HICKEY’S PHARMACY ANNOUNCES AMBITIOUS FIVE-YEAR GROWTH

Hickey’s Pharmacy, Ireland’s largest independently-owned pharmacy group, has announced the opening of two new outlets in Cork as part of an ambitious five-year growth plan through which the group will double in size. The Mayfield and Baker’s Road pharmacies will bring the total number of Hickey’s pharmacies in Cork to five.

The family-owned company, founded by pharmacist Paddy Hickey in 1995, will now operate from 36 locations across Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wexford.

Hickey’s plans to add a further eight outlets by the end of 2019 and the group is on track to hit its target of 60 by 2022. Hickey’s employs 350 staff.

Online doctor VideoDoc has announced an agreement with McCabes Pharmacy to offer a free delivery service direct to patients.

VideoDoc doctors, each of whom is registered with the Irish Medical Council and has received remote services training, are available for consultations online via the www.videodoc.ie website or through the VideoDoc app. For patients who are unable or prefer not to travel to collect medication, VideoDoc can send the prescription to McCabes Pharmacy, which in turn will deliver the medication to the individual’s location of choice. McCabes offers the same day delivery in Dublin and a next day delivery service anywhere in Ireland.

“Our delivery service ensures that patients never run out of much needed medication.

VideoDoc who provide online doctor consultations extend healthcare even further to those who might have mobility or scheduling issues and we’re delighted to assist these patients and provide ease of access to medicines,” said Cormac Loughnane, superintendent pharmacist of McCabes Pharmacy.

DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY SHOW GARDEN UNVEILED AT BLOOM

BELONG TO ANNOUNCES NEW MENTAL HEALTH YOUTH CAMPAIGN BeLonG To Youth Services the national organisation supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI+) youth, has announced a new mental health campaign supported by Bank of Ireland.

As an ambassador for Dementia: Understand Together, former justice minister Nora Owen recently unveiled the campaign’s ‘Moments in Time’ show garden at Bord Bia’s Bloom in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

The garden was designed by Newtown Saunders Ltd, TrinityHaus and Sonas apc. The garden is an initiative of the Dementia: Understand Together campaign, led by the HSE in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Genio, which aims to create an Ireland that embraces and includes people with dementia, and which displays solidarity with them and their loved ones. To coincide with the unveiling of the garden, the campaign has published its Top Tips for a Dementia-friendly Garden for members of the public online, which includes recommended plants to stimulate memory such as daisies, carnations and hydrangeas.

For Owen, being involved with the campaign and, in particular, its development of a dementia-friendly garden, is particularly fitting as her husband Brian has always had a love of the garden. “Brian was always such a keen gardener. He loves nothing more than to sit in the swing-chair out the back and look at the wood pigeons nesting there,” she said. “They give him hours of entertainment. He can’t do all that he used to do to tend to the garden but he still enjoys every bit of it; it gives him such peace. I can see the benefits the garden brings to Brian. He is able to sit out in it with the sun shining on his face and relax. It’s so wonderful for a person with dementia and their carer to be able to get outside with a nice cup of tea and sit peacefully for a while.”

The campaign will encourage LGBTI+ youth struggling with mental health problems to seek assistance. The framework around this new campaign was designed in consultation with LGBTI+ young people, mental health professionals and youth workers all around the country. Its mission is to promote a more positive ‘help-seeking’ attitude when it comes to mental health.

Bank of Ireland will back the campaign with a €10,000 contribution. The funding will support the nationwide rollout of the initiative, ensuring that young people know about available sevices when they need them most.

“We are now living in a more inclusive Ireland, but our experience and research shows that LGBTI+ young people still need support and guidance when it comes to mental health. With this campaign we’re hoping to highlight that seeking help is always worth it,” said Moninne Griffith, executive director, BeLonG To Youth Services. “We want to show that sharing problems can be a liberating and life-saving experience.

“We also want to help young people to understand that getting help isn’t something to be feared. The ultimate focus is for LGBTI+ youth to actively seek out solutions to mental health problems, and to understand that it is their right to do so. We’re extremely proud to partner with Bank of Ireland on this project and with their generous support we’ll be able to spread this important message far and wide.”

