ALEC KURUCZ SHOWCASES ECURI STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY Alec Kurucz of Ecuri recently gave an in-depth lecture on Ecuri Stem Cell Technology to PMUs across the world. Stem cells are the new rage in Biotechnology and are being studied as treatments and cures for various ailments. One area where stem cells have already shown huge promise is hair loss. The Ecuri method employs a combination of stem cell technology and micropigmentation techniques. A special needle attached to micropigmentation device is used to insert stem cell preparations into the skin. These stem cell preparations activate the client's own hair growth, making it fuller, darker and thicker. Tiny hairs are applied between the existing brow hairs using a pigment. Together these techniques give the appearance of real hair. For more information go to: www.beautyboard.ie

A Renaissance With seminars taking place in January, Jennifer Rock gives us an insight to the newly launched RAI Renaissance Aesthetic Institute (RAI), is a revolutionary, nonbrand specific, Educational Centre aimed at the Aesthetic, Beauty and Holistic field. Our guarantee is to provide exceptional industry-related courses for the discerning student. kickstarting the Institute with courses that have been in high demand and have been requested by over 150 individuals from within the industry. On the evening of the 25th, we are launching the RAI concept by offering a skinorientated nutritionist talk by Elsa Jones, author of ‘Goodbye Sugar’. Topics will include: skin energy and vitality, sugar cravings and its true impact on the ageing process, antioxidants, fad diets and their effect on skin; detoxification considering the skin is a secretory organ, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, proteins and minerals role in skin health. Skin health truly does start from within. On January 26th we will offer social media and blogging advice from beauty publicity company ‘Publicity Loft’, offering advice on the Do’s and Don’ts for business and social media in the Beauty sector. They will offer a step-by-step guide on how to interact, attract and maintain the right audience, how to allow your professional personality to shine through across all platforms. The courses shall all run concurrently and typically on Sundays / Mondays or Mondays / Tuesdays in order to allow maximum possibilities of learning. Already we have names signed up from Scotland, Northern Ireland and the ROI so it is fair to say that demand is high! It is a newly-established institute, which opens its doors to all brand users, stockists and professionals alike. The vision is to have representatives from all brands to learn sideby-side, while challenging yet respecting each other's education; with a view to growing together in solidarity to raise the standard of knowledge across the board. We have approached and secured industry leaders in their chosen fields and are delighted to be in a position to have them affiliated with the RAI. The guest speakers will be Dr. Simon Ravichandran, Publicity Loft beauty PR company, Elsa Jones Nutritionist - among many more to be confirmed. It is a revolutionary concept; standards will be high, with small class number in order to guarantee quality, they will be cost effective and are promising to sell out once we launch on January 1st.

The first seminars take place on January 25th and 26th. For price enquiries please contact www.renaissance -products.com Or alternatively, contact Renaissance on +353 (0) 1 832 1412 If you have any queries regarding course topics please mail Jennifer, directly at Jennifer@ renaissanceproducts.com

Beauty Professional Voices

Dutch Courage BPI Editor, Lucy Earley chatted to Frans and Angela Beckers of Clonmel-based Beauty Products Ireland and Classic Training Academy

How did your distribution and training business start out? In 1985, we moved from the Netherlands to Ireland to start our new business, the import and distribution of beauty products for the beauty industry in Ireland. We started with Laneche Skincare products and Bentlon - top quality beauty salon equipment, manufactured by the same company in the Netherlands. Over the years we added more and more products, and, at the moment we are the distributors of the following exceptional brands: Aviva Labs Organic Spray tanning, Airbase Airbrush Make-up, Laneche Natural Skincare, Pui Pui Make-up, Combinal Eyelash/Eyebrow tints, Outback Organics Tea Tree waxing and Bentlon Salon Equipment. What is Beauty Products Ireland’s ethos? Our aim has always been to supply a range of products to beauty salons and beauty professionals that are effective, ethical, exceptional, affordable, well proven and if possible, organic and natural. This has remained our mantra since day one! The ranges and the equipment may not be the cheapest on the market, but we’re confident of the level of high quality they provide for professional salons! They will always result in return business. Who would mainly make up your students, further education, students straight from school or up-skillers? As the demand for training in beauty-related courses was growing, we decided to invest in a state of the art environmentally-friendly facility, just outside Clonmel in the idyllic settings of Kilmanahan, with a fantastic view of the surrounding mountain ranges. It's in this beautiful

