CELEBRATING THE BEST OF IRISH HAIRDRESSING Sunday 29th March saw one of the biggest events in the Irish hairdressing calendar with the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards. The crème de la crème of the industry descended on the RDS in Dublin to celebrate an incredible year in Irish hairdressing, while networking with their peers and enjoying a trend show.

The 350-strong crowd were treated to an 'Essential Looks' show from Schwarzkopf Professional, where ambassadors Andy Smith, Charlie Taylor and Kevin Kahan presented the three key spring/summer trends, before celebrity presenter, Lorraine Keane kicked off proceedings. Sean Taaffe, (pictured above) winner of three awards including: National Salon of the Year 2014/2015 said of the event: “Wow! What a day! We have 50 staff across our salons so this isn’t just for us as the owners, this is for them. EXPOSURE FOR EXPOSED TAN Exposed Tan has seen a fair bit of exposure over the past few weeks. It just goes to show that celebs will always opt for professional tans! At the recent VIP Style Awards Pippa O’Connor, one of Ireland’s leading models and fashion, beauty and style bloggers was awarded Most Stylish Woman 2015, and accepted her honour while wearing Exposed Tan. She is not the only famous Irish name who has been spotted using Exposed Tan in the last month. Others include Aoibhinn McGinnity, and former Miss Ireland and face of Newbridge Silver, Aoife Walsh and B&INTM’s Holly Carpenter.

At the start of the process an AHA peel is applied to break up dead skin cells and polish the skin.

Then depending on each individual clients needs, there is a choice of three serums for pinpointing action: 'Fresh' for younger skin, packed with Amino Acids, Vitamins & Q10 a perfect complement to a daily skincare regime; 'Pure' with added extracts from Soybean & Yam roots and is best used for recovering dull, tired and dehydrated and congested skin; 'Meso Med' contains Hylauronic Acids and peptides to reduce fine line and wrinkles and helps stimulate the bodys own collagen production.

UP TO MY EYES Brow Arch expert Elaine McParland (nominated as Best Brow Artist in the Image Business of Beauty Awards 2015) introduced the technique of 'Embrowdery' into Ireland in Jan 2013 and has transformed the brows of over 2,000 ladies here since.

Elaine recognised a real opportunity to provide an eyebrow treatment that was more semi-permanent than tinting, but not as severe as traditional tattooing. She embarked on an eyebrow treatment ­seeking mission to Hong Kong in Oct 2012. All of her Facebook followers will remember her daily reports as they were kept up­-to-­date on her timeline as she wandered around one of the world's biggest beauty forums. “Asian therapists are much better at this kind of thing,” explains Elaine. Over the years there have been many types of semi-permanent brow techniques used in Asia. Some of these techniques include micro-blading and embroidery and in recent years the most up-­to-­date and innovative technique in Singapore and Malaysia has been eyebrow cloning, AKA Embrowdery.

Elaine explains the difference: “The basic difference is that with Embrowdery the therapist lightly inserts pigment by “plucking up”the skin in a forward motion as opposed to cutting and pressing pigment into the skin in a downward motion as in micro­ blading and embroidery. This technique guarantees a finer hair­like stroke that is more realistic looking and definitely not as thick as other methods. This very skilled technique is performed on the skin three times over a two-month period. Embrowdery offers the client a choice – if they choose not to go ahead with the second or third treatment the embrowdery strokes will just fade away.

Only a small amount of pigment is applied each time which gives the client a more natural looking day brow and helps us determine how the colour tone is working with the skin. Majella O'Donnell, pictured above, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. During chemotherapy she lost eyebrow and lash hair.

Don’t Diss Jennifer Rock, Business Development Manager at Renaissance Skincare, looks at perhaps the too transient world of beauty trends Within the past few years words such as ‘results’, ‘express treatments’, etc. are the words of choice in our industry, translating to the fact that clients are typically demanding rapid treatments with immediate and measurable differences.

It’s a craze that has to be admired within our sector; the fact that suddenly buzz words, techniques, products, new ingredients and protocols that weren’t around a year before become set in stone overnight. It’s fast-paced but ensures that we don’t remain stagnant in our therapies - unless we foolishly chose to.

We are constantly advancing, re-training, evolving and remodelling ourselves to coincide with the latest trends and technology. Opting to remain ‘old school’ is not always the best foot forward for any successful business in such a fast-paced industry.

However, there is a difference between remaining stationary and neglecting the more traditional, well-established core and traditional methods within skincare.

As humans, we become easily distracted by new innovative approaches, however, the concepts that lead to such developments still stand the test of time and ultimately should be at the ‘nucleus’ of skin philosophy.

