News Worthy WEXFORD TRAINEE TO REPRESENT IRELAND AT WORLDSKILLS COMPETITION

Wexford trainee, Andrea Donoghue will represent Ireland in Beauty Therapy at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in São Paulo, Brazil from the 11th – 15th August 2015. Andrea and her fellow team members were selected from the winners of the National Skills Competition Finals which were held in Cork Institute of Technology in December 2014. The Irish young people, all under 25 years, have proven expertise in their chosen field having competed against their peers to secure their places at the Competition. They will showcase their skills and talents in the areas of Aircraft Maintenance, Automobile Technology, Beauty Therapy, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Construction Metal Work, Electrical Installations, Industrial Control, Joinery, Plastering and Dry Wall Systems, Plastic Die Engineering, Plumbing and Heating, Restaurant Service and Welding. The WorldSkills Competition, which is held every two years, is the world’s largest professional education event. Approximately 1,200 competitors from 60 countries and regions will compete in almost 50 different skills and disciplines in Brazil. All competitors will demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace. Over 800 volunteers are assisting the expected 200,000 visitors and school groups.

Women’s Aid Helpline volunteers are committed and dedicated individuals whose contribution is vital to the high quality support and information provided to women experiencing domestic violence. Helpline volunteers provide support through a nonjudgmental, non-directive approach, and work from the model of self-help and mutual aid. This model of work is about empowering callers to make their own decisions rather than about “helping” them. By volunteering you will: play a key role on the Helpline which supports those experiencing abuse in Ireland today. join a team of committed and dynamic volunteers. develop an understanding of domestic violence through in-depth training and continued vital support while volunteering on the helpline. The Helpline is open 7 days a week and we are looking for volunteers to operate the ‘out of hours’ service. The required commitment for volunteers is one shift per week for a minimum of two years, following training. How did the company start? Joe and I started started out as salon owners over 10 years ago before opening our distribution business in 2011. brought some onerous challenges for sunbed operators. The Sunbed Association (TSA) works to promote good practice in our industry, as well as providing information and training for members. We have found TSA to be an invaluable support to our business and we would encourage other salon operators to join. Joe was recently appointed onto the board of TSA and can be contacted to discuss the benefits of membership. What are your plans for the future? Our own range of iXtreme sunbed equipment has achieved phenomenal growth this year and we are busy keeping up with demand. We have new models in the pipeline, with one model developed specifically for the Irish market. But we’re keeping it under wraps until the Professional Beauty show at the RDS in October!

Peel Power Jennifer Rock takes a look at the evolution of peels
Does a sour milk peel tickle your fancy? Thought not! Peels date back to the early days of civilization, it certainly is a prehistoric treatment - considering the ancient Egyptians were renowned for bathing in sour milk due its lactic acid renewing abilities; while the Romans were more comfortable treating their skin with grape skins due to the tartaric acid exfoliating benefit! Thankfully, technology has evolved tenfold since those times and we can now boast endless forms of acids and delivery methods; resulting in fully rejuvenated skin without having to smear fruit skins and curdled milk onto ourselves. The treatment aroma would be divine no doubt… In the 1990s TCAs, phenols and ablative therapies were the pinnacle. Albeit people noticed dramatic results and measurable changes to the skin, but the downtime, adverse reactions and complications were considerable and duly noted. It alienated a large population of clientele. The interesting fact is that aggressive peels - which were once widely sought after in the early noughties, now seem to be a rarity. Clinics, dermatologists and therapists alike seem to opt for a steadier more secure road to travel, choosing less invasive versions, with bundled courses to receive the exact same result with significantly less side effects. The term ‘peel’ traditionally conjures an image of a snake slithering its way out of its own body, or visualising ‘skin dandruff’ as a basic positive requirement to deem the treatment a success. This is not entirely true. Thanks to the evolution of our industry, we can now cause physical changes within the skin without having to completely remove the top layers. The industry is gearing itself more towards skin health as opposed to skin trauma, and rightfully so. Similarly, we should embrace a wider variety of ‘peeling’ agents than just AHAs and BHAs; our predecessors discovered those! Ingredients and benefits such as peptides, plant derived stem cells, botanical lightening complexes and detox complexes are all aspects worth considering. A simple glycolic peel is deemed traditionally old school. We need to progress and become more diverse in how we tackle skin problems. Peeling alone is a quick fix solution - but is not necessarily the 16•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND
only solution. We should aim to boost our peels, make them more specific to the skin that has presented itself. No two clients should ever be treated the same; equally one client should not be treated the same way twice. Our skin concerns change minute to minute, emotion to emotion, season to season, trauma to trauma. Ideally, we would love to tailor make every treatment we perform, as this will boost our client satisfaction rate, return rate, treatment numbers and indeed retail. In theory, we should be able to enhance any given clinical proceedings with hydrating, lightening, antioxidant protection, lightening / brightening additives to truly guarantee the best possible results at that given time. So, if you are skin specific, have that inner skin nerd and wish to tackle acne, photodamage, vascular, thickened skin ‘head on’ - research the couture nature of the brand, is it a ‘one size fits all’ method which pigeon holes many skins and results, or are you in control and can add flavour and spice when needed? Also, be aware that statistically in Ireland what clients seem to be preferring is a hybrid facial concept… a blend of half peel / half facial – a hybrid facial! The peel aspect creates the channels to drive actives into the skin while leaving with that red carpet glow and no erythema or shedding. If it’s good enough for Hollywood - ‘tis good enough for us!

