CAMPAIGN FOR FOLIC ACID With less than one in four women taking folic acid before they conceive, women who are sexually active and who could become pregnant are being reminded of the need to take folic acid daily, irrespective of whether they are planning a pregnancy or not, a safefood campaign has urged. The campaign ‘Babies Know the Facts About Folic’ has been developed to encourage women to take folic acid supplements and help address Ireland’s high incidence rate of Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) like Spina Bifida among newborn babies. Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Professor Michael Turner, UCD Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, said “We know from recently published Irish research that three out of four women who attend for antenatal care have not taken folic acid supplements before they became pregnant. Taking folic acid daily as a supplement could potentially prevent two thirds of Neural Tube Defects every year – on average, that’s approximately 50 fewer babies affected every year.”

UEA SCIENTISTS SEPARATE MEDICAL BENEFITS OF CANNABIS FROM UNWANTED SIDE EFFECTS

receptor and a serotonin receptor. When it is blocked, THC can still exert several beneficial effects – including pain relief – while avoiding impairment of memory. The research was carried out in mice, but it is hoped that the breakthrough will pave the way for safe cannabis-based therapies that do not cause alterations in mood, perception or memory. Dr Peter McCormick, from UEA’s school of Pharmacy, said: “THC, the major active component of marijuana, has broad medical use – including for pain relief, nausea and anxiety. Our previous research has also found that it could reduce tumour size in cancer patients. However it is also known to induce numerous undesirable side effects such as memory impairment, anxiety and dependence. “There has been a great deal of medical interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms at work."

Cannabis could soon be a mainstream treatment, but in a more processed form. Scientists at the University of East Anglia in collaboration with the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona have found a way to separate the medical benefits of cannabis from its unwanted side effects. The research comes from the team that discovered how the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, known as THC, reduces tumour growth in cancer patients. Their latest findings, published in the journal PLOS Biology, reveal how the cognitive effects of THC are triggered by a pathway which is separate from some of its other effects. That pathway involves both a cannabinoid

PHARMACISTS RAISE €10,000 FOR MENTAL HEALTH Over 30 community pharmacists have collectively raised upwards of €10,000 for First Fortnight, a mental health charity aimed at challenging mental health stigma. The money was raised through a sponsored ‘Frontline Cycle’ covering 230km from Dublin to Galway which took place on Friday the 17th and Saturday 18th July. The ‘Frontline Cycle’ is an annual fundraising event organised by Mullingar-based pharmacists and brothers, John and Robert Keane, which encourages pharmacists to fundraise on behalf of a nominated charity.

IPR NEWS GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO MORE TO ALLEVIATE FINANCIAL BURDEN OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES New research from GloHealth reveals that 69% of parents spend over €500 per year on extracurricular sports activities for each child, an important but often overlooked cost that comes to the fore when children go back to school. GloHealth is also calling on the Government to help parents save money during the difficult September back to school phase by providing tax relief on sports club costs for their children. An overwhelming 93% of parents surveyed by GloHealth said that they felt tax relief on sports fees was a good idea, indicating that parents are becoming increasingly aware of the link between children’s activity levels and their overall health and wellbeing. Mairead Ronan, the well known radio and TV broadcaster (pictured above with some little helpers) teamed up with the campaign.

SOME INDUSTRY NEWS Muscular Dystrophy Ireland Calls on Government to Approve Vital Drug Treatment Muscular Dystrophy Ireland has called on the Government to approve a novel new treatment— Translarna—for certain people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to radically improve access to clinical trials for emerging therapies. The call was made as Muscular Dystrophy Ireland marked the second World Duchenne Awareness Day on the 7th of September. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a serious muscle-wasting condition that primarily affects boys. Translarna is the first treatment to address the underlying genetic cause of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, slowing its progression in patients aged 5 years and older who are able to walk. It is available in a number of countries in the European Union but has yet to be offered in Ireland. LA ROCHE-POSAY LAUNCHES ‘YOU SHARE WE CARE’ IN AID OF TEMPLE STREET