building with its fantastic garden and surroundings, that in 2012 'Classic Beauty Training Academy' opened its doors for all the beauty-related trainings and courses. Our centre has 11 different rooms and a large lounge and can accommodate 20 + students for our courses. Classic Beauty Training Academy is an ITEC and CIBTAC registered school of beauty and almost all of our courses are ITEC or CIBTAC accredited, and our Centre was awarded I.T.E.C.'s 'Certificate of Excellence'.Our part-time and full-time Beauty Therapy courses are mainly filled with students straight from school, but our shorter courses such as advanced waxing, advanced make-up, micro-dermabrasion, Indian head massage, Reflexology, Aroma therapy, etc. are mostly beauticians who want to upgrade their skills. Most of our courses are ITEC and / or CIBTAC accredited. What are your future plans? In the coming years we want to concentrate on our online business. We also wish to expand to provide even more beauty-related trainings and courses. We also want to make the beauty salons aware of our Aviva Labs Organic Spray tanning products; because these products differ so much from all other available tans. Aviva Labs has its own laboratory, and was the first brand in the world to bring out both an organic and an express tan. With only 13 ingredients it dries instantly. Aviva Labs organic tan is a ‘Healthy Option’ for every salon!

C The Difference…

SALON LIABILITY INSURANCE FROM AS LITTLE AS

Bronwyn Conroy looks at the real benefits of the wonderful C We have been hearing of the benefits of Vitamin C for our skin - both internally and externally for years. Apparently, we should be ingesting 1000mgs daily to support our connective tissue and also applying Vitamin C topically to: V Increase collagen production V Reduce the appearance of skin discolorations V Strengthen skin's barrier response V Enhance skin's repair process V Reduce inflammation V Help our skin withstand exposure to uv light However, there is also a theory that most of the Vitamin C we consume is flushed away and that the Vitamin C we get in our facial products does not remain stable. So what can we do to combat this and to insure we are getting all of the known benefits of Vitamin C for our skin and health? While taking Vitamin C orally is very beneficial for

our health it is not effective at increasing the skin's concentration of Vitamin C - because its absorption is limited by active transport mechanisms in the gut. Topical antioxidants produce much higher concentrations in the skin than supplements, applying Vitamin C directly to the skin is in fact 20 times more effective than ingesting it orally. Once the cream is absorbed into the skin it cannot be rubbed or washed off. However, Vitamin C is unstable and does not last very long, it also gets oxidised when exposed to air so it must be packaged to protect it against excess light and oxygen. When the cream is contaminated it turns yellow and becomes ineffective. It is neither capable of producing collagen or preventing the formation of lines and wrinkles. So essentially if you want to reap the awards of your Vitamin C enriched creams only choose those that are packaged in opaque tubes, air restrictive bottles or pumps that help keep their ingredients stable! Without a doubt, Vitamin C is a powerful tool in your anti-ageing arsenal. Constantly replenishing our skin's Vitamin C stores will rejuvenate our skin, keeping it healthy and maintaining younger-looking skin. For best results use it as part of a routine that includes a broad spectrum sunscreen.

Bad Santa As we go into the New Year and beyond, how can you deal with the issue of Bad Debt and your business?

