EDiTORiAL A GREAT WHITE NORTH With the news of Saks Fifth Avenue being acquired by Hudson’s Bay’s chairman Richard Baker, the U.S. retail landscape is again making tectonic shifts. Baker has done an admirable job in bringing back Lord & Taylor—he knows what he knows and knows what he doesn’t know. He sticks to the financials and let the team (Barbara Zinn Moore) do what they do. The track record for Lord & Taylor is exemplary, as the main floor makeover is fantastic and the store has never looked better. However, Saks Fifth Avenue is a much different agenda, as Steve Sadove has managed a business hit hard by the recession, and came back strong with that ever fickle luxury consumer. Of course all of this is happening in the face of the ever-growing retail landscape. I believe this activity underscores the solid base that brick & mortar retail continues to enjoy. New blood is good for retail as it is good for the beauty business. The dynamics will continue to change but this signals that there is much about good ole brick and mortar and beauty advisors that remain essential to the foundation (no pun intended) to our business model. Hats off to Baker and his continued success in the U.S. retail market.

lizabeth Arden, Inc. is spilling the juice with its first flagship fragrance launch in decades, Untold. Following the announcement of an all-encompassing revamp of its legendary Elizabeth Arden brand last year, Untold represents the initial olfactory component of the effort “to shepherd this great brand back to its original glory,” said Kathy Widmer, Elizabeth Arden’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

And to create a juice befitting its modern and highly sophisticated conception, Arden tapped International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) perfumer Clement Gavarry to develop a sensual floral with the highest quality ingredients. Many of Untold’s ingredients were produced by the Laboratoire Monique Rèmy (LMR)—IFF’s in-house facility in Grasse that specializes in extracting natural raw materials—and therefore represent the best quality on the market.

The inspiration for the launch, she said, were life’s fleeting and mysterious moments—experienced in cherished privacy. Untold is the “baby sister” to classic Arden fragrances like Red Door, 5th Avenue and Green Tea, added Francine Gingras, the company’s vice president of global public relations.

The fragrance comprises: sparkling pink pepper fused with crisp bergamot, fruity accents of pear and blackcurrant bud LMR, gardenia, Egyptian jasmine LMR, patchouli heart LMR, sandalwood, heated ambers and musk. If Tom Brokaw called the 21st century the “Century of Women,” Widmer noted, Untold’s packaging embodies her multifaceted and versatile nature. Done in radiant, elegant gold and silver tones, the bottle is subtly curved so that its appearance is strikingly different from every angle. The fragrance launches next month at Elizabeth Arden counters nationwide and on elizabetharden. com. The full collection will BF include:

Inter Parfums, Inc. has entered into a 10.5-year exclusive worldwide license to create, produce, and distribute perfumes and related products under London-based luxury lingerie brand, Agent Provocateur. The agreement commences on August 1, 2013 and runs through December 31, 2023. Financo LLC acted as the financial advisor to Inter Parfums USA in connection with this transaction. The company plans to launch its first fragrance under the Agent Provocateur brand featuring iconic packaging in 2014. In addition, Inter Parfums will take over distribution of selected fragrances within the brand’s perfume portfolio and plans to revitalize the Agent Provocateur signature scent. Agent Provocateur has been opening doors at a steady growth and plans to continue to grow its door count, especially in Asia. Jean Madar, chairman and CEO of Inter Parfums, Inc. stated, “Agent Provocateur is an edgy, sophisticated, and decidedly upscale luxury brand with significant global appeal. Unilever announced the opening of Four Acres Singapore, the company’s second-ever global leadership development center—following the establishment of Four Acres London over 60 years ago—whose aim is to develop leaders with a “purpose-driven” approach to business, and therein an awareness of society’s broader needs. The company’s decision to locate the facility in Asia highlights its emphasis on emerging markets, which now account for over 55% of global revenues. Ms. Kux previously served on the Firmenich Board from May 2008 to October 2011, but had to step down at the end of her three-year term as her role in the Managing Board of Siemens AG required much of her time. Firmenich is delighted that she has chosen to rejoin its Board once more. Canadian scratch DJ—and literary and visual artist— Kid Koala partnered with International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) to incorporate scent into his performance at the Luminato Festival in Toronto last month. Perfumer Celine Barel created five different scents

alongside Kid Koala at IFF’s New York labs, which were inspired by Space Cadet, his graphic novel and live show of the same name. Blister packs of the five fragrances were distributed to audience members, designed to coordinate with five specific sections of the show.

ou know what they say: build a better mud mask and the world will beat a path to your door. Consider the case of GlamGlow, founded by the Hollywood-based husband and wife team, Glenn and Shannon Dellimore. Launched roughly four years ago, the brand is on track, they say, to do at least $22 million in 2013, $75 million in 2014, and well into nine figures thereafter. Impressive, no? This is the health and beauty industry we’re talking about, not Silicon Valley. In this industry, such entrepreneurial success stories are a rarity— especially when the entrepreneurs (a.) didn’t plan to invent a product, let alone a brand, and (b.) never devised a marketing plan for their product.