I often overhear many therapists disrespect the original professional product lines, the relaxation massage ‘hands-on’ facials, etc. Many will often and openly peer down their nose in dismay at the notion that not all clients will opt to receive acids, peels, lasers, currents and so forth. Instead, they select and prefer peace and tranquillity, time to breath, a non-whirlwind on/off bed treatment; seeking physical touch with therapeutic benefits, well-deserved respite for the whole body, mind, soul and skin.

The reality is that there is a demographic for both treatments. Each has their own unique selling point, each deserve time and focus from salon owners. In a time when clinics are more widespread, don’t alienate those clients who wish for holistic ‘tried and tested’ or celebrated ranges, and treat him/her to the full, comprehensive experience.

Stress, agreeably, is the number one free radical we all tend to be exposed to on a daily basis.

it could provide antioxidant protection but a homeostasis approach of contact and simple client care could make an impact instantly.

From a skin perspective, stress triggers many inflammatory, bacterial free radical concerns so from a skin nerd aspect, manual massage in classical skincare unquestionably carries its weight in gold. Lymphatic, circulatory and the nervous systems will thank you: muscle tone, facial fatigue, toxin release, drainage, sinus issues can be alleviated - all while inducing endorphins to boost moral, confidence and self-worth.

The numbers of cosmeceutical clinics are increasing daily. Dryness, skin shedding, erythema and irritation are temporary contraactions that occur from more advanced treatments. While many clients are content to plough through, there is a lot to be said for a product range that has a main goal of not necessarily repairing DNA, but to act as a comforting, nourishing, hydrating balm to restore ceramide levels and the skin's protective layer. This could instantly pacify such a reactive skin. It could cross promote to other treatments, reintroducing the power of aroma within a product and increasing retail sales.

So instead of adopting the new, and abandoning the not so new, perhaps we would be wiser to refresh our gra for the traditional and interlink it alongside our fast track brands - causing a more holistic well-informed broad spectrum approach to skin recommendations.

Bodyifing As part of our ever-popular BPI Voices series our Editor Lucy Earley chats to Dympna Fitzgerald of Totalcare.ie 1. Totalcare’s ethos and your main goal in life is restoring the beauty of your clients’ clients. How do you set about this with the salon equipment you distribute?

Beauty for me means 'from within', but when the outside is suffering that’s where I can help! Clients suffering from problems such as excessive hair growth, skin imperfections - e.g. skin tags, broken capillaries raised angionma, milia around the delicate eye areas (and even children can suffer from this) and acne. I specialise in anti-ageing, body sculpturing, excess body skin and lymphatic drainage. Treatments that combat all of the above and more are what tick my boxes, and have made me search worldwide to offer solutions to my clients.

I have achieved all the necessary accreditations to teach theses techniques to other beauty professionals.

Most of this training has been done in Canada. The process of dealing with body and facial concerns often eventually requires a semi-medical approach to resolving their issues. Once resolved, it then allows their true beauty to transform into confident (loyal) clients.

2. Why invest in salon equipment?

By not investing in excellent equipment you are limiting yourself to the low turnover and limited profitability in your business. My policy is 'invest in the best'.

I encourage therapists to research before they purchase. For instance, study fact sheets (manufacturers are obliged to inform you of the power ability safety, etc.) of the equipment they sell. Look for FDA standards in the exact category that the machine is being sold in for approval; ask questions and look for referrals from other salon owners.

Specialising in one area of expertise should guarantee you constant flow and great financial rewards.

3. Cheap knock-offs can sometimes come on the market, how dangerous are they?

Cheap...oh God, the word sends shivers down my spine! Please choose quality - therapists - quality.

I have come across scary stories over the years of garden spray guns for painting fences being used for spray tans, hand-held retail devices being passed off as microdermabrasion and many more. And fundamentally, these kind of horror stories do deep 34•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

structural damage to our industry. If we want to give our profession the quality it deserves then invest in quality and book training by a qualified tutor.

4. We hear you have a new training initiative, it sounds exciting, tell me more?

My favourite topic! I am delighted to announce Europe's first online electrolysis course to bring your career to a new level right here in Ireland.

BPI is delighted to announce that world famous MUA, Maria Malone Guerbaa is joining us as a contributor! Maria will advise on competition tips to keep you on your toes! Here’s her story so far: “I’m originally from Limerick but I'm currently living in London. I've always had a deep passion for art, make-up and FX. Movies were my huge inspiration growing up in Limerick and so was my mum!

My mother is an oil painter and I grew up watching her work, smelling the paint and I enjoyed a very colourful and loving home.