PHARMACIES CONTINUE TO ADAPT THEIR RETAIL OFFERING – AIB REPORT

AIB has released its 2018 Pharmacy Outlook Report, which shows an improving outlook for pharmacists, but pressure remains on the sector. With over 1,800 pharmacies operating throughout Ireland, the importance of the sector cannot be underestimated, in terms of the contribution it makes to the healthcare needs of the population as well as the wider economy. The Pharmacy Outlook Report is supported by a survey carried out by JPA Brenson Lawlor. It focuses on the trends within the pharmacy sector and how pharmacists can remain competitive in their local market.

“As the population grows older, the demand for healthcare services will increase and this will present opportunities for pharmacists to grow their business in the future if they evolve with the changing trends in the sector,” said Alan Makim, head of retail & franchising, Business Banking, AIB.

“Since joining a buying group, many pharmacists have graduated to a full franchise offering that provides marketing, category management, and sophisticated business intelligence supports to optimise sales performance,” continued Makim. “This frees the pharmacist up to concentrate on the service offering to customers, whether that’s in the form of better customer interactions, dispensary efficiencies or additional health and screening services which may, in some cases, add to revenue.”

Partner at JPA Brenson Lawlor Jason Bradshaw added: “With a majority of pharmacist looking to expand their business, 2017 was a buoyant year for M&A activity.”

This is a trend he believes is set to continue in 2018 thanks to an increase in the availability of finance and strong multiples of between five to six times maintainable EBITDA as sales prices.

According to the survey, 71pc of pharmacists have joined a buying group, with 83pc saying that this led to an immediate increase in their gross margin. This trend could be expected to continue if further pricing cuts are introduced.

“Capital expenditure programmes like store renovations and acquisitions have been a common theme throughout the sector over the last two years,” concluded Makim.

GOVERNMENT'S FOCUS MUST SHIFT TO SMALL, HOMEGROWN BUSINESSES – SFA The Small Firms Association (SFA) has called on Government to shift its focus from multinationals to small, indigenous businesses in Budget 2019.

It made the call at the National Economic Linda Barry, SFA Dialogue in Dublin Castle assistant director in June. ”On one hand, we need to make sure that our economy is more resilient to external shocks.

On the other hand, we have a situation where, even with a strongly growing economy, less than half of SFA members tell us that their businesses are growing,” said Linda Barry, SFA assistant director.

“It is clear to those of us working with small businesses that there is a single solution that would mitigate both these macro and micro challenges. We need a national Small Business Strategy, placing a clear focus on the 98pc of businesses employing half the private sector workforce, which are the lifeblood of towns and villages around the country. It is time for a plan to boost the number and performance of small businesses. It would give these businesses a better chance of succeeding and provide Ireland with a more resilient indigenous enterprise base.”

The priority measures proposed for Budget 2019 under such a strategy are that all Budgetary measures should be assessed for their impact on small firms and no measures that impose additional costs on small companies should be introduced; the self-employed Earned Income Tax Credit must be brought to the same level as the PAYE tax credit; and capital gains tax rates need to be reviewed – the 33pc rate and the restrictive limit on Entrepreneur Relief is a poor reward for years and often decades of hard work to build a business.

BOOTS IRELAND LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT PEOPLE LIVING WITH CANCER Boots Ireland ambassador and broadcaster Georgie Crawford

Boots Ireland has launched its latest campaign to support people living with cancer. Entitled ‘Feel Like You Again’, it can be seen across a variety of TV channels.

The new film, the first Boots Ireland TV advertising campaign by Ogilvy Dublin, runs through a simple day of a mum, who’s getting ready to watch her child play in a sports match. It demonstrates how for one mum and her child, when dealing with an illness like cancer, getting through one day can be a struggle but it’s the small, daily victories that can help you begin to feel like you again.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the free in-store support services that Boots Ireland offer nationwide for people living with cancer.

Boots Ireland is in its sixth year of partnership with the Irish Cancer Society, with the aim of the partnership to increase awareness, promote prevention and support people living with cancer across Ireland.

“At Boots Ireland we’re extremely proud to be able to offer in-store supports to people living with cancer. Our film shows a beautiful insight into the life of a mum, trying to feel a bit more like her normal self for both herself and her son,” said Gillian Hennessy, head of marketing, Boots Ireland. “Our message is simple, we’re here to support those with cancer when they need it, whether it’s advice on medicines and local services from our information pharmacists or beauty and skincare advice from our cancer beauty advisors.”