GP SCHEME CONCERNS 85% of pharmacists believe GPs will either not be able to cope with the extra demands of free GP care for under 6s, or will only manage to do so with difficulty. A new survey of pharmacists has revealed 24% of pharmacists do not believe GPs can cope with the extra workload that will come about as a result of the introduction of the scheme, while 59% say GPs will only be able to cope with the demands with difficulty. The pharmacy survey was undertaken by healthcare software provider, Helix Health ahead of the 2015 Helix Health Pharmacist Awards. Now in their tenth year, the Awards aim to celebrate pharmacy and raise awareness of the outstanding work being undertaken by pharmacists working in the professional network of 1,800 pharmacies

TV presenter Lucy Kennedy recently joined dermatological skincare brand La Roche-Posay to call on fans of the brand to share a ‘selfie’ with their favourite La Roche-Posay product. La Roche-Posay is known for developing products formulated for sensitive skin ensuring the highest tolerance and safety. La Roche-Posay has committed to donating €1 to Temple Street Children’s Hospital for the first 10,000 selfies shared on the website www.larocheposay.ie/yousharewecare.

nationwide. Commenting on the findings, Dublin pharmacist and Chair of the Helix Health Pharmacist Awards Committee, Fintan Moore said, “GPs are already struggling to cope with their existing workloads and many will find it difficult to cope with the extra demands of the free GP care scheme. Pharmacists could be doing much more, which would both ease the workload on GPs and improve patient care and accessibility to services. We should be delivering a minor ailments scheme, a new medicines scheme, chronic illness management, further health screening initiatives and expanding the existing vaccination service to include travel vaccinations as is the case with pharmacists in other countries. We are ready and able to do more. It’s time for the Minister to work with us to expand our professional role for patient care in our communities”.

IPR NEWS PHARMACISTS TO THE RESCUE With the average school age child expecting to get 3 to 8 common colds a year and 2 to 3 bouts of viral gastroenteritis a year, it is a sure thing that parents will be treating their children for minor ailments during the course of the school year. Pharmacists are reminding parents that it is possible to treat many minor ailments at home and have issued some practical tips for parents on treating the most common childhood conditions. Reminding children to wash their hands well both at school and at home is the first line of defence against becoming infected or spreading ailments including cold and tummy bugs, pharmacists say. Bernard Duggan, a pharmacist and Honorary Treasurer of the Irish Pharmacy Union, says, “School children are still in the process of building their immune systems to many infections caused by the bacteria and viruses that they are exposed to on a day-to day-basis. With children back to school it is inevitable that this increases their chances of becoming sick, as the majority of common childhood illnesses are contagious and caught from classmates, which are then often passed on to other siblings at home. Encouraging children to wash their hands regularly and properly is essential as it is one of the easiest ways to stop the spread of germs. Having wipes in a child’s schoolbag is a good idea as they can use them when required.”

IPR CHILDCARE & PREGNANCY

Mumagers What are new mums up to? And, are they looking after themselves? IPR Editor, Lucy Earley, finds out. ‘This house runs on love, laughter and cups of coffee’ - that’s the latest sign I’ve got on my kitchen wall. Unfortunately, coffee does seem to be my go-to instead of the recommended eight glasses of water and the perfunctory five-a-day. Seriously, who has the time for that? I’m not the only one - according 16

to a recent survey carried out by Pregnacare New Mum, a new postpregnancy vitamin range, only 25% of new mums admit to looking after their own health and wellbeing in the period of time post-pregnancy. I'm sure this is not really news for those of us who have entered into this demographic. The research