Next, with the help of a chemist, they discovered how to stabilize green tea extract as an active ingredient— which they credit as the “magic” of their formulations today. “We don’t just put the tea leaf in there,” Mr. Dellimore explains. “It’s a very special, very complicated process that no one had ever been able to do before.” Delivered to them in a plain white container, they describe with delight using a Ziploc bag cut at the corner to fill small jars of the first-ever batch to distribute to their bold-faced friends. Days later, the excited celebrities began calling. “Every one of them came back,” Ms. Dellimore says. “Beyoncé

Fun in the Sun Beauty Bash It’s been a dreary summer in North Carolina, with little sun and lots of rain. So the beauty consultants at Macy’s in Crabtree Valley Mall threw a “Fun in the Sun Beauty Bash,” in mid-July, complete with complimentary eyebrow threading, live music, and makeovers. The all-day Saturday beauty party also offered plenty of specials on skin care, makeup, and summer scents. It was the store’s largest cosmetic department event this year, explained Liza Seymour, the store’s new sales manager for cosmetics and fragrances.

Additionally, between sips of Starbucks’ coffee and pastries, women browsed the makeup aisles finding all sorts of goodies including gorgeous summer nail polishes from Clinique including the flirty light-green Hula Skirt and the hot pink Pinkini. At the Lancôme counter, shoppers were mesmerized by the collaboration between Israeli fashion designer Alber Elbaz and Lancôme. The decorative packaging of the limited-edition makeup collections of eye shadow palettes was as pretty as the makeup itself. Sadaf Saeed, the Lancôme manager, said that customers have been slow to shift over to the season’s more intense colors. She attributes it to the gloomy weather. The Triangle area has had a streak of afternoon thunderstorms for almost two weeks straight. Patrons are just now shopping for the more vibrant colors of pink, peach, and coral featured in Lancôme’s “Gloss in Love” line. “It’s been a delayed summer,” said Marianne Hutzler, a sales woman who rotates throughout the cosmetics department. Currently she’s working the Estée Lauder counter, which seems to be drawing in customers interested in a new fragrance, brighter lip sticks, and nail polishes for the season. Hutzler shows them Pleasures Pop, a summer fragrance derived from the original pleasures fragrance from 1995. The fruity and flowery scent is a nice way to brighten up a r a i n y d a y. “This is a way to get them out of the b l a h s ,” s h e stated. BF

Giorgio Armani has opened a flagship counter in Myer in Sydney (the biggest department store group in Australia). It is Myer’s first Giorgio Armani counter in Sydney, with two in the Melbourne region. The block is an impressive 58 square meters with half of the real estate dedicated to Prive, Mr. Armani’s exclusive range of haute couture perfumes. Myer, Melbourne, Chadstone, and now Sydney are the only locations in Australia with such an emphasis on Prive and its luxury discovery service with the new unique bell technique. Michael Marzano, a Giorgio Armani e d u c a t o r, explains how the beauty consultants are trained to introduce the fragrances to customers. “First they are sat down at a black glass table and presented with what looks like a red wine goblet. We ask her what is her fragrance preference—fresh, floral or warm/deep. We then select the Giorgio Armani’s flagship counter in Myer Sydney. three fragrances that we believe are the best fit for her and set them out on our black lacquer tray, each with a bell (glass) in front. We pass the glass under her nose to gain a first impression. We talk about the story and captivate her. Then we spray a card, hand it to the customer with a flourish, ensuring the card was sprayed from at least 20 centimeters so it’s a genuine impression. Following our consultation protocol we solicit a response from the customer, determining which fragrance suits her tastes. People want niche; a lot of people tell us they are looking for something unique—Prive caters for different tastes perfectly—the fragrances draw out personal reminiscences.” The cosmetics area features every item in the company’s collection with makeup application settings as well as sampling dabble bars. By Appointment events will be a feature for the counter to establish it as the luxury go-to for personalized advice and demonstration.

