Out of Mind Skincare expert Jennifer Rock examines the Mind / Skin Connection

Eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, alopecia acne, cold sores - these are all common skin conditions or ailments that are present on the skin’s surface that we are unfortunately growing to accept as the 'norm'.

The goal of a skin therapist is to address the problem and find the cause. However, what if the root of the problem is deep-rooted in the psyche and not within the epidermis and dermis?

Stress Five letters that stand solid and are used widely in day-to-day life. And it has much to answer for. The stress we endure packs a punch. This infamous chemical response impacts so many organs within the body - the skins response at least isn‘t as silent as others.

The link between skin and its response to the emotional well that is our brain is a science in its own right named ‘psychodermatology’. This studies the direct correlation between the skin and the emotive part of our brain.

It involves addressing the skin in a more holistic approach, as opposed to just prescribing steroids, antibiotics and so forth. It usually involves referrals to counselling and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and relaxation therapy is considered vital to truly challenge the cause of the visible / physical condition (acne for example).

On a physical level nerve endings are connected to the skin as it wraps around organs - so emotions stimulate these pathways; similar to how nerves can irritate and exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms or how hypertension (high blood pressure) can bother organs of the body.

Acne and stress seem to go hand in hand.

It‘s almost a given - why? We all have a neuropeptide in the skin named Substance P this is triggered by an influx of cortisol levels.

Which in turn, dictates the oil production within our skin. Thus the increase of adult acne as stress isn‘t satisfied targeting teenagers alone!

The skin is an organ and stress affects all organs accordingly . There is a theory named 'target organ theory'. This concept states that every persons has an organ their own body attacks or subconsciously uses as a channel for stress. For some it may be the head resulting in migraines. resulting in IBS. But for many it is the skin.

Will peels, IPL, needling or fillers address this condition? Unfortunately not long-term. While one may feel instantly better - the underlying stress is still present. The Edge BPI chatted to Tina Buckley, Sales Manager, Graham Anthony Distribution Ltd Graham Anthony Distribution Ltd. is a well-respected and popular distributor to beauty salons and spas in Ireland; with that in mind - how long does it take you to decide on taking on a new product range?

We study what salons are looking for; we ask them what they need and we carry out market research on what therapists and the public want. It took us a year to decide on which peel brand we would take on. We met a lot of brands and, for example, Alpha-H stood out for many reasons, the history of the brand was important, the results and media activity around the world, especially the UK - one of the largest beauty markets in the world. The pricing was competitive for treatments, starting at €6 and the retail line has a cult following with the Liquid Gold selling 1 every 30 seconds.

What is the general trend in skincare that you know is the most important from client feedback? Ageing, slackening skin, radiance - or all of these issue?

I think we can nearly break it down into two types of clients, people who wanted to be pampered; love the smells, the relaxation and the feel good factor - and then you have people that want results and to see a difference in their skin. As a company we have a range of brands for Salons and Spas to choose from which suit all clients and they all work very well together.

What’s your number one piece of advice to a therapist who’s introducing a new range?

Training is the key - they have to feel so confident about the brand that when they are speaking about it they show their knowledge; choose the key benefits, show their passion, ask clients the correct questions so they are answering the needs of the client. They should give the product to the client and let her / him hold it and try it. If they do this, it won’t feel like selling.

Can therapists test out products with you before they decide on definitely buying into a range?

Yes, we want the therapists to try the products; have a facial and experience the brand. They will then be able to recommend the brand more confidently to their clients.

Being Constructive Liz McKeon addresses the issue of the Power of Constructive Feedback Knowing how to give constructive feedback is one of the most important managerial skills to master. Do you know how to give feedback so that the other person: V Wants to hear it?

V Can understand and act on it?

V Doesn’t get defensive, and V Respects your opinion Unclear feedback fosters a sense of helplessness and hopelessness in the salon, because it offers no clues about how to improve and therapists then become totally unmotivated. Poorly thought through feedback diminishes your credibility as a supervisor and inaccurate feedback is guaranteed to lead to resentment.

The guidelines for giving constructive feedback fall into four categories: content, manner, timing and frequency.

V Content is what you say.

In your first sentence, identify the topic the feedback is about and provide specifics about what occurred.

