BPI EDITOR NOMINATED The Editor of Beauty Professional Ireland, Lucy Earley, has been nominated in the prestigious Irish Magazine Awards 2013, in the category of ‘Editor of the Year – Business to Business’. New Year… New You! While we’re all on a Christmas ‘buzz’, beauty expert Bronwyn Conroy reminds us to start your client’s New Year on the right footing, with some New Year beauty resolutions: As Christmas is the busiest time of the year in the salon, it is a good idea to give clients a list of beauty resolutions for the New Year, to encourage them to start 2014 with the best of intentions. To entice people in the door in the quieter months of January and February, show them you care by giving out flyers with some beauty resolution tips (below) for the New Year, along with some special promotions. Beauty Resolutions: V Detox make-up bags; most make- up bags are a breeding ground for bacteria. Brushes and sponges should be washes regularly in warm soapy water. Pop make-up bags in the washing machine and discard any old bits of make-up that you no longer use. V Commit to cleansing your face properly twice a day. In the morning use a gentle foaming wash to cleanse the skin of sebum secreted during the night, and in the evening follow your three-step cleanse, tone and moisturise to fully remove make-up and hydrate the skin. V SPF should be used all year round, if you’re not doing this already - start the New Year using a minimum of SPF30 daily. V Body-brush daily before your morning shower to detoxify impurities, boost circulation and break down cellulite. Use a natural bristle brush starting at the feet and working up towards the heart. This is a very effective treatment when done for two minutes daily that doesn’t cost the earth. V Update your make-up; most women have been applying their make-up the same way for years. Get out of a make-up rut by getting a professional makeover and picking up some new product ideas and tips. V Increase your water intake to 2.5 litres a day. Water is essential to flush out toxins and keep the skin looking supple and healthy. 16•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Forty-five to seventy per cent of a person’s total body weight is made up of water so it is vital to keep fluid levels topped up. At least one of your skincare products should be glycolic based to promote a more uniform skin appearance and to ease fine lines, breakouts and dark spots. Care for your cuticles, applying cuticle oil is the last thing on a busy woman’s mind but massaging cuticle oil into the cuticles and nails increases the circulation to the area, promoting healthy growth and preventing dry, brittle nails. From Office To Dancefloor Celebrity Make-up Artist, Ken Boylan, shows you how to get clients festive ready in a very short time!

If you want to go from this … to this in a few very easy steps, please read on! So, your client has been working late on the big night of the year - the staff party! Here are four things you can do as an MUA to bring your client’s day make-up to a fabulous Christmas night look! A night out that could be a late one needs a long-lasting foundation. My award-winning cream-to-powder foundation (E28.00) works for this. I find cream foundations are great for touch-ups too. I always apply it with a foundation brush. With a good black pencil eyeliner, line the inner rim of the eye. This brings a day look to a foxy night look, and if you pat over it with a black eye shadow, it will stay all night. My black eyeliner in onyx (E15.00) and eye shadow in tar (E12.50) are great for this. Add a bit of bling. I mean use a face highlighter - not apply jewels! They come in many types, liquid, powder and cream. I find the cream the easiest one to apply. Use your fingers or a blush brush to apply it to your cheeks and bridge of the nose to give a shine. The strobe lights in the nightclub would be proud! My face highlight in ‘Afterglow’ is perfect (E20.00). Finally, change your lip colour from your day neutrals to your night pinks. Or, if you’re brave enough try a pillar-box red. I would always use a lip pencil before the lipstick, as it will stop it from bleeding. 22•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Apply this all over the lips and blend it in. Then put a generous amount of lipstick over the pencil and blot with a tissue - this will keep the lipstick off your teeth. You can add lip-gloss to this if you want to, but I like to just keep it to the lip liner and lipstick; we have tonnes of colours in the shop. One of my favourites is Veronica L (E20.00). Amazeballs! Party Ready Celebrity Hair Stylist Dylan Bradshaw tells us how to do the classic Xmas up-do quick and easily 1. Up-styles can be done in three or four sections – Don’t make things too complicated for yourself! It’s simple, classy and very flattering to most face shapes. 2. Section 1 – Make a ponytail by sectioning the hair from just below the crown of the hair and behind the ear on both sides. You will now have your top sections loose. While the bottom of the hair is in place. 3. Section 2 & 3 are created when using the natural parting of the hair, or sometimes I move the parting slightly lower in order to create a more dramatic look. Now that your parting is in place these will be you sections 2 & 3. 4. Backcomb section 2 (the side on which your parting sits) from root to tip and then brush out softly using the Shu Uemuru Anti-Static brush. Place this section beside the pony tail in which you have already created and secure in place with a pin. Repeat this step for section 3. So when you have completed this part both sides of the parting will be placed and secured beside the ponytail. 5. To finish this look simply back-comb the entire ponytail and additional side pieces from root to tip, again smooth out using the paddle brush and place this in a circle around the base of the pony tail. You can braid this - be inventive! Always finish with a mist of L’Oreal Professional Infinium Hairspray for the ultimate hold!

