Belfast-based beauty distribution business, Euro Products (distributor of He-Shi, Tantastic and Skinician among other brands) has announced that it will be merging with sister company 4Beauty Group. The newly formed business, employing 30+ people nationwide, will be known as 4Beauty Group. A Sanctuary Ellen Kavanagh chats to Mary O’Donoghue of The Sanctuary Beauty Group and Sanctuary Beauty Academy, Tralee How did you start out in the industry? It's been over 25 years since I started out, but I remember I had a passion for (and a huge interest in) the developments in the beauty industry and wanted to have a salon that gave clients the results they required. What advice would you give yourself looking back at that opening stage? I now believe that if there had been a training course for developing a health and beauty business it would have given me the tools necessary to operate the start

up as a business, especially as I started to expand. Over time I learned that you also need to spend time working on the business and not in it. You’ve been through a few recessions. How did you manage to not only keep the salon open but to also grow it? I won’t say it was easy; there has been a lot of stress in the last few years, but I kept looking forward and with the support of my suppliers was able to invest in new equipment. I was able to keep my staff and have increased our numbers in the last 18

months. Over eight years ago I opened the Sanctuary Beauty Academy with the desire to train professional therapists to the highest standard possible, this has been very successful as the emphasis is on the needs of the employer. The the majority of the graduates are working in 5-Star facilities. Also, having found the right location for the college provided the opportunity for my daughter Fiona to open The Glam Pod, a beauty express bar. I’m very proud of her. What has been a particular high? I had that fear that people wouldn’t turn up on our opening night 10 years ago, but when I walked into the room the place was full. It was a lovely feeling to see the support and best wishes from our customers.

What was the low? My father passed away one week before the college opened and I would have loved him to see what I had accomplished. He was my right-hand man. What’s the next step for the Sanctuary Beauty Group? We will be a product distributor in the New Year, at present we are investing in the latest technology to provide more advanced treatments for our customers, the college has added new courses and our target is to attract International students for the next academic year.

Re-Current It’s interesting when an `antiquated' treatment suddenly reappears - iiaa Trainer Jennifer Rock looks at the renaissance of the Microcurrent The first of a two-part ROCK REPORT Microcurrent, Electric muscular stimulation, faradism, faradic - call it what you will, this treatment is causing a frenzy on these shores of late - but why? Considering that it has been used in the cosmetic industry since the 19th century, it’s certainly worth digging a lot deeper to investigate. Microcurrent works beyond the skin and targets the muscles in a passive manner, i.e., meaning the muscles are contracted without you physically having to exert yourself. Sounds tolerable, almost too good to be true in fact! If only the gym was the same! Throughout my research for this article I have interviewed many distributors of such equipment in a bid to decipher what their technology’s USP is. Yet the common denominator among all appeared to boil down to one end scenario: this treatment is only as good as the person performing it. Nothing new there so! Microcurrent Versus Skincare Skincare as we all know is often many a salon owner’s breadwinner. Detailed consultations, homecare / retail coupled with treatments are guaranteed to ensure client loyalty and results. But as the saying goes ‘beauty is not only skin deep’. In this situation we suggest that uniting phenomenal results driven skincare, with the ability to keep the muscle tone firm, could be another step towards youthful healthy, glowing skin. It should not replace the skincare regime, merely be in

addition to it. In fact, one skin specialist, Michael Pugliese has researched the effect of Microcurrent on the skin. Following years of trials he concluded that Microcurrent also stimulated the fibroblast cells. He also claimed that if one used Vitamin A, antioxidants and other powerful skin nutrients alongside Microcurrent we may not have to depend on good gene pools! Certainly good news for me, as it is reported that only 10% of our individual ageing is due to our folks! What’s Involved? There are two forms of microcurrent used - MENS and TENS (both varying in their strength). TENS is typically used in medical treatments for pain relief of tendons, ligament, nerves, or in a bid to accelerate the healing time following an injury. MENS use low electrical currents, which involves the gentle current being driven through the skin into the muscle in order to tone and firm. Queue visions of torture chambers and horrid flashbacks to ‘the college days’, when undergrads with not a wrinkle or ‘turkey’ neck between them attempted to undertake the mammoth task of muscle positioning, correct contraction control and duration. Nail Insider! She’s the insider, so you better take heed! Nailprenuer Sue Davies is the Chief Organiser of the Vtct All-Ireland Nail Championships, which will take place on the 22nd of February (the Vtct All-Ireland MUA Championships take place on the 23rd of February).

