ENTERPRISE IRELAND LAUNCHES FIRST ONLINE NETWORKING PLATFORM FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS The Minister of State for Small Business, Mr John Perry TD recently launched Enterprise Ireland‘s first peer-to-peer online networking platform for female-led companies. The new online initiative will support female entrepreneurs by facilitating greater communication and connectivity between the growing number of female entrepreneurs supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland, helping them to exploit opportunities to grow their businesses in Ireland and in international markets.

The launch of this initiative coincides with the announcement that Enterprise Ireland will invest €600,000 in 12 female-led businesses as part of the Competitive Start Fund for Female Entrepreneurs. The successful applicants span a variety of sectors including Consumer Products, Enterprise Software, Medical Devices, E-Health, Online Applications and Internationally Traded Services.

UNFAIR RATES LAW TO CHANGE An archaic, pre-famine law (1838) in relation to rates is set to change this year. The current law provides that businesses moving into a new premises can be liable for up to two years of the previous tenant’s unpaid rates. The amendment to the law has been approved by TDs and is to be signed into law by the President shortly. The amended law will mean that new tenants will be able to move into a new property without being forced to pay for a predecessor’s unpaid rates. The move should free up the retail economy as well as giving the commercial property sector a boost.

FRAGILE GROWTH MUST BE PROTECTED That’s according to ISME, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association, who welcomed the fact that CSO Live Register figures show that unemployment has decreased slightly in January. In order to continue the slight growth in the economy they have called for wage rates to be held in the battle for competitiveness.

What was it like in the run up to the launch of the Dawson Spa? It must have been fairly hectic?

It was extremely busy! But it was very exciting and rewarding seeing it all come together. From the new décor, training in the organic VOYA product range, and the fantastic feedback from guests on the night; I couldn’t have been happier with it.

Where did you train originally?

What are your favourite beauty product ranges?

I have tried and tested so many products after being in the industry for the last nine years, and the products I find to work best for my skin are Dr Murad AHA/ BHA exfoliating cleanser, along with their soothing skin and lip therapy, which is a lifesaver in winter months for dry or chapped lips. I have also used VOYA for the last two years and love it, I knew it was the right product range to take on board for The Dawson Spa. My Little Hero and Maskerade are my absolute must haves and I have converted both of my sisters and friends. Elemis Milk Bath is also one of my favourite body products, it can be used in the bath and I also use it as a body lotion. It’s hydrating and smells amazing too.

‘BRF’ Solutions Award-winning skincare expert JENNIFER ROCK looks at the phenomenon of ‘Bitchy Resting Face’ (BRF) In case you weren’t already familiar with the term, BRF (or its cousin ‘Sad Face’) is a chronic ‘condition’ affecting the facial muscles of women (and men), resulting in the face appearing hostile and judgemental when at rest. BRF is not necessarily a direct reflection of the individual’s mood or indeed their current thought process. In fact it is an unfortunate aesthetic muscular ‘condition’, which needs to be treated before it affects friendships, work relationships and more!

The most credible and long-term skin health angle is to ’address, stimulate and restore our clients’ collagen and elastin proteins. These are naturally found deep within the connective tissue of the dermal layer of the skin. As a result, they tend not to be the easiest of bodies to energise. Due to their resistance to exert themselves, one must depend on a more results driven method to target such a deep layer within the skin.

Microneedling is the obvious solution! It’s a procedure performed by some companies for approximately seventeen or so years. Yet, Microneedling has only recently experienced the benefits of social media and so has become quite popular of late.

It’s quite simply the use of a hand held nonmotorised implement with short needles which are then used to cause temporary micro trauma to the skin with a view to targeting the dermis.

This is deemed the active living layer of the skin, an area where topical lotions and potions cannot reach and so cannot give us real results on the fibroblast (collagen

and elastin) cell. The main culprit in Bitchy Resting Face!

Microneedling’s goal is to cause long-term skin health. Collagen retires at the chronological age of 25; while elastin is impossible to stimulate with topical products so we shall depend on Microneedling to re-educate and ‘shock’ these lazy proteins into shape. The results take time to shine through as the collagen and elastin network relay themselves.

If someone is conscious of frown lines, ageing, slackening, lax skin then this treatment is the ultimate answer.

The goal for a therapist when performing this aesthetic treatment is to pin prick the skin with droplets of blood as the blood brings with it certain growth factors which, in turn, are responsible for what is described as scarless healing collagen and elastin. This cannot be achieved with other treatments, Some companies inject peptides and vitamins into the dermis to really prevent that furrowing frown. So for all the bitchy resting face folk, be prepared to appear smiley friendly and approachable in the future.