V Manner is how you convey the constructive feedback – how you say something often carries more weight that what you have to say.

State observations, not interpretations, be direct, sincere and avoid giving mixed messages.

V Timing – feedback is meant to be given as close as possible to when the performance incident

occurs, so that events are fresh in everyone’s mind.

V Frequency – use constructive feedback regularly to acknowledge real performance. Catch and respond to therapists doing the job right just as much as you catch and respond to them doing something not quite right.

Constructive feedback increases self-awareness, offers options and can motivate. Remember, it does not mean only giving positive feedback – feedback about poor performance, given skilfully, can be equally useful and important, as an aid to developing a great team.

Don’t just be a good boss, become a great boss.

The ability to give feedback is one of the most important and difficult moments of truth that determine your effectiveness as a manager.

Did you always want to become a beauty therapist?

I gained work experience in a beauty salon while in secondary school, and soon realised that it was the profession for me. I got great satisfaction from working with clients; introducing them to new procedures and helping them feel welcome, relaxed and happy before, during and after their treatments.

Do you think the day spa format works?

Is location key?

We all live busy, stressful lives so it is vitally important to make time for ourselves when we can.

A day spa is an ideal getaway as it provides a relaxed, calming environment where clients can unwind, benefit from our therapist wealth of experience and knowledge and leave feeling refreshed and invigorated. Above all, it’s hugely important to recognise the need to make time for ourselves, look after our health and general well-being, and ultimately feel amazing, inside and out.

The Buff Day spa’s location on South King Street in Dublin's city centre is ideal as its centrality makes us accessible to a lot of people, be they city workers, visiting tourists or casual consumers. The spa is a welcome sanctuary in Ireland’s busiest city, and clients love to visit us time and time again to enjoy a relaxing treatment.

What’s your favourite product range?

Currently in the Buff Day Spa we work with three product ranges: Juliette Armand, Image and Dermalogica. The three companies feature large product ranges, all of which actively promote healthy skin care. Delaying Botox - how can a therapist help?

Step by step:

STEP 1 1. Prep the natural nail.

STEP 2 Apply a thin layer of CND Shellac base coat. Cure for 10 seconds in the CND LED Lamp.

STEP 3 Apply two thin layers of CND Shellac Nordic Lights to the entire nail. Cure each layer for one minute.

STEP 4 Using a fan brush with CND Shellac Glacial Mist apply to

2/3 of the nail angling from the extension edge towards the cuticle. Cure for one minute.

STEP 5 Repeat the same technique using a fan brush (Lecenté™) and CND Shellac Tundra applying to ½ of the nail. Cure for one minute.

“Born in 1980 in Dublin, I was one of the first Irishborn children of the Vietnamese boat people who were helped

by Irish missionaries in 1979 - I was named ‘Ailan’ after the country and town I was born in. I moved to London in 1992. It was a huge culture shock – everything was so big – but it was also a great opportunity for adventure. Art was my comfort zone and I stayed after school hours on many occasions and did extra classes in life drawing. I also enjoyed teaching the younger students the importance of art. While others left school to do ‘real’ work, I stayed on to study art, still unsure of what my future would be. Through hard work, luck and ambition I finally made a break into the make-up world, working for London Fashion Week. The meaning of make-up has never changed in my eyes. I believe that if you look good then you feel good! When you are happy with yourself it makes you smile. As a teenager battling with problem skin, my makeup was my sanctuary and gave me confidence. Make-up is fun, and confidence is beautiful. I am so thankful to be able to express my art in the form of make-up and ultimately hope others will be inspired to create, as I have.”

Aroma-ed Bronwyn Conroy looks at the benefits of aromatherapy

The Comp Our resident famous MUA, Maria Malone-Guerbaa on competitions, nerves and the finer points of the artform What’s your antidote to nerves and the possibility of getting flustered / forgetful during a competition?

My way around nerves is to think clearly, have a set look and stick to it! Nerves can still affect results I know - but I try to zone out of situations, it’s one of the only situations in life where tunnel vision is good to adopt. But also try to just enjoy the whole experience! It can be a high-pressure place but it really is the taking part, the networking, the over-all experience, etc. To win is only a bonus!