An Eminent World We take a look at renowned skincare brand Éminence, which is distributed in Ireland by Anne McDevitt Ltd. Éminence is a company steeped in history and family. In 1996, Boldijarre Koronczay left Hungary with his brother Attila, to seek his fortune in North America as an aesthetician. He brought with him homemade skincare products his mother had worked with and handed down to him as part of their family tradition. Cutting Trends Autumn/winter will see a move towards a 70s influence of soft, rounded fringes. Hair will be kept mid-length and less polished - compared to the harshness of the long bob we have seen rise in popularity this year. Colour Trends Balayage is still very present, but with a much more subtle take; using half shades in the difference and the move away from a two-tone technique. Blondes are bold, opting for a full bleach look. The addition of beautiful silvery grey tones to blonde hair makes more of a statement then your everyday highlights. Clients are no longer afraid to experiment with their colour! Styling Trends Styling will be kept to a minimum. It’s all about using the right products and keeping your hair in really good condition which in turn makes it easy to manage. Our team are all raving about the new hair care brand Rahua® (pronounced ra-wa), which Dylan Bradshaw stocks exclusively in Ireland. The main ingredient, found in the Amazon rain forest is the Rahua® (ra-wa) nut. This is a huge trend for a/w. Team this with an easy winged smudged kohl pencil liner. Great for both day and night looks. Brows are very important. What I’m finding people are embracing more is the natural brow. No more 90s thin brows in sight. Chanel both thickened and darkened the brows for their show teamed with statement white nails with black tips. Although, if you’re not feeling too brave in the brow department just try a tinted brow set to sculpt and shape. Always follow your own natural shape as a guide. We all love to focus on the eyes. Try a soft stain with a matte neutral shade all over the lid and blend with a fluff brush, very easy and also very long wearing (and weather proof). Pop on a black liner and smudge under the eye to turn this into an edgy night time look. For a night out, metallic shades are fun and more eye-catching. Versace used a bright neutral green with a gold undertone, perfect for A/W teamed with perfect dewy skin and groomed brows.