HEALTH PRODUCTS REGULATORY AUTHORITY UNDERTAKES PRECAUTIONARY RECALL

ECZEMA EXPERT EVENT TO TAKE PLACE AS PART OF AWARENESS MONTH What you need to know about

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) recently announced it is undertaking a precautionary recall of a number of specific medicines containing the active ingredient valsartan that are used to treat blood pressure and heart conditions. A recall is under way across Europe following recent and emerging information that an impurity has been identified as part of the manufacturing process in a valsartan active substance manufactured at one facility in China. This active substance is used in a number of medicines marketed in Europe.

Valsartan is an important prescription medicine used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It is also sometimes prescribed after a heart attack.

The HPRA advises patients not to stop taking these important medicines but to go to their pharmacist or doctor at an early opportunity to discuss their treatment. Not all valsartan medicines are affected by

the recall. There are alternative valsartan-containing medicines and other treatments available to patients.

According to Dr Lorraine Nolan, chief executive, HPRA, the situation was an emerging one and being managed in real-time by the HPRA working with the European network of medicine regulators in order to determine the extent of the issue. “Laboratory testing and risk assessments will provide more information as part of this co-ordinated European approach to establish the possible impact on patients who have been taking these medicines and to ascertain if other products may be impacted.

“At this time, a precautionary recall of implicated products is the most appropriate action to protect patient health. We are engaging with healthcare professionals to manage this situation.”

The Irish Skin Foundation is hosting a free eczema expert event on 29 September in the Red Cow Moran Hotel, Dublin as part of Eczema Awareness Month.

The educational meeting for people living with or caring for eczema will be an opportunity to meet other people and hear from the experts.

The programme will feature a consultant dermatologist, dermatology nurse and parent of a child with eczema. Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis (AD), is a very common, non-contagious, chronic (long-term), inflammatory skin condition of varying severity.

Although it can start at any time of life, it most frequently begins in infancy, affecting as many as one in five children and one in 10 adults. For more on eczema turn to page 16.

AFFIDEA OPENS EXPRESSCARE WALK-IN CLINIC IN DUBLIN TO TREAT RANGE OF MINOR INJURIES AND ILLNESSES

BOOTS IRELAND OFFERS INNOVATIVE MOLE SCANNING SERVICE To raise awareness of melanoma in Ireland and to encourage a life-long habit among Irish people of regularly checking their moles, Boots is offering, in conjunction with ScreenCancer UK, an innovative mole scanning service in 10 Boots Ireland pharmacies nationally.

Affidea, the independent provider of diagnostic imaging, outpatient and cancer care services, has invested €2m in the opening of a new ExpressCare Clinic in Tallaght in Dublin for minor injuries and minor illnesses.

This investment into the new outpatient clinic for minor injuries and minor illnesses is part of an overall €20m investment by the company in the Irish healthcare sector over the last three years. Affidea Ireland has created over 130 new jobs on the Irish healthcare market and the opening of the new Affidea ExpressCare Clinic in Tallaght will involve the creation of 10 new positions, with more to come as the activity at the facility increases. This is the second Affidea ExpressCare Clinic to open in Ireland this year, with the other clinic operating in Cork.

“Instead of attending a busy and stressful A&E environment in a hospital, people can now attend the Affidea ExpressCare Clinic in Tallaght to have their minor injury or illness treated, quickly, professionally and to the highest of standards in an outpatient comfortable environment,” said Barry Downes, country manager of Affidea Ireland. “This clinic will significantly benefit the Irish healthcare sector by relieving the burden placed on Irish hospitals by large numbers presenting unnecessarily in A&E departments across the country.”

Developed in conjunction with ScreenCancer, the Boots Mole Scanning Service allows people aged 18 and over to have their moles or pigmented lesions scanned using a specialist device called a SIAscope. The scan is then assessed by a dermatology specialist, and each person will receive a report based on the specialist assessment.

Should a suspicious lesion be identified, the individual will be referred to their doctor or specialist for follow-on treatment. While the service doesn’t provide a diagnosis of skin cancer, ScreenCancer Dermatology Specialists analyse the moles or lesions to help identify any suspicious characteristics that might need further investigation.

“Providing a mole scanning service through pharmacies helps people to quickly check any moles that might be causing concern,” said Boots pharmacist Susan O’Dwyer. “I would encourage anyone who is worried about a mole to pop into a participating Boots pharmacy, especially if the mole has changed size, shape or colour recently. Our teams can advise you on the best way to stay safe in the sun, provide you with information on how to self-check your moles and scan suspicious lesions if required.”