Sue Davies joined the nail industry in 2002 and went on to also qualify as a beauty and holistic therapist. In 2005, Sue began working for an industry renowned technician. This led to a salon management role and an involvement in key areas of the nail industry that would last for many years. Sue worked as Assistant Director of the Association of Nail Technicians (ANT) until it was wound down in late 2008, where she worked to promote technician standards and ethics as well as raising consumer awareness. Sue has worked with Professional Beauty Nail Competitions as Competition Organiser and Judge at all PB events between 2006 and 2010. She has gone on to run her own successful salon, Gorgeous Nail & Beauty Emporium, and has herself been a finalist in Scratch Stars Awards Nail Salon of the Year (Independent) in 26•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

2012, 2013, going on to win the prestigious industry awards in 2014. Her salon also made the Professional Beauty Top 15 Most Inspiring UK Nail Salons. She educates in nails and beauty for market leading brands within her training academy. Sue has recently expanded her business to encompass product distribution and is cofounder of the new Nail Industry Association. So…as we were saying take heed of Sue’s top tips to give you the creative edge: 1. Complete your entry form and get it in early. The earlier you apply the lower the number your model will have and the quicker she’ll get through. This can make all the difference when competing in the Technician Awards as you may need to soak off and prep. Competitor numbers are issued on a first come first serve basis. So if you want your model to be #1 in the queue, get in quick! 2. Make sure you arrive early and ensure that you have carried out a full kit check list so that you are able to get set up promptly and breathe before your category commences. 3. Polish early and keep hands away from work area while you buff the left hand to make sure it’s dry for judging. Many a competitor has lost marks due to wet polish being smudged before it’s judged.

The Basics: V Complete your entry form and get all of the relevant information in early. V Arrive early! That way you won’t be panicking and will have time to relax before the competition start time. V Read the competition information thoroughly and make note of everything you need for entry on the day, including your model release form, confirmation of payment etc. Competition judges look for the following criteria: V Reflection of Theme - Your creation should reflect the theme without explanation required. If you have to explain what it’s ‘supposed’ to be, that’s not good. V Design – Is your design unique and original? V Application Technique – Is your application precise, blended and neat? V Use of Colour and Overall Presentation (which includes costume and hair) – Is the colour and overall look a good reflection of the theme? V Look for inspiration on the internet, in magazines and picture books. Use your imagination and try to create an original theme. Do not copy a make-up someone else has already showcased. off. Be unique! V Plan your idea well in advance of the competition. Ensure that it reflects the theme. Practice it and iron out any areas you need to prior to the competition day. V Think about timing each stage of your look so that you can keep to the time limit. Your model can help you with this by prompting you quietly throughout. V Choose a model that is comfortable displaying your creation and ‘showing it off ’ at it’s best. Someone who is shy or timid may not have the confidence to do this. V Make sure your kit is clean and tidy and that all the products are clearly labelled. Preparation is vital to your performance on the day. V Write a full list of everything you will need as you practice, so that nothing is forgotten. Take extra materials in case you make a mistake and need to start again. V Whatever happens, be proud that you have had the confidence to enter a competition and learn from it. All too often those who don’t place can feel disheartened. Judges are always available to offer guidance and advice in relation to where you have placed in the competition. Don’t be afraid to ask if there are areas that you need to improve on. V Finally, enjoy it!

