IPR NEWS
THE LATEST NEWS AMBER ACCESSORY WARNING The National Consumer Agency is highlighting the dangers of using amber accessories (necklaces, anklets, bracelets) as teething aids and are reminding retailers that they will take appropriate action to remove these products from sale, where they are being marketed or intended for use by children under 3 years of age. Amber beads are often marketed as baby “teething” aids in the form of jewellery. These necklaces, bracelets and anklets pose a serious risk to babies and young children such as a potential choking/inhalation or strangulation hazard. The Agency has worked with a number of Irish online suppliers to effect voluntary recalls of the products and to secure commitment from these suppliers that they would cease marketing them for use by children under 3 years of age. Safety Issues The National Consumer Agency has tested a number of the amber accessories at an accredited test house, in accordance with international standards. All of the products tested failed on a number of criteria, including the impact test, tension test and small parts test. The impact test checks whether or not the beads will shatter under pressure, the tension test checks the durability of the string and the small parts test ascertains the choking risk, by using a cylinder designed to simulate the dimensions of a child’s throat. Any product that fails these tests is unsafe for any child under 3. Many of these items are sold online by operators but there may also be a small number of
pharmacies around the country who continue to market these products as ‘teething’ aids, which may lead parents to believe they are a legitimate medical product. All businesses (i.e. manufacturers, importers, suppliers and retailers) are reminded of their legal obligations to ensure that the products they place on the market are safe. If you have any questions related to the retailing of these items, please contact: product_safety@nca.ie The National Consumer Agency has responsibility for market surveillance in respect of the safety of a wide range of consumer products, excluding food. It has a number of roles in relation to product safety; enforcing product safety legislation and alerting consumers about unsafe products. If the Agency has evidence that a product presents a risk to the health and safety of consumers, it has the power to order a business to take remedial action, which in some cases may require the withdrawal of the product from sale and its recall from consumers. The Agency can prosecute if businesses do not comply with directions and if prosecuted, a business could be fined up to €3,000 or face three months’ imprisonment or both.

ENERGY BANK - A CHARITY SUCCESS
It’s an alarming statistic that one in five teenagers are overweight or obsese. With this in mind, leading heart disease and stroke charity, the Irish Heart Foundation, and the representative association for National Governing Bodies of Sport, the Federation of Irish Sport, have called on post-primary schools to redouble their efforts in implementing the Department of Education and Skill’s recommendation that two hours’ physical education be provided to post-primary school students each week. The call was made at the launch of the Pumped Schools’ Video Awards, supported by Bayer in partnership with the Irish Heart Foundation, the Federation of Irish Sport and RTÉ news2day, which seeks to encourage young people to unleash their creative juices and produce 90-second movies on a heart health theme. The competition invites participants to explore the science behind physical activity, diet and smoking, the impact of these on health and wellbeing, and produce compelling videos that inspire viewers to act. With a prize fund of €10,000, there are three categories in which to enter – “Smoking Stinks”, “Active Teens—Healthy Hearts” and “Weighty Matters”. The awards are open to all post-primary students between the ages of 12 and 16 years with the winner of each category winning €3,000 for their school’s sports department and each individual student receiving a €100 voucher. More information can be found at: www.pumped.ie.
The Pharmaton Energy Bank for Temple Street came to Dundrum Town Centre to encourage busy shoppers to donate a small bit of their energy to the Temple Street Children's Hospital. TV presenters Lorraine Keane and Anna Daly joined the busy Lorraine Keane pedals in crowd to show aid of Temple Street their support on the day. The Pharmaton Energy Bank is a suite of exercise bikes, which were set up on the third floor where shoppers were busy in the ‘Back to School’ rush. Rather than asking people to donate cash, Pharmaton asked people to hop on a bike and pedal for Temple Street. The energy used was converted into a cash sum for the hospital. Pharmaton set a target of €10,000 which they then presented to the children’s hospital – 247 people took part over 4.5 hours to raise this sum. TV3’s Anna Daly was delighted to be representing Temple Street on the day: ‘’As an ambassador to the hospital, I was delighted to take part in the Pharmaton Energy Bank event to raise much needed funds for Temple Street. It was a fun energetic day for a great cause.’’

