THE LATEST NEWS COSMETIC ASSOCATION CELEBRATES JUBILEE YEAR The Cosmetic Association celebrated its Silver Jubilee year on the 24th of January at the Cliff Town House on St. Stephen’s Green. After the fabulous meal, Director Jo Somerville gave an eloquent speech, mapping the many years of the Association. “On reaching our Silver Jubilee year there have been many positive elements in our ongoing success, not least, the biggest event to date in 2013, with 49 members exhibiting in the Main Hall and Hall 3 of the RDS. The interest shown by the previous members in rejoining the organisation, and the welcome they received, has been the most positive business move
in the last 25 years,” Jo commented. “The future of The Cosmetic Association is bright and healthy. Already for 2014 we have had a number of enquiries from new members, and extra space requested by some existing members. There is always turnover in membership, as with any organisation, but if we can keep our numbers to the current level and provide the service we give, we are on our way to the next Jubilee celebration!”

TANORGANIC WINS ULTIMATE NATURAL BEAUTY BIBLE AWARD The Irish-owned TanOrganic brand has won the 'Ultimate Natural Beauty Bible Award'. It’s now the the first ever self-tan to be included in the Green Beauty Bible. There was extremely stiff competition for this illustrious award and over 2,400 women tested for this particular edition. This is another massive achievement for TanOrganic in 2013, following up from winning multiple beauty awards and securing a listing in Mothercare in Ireland, the first time that the retailer has listed a self-tan among its product range. When TanOrganic founder Noelle O’Connor first embarked on her mission to create a natural self-tan different from anything else on the market, she decided that she wanted a self-tan that was free from parabens, synthetic ingredients, artificial colours, perfumes and drying agents. She spent years working on a formula that was made completely from natural ingredients that could be used by everybody, regardless of their skin type. She wanted a product that would not only give a flawless finish, but also nourish and protect the skin and fade perfectly. This was achieved in 2010 when she launched TanOrganic self-tan. The Beauty Bible is the ideal place to seek the (real) truth about products in the beauty industry. With over 2,000 independent testers thoroughly examining products and sharing their opinion, it’s a great source of information about beauty products.
IPR NEWS SURVEY AND ROADSHOW ON IMPROVING PHARMACY PROFITS IS LAUNCHED One of Ireland’s leading category management Jenny Maybury of Category Solutions companies, has carried out a comprehensive survey into the pharmacy shopper in terms of behaviour and expectation. Commissioned by Category Solutions and conducted by research firm, Behaviour & Attitudes, the survey also assesses the nature of the shopping mission to help understand how to increase the average weight of purchase. The survey found that (among many other findings):

however only 47% bought something else even though they were in-store for typically 5 to 10 minutes; the opportunities to increase this 47% figure are immense. Very limited shopper activity was reported off the main thoroughfare of the store – more needs to be done to “interrupt” the customer with visual cues – they are more responsive to recommendations by the pharmacist. 3 out of 10 shoppers don’t plan pharmacy visits. 15% of shoppers say they visit when prompted by offers/windows. 18% of customers make unplanned purchases (with great potential to increase this).
New Profits Roadshow As a result, Category Solutions will be hosting a series of roadshows in Cork, Limerick, Wexford, Kilkenny, Galway, Sligo, Athlone and Dublin commencing Wednesday the 2nd of April and onwards, inviting pharmacies to come along to a local hotel for a three-hour interactive session. A brief research presentation will be followed by an overview of what shoppers really want; followed by a one-to-one session where Category Solutions will spend time reviewing each pharmacy that attends in terms of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Further details of dates and venues are available now by contacting Antoinette Fahy on 086 0426622. Places cost €195 each. 10

UNFAIR RATES LAW TO CHANGE An archaic, pre-famine law (1838) in relation to rates is set to change this year. The current law provides that businesses that move into a property are liable for up to two years of the previous tenant’s unpaid rates. The amendment to the law has been approved by TDs and is to be signed into law by the President shortly. The amended law will mean new tenants will be able to move into a new premises without being forced to pay for a predecessor’s unpaid rates. The move should free up the retail economy as well as giving the commercial property sector a boost.
There is also a separate amendment to the bill, which will affect those who are liable for unpaid commercial rates if a property is sold. The cost of any unpaid rates will now be deducted from the sale price when the property is sold.

