VIVISCAL HAIR CONFESSIONS LAUNCH Viviscal launched their research findings into female hair loss at its ‘Hair Confessions’ evening on the 16th of April in The Residence Club, Dublin. Maia Dunphy (pictured above), Psychotherapist Anne Colgan and Model Pippa O’Connor were on the panel of experts for the launch of the research that found (among other things) that: � 72% of Irish women would choose a healthy full head of hair over healthy glowing skin. � 54% said that hair thinning, or loss made them feel less confident, sad, self-conscious or worried. � 84% of those surveyed said that when their hair looks good they’re more likely to go after what they want, make an impression or be social.

� 84% of those questioned said that when their hair looks good they have a spring in their step and feel invincible! � 68% of Irish women questioned have noticed some excess shedding, thinning or hair loss. � 40% blame stress and poor diet for hair thinning and hair loss. HEALTHWAVE LAUNCHES NEW COURIER PRESCRIPTION SERVICE Healthwave, the Dundrum-based pharmacy that hit headlines earlier this year - due to its active matching of cross border prices for generic medications - has launched a pharmacy courier service, HealthPass, which is compliant with Irish legislation. With free delivery anywhere in Ireland, Healthpass members can now receive their prescription medication without having to travel repeatedly. IPR NEWS LET’S BE LEAN! The School of Pharmacy at UCC is embarking on a unique initiative in Ireland using the concept and principles of Lean Management. The Lean concept was developed by Toyota and supports the identification of wasteful activities in a healthcare process that does not enhance the patient experience, and provides a means to remove or reduce them. The School of Pharmacy is hosting this Lean based educational and consulting programme for all pharmacies across the South / South West Hospital Group to be delivered by the international healthcare improvement organisation, the Leading Edge Group. The objectives of the programme is to educate and empower pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians in the use of techniques and methodologies

NATIONAL BABY DAY A third (33%) of Irish parents struggle to spend 30 minutes every day simply bonding with their child / baby according to new research conducted by Nurofen for Children. The research showcased an insight into real Irish parents for Ireland’s first-ever National Baby Day, which was launched on Wednesday the 5th of March. The research revealed that the main reasons for parents struggling to find time to bond with baby are work commitments (75%) and household duties (73%) followed by tiredness (42%). National Baby Day aims to look at real Irish parents and encourage them to simply take baby steps when it comes to parenting with 8

SOME RETAIL NEWS FOR YOUR PHARMACY SHOP FRONT GRANT SCHEME LAUNCHES The Shop Front Grant Scheme was launched by Deputy Mayor Eamonn Tuffy in the Lucan Spa Hotel on Wednesday 2nd April and by Mayor Dermot Looney on Thursday 3rd April in the Maldron Hotel, Tallaght. A number of local retailers and interested parties attended the events. The scheme is intended to improve the appearance of independently owned shops fronting public streets and in turn make the streetscape more attractive to shoppers and visitors alike. There are a variety of possible improvements covered under the grants scheme ranging from improvements to individual shop fronts or a parade of shops. Grants of €800 up to €4,000 are available and further details can be found at www.sdcc.ie. Applications for this grant scheme will be accepted up to 30th May 2014.

RETAIL SUPPORT FORUMS South Dublin County Council has approved a fund of €20,000 for the commencement of a series of Retail Support Forums throughout the county. The aim of these forums is to meet with retailers to gain a better understanding of the issues facing businesses and encourage networking on a range of issues specific to the retail sector. NEW NATIONAL PHARMACY NETWORK LAUNCHES IN CORK

RETAIL SALES IMPROVED IN JANUARY 2014 Retail Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the retail sector, has said that CSO figures published for sales in January showed strong growth. Commenting on the figures, Retail Ireland Director Stephen Lynam said: “As the economy continues to recover in 2014, retail sales should also improve. Retail Ireland forecasts consumer spending will rise by over 1% this year. While CSO numbers are broadly encouraging, there have been false dawns before sales have risen, only to fall back again. At the same time, employment data showing a fall of 3,000 in the numbers in the wholesale and retail sectors highlights the continued problems facing the sector, despite overall employment growth in the economy.”