Hair should have loads of height and fullness but left imperfect to modernise the look. The trend continues with this year’s ‘up style’ of the ponytail. Hot Wax has typically scared therapists who are more confident using waxing methods involving strip wax only. This is mainly due to years of horror stories and scare tactics from some manufacturers (using symbolism like the “Grim Reaper”) because of extremely poor Hot Wax options available for Beauty Therapists. These inferior waxes caused problems such as wax brittleness, which lead to further pain and hair breakage, rather than removal. These waxes were very expensive too, equating to unhygienic practices such as “sifting” to re-use the wax! In a special end-of-year feature, Ellen Kavanagh of Waxperts gets the lowdown on Suzanne Jackson of sosueme.ie and her love of beauty from the very start… You started by doing a beauty course? When I was working in Topshop, I saw a girl arrive into the shop dressed head-to-toe in a very chic looking uniform. It caught my eye straight away and I was intrigued to know where she was working. She explained that she was studying beauty therapy in Coogan Bergin and went on to tell me about the course and how much she loved it. I remember thinking about how much I would like to do something similar. Coogan Bergin impressed me the most, so I opted to go there. The course was tough, and very science-based, but I loved it so much. I received all honours in my exams and I was especially pleased to learn that I was the only student in the college who had received honours in electrolysis as well.

You‘ve launched your workshops for 2015, your first book was a huge success, and now it‘s time for lashes and book number two! You are unstoppable!! Was it a difficult process? It was a very busy process that involved a lot of hard work! I first launched my 2014 workshops last March and they were all a big success. The feedback was fantastic, so that’s why I decided to embark on a workshop tour for 2015 and hopefully get to all the counties that I didn’t make it to this year.

When did you decide to blog? Had you been reading any blogs in particular that inspired you? Yes, I was always reading international blogs, especially the blog by Annette Haga. I loved the big international fashion blogs and it was while reading these that I realised there was a gap in the home blog market for someone to write about fashion and beauty. I set up SoSueMe back in July 2010. At the time, I was working on the front desk in 98fm. As there were so many celebrities passing through the studio doors, it occurred to me that this was something I could write about from the perspective of a normal girl.

Do you feel having your qualifications in beauty has helped your credibility as a blogger? Yes, absolutely. When I was writing my first book, I spoke about the different skin types and beauty products, and I would have learned a lot about that subject through studying beauty therapy. In my second book, I recommend different beauty products and again, my qualification was a big help.

Can you think back to when you decided to make it your full time job? It was in March 2013 that I left my job in 98fm to pursue blogging full time. Fortunately, nothing went wrong. If anything, things went from strength to strength. The day after I handed in my notice, I signed a book deal with Blackwater Press. That first book went on to become a Christmas bestseller, and my second book has hit the shelves this week! Did you need any help or loans to start out the business? I borrowed money from my grandmother so I could hire a web designer to help me create a proper website for SoSueMe. I then paid back my grandmother a set amount each month. What has a been a particular high? My first book becoming a best seller was the ultimate high point. I never in a million years thought it would sell in the volumes it did, so I was over the moon when my publisher phoned to say it was on the bestsellers’ list. It was a big achievement for me, and one I am very proud of! And a low? Probably when my SoSueMe lash line fell through at the last minute last year. I had embarked on a business deal with an individual who then let me down at the last minute. I was so down and upset about it, but then I came to realise that even though it was a horrible experience, it was also a very valuable lesson in business. I’m a firm believer in what’s meant to be will be, and when I decided to get the SoSueMe lash line back on track, I found a brilliant new business partner. The lash line will now hit the shops in the New Year. This time around, I feel much more confident and much more in control of the situation.