The Festive Party Penisula Business Services examines the pitfalls of the Christmas party - what should be a festive time of the year, but can sometimes be a nightmare. The Christmas party, a place to blow off steam and let your hair down. However, when alcohol is involved it is also possible that inappropriate behaviour will occur such as insulting conduct, unwanted sexual advances, etc. There have been several cases in recent years which have found that an employer can be liable for employee actions at work-related social events. Discrimination by employees The most common risk for employers is discrimination, as employees may engage in some discriminatory act towards another employee. In one such case, an employee was awarded �5,000 after he was verbally abused at a Christmas Party for being a Member of the Travelling Community. In another case, a woman was awarded �12,000 after she was sexually harassed (an act of gender discrimination) at a Christmas Party by her General Manager. Key concerns in these cases were that: (a) the employers did not investigate the employees’ respective complaints, and (b) the employers did not have a policy as to how employees were to conduct themselves at the social events. Discrimination by third parties Employers should also be wary of third party discrimination. An employee was awarded �21,000 in one case where she was sexually harassed by a third party at her place of work by a person who didn’t work for the employer. The nature of her work brought the employee into regular contact with this individual. Therefore, it was her work that led to this discriminatory behaviour. Despite the fact that these incidences took place outside of work and in a separate venue, the crucial issue, in each case, was that the employer did not investigate the employee’s complaints. Taking Pre-emptive Action Make sure that you have a clear contract of employment and employee handbook and that these documents contain clear policies on bullying, harassment, email and internet use and disciplinary procedures. employee is issued with a copy. Issue a memo to all staff in advance of the event and explain that as the event is work-related, it will be subject to company rules and procedures. Make sure that they are aware of the implications of subjecting the company to ridicule and the personal violation impact of uploading photos to social networks without other employees’ permission. Steps that can be taken: V Ensure that your staff members are aware that they may be subject to disciplinary action for unacceptable behaviour. V Remind staff to drink alcohol responsibly. V Is the venue suitable? Ensure that the venue is safe from a health and safety perspective, bearing in mind its suitability for any disabled employee. V Managers are advised to steer clear of inappropriate discussions about careers and salary increases. V Appoint a designated person to take civilised photos at the work related event. V Coach managers on how to respond to any unwanted conduct that may occur at the event. V If any inappropriate behaviour occurs, take swift investigative action upon the resumption of work, especially where an employee has made a complaint, drawing reference to the company policies and guidelines. The Right Way Beauty Business Expert Liz McKeon asks the question: how do you deal with genuine customer complaints? Do you want a client who has a genuine complaint to become a long-term lifetime client, or the ruination of your business and your career? Even in the best run salons and spas accidents happen, treatments go wrong. Do you have your team trained and the systems in place to effectively deal with that dreaded genuine complaint? Every salon has to deal with situations in which things go wrong from a client’s point of view. How you respond, when this happens, is the difference between having a nasty court case looming over you (and your reputation damaged), or retaining that client for life, adding to the bottom line of your business. Complaints must be handled courteously, sympathetically and swiftly. Make sure that your salon has an established procedure for dealing with client complaints and that it is known to all your staff: receptionists, therapists, juniors and part-timers. Notify your insurance broker, by phone immediately. Document the incident in writing for your broker, which will be sent to the insurance company, who will then send you claims forms for completion. Tactics for dealing with the complaining client – the injured party: 1. Empathy - Understand that before you contact the complaining client, you can’t “win”. Complaints are really just degrees of losing. Put yourself in the client’s shoes, so that you can get a better understanding of their perspective. Reassure them that you care, understand and are listening to them, by allowing them to explain their situation. 2. Respect - Staying calm sends a message that you have respect for them, and it can be difficult to do this when an angry client is yelling at you. Remember their anger is not about you, they are upset about their situation and are taking it out on you. 44•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