WORLD COPD DAY MARKED WITH “SAVE YOUR BREATH” NATIONAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN Save Your Breath is a new national COPD awareness campaign running from November 17th-23rd spearheaded by COPD Support Ireland, and supported by Boehringer Ingelheim, GSK, Menarini and Novartis. It coincides with World COPD Day on November 19th. The charity, which brings together a nationwide network of COPD support groups, will undertake a COPD Screening Roadshow visiting key locations and encouraging people to know the symptoms of COPD and to seek diagnosis. COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, includes conditions such as bronchitis and emphysema, and results in shortness of breath, tiredness and reduced exercise ability because the airways in the lungs are obstructed. It is a serious disease and in Ireland deaths from respiratory disease are third only to deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer. COPD is the major cause of respiratory deaths. Early diagnosis can help people avoid more serious forms of the disease and thereby enjoy a much better quality of life. Baby Shock! Suddenly, you’re handed a baby - a beautiful tiny human and you feel slightly panicked. Never in your life has your local pharmacy been so important to you, especially late night pharmacies! We look at some essential new baby products, with some new mums giving us the lowdown on their pharmacy experience. Nipple Shields Breastfeeding is not as straight forward as any woman, who has yet to have children, might think. Nipple Shields, primarily used by women suffering from sore nipples, can also help the baby latch on. They’re not recommended for long-term use and mums can talk to their public health nurse about breastfeeding clinics. “They had to use suction during 16

the birth,’ says new Liz, mum of baby Caleb, from Dublin. “I tried for three
days to get him to latch on, but it was really difficult, and apparently suction can be the culprit - they’re not sure why. Whatever causes it he completely rejected my nipples. Eventually a midwife recommended nipple shields - and they really helped. However, I found that not all pharmacies had them in stock and they can go missing in muslin cloths really easily! I find them in the laundry basket sometimes. It’s great to

But, not all pharmacies sell them. “My newborn daughter took her time to find a balance between eating and overeating, and I took a while to realise that I needed to tell the signs when she was about to spit up. A quick and handy muslin cloth was always beside us to clean us both up, as she usually aimed right into my cleavage!” says Jean, mum of Katie from Cork. Colic Relief Experts are not really sure what colic is; it can be anything from wind, indigestion, needing a cuddle - or even that his/her brain is still maturing and they have yet to learn to stop crying once they’ve started. It can be an upsetting time for new parents. In that case late night pharmacies can be God-sends for new parents. “My local pharmacist helped me out with a colic relief product and some muchneeded advice. The period of non-stop crying went on for a few weeks at the same time every day. It’s abated now 18

but it was so tough at the start, that I would have to leave the room to take a breather,” says Sharon, mum of Tadhg from Galway. Maternity Aids Not many new mums realise the length of time that lochia (post-birth bleeding) can carry on for. Sometimes it stops and then comes back just when you thought it was starting to finish. Good maternity pads and other helpers can really ease the burden. “The maternity pads they had in the hospital were bulky and had no adhesive side, so they would move a lot. I found excellent maternity pads in my local pharmacy and they really helped with leakage. I also got my hands on some heat pads for the pain as it’s not safe
to have a hot water bottle near a baby,” says mum to Sean, Elaine from Dublin. Niceties of life! It’s tough getting out of the house with a new baby, but when you can, your local pharmacy can be really nice to pop into when you’re on a short walk. “I treated myself to some mascara, BB cream for my tired skin, some fancy shower gel, as MY GOD do you appreciate showers in the early days! I also found my local pharmacist was very helpful as I noticed a bump on my child’s neck. He told me it was probably just a lymph node from a cold she had that was inflamed, and I verified it with my doctor. He really helped to calm my fears,” says Karen from Wicklow, mum to baby Leah.

