THE LATEST NEWS AFTER ANALYSIS – THE COSMETIC ASSOCIATION CHRISTMAS TRADE FAIR The annual Cosmetic Association Christmas Trade Fair took place in the RDS Main Hall, Ballsbridge from the 18th to the 20th of May 2014. There was a record number of exhibitors at the trade show this year with many of them ensuring that they provided the trade with a wide range of product at competitive prices. The attendance was also a record, with over 1,200 attendees representing over 1,400 pharmacy doors. Trading on Sunday was brisk with many independent pharmacists and pharmacy staff using their day off to attend the show. Trading on Monday and Tuesday was frantic between 11am and 3pm with attendees travelling from as far as Wexford, Belfast, Cork and Donegal. The association’s exhibitors appeared to be very happy with the sales they achieved at the show, reporting low to middle single figure percentage growth on 2013. The general consensus from

COLOUR DASH – SOME COLOURFUL FUNDRAISING!

The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) has welcomed the announcement that up to 34 medicines previously available on prescription only could now be available from a pharmacist without prescription. Kathy Maher, President of the IPU, said that the move would greatly benefit patients by giving them better access to a wide range of medicines under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. The IPU, which represents 2,100 community pharmacists across the country, has been calling for this move for a number of years. The HPRA list includes medicines for the treatment of migraine, acid-reflux symptoms, hay fever, cold sores, muscle pain and inflammation, fungal skin and nail infections and other inflammatory skin conditions. A survey carried out earlier this year by Behaviour & Attitudes on behalf of the IPU showed that 70% of people strongly agreed that pharmacists should be able to prescribe some medicines for minor ailments.

Just under 3,200 people took to Phoenix Park, Dublin, on Saturday 26th July as part of the Irish Cancer Society’s Colour Dash. Colour Dash is a fun 5k with a difference, at each kilometre participants are pelted with colourful powder paint. ‘Dashers’ started the route wearing a white t-shirt that was quickly transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour. Over a tonne of paint was thrown at the event by a host of volunteers and staff, which is sponsored by Crown Paints. 100% of the money raised from

IPR NEWS OLDER PEOPLE ARE MISSING OUT ON THE BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH EXERCISE New research has found that the majority of older people across the island of Ireland are not meeting recommended levels of exercise. The study, funded by the Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI), led by Dr Elaine Murtagh (Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick) examined the relationship between health and physical activity among older people using official datasets. The resulting report underlines the importance of remaining active as we age. It also highlights the need to develop innovative programmes to encourage those who are most inactive including older women to take up some physical activity. Moderate to high levels of physical activity are associated with health and cognitive benefits with some research suggesting that just 15 minutes of outdoor walking four times a week can reduce mortality by up to 50% (Fortes et al, 2013). Key Findings:

� A weekly level of 150 minutes of moderate to high intensity physical activity is recommended for older adults. � Only 37% of 60-64 year olds in the Republic of

BUDGET 2015 MUST CAPITALISE ON RECOVERY Chambers Ireland has said that Budget 2015 provides an opportunity to ensure that economic growth and job creation is balanced across the economy and the country. Chambers Ireland Chief Executive Ian Talbot said, “While some regions and sectors of the economy have seen a nascent recovery, there are many areas still facing tough economic conditions. The Government must ensure that measures introduced in Budget 2015 support local economic development, encourage job creation and promote balanced growth.” “It is vital that no new taxes are introduced in Budget 2015. Immaculate Conception Infertility is rising. Recent figures from the World Health Organisation show it to be at one-in-six in the western world. It’s a shocking figure as it translates to in one-in-four from the age of 29/30. Pillar Healthcare Limited is a new Irish company that was established to provide a possible nutritional solution to the growing issue of infertility and sub-fertility in Ireland. Mark Whitney of Pillar Healthcare recently talked us through their new product: pre-Conceive.

O

ne in four couples of reproductive age who walk into our pharmacies every day are trying to conceive. It's also worth mentioning that one-infour to one-in-five pregnancies in Ireland will end up in miscarriage as well. For a developed country, this is extraordinary, but not unique to Ireland. Infertility has often been categorised as a ‘female problem,’ and to a good extent, so has miscarriage. This is not the case. The scientific community 16

has recently established that causes of infertility are equally split between men and women. Roughly, male factor infertility can account for up to 33% of infertility diagnoses with an equal number of diagnoses being female related. The final third is known as unexplained infertility. This effectively means that we cannot identify the cause of why couples can't conceive. In respect to miscarriage, the causes are split equally between men and women. After all, men do bring 50% of the DNA to the party.