How did you start out in beauty? From a young age I always wanted to go to beauty school, so I enrolled in the Bronywn Conroy Beauty School when I was 18. I loved every second of it there. What‘s your favourite beauty discipline? My first love in beauty is waxing and I learnt that from very early on. Waxing practical day was my favourite. To this day most of my clientele would be for waxing. Can you think back to that run up to that opening month? Was it stressful? I was so excited in the run up to the opening day. I was apprehensive as opening my own salon at the age of 25 made me nervous that I would not be taken seriously by both staff and clients. There were a few hiccups along the way - but thankfully everything went well and due to my professional work ethic I had no problems with being taken seriously. What advice would you give yourself looking back on that opening stage of the business? Stop worrying so much; stop worrying what everyone else is doing and what they think. Have faith in yourself and believe that you are good enough. With a lot of hard work and dedication everything will work out and be fantastic. work with impacted your business? Choosing brands and people massively impacted my business. It sets a tone for the salon. I choose to work with like-minded people who are highly motivated and as passionate as I am. Equally, I only take on brands I believe in and that I think are the best on the market. I am obsessed with the brands we have here in the salon. My clients deserve the best and with the brands that we use, they walk away with the best results. What has been a particular high and low? My high is every day, just walking into a salon I have put everything into for the last three years. Watching it grow and grow from strength to strength. That in itself is a high every day. I wouldn’t have many low points but one is that there are definitely not enough hours in the day! What‘s next for Couture Beauty? I want Couture Beauty to be a well known salon in Dublin with a great reputation. Maybe another salon one day? I actively sought out a reputable academy to train in and felt Avant Garde Make Up Academy & Studio in Drogheda was the perfect choice. In the Academy’s capable hands I studied everything from professional contouring to black and white photographic make-up to creating really edgy looks for high fashion editorial images. I felt that my confidence grew during my time there and I’ve a lot of faith in what I can achieve. I successfully completed my course with the highest level in the Pro Advanced Artistry Course with a Distinction. Also during this time I entered the Annual “Warpaint” competition and “VTCT All-Ireland MUA Championships 2015”, coming a respectable 1st and a close 2nd in both competitions overall. I’ve gone on to do photo shoots with a mixture of looks from casual to modern to underwater glamour. I hope to continue to grow from doing these photo shoots regularly and I’m now frequently asked to make up some of Ireland’s Famous faces. Retain-It-All Bronwyn Conroy examines the wonder ingredient that is Retinol Go to: www.beautybybronwyn.com There is no doubting that Retinol, Retinoic Acid and Retinyl Pamitate are among the most widely used active ingredients in skincare ranges today - but what are they, what is the difference between them, what do they do and who should be using them? Retinol is the whole Vitamin A molecule and therefore just a fancy name for Vitamin A. Retinol is not Retinoic Acid, your skin has to do some work to convert Retinol into Retinoic Acid. Retinol is more gentle than Retinoic aid; biochemically it does the same thing it just takes longer to see the results. Retinyl palmitate is the weakest of the three and therefore the most gentle and the most readily available in skincare creams (but it is still very effective). Retinoids help bring the skin back to a normal ph. They make the skin look smoother, reduce pore size, improve wrinkles, resurface, rejuvenate and generate collagen production. Most doctors strongly encourage the use of retinoids. Prescription formulas contain Retinoic Acid, which is the magic ingredient that fights visible ageing, non-prescription alternatives need to be converted into Retinoic Acid by the skin at a cellular level. Retinoic Acid appears to provide a better shot at eliminating fine lines and reducing wrinkles than even the best Retinol formulations.
To determine the type of Retinoid you should be using you need to take a few factors into consideration. V Skin type V Skin condition V Your age V Reasons for use (acne, anti-ageing) All of these factors determine what your skin needs and can tolerate. Generally, you want to use the Retinoid that gives the best result and the least irritation. When starting on retinoids you can start at the weakest level, Retinyl Palmitate, then increase up to Retinol and eventually to Retinoic Acid - if the skin is tolerating it well. Retinoids can cause a skin reaction of redness and peeling, after 2 or 3 weeks your skin should become accustomed to them. Obviously, the stronger the Retinoid the greater the reaction. Retinoic Acid takes an average of 12 weeks to produce noticeable changes in the skin and will significantly improve the skin over a year. Retinol products have fewer side effects than Retinoic Acid and over time will produce similar results. To be effective, a Retinol cream should probably contain a minimum of 0.2% Retinol. It is important to know the concentration as well as the type of Retinol used. Be careful if the concentration is not listed - as it is probably very low, especially if it is near the end of the listed ingredients.

We all use so much technology these days from SMS to Email, Facebook Twitter and LinkedIn… but nothing beats a conversation on the telephone, except perhaps a face-toface meeting! When in the hands of an image-conscious professional, the telephone can be the best form of communication. But sometimes telephone skills are lacking. Make a few small changes though, and they can make a big difference: 1. Always answer the phone with a smile. It can be ‘heard’ by the caller. Remember, being kind and polite goes a long way. 2. If you are diverting your business phone, remember to check your environment when you make a call. If you are in the street, move away from the pneumatic drill, or building sounding its intruder alarm. If you are inside, is the radio or television blaring away in the background? Background noise can be distracting and is unprofessional. 3. Try and use “How may I help you” rather than “how can I help”. Sometimes ‘can’ is misunderstood or said in such a tone of voice that it comes across negatively. 4. Always speak clearly and slowly when identifying yourself, especially if you are prone to speaking quickly or if you have a broad accent. Do be prepared to spell difficult names if necessary (without a sigh!). The phonetic alphabet is useful – A = Alpha, B = Bravo etc. 5. If you have to use a speakerphone (and if you can avoid it, please do!) remember to: a) Let the caller know they are on speaker. b) Identify everyone in the room. c) Make the purpose of them being in the room clear. Finally, always make sure to have a pen and paper at hand and, if you’ve taken a message for a colleague, please remember to pass it on!