IPR PHARMACY BUSINESS
In The Family Thomas McDonald of JPA Brenson Lawlor Chartered Accountants looks at six steps to securing the survival of family pharmacies
I
f there’s a positive legacy from the recession we have endured for some years (and are hopefully overcoming) it's that our society has recaptured and recognised the real importance of community in our lives. During the mad years of the boom the planning process did more than its fair share to rip the heart out of communities, by allowing bigger and bigger shopping centres to open in out of town locations. Belatedly, town planners are trying to repair some of the damage done by endeavouring to entice us back to shop in our towns and villages and to rebuild and re-energise our shopping streets. As well as attracting the pubs, the bakers and the undertakers back on to Main Street we believe that the family pharmacy, a key part of any community, should be part of that rebirth. However, as advisers to many within the sector, we know that, in a lot of cases, the family pharmacy is just about holding on for dear life, and can’t afford any more financial knocks. Anyone who knows anything about the sector knows how it has been severely impacted by a succession of adverse changes, price cuts and FEMPI measures. Consequently, there are real survival issues for many pharmacies in the country, particularly those with relatively low prescription item numbers - and these predominantly tend to be family pharmacies. So we know that any more cuts of (any) kind could lead directly to the closure of pharmacies and particularly family pharmacies. Their survival will mean they’ll have to become leaner and meaner and they should focus on six specific areas such as: 20
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
An ageing population With a forecasted rise of 200,000 people over the age of 65, (that's a 50% increase over the next seven years) we believe this will create a great opportunity for family pharmacies to market to this demographic. A simple way to begin to do so is to make sure that you tell them you welcome their trade – and supplying a comfy seat to sit on while they wait is one small step in that direction. IT Systems Previously pharmacy IT systems were geared for larger organisations, but in the past few years prices have plummeted and the productivity gains - from product ordering to stock management, to identifying your most (and least) profitable lines – making these systems an essential weapon in any family pharmacy’s survival arsenal. Symbol groups Smaller pharmacies should look at the possibility of joining with larger symbol groups – there are many to choose from. However, you should take professional advice about which one is the right one for you – and these groups can give a real option for owner managed pharmacies, one that wasn’t there in the past. The right symbol group can give owner managed pharmacies an opportunity to compete with the majors through better buying, better retailing support and all the other benefits that these groups offer while still retaining ownership of the business.
Thomas McDonald of JPA Brenson Lawlor
this is an ideal time to reassess where your pharmacy is situated and to take advantage where possible of better sited shop units. Banks Finally banks are lending to the pharmacy sector! They're providing funding for viable propositions, in particular where practices are merging or expanding outlet numbers. The Secret Weapon But of everything we have listed above, we think that the hidden weapon of the family pharmacy is the owner manager, himself or herself. Owner managers work longer and harder for less money – something the majors just can’t compete with – and that in itself should assure the long term viability of the local pharmacy. Thomas McDonald is a partner with JPA Brenson Lawlor, Chartered Accountants, specialist business

IPR YOUNGBLOOD FEATURE
Young Bloods Consumers are becoming more aware of what they’re putting on their skin. With increasing numbers of women and men shying away from parabens and opting for healthier make-up, Youngblood is a premier luxury mineral cosmetics line from the USA created by Pauline Youngblood, a former medical aesthetician.
D
uring her career, Pauline was in daily contact with patients who had severely traumatised skin from harsh laser treatments, acne, rosacea and cosmetic surgeries. Such patients often take up to six months before their skin returns to normal, and Pauline simply was not satisfied with the makeup options available. She began working with chemists to develop a suitable option — a product that would cover raw, inflamed or discoloured skin, while allowing it to breathe and heal. This led to her initial work with natural mineral cosmetics. 28
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
“The concept of mineral makeup was great, but the quality was missing,” Pauline says. “The colours weren’t realistic; they were too pink or orange, and they looked artificial.” Pauline began formulating her first loose mineral foundation, which provided excellent coverage and a natural appearance without clogging the skin. Pauline’s patients experienced such dramatic success with her new formula that they continued using it long after their skin had healed. Before long, patients and friends convinced her to make this natural mineral foundation commercially available, and in 1996 Pauline founded Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. More than 16 years later, Pauline’s Natural Mineral Foundation is the flagship product, and Youngblood is now a complete line, offering dozens of products in a comprehensive palette of shades with realistic skin tones and beautiful, natural finishes. The brand has an extremely loyal following among major celebrities (including Jessica Alba, Jennifer Anniston & Gwyneth Paltrow), top beauty editors and professional makeup artists.

IPR NUTRITION
Lactoflora for Kids Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride is a medical doctor with postgraduate degrees in Neurology and Human Nutrition. She gives her rundown on how to keep kids healthy from the inside out.
T
he digestive system is a complex piece of equipment. It has to break down all the food we eat into tiny particles; collecting all the nutrients, transporting them to the blood stream to feed every cell in the body and eliminating the waste, it also contains 70% of the body’s immune system and acts as the body’s first line of defence. In our gut, we have a community of bacteria that keep us healthy. These microflora help us with our immune system by keeping the gastrointestinal tract slightly acidic which, in turn, inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria. * Medication, although it has its place and is necessary in illness, can also have an impact on the integrity of gut function. For example, a course of antibiotics changes the balance of the intestinal flora and although the body will eventually over time rebalance this somewhat, it is advisable to give a course of probiotics during or after a course of antibiotics. Getting a child back to the full of their health is always a trying time for a parent. The important thing to remember is that they eat some food and stay hydrated. When a child is ill, their taste buds can be affected and may not want what you are trying to give them, so initially giving them their favourite foods might be best until they are stronger and then you can provide more nourishing foods. The nutrients found in wholefoods support proper functioning of the body whereas consistently poor choices may compromise a child’s health. Hydration is important and can be provided with healthy drinks, like 32