It’s a crippling fact of business - when you’re owed money that’s never going to come to fruition. It can be soul-destroying for small businesses in the beauty industry in Ireland. The bad debt judgements that are issued in the courts map the state of the country's economy in some respects. And in 2015 there’s been good and bad news. The bad news first, the rate of consumer debt is up. There were 1,692 consumer judgements in the courts for in the first half of this year. That’s a 6 per cent rise on 2014, and it seems that this figure rises year-on-year. The better news is that the first half of 2015 saw a marked fall in the value of commercial judgments, by 25 per cent compared with 2014. When comparing 2014 to dismal 2009 business debt judgements they have actually reduced three-fold. A little bit of good news. “Over the course of the recession years bad debts were a significant problem for small/medium 34•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

sized businesses. When a business suffers cashflow issues there is a knock-on effect for suppliers. In circumstances where a business allows a balance to accumulate with a supplier then it can have a detrimental effect when the customer is subsequently unable to pay,” says Áine Farrelly, Partner with Baker Tilly Glennon Chartered Accountants “It is very important to distinguish between customers who can't pay and people who won't pay. In circumstances where customers are having cashflow difficulties and are clearly unable to pay - then an arrangement should be reached to accept payment over time. In circumstances where a customer is unwilling to pay - then steps should be taken to address all concerns that have been raised. But a business should look to pursue them through the legal channels to recover amounts that are legitimately due to them. Be aware that non-payment of amounts due to you can have a detrimental impact on your ability to pay your suppliers!”

Community Times

Serene Times In our focus on high-quality salons BPI Editor, Lucy Earley chatted to Nuala Woulfe of The Serenity Day Spa How did you start out? I had over 12 years experience working in salons, so I decided to open my own salon in the village of Glasthule in South Co. Dublin with the intention to concentrate on health and wellness. The business took off quickly. It is an uncertain time when you start out. But I was very lucky, the phones rang and a steady flow of clients came through the doors. Clients referred friends and family. We have the best clients, who are very loyal and supportive. We started with a one-story building, which within a couple of years proved to be too small. We extended the building, but it again proved to be too small. So ten years after we opened we expanded and opened Serenity Day Spa just a little way up from the beauty salon. This building is over three times the size of the salon with three floors. It has beautiful sea views - so a lovely setting for a day spa. The Day Spa invites ladies and gents to come and simply relax and enjoy great treatments with expert staff. This year we celebrate 20 years in business. What was the recession like for you (asking that in the past tense with great hope that it‘s gone!)? I think we were very fortunate to have been well established when recession hit. Yes, of course the business slowed down but we were still kept going and we did not let any of our staff go. We continued 36•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

to concentrate on training our staff. During this time we were also appointed SkinCeuticals’ only Irish Flag Ship Clinic. This year has been a very good year for us, business is thriving. Our biggest concern now is the lack of skilled staff. What do you look for in staff members? V Personality – friendly with good people skills. Polite and professional. V Good hands for massage. V Keen interest in learning and progressing within their chosen career. V Experience in a similar environment with high standards is an advantage but not essential. Once staff have some or all of these requirements, we can teach the rest! As a salon owner why do you think professional beauty products work so well? Particularly medical grade products – cosmeceutical skincare – with active ingredients that can penetrate through the skin‘s surface to get to the dermal layer where it can make a difference. www.nualawoulfe.ie

BPI Pros

Neighbours Beauty Expert, Liz McKeon answers the important question: “My nearest competitor is offering a new treatment. Will I be left behind if I’m not offering the same thing?” Absolutely not. We are lucky to work in an industry that is diverse, fast moving and in demand. However, it is impossible to provide every service available. When you get concerned about a competitor, there are lots of other questions to ask yourself that will serve you, your business and your clients a lot better, such as what is the core service and product that I am providing? Are my sales maxed out on my full range of services? Make sure your services are up to date – and if some are falling out of fashion, take them off your treatment menu. Likewise, think about whether there are any services or product lines that you could re-launch. When it comes to new trends, it’s important to look at what’s just a fad that will be over in a few months, and what offers a real return on investment. For example, if you think offering a machinebased treatment is right for you, do your research so you can make an informed decision about the service you are introducing to your

clients. Ask yourself what budget you have for hardware, and what will fit in with your core services and products. Competition is great, because it keeps us on our toes. However, the only thing I can do about my competition is to keep an eye on them. Whereas if I stay in total control of my own business, and expand with the right services at the right time, then it doesn’t really affect me or my business when competitors offer services I don’t have.