Irish woman Noelle O’Connor of TanOrganic hit the headlines in August when she entered the UK’s Dragons’ Den and promptly turned down their offers. In a bid to help expand her multimillion euro business further, she and her partner Aaron Lubrani were looking for a €150,000 investment from the UK Dragons, but ultimately decided not to accept the cash.

In any case investment offers came flooding in as a result of her appearance and O’Connor’s timing couldn’t be better as the sunkissed look is in as we head into autumn.

O’Connor was the first entrepreneur to appear on Dragons’ Den twice. She and her TanOrganic brand initially appeared on RTÉ’s Dragons’ Den in 2010 where she secured investment from presidential hopeful Gavin Duffy. She’s the most successful entrepreneur to ever appear on the Irish show. TanOrganic sales were catapulted to €1m within

three months and since then TanOrganic has become one of the most successful tanning products ever launched, growing at a phenomenal rate, with sales doubling each year.

A passionate ITEC qualified beauty therapist/ lecturer and postgraduate of many holistic treatments, O’Connor has also studied in the Boston MIT Entrepreneurial Masters Program.

“I have been in the spa and salon industry for nearly 20 years and began my self-employed career in a single cubicle beauty room behind a local hair salon and I built it into a €3m business,” she explains. “I decided to develop my own line of products, due to the lack of 100pc natural, ingredient-conscious sunless tan products on the market. Having very fair skin, I used fake tans for over 20 years and felt there was a gap and need for a tan that was natural, moisturising, full of anti-oxidants and could double up as an anti-ageing body treatment. I wanted products that would

With this in mind I set about sourcing ingredients and developing my very own formula. And so TanOrganic was born. Gavin was great for the initial launch and many pharmacies will remember that success. Dragons’ Den BBC is a bit like déjà vu and the sales have just catapulted again with us being inundated for products.”

“The more I researched, the more I wanted to create a tan that was organic, natural and that worked, moisturising the skin rather than drying it like most tans available. Beauty therapists, including myself, have been asking for truly natural sunless products and by using certified organic ingredients it assures discriminating users that the natural claims are real. And if I am going to apply a product

O’Connor believes the Irish self-tan market is “insane”. “Since we launched in 2010 a new Irish tan has come out every year. It was difficult in 2013/14 because another brand came on the market that was cheaper. If you look at the competition now, that wasn't there when we started. So we had to get through that tough bit and come out the other end and we are probably stronger now than the other brands. We are in triple-digit growth in Boots Ireland and the fastest growing selftan in the category. Our customer base is loyal, once they start using it they don't change, they won’t use anything else once they try our brand. So we have brand loyalty and our company is growing. We currently employ 14 and are hiring about every three months.

Growing the team is really important and we won't just take on anybody. we're very selective. We want to be a global brand and we're well on our way to being one of the biggest self-tanning brands in the world.”

A big part of the TanOrganic ethos is built around giving back. “We are all about skin cancer prevention and promoting organic clean living,” says O’Connor. “In this country

there are almost 12,000 cases of skin cancer diagnosed a year and the awareness isn’t there. For instance a lot of people will know the pink ribbon is for breast cancer awareness but don’t know that the black ribbon is for skin cancer awareness. We work with many cancer charities to give back and support as much as we can.”

hile there’s no cure for eczema, it can be managed. Here’s some helpful information to give to customers looking for advice about this skin condition.

Eczema Awareness Month takes place in September this year. Eczema is the general term for a group of skin conditions that causes dry, itchy, scaly and red skin. It affects one in 12 adults in Ireland and one in five children. There is no cure, but in most cases it is manageable. According to Irishskin.ie, symptoms include red, dry, itchy skin, which can sometimes weep, become blistered, crusted and thickened. However, the appearance of eczema and the locations of the body affected can vary greatly, depending on the age of the person affected. The main symptom is an intense itch. Scratching only provides temporary relief, and leads to more itching and scratching, which can worsen eczema and make the skin more vulnerable to infection. Scratching in response to itch can cause some of the changes seen on the skin in eczema.

Eczema can be triggered or aggravated by exposure to a number of environmental irritants or allergens such as soap, bubble bath, shampoo, laundry detergents and fragrances. Emotional stress can also aggravate eczema and finding ways to reduce stress may lessen the frequency and the intensity of the flare-ups.