water, diluted fruit juices or a glass of milk. When your child is ready and on the road to recovery, there is nothing like getting out in the fresh air and encouraging some physical activity. Top Tips for Nutrition in Children Lead by example, children are most influenced by what they see and experience. A variety of foods is important for a balanced diet. If real food is eaten from an early age children are more likely to develop a taste for it. Choose wisely from all the food groups – protein, carbohydrates and fats. Water is very important in a balanced diet. Every cell in the body needs water. Let your children (over 5) be involved in shopping and cooking. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, allow for a weekend treat. Top Tips For Boosting Energy Levels Make sure breakfast is on the menu – in a busy household plan your morning meal the night before. Try not to have sugary boxed cereals, try eggs, beans on toast, porridge with fruit and yogurt – the options are endless. Reduce the amount of sugar in the diet, it gives a false energy that depletes very quickly leaving your child craving
more sweet food. Have healthy snacks around to boost energy levels. Give your child a boost to help their immune system when there are colds and other nasty bugs going around with a course of Lactoflora for Kids. Lactoflora for Kids is a probiotic for children to help boost the immune system. It contains Lactobacillis and Bifidobacteria to re-populate the ‘good’ bacteria in the intestine and crowd out the ‘bad’ bacteria. Lactobacillis are mainly found in the small intestine, Bifidobacteria are mainly found in the colon. These bacteria live in a symbiotic relationship with us and amongst other things lower the risk of disease and cancers. Lactoflora for Kids has a great synergy of ingredients, not only the probiotics but also their food in the form of prebiotics and the enzymes needed for energy and gut healing – the B vitamins. Lactoflora for Kids is ideal after a course of antibiotics, to help re-populate the beneficial flora in the intestine, or anytime you feel they might be stressed, or even in a situation where they may be vulnerable to picking up a bug in playschool/school. Taking Lactoflora for Kids helps with balancing the intestinal flora, keeping pathogenic bacteria at bay, encouraging vitamin synthesis, improving enzyme activity of the intestinal mucosal membrane and stimulating the immune system. “Lactoflora for Kids is a corner stone in the rebuilding of your child’s future.” *For all health claims in this article, please contact ClonMedica on 01-620 4000 for further details on research.

IPR THE BUSINESS OF RETAIL
Resolute
Does your pharmacy need a bit of a shake-up in 2015? We reveal some practical and existential retailing tips you might need to stick to, ultimately making your life easier in the New Year. Community Involvement If you’re not already involved in the community, now might be the right time to start. Retail studies have shown that businesses that are heavily invested in their communities, and that 'give back' can have substantial

rises in profit. Maybe it’s good karma in motion, who knows? Some ways of being a greater part of your community is to get involved with initiatives like Tidy Towns, college scholarships, sponsoring local competitions, charity volunteering of
individual staff members - but also holding coffee mornings for local services like hospices, etc. It can also be a way of getting your branding out there, even in suburbia. Altruism is always rewarded it seems: “Companies that encourage
THE BUSINESS OF RETAIL IPR
community involvement distinguish themselves from their competitors, and see many benefits, including loyal customers and happier employees. According to a May 2013 study by Cone Communications and Echo Research.” www.entreprenuer.com Horrible Bosses “A fish rots from the top down” is the saying from Roman times and the old adage rings true - if there’s fear and loathing within any organisation it will show through to the customers. Even if you’ve had the monopoly in your area for years; always try to
ensure that your staff are happy. Because it will be apparent to customers very quickly if there’s an aura of misery in any retail outlet. If you’re in the habit of taking your bad mood out on your staff, and it’s causing problems or a bad atmosphere, examine your reasons and try to change your behaviour. If it’s not you who’s the problem, e.g. a staff member who is causing problems through bullying, HR Service company Peninsula Business Services advises: “Employers may find it wise to implement an antibullying policy. Such a policy should give a clear and unambiguous message to all employees that certain types of behaviour will not be tolerated in your workplace. Examples of prohibited behaviour should be given and employees should be made aware that, should these actions be undertaken, they will be dealt with via the company’s disciplinary procedure.” Every retail entity in the public eye has a reputation, whether it be for customer service or great advice. Make sure your pharmacy is known for its excellence in both. Customers want to be left alone to browse, or, on the other hand, have a helpful shop assistant / pharmacist available to chat to them about a product / medicine. Try not to be too pushy. Pharmcies (no matter what socio-economic area they’re in) will always be the victims of theft. Don’t let paranoia cloud your judgement of customers on the whole. Not everyone is out to get you.
Stock Issues Have you got stock issues that you need to resolve? Will you be overstocked after Christmas? Don’t be afraid to talk to your supplier about re-packaging options, don’t ask - you won’t get. You can also offer items to your local newspapers (and don’t underestimate the power of some local newspaper ads) for competitions, prizes in exchange for advertising. Continually discounting stock is a quick fix and should not be a regular thing. Make sure that you let customers know that discounting is a once-off. You can also keep stock and re-package it in attractive wrapping for Valentine’s Day / Mother’s Day, etc. Make sure that you pay attention to cosmetic best before dates. “It’s really important to have new stock coming in to fill the space previously occupied by the markeddown stock. This gives you an opportunity to make good margins from the space that was previously low or negative margin,” says retailing guru, John Hogan of www. realworldretailcom. Tradeshows Irish Pharmacy Retailer magazine promotes trade shows throughout the year and for good reasons. Trade shows present an opportunity to pharmacies and pharmacy chains to be one step ahead on FOC product innovations. You could be known as the "first pharmacy that supplied x or y’ in your area". Trade shows also give you an opportunity to meet with new suppliers and get to know who you’re dealing with on a personal level, it might mutually benefit you both. “Attending trade shows is a definite retailing virtue,” says John Hogan, “They are the perfect opportunity to keep your shop fresh and one step ahead of the competition.” Irish Pharmacy Retailer