At Giorgio Armani Linda Cantello MUA, developed a new make-up look: “Inspired by the Fil Rouge collection, I love the idea of a softly ethereal pearly grey eye with a myriad of reflexions, anchored by the newness of geranium red lashes. Worn together with a rosy, healthy summer complexion, accentuated by a pinkish blush, and finished by a softly flushed mouth,” she commented.

Hair 2016

Dylan Bradshaw Master Colourist and Educator Jenny Dawson pinpoints the styles we’ll be looking for in 2016 Natural Balayage Whilst the Balayage technique is still one of the most sought after colours, it's all about creating a much softer and natural look. We are still using our free hand techniques, but using it to create a more seamless beautiful natural colour! We also see a move away from the dramatic contrast between the roots and the ends of the hair. Clients are looking for a more softened out root, which could have been achieved naturally. Contouring We will see the use of ‘Contouring’, a word usually associated with make-up. Contouring is a very soft freehand technique used to highlight focal points of the face and haircut. You can now sculpt the face thanks to meticulously placed highlights and lowlights. Just like the make-up technique, light shades are for highlighting and darker shades are for creating a shadow effect. The best part is that it is a totally bespoke look suited to the individual which makes it unique to you. Shades/Tones - Moving away from classic highlights to create softer, natural, seamless colour. Cashmere colours very soft with a hint of tone be it cool or warm: Rich Browns/ nutmeg/ mocha/Very soft warm tones Blondes: sandy/bronze/ pearl 46•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

COLOUR TREATMENTS: I always tell my clients that in order to achieve the best and long-lasting results they must look after the condition of their hair in between salon visits and colour appointments. These are just two must-have treatments I would recommend to my clients who want to maintain the condition and quality of their hair: OLAPLEX- Our clients and colourists swear by this multi-function product. It is the go-to treatment for all of our colour team as it safe guards our colour clients hair and allows our colourists to get optimal results whilst still maintaining and improving the condition of the hair PRO-FIBRE - First of its kind, Pro-Fibre from L’Oréal is a long lasting recharging haircare programme designed for damaged/ weakened hair. Within the pro fibre range there are 3 different treatments designed to care all levels of sensitivity: Restore Revive, Reconstruct. The in-salon treatment is followed by a 4 week re-charge programme that prolongs the effect of the treatment by recharging the hair fibre. The treatment leaves hair strengthened, light weight and soft to touch.

HR

Ageing Beauty Peninsula Business Services examines the latest developments in retirement age policies The majority of employers will no doubt be aware of the developments in respect of retirement ages over the last number of years. It is no longer safe to simply have a retirement policy and enforce it slavishly; rather employers must have objective justification for the policy in the first place. In this article we look at some recent developments, including a dispute within the Government parties on future developments. Current Position in Ireland In a number of important cases the Irish High Court and the Equality Tribunal have stated that employers must, in accordance with EU rules, have objective and reasonable justification before they can enforce a retirement policy. This is because a retirement policy is inherently discriminatory on the grounds of “age”. Thus, an employer may only safely retire an employee where they (a) have a written retirement policy in the employee’s terms and conditions, and (b) have objective and reasonable justification for such a policy. What is Objective and Reasonable Justification? It’s important to be mindful that objective and reasonable justification is not a “one size fits all concept”. What might be deemed objective and reasonable justification for a retirement policy in one organisation may not be deemed objective and reasonable justification in another. Another issue is that an employer may be able to objectively and reasonably justify a retirement policy for certain categories of employee but that does not mean they could necessarily justify a policy for other categories of employee within the same organisation. In the case of Donnellan -v- Minister for Justice [2008] IEHC 467 the requirement for a Garda Commissioner to retire at 60 was allowable as it was objectively justified in order to ensure: “Motivation and dynamism through the increased prospect of promotion” within the Gardaí. In the case of Saunders -v- CHC Ireland Limited (DEC- E2011-142) it was recognised that a policy requiring a helicopter winch man to retire at 55 was objectively justified as such winch men are required to engage in search and rescue missions involving a “high level of physical capacity”. Therefore, as physical capacity “diminishes with age” it was held that this policy could be justified. As such, creating promotional opportunities and/or the health and safety risk associated with a role may justify a retirement policy. However, within the same organisations the same justification could not necessarily be used for a receptionist or administrative role, which does not carry a health and safety risk and which may be a relatively low role in the organisation’s promotional ladder. 50•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