I used pencil and charcoal to sketch, and I was always fascinated with portraits! I left for London and trained for TV, theatre and film. I worked in each field and found it very rewarding. My first time trying facepaint was at my children's school! I was smitten and hooked. I tried to paint on myself and I found my art flow through!

I became popular on social media sites and this led to newspapers, TV and great offers. One of my favourite things to do at the moment is to teach my technique to students. It's been a huge hit.

Recently, I had the huge honour to be one of the judges at the Vtct All- Ireland MUA Championships! This was so humbling and full of meaning for me! To come home and see my fellow artists and watch their work. It was sensational. The talent and passion was in full flow.

I'm delighted to see how far body art has come and I hope we can keep the passion going and see this industry blossom in Ireland as it has it many countries! I'd urge everyone to take part.

The Vtct All-Ireland Championships was really great fun and fantastic for networking.”

Getting Started “If face/body painting is your thing, start out with a palette range such as Kryolan, or any high quality palette range. Go with primary colours, some nudes and browns also; you can mix and create more shades from this type of range. Let your imagination go, that would be my main advice.

Remember to always keep your kit in top condition too.

Hygiene is obviously of the utmost importance. You can create a great little money earner as a body artist. It's a booming trade increasingly. Get some insurance too. It's very cheap and it's best if you’re trading as an artist. I hope many more people will enter the Vtct All-Ireland Championships in the future and follow their ambitions, dreams and passion."

The Best Bronwyn Conroy looks at picking the very best beauty range

As with any business it is important to re-evaluate and reassess your clinic on a regular basis to determine a few crucial factors.

Where is the business coming from? What is the cash cow? What areas are weak and need concentrating on? Where would you like to see it in another year?

It’s crucial to know where the majority of the business comes from, if it is the instant treatments such as tanning, eyelashes and eyebrows, nails or the anti-ageing treatments.

If it is the facials, is it the hands on treatments or the more cosmeceutical treatments? Are the therapists retailing the products? Are you offering any machinery-based therapies?

Should you be looking at renting a treatment room to somebody who specialises in treatments you don't offer such as semi permanent make-up or injectables to generate more revenue?

Analyse the figures to determine any weak areas and to see if there is something you're presently not offering that you could introduce to increase your bottom line. No matter how great the model you are offering is -it can always be improved upon. Things get stagnant when we stop trying to better what we are already offering.

There is such an enormous variety of new innovative products and treatments to offer that it can be a minefield trying to decide which direction to go in. There are a few things to bear in mind when deciding, you need to evaluate: V How available is the product?

V Is it sold online?

V What is the company like to deal with, what are their credit terms, do they offer sufficient ongoing support?

V What is the opening order?

V What is the price point? Will it suit your clientele?

V What are the margins?

V Does the company offer marketing material?

V Is the brand unheard of/well-established/over-established?

Obviously, the most important point being that the treatments and products are effective!

Trade shows both here and abroad are still the best way of sourcing new treatments and products. They can also help to introduce you to people offering services that might complement your clinic.

The Payout Peninsula Business Services ask: What Happens if You Can’t Afford an Employee’s Redundancy Payment?

It's often been the case since the bust that the employer can’t even afford to make the redundancy payment given the financial position of the business. So what happens here?

Entitlement to Redundancy Pay An employee is entitled to redundancy pay by virtue of Schedule 3 of the Redundancy Payments Acts. If an employee is made redundant then they qualify for statutory redundancy pay if they have 104 weeks’ continuous reckonable service or more with the employer in question.

Statutory redundancy pay amounts to two weeks’ pay per each year of service, plus one bonus week. Thus, if an employee has exactly 3 years’ service they are entitled to [(3 years x 2 weeks) + 1 bonus week] = 7 weeks redundancy pay.

The weekly pay is based on the normal weekly wage earned by that employee, including commission or other varied payments, but it is subject to the statutory ceiling of €600 per week. Therefore, if the employee with 3 years’ service earned €800 a week then their statutory redundancy is capped at (7 weeks x €600) = €4200.

Inability to Pay the Redundancy Payment Given the financial climate of recent times, more and more companies are finding the need to inform their employees to claim redundancy through the Social Insurance fund. This situation arises when the company does not have enough financial means to pay the redundancy lump sum payment.

Once an employee is formally being made redundant, the employer must pay your employee the lump sum on this date.

If you do not have the financial means to pay the lump sum payment, then the employee can apply to the Department of social Protection for direct payment from the Social Insurance Fund. The employee should complete and sign the RP50 form which is still required under the Redundancy Payments Acts. The employer should also submit evidence verified by a suitable person, such as an accountant or solicitor, which verifies that the employer has an inability to pay the redundancy lump sum (e.g. an audit of accounts). The employer should state that they are unable to pay and request that the payment be made from the Social Insurance fund.

