Sun protection Factor?

In a two-part series Beauty Award Winner Jennifer Rock takes a look at SPF and how to preserve your clients‘ skin.

Fear not, you did pick up the right edition! It is now September/October, and yes, we are about to discuss Sun protection. As skin therapists we understand the importance of protecting our clients' skin against the sun. However, we tend to link the word ‘sun’ with just those few days of heat, good weather, nakedness and the possibility of sunburning! I prefer to call sun protection 'light protection', as indeed it is all forms of light that we need to be aware of - and all year round.

It is imperative that we inform our clients that all year round they are exposed to UVA rays, an age inducing light source. The longest of the three rays (UVA UVB UVC) it beams through hail, rain or shine.

It's also emitted from our laptop screens, overhead lights, it comes through our windows at work, through our car windscreens, the list is endless. In fact, any form of synthetic light or any form of natural light contains UVA rays. As this ray is the longest of its family it ignores the top layer, the epidermis and targets the second layer of the skin; the Dermis.

It is labelled the 'Ageing Ray' as it can alter the DNA of the fibroblast cell (which houses our collagen and elastin). It is considered the 'silent and deadly' ray by many dermatologists as we are blissfully (and ignorantly) unaware of its presence on our skin.

It can take anywhere from 10-40 years for the damage of this ray to be seen on the skin.

Its sister ray, UVB, is a ray that we can feel and see the damage immediately. UVB, remember B is for burning. We need this ray for Vitamin D production in the skin. Unfortunately, we tend to be deficient in this vitamin as this ray is only evident in the Northern Hemisphere between May - September when we feel heat on our skin. So, eh, three weeks of the year then in Ireland? So from SeptemberApril we don't need to worry about UVB rays as we know we will not burn, instead our attention must remain on protecting our skin from UVA rays and fortifying with Vitamin D. In the next installment in this examination of SPF I will look into supplementation and the best product combinations which protect against ageing.

BPI sent an ‘eyebrow-less’ member of the public along to trial Elizabeth Oakes’s eyebrow embroidery.

Elizabeth Oakes is a qualified and experienced Permanent Make-Up Artist with an international client base spanning the US, Middle East, the UK and Ireland. She carries out eyebrow embroidery, permanent lipliner, eyeliner, wrinkle reduction and areola reconstruction for breast cancer patients.

Talking to Elizabeth, who’s extremely personable and professional, it’s clear that her ethos is to always create a natural look – emphasising her clients’ natural features and great care is taken to deliver an attractive end result that adds to the individual’s self-confidence.

Our case study is thirty-something Rachel. Rachel has never had visible eyebrows. For a dark-haired girl it became very obvious when she appeared from under Elizabeth’s deep cleanse with no make-up on. Her brows are thin with fine blonde hairs. Not even dyeing them would really result in any great definition.

Elizabeth took time to chat to both Rachel and I about how the procedure is carried out. She then drew on the outline of the brows, or where Rachel’s brows should be. It wasn’t where I would have expected the line to follow, but when the brows were complete, a 30-minute tattoo process during which natural eyebrows are recreated beautifully, the line was spot on. It was bound to hurt, but Rachel’s pain threshold seemed to be quite high.

The result was perfect; finally after more than thirty years Rachel had eyebrows and beautiful, exquisitely matched ones (as pictured in the before and after on the right).

Elizabeth is a member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP), and, at present, is one of the only Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professionals living in Ireland.

She has extensive training in all disciplines of Permanent Make-Up Artistry and carries out comprehensive training programmes.

Elizabeth has a great eye for detail and a steady hand – trademarks that have made her a world leader within the industry.

The Seoid Way

BPI’s Lucy Earley checked out the Seoid Spa in Dunboyne Castle Hotel for a bit of extreme pampering!

Dunboyne Castle Hotel has a beautifully manicured driveway leading up the 18th Century/modern hybrid exterior. We received a warm welcome at reception, and we easily found our room. It was luxurious, spacious and well laid-out, and we had a lovely view of the parkland surrounding the hotel.

I start most reviews by moaning about how stressed out I was beforehand, and how relaxed I was after. It was no different this time, I really needed to wind down and get a good massage! The Seoid Spa starts on the ground floor underneath the hotel. It’s a large spa, spanning over three floors of treatment rooms and amenities.

Walking through the candlelit corridors we were hit with a fabulous smell of bergamot and spices. The olfactory beacons for relaxation.

We started our spa voyage with the Sabbia Med experience. It’s a room dedicated to forgetting you’re in Ireland (which I have no problem doing), and luxuriating in bone-warming heat and rays of light.