ECZEMA SKINCARE As mentioned, eczema sufferers should avoid ordinary soaps, bubble baths and shower gels as they dry out the skin by stripping away its natural oils. Instead, they should use emollient wash products when bathing, which leave the skin coated with a protective film afterwards.

In fact, emollients are an essential part of daily care, even when skin is clear. Head trainer with Graham Anthony Distribution Marie Therese Burke identifies that topical emollients need to contain active ingredients to bring immediate and lasting relief to eczema, psoriasis or any atopy prone skin. Emollients are medical moisturisers that can be used several times a day. They will help to restore the skin barrier, reduce the frequency of an eczema flare-up and will stop irritants and allergens that cause these flare-ups.

ECZEMA

Emollients can be used in two ways – applied directly to the skin as a leave-on moisturiser, and as a soap substitute instead of soap or shower gel. They come as lotions, creams and ointments. Finding the right emollient is often a matter of trial and error but the best emollients are ones that the sufferer prefers to use and will continue to use every day.

Some practical tips for for emollient therapy include establishing a good daily skincare routine and sticking to it; not to stop moisturising when skin is clear; making sure the product is fragrance-free; and applying it in a smooth, downward motion in the direction of hair growth.

Remember, when it comes to the skin it is very important to establish the right diagnosis and if there are any concerns a GP should always be consulted.

Chilblains are itchy, red or purple swellings that occur on the skin, most commonly the fingers and toes. They may also develop on ears and other parts of the body on rare occasions. Symptoms include an itching that develops in to a small, painful swelling. Caused by exposure to cold and damp conditions, they tend to occur in cold, damp conditions about freezing.

For this reason, they are an extremely common complaint in Ireland during autumn and winter. When the skin has been exposed to the chilly conditions, the arterioles can contract. Afterwards, when the skin is warmed up again, the arterioles expand and blood rushes in, causing congestion and inflammation. Older people are particularly susceptible to chilblains because they are more likely to have reduced circulation. Other people at risk include young people who work outdoors, and people with anaemia.

If the chilblain does ulcerate, it will need to be covered with an antiseptic dressing to avoid infection. Diabetics and others with ongoing medical conditions are advised to consult their doctor with ulcerated chilblains.

To avoid getting chilblains, it is important to keep the hands and feet warm, especially at night. People should be advised to wear socks in bed, rather than using a hot water bottle, and to use good quality, dry footwear at all times in cold, damp weather. They should avoid warming up at a fire or on a hot water bottle, immediately when they come in from the cold. Chilblains are much less likely to develop if the hand and feet are allowed to warm slowly.

TREATMENT Chilblains will go away naturally within a few weeks, but the process of healing can be accelerated by applying an over the counter lotion such as Calamine to the affected area.

Make sure to advise that it is important not to scratch chilblains, as the skin might get broken, causing them to ulcerate. A lotion will relieve much of the discomfort of the itching.

Sudocrem has also been found to be effective.

Good nutrition and wrapping up well will help but won’t always prevent sickness. Most upper-respiratory tract infections are viral, which means that antibiotics will be ineffective. So make sure you know what medicine you have in stock that will boost the little ones back to being better.

Back to school means back to playing in the yard, playing more sports and, therefore, an increase in the risk of physical injuries. Always tell parents to be mindful that kids are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing and any headgear that’s required. Make sure you have enough plasters, bandages and children’s pain relief behind the counter and tell them to speak to the pharmacist or GP if the injury is more than minor.

Warts and verrucas, which are warts on the sole of the foot, are caused by different strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is passed on through close skin-to-skin contact.

It can also be passed on by indirect contact, for example from contaminated objects such as towels and shoes. Areas around swimming pools and communal washing areas are highrisk for getting warts and veruccas, therefore kids can get them easily at this time of year.

You can offer concerned parents a variety of treatments, such as creams, gels, paints and medicated plasters, over the counter. The active ingredient in most of these treatments is salicylic acid, which has been shown to clear up warts within 12 weeks of treatment.

These days there are a huge number of children’s supplements available, containing a wide range of vitamins, minerals, fish oils, fibre and much more. With a broad, balanced diet, it’s possible for a child to get all the nutrients they need. However, the majority of children (and adults) do not get the well balanced diet they could. This could be down to a number of factors, such as bad habits, taste preferences, reluctance to try new foods, budget restrictions or time constraints. Make sure you know what you have in stock as the most common requests you are likely to receive will be for a tonic to help with fatigue and tiredness; products that can help with concentration levels at school; and vitamin supplements that can help boost immune systems.