THE CONTOUR Photography is where contouring really excels! Use a contour powder that has a slightly grey undertone to it as this mimics natural shadows more than a bronzer will. As our skincare culture becomes more and more obsessed with exfoliation there is an ever-increasing number of brush cleansers for home use on the market. Brush cleansing is advantageous as it exfoliates while it cleanses. This form of cleansing became popular again with the launch of Clarisonic, the ‘Rolls Royce’ of brush cleansing implements. Boots and other high street retailers were quick to jump on the bandwagon offering more affordable options (the new festive limited edition Clarisonic retails at €199). The Clarisonic promises to beautifully transform the skin using a sonic frequency that produces over 300 movements per second to cleanse the skin six times better than hands alone. Ideally brush cleansers should be used with a facial wash on clean skin so it gives the skin a deeper clean and exfoliation. Probationary Policy Firstly, it is important to note that companies can only implement the use of probationary periods once a probationary clause has been included in the individual’s contract of employment, and the employee is aware that their contract is subject to their satisfactory completion of it. Probationary periods are generally set at 6 months and can be extended on the outcome of a probationary review meeting, however not exceeding a maximum of 12 months as outlined in the Unfair Dismissals Act 1997 – 2007 (please note that the employee’s notice period should be considered in this timeframe). Probationary Reviews Review meetings are an opportunity to evaluate the employee’s overall performance since joining the company - and is not an alternative to disciplinary procedures. However any disciplinary proceedings to date can be considered in the course of a probationary review. Review meetings are a chance for the appraiser and employee to have an open, frank and proactive discussion on what the employee has achieved to date. At the start of employment

the manager conducting the appraisal should agree clear and achievable objectives for the employee to strive for. Using measurable targets and standards can be useful, as it shows clearly the progress the employee has made in the reference period. It is important to remember that employees may perform better if they know what is expected of them and they will require support to achieve this. This is particularly true in the case of new employees or new positions. Performance reviews should be set at increments, usually 3 and 6 months. Identifying Performance Concerns Early identification of performance issues can be very helpful to employers, as once identified, steps can be put in place to address. By identifying issues at the onset of employment, companies can tackle the issue head on rather than allowing the issue to escalate. It also allows a neutral platform for employees to raise any issues that they may have. If in the unfortunate situation that it is identified that an employee is not meeting expectations, a probationary review can justify ending an underperforming employees contract of employment. Professional Beauty Ireland 2014 review

Stars of the show The Professional Beauty Ireland show brought exciting new product and treatment launches along with heaps of business development opportunities to The RDS, Dublin. Visitors turned out to the exhibition, on 5-6 October to check out new launches and exclusive deals from the likes of: Dermalogica, Moroccan Tan, iiaa and French Cosmetics. The show saw over 8,400* visitors over the two days, with many using the show to prepare for the Christmas period and to stock up for the year ahead. *Subject to ABC audit The number of VIPs – all owners from salons and spas – visiting the show more than doubled from the previous year. The 2014 show welcomed both new and returning big-name exhibitors, such as Makeup line Benefit Cosmetics and Skincare brand iiaa, whose presence at the show was very well received. “The show was busy with serious buyers and we will most definitely be back next year,” said iiaa Sales Director Louisa Webb. NAILED IT, MADE UP The heat was on as the Irish Nail Championships saw a number of entries battling it out over the two days of competition. Ilona Karavantseva was the star of the event, collecting the coveted trophies for International Nail Art Master by winning Photographic Nail Art, Showcase Nail Art and One Stroke Nail Art categories. The Warpaint Make-Up competition returned with the addition of a new category – The College Cup – won by The Makeup Crew with overall student winner, Emma McQuaid. The cream of the MUA crop gathered on Monday 6 October to show off their skills and made this year’s competition a huge success.

A number of machine brands were showcasing their latest technologies to the Irish crowd. Big machine brands exhibiting included Caci Ireland, EV Laser and Teckno Surgical Launches in nails were a popular draw for visitors over the two days, and the top brands, including, OPI, Shellac, Nail Harmony, and Jessica, showed off their latest colours and Christmas collections had the salon owners and therapists spending. “We have been able to sell products at a much higher price, people are spending more – we’ve had a really strong first day,” said John O’Sullivan from Young Nails Ireland. Waxing brands also saw sales soar, with Lycon Director, Maria Londaro, reporting a sell-out on the Rosette wax for the first time ever. “People were more business savvy this year and were here to buy in bulk,” she added.

Intuitive and user friendly, the app enables users to upload evidence from their device to their file store thus streamlining paperwork and administration time. Learners can also take photos or videos on their device to evidence work as well as being able to view their qualification structure and progress with the ability to have on-line discussions with assessors.