We lay on the sand and soaked it all in. Closing your eyes, you could believe that you were on a beach in the Med. I suppose we’ve had a little bit of a summer, but it would definitely be something I would do again, in the depths of a SAD-induced Irish winter.

We had Ana and Anne as our therapists for the day. My therapist, Anne started with a glorious, hourlong full body massage. The pressure was firm, just what I needed! She followed the massage with a fullbody scrub, using Seoid’s own sugar and salt scrub.

After showering, Anne then applied the most gorgeous melting body balm I’ve ever experienced.

It was actually Seoid’s homemade body butter. They should seriously market this stuff, it smells good enough to eat, and my skin felt amazing afterwards. The

pampering continued as Anne carried out a Voya facial.

Voya seems to be a brand that is popping up in luxe spas throughout Ireland and internationally. It’s great to see an Irish, family-owned brand doing so well.

After carrying out the facial, a gentle mix of cleansing, toning and masque application, she used a different brand of eyecream on my eye area. For some reason, I reacted to the Voya eyecream when I sampled it a few months ago – but it was no problem, the Seoid Spa also use Image, which is a cosmaceutical brand, and one that’s also excellent in my estimation.

The Image eyecream definitely made a difference to the dark circles around my eyes.

Meanwhile, my companion, who has a bad back, was given a comprehensive and careful massage by Ana. The massage was so effective – she didn’t have to use painkillers or Difene gel (a daily necessity) for four days after! So these therapists really know their stuff! She was also delighted with her facial, and I noticed that her skin was lifted and looked very bright afterwards.

We then decided to sample the thermal features of the spa. We spent some time luxuriating in the laconium, a room where the heat is embedded in the walls and benches. That was a lovely feeling – heat creeping into your skin.

After a short stint in the steamroom and sauna, we showered and popped in for a swim in the thermal swimming pool, which is the main feature in the centre of the spa. We spent some time in the infra-red jacuzzi areas of the pool, triggering them with our presence, and getting some nice ‘acqua’ massages.

Seoid means ‘jewel’ or ‘gem’ in Irish, and this is definitely a gem of a spa and hotel, with the added bonus of friendly and knowledgeable staff.

The annual Professional Beauty Show Dublin is a specialised industry event which serves the beauty, spa and wellness industries in Ireland. It takes place this October at the RDS, bringing together key professional brands to thousands of visitors coming to see the latest market trends.

Always a lover of art, Sinead Faulkner was inspired to enter the make-up industry, after she had her make-up done for a wedding and got chatting to Emma Woods, the proprietor of Avant Garde.

Sinead also trained with Jeff Swan, one of Americas top SFX artists, and has a resulting passion for special effects; you can see her ‘creepy’ work showcased here, in time for a bit of Halloween shaking up!

She is finding the experience of being a professional make-up artist very rewarding, especially photoshoots. One of her favorite artists is the wellknown Alex Box, whose work she used to inspire a recent shoot.

Having Compassion Peninsula Business Services looks at the area of bereavement or compassionate leave.

There are several types of discretionary leave.

Here we examine a sombre fact of life bereavement or compassionate leave. This occurs under unfortunate circumstances where time off is given due to the death of a close family member or friend.

As mentioned, this is a discretionary leave, and although there is no statutory obligation to do so, this is one of the areas where a company is likely to grant limited paid time-off to an employee.

Any leave the employee will be entitled to will generally depend on what is set out in their Contract of Employment or Employee Handbook. However, leave can also be determined by what is deemed to be custom and practice within the company.

The amount of leave granted may vary from company to company and will, for the most part, depend on the closeness of the deceased relative. Special consideration is usually given to the particular circumstances of the situation.

For bereavement leave, up to three days paid leave for the death of close family members is common, although some organisations may provide five days on a discretionary basis.

A close family member is usually defined as a spouse or civil partner, daughter, son, parent, sister or brother and may include grandparents or in-laws. In the event of death of grandparents, in-laws, an aunt or uncle - one

day may be granted.

However, custom and practice will also need to be followed. If employees have been given additional paid time off for bereavement in the past, it will be considered unfair not to give this time-off to another employee, so the policy the company has in place on Bereavement Leave should be applied consistently.

It is prudent to have a detailed policy if the company does differentiate between the number of days provides, and these details should be clearly stated in the policy.

AIRBASE TRAINING Professional airbrush make-up range Airbase is launching their college course in Ireland for the first time.

The course which has run successfully in the UK for the past four years where it is approved by Habia and VTCT is also recognised by AIT for insurance purposes.

Designed for students of all levels the Half Day and more comprehensive Full Day course provide the perfect introduction to the increasingly popular world of airbrush make-up.

Incorporating theory on the use and application of silicone based airbrush make-up, the students study a demonstration and then take the airbrush in hand for a practical session.