The Veil Peninsula Business Services looks at the issue of religious garments and jewellery at work A recent decision of the US Supreme Court has found that Abercrombie & Fitch had discriminated against a job applicant by refusing to hire her on the basis that her head scarf or “hijab” clashed with its “classic East Coast collegiate style” dress code. This high profile case has led to a number of questions from Irish based employers on the issue of employees wearing religious garments and jewellery to work. The Abercrombie issue arose after a job applicant wore her hijab to an interview which the interviewer assumed the applicant wore for religious reasons. Staff members in that company were advised not to ask applicants about their religion. The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claimed that in not asking, the company had violated equality guidelines and essentially created a loophole allowing for religious discrimination. In an 8-1 vote, The Supreme Court ruled that Abercrombie should have asked the applicant or at least told her of the ban so she had an opportunity to volunteer the information at which point the company and the applicant could have discussed how the headscarf might be accommodated in the workplace. What’s the Position in Ireland? Cases of discrimination or unfair dismissal on the grounds of the wearing religious clothing are quite rare in Ireland and as such there is no precedent or case law to highlight what way the Irish courts or tribunals view this matter. The Employment Equality Acts do specifically state that discrimination on the grounds of religion is prohibited and one can safely assert that the wearing of religious garments or jewellery would come under this definition. Therefore, if an employer were to forbid the wearing of religious garments then the employer would be required to objectively justify the reasons behind that rule. The UK perspective Given the lack of Irish cases in this area, it is quite useful to look at how the matter has been addressed in the UK. In the case of Azmi -v- Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council [2007] IRLR 434, the UK EAT considered the fairness of a dismissal of British Muslim teacher won the basis she refused to remove her religious veil (or ‘niqab’) in the presence of male colleagues. The school argued that the veil meant that children could not respond effectively to her teaching. The UK EAT found that she had not been discriminated against on the religious ground on the basis that removing the veil was necessary for her to perform her teaching job effectively and also the EAT were satisfied that a non-Muslim person would have been similarly instructed to remove a veil from their face had they worn one also. Learning points It is difficult to determine with any great certainty what an Irish tribunal would determine if faced with a similar scenario. In the US, Abercrombie were deemed to have discriminated
against a job applicant on the basis that the company had a positive duty under US law to reasonably accommodate religious practices. In the UK, however, it was found that the school had not discriminated against an employee for demanding she remove her veil as the school would have applied this policy rigidly to every job applicant and employee, irrespective of religion. However, these two cases do provide some useful guidance for employers in Ireland if considering a ban on certain garments. If an employer was to impose a dress code, they would have to justify the reason for doing so and make sure that they are not indirectly discriminating against an employee. The following reasons might be able to justify such a policy: V The impact such garments have on an employee’s ability to perform their work duties. V Any health and safety risk associated with such garments. V Any industry rules in terms of protective equipment. For example, in the UK Azmi case, the decision to dismiss was justified as it was concluded that the face-veil was obstructing the employee’s ability to communicate effectively with students and therefore inhibited her abilities to perform her duties appropriately. However, in the Abercrombie case in the US, there was no indication that the wearing of the headscarf would inhibit job performance as a sales assistant. Therefore, an employer will need a justifiable reason connected to a real business need, a genuine role requirement, or a health and safety requirement. Lesson plans are used to help you plan your classes and provide structure for what you intend to teach. In other words, they provide a map for where you want to go and how you are going to get there. They should also highlight what learners will know, or be able to do, at the end of the class. But most importantly – try to keep them simple - otherwise you will get bogged down in minute detail. What to Include In Your Lesson Plan The lesson plan might include some of the following details: V Date, time, duration of class V Aim/s of session V Learner outcomes V Teacher activities and timings V Learner activities and timings V Resources needed V Methods for checking learner understanding and outcomes How Much Detail in the Lesson Plan? There is some debate as to how much detail you should include in your class plans, with some educators suggesting detailed timings for every part of the class. This might be helpful starting off as a trainer as you will need to manage your time carefully. But, as you gain experience you might find micro-managing the time somewhat restrictive and distracting from the core function of teaching.

Structuring Your Class Plans There is a simple three-phase structure you can apply to your class plans. Think of them in terms of: V Start V Middle V End The start may include elements such as: V Greetings/Introductions V Outlining aims and outcomes for the class V Recapping of previous class V Starting a discussion by checking for prior knowledge of subject The middle could include elements such as: V Delivery of the main content V Reinforcement of key information V Periodically checking for understanding The end may include elements such as: V Recapping and checking for learner outcomes and understanding V Questions, answers or feedback V Allocation of home studies and or preparations for next class Devising lesson plans is a key skill in teaching and one you will need to develop. You may initially find it time consuming but it will become second nature as you progress through your teaching career. And remember – keep them simple.
