SHAPING FUTURES Shaping Futures is a social initiative launched by Schwarzkopf Professional in cooperation with SOS Children’s Villages, helping to transform the lives of young children around the world. A team of eight

hairdressers as well as Shaping Futures Ambassador, Janet Maitland, was chosen to provide a six-week intense training course supporting disadvantaged young people in India to learn hairdressing skills in order to get a job and earn a living. The

30 students will be taught how to cut, straighten, curl, style, perm and colour hair, and at the end of the course will be placed for apprenticeships within one of the large hairdressing chains in India.

NIMA’S NEW LAUNCH Irish make-up brush supplier and one of the sponsors of the All Ireland MUA Championships, Nima Brushes, has just launched a new brush collection ‘The Artistic Collection’. MD Niamh Martin tells us how to recreate J’Lo’s ‘wet look’ from the 2014 VMA’s, a sheen/ plumped up look. Using Fuschia’s Candle Glow Highlighter (using your small duo fibre brush) sweep it over the raised areas of the face - forehead, cheekbones, down the middle of the nose and onto the chin. Using Make Up For Ever‘s HD invisible cover concealer in a shade or two darker than the skin tone (using your contoured angled brush), we‘re going to create a more sculpted look by working this into the skin directly under the cheekbones, down along the jawline and along the hairline, Kardashian style. Apply foundation directly on top of your highlighted and shaded areas. Use something with minimum oil content (to keep shine at bay). Follow by applying a small dab of cream blush across the cheekbones for colour and lift, your medium duo fibre will help apply this. Define the brows - but go easy! Small features require soft, smaller brows where larger features can go stronger and more defined. Don‘t do this the wrong way around or it‘ll throw your facial features. Your angled brow brush will give you defined, perfectly tapered brows. Avoid too much shimmer on the eyes if you‘ve gone for the dewy look on the face, aim for a more matte look, or maybe a slick eyeliner effect using a gel eyeliner and your bent eyeliner brush. Applying a highlighter on the inner corner of the eyes and just underneath the raised area (using a smaller detail brush) of the brow will open the eyes up giving you a fresh, wide eyed and bushy tailed look! I opt for Inglot’s 395 shadow from their Freedom Collection. Keep your mascara water resistant because we don‘t want it mixing with the oils in your under eye concealer. Use a little powder just underneath your lower lash line using a small eye

brush and a setting powder (Fuschia‘s rice powder will work perfectly). A soft lip liner to add definition to the lips followed by a high shine gloss will finish your look off nicely. Heavy, darker lips require a more matte finish so keep that for another night! Where did you train originally? I’m from Liverpool and trained in beauty therapy college when I left school. I knew from a young age I wanted a career in the beauty industry and as a few of my family members were in the hair and beauty industry, I had a good insight from very early on. What is your company‘s ethos? My company’s ethos is to provide high quality products alongside accredited training courses. Each of our tutors hold a certificate in teaching, so that means our students are taught to the highest standard possible. Our excellent support team means we are never more than a phone call or email away, making our customer service stand out from the rest. What is best thing about your job? The beauty industry is so versatile. There are so many diverse avenues you can take within the industry moving into and specialising in different areas. Light It Up In a two-part series Nichola Graham runs us through some photographic make-up tips starting with the base and basics GET THE LIGHT RIGHT Apply make-up in natural light. This will give you the best idea of how the make-up really looks like blended and colour matched. Keep in mind that studio light can lighten colour (eyes, lips, cheeks) by up to two shades so you may need to layer the product in order to make it pop on camera. SKIN PREP As a make-up artist it’s not only your job to prep the skin properly in terms of cleansing, priming etc., it’s also down to you to ensure that the brows are groomed as ‘fuzzy’ brow hair on the brow bone will not only show up on camera, it will also make your eye make-up look bad. A small electric Brow Trimmer (available from most Boots stores) is perfect for trimming brows if you don’t have time to tweeze and ensures there’s no redness. PRIMERS Silicone primers generally add extra ‘slip’ under a foundation, exacerbated by studio lights. Opt instead for a shine control or mattifying primer. My favourite is Nurturing Force Blot Out Shine Offensive. Not only does it smell like baby powder it also soaks up excess oil and is particularly great for men and bald heads! BASE While mineral foundations are beautiful in natural light they’ll be your worst nightmare when it comes to camera flash and studio lights. Most mineral make-up contains bismuth oxychloride; this adds a pearlescent finish to the skin. It also makes normal sized pore look even bigger. Mineral make-up always contains titanium dioxide, a sunscreen. Unfortunately it reflects the flash of a photographer’s camera. This means the face will be highly reflective in any photo using artificial lighting. Instead, opt for an oil-free foundation and match it perfectly to the skin tone. BODY AND HANDS Don’t forget, if the skin on the body (arms, legs, chest and hands, etc.) is exposed this also needs to have make-up applied to it. Any redness in the skin will show up on camera. non-transfer make-ups are designed specifically for this purpose. POWDER Loose powder is best for setting your base as it’s milled finely and therefore won’t look powdery on the skin. Translucent or transparent is best. For touch-ups throughout the shoot opt for a pressed powder. The best loose and pressed powders I have ever used are Kett Sett Powders. They are finely milled and don’t add build up on the skin.