PENSION CHANGES ARE AFOOT C

hanges are coming in relation to pension planning for pharmacy owners and all those who work alongside them in Irish pharmacies, writes Ted Dwyer.

I have regularly observed how pensions are regarded with some scepticism, especially by younger people. Of course, I can understand why.

They know they are a good thing in theory but retirement age seems such a long way away. As a result, saving into a pension plan is often put on the long finger and years, if not decades, can pass before people start saving properly for their retirement. By then, it can be too late.

I refer to the publication of The Pensions Authority Proposals of June 2016 and the Roadmap for Pension Reform 2018-2023. One of the main items being proposed aims to address this tendency to put pension saving on the long finger (to be addressed via ‘auto-enrolment’), the other is more technical in nature but has implications right now for pharmacists nonetheless.

AUTO-ENROLMENT

Auto-enrolment into a pension plan has been in place in Australia for many years and is now also in operation in England and Northern Ireland. In Ireland it is set to happen within a few years.

What does it mean? In simple terms it means that every employee in Ireland will automatically become part of a pension plan whether the employer or employee likes it or not. Yes, employ-

ees can opt out if they want to, but the experience in other countries is that once an employee is in a pension plan, they actually enjoy the comfort and feel good factor about having their own pension plan and very few decide to opt out. Employers and employees will be party to this new contract.

In reality it is a great thing for any employee who is not in a pension plan. Currently in Ireland, almost 40pc of all employees have no pension funding in place.

Hopefully, in the years ahead, with auto-enrolment, most employees will have something approaching a decent pension fund to augment the State pension.

In the UK, the employer currently contributes 2pc of the employee’s salary to their pension fund and the employee contributes 3pc.

After April 2019 (in the UK) the employer’s contribution increases to 3pc and the employee 5pc, so a total of 8pc of salary will be paid each year into the employees’ pension fund.

We have no idea what the starting point will be in Ireland but it will probably be a similarly modest contribution initially and then increase over time to give both parties a chance to budget for the costs involved.

Our suggestion to employers and company owners is that if you are thinking about putting a pension plan in place for your employees, and if you want to be able to make your own decisions in relation to what type of pension plan suits you and your employees (rather than be bound by the rules of the new national scheme), then get advice now and put it in place before auto-enrolment comes into effect. It would seem, from other jurisdictions at least, that existing arrangements can still be honoured even after auto-enrolment has arrived.

Executive pensions for pharmacy owners and locums In addition to auto-enrolment as outlined above, there is one other item that is due to change almost immediately (from September 2018). This is in relation to the setting up of one-member executive pensions, typically the pension vehicle of choice for pharmacy owners and contractors through limited companies.

In Ireland, there are more one-person executive individual pension plans in place than in the rest of Europe and the Pensions Authority is naturally concerned at the very high levels of these arrangements currently in Ireland (and therefore the number of trustees in place, many

of whom aren’t sufficiently qualified to act as trustees). It plans to enhance the authorisation process and ongoing regulatory process for these pension arrangements going forward which, to my mind, will make it more difficult and expensive to put a one-person executive pension plan in place in the coming years.

Executive pension plans have been the vehicle of choice for business owners generally

because they are flexible, efficient and easy to set up.

They (or at least executive pension plans in their current form) might soon be a thing of the past.

As a result of what is about to happen over the next few years, it might be prudent for all pharmacy owners and locums to review their own pension funding urgently and, if they are currently

humming and hawing about setting one up or doing additional funding, it may be wise to do it soon before the changes take effect.

TOP TIPS FOR HIRING SEASONAL PHARMACY EMPLOYEES

C

hristmas planning should start early in any business and should include a 360-degree approach to retail. Your retail gift offering is vitally important, but don’t forget the additional HR demands during the Christmas period where you may be replying on additional agency and part-time staff to meet demand. Beauty business expert Liz McKeon gives some top tips for hiring seasonal pharmacy employees.

1. START EARLY A last-minute approach to hiring seasonal retail employees can leave your pharmacy short-staffed at the busiest time of the year. Plan to bring on seasonal staff at least three weeks before the busy period starts. Getting seasonal staff on board early prevents chaos of your full-time staff trying to train during the busiest time. Late hiring will affect productivity and profits as there will be an increased likelihood of seasonal employees making mistakes.