Irish Nails

La Bella Sposa Nail Guru Caroline Carrick shows you how to recreate an intricate gel design that's perfect for weddings. She uses Astonishing Nails products.

You will need to prepare your tips by first buffing with a 180 buffer.

Using your gel brush No. 6, coat the tip in a layer of Cover Pink Builder Gel and cure for 3 minutes.

Repeat this step two more times to ensure good and complete coverage.

Using a small metal spatula place a medium bead of Arctic White, Ultra White and White Colour Gel onto a palette.

Blend these together until the consistency is such that you can paint fine lines. The Arctic White gives a more definite white pigment and will stop the other whites from levelling too quickly.

With a fine brush, such as the Micro Styler, draw in a smile line at the cuticle end of your nail about ¼ of the way down, bringing one of the outer corners down further than the other. Again, if you’re working on a set of nails make sure to do the opposite on the other hand.

Fill the void at the upper corner with your white mix and your No. 6 brush. Flash cure for 30 seconds, this will freeze the upper layer of the gel, allowing you to continue.

Using the same techniques, cover the tip at a diagonally curved angle.

Cure the tip for 4 minutes to ensure the arctic white has had sufficient time to cure.

Coat these areas two more times and fully cure to

ensure an even colouration.

Now using your micro styler and the white mix begin painting swirls along the ‘smile lines’ of your nail and flash cure in between to hold your shapes until you are ready to fully cure.

Once you are happy with your design you can go ahead and cap it with Clear Builder gel and create your structure, curing for 3 minutes.

Once cured, clean off your tacky layer using UV Cleanse and refine the shape of your nail using file graduation.

Once your desired shape has been achieved, buff over the surface with a 180 buffer to allow your paint to flow.

Now you can begin your lace. Place some Astonishing Paint in Black on a small palette, add some water to the paint so that you get some very fine lines. Thick paint will not move the way you want it to. It is also very important to keep cleaning your brush as paint will build up and dry in the bristles and won’t move as you want it to.

Using your Micro styler ‘0000’ draw two thin lines that run parallel to each other along the ‘smile lines’ of your design. These can be slightly thicker than the lines you will create later. Using your Pro Dotting tool with the smallest head place small dots at intervals between these lines.

Then begin the crosshatch design of your lace using very fine lines.

You should keep your pressure very light where you want thinness and a little heavier where you want thickness. Use the small dots as a guide for placement and spacing.

When these are complete you will need to start the lace edge. Draw some extremely thin semi-circles along the length of the ‘smile lines’. Then draw another smaller semi-circle just inside those.

Then, again using your smallest dotting tool, begin to add some tiny dot details that will give your lace its finished appearance.

When you are satisfied with your lace design

and it has dried, you can now seal your nail by painting on a layer of No Cleanse Top Seal and curing for 4 minutes, to ensure maximum shine.

I also added some silver glitter using a glitter striper to the top of my swirls and sealed again with No Cleanse Top Seal.

“Becoming a make-up artist was always my dream. After studying Fashion Design and Event Management at University I studied Beauty Therapy at evening college, and then qualified as a Make-up Artist in 2010 having studied in Belfast and London.

I started my first business in 2003, a face painting company called Crazy Faces. In 2010 following my make-up qualification, I rebranded the company to s.a.k.DESIGNS. We specialise in make-up artistry, face and body painting and have a team of children’s entertainers.

I’m proud to have become an established bridal make-up artist in NI and love the buzz and excitement of working in the bridal industry. I have also established myself as the leading face painting training provider in Northern Ireland promoting high standards and safe practise in the industry, something I am so passionate about, and in 2008 I brought the art of baby bump painting to the province.

I love how versatile my job is; working with brides one day, TV presenters the next, teaching ladies how to apply their make-up and working on photoshoots.

I also volunteer with the amazing charity Look Good Feel Better. Hard work and dedication is key in this industry. I have been lucky to have had such amazing opportunities in my career so far like assisting a top London make-up artist at the MTV EMAs in Belfast, coming third in Illamasqua’s Distinction in MakeUp Artistry awards in 2011, meeting my idol Alex Box, winning Irish Make-Up Artist of the Year at Professional Beauty in Dublin 2012 and most recently winning Best Bridal Make-Up Artist voted by the readers of Getting Married in NI magazine.”

To The Top Liz Mckeon on her top 10 tips to salon sales success Business has been more than a little scary and every salon owner is hoping for a brighter economic environment.

To build up the client relationship is very important because most people can make a sale to the customer, as long as the customer has interest in the product or service. What makes the sales person stand out is the sales made to the client who is random or not particularly interested in spending.