How should I choose my model?

Choosing a model would depend on the look you were going for. Body paints I always find look so much better and easier to look at when the model is very slim and small busted. And if they get into the part helps also, i.e. become the character in a way or theme. It helps if they’re confident and outgoing.

If I can prove that I use the colour wheel correctly to make the eyes pop or for cold or warm skintones will that get me extra points?

Yes, using products

correctly will get you more points. A basic understanding is vital.

And we all in this industry never stop learning as new products and techniques appear all the time. Embrace it and never assume you know everything. I always think a great basic knowledge is the best start and everything else is what you build up too. Experiment too; this brings out the creative side so much and who knows you may develop something not seen before. Always exciting!

I can’t get my blending exactly right. What tutorial or course would you recommend?

Blending is so important.

Doing a little beauty class with a well-known school will help. Just practise… practise, practise. Start with lighter shades always and build them up. That’s the basic understanding.

Research courses with great feedback and go for a class dedicated to eye looks and contouring as this is blend mania and will set you up for any other type of blending required afterwards. Final point: enjoy, embrace and support each other!

Today’s beauty industry has seen a shift towards more cosmeceutical treatments and anything that gives us a fast, instant result.

Alternative therapies such as Aromatherapy tend to be found more in spas or massage centres. The demand for Aromatherapy training has declined dramatically in recent years. This is a shame as it is a powerful treatment that delivers great results where sometimes modern medicine fails. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis benefit hugely from aromatherapy and essential oils are also used to treat migraines, menstrual irregularities, anxiety, depression, constipation - and to strengthen the immune system. I for one would like to see these treatments gaining popularity again.

What is Aromatherapy? It’s actually a form of alternative medicine that relies on the use of highly concentrated and aromatic essential oils derived from various flowers, roots, barks, branches and leaves of medicinal plants. The essential oils extracted have therapeutic properties that correct various imbalances depending on the method of use, quantity of oil and combination of oils used.

The goal of aromatherapy is to create scents by blending various essential oils that influence the brain especially the Limbic System, which is responsible for regulating emotions, behaviours and long term memory.

It is easy to underestimate how effective this treatment is but it has been used for centuries to heal various conditions. Essential oils have

the ability to penetrate into the blood stream so therefore must be used and mixed with caution. Some oils are toxic when mixed together and are also unsafe on pregnant ladies, babies, people undergoing chemotherapy and pets. For any disbelievers rub pure garlic oil into your feet and within 20 minutes or so your breath will start to smell of garlic!

We are looking towards simple chignons and 70s inspired blow-dry with hair full of volume and cascading waves framing the face.

Alternatively, hair can be pulled away from the face, keeping volume on the crown, sleek on the sides with waves through the lengths. Supermodel Gigi Hadid rocked this look recently on the red carpet at the MTV Music Awards.

How to achieve the look: 1. Apply mousse to towel dried hair and blow dry hair off the face - pay special attention to the crown of the head giving it plenty of body with a ceramic db Squared styling brush.

2. Apply styling cream to the sides of the hair and comb into place with a paddle brush remember a little product goes a long way.

3. A straightening iron can be used to create waves through the lengths of the hair; this is a more free flowing look and not as severe as the catwalk style slicked hair we have seen.

4. Finally apply hairspray liberally to hold the

final look in place.

Time Team Peninsula Business Services take a look at part-time workers ahead of a busy winter season Part-time workers fall under atypical employment which mainly consist of any employment which is not ‘normal’ or ‘standard’ in nature. Hence, part-time workers are distinct from full-time employees. It is vital to be up to date on the protections provided to part-time workers as they are formed from the European Directive 97/81 to prevent abusive conditions of employment for atypical workers.

The difficulty employees have with working fewer hours increased sharply over 2009-2014 however from review of the new CSO survey this situation has eased off in the last year as contained in the CSO’s new Detailed Employment Series. Of those surveyed in part-time employment in quarter 1 of 2015, 36% stated it was due to not being able to find a full-time job versus 17.5% of those surveyed in quarter 1 of 2009. However, from quarter 1 of 2014 to quarter 1 of 2015 this rate decreased by 9% or 16,100 persons. As such with employees accepting part-time work due to being unable to secure full time work it is important to consider the rights and entitlements of part-time employees in comparison to full time employees.