CHILDCARE & PREGNANCY IPR has been conducted in an effort to remind new mums of the importance of managing their own health and wellbeing so that they can bestcare for and nurture their baby. The research was launched by Jennifer Maguire, TV personality, RTE 2fm host and ambassador, who gave birth to her daughter, Florence Zamparelli, in Dublin in March 2015. According to the findings: mums, whether working or not, find themselves the ‘mumagers’ of the household with endless washing and tasks. 92% of Irish mums surveyed (who are the other 8%?!) said that they noticed a decrease in their energy levels since their baby had arrived. Despite the average adult needing seven to nine hours of sleep per night, almost two thirds of new mums (63%) reported that they only get four to six hours of shut-eye each night with 58% saying they never get a full night’s sleep without any interruptions from their baby. Over half of new mums surveyed (56%) are concerned that they are not consuming the right nutrients since their baby had arrived, with 45% reporting that they don’t have the time to cook themselves a wholesome meal since giving birth. MUMPRENEUR Even with their own version of 'The Neverending Story', i.e. laundry, cleaning and working, some Irish women just don’t rest. In addition to childrearing some are becoming product innovators. It’s easy to make a play on words when we want to pigeonhole individuals. But the term ‘mumpreneur’ is actually a positive new term in Ireland at the moment. To complement the babyboom, a small army of Irish mums are creating product solutions and are helping mums everywhere. It’s worth a look at their offerings.

BABYBOO Cork-based mum, Vicki O’Callaghan set up babyboo.ie in 2014. IPR THE BUSINESS OF RETAIL

Talk Back

Buiness guru, Liz McKeon on the power of positive feedback.

K

nowing how to give constructive feedback is one of the most important managerial skills to master. Do you know how to give feedback so that the other person: ✔ Wants to hear it? ✔ Can understand and act on it? ✔ Doesn’t get defensive, and ✔ Respects your opinion? Unclear feedback fosters a sense of helplessness and hopelessness in the workplace - because it offers no clues about how to improve and employees then become totally unmotivated. Poorly thought through feedback diminishes your credibility as a supervisor and inaccurate feedback is guaranteed to lead to resentment. The guidelines for giving constructive feedback fall into four categories: content, manner, timing and frequency. ✔ Content is what you say. In your first sentence, identify the topic 24

Irish Pharmacy Retailer

the feedback is about and provide specifics about what occurred. ✔ Manner is how you say the constructive feedback – how you say something often carries more weight than what you have to say. State observations, not interpretations, be direct, sincere and avoid giving mixed messages. ✔ Timing – feedback is meant to be given as close as possible to when the performance incident occurs, so that events are fresh in everyone’s mind. ✔ Frequency – use constructive feedback regularly to acknowledge real performance. Catch and respond to employees doing the job right just as much as you catch and respond to them doing something not quite right. Constructive feedback increases self-awareness, offers options and can motivate. Remember, it does not mean only giving positive feedback

– feedback about poor performance, given skilfully, can be equally useful and important, as an aid to developing a great team. Don’t just be a good boss, become a great boss. The ability to give feedback is one of the most important and difficult moments of truth that determine your effectiveness as a manager.

AT THE COUNTER IPR Top Tip! Tip for the trendy, smoky shading of eyeshadow facing the temple: fold a paper tissue, use the edge to make an extension of the lower lash line and hold in place with your thumb and forefinger. Use the Large Eyeshadow Brush to apply Eyeshadow No. 91A over the edge of the tissue. Re-apply for more intensity and switch to the other eye. Keep symmetry in mind. A second variation is to place an adhesive strip, since this will make it easier to achieve a symmetrical application below the highest point of the eyebrow and the inner corner of the eye. Prime the lashes with Artdeco's Volumising Mascara Base and complete the eye make-up with the Volume Supreme Mascara. The eyebrows are defined using the Eye Brow Filler. Trace the contour of the lips with the Soft Lip Liner and shade the colour pigments of the lip liner to the centre of the lip. IPR ALTERNATIVE ZONE

Aroma Therapy? IPR begs the question - does it work?