Future Developments As it stands, there are two separate Bills being considered by the Oireachtas. The Employment Equality (Amendment) (No.2) Bill 2013 is seeking to formally introduce the requirement for “objective justification” for retirement policies. This is in keeping with the case law mentioned above and in keeping with the EU rules. However, separately and somewhat confusingly there is a second Bill called the Abolition of Mandatory Retirement Age Bill 2014 which proposes that mandatory retirement ages be abolished. In such circumstances employers would not be permitted to have compulsory retirement ages for persons willing and able to continue in their job. Therefore, the two Bills are contradicting each other as one will allow for compulsory retirement and the other will not. Conflict in the Government The Abolition of Mandatory Retirement Age Bill was proposed and put forward by Anne Ferris who is a TD from the Labour Party. Minister Aodhán Ó’Ríordáin who is also of the Labour Party has recently questioned the legal basis of this Bill, stating that it raises “serious policy issues” and “would be a radical step”. Minister Ó’Ríordáin has stated that “State intervention in private contracts to abolish on a unilateral basis the retirement arrangements entered into by the two parties would be of doubtful legality…” Conclusions As it stands, employers will need to have objective justification for any retirement policy. Having a written policy will not be sufficient unless the employer can justify why the policy exists in the first place. Going forward, it is possible that compulsory retirement policies will be abolished in their entirety. Employers are encouraged to keep a close eye on developments in this area. Education & Training

Captain, My Captain Derek O’Kelly of The Waverley Academy looks at what makes a great teacher Great teachers have attributes that make the teaching process seem effortless. These are described as the personal traits or characteristics that a teacher brings to their teaching and while there is debate among educators and psychologists as to whether attributes are inherent or can be learned, the general consensus would indicate that with knowledge, practice and experience, attributes can be learned and developed. Adult learners prefer to learn from teachers who have the ability to connect with them. In particular those who incorporate effective delivery methods that are engaging, respect individual needs and provide meaningful opportunities to learn. The following are some of the key attributes displayed by effective teachers in adult education: V Self-awareness of emotions, motivations, strengths and weaknesses. This can help with managing the stresses and anxieties that can sometimes come with teaching and will also help build on strengths and plan for development of learning. V Resilience - the ability to deal with adversity and bounce back when things are not going to plan is a vital attribute. V Ability to manage time which, in turn, can lead to good planning, organisation of teaching duties and continuous development. V A calm demeanour which can help with logical thinking, planning, coping with stressful situations, conflict resolutions and can also portray confidence and control in the classroom.