The LCT The Dylan Bradshaw Salon was asked to open the 59th International L‘Oreal Colour Trophy - the only Irish Salon ever asked to do so. The Awards were held in the beautiful Grosvenor House in London with the cream of the hairstyling industry present, including celebrity hairstylists Daniel Galvin and Trevor Sorbie.

How long have you been involved in the L‘Oreal Colour Trophy? The first time I entered I came nowhere, I hadn’t done much prep and entered anyway, that was around 1999 or 2000. Since then, we have won numerous times and always enjoy taking part. You created the main show, what was your inspiration for it? For the main show, we tipped our hat to Haute Couture and the precise detailing, structures, embellishments of the world’s most renowned fashion designers. We hope we have put together an exciting show, which demonstrates our skill and creative vision. We brought Israeli photographer Sasha Prilutsky, whose work was featured in Italian Vogue to document the show and Irish model Maria Boardman, whose striking look is very directional. How do you balance your work with the 36•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

L‘Oreal Colour Trophy and in the salon? It has been a hectic few months, as well as running a salon, creating the L‘Oreal Colour Trophy show, I have also moved house during that time. It has taken 6 months to bring our creations to life, working together with the db Creative Team. Luckily I am surrounded by great staff, Kimberley our Salon Director has managed the salon with the least amount of interruption so we could concentrate on our daily client appointments and work on the LCT. Stick tip to smile line - cut tip and shape. Dust 4. Add two layers of primer 5. Nail bed extension – Place a medium size bead Astonishing Nails Acrylic Powder Makeover Pink or Makeover Peach between the middle of the nail bed and the point where the new free edge will be created. Press bead down to create the new free edge. Fade the remaining product toward the cuticle area, allowing it to end flush with the natural nail without creating a definite line. Clean off your brush and sharpen the line that will become your smile line. 6. Apply Astonishing Nails Mega White to free edge 7. Stress Area – Place a medium size bead Astonishing Nails Acrylic Powder Clear in the middle of the nail. Press the product from side to side to build the apex following the shape of the nail. Led Zepp’d Jennifer Rock looks at an upcoming trend - Light Emitting Diodes

