The Microneedler BPI’s Lucy Earley caught up with Elaine Fiddy of Smudgeproof to get the lowdown on one of the ultimate noninvasive anti-ageing treatments What is the Meso Vytal?

What‘s your background in beauty and when did you discover microneedling?

Parabens - the controversy Jennifer Rock looks at the issue of parabens. Are they really all that bad?

Parabens are a family of ingredients found in nature - especially in fruits, berries and vegetables. They’re also found in yeast extract, wine vinegar and cheese. They are used in skincare and medicines as preservatives.

There is a lot of controversy regarding preservatives and their tendency to irritate the skin. In particular, parabens take the brunt of the negative press. There has been a general ‘which side are you on?’ debate regarding their inclusion in cosmetics for an entire decade now.

Let us explore a little more, looking behind the hype, understanding parabens and their benefits before casting ill-informed judgement.

Parabens have excellent bactericidal and fungicidal properties. In the cosmetic world skincare safety and stabilisation of ingredients should be a priority for all manufacturing companies. Therefore, ensuring the products are free from pathogens is paramount. So, a preservative of some description is required to have a safe shelf life.

Parabens have been used since the 1950s to prevent the growth of microbes / bacteria in cosmetic products. Approximately 85% -97% of cosmetic products worldwide have parabens in them. They are the world’s mildest and commonly used preservatives. They are considered safe because of their low toxicity.

Parabens have a long history of safe use, and that’s why they’re commonly found and used in small and large manufacturing companies. The most common parabens used are butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben. Over the last few years, however, in response to customer concerns, many brands have started to manufacture (and label) paraben-free products, including lotions, lipsticks, shampoos, scrubs, and more.

What is worthwhile noting is that although a brand may advertise ‘paraben free’ on its labelling it does not mean that the raw ingredients are without parabens. European law stipulates that the ingredients in raw materials 14•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

must now also be declared.

However, I believe the real issue at hand must be to educate ourselves and realise the reasoning why parabens have been subject to ill propaganda and decide for yourself whether a product should be with or without them.

How it all started Where did the taboo come from? How did this controversy start? A study published in 2004 entitled ‘Concentration of Parabens in Human Breast Tumours’, by P. D. Darbre in the Journal of Applied Toxicology 24:5-13 (2004). (The report is available online.)

The purpose of this study was to examine breast tissue and tumours, the panel noted that there were parabens found in cancerous breast tissue and published this. People read this report and took it out of context linking the parabens found in deodorant directly to the breast cancer tissue. The situation escalated and Dr Darbre attempted to withdraw the paper. A few months later he published an article explaining that nowhere did he infer that parabens were linked to cancer. In fact, he just believed that this was an area that needed to be studied more. Unhappy with the response he even asked for the article to be removed. From a scientific stand point, The Peer Review - when scientists review any paper and determine if it´s legitimate science - concluded that the review had no control group and the there was too small of a sample size, i.e. 20 patients were examined. No causative link has been found between the parabens found in deodorant and breast cancer.

We all appreciate the power of marketing in the beauty industry and acknowledge the significance of our clients grouping together to support a cause. However this may be a prime example of how it can also work against us.

Instead of jumping on the bandwagon let’s be aware of the study that instigated this debate; be aware that it had been grossly taken out of context to the point that even the author wished to revoke all links to it. Perhaps we should stop eating fruit and veg too? After all that’s where parabens are found in nature.

Moroccan Nights Get that Moroccan Feel from Gelish’s ‘Colours of Paradise’ range, www.creativeacademy.ie Step 1 Shape the nail using a thin wooden file. Push back the cuticle.

Remove the shine from the nail plate using the 180 grit side of the Harmony grit buffer. Apply Nail Surface Cleanse to a lint-free nail wipe to remove any dust. Apply pH Bond to remove any excess moisture. Apply a very thin coat of Foundation Gel to the entire nail and cap the free edge. Cure inthe Gelish 18G LED Light for 5 seconds or 1 minute in a 36-watt UV light. Wipe the surface of the cured Foundation Gel to remove excess tackiness. Step 2 Apply a thin coat of Arctic Freeze making sure to cap the free edge and cure in the Gelish 18G LED light for 30 seconds. Apply a second

thin coat of Arctic Freeze, cap the free edge and cure for 30 seconds (or 2 minutes in a 36- watt UV lamp). Step 3 Apply a thin coat of Champagne from cuticle to free edge and cure in the Gelish 18G LED light for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp.