Sixteen well-established community pharmacies across Cork have joined Allcare Pharmacy; marking the first stage of a national rollout initiative that sees a network of over 64 community pharmacies join the 100% Irish-owned Allcare Pharmacy Group. Allcare Pharmacy is committed to strengthening the role of the community pharmacies and supports over 462 jobs across the 64 local pharmacies. Homegrown Baby Editor (and expectant mum) Lucy Earley takes a look at the Irish baby product boom.

O

ver the last few years Ireland has seen healthy entrepreneurial growth in the early years sector; products geared towards babies, mothers-to-be, new mums and small children. Irish entrepreneurs, some of whom are parents themselves, have taken a long look at the market and seen gaps where they feel a product is needed. Some Irish ‘baby’ entrepreneurs started their new businesses through job losses during the recession and have turned their luck around. Others have expanded on their current business or diversified, taking slight risks in desperate times, that for the most part have paid off. 14

o “Survive and Thrive” has to be the motto for any business in Ireland in 2014. It’s about making what you’ve got work to its revenue generating maximum. In Category Solutions we have carried out in-depth published research showing that there’s still a lot of untapped profit opportunities especially in the pharmacy sector. Category management is the quick fix to earning more revenue and we’re one of the leading experts in Ireland. What the Research Found: While 58% of customers interviewed had visited the pharmacy for

prescriptions, 42% were there for something else. Therefore, the front of shop is increasingly important and an area that needs focus. But what about the rest of the business? Is it performing well, drawing in customers; holding them in the store to browse more and make additional non-prescription purchases? If the answer is no, then it’s time to look at category management. Category management is essentially a quick way to improve pharmacy layout and range. And, if you were tempted to think that neither were especially important, think again.

Key points raised in the research are: � The continuing recession has caused profound changes in how we shop. We’re now proud to save money (look at the popularity of Aldi and Lidl) so deals and special offers are important. Shoppers interviewed in the research felt that independent pharmacies should offer loyalty schemes such as those in Boots or larger chains, to re-inforce selection and reward more frequent visits. Labour Days HR experts Peninsula Business Services discuss the role of seasonal workers and short-term contracts.

W

e are entering into the summer season and a potentially busy period for many employers. This welcome increase in business can also bring with it certain challenges for an employer, none less than the requirement for extra staff. Some companies may only find themselves requiring additional staff for a particular season, such as hotels and restaurants, and so will need to tailor their staff contracts accordingly. This requirement for seasonal workers, if managed correctly, can provide a huge advantage for employers as they can increase their staff numbers in line with demand. However, if managed incorrectly it can leave an employer exposed by having workers on the books during off peak times and potentially maintaining continuity of employment. A way of managing this issue is by looking at the types of contracts being issued to staff members and using the best type of contract to suit your business. If a company has a defined period in which they wish to hire workers for (let’s say, a three month busy season, or a six month maternity cover contract), then an option available to them is a fixedterm contract. This type of contract is for a defined period of time and will expire on a particular date. A fixedterm contract provides a degree of flexibility for an employer as they can take on the staff member to cover this particular period and the contract will cease on a specified date. An alternative to this is: if a company has a particular project running and requires additional resourcing then they can bring on employees on a specified

purpose contract. This type of contract is used where there is no certainty as to when the exact job will end, however the employees are brought on to cover a particular task or project and when this project ends the contract will terminate. Casual Workers An additional option open to employers is that of a casual worker. Casual workers are defined as parttime workers who work on a casual basis, have less than 13 continuous weeks’ service and who are not in regular or seasonal employment. Casual workers can be brought in on an ad-hoc basis as and when there is work to be done and this can provide the employer with a large degree of flexibility. The danger with casual contracts is if the employee continues to work beyond 13 weeks they are effectively classed as a part-time employee, and as such, the company would need to look at terminating their employment in the same way they would a permanent employee. term or specified purpose contracts to suit your needs. If you require a degree of flexibility in the weekly working hours you have available, we can look at drafting variable hour contracts. Or should you need to extend fixed-term contracts we can provide letters to this effect also. We can also advise employers on the casual worker scenario and if it would suit your business. The seasonal worker can be a valuable addition to a company’s workforce, and when managed correctly can offer significant advantages in terms of flexibility and additional resourcing. However, care needs to be taken to ensure that the right contract is provided to avoid leaving the company exposed down the line. unning your own pharmacy can consume an incredible amount of time and energy. To avoid feeling burnt out, set yourself strict work-life boundaries. Retaining a personal life outside of your business may seem like an impossible goal at times, but with the right strategies in place, you can successfully achieve a manageable work life balance, most of the time... Top tips to achieving the perfect work life balance for you: � Draw a line between work and home. Get into the habit of separating the two, when you are at work, you are at work, when you are at home, you are at home. � Always stop for meals. On average most pharmacy owners work a minimum of 64 hours per week. Taking care of yourself and establishing healthy eating habits is vital in order to have the energy required. � Make a practice of ‘switching off ’. You need to build in uninterrupted thinking time into your day, away from technology and the expectation of immediate response. � Outsource wherever you can. Think about what you could delegate and to whom. � Filter your calls and refrain from taking unscheduled calls during your working day. � Make time for a holiday. � Set priorities. To feel more balanced in life and business, set priorities and create lists. � Manage your time. There are 24 hours in the day, ideally 8 for work, 8 for leisure and 8 for rest!