LED lights are already a permanent feature in many London, UK, Australia and US salons. It seems to be our turn to embrace this results driven light therapy treatment. LED standing for Light emitting Diode, a technology first designed by NASA working on the premise that they send energy producing packets of light into the deeper layers of the skin. Ask not what NASA does for skin but…appreciate the fact it must be high-grade technology! (They were studying how light might influence plant growth in space, then doctors researched how it may encourage dermal growth in our skin! Disclaimer: not plant growth!) LED are lights which are visible to the naked eye unlike UV, will not photosensitise the skin, are deemed NOT carcinogenic, are painfree, calming and extremely beneficial to the skin. There are three lights, blue, red and amber. Each boasting their own merit. They can be offered as a standalone treatment or cocktailed as an added benefit to a facial, etc. Basically the skin has the ability to absorb light and then convert it into energy. This stimulates and causes a higher cell turnover rate, encourages lymphatic system – these are some of its benefits. Blue has the ability to kill bacteria, so essential in the reality of fighting acne conditions. The blue light is also credited with calming skin inflammation and irritation. It is an effective noninvasive means to treat a tender yet reactive skin. This skin condition has often been subjected to harsh exfoliants, astringents, medications, peels and mechanical pummelling devices, while this alternative involves no hands on touch per say yet still gets results. Red light when emitted onto the skin has the ability to stimulate the fibroblast cell. It is used as a booster for anti-ageing benefits alongside scar tissue treatments. The red light has been reported to help in facial muscle relaxation, ideal for the frown line and naso-labial line region we all dread! sensitive, red and vascular skins. This one may do well on our weather beaten island so! It helps to minimise the redness alongside the bumps blemishes and irritation that accompanies it. It targets environmentally induced irritation while inhibiting bacterial growth. Although the target zone for the light is the dermal layer, the living layer of the skin, all layers will benefit i.e. the five layers of the epidermis, so thorough skin rejuvenation will take place. Before and after pictures have visible differences in skin clarity, smoothness, texture and even open pores. There is a grey area however, as it is still a relatively new science in the mainstream capacity as there are many conflicting opinions. Many claim there should be more clinical papers and scientific reports to support the claims being made. However the visuals, testimonials and results that regular clients attribute to this treatment tend to speak volumes. Indeed some clinical nursing clinics have LED rooms now as the lights also boost serotonin (happy hormones) levels, ideal in the treatment of depression. This is also a must for us in the northern hemisphere, a nation prone to SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and clinically proven to be deficient in Vit D thanks to the lack of UVB rays! If our serotonin levels are peaked it may affect us positively mentally as well as physically. Overall the lights seem to claim benefit on stretch marks, rosacea, hyper pigmentation and severe photodamage, the hardest coupling of skin conditions to treat. A course is usually advised - six treatments a week apart for optimum results. The treatment itself can take as little as 5 minutes – 30 minutes; dependant on need and severity and also the size of the machine head. Some machines are hand held small devices, while others are body designed heads to cover a large area at one time. It is an enjoyable treatment to receive. It does not cause heat unlike IPL treatments so there is no downtime or ‘hiding’ time! Shall we see this trend take over our little country?

What’s Up Doc? As the ‘sickness’ season looms, what are your rights in relation to medical appointments? Pensinsula Business Services investigates Generally, employers do not need to pay staff for time taken off for attending appointments such as doctors or dentists appointments, or any other medically related meeting. The employee is not at work; therefore does not need to be paid. Contracts of employment should be checked though, to ensure that there is no contractual provision entitling the employee to full pay during time taken off for this reason. The key consideration with this issue is the content of any written company policy, such as a sickness absence policy. If the employee is a flexi-worker, or works part-time, it may be easier for them to attend such appointments outside of working hours. Another key consideration is the custom and practice within an organisation. If you have always paid employees for such time off then you may be bound to do so going forward as it may be deemed an implied term and condition of employment.

What About Antenatal Classes? The situation is different when the employee is pregnant and the appointment is for antenatal care. A pregnant employee is entitled to take time off work with pay during normal working hours to attend ante-natal appointments. The right applies regardless of length of service, size of employer or the number of hours worked by the employee per week. The right also extends to travelling time and waiting time in connection with the appointment, not simply the time spent in the appointment itself. Antenatal care can include relaxation and parent-craft classes, so is not just limited to medical examinations. Most employers are not aware that fathers also have rights in respect of paid time to attend antenatal classes. Fathers are entitled to paid time off to attend the last two antenatal classes, but this is a one-off entitlement and does not apply to all pregnancies.