Load a small amount of Arctic Freeze, Copa Cabana Banana, After Dark, Tahiti Hottie, Rockin’ the Reef, Pacific Sunset and Rub Me The Sarong Way to a palette.

Preblend Arctic Freeze and Copa Cabana Banana to make a lemon yellow colour. Pre-blend Arctic Freeze and AfterDark to make light blue. Step 4 Using a customised Striper brush and custom-blended lemon yellow, create a curving

wedge from the free edge toward the cuticle. Using the light blue, outline the right side of the wedge.

Using Tahiti Hottie, outline the left side of the wedge. All the stripes will be wider at the free edge and get thinner toward the cuticle. Cure for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp. Using a marbling tool and light blue colour, make three dots to create a scallop.

Using the custom Striper brush and light blue create an arch outline above the scallops. Wipe off the custom Striper and pick up the purple to create an arch and a tear drop outline on the left side. Cure for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp. Step 5 Using the marbling tool and light blue, create

dots along the light blue arch. Step 6 Wipe off the marbling tool and pick up Tahiti Hottie and create dots along the purple arch; continuing toward the cuticle. Cure for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp. Using the marbleizing tool and the Rub Me The Sarong Way, fill in the purple arch and tear drop. Step 7 Using the Mini Striper, fill in the light blue arch with pink.

Step 8 Using the marbling tool and Arctic Freeze, create dots inside the light blue andpurple dots. Cure in the 18G LED light for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp.

Step 9 Using the custom striper and After Dark, create a thin line outlining the lemon yellow. Using the marbling tool create dots along the perimeter of the design using After Dark, Rub Me The Sarong Way and Pacific Sunset. Cure for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp. Step 10 Apply a thin coat of Gelish Top It Off Sealer making sure to cap the free edge. Cure in the 18G LED light for 30 seconds or 2 minutes in a 36-watt UV lamp.

The Kardashian Curse To Contour - Or Not To Contour?

That is the question asked by MUA to the celebs, Ken Boylan We’re all guilty of checking out the latest fads on YouTube, and trying them out in the privacy of our bedrooms. But, the sad reality is when you copy Kim Kardashian’s contouring look you end up looking like a patchwork quilt!

This doesn´t need to happen. All you need to recreate the look is foundation. I recommend Ken Boylan´s Make-up/Play award-winning HD Foundation N45, €30, bronzer, (preferably matte) Matte Bronzer 300, €25, and a skin toned highlighter, (preferably cream), Afterglow, €20.

Prep your skin with my Photoready Primer, €25, apply foundation as normal, mattify skin with a light dusting of Dual Powder N5, €28.

How to Do it: Using a slanted blusher brush, lightly apply bronzer in an imaginary line from the top of your ear to the corner of your mouth - sucking your cheeks in really helps you to see that line.

Using a clean powder brush blend the line softly until it gives a light shading underneath your cheekbone.

On your cheekbone apply a small amount of Afterglow with your fingertip and pat gently until there is a very soft sheen on the bone.

Apply blusher to the apple of your cheek.

To create a slimmer nose, apply a small amount of bronzer to the sides of your nose and a touch of highlighter from the bridge to the tip. You´re ready to rock that contoured look - leaving the patchwork quilt back in the bedroom! Go to: www.kenboylan.com

How did you develop HD Brows?

During university I was a part-time receptionist in a salon. I loved the industry so much that I took over that salon, with my sister Amita, a qualified therapist.

I trained bit-by-bit in beauty and my first treatments were in CACI and permanent makeup. Being Indian we ‘inherited’ a flair for hair removal! We sold the salon and I became an educator for Karen Betts of Nouveau Contour.

I noticed a lack of knowledge of eyebrow shaping and suggested a brow shaping course.

The course became so popular that HD Brows was born in 2008.

I know when I die I want HD Brows make-up to be my legacy and to sit alongside the likes of Armani and Lancôme worldwide!

Did you get any help or loans?