3. Apologise - Apologise for the inconvenience/ upset/time wasted, etc. rather than apologising for what has happened, especially if what actually happened is in dispute. Offering an apology, regardless of how you feel or what you can do about the situation, will alleviate some of the stress the client is feeling. 4. Take responsibility - If the mistake has been made by a member of your staff, take full responsibility and assist the client so that their problem is solved. 5. Insurance - Under no circumstances should you EVER open your salon doors to a client without insurance in place. You pay for insurance to give you peace of mind. In the event of a complaint ending up in court, with the right insurance cover in place, you avoid having to pay out, as this is what you’re paying your premium for. Running a beauty business without insurance, whether it’s mobile, home or salon based is nothing short of business suicide! If you’re looking for decent premiums, then check out the myriad of providers that specialise in affordable cover for mobile therapists and salons. 6. Settlement - The hard part is the settlement of the complaint, and you will have to do some work here. The degree of loss is up to you. Most likely, you will end up giving away products, treatments, full refunds or whatever it takes. You owe it to yourself and your salon to salvage some type of relationship. Agree on an equitable solution, then you may still have that client for life, that adds to the bottom line in your business and most importantly, saves your salon’s reputation. The choice is yours – equip your staff with the right procedures necessary to handle upset clients, arriving at positive solutions with satisfied clients who are happy to return because of the way their problem was handled, or wait for the dreaded claim against your salon to arrive in the post.

Over the past three or four years a new name has appeared in the professional make-up world and with it, a new method of applying make-up. New Beauty College for TWA Waverley Academy has expanded again with a new college in Enfield Co Meath. The college will keep its current name of Trinity Beauty College and will offer a range of ITEC and short courses, including beauty therapy, make-up, massage, eyelashes, nails, advanced make-up and teacher training. It has already made a big impact in the Midlands area under the guidance of former Waverley trainer Lisa Carey who completed her teacher education at TWA several years ago. AT IBHT 2013 GRADUATION, IBHT Reflexology Graduate Ciara Byrne (above) was awarded the prestigious VTCT Excellence Award at the 2013 IBHT Graduation Ceremony on Sunday 13th October at Killashee House Hotel. The excellence award is rare and awarded to only outstanding graduates with excellent dedication, knowledge, skill, customer service, client care and technical ability. The IBHT Graduates were conferred by Dr. Stephen Vickers, Chief Executive VTCT & Corina Fagan, Qualifications Development Officer at VTCT. Many Graduates are going into fulltime and part-time employment, while others with entrepreneurial drive are ‘doing it for themselves’ and setting up their own businesses. Dr. Stephen Vickers also noted that ‘many Graduates in this industry of hair, beauty and health go on to provide employment in their local areas, paying taxes and boosting local economy’. Corina Fagan spoke of the European Standard for Beauty Salon Services, which will be launched in 2015. This standard outlines that only Salons who employ beauty therapists with qualifications which map to the EQF will be eligible to apply for certifications to the European Standard. All IBHT Graduates with VTCT qualifications are going into the industry with a premium qualification, which is recognised nationally and internationally, and maps to the EQF. Sheen Falls Bliss BPI’s Editor Lucy Earley spent two blissful days in Sheen Falls recently…