IPR ENTREPRENEUR INTERVIEW
Oh To Dream IPR Editor, Lucy Earley, chats to Donna Ledwidge, Owner and Creator of Dream Dots
Did you have experience in product development beforehand? Yes, I have a few brands under my belt now mainly in cosmetics and apparel. The first of which was a self-tan brand which I built from scratch with a friend of mine. We had great success with the brand and after five years of working on its advancement, I knew it was time for me to create something new.
Donna Ledwidge
How did you come up with the idea for Dream Dots? I personally suffered from severe breakouts throughout my teenage years. This coupled with a year of researching creams and topical lotions and potions, led me to develop my first spot treatment, Dream Dots. I stumbled across a particular type of wound dressing that was being used for chronic wound management in hospitals and here is where my inspiration for my latest product development idea was born. I decided to make a version of the medical device which would be available for all other breakout / spot suffers, OTC. After testing out the dressing on my own breakouts I couldn’t believe how quickly and gently it worked to heal the infected areas. When I ran out I couldn’t survive without it! So, a year later of intense research and development with my manufacturer, a patented overnight localised spot treatment was brought to market, which I called Dream Dots. 46

satin-smooth, wafer-thin surface, it acts seamlessly as a second skin, conforming to any contour of the face. On contact with the spot, the patented core locks in and absorbs the spot exudate. A moist healing environment is formed, maintaining ideal pH balance, temperature and hydration levels while sealing in repair factors, which leads to faster healing. Pain is reduced as nerve endings are cushioned and protected in this moist condition. The patch swells and turns white overnight as it absorbs exudate giving a visible reduction in redness and inflammation, when removed in the morning. What are your plans for 2015? Right now, my plans for 2015 are to focus on expanding the availability of Dream Dots across Europe and the US and also to broaden the product range.
What’s your demographic / market? Dream Dots demographic is both females and males between the age of 14 - 29 years old. However, in saying this, we do of course have customers outside of this grouping. The product itself has proved to be a skincare staple for individuals prone to breakouts for a number of various reasons. How do they work? A Dream Dot isn’t simply a sticker — it’s a unique super absorbent hydro matrix patch device. It targets spots and breakouts overnight using no harsh ingredients, yet gives dramatically effective results. With a 100% waterproof, breathable,