We never had a loan to start with but we had an existing academy at Nouveau Contour HQ and a network of potential clients.

What advice would you give yourself looking back on that opening stage of the business?

I never had a plan and I was crazy not to. I am a risk taker and believe in myself. Money doesn’t motivate me, fear of failing does. Always have a plan!

It has to be your predominant mental attitude. It is not enough to think positively for a few moments, to then let fears and lack of belief enter your mind. Some effort and inner work are necessary.

Think positively and expect only favourable results and situations, even if your current circumstances are not as you wish them to be. In time, your mental attitude will affect your life and circumstances and change them accordingly!

Teaching Matters Derek O’Kelly imparts some advice on developing confidence for teaching Confidence seems to be one of the most common barriers that aspiring teachers can place in their way. It seems to be a complex topic for some who perceive it as something one is born with, or the sole preserve of the gifted. But the good news is, it’s neither.

What Is Confidence?

There are many definitions of confidence. But the one I personally found was the easiest to understand early on in my teaching career is: “Confidence helps us to move towards a goal or outcome we would like to achieve.”

Everyone has confidence, otherwise they would not have progressed through life. Almost every day we are faced with new challenges or things to do, and in many situations, they require an element of confidence to move forward.

Confidence can be Acquired and Learned - There is no such thing as a confidence gene. It

can be learned and acquired. Whatever our predisposition or personality type, everyone has the ability to develop their confidence.

Confidence is more about actions than feelings - Many people think that they have to “feel” confident before they can attempt something, but building your confidence is more about taking the physical actions that are needed to move towards your goal or outcome.

Attitude and Mindset Builds Confidence - Your mindset or attitude can also play a vital role in developing your confidence. It’s important that your mindset and attitude is positive.

Knowledge Builds Confidence - Knowledge can play a big role in building one´s confidence. If we don‘t have knowledge about the situation we are moving towards, e.g. teaching, then it‘s only fair to say we are not going to feel confident.

Building your knowledge about what lies ahead will help conquer the fear of the unknown and automatically builds your confidence.

Bronwyn Conroy looks at Hyaluronic Acid - is it really the ‘Fountain of Youth’ that it’s claimed to be?

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, is now widely available in supplements, serums, creams and injectables. But is it the miracle ingredient that it claims to be? At present it is the new (ish) ‘buzz word’ in the beauty industry but it´s been around for a long time. It has traditionally been used to treat osteoarthritis, as it is a lubricant and shock absorber.

What is it? Hyaluronic acid is a glycol that occurs naturally in the body. It is a humectant, which means that it has the ability to attract water into itself, in a manner of speaking. It is used in the cosmetic industry in creams and serums to hydrate and plump out the skin and it has replaced some traditional facial fillers and lip augmentation products as there is little risk of allergy; it’s present in the skin anyway. There is something reassuring about injecting a natural substance into your face that is good for your skin - as opposed to a toxin.

As an injectable hyaluronic acid can be used to plump out any facial lines in a softer and more natural way than Botox. It also lasts longer with clients getting approximately 9 months from each treatment. Results are immediate and there is little downtime, only a slight risk of bruising.

For the more cautious it is available in serum form. HA is often sold using the analogy of the wet and dry sponge and the importance of skin hydration, but it actually has multiple benefits for our skin not only does it hydrate it stimulates the production of collagen, it is an 56•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

antioxidant, free radical scavenger, maintains skin elasticity, cushions joints and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

It is an easy product to retail as there are very few products that are universal.

Hyaluronic acid is beneficial for every age and skin type. If you have a dry skin type it is a good booster serum under your day / night cream. For oily skins it can be used alone with no moisturiser. If you have an oily skin type make sure there is no oil added to the serum and you will be able to hydrate without putting in any grease...the Holy Grail for oily skins!

The serums are applied to a damp face to lock the moisture in. They look and feel like water but they give the skin a lovely texture.

Hyaluronic acid is also available as an oral supplement, it plays a critical role in the production of collagen, which we need to support our skin structure. As our collagen levels break down wrinkling and sagging occurs. Hyaluronic acid keeps collagen synthesis up as well as keeping our skin hydrated making us more resistant to wrinkles and fine lines.