T
he recent, and very poignant demise of Mount Carmel, and its aftermath, once again highlighted the fact that we’re in the middle of (a somewhat tapering) baby boom. Even if the baby boom is slightly slowing down, current or prospective mums are inundated by TV alone with constant ads for baby products. It’s a very active marketing demographic! The State of the Nation Children's report in 2013, a two-yearly report, which is published by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, has shown us that Ireland has the highest

percentage of children in the EU. According to the Central Statistics Office the average age for childbirth is 32.0. Baby Massage So, for a professional woman who has lived a busy life beforehand, it must be a daunting prospect to (even if planned) find herself pregnant and subsequently with the ‘fourth trimester’, i.e. the actual infant. How can pharmacists and pharmacy staff help with scared new mothers? There are other services apart from ante-natal vaccines and OTC advice.
A good thing to advise fraught mothers to take up is baby massage. For some new mums, especially those who used to spend their Friday nights out with the girls drinking white wine and eating tapas, that maternal bond may be hard to form straight away. Baby massage is a proven way to establish a relationship with your baby and infant massage can have numerous physical, psychological and emotional benefits, including: Aids the bonding process by encouraging interaction between mother and baby Helps baby to relax

Aids baby’s sleep patterns Positively affects infant hormones that control stress Reduces crying Relieves colic and wind Toddlers who are regularly massaged master major motor skills more easily Helps support weight gain According to Hilary Hooks, founder of Active Mum baby massage classes: “Touch is one of the most significant and nurturing early experiences your baby will have. Nurturing touch has long-term benefits and can impact how we think, feel, and relate to
others, and most importantly, how we value and care for ourselves. Infant massage greatly enhances the early bonding relationship between parents and caregivers and their babies. Learning massage also helps build parents’ confidence and trust in their parenting skills,” she says. “And it can help babies with sleep problems, teething pain and colic.” Hilary Hooks’s Top Baby Massage Tips & Techniques: Unlike adult massage, there is no kneading or pummelling. Movements are slow, soft and

frequently circular. Establish eye contact and talk to your baby throughout. Using oil will help reduce friction and make the massage more soothing. Use a product that is gentle enough for baby’s skin. First-pressed organic sunflower or olive oil is perfect, or products such as Bepanthen and other baby moisturisers such as Baby Bee® Nourishing Baby Oil. Massaging baby too soon after a feed might cause her/him to vomit — so mums should wait at least 30 minutes after a feeding. Start the upper body massage with your hands on baby’s shoulders. Make gentle strokes in towards the chest. Massage baby’s arms by stroking from the shoulders down towards the wrists. If baby’s tummy feels soft (not hard or full), massage his belly using circular, clockwise strokes. Babies’ tummies are sensitive, so if s/he gets unsettled, move on to the next step. Use your fingertips to massage your baby’s face. Stroke from the middle of her forehead, down the outside of her face and in towards her cheeks. If your baby is still relaxed once you’ve finished massaging the front of his/her body, you can turn them onto their tummy and use long, smooth strokes from head to toe. Use respectful touch and stop the massage if your baby is not enjoying him/herself or is showing signs of discomfort. It’s also best to avoid a massage if you’re very tense, or if your baby is agitated or upset.