H

itting its pinnacle of popularity circa 2000, aromatherapy was very much in vogue in the late 1980s and 1990s. And now, there’s somewhat of a resurgence in not only essential essences but plant and nut oils and their anti-ageing and clarifying properties. But while the majority of us agree that essential oils smell nice, do they alleviate or cure mild to serious health issues? Does adding essential oils in skincare products benefit the skin?

38

Irish Pharmacy Retailer

What is it? You will will surmise that aromatherapy’s not a new practice; the Egyptians (as always) were at it thousands of years ago, and the ancient Greeks, Chinese and Romans also used forms of aromatherapy. It’s actually a form of herbal medicine, and while we don’t usually associate cold remedies with aromatherapy the first vapour rub was invented in 1894 by a Victorian, Lunsford Richardson, who mixed peppermint, eucalytus and camphor together as a salve for

his children when they suffered from a cold. It’s probably the most famous form of aromatherapy to this day. Therapeutic Effects While it’s not always easy to prove that vapour-based aromatherapy for mild to serious complaints works, there have been positive studies to back up its potential. Dementia In one study (Dr. Jimbo, Tottori University, Japan, 2009) a hospital

ALTERNATIVE ZONE IPR IN SKINCARE Irish skincare brand Kinvara uses omega rich plant oils, vitamins, antioxidants, essential oils and active ingredients in formulas that support skin and are rooted in traditional herbal medicine, Ayurveda and scientific innovations. Using essential oils in this combination can ensure that skin is clean, not stripped, calmed and continually moisturised. The proof is in the pudding as Kinvara’s Absolute Cleansing Oil (€19.95) won the Irish Spa Awards 2014 ‘Best Cleanser’ award. Go to: www. kinvaraskincare. com

ward was suffused with either lavender oil in vapour or water vapour for two hours continously. Interestingly, it was noted that the residents, all of whom suffered from dementia, had a noted decrease in agitated behaviour after the suffusion of the lavender oil. In another study (Dr D. Kennedy Northumbria University, 2006), 71 people with severe dementia were treated with lemon balm, diffused in the air. There was a marked improvement in aggressive behaviour.

Smokers In a study of forty-eight smokers the inhalation of a black pepper vapour reduced the desire for the first cigarette of the morning. (Dr. Rose, Durham University, 1994.) Topical Oils Almost completely separate to breathing in the effects of aromatherapy, topical essential oils are a little more promising, with cases of tea tree oil helping fungal issues such as thrush or athlete’s foot.

Conclusion While it can't be completely proved, aromatherapy in its many forms uplifts us, and oils in their virgin state such as macadamia, avocado, sweet almond, olive, omega plant oils etc. are anti-ageing powerhouses in their own right and are not to be ignored. Irish Pharmacy Retailer

any pharmacies receive the majority of their income under the main government backed schemes such as the GMS and DPS/LTI Schemes. But, a drawback of this is that withholding tax is withheld on 20% on the fee element of the State payments. This can cause cashflow problems; in particular when this income is a substantial portion of the overall pharmacy income. This potential problem can be dealt with by the pharmacy accounts team or financial advisors by doing the following: Submitting the corporation tax return for the company as soon as possible after the financial year end. This means the annual financial statements should

40

be completed and agreed within close proximity of the year end. The business should have a target that its corporation tax returns are submitted within 4 months of the year end. Post the submission of the corporation tax return; interim withholding tax claims can then be submitted by completing a Form F50. We recommend completing one every 3 months. The refunds will begin to flow in after an amount is withheld equal to the previous year’s corporation tax liability. By doing this, the cashflow of the business is immediately improved by an amount equal to the annual withholding tax less the previous year’s corporation tax. For this to