Irish Pharmacy Retailer
AT THE COUNTER IPR DAY LOOK: For the Base… Apply Paese mattiffying make-up (€12.99), wait a few minutes then apply Paese Lush Satin foundation (€16.50) and Paese’s brightening concealer in a light pink shade, which optically diminishes dark under-eye circles. Use loose and transparent Paese Bamboo Powder (€11.99) to obtain the effect of matte and smooth skin, with a subtle glow.
Contouring: Apply Paese blush with argan oil (€9.99) (no 35) to contour the cheekbones and create a slimming effect.
Eyes: Apply Paese eye shadow base (€9.99) with the pad of the ring finger and blend it out, wait five minutes before you apply eyeshadow; it intensifies the colour of eyeshadow and makes it easier to apply. Use Paese Diamond Trio eyeshadow (€3.99) (no 700). Apply the medium eyeshadow colour all over the lid as your base colour. Apply the darkest eyeshadow colour to the outer half of the crease of the eyelid to create depth. Blend the two colours at the point where they meet to create a flawless look. Apply the lightest of the three eyeshadows below the brow down to meet the colour on the base. Blend it out well. To give your lashes extreme
volume use Adore Volume Lash mascara (€9.99) in carbon black.
Lips: To finish the look, use Paese Lip balm lipgloss (€5.99) (no 621).
NIGHT LOOK For the Base… Apply Paese illuminating make-up base (€12.99) to brighten a tired and grey complexion. It leaves the skin with a Kashmir-like finish and smoothes out wrinkles. Wait a few minutes and apply Paese Long-Cover Fluid foundation (€12.99) for long-lasting, radiant coverage. Apply Paese Brightening Concealer (€11.99) under the eyes to cover dark circles. Set foundation using Paese semitransparent matte powder in natural shade (€9.99) (no 5A) to achieve a natural matte finish.
Contouring Enhance cheekbones with Paese Blush with argan oil Blush with argan oil (€9.99). To achieve the party season glow use Paese Sheer Glow powder (€12.99) in warm beige shade (no. 11); it makes skin look healthy and relaxed. Apply it by stippling the product on top of the cheekbones.
Eyes After applying the eyeshadow base, apply Paese Kashmir matte eyeshadow single (€4.99) in shade (no 612), across the lid, from the lashline to slightly beyond the crease, where it fades away. Then use Paese Linea automatic eyeliner (€8.99) in black glam colour. Work from the inner corner of each upper eyelid and move outwards along the roots of your eyelashes with several short strokes. Draw a line along the roots of the lower lashes and waterline. Smudge this layer with the sponge attached to the eyepencil to soften the look and cover any thin skin on your eyelid. For the perfect, black and glam line use black Paese Liquid Deepliner (€9.99) and apply it along the roots of the upper lashes. For spectacular lashes use Paese Adore 3D lash (€9.99) mascara which gives an immediate 3 in 1 effect: separates, make lashes longer and thicker. For perfect, full red lips use Manifesto liquid lipstick (€6.99) (no 905) it gives strong coverage of lipstick and mirror-like shine of lipgloss. IPR HOW WE SELL
Sharen McCabe
Very McCabe-able In our continuing ‘How We Sell’ series, IPR Editor, Lucy Earley, chats to Sharen McCabe, MD of McCabe’s Pharmacy What is the mission statement / ethos of McCabe Pharmacies? Our mission is really about delivering a dispensing service to our patients in a caring, compassionate yet efficient, convenient and reliable way. Our core customer remains those individuals who care for the health and wellbeing of themselves and of others and include people with chronic ailments, those who care for the very young, individuals with special needs and our senior citizens. So everything we try to do in our company must answer the question: “does it make the life of our patient easier?” We’re very focused on being providers of first port of call healthcare. To this extent we have some of the most 50

rigorous OTC training programs in Irish pharmacy. We put a lot of emphasis on the training of our Healthcare advisors as well as recognition of their achievements – of which there are many – they are consummate professionals and are very committed to the level of care they give patients. The compassion I see day to day often overwhelms me. Every week I receive unsolicited letters and emails from customers and patients praising the work of our team. We’re adamant that our customers get accurate and useful information on their ailments, that can make a real difference to their situation. McCabe’s Pharmacy is also a retailer of interesting and functional products that make people look and feel good. We’ve built a good reputation over many years for having a very wide variety
of products and services in store. Our suppliers are key to this and we work very hard and collaboratively to support their key initiatives. We find great products that can make a real difference to people’s health and their wellbeing. Our customers love this variety that they find in our stores and that has really helped build our footfall across our business in recent years. We’re known for having bucked the trend by increasing front of shop sales significantly in recent years, despite falling PCRS revenues. This is all down to having a shopping environment that customers find relevant to them – well priced, interesting products advised by well trained staff who are passionate about finding a solution for a person’s problem.
HOW WE SELL IPR
McCabe's signature front of house
Aisling Murphy of McCabes who was a Rising Star in the Retail Excellence Awards 2014, with REI Chairperson Oonagh O'Hagan
How do you help new McCabe Pharmacy branches overcome resistance to change? We seldom encounter resistance to change from our team. If anything, it’s usually our own team that are pushing me to look at new ways of doing things, new products, new approaches or filling me in on what competitors are doing! People working in pharmacy know that the sector has faced unprecedented challenges, and therefore, that changing how we do things has been essential to survival in the profession. Our patients certainly know that the pharmacy world has changed. They are better informed than ever before, are very value conscious, and have high expectations that we will provide a fast service that doesn’t eat into their precious time, while still having all the benefits of a caring relationship. What is your outlook on special offers and marketing in general? Special offers are important in keeping variety and interest in the shop. Customers do expect value for money
and it’s important that Irish pharmacy can demonstrate value for money. I think different operators will continue to have a different take on what special offers work for their customer segment – multibuys, single unit price, every day low price, gift with purchase. Over the years we know what works for us. Generally speaking, we stick to it, but are always experimenting with new ideas. From a marketing perspective, we communicate to our customers online, by email, text, social media and traditional media channels. You’ve got to get out and tell your customer what you’re doing from month to month but this can be done in very cost effective ways and big marketing budgets are not necessary- we certainly don’t rely on them! We do rely heavily on word of mouth too – if the product is great and the service is excellent – your customer will talk about it – and frankly that’s the most cost effective marketing that we’ve ever experienced. I do think that it's important that Irish pharmacists continue to demonstrate the value that the Profession brings to the general public. Time and time again we are challenged by those who don’t always know or appreciate the specific work that pharmacy does - including other
healthcare professionals, our own patients, the public, the media and importantly the public health system. So we’re very supportive of initiatives that market the profession better. What do you endeavour to change / improve in 2015? Despite all the rumblings in wider retail that sales are stabilising, there’s no doubt that Irish pharmacy is facing into its toughest year ever in 2015. The onslaught of the PCRS reductions will be fully felt in its entirety. There are so many aspects of our business that are less in our control than ever before. We’re absolutely committed to continuing to put the patient at the centre of what we do next year. We need to maintain our patient base more than ever in the face of falling margins. So we’re going to work on driving more benefits to our patients with even better service initiatives than ever. But we’re also going to keep a very keen eye on controlling back of house expenses in our business as best we can, as well as paying a lot of attention to how we buy our stock in and how maintain live and accurate records of it. Margin management is essential in a sector with falling revenues. www.mccabespharmacy.com Irish Pharmacy Retailer