Peninsula Business Services on managing pharmacy HR costs in 2014
U
nfortunately, all reports indicate that 2014 will be no less difficult on employers than 2013 was. Despite the difficult economic conditions, the early part of the business year allows an opportunity for businesses to manage and plan costs. It’s important to proactively plan for the future needs of the business, here are some tips: Temporary Workers Employers need to be able to anticipate staffing needs, and actively be able to manage and match supply and demand. The increased use of temporary or specific purpose contracts can help business through busy periods, where they know they will only need that role for a certain period of time. Managing Expenses Employee expenses (e.g. travel or food) can be extremely costly for employers - if not managed correctly. Employers are encouraged to have a clear and unambiguous policy, which sets out clearly the circumstances in which a claim can be made. In addition, is there a cheaper alternative? Can that driver take a route that does not involve two tolls? Managing Annual Leave The vast majority of employers are operating workloads with minimum staffing levels, and a major headache can arise when several employees request leave at the same time or, more disruptively, when several employees have excessive leave days
remaining at the end of the year. Employers are advised to take control of annual leave through a clear annual leave policy, which will in turn ensure that the business in effectively staffed throughout the year. One useful tip is to require employees to take a minimum number of days leave per quarter and, if they fail to apply, then the employer can apportion leave to that employee by giving them one month’s notice. This will ensure an even spread of leave days from January to December. Managing Absenteeism Absenteeism can have a significant cost for businesses in terms of lost days and reduced productivity. A Survey on Workplace Absence in Ireland carried out by Graphite in 2011 showed that one-third of employers had changed their practices with regard to absence management in order to rein in the associated costs. This is not surprising when you consider that reports have shown that absenteeism costs the Irish economy as much as €560 million per annum. Some simple tips for managing absenteeism and reducing costs include tightened policies, improved absence monitoring, and carrying out return-to-work interviews. Managing Overtime Several employers have contacted Graphite HRM to outline that they have difficulties with their overtime bill. Employers can effectively rein in these costs by specifically instructing staff that only ‘manager approved
overtime’ can be worked. Employers are encouraged to have an express policy on this, and implement it strictly across the board. Effective Policies An employer cannot underestimate the importance of having effective policies to deal with all eventualities. We have considered annual leave, absenteeism and overtime – but have you got a policy to cover scenarios where you can’t provide work due to inclement weather? What about a flexible working policy or a layoff/reduced hours policy to deal with temporary shortages of work? With effective policies in place an employer can effectively manage costs with minimal risk and without having to take the dreaded step of implementing redundancies.
PENINSULA BUSINESS SERVICES There are many options that can be tailored to suit your business needs, if you feel any of the measures discussed above would be cost effective to your organisation, then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will guide you through any changes you need to implement. matte bronzer can really accentuate and sculpt your features to emphasise your natural beauty. While applying bronzer - remember the aim is to highlight your main features so bear in mind that you can always add colour, but it is much more difficult to subtract it; so, as with all TanOrganic products, less is MORE. This year the show will be on in the RDS on the 18th, 19th and 20th of May. So save the date! Most of the Association’s usual members are exhibiting again. Some of the bigger companies are taking more exhibition space, which is a very positive reflection on the event.
“There are five or six new members already accepted and about three or four in the ‘pending’ tray!” commented Jo Sommerville, Director of the Cosmetic Association. “Along with previous exhibitors, the new members will bring colour and variety to our event. We are expecting a wonderful turnout and hope that all our Pharmacy buyers will set aside a while from your very busy schedules to come and personally see the excellent new products,” Jo added.

IPR THE BUSINESS OF RETAIL
Front Of Shop
Retail Expert John Hogan takes us through the 5 steps to planning a thriving front of shop in 2014.
A
t the start of 2014, it is promising to be a very tough year with Government cutbacks leading to a more uncertain future. To put the future firmly back in your own hands, the Front of Shop needs to make up a significant part the shortfall. In a recession this is not easy, but with the right focus and actions, you can make it happen. For a reasonably managed pharmacy with 300k front of shop sales, the objective is to grow sales by 10%, improve margin by 3% points, tighten costs to give an extra contribution of 30k to bottom line, while reducing stock by 50k -70k. For one that hasn’t had enough attention, payback will be much higher. The 5 steps to this are:
Organising yourself and your team Category Planning Buying Cost Control Customer Service. Let’s go through them now in more detail: Organising yourself and your team The first thing is to give yourself thinking time and have a team (no matter how small it is) who are good at what they do and can be relied upon. The main areas of the business that need to be covered are trading, buying, marketing, administration/finance. Make sure that someone has clear responsibility for each of these areas (even if they already have a day job). The most important thing about a team is having square pegs in square holes, 34