Management of VAT refunds Any delays in seeking a VAT refund can put cashflow pressure on the business. We recommend the following: If the company is on a bi-monthly VAT return it should submit this return as soon as possible after the end of the VAT period. At the same time the invoices giving rise to the VAT refund should be submitted directly to the local tax district. If the company is on an annual VAT return then the monthly direct debit should be reduced to a nominal amount throughout the year. If you follow this course it is important to increase it back to an appropriate amount at the beginning of the following VAT year. Amendments to the monthly VAT direct debit is restricted to 3 per annum. If the refit is going to result in a significant overall refund before taking account of the direct debits then then it may be appropriate to inform the Revenue Commissioners that the VAT return will be submitted for a shorter period of time. Overall, if you do not take control of your taxation situation in conjunction with your finance professionals your business could be starved of cashflow. But this is up to you, the Revenue Commissioners will not do this on your behalf! recent decision of the US Supreme Court has found that Abercrombie & Fitch had discriminated against a job applicant by refusing to hire her on the basis that her head scarf or “hijab” clashed with its “classic East Coast collegiate style” dress code. This high profile case has led to a number of questions from Irish based employers on the issue of employees wearing religious garments and jewellery to work. The Abercrombie issue arose after a job applicant wore her hijab to an interview which the interviewer assumed the applicant wore for religious reasons. Staff members in that company were advised not to ask applicants about their religion. The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) claimed that in not asking, the company had violated equality guidelines and essentially created a loophole allowing for religious discrimination. In an 8-1 vote, The Supreme Court ruled that Abercrombie should have asked the applicant or at least told her of the ban so she had an opportunity to volunteer the information at which point the company and the applicant could have discussed how the headscarf might be accommodated in the workplace.

of religion is prohibited and one can safely assert that the wearing of religious garments or jewellery would come under this definition. Therefore, if an employer were to forbid the wearing of religious garments then the employer would be required to objectively justify the reasons behind that rule.

What’s the Position in Ireland? Cases of discrimination or unfair dismissal on the grounds of the wearing religious clothing are quite rare in Ireland and as such there is no precedent or case law to highlight what way the Irish courts or tribunals view this matter. The Employment Equality Acts do specifically state that discrimination on the grounds

Learning points It is difficult to determine with any great certainty what an Irish tribunal would determine if faced with a similar scenario. In the US, Abercrombie were deemed to have discriminated against a job applicant on the basis that the company had a positive duty under US law to reasonably accommodate religious

The UK perspective Given the lack of Irish cases in this area, it is quite useful to look at how the matter has been addressed in the UK. In the case of Azmi -v- Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council [2007] IRLR 434, the UK EAT considered the fairness of a dismissal of British Muslim teacher won the basis she refused to remove her religious veil (or ‘niqab’) in the presence of male colleagues. The school argued that the veil meant that children could not respond effectively to her teaching. The UK EAT found that she had not been discriminated against on the religious ground on the basis that removing the veil was necessary for her to perform her teaching job effectively and also the EAT were satisfied that a non-Muslim person would have been similarly instructed to remove a veil from their face had they worn one also.

practices. In the UK, however, it was found that the school had not discriminated against an employee for demanding she remove her veil as the school would have applied this policy rigidly to every job applicant and employee, irrespective of religion. However, these two cases do provide some useful guidance for employers in Ireland if considering a ban on certain garments. If an employer was to impose a dress code, they would have to justify the reason for doing so and make sure that they are not indirectly discriminating against an employee. The following reasons might be able to justify such a policy: ✔ The impact such garments have on an employee’s ability to perform their work duties. ✔ Any health and safety risk associated with such garments. ✔ Any industry rules in terms of protective equipment. For example, in the UK Azmi case, the decision to dismiss was justified as it was concluded that the face-veil was obstructing the employee’s ability to communicate effectively with students and therefore inhibited her abilities to perform her duties appropriately. However, in the Abercrombie case in the US, there was no indication that the wearing of the headscarf would inhibit job performance as a sales assistant. Therefore, an employer will need a justifiable reason connected to a real business need, a genuine role requirement, or a health and safety requirement.