V Ability to manage and monitor their own mental and physical health. V To portray and instil confidence – Learners like to know that their teacher is in control. A confident approach by teachers can be infectious and help to instil confidence in learners. V To foster a climate of mutual respect – Adult educators who can foster a climate of mutual respect will be seen in the eyes of learners as someone who cares. V An ability to be seen as professional but approachable – Learners like to know that they are been thought by someone who is professional in their manner. V To be able to communicate effectively – Learners are motivated when communications are clear and concise from trainers. V An ability to be flexible – While teachers should encourage learners to make their best efforts it is also important to understand that adults have complicated lives that can impact on performance, attendance, and ability to complete course work. V To act in a manner that is fair and consistent V An ability to deliver content in an engaging manner – Learners like to be engaged in their learning. V To possess passion and enthusiasm – There is nothing more engaging than a trainer who is passionate and enthusiastic about the subject matter they are delivering. V An ability to cater for diverse learning needs – Learners like to be involved in their learning and so great teachers are intuitive as to the different learning needs in the classroom.

This may sound strange, but keep your exercise at a chilled out rate, don’t overdo it zealously in the summer.

Lucky Libra, well you will be in 2016. Your level-headed mindset and great social skills will pay off in the end. Don’t ignore the good asset you have in the form of a certain person; they might be young and have a little to learn but they will benefit you. Get some nice holidays in for yourself this year. You’re worth it.

TAURUS Assertiveness is something you need to work on in 2016. Although, even if you don’t people will still see you differently this year. This will be more to do with a new person in your life whom you’ll start to hang out with in late spring. The power of positive association may be good for your career and personal life, but keep a sense of your happy self.

GEMINI Focus Geminis! Being a twin often means a lack of focus and a lack of attention to detail. On the other hand, you’re wonderfully artistic and your beauty business can really benefit from a teeny, weeny bit of focus. Use your instinct in the area of love mid-year, all may not be what it seems. And, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Be careful of purple shoes...I’m sorry that I can’t explain more about that one!

CANCER Cancerians you’ve been good for a while now, but being a goody-two-shoes is not in your naughty nature - so let the hair down as you go into 2016. Reach out in your business life and be open to new opportunities. You will find a great deal of satisfaction in helping those less fortunate than yourself. Mercury is retrograde in Earth signs in 2016 meaning a little bit of planning and lots of pampering.

LEO It will definitely benefit you in your work life to get to know those around you better, be it suppliers, clients and colleagues. Don’t jump to conclusions about others. You will find yourself taking care of your health and welfare more than previous years. You can concentrate on money now, things are getting better. 2016 will be the year you’ll make your mark.

VIRGO It’s the end of the year that will shine for you as there’s a solar eclipse in Virgo in September. This will be when the major opportunties of 2016 will come to light. Don’t be afraid to change up stock or take on new employees. It will pay off. Don’t worry about personal problems that might occur at the start of the year, they will be resolved - you’re the one who’s the most worried and the least responsible.

SCORPIO Slow dwn Scorpio! You can tend to race at things. Life’s not a marathon. Break down any boundaries that have been holding your full power back, be they emotional or physically wise. You may have thought over the last while that a shadow has been following you; it’s nothing to be afraid of, quite the contrary.

SAGITTARIUS Mars will be retrograde in the spring, this means that you need to be careful in your day-to-day work, beware of making silly mistakes. Don’t forget that you’re highlyskilled at what you do, but don’t let that make you cocky. A look at emerging trends might help you with your beauty style. You can get stuck in your ways. On a positive note, your love life will take great turns for the better.

CAPRICORN Torn between two lovers, 2015 and 2016 as your year starts on the 21st of December, 2015 and this is reflected in your work alcholic nature. Take a break at some stage and recharge your batteries. You’ve got to think about the better things in life too. Take time to feel the love from those around you. Be happy!

AQUARIUS You will find yourself craving travel this year, and breaks. Don’t feel guilty about being a bit lazy workwise, daydreaming can lead to good things. This may lead you to refocus on what’s important in your life. 2016 is going to be a relaxed year for you. Enjoy it.

PISCES 2016 is going to be powerful for pisceans. You will literally find yourself swimming through fabulous experiences. Your money will grow and you should think about investing and making it last for a rainy day. But, later in the year you’ll find a little relationship strain - not necessarily romatically. Avoid being rude, it won’t pay off.