IPR THE BUSINESS OF RETAIL
Last Min Xmas Many of us leave our Christmas shopping until the last minute, we get some last minute retail-boosting tips from Liz McKeon
G
et ready to boost your sales, enjoy the party season and look forward to a healthy start to 2015. Use the elements that captivate the senses of passers by, make them stop, come in and shop... Music and movement are traditional attention-getters, but aroma can be an overlooked resource to assist shoppers to part with their money in your salon. Sound, smell and visual merchandise will get attention where a pretty, but static and ordinary display may go unnoticed. Increase Gift Voucher Sales The Christmas season is always an opportune time of the year to make some profit for your pharmacy. Selling gift vouchers or gift cards is a great way to get your clients to come back and stay busy after the holiday season. Continue to focus on increasing voucher sales all year round to help maintain a healthy cash flow, ensuring that they will attract more clients on a continual basis. Here are just five easy ways to increase your Christmas voucher sales: Send an email newsletter to your database highlighting the benefits of gift vouchers. Announcements about gift voucher availability can help to increase voucher sales and promote your brand. Make sure to time your email distribution appropriately. A 10-day lead time before the Christmas rush is a good starting point. Ensure your website is up-to-date about how easy it is to purchase gift vouchers from you. Provide 56
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
lots of information about gift voucher availability, highlighting the benefits of giving a gift voucher to your pharmacy. Offer free gift wrapping. Clients and shoppers appreciate this extra touch and this step adds more perceived value to the purchase. Invest in some eye-catching envelopes, decorative ribbon or small gift boxes for your vouchers and turn it into a ‘real’ gift. Include a coupon or offer with purchase. Give the giver a small gift such as a free product, a coupon for a future service they can use themselves, or a salon voucher with a small amount already loaded on to it. Incentives to purchase a gift voucher can boost sales and encourage more clients to turn to you instead of a competitor when narrowing down the field of choices. Selling gift vouchers regularly helps to secure your business and the right marketing strategy can help promote your brand. Use some of these tips, ideas and suggestions to increase gift voucher sales and keep your appointment books full, even during the non-holiday season! Make Your Website Open for Business Ensure your website is completely up-to-date and ready for Christmas shoppers. On the home page, actively promote gift sets and vouchers. Make it easy and simple to order on line. Concentrate your marketing and selling efforts on the first five and third five days of the month. Most people get paid on the last day of the month or on the 15th, and research
has found that 64% of people spend the bulk of their discretionary income within the first five days after pay day. Ask for their birthday along with their email address. You can then email them or send them a handwritten card for their birthday along with a promotional offer. Customers who are committed to shopping online don’t need a discount offer in your email. Sixty-five percent of customers who visit, but don’t buy from your website today, buy tomorrow. They may have to transfer money into their credit card, check details about the recipient, etc. Don’t train potential customers to your site to expect a discount. Send invoices separately from vouchers or packages. Some online customers will send your products or voucher directly to their recipients. Make sure you don’t mail any products brochures or invoices which list the prices, ruining the gift experience for the person. Instead email the invoice directly to the purchaser. Plan and kick-start your Christmas retail and voucher campaign not, let December be your most profitable time of this year and the catalyst to a fantastic start to 2015.