The Protection of Employees (Part-Time Work) Act 2001 The Part-Time workers Act, 2001 applies to those working under a contract of employment, individuals employed through an employment agency and someone sharing a job with another person. The Protection of Employees (Part-Time Work) Act 2001 aims to: V Ensure that a part-time employee cannot be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time employee regarding conditions of employment V Ensure that all employee protection legislation applies to a part-time employee in the same manner as it already applies to a full-time employee. Any qualifying conditions (with the exception of any hours thresholds) that apply to a full-time employee in any of that legislation also apply to a part-time employee V Enhance the quality of part-time work V Facilitate the development of part-time work on a voluntary basis and to contribute to the flexible organisation of working time in a way that takes account of the needs of employers and workers.

The core non-discrimination rule is that “part-time workers shall not be treated in a less favourable manner than comparable fulltime workers solely because they work part-time unless different treatment is justified on objective grounds” (Peers, 2013, p. 31).

Employers will not be considered to have penalised a part-time employee in certain circumstances. For example, in relation to a request by the employer that the employee transfers from fulltime work to part-time work (or vice versa) when the following conditions are met: V The employer must have substantial grounds both to justify the making of the request and for taking any action after the employee’s refusal to transfer from full-time work to part-time work or vice versa 58•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

V The taking of the action is in accordance with the employee’s contract of employment and the provisions of employment rights legislation An objective justification may be a genuine need that is appropriate for the objective pursued and is necessary for that purpose.

Case Law In the case of Mullaney v 2 Bros PTD 066 [2006], full-time employees were given two days off during the Christmas period for Christmas shopping. Part-time workers were given no such days off to pursue their Christmas shopping. In that situation, the part-time workers successfully showed they were treated less favourably in comparison to full-time workers and there was no objective justification for the unfavourable treatment. In this case the employees should have received a pro rata entitlement of this time off like annual leave to ensure they are not being treated less favourably.

Conclusion Redress for unfavourable treatment under the Act includes reinstatement, re-engagement or direct compliance with Section 9, or awarded compensation for up to two years pay with the right to appeal to the Labour Court. Therefore it is important when considering any action or benefits with your employees that you consider both full-time and part-time employees and ensure that any benefits received are done so on a pro rata basis.

The Philosophy

Derek O’Kelly, author of Ireland’s first teacher training book for the hair and beauty industry talks about developing a teaching philosophy.

Developing a Teaching Philosophy Behavioural experts tell us that those who understand themselves better are more likely to have successful careers. In other words, the more you know about yourself, the more likely you are to succeed. So why should you need to know more about yourself ? Well, in the context of teaching, every aspect of your emotional and behavioural capabilities will be tested, as will your beliefs, your values and attitudes. Truly understanding yourself will prepare you mentally and emotionally for your teaching journey, and this can be achieved by developing a teaching philosophy.

A Good Starting Point A good starting point on your journey to developing a teaching philosophy is to identify the internal drivers inspiring your career as a teacher or trainer. Many educationalists believe these include your motivations and beliefs about teaching. This could include your teaching approaches and how you see the teacher/ learner relationship working. Understanding all of these should help you to shape your teaching philosophy, which in turn will help guide you in areas such as class plans, your interactions with learners and classroom management. Gaining a greater understanding of yourself will bring clarity to your teaching and help drive you forward.

How To Start Developing a teaching philosophy will be very helpful in laying the foundations for many aspects of your teaching career. You could start by writing a simple statement about your motivations for wanting to teach, and some bullet points of your beliefs and approaches to teaching and learning. For example: Statement about motivations “My motivations for wanting to teach stem from my passion for my subject and wanting to help others learn and develop” My beliefs about teaching are: V Adults should be engaged in the learning process V A positive learning environment should be established that fosters mutual respect V Different learning needs and styles should be catered for My approaches to teaching would be: V To establish a positive learning environment V To engage the learners through discussion, questioning and group work V To cater for different learning styles by using a variety of teaching methods.

Developing a teaching philosophy may not happen overnight, but it will bring clarity to your efforts and drive your teaching career forward.