The therapist who can build up the relationship with them and make them come back again, over and over, is not just a great therapist, but also a brilliant sales person. Here are the top ten tips for effective sales and business development:

1.

Know your services and retail products.

This sounds obvious and straight forward, but unfortunately, there are far too many therapists who are trying to sell without having a high degree of product knowledge. Your staff must know what you’re selling from top to bottom of your price list, and be confident in explaining the features and benefits of every retail product on your shelves.

2.

Know your target market. Knowing who to sell your product or services to is just as important as knowing what you are selling.

Therapists need sales training to pinpoint who it is that buys what you’re selling and target them specifically. This is especially true during an economic slowdown when you might not have as much to spend on advertising, marketing and prospecting.

3.

Know your competition and competitive advantage. Your competition is always there, but they’re bound to be more ruthless when there are fewer clients. Figure out what makes your salon different from theirs and how you stand apart. Evaluate obvious advantages, like costs, features, quality, location and reputation.

4.

Be a pro-active salon developer. Now is not the time to wait for your phone to ring.

Make your own opportunities by networking, advertising, making calls and at times, pounding the pavements. Remember, the more you reach out, the more you’ll get in return.

Work your existing client database.

Never underestimate the value of your existing clients. When business is slow, use the opportunity to call your ‘regulars’ to inform them of new services, promotions, special offers and discounts.

Track progress and results, without this you will never know what works and what doesn’t. There are plenty of easyto-use ‘customer relationship management’ (CRM) software programmes available to help monitor sales efforts from start to finish. Think obsessively about how your clients perceive you and your business. Focus on the three ‘whats’: What you are presenting, what you are saying/ communicating and what you are delivering to your all important clients.

Learn from your sales mistakes. Are you having difficulty with a certain market segment or do you keep hammering away at a few clients who aren’t interested in buying from you? You can’t win them all, just learn from these mistakes and move on, quickly.

Be persistent. The old adage, ‘sales is a numbers game’ is true, especially when business is slow. Persistence is one of those traits that are common among all successful sales people. A ‘don’t give up’ mindset is truly one of the most valuable attributes that you and your staff can adopt. Always Right?

Salon/Spa Expert Bronwyn Conroy examines how to deal with difficult customers.

Anybody who deals with the public daily will have experienced a difficult situation from time-to-time. In a salon environment clients who are unhappy with a treatment will sometimes take a reaction to a treatment or perhaps arrive so late they do not get to have their treatment! So, if a client becomes irate what’s the best way to handle it?

Firstly, take a deep breath and “handle the situation”. It is imperative that you maintain your professionalism at all times and work towards a solution. No matter what - never get cross, no matter how tempting it might be!

Listen to the issues that the client has, never cut across them as they are speaking, this will only escalate the situation. Let them finish.

Empathise and explain that you understand their frustration and that it is a valid complaint, this will help to diffuse the situation, everybody likes to be listened to.

Remind the client that you want to solve the problem and that you value her custom. Never allow anybody to use inappropriate language, if they cannot maintain enough control to conduct a reasonable conversation, then it’s time to switch strategies and terminate the conversation.

If you’re not the manager explain that you don’t have the authority to deal with the complaint; take the clients details and always follow up on it. If somebody is becoming 52•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

abusive call in the most senior person present to help diffuse the situation.

Always remind the client that you are there to help, that you value their custom and discuss a solution in a reasonable manner. It is important to let them know that they are valued and that you want them to be happy with the service you are providing. Bad reviews travel much faster than good reviews unfortunately so it is essential to turn the situation around so that you do not lose a customer.

The UnderPerformer Penisula Business Services tells us the top 10 tips to turn around an under-performing worker.

There is very little in one’s business life that is as infuriating as an under-performing employee.

Some employees may genuinely be making an effort but are just not hitting the standard whereas other employees may be more than capable but may not be as bothered when it comes to their targets. The following tips should assist any employer in dealing with such issues.

1. Know what you want from the employee To be able to identify that an employee is underperforming, you should be fully aware of what you want from them. It is also necessary that the employee is aware of the required standards.

2. Informality When you are addressing a performance issue for the first time, it is advisable to approach it with informal measures. This does not mean that the issue goes unaddressed; it simply means that no formal sanctions will be given out at this stage.

3. Let the individual know that you have concerns The first practical step is to let the employee know that you have concerns over their performance. This should be done in a private conversation with the employee, but is not a formal hearing so there is no need to formally invite the employee with notice.