i.e. make sure that they are doing what they are good at, otherwise this will cost you dearly. Don’t be afraid to delegate, people like to be given responsibility. Lead by example, it’s amazing how much your team are learning from you (consciously and subconsciously). Lead well and they will follow you anywhere. Next have an agreed meeting schedule to plan and review business. This is not a talking shop. You will need to have weekly, monthly and six-monthly meetings rather than adhoc discussions that may be in place now. A suggested agenda for each is above. The most important thing is that each member of the team reports on their own area in a forthright way explaining what went well and what needs to be improved. Factual information is critical here (see the graph on the next page), without this, they will be frustrating and speculative. Without these meetings, a lot of expensive decisions will be left
behind, compounding problems in an already difficult sector. Doing this well will be highly motivational all round. Category Planning There have been a number of excellent articles throughout the year in IPR on category management so we won’t go into this again. In summary, measure your space, compare to sales and margins, open up on what is working, cut back or eliminate what’s not working. Review your customer base to see if you are properly catering for their health/beauty/essential needs. Bring in newness and a good perception of value. It is not that hard to do and by spending an hour reading up on it, you will drive €000s to your bottom line in 2014. The sense of achievement is also great as an area that once seemed to be beyond control comes into your control. It also allows you to be creative, try new layouts and promotions and then
THE BUSINESS OF RETAIL IPR measure whether they are working and keep what is good and move on quickly from what doesn’t work. Buying Buying more effectively is the major area where you will improve your margins and sales, yet too often we hand over control to the wholesaler or Sale Rep. We have heard of too many stories of how a supplier pushed a special offer which ended up as excess stock. If they work - great, but too often they don’t and tie up your cash, and later when you have to mark them down to clear them out then your margins suffer. Good buyers get control of the meetings they have with their suppliers’ sales representatives. If the sales rep comes to the meeting with their sales reports and you do not have your information to hand, then you are immediately on the back foot. It can take quite a bit of time to compile your reports in advance of these meetings but it is worth it. Armed with the right information you can look for help on slow movers and failed promotions before they launch into their pitch on their latest offers. Identifying the 20% of the products that drive 80% of the sales will also help keep focus. Finally, investigate buying groups to see what they can offer you in terms of buying prices, branding and operational support. For Pharmacy groups, central ordering works very well. The fewer people ordering the better. With a good system, you will be able to set stock targets, use replenishment to reorder much more accurately than a store/ Supplier Rep combination and use an Open to Buy tool which will work really effectively on skincare/fragrances/cosmetics/gifts, where overall budget control is very important to keep stock levels in order. Systems like Real World Retail’s decision support system will be invaluable for making light work of these tasks with just the click of a mouse.
Cost Control Perhaps the least exciting part of managing a retail business is in the area of cost control but it is now more important than ever. Staffing is one of your biggest costs so this is the first one on the agenda. The days of providing a 9-5 day for your pharmacy and retail staff are over. After all, that is generally not how your customers shop and you should align your staffing to their needs not your staff needs. Monitoring this weekly will establish how to do your roster so that you don’t have the cost when customers are not shopping and they are there to ensure good customer service. Analyse your sales and prescriptions by hour by day so that you can roster your team effectively. A tough line should be taken also on other costs including rent, each year landlords are becoming more realistic about the world we find ourselves in. If there are Bank Debt issues, the sooner these are resolved the better, this will allow you to get focused back on real business. Keep a close eye on refunds and discounts, do you have issues, do you need to adapt your refund policy? Customer Service Footfall is a challenge for other retail sectors but a pharmacy already has traffic in the door to the dispensary, but what are you doing to get them to spend more in the front of shop? McDonalds Restaurants train new cashiers in 30 minutes and in this time they not only learn how to operate the till and place orders with the kitchen, they also learn how to upsell. Lots of jokes are made of “Would you like fries with that?” but it is estimated this adds as much as 10% to McDonald’s bottom line. We are not saying it is as easy as this with pharmacy staff, but it is not that difficult either. Customers really value the advice that they get
from their pharmacy. You have a trusted relationship. Some good care and advice on OTC could result in them moving their dispensary business over to you, which would be a really big payback. We would recommend that you track individual cashier upselling performance to identify further training needs. Again, this is a standard view with us but you may be available to derive it from your EPOS and then review regularly. To sum up, a portion of your dispensing sales and margins will disappear with PCRS cutbacks, but there is still a very good business model in pharmacy. But it will not happen by default. Put plans in place for 2014 to make your business better and more efficient. Plans count for nothing without proper execution, this will require leadership, drive, discipline and determination. Do this right and you will have a different business at the end of the year with a motivated and satisfied team.