PERFECT PITCH IPR PRE-CONCEIVE pre-Conceive Testimonials Hazel Hall is a 40-year-old, entrepreneur, healthcare practitioner, successful business woman and she’s now expecting. Hazel lives in Kells in Co. Meath and she is the owner/ proprietor and manager of two successful health food stores in Virginia and Navan. Hazel has been successfully trading away in her store in Virginia for the past 4 years and has recently opened up her second retail outlet in Navan this year. "I think when I found out I was pregnant, I was shocked. I am not sure why as I was trying to get pregnant but when you see that little blue line reality sets in then," says Hazel. Hazel and her partner found out that she was pregnant a few months before her 40th birthday. This is a growing trend in Ireland and the CSO puts the average age of a woman having her first child at 30.6 years. In the western world, Ireland being no exception, the trend of having children later in life is becoming more of the norm. This decision sadly, brings its own dilemmas. The older we get, the 'poorer,' our fertility becomes. This is a worry for a lot of women and their husbands or partners. One morning, a sales representative called to Hazel's store to introduce a new Irish product. Pillar Healthcare's pre-Conceive. pre-Conceive is designed as a nutritional support to aid in conception. Its revolutionary formula, designed by a Wexford based company, is applicable to any woman who is trying to conceive. This is just one of the successful conception stories from pre-Conceive. Pillar Healthcare's MD, Mark Whitney, who has recently just won an award for Wexford's Best Young Entrepreneur with his Local Enterprise Office says: "It is stories like this that make everything worthwhile. As Hazel mentioned, teaches and practices, good nutrition is crucial to your fertility. Sadly, the demands of our modern lifestyles create an extra demand for nutrients, but our nutritional intake is often sacrificed for more convenient meals when we are on the go. We are mostly fuelled by caffeine to a large extent and therefore we run on cortisol, the stress hormone. This sentiment is echoed by our medical advisor Dr. David Smallbone, M.B., Ch.B., L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S., M.F. Hom., F.C.O.H., who is the most recent past President of the Food & Health Section of the Royal
Society of Medicine (UK)." One-fifth of Irish people are diagnosed as infertile, this does not include sub-fertility. â‚Ź175 million was spent on IVF during 2011 in Ireland. Twenty clinics operating in Ireland provide fertility services. 30.6 is the average age of women having their first child in Ireland. 1/4 pregnancies end in miscarriage in Ireland. 40% of infertility diagnoses are attributable to female fertility parameters. 40% of infertility causes are related to male fertility parameters. 20% percentage of infertility attributable to unknown factors. 4% of children born in Ireland in 2011 were as a result of IVF procedures, Finland and Denmark have the same statistic. IPR MANE 'N TAIL
High Mane-Tainance Hair and beauty experts find some pharmacy-based products are the source of fabulous beauty outcomes.
T
his is definitely the case with the Mane ‘n Tail brand and Leonard Daly, one of Ireland’s leading hair and beauty consultants. Leonard recently opened the doors of the Mane ‘n Tail Salon School and reveals his guide to accomplishing the perfect blow dry every time, even when you have dry, coarse, thick and curly hair. Leonard recommends Deep Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as the ideal regular treat(ment) for your hair if it’s in any way dry, curly, frizzy or coarse. The micro-enriched formula strengthens your hair and the deep hydrating botanicals give a healthier shine than you’ll have felt and seen in years. Using only a small amount of the shampoo and conditioner it gently cleanses and conditions the hair and scalp, without a build-up of residue. A little drop goes a long

way, even in long hair. Vitamin E and Pro-Vitamin B5, along with Mane ‘n Tail’s key ingredient: olive oil, repairs the damaging effects of styling and the environment, while naturally replenishing from root to tip and locking in moisture. Here’s Leonard’s blow-byblow account of how to achieve the perfect blow dry: ✔ First of all, be sure to use Deep Moisturizing, a really hydrating shampoo and conditioner that won’t leave residue. ✔ If possible leave your conditioner in for 5 mins. You can apply Deep Moisturizing conditioner at the roots but concentrate on the midlength to ends. ✔ After towelling off the excess water, always use the Detangler if your hair passes your shoulders. ✔ Always use the Hair Strengthener
if you are going to use hot tools on your hair. ✔ Dry the hair until it’s about 70% dry, using your fingers. ✔ Use a HT brush with a metal core or a natural bristle brush. Always take small sections that are 2 inches wide and 1 inch deep. ✔ Be sure to keep tension on the hair as you are drying, if you feel the tension has slackened twist the hair away from your head and this will give you a smoother sleeker finish. See Leonard’s full Tutorial on the Mane ‘n Tail YouTube channel.