The elevated lawn leading up to the Sheen Falls Lodge Hotel, a luxury five star outside Kenmare warmly invites you in. There are six other accommodation options as well as the hotel, including beautiful thatched cottages and villas. On our arrival we were greeted by their friendly manager in the beautiful foyer area. We were then led through the wide and elegant corridors to the newly renovated Sheen Falls Signature Suite within the hotel, which would be our quarters for the next two days. It felt like we had been given half the ‘West Wing’, it was so large and luxurious. Like many scenically located house hotels in Ireland, Sheen Falls Lodge literally started out as a hunting and fishing lodge for the landed gentry, under different Baronets. It was re-opened in 1991 as a five star hotel, retaining 18th Century inspired features from its origins. It was late, and we were tired, but it didn’t stop us from heading into Kenmare, courtesy of the Sheen Falls complimentary mini-bus, to catch some live music in the local pubs. Later, back in the candlelit residents’ bar we enjoyed a nightcap. After the best night’s sleep – in what seemed like months, we headed down to breakfast, which is held in the main restaurant, La Cascade. The restaurant overlooks the hotel’s namesake, the Sheen Falls. The sun shone in warmly on us as we indulged in a small cooked Irish breakfast each, amazing coffee and pastries. Wheat avoidance goes out the window when I’m on my holidays! The Spa We headed down to the Sheen Falls Spa later on that morning. The treatment rooms in the beautifully laidout leisure area are havens of peace. We both opted for hour-long deep-tissue massages. Mags, my knowledgble and friendly therapist carried out my massage using rich and beautifully scented Voya oils. She went as deep as I 52•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

needed and used muscle empowering techniques, which made me feel re-strengthened, as well as deeply relaxed. My companion also enjoyed his massage; he needed the deeper tissue work his equally lovely therapist, Stephanie, carried out as he has some neck issues. Fully de-tensed; we luxuriated in the sauna, steamroom, jacuzzi and finally, the pool before we went for an afternoon jaunt out over Moll’s Gap and into Killarney. The Food We were warmly greeted at the two AA Rosette awarded La Cascade for dinner that evening. Our sommelier showed us through our wine choices, and the waiting staff were attentive, but not obtrusive We spent the rest of the evening in a kind of haze of delighted reminiscence of what we had just eaten, soaking up the candle-lit luxury of the front rooms, bar and foyer. I can’t fault Sheen Falls on anything - fabulous food, excellent spa treatments and above all the service is friendly and thorough. They’re gearing up for the Christmas season and it’s well worth a look at for a yuletide escape, with excellent value included in the prices. And, believe me, it’s worth every penny - you will be very well looked after!

We take a look back at what was the best beauty shows this year! Professional Beauty Dublin 2013 was held at the RDS, Dublin on the 6th to the 7th of October. The show welcomed 8,563 (subject to ABC audit) beauty professionals, confirming its status as the must-attend event in Ireland. The show was packed with big names such as Dermalogica, Decléor, Payot, CND, just to name but a few, an extensive seminar programme, live demonstrations and two fantastic competitions. Over 100 brands from every corner of the industry including: skincare, nails, make-up, tanning and beauty supplies chose Professional Beauty Dublin as the site for their new launches. Both exhibitors and visitors declared the event a success. Visitors were wowed with the variety of products on offer, while the steady numbers through the doors impressed exhibitors. “We had a great show, a lot of new customers for our Lipo Firm + machine, and we opened a very good amount of new accounts for our brands Decleor and Payot,” commented Graham Quinn, Owner of Graham Anthony. Sam Willis, Marketing Co-Coordinator at Dermalogica, said: “Professional Beauty Dublin enabled us to make new connections with students and business owners and networks with our existing accounts.” Developing skills Professional Beauty Dublin is more than just an exhibition.