What’s hot and new in the world of make-up.
Step 1:
Step 3:
Choose your base using Durable Cream eye shadow (Golden Dew, €15.95). Apply all over the lid and right up to brow bone using brush number S14.
Using brush S11 apply another darker shade, Preferably three shades darker than the one previously used (e.g. No. 425 Eyeshadow-in-a-Box €13.95). Using brush number S11, apply to the outer edge of the eye in a V-shape smudging along the lower lash line. Use your blender brush to soften and blend the shades together. Use brush S11 to build the shade and brush S09 to soften, repeat this until you reach the desired Smokey eye.
Step 2: Using a darker shade (Bronzing Sunrise €15.95), apply to the socket using brush number S11. Starting from the outer edge apply inwards. Use circular motions to blend the eye shadow, until you create a natural looking contour.
AT THE COUNTER IPR Good products for this are MUS 436 Shimmer or Golden dew.
BEAUTY NEWS
Step 5: Using a liquid or cream liner apply to the lash line as close as possible (Cream Eyeliner Black - €19.95). I like to extend the liner out which gives the effect of a bigger eye. Finally, a good coat of our 4D mascara (€19.95) to really finish the look. Make-Up Studio is available from select McCabe’s Pharmacy stores including Dundrum, Clare Hall,

The Windows To The Soul We take a look at eye health, in particular Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). This condition can affect your eyes, as you get older. It’s actually the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Ireland. According to amd.ie there are 7,000 new cases diagnosed in Ireland each year, and it is the leading cause of sight loss among the over 50s.

A
ge-Related Macular Degeneration occurs when the macula, a small area of the eye, which is responsible for central vision, starts to deteriorate. It can be a slow process (a more common diagnosis called Dry AMD), or it can be more rapid, if there are leaky blood vessels within the eye. This latter form of AMD (Wet AMD) is more rare. Early symptoms involve the blurring of straight lines and images can seem distorted. The good news is that if either form of AMD is caught in time it can be treated with some success in many cases. The even better news is that the Waterford Institute of Technology has been carrying out studies and trials for several years on AMD using nutritional supplements, with some amazing results. So, are there alternatives to medication or complete cures to be found in supplement form? And if so, is medicine and science finally making that big step of marrying nutrition? We take a look at some alternative/nutrition-based supplements. But, do they work? Bilberry Extract Bilberry extract is a common ingredient in alternative eye supplements. Historically bilberries have been purported to aid in the improvement of night vision. This idea was helped by propaganda during World War II. A rumour began to circulate that RAF pilots had started to replace other forms of jam for bilberry jam. They accredited the humble bilberry to their improved night vision. What was happening concurrently was the introduction of radar, which allowed the pilots to be more accurate in their raids. The rumour being circulated was that it was ‘something in their diet’ - to put the Germans off the scent.
This propaganda has stuck with alternative health practitioners ever since, with very little research carried out into actual concrete results. Does it work? Bilberries do contain anthocyanosides, which have been found to be beneficial in diabetic retinopathy, but very little study has been carried out so far. A double-blind placebo-controlled trial where fourteen people with diabetic retinopathy were treated with bilberry (where damage is caused to the retina by diabetes or hypertension) found significant improvements in the treated group. But the size of the study was relatively small. Is it Safe? In trials animals have been fed large amounts of Bilberry extract with no adverse effects. However, little is known of potential negative effects in pregnancy, nursing or young children. Even if it hasn’t had concrete testing in relation to eye problems, it has been proven to be helpful for haemorrhoids (in oral use, in case you’re wondering!) and in reducing triglycerides. Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-Zeaxanthin What are they? They are the three

