, voucher or complimentary treatment add-on for those who secure their next beauty session in advance. This ensures a steady stream of clients in January and helps you manage your diary more efficiently.
Create “New Year, New You” packages
Capitalise on the ‘New Year, New You’ mindset by offering tailored beauty packages focused on renewal and self-care. These packages could include treatments that refresh the skin, transform hair or enhance wellness.
Position these as the perfect way for clients to begin the year looking and feeling their best.
Emphasise skincare and self-care
The holiday season often wreaks havoc on skin with late nights and indulgent food. Promote treatments that address common post-holiday skincare issues, encouraging clients to invest in a fresh start for their complexion.
Highlight the importance of beginning the new year with a glowing, healthy appearance and offer targeted treatments to help them achieve it.
Host a January beauty event
Consider hosting a special beauty event at the start of January to introduce your services and expertise. This event could include mini-treatments, consultations and product demonstrations, giving clients the chance to try something new.
It’s a fun way to celebrate the new year while helping your clients explore their beauty resolutions for 2025.
Boost retail sales
Don’t forget to push your retail products as part of your January strategy. Clients will need to replenish their beauty supplies after the holidays, so make sure your shelves are well-stocked. Promote your retail lines across social media and email marketing to remind clients they can keep up their beauty routines at home with the best products.
By planning strategically and encouraging your clients to think ahead, you can maintain a busy schedule into the new year. Help your clients kick off January feeling confident while keeping your diary full! Hope this helps you plan for a successful start to the year.

Soothe skin & reduce ingrown hairs post-waxing
Harley Wax has developed its Ingrown Hair Solution to address a range of problems that clients may experience between waxing treatments.
The product not only reduces the risk of ingrown hair, but also helps soothe and soften the skin.
It is formulated with four active ingredients that work in synergy to keep irritation and inflammation at bay when applied after a Harley Wax. Dead skin cells are exfoliated thanks to Salicylic Acid, preventing ingrown hairs by unclogging pores and reducing inflammation. In addition, Lactic Acid assists with exfoliation as well as softening and soothing the skin.
Witch Hazel Extract helps tighten pores and reduce irritated and inflamed skin whilst Arnica Montanan Flower Extract, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, reduces swelling and redness caused by ingrown hairs promoting faster healing.

“The underlash is the biggest trend of the year!” says Lisa Stone, Educator and Lash Expert for Salon System. “For fast and speedy application [Salon System] cluster style underlashes are applied under your natural lashes to give a flawless seamless look giving the eyes a depth and volume and texture that can last up to seven days. They can be easily applied in the salon or at home, too, so a great retail opportunity for salons and lash experts.”
Coloured lashes have also been big this year, a trend that is set to continue into 2025, in particular creating bespoke shades of warm browns and burgundy.
“Brown lashes are super popular right now! Alot of my clients have all been opting for a blend of light browns and dark brows to go with the softer makeup trends at the moment,” says lash artist and ABT Accredited educator Leah McKenzie. “A lot of makeup brands are also starting to push brown and burgundy mascaras, so these tones will most probably filter into lash trends too.”
Take a look at some of the latest lash products...
The Hive® Lash tinting system includes five intermixable base tints that act as a platform to an endless array of customised colours and tones.
To hit the trend for warmer lash colours, mix Hive® No. 1 Impact Black with No. 2 Uptown Brown (pictured) or No. 4 Urban Grey. For clients who prefer a classic smoky eye look, Hive® No. 1 Impact Black can be used alone as a long-lasting colour and to create longer looking lashes.
Thanks to Cortex Colour Technology, Hive® Lash Tint quickly penetrates deep into the cortex of each individual hair to provide an intense, vibrant colour creating a voluminous appearance that can last up to six weeks.