Burt’s Bees has opened its first ever pop up shop in Australia. It’s located on the 5th floor of Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall in Sydney. The brand is stocked in department stores, pharmacies, and health stores across Australia. The purpose of the pop up shop is to build brand awareness. For the 9 months’ duration, which takes in the upcoming holiday season and January sales period, the sales assistants’ role is to recruit customers through introducing them to the heritage of the brand (the real-life Burt and his bees) while demonstrating and sampling the products. Emma Martin, senior brand manager of Burt’s Bees stated, “Not everyone knows there is a real Burt and he is a beekeeper. And as one of Burt’s Bees Pop Up at Westfield Bondi Junction the biggest natural brands in the world we want Australian customers to learn that Burt’s Bees has a full range of natural personal care from head to toe. The pop up environment also allows customer education on Colony Collapse Disorder and what can be done to champion natural environmental issues through Burt’s Bees.” The store has a significant footprint at 3 x 4 metres. The cabinetry is French-polished ash wood, flooring is sea grass matting, and the shelving, cabinets, and backing are in 3-Form Vitamin C. Burt’s Bees’ retail marketing team in U.S. headquarters have designed a ‘store-in-a-box’, which contains all of the designs, fittings, fixtures, and furniture elements for a Burt’s Bees store in physical samples and in soft copy for the designs. This resource not only ensures a consistent look across every store, but helps bring the store look and feel to life at design stage, determining everything from the sea grass flooring, to the French polished ash wood cabinetry, to the amber glass honeydrops hanging from the frame. Each material includes details of the producer in the different parts of the world. “Many of the pieces of furniture came ready-assembled from our head office in the U.S, others like the radiant 3-Form Vitamin C that creates a warm-glow honey hive effect were sourced directly from the supplier in the U.S. and many of the wood and flooring elements were sourced and handcrafted locally to the specifications defined in the store design guide,” Martin added. Brazilian Ingredients Catch the Eye of Cosmetic Giants

Few cosmetic companies are so connected to their birthplace as L’Occitane. The French beauty brand is known worldwide for its intimate relationship with the Provence region, where it was founded in the 1970s. From the ingredients used in L’Occitane’s products to the design of its stores—all elements refer to the bucolic landscapes of southern France. Well, not anymore. In March of this year, L’Occitane launched a new global brand, with products manufactured in Brazil using local ingredients—L’Occitane au Brésil. It is the company’s first project in partnership with another country as well as its first outsourcing experience. The initiative was developed by L’Occitane founder Olivier Baussan together with key executives of the Brazilian subsidiary and the entire international R&D team.

“Almost 40 years ago, we successfully introduced cosmetics made of natural ingredients from the Provence region. Now we want to do the same with the Brazilian biodiversity,” said Benjamin Beaufils, president of L’Occitane au Brésil. The creation of the brand was a challenge by itself, as L’Occitane researchers decided they would only work with ingredients that had never been used before by any cosmetic company. After two years of research throughout different regions of Brazil, the company came up with a list of 40 plants that had the potential to be used in the manufacture of fragrances, and lotions and soaps, including mandacaru and jenipapo. Both ingredients are grown by local farmers in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, while the cosmetics are manufactured in outsourced factories that serve large Brazilian companies such as Natura and O Boticário. Since May, the products have been sold in 89 L’Occitane stores in Brazil, with the company planning to open 90 exclusive stores for the brand in 2014, as well as to expand internationally.

Brazil currently ranks sixth in the company’s global sales, with a humble 5% share. The company currently uses oils and fibers of cupuaçu, murumuru, açai and pracaxi and has started studies on the cosmetic properties of sugarcane bagasse. We are currently searching for species that are more resistant to the sun to be used as natural ingredients in Brazil, India and Asian countries, where the skin and hair are more exposed to heat and direct sunlight,” Pinaud said. The latest data show that L’Oréal invests more than $700 million annually in research and innovation, with over 600 patents registered, and 3,700 experts working in research centers in France, the U.S., India, China, and Japan. Didier Tisserand, president of L’Oréal Brasil, said Brazil has become a key market in the company’s global expansion plans. “In the next 1 5 y e a r s , L’ O r é a l expects to gain 1 billion new customers worldwide and 10% of them should be Brazilians,” he affirmed.