2. TAKE ON EXTRA HR HELP Hiring staff for the shop floor isn't the only consideration as the influx of applications and interviews mean you'll need some extra HR support. Think about also hiring seasonal HR employees as this could be necessary to meet your recruitment goals.

3. ANALYSE TRENDS To create a successful seasonal hiring strategy, be in a position to anticipate your business needs. If this isn't the first time you're hiring seasonal employees, review previous sales and staff records. Analysing trends will help you forecast the numbers of workers needed for the year.

4. UPDATE JOB DESCRIPTIONS Review job descriptions for seasonal hires to make sure they're up to date. Job descriptions that are more than a couple of years old will most likely contain missing tasks. This can lead to unintentional poor hires.

5. KEEP HIRING STANDARDS HIGH It can be tempting to let hiring standards slip when employing seasonal employees. The temporary nature of retail seasonal workers can make it easy to overlook their importance. To prevent bad hires negatively affecting customers and your profits, seasonal employees need to meet the same criteria as permanent staff.

6. ONLY PROMISE WHAT YOU CAN DELIVER Seasonal employees may be eager for the opportunity to transition to a full-time position after the holiday work is over. To avoid disappointment, it's best not to guarantee long-term work if you're not 100pc sure this is possible.

7. CONTACT PREVIOUS SEASONAL EMPLOYEES Your previous seasonal hires should be part of your talent pool that you can call on when you need extra help. Reaching out to them before you advertise the vacant positions is a good idea as they might be in the market for extra work again.

THE CHRISTMAS PARTY: AVOIDING A HR HEADACHE!

s the festive season looms in the not-so-distant future, plans for the annual work A Christmas party are probably under way. While fun is at the top of the agenda, there are also some HR issues to consider.

The work Christmas party is a long-standing tradition. It’s a way to recognise staff contribution and effort throughout the year, to allow everyone to blow off some steam and to get to know their colleagues and bosses.

However, when alcohol is involved it is also possible that inappropriate behaviour will occur such as insulting conduct, unwanted sexual advances etc. And what happens at the Christmas party may not stay at the Christmas party. In sober moments after the event there may be many red faces and for employers it can bring a host of issues. It’s important that you manage the risk of staff misconduct, grievance and other HR-related issues. What many staff seem to be ignorant of is that any Christmas event that is work-related is an extension of the workplace and as such employers are liable for third party actions. There have been several cases in recent years that have found that an employer can be liable for such employee actions at work-related social events.

PREPARATION IS KEY Send an email in advance to all employees setting out clear written guidance. Points made should include: that employees should consume alcohol responsibly and remember to show due consideration to their fellow employees and members of the public; that

under no circumstances are they to drink and drive; that drunken and/or disorderly behaviour, illegal drug taking, verbal or physical abuse, harassment of a sexual or discriminatory nature will not be tolerated and any such behaviour is likely to result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal; and that they are at all times expected to observe the policies put in place by their employer.

SOCIAL MEDIA With social media more prevalent than ever, remember an employee may publish photos from the party on their network with numerous consequences, for example negative publicity might be brought to the company or issues could arise between employees if one takes a picture of the other and posts it without their permission. As such, it is advisable that employers have a detailed policy in place on email and internet usage and that such a policy extends to work-related events.

Employers are also advised to notify their employees to respect the right to privacy of their colleagues when attending such events.

So with the boundaries put in place and everyone involved aware of company policy around the event, the Christmas party should be a fun and enjoyable night out that is remembered for all the right reasons.

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost the time of year to start thinking about Christmas, but it is. The time between now and the Yuletide season won’t be long passing and this means many things for businesses, in particular a spike in sales and productivity. While that’s obviously a great way to end the year, it’s important that you have plans put in place to cope with the increased demand. One way to cover this peak time is to employ casual workers, on a short-term, temporary basis.

The benefit of seasonal workers is that they are there for the busy times and in January when things take a natural slow down their contact is concluded. There are many pros and cons of hiring seasonal workers, however make sure you are aware of your legal obligations when hiring seasonal workers on fixed-term contracts. They key to any kind of employment, including seasonal workers, is to clearly define the terms and conditions in

a written contract of employment. In doing that, you’ll reduce the risk of any kind of dispute, meaning that you and your employees, whether temporary or permanent, can enjoy a productive Christmas season. Here are some dos and don’ts in order to make sure you do it right and that the arrangement works for all parties.