4. Identify the problem Enquiries should be made as to the reason for the underperformance. This is necessary to establish what subsequent action you need to take. If they have the capacity to perform better but simply choose not to, then they should be told that they must improve. If it is their ability to do the job (they are trying hard but still can’t perform well) that is the problem, then you should identify how you can help them e.g. further training/supervision. If the reason is medical, it may be necessary to obtain expert medical opinion. If they have a disability, reasonable adjustments should be made to the role so that their disability is not a barrier to their performance.

5. Notify of the consequences Although you are dealing with the issue informally, you should let the employee know that, should they show no signs of improvement, you may 54•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

need to begin a formal procedure with them.

6. Monitor properly Keep tabs on the employee’s subsequent performance. Make daily checks if that is appropriate, but it is best to do this during the monitoring period, rather than simply at the end, so interim measures can be taken if necessary.

7. Re-visit If the employee does not improve, or there is a temporary improvement followed by a dip, you must re-visit the issue. Speak to the employee again, pointing out that your previous discussion, and/ or any help provided, does not appear to have had an effect. Again ascertain what the reasons are.

8. Formal procedure If no sufficient improvement or explanation is provided, you should consider implementing a formal disciplinary or capability procedure with the employee. This can follow the same process as the informal procedure, however, formal hearings should be held where the employee is permitted to respond to the concerns you have. Employees should be formally invited to these hearings, allowed the right to be accompanied, and formal sanctions e.g. warnings, may be given where appropriate.

9. Efficiency is key In more general terms, you should deal with the process efficiently – do not allow the issue to drag on. Where you set timescales, stick to them.

10. Consistency Act in accordance with previous cases of a similar nature to ensure a consistent approach in terms of assistance provided, where appropriate, and sanctions given.

In addition to these tips, you need to remember to communicate clearly with each employee. Ensure the employee is clear on the objectives they have been set and on the consequences of their actions.

Ellen Meets

Vanity Matters Waxpert guru and new contributor Ellen Kavanagh caught up with Jennifer Butler and Jennifer O’Brien of the very successful Vanity Rooms salon in Stepaside, Co. Dublin, and found out how they have built up their incredible reputation so far.

So how did you both begin in the beauty industry?

Well Jennifer (Butler) always had a passion for beauty and started with a company called ‘Nailcare Company’ in Blackrock/Switzers. She worked in their branch in Switzers almost twenty years ago. She then set up Elegance Nail Salon when she was 22 years-old in Foxrock Village, where she was for 10 years.

Jennifer (O’Brien) studied Beauty Therapy in Dun Laoire Senior College back in 1995. Straight from there she concentrated on nails, and after working for Jennifer Butler in Elegance for two years, set up ‘Perfect 10 Nails’ also when she was 22 in a hair salon in Cabinteely where she was for six years.

Vanity Rooms just turned 5! Can you think back to that opening period, what was it like?

We had some small teething problems back then with pedicure chairs and plumbing. But everything just fell into place. We had spent a year setting up our business so were very organised and prepared. So we were bursting with pride when we opened our doors and had a huge opening party with a packed house of all our loyal clients who followed us everywhere over the years!

Did you get any help or loans to start the business?

We got a business loan from Bank of Ireland in Celbridge to help set up.

What advice would you give yourselves looking back?

It would be to do less treatments ourselves and focus more on the business end of things. We both have a huge clientele for nails to this day, but we take more time behind the scenes and have seen a positive difference in the salon because of this.

How important to the success of the salon is the brands you offer?

We put a lot of effort into looking out for new treatments and products. We go to the Beauty 56•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Trade Shows in Dublin and London to do this.

We try to use Irish brands where we can.

With cutbacks that had to be made during recession, the one thing we refused to cut back on was our products, it has stood to us. Also, our staff have a huge say in what we use as they need to have the same passion as us, they wouldn’t be able to sell products they didn’t believe in.

How have you managed to survive and grow over the past 5 years?

We feel that we have survived and grown through a recession because we always give our clients what they want, from 100% customer service, great value for money, to the latest treatments and products and fantastic staff who are constantly being trained and love working in the salon. People feel the positive atmosphere when they walk through our door. And our loyal clients love supporting us.

What’s been a particular high?

We have had a lot of highs but the biggest to date is our current nomination in IMAGE Magazine’s Business of Beauty, in the ‘Best Beauty Salon’ category. This is a huge honour to have the recognition and we feel very proud!

And low?

The biggest low was three years ago when we had the bad snow during Christmas week. As our salon is located in Stepaside, we were very hard hit. This is the week to bring in the bacon, and nobody could get to us!

What’s in store for the future?

In five years time we know we will have expanded. We will be even better known than we are now, and hope to carry our amazing team of staff on that journey. A dream is a goal without a plan; we have big plans to get to our goals