carotenoids (organic pigments found in fruit and vegetables), which have been isolated by researchers of AMD, most notably the team at Waterford Institute of Technology’s Macular Pigment Research Group. They accumulate in the central retina, where they are collectively known as macular pigment. Taking this combination of carotenoids in the diet can help restore the macula and slow down, or in some cases, reverse AMD. So the old ‘eat your greens’ saying is very much true! “The question we are asking is how to optimise this pigment at the back of the eye,” explained Dr Nolan, Principal Investigator at the Waterford Institute of Technology’s Macular Pigment Research Group (MPRG), back in 2012. “Our approach is to optimise nutrition for the eyes, which we hope will protect the retina through the ageing process – and even produce improved ‘super-vision’ for those with normal eyesight.” Do they work? The trials at WIT are proving very promising so far. One lady, Norah Norton (70), who was diagnosed with AMD in 2006 joined the MPRG trial. After six months of using the supplement prescribed by the MPRG her sight had improved significantly. Within a year she has described her eyesight as being nearly perfect. The trials continue. Are they safe? So far there’s no evidence to the contrary, however the best advice to say to customers who want to avoid AMD is to give up smoking, eat a healthy diet with plenty of green cruciferous vegetables and lose weight if there is a weight issue, as obesity is also a contributing factor. AMD cases rise in Europe every decade due to the fact we have ageing populations, so it’s time to sit up and take note of preventative measures. Irish Pharmacy Retailer

IPR THE BUSINESS OF PEOPLE
The ABusiness Communications Expert, Liz McKeon examines the concept of teamwork.
A
ll pharmacies need to look at how work is organised in a positive way - to help pull through tough periods. Different times call for bold and brave thinking. Do you have the right team, working together to achieve your business goals? The T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) concept is a very powerful because when team members work together for the good of all, the good of the pharmacy and its customers, everyone achieves more. Simply put, working together works! Teams are complex machines, and it’s not surprising that they malfunction occasionally, or need re-alignment and teambuilding. For your team to work effectively, you need agreement on exactly what sort of team you are: what are your goals, what’s each employee’s role, who needs to work closely with whom? Sometimes it’s as simple as learning more about the people you work with, and sometimes it’s more complicated.

But the bottom line is: it is almost impossible to have a financially successful pharmacy without a happy team working together – in other words, it’s less ‘me’ and more ‘we’! Here are some positive aspects of teamwork: Goal Orientated: The highest priority for team members is achieving the team’s
goals. Does every member of your team know and understand your pharmacy’s financial and business goals? To function effectively, members of a team must be flexible, trust one another, and support every member of the group in its progress towards achieving a successful pharmacy environment.