It is worth mentioning that seeking recourse under the social insurance fund, will only pay the redundancy statutory lump sum payment and not the notice period, annual leave or public holiday entitlements due to the employee on cessation of their employment.

If they do not have enough PRSI contributions you may qualify for Job Seekers Allowance which is a meanstested benefit. If a company has been liquidated or is in receivership, the completed RP50 should be sent in by the liquidator or receiver on behalf of the employees.

Salon Euro Liz McKeon’s guide to deciding on prices If you hit the right price, your clients will be happy, your profits will be higher and your bottom line will be healthy. Many salon owners make the mistake of setting up a flawed pricing structure. As a result they find themselves working very hard for so little. If you hit the right price, your clients will be happy, your profits will be higher and your bottom line will be healthy.

7 Tips in Setting Your Prices: 1. Keep your prices realistic Avoid setting your prices on ‘what every other salon is charging’.

Research your competition and see what they are charging, but do not copy their pricing structure just to charge what everybody else is charging.

2. Cover all costs Be careful of setting your prices too low, you may not be making enough revenue to cover the costs of selling the service.

3. Check your prices against inflation Inflation increases your cost of doing business, with the prices of your materials, overheads and other costs increasing. Allow your business to increase your prices at least once a year, but give your clients sufficient warning about the price increase.

4. Include the value of your time in your pricing Avoid committing the mistake of not including a salary for yourself – your time is valuable and you need to include it when calculating your prices.

5. Clients are not always looking for the lowest price Price is not always the topmost concern of clients. There are many clients who do not mind paying higher prices, particularly if they know they are purchasing exclusivity or your salon is located in a high-end or convenient location.

6. Price low, but smart A common pricing strategy for small salon owners, particularly new entrants into the sector is to price low just to get the work.

Be aware that (a) a low price may signal a low quality service. (b) it may be difficult to raise prices later on once clients are accustomed to your low prices, (c) your start-up business is yet to develop economies of scale that makes it hard to compete on price.

7. Use discounts with care Discounts are great to clear out stock that has become outdated.

Just make sure you don’t give out the wrong signal or give the impression that your business is in difficulty.

Pricing is important for several reasons – it will determine the profit margins for your salon, and in the end, your own salary!

BAAM AND LASH PERFECT TRAINING Lash Perfect offers training courses at venues throughout Ireland. These courses combine a good balance of the essential theory with the intricate practical application. These new skills are then to be practised in your own time and following the completion of a number of case studies you will receive your Lash Perfect certificate.

“Our training courses are delivered by highly skilled Beauty Therapists and Lash Perfect Professionals, who have a wealth of experience, and will provide you or your staff with skill and confidence,” says Anne Woods, MD. 1. Semi Permanent Eyelash Extension Course. The course fee is €450 including vat. This includes your starter kit (7,500 lashes approx 30 sets of extensions).

2. Express Mink Lashes. ½ day training. The course fee including a kit is €350 including vat.

5. The Hi Brow Professional Salon Workstation fits neatly onto a salon trolley or table top, providing a convenient and time efficient base from which to work. The cost of this Work Station is €495 + vat and also includes training for one Therapist.

TRAIN WITH HELEN DUNNE doTERRA is a name synonymous with quality aromatherapy and it’s one that’s respected the world over. You can now be trained in Aromatouch and doTERRA techniques by Helen Dunne of Saradune.

Helen trained 35 years ago in Bronwyn Conroy’s Beauty School. She regularly updates her skill set and knowledge and has used aromatherapy in her own life for many years. She’s a qualified Life and Business coach and a Wellness Advocate with doTERRA and teaches natural health to therapists as well as people in general.

Helen’s classes are broken into segments and all carry the Carlton Institute Certificates which are insured by AIT. “These courses can be done in segments and then fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. Students grow in different directions and specialise in what they are good at,” Helen says. “For instance some start with Manicures to make some money when they get their certs

and then develop into nail technicians. Others love eyebrows or waxing and grow in that direction. Then there are those who go the holistic route and do massage and add on Facials, indian head or hot stone.”

Sugaring Sugaring has come back after 25 years and after training with two different companies, Sukar, Alexandria and Shatis Helen teaches this every month and it is the best technique for those who cannot have waxing. “It’s very popular for that soft downy hair on the face or ingrown hairs down below. There is an increase in specialised waxing for this area as a speciality in salons and spas. The best thing is that there is no patch test necessary for sugaring,” Helen says.