The Magic of
Alicia Humphreys explains how to keep socials up to date during the festive season.
SOCIAL MEDIA Scheduling Tools
AAh, the festive period! It’s all about twinkling lights, mulled wine and the annual overindulgence of mince pies (yes, we’re guilty too).
But as a business owner, you know that while everyone else is decking the halls, you’re juggling back-to-back appointments, last-minute clients and the never-ending mission of making your salon’s social media sparkle.
The hustle doesn’t have to feel like a Christmas cracker gone wrong. Enter social media scheduling tools, a true gift for anyone wanting to stay present with family, friends and eggnog, while still keeping their brand visible online.
Here’s why (and how) you can take advantage of these magical tools this festive season!
My go-to scheduling tool: Metricool
I’m not just telling you to use scheduling tools, I live by them. Metricool is my personal favourite. Why? It’s user-friendly, offers comprehensive analytics and lets me manage multiple accounts in one place (a total win for someone managing both personal and client socials!). Metricool lets me pre-schedule posts, track their performance and even auto-reply to messages, all while I’m off roasting chestnuts!
By scheduling content in advance, you ensure:
• Consistency, staying on your audience’s radar, even if you’re busy trimming the tree.
• Less stress, meaning no more last-minute posting frenzies while in your reindeer onesie.
• Time to actually enjoy the holiday, because yes, even business owners deserve to sip hot chocolate in peace.
Top free tools to consider
If you’re not ready to splurge, don’t worry, there are some brilliant free social media scheduling tools available. Here are a few to check out:
1. BUFFER
3. PLANOLY
Buffer has been around the block and remains a solid, easy-to-use scheduling tool for Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and more. The free version lets you schedule up to 10 posts per platform, perfect for getting you schedule 30 posts a month.!
2. LATER
Later is excellent for visually planning your Instagram grid and its drag-anddrop feature makes scheduling posts a breeze. Plus, the free plan lets you through December!
For the visual planners out there, Planoly offers an aesthetic way to plan and schedule Instagram content. You can map out your grid, schedule posts and track engagement.
4. HOOTSUITE
While the free version only allows you to schedule a limited number of posts, it’s great for someone just starting out with multi-platform management.
5.
FACEBOOK BUSINESS SUITE
If you’re focusing solely on Facebook and Instagram, this tool from Meta offers robust scheduling and analytics for both platforms all for free!
How to make the most of scheduling
Plan your festive content now: Take some time to brainstorm what you’d like to share during the holiday season. Showcase your services, offer gift ideas, run a festive giveaway, or simply wish your followers a merry Christmas. The more engaging, the better!
Batch create content: Set aside a few hours to write captions, design graphics and shoot reels. Batch-creating content saves time and keeps you in a creative flow.
Engage while you’re away: While scheduling tools handle posting, remember that engagement, responding to comments and messages, goes a long way. Dedicate small chunks of time each day to engage with your audience or use tools like Metricool’s auto-response feature to keep things ticking over.
Using social media scheduling tools over the festive season means you can finally take a break without your online presence slipping. No matter which scheduler you use, just remember it’s all about balance. Enjoy the mince pies, play in the snow (if you’re lucky!) and trust your tools to keep your socials merry and bright.

PARTY
PerfectionPA
Glamour wave
• Section off the hair, starting at the back, to enable you to easily curl sections.
• Place the tong away from the face on each side, wrapping the hair around the tong and slightly turning the hair so that it doesn’t lay flat on the tong. Repeat this until all of the hair is curled.
• Using a wide metal comb, comb the curls into place setting it with hairspray. My personal choice is got2be hairspray.
Event stylist Chloe Cooper shares her hair tong hacks for creating glamourous party updos and curls.
Ponytail
• Using a 25mm tong, curl the whole head in alternate directions.
• Next separate the hair into two sections, parting from the back of the ear going up to the parting on each side. Tease the crown and twist the hair and pin to create texture.
• Place the ponytail where you want it to sit and secure using a hair band.
• Join both of the sides to the back of hair where the pony tail is. You can either leave hair down the front or bring it all back. Wrap both sides around the hair band so you cannot see this before teasing the ponytail to create volume.
Faux bouncy blowdry
• Section the hair into four sections: Mohawk section, two side sections and a back section.
• Separate the back section into three. Direct a 32mm tong towards the face, curling the hair from the root and working your way down. Pin the sections.
• Repeat this for the whole head however when you get to the Mohawk section, direct this away from the face.
• Ensure this sits for at least 30 minutes before taking out the pin curls, revealing lovely voluminous hair.
• The key to creating even more volume is using texturising spray, my favourite is the Drybar Triple Sec 3-In-1 Finishing Spray.
High Bun
• Start by curling all of the hair using a 25mm tong.
• Section the hair into two from the back of the ear going up.
• Taking the back section, create a French twist using pins to secure the knot place.
• Next add the front section into the up-do. You can either leave hair down the front or bring it all back, this is completely optional.
• Gather the front section and pin this up, pulling parts of the hair out to create volume and texture.
• Once all pinned securely, section the hair left out of the pins into three sections, twisting it and pulling it. Pin these sections into place to create a high bun. Adding pearls is optional however they add a fun festive feel to any style.
Sandstone pink introduces a subtle, earthy tone with warm beige and a whisper of pink. This grounded, balanced colour is a sophisticated alternative to traditional Millennial pink, appealing to a wide audience with its calming and stable aesthetic.