staff working productively without misunderstandings. Better Decisions: Decisions and solutions are made with everyone generating more options. Group decisions are usually better than what even the brightest person could come up with alone. The entire team learns to pitch in for the highest good of the pharmacy. Today, more than ever, it is vital for the success and survival of your pharmacy that all employees work well in a team environment. Collaboration Collaboration is a big benefit when team members pull well together. They want the team to shine and be successful; they willingly invest themselves in the team effort. Communication: When pharmacists, pharmacy managers and counter staff have all
learned to support and trust one another, they share what they know freely and communication becomes another benefit. The way people communicate with one another (both in words and non-verbal clues) reflects how they feel about working with one another, but it also builds the team’s effectiveness. Excellent communication is conducive to

IPR PERFECT PITCH DOES THEFT AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT! The number of incidents of retail crime and customer theft in Ireland is rising. With customer theft continuing to be the most prevalent, so what should you be doing about this? Ronan McCullagh, industry expert on retail security gives an insight into the current issues facing retailers and some tips on what we can do to mitigate this risk. Ronan has five key generic actions that all retailers should be taking, namely: 1) Team training A well trained team is your greatest asset against shop lifting. A company policy and training on shoplifting will ensure your team are well equipped when faced with the difficult situation of confronting a shoplifter or alerting security. Highlighting certain characteristics to look out for and having defined approaches and responses will give confidence to an employee as well as ensuring true customers will not end up offended. 2) Awareness Shoplifters have certain characteristics and behavioural traits, so always be aware and look out for the following: Avoiding eye contact Erratic shopping behaviour An appearance of being rushed Leaving the store and returning repeatedly Watching the staff movements - possibly looking for opportunities An alert employee will spot these, maybe the person is “known”, these are triggers for your “Plan of action” 3) Plan of Action If an employee’s suspicions have been raised, then having a “plan of action” in place as part of your company policy will allow for a coordinated response. The goal is always to deter the potential thief and welcome the paying customer. This should start by alerting the manager, who in turn will instruct the staff to move onto the shop floor under the guise of greeting customers and offering assistance.
60
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
Courtesy and attention are good for business and bad for shoplifters. 4) Product Placement Ensuring that high risk products are placed in the eye-line of your team to help protect the product, while avoiding high shelves in front of the till area ensures good visibility, a deterrent in itself. Avoid placing high risk products near the exit and note that narrow, cluttered aisles make a thief’s job easier. 5) Advertise against shoplifting Post warning signs stating a rigorous shoplifting policy and a hardline approach to would be shoplifters. Place these in hard to watch areas and where you have high risk. Be clear and concise in your message and it will send an unambiguous signal to any potential thieves to take their trade elsewhere. Implementing all of these tips is just part of protecting yourself against shoplifting, a consultation and review of your premises conducted by a security expert is recommended to ensure the highest possible deterrents and security steps are taken to minimise loss to your business from this type of crime. Gemini Retail Security has agreed to carry out a FREE security evaluation for readers of Irish Pharmacy Retailer which can be arranged by using the contact details below. PERFECT PITCH IPR THE FINAL SPOT Skin breakouts, the curse of puberty and beyond. Cases of adult skin breakouts increase each year in Ireland due to mainly hormonal factors. It can strike out of nowhere, even if you were never afflicted with spots in childhood, and can occur up to the age of forty. Recently, XposĂŠ presenter Lisa Cannon admitted to suffering from the onset of severe spot breakouts, which started suddenly and has shocked her with its debilitating consequences. How do spots start? Severe spots begin when the negative effects of DHT (Dihydro Testosterone) act on the oil glands. The Enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase converts Testosterone to DHT. DHT binds to Androgen Receptors on the oil glands resulting in excessive oil production. Excess oil obstructs the skin's pores producing whiteheads and blackheads. Bacteria feed on the trapped oil causing inflammation, infection and visible spots. What is Clearogen, and how does it work? Clearogen is the first blemish treatment of its kind that uses scientifically proven natural ingredients to address the hormonal cause of breakouts and disrupt the first step in the formation of spots, reducing excessive oil production by the sebaceous glands.