The Dark Side! Bronwyn Conroy examines the issue of skin brightening. The desire to create a uniform, luminous skin tone has been around for centuries. In Japan geishas used animal derived bleaching agents. In the 1800s European women used arsenic to create an even skin tone! Hyper pigmentation also known as chloasma or melasma which means ‘dark skin’ is also known as ‘the mask of pregnancy‘. But you don‘t have to be pregnant (or even a woman!) to develop melasma. The main triggers of melasma are: Sun Damage. An excess or melanin from UV exposure causes freckles and eventually isolated dark spots. Skin Trauma and Acne Scarring - dark spots occur where the skin has healed after an acne outbreak or another skin trauma. Hormonal Imbalance, pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and HRT can all cause hyper pigmentation. It should subside post pregnancy, but that’s not always the case. 70•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

There are a lot of treatments available to lighten the skin and even the skin tone. For isolated patches of pigmentation there are creams that are topically applied directly onto the darker patches to bleach them. IPL and laser treatments are also available as a stronger alternative. It is vital that the skin is not exposed to UV light during the course of these treatments. Skincare lightening ranges available are very effective, and they increase the effectiveness of the treatment. It’s always advisable to use a couple of the products from skincare lightening ranges. Carter Power Ellen Kavanagh chats to Cocoa Brown Creator Marissa Carter. How did you start Cocoa Brown? I had received a certificate in Cosmetic Chemistry and Skin Histology with Dr. Pugliese in Philadelphia, USA in 2007 and began dabbling in creating my own skincare line. The decision to create a self-tanning product from scratch came about because I wanted to solve so many of the tanning problems my beauty salon customers had at the time. What went right – and wrong – at launch time? About a week before launching, I remember attending a branding seminar and being told by the

branding expert in no uncertain terms that he didn‘t think my branding was very good. I got into my car, phoned my best friend and cried my eyes out. I had 25,000 bottles due to hit shelves and he had completely shattered my confidence. To this day, I would like to send him a little note, telling him how many bottles of my “poorly branded” products I have sold! Did you get any help or loans to start out the business? I was very lucky, I approached a local distribution company in Ireland who (after a bit of convincing) took a chance on me and gave me a preorder for the entire first batch. What advice would you give other burgeoning entrepreneurs? Become an expert in the area of beauty you would like to focus on!

What has been a particular high? Being invited to Hollywood in February to be the official tanning partner for the Pre-Oscars. We tanned seven Oscar nominees for the ceremony and I got to attend the Elton John Oscar Party! …and low? A low this year was missing the submissions deadline to have four of my new Cocoa Brown products listed in Tesco this year, but unfortunately you can‘t win them all. What‘s next for Cocoa Brown? We’re launching in the US. We just have a few more weeks to wait and we‘ll have our first Cocoa Brown launch in New York!

Here are several tips on how to think positively: V Display a more positive emotional and mental attitude toward yourself, other people and situations. V Refuse to participate in negative inner dialogues. It‘s just a waste of time and energy. V Don‘t allow disappointments, difficulties and obstacles affect your moods and state of mind. V Refuse and reject negative thinking. Either replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts, or engage yourself in some activity that will divert your attention from the negative thoughts. V Don‘t allow what people think and say affect your mind and mood.

V Associate with people who bring something of value into your life. Avoid people who sap your energy and enthusiasm. If you can‘t avoid them, learn how stay detached when you‘re in their company. V Say positive things about yourself and about other people. V Compliment people when you feel they deserve it. V Have faith in yourself and in your abilities. V Set goals no matter how impossible this might seem at the moment and keep yourself busy working on them. V Remember: “The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.” Be careful what mental images you let in into your mind. How you see yourself and your surroundings make a difference to your thinking. It is like watching a video. Eject the old video cassette or CD and insert a new and better one instead.