DO Remember that these employees have the same statutory rights as your other employees.

Provide them with a contract of employment in the first two months of their employment and make sure that it’s clear.

Remember that if there is no contract in place, their status may not be clear, and in the event of a dispute, it will be for the courts to decide whether they are classed as employed or self-employed.

DON’T Forget that if someone works on an irregular basis, but over a period of time, they may be able to claim continuous employment, under an implied contract of employment or a contract that has lapsed with no communication to the employee. This means that the employee has an expectation that work will be provided and they are effectively a permanent employee.

Overlook that if you wish to employ casual workers at certain times of the year, you can offer a fixed-term/specified purpose contract, which confirms a fixed, limited period of employment. Employed casual workers are protected by the Protection of Employees (Fixed Term Work) Act 2003, which requires that employees on fixed-term contracts are treated no less favourably than similar employees on indefinite contracts.

Forget to confirm to the employee that the contract has ended.

Can you tell us a bit about your pharmacy?

It’s in the local shopping centre in Roscrea.

What happened was I came home from France in 1992 and was offered a unit by the developer so I went to have a look at it and decided to take it. So that’s how I started.

I’d been a pharmacist in France and before I went to France I’d had a pharmacy in Donnybrook in Dublin. I was 23 when I opened that.

How important is being a local pharmacy to your business?

I’m a great believer in good customer service, that’s very important to me. Being a local pharmacist, it’s very important to be involved at local level, to be involved in all that goes on in the town, such as with the schools, the local musical society etc. That in itself enhances our profile. We made some changes to the pharmacy to make it more comfortable for elderly people. Our consultation room is wheelchair accessible and overall is a very central part of our customer service.

What gives your pharmacy the competitive edge?

I never think in terms of finance really. I think in terms of the patient. We’re lucky to have a very good GP beside us so that’s very convenient for people. We also have a chiropodist on alternate weeks in the consultation room, which is ideal for the elderly. It’s every second Friday and it’s actually booked out always. It’s very handy and convenient for patients. We also have a diabetes nurse. It’s very important to encourage people who’ve never had bloods done before, especially men, to get them done.

What health concerns are you noticing among your customers?

Mental health in younger people and type 2 diabetes are the biggest challenges. My own economic worries would be around the HSE and their ongoing changes in policies.

What are your hopes for the future?

We want to continue to improve our patient services. The consultation room is one of our biggest assets and we hope to add to this and all of our other services in the future.

IPR Suitable for both cold and flu infections Preparations containing both root and aerial part of Echinacea purpurea are not just antiviral, making them useful for the majority of cold and flu infections, but also antibacterial, which mops up the remaining cold and flu bugs and is helpful in averting the secondary bacterial infections that often complicate viral infections, causing bronchitis, sinusitis, and pneumonia.

Get it while it’s hot A trial carried out at the Common Cold Centre in Cardiff has shown that subjects with cold infections who consumed a hot drink showed a subjective but significant improvement in their symptoms (runny nose, cough, sore throat, fatigue) versus subjects given the same drink at room temperature. The authors concluded that, “A hot, tasty drink is a beneficial treatment for relief of most symptoms of common cold and flu.” (1)

HOW ELDERBERRY FUNCTIONS IN AN IMMUNE COMPLEX What is the evidence behind a beta glucans/ elderberry complex as a defence against respiratory infections? Elderberries have traditionally been used as supportive agents to help fight the common cold and flu. But what about clinical evidence?

A trial involving more than 300 long-haul air travellers in economy1 provided helpful insight.

The trial investigated if a standardised elderberry extract has beneficial effects on physical (especially respiratory) and mental health. Cold episodes, cold duration and symptoms were noted in a daily diary and assessed using the Jackson scoring method.

Participants also completed three surveys with questions about their upper respiratory symptoms and quality of life at baseline, just before travel and at four days after travel. Most cold episodes occurred in the placebo group but the difference was not significant.

SIGNIFICANT SUCCESS However, placebo group participants had a significantly longer duration of cold episode days (117 vs 57) and the average symptom score over these days was also significantly higher (583 vs 247). The data suggests a significant reduction of cold duration and severity in air travellers. Air travel is the ideal environment for such trials as passenger well-being is affected by numerous factors, not least fatigue, impairment of immunity and increased stress. Upper respiratory disorders such as allergic rhinitis and attracting virus or bacterial infections are common.