Life changes fast. Conventions and beliefs of the past are not necessarily right for the future. � Develop your own rules! Life balance is a personal thing. It must be what works for you – not what someone else decides. Work life

balance and personal happiness do not necessarily depend on earning more money or expanding your pharmacy business. Other factors can have a much bigger impact on our well-being. Age, and ‘life-stage’ particularly affect what makes us happy and balanced, as does our personality, which stems from our genetic type, up-bringing and life experiences. There is no single model that is right for everyone, and no single approach is right for anyone for their whole life. We cannot simply become happier by wishing it. Growing Your Retail Floor In our Business of Retail feature, John Hogan - Principal of Rhodium Retail advises on maximising your profits.

ith so many external factors affecting our retail business, it is easy to forget that there is a huge scope for growing or protecting our profits in areas that are entirely under our own control. Many retail shop floors comprise of product ranges that are performing well and other ranges that are expensive shelf fillers. Identifying these poor performing areas and replacing them with better ranges is

an essential part of growing your sales and margins. Measuring your retail space This exercise should not take any longer than an hour or two for an average pharmacy. Firstly, list all of your departments on a sheet down the left. Next, get a measuring tape (one metre will do) and measure how many linear metres that you are giving to each department (a linear

metre is a one metre length of a standard floor fixture). Start with your standard floor fixtures and write in how many metres are being given to each department. If a department is taking up two shelves out of four shelves and a shelf is 0.8 of a metre, then it has 2/4 x 0.8 = 0.4 metres. This is not that hard to do, get someone to help you if needs be. Next start on your wall fixtures, these generally will be higher so they are

calculations for each department and you will have a total number of linear metres for each department. I would be very surprised if all of this took you more than an hour or two, so make sure you get it done. The most important thing is that you have calculated fairly how much space is being used by each department Sales per Metre Now the hard work is done, put your yearly sales next to each department. Divide the number of linear metres into the sales to give you sales per metre. Divide this by 52 to get the sales per metre per week. It will look something like the table above. worth more. If your wall typically has six shelves, whereas your floor fixtures have four, then multiply your wall fixtures by 1.5 as they will carry 50% more stock. Finally, you will have miscellaneous fixtures on the floor that will need measuring. Use what is called the displacement method on these, if you emptied that stand on to a standard floor gondola, what proportion of a metre would it take up? Extend the

What to do next? On the sheet above, we can see that our average sales per week per metre is €120 per week. That’s now our new yardstick. Look at department 4, is that a waste of time? As a minimum it needs to be cut back and more space given to those departments that are performing better. Department 10 needs more space, are there more ranges that we can buy to expand this space? For each

department, what do we need to do to increase customer satisfaction and sales? The overall aim here is to weed out the poor performing ranges, which of those poor performers do you need to carry? Once you have worked this out, this will tell you how much extra space you have available for new ranges and more facings for existing ranges. Don’t be afraid to trial new products, these are an essential part of growing sales. Over a period of time, replacing poor ranges with better ones and constantly measuring your sales per metre will grow both your sales and your profits.

How do you help your pharmacists to overcome resistance to change that may occur with established clientele? Haven Pharmacy is a brand that has been created by local, independent, community pharmacies who wanted to remain local, independent and community focused, but with the added benefits of belonging to a group structure. The reaction to the changes from the community has been extremely positive. Customers realise very quickly from day one of the change that they will continue to be served by the same staff (many of them have been for generations), who can now offer them improved health services, a brighter store environment and even better value.