Suspect DNA will not allow for correct fertilisation, cell division and subsequent growth. Since the early part of the last century, fertility standards have been in rapid decline. In Scotland in the 1940s, the average sperm count was 113 million/ml. When re-examined in 1990, that value had dropped to 66 million/ml. In 2006, the International Committee for Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies announced that 3 million children had been conceived through IVF



IPR CHILDCARE & PREGNANCY alone. In the United States over one eight-year period, there was a 128% increase in the number of children born through IVF. In Finland, 4% of all children have been born through IVF. The number of fertility clinics in Ireland has also risen sharply over the past 15 years. The Irish Times quotes an existing 26 fertility clinics in Ireland and in 2011, 3,000 children were conceived in Irish fertility clinics. The current statistics wouldn’t leave you feeling very optimistic. The fertility trend in this country and others is declining - and declining rapidly. There are several causative factors in men and women, most of which we associate with general poor health; why should our reproductive health be any different? A general lack of nutrition, poor lifestyles, chronic stress, hormonal issues are generally involved in poor health and the same are cited in reproductive health. Age and age-related infertility has to be factored into account. In the US at the moment, over 20% of women are having their first child after 35. In Ireland, the average age of our first child is 30.6 years (this figure is inclusive of youth pregnancies). It is also reported that one in fifty babies born in the UK is a result of IVF treatment, which is only one of seven Assisted Reproductive Technologies. In a report written for Pillar Healthcare by Dr. David Smallbone, M.B.,Ch.B.,L.R.C.P.,M.R.C.S.,M.F .Hom.,F.C.O.H., there is a strong correlation between declining nutrient intake and modern lifestyle practices and our declining fertility rate. Dr. Smallbone has several areas of expertise including his Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and is a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences. “Excluding any obvious physical or chemical abnormality is important 18

- in both sexes. However, another important factor, for both sexes, is the general state of health, including their nutritional status. There are many nutritional factors that play a role in failure to become pregnant. Over the last 50 or so years, and in some cases even longer, the nutrient content of our food has become considerably different to that of our forebearers. Many of our foods are deficient in vitamins, minerals and other nutrient materials,” commented Dr. Smallbone. “Lifestyle modes have been fairly universally adopted that are not conducive to fertility and fertilisation. Private Dietitian Caroline Brosnihan of Connacht Nutrition & Dietetic Clinic examines the causes, and how to advise your customers on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

D

id you know that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects one in seven adults?

What is IBS? IBS is commonly characterised by symptoms such as bloating, excess wind, abdominal pain and altered bowel habits (diarrhoea and / or constipation). These symptoms can create anxiety and stress, interfere with busy schedules and may compromise everyday life. What causes IBS? The underlying cause of IBS is

unknown and a number of factors may trigger symptoms. There is no diagnostic test for IBS. Diagnosis is made based on symptoms. It is therefore important to work with medical professionals to exclude other serious gastrointestinal (GI) conditions (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease or bowel cancer) and also some gynaecological conditions. If your customer is experiencing symptoms of IBS it is important not to ‘self-diagnose’. Coeliac disease should be ruled out before trying other diets. Symptoms of IBS can also be seen in other GI

diseases and disorders and may require medical rather than dietary management. Changing your diet can also mask underlying problems. Triggers for IBS can include gas or pressure on the intestines caused by certain foods, medications or even emotions. Sometimes another illness, such as an acute episode of infectious diarrhoea, can trigger IBS. Using antibiotics may also be a factor because they disrupt the normal bacterial flora living in the bowel. How is IBS treated? In most cases, people can successfully



IPR NUTRITION control mild symptoms of IBS by learning to manage stress and making changes to their lifestyle and diet. If symptoms are either moderate or severe, you may need more help. For moderate symptoms of IBS, the doctor may suggest fibre supplements or over the counter medications to help control diarrhoea or constipation. In some cases, patients may be given drugs that affect certain activities of the nervous system to relieve painful bowel spasms. Finding ways to deal with stress can be extremely helpful in preventing or alleviating symptoms of IBS. Regular exercise, yoga, massage or meditation can all be effective ways to relieve stress. Managing IBS with diet � Have a regular eating pattern. Patients should aim to eat little and often - rather than eating large portions. � Have adequate fibre in your diet. The amount of fibre a person needs will vary depending on their symptoms, tolerance of high-fibre foods and current fibre intake. � Drink between 1.5-2 litres of water daily. � Take a probiotic. It is advised that if someone chooses to try one of these products, include it daily for four weeks at the dose recommended by the manufacturer. If no improvements are noted then an alternative brand may be considered. � Reduce stress. � Rule out food allergies. What if the above methods do not alleviate the person’s symptoms? The next step is the ‘low-FODMAP’ diet, which was developed in Australia and due to its success in IBS symptom management has been 28

adapted for patients in the UK and Ireland. The low FODMAP diet has been published in international medical journals and is now accepted and recommended as one of the most effective dietary therapies for IBS. have shown that ingesting FODMAPs exacerbates symptoms in most people with IBS, while dietary restriction of FODMAPs improves symptom control. 75% of patients had no IBS symptoms after going on the lowFODMAP diet! I have trained extensively in delivering the low-FODMAP diet. My patients often report that aspects of the diet are difficult to follow, but compliance rates are high, with 77% following the diet most of the time. A skilled dietitian will be able to individualise the diet accordingly for patients who may struggle with certain aspects of the diet. It is likely that the more strictly the diet is followed the quicker the symptom response will be, but most people take between 4-8 weeks to improve. Pharmacies are a good way to spread the word and the educational message about the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms because they have broad reach and regular contact with community members and the general public. ositive thinking brings inner peace, success, improved relationships, better health, happiness and satisfaction. It also helps the daily affairs of life move more smoothly, and makes life look bright and promising. Ask yourself: � Are you willing to make a real inner change? � Are you willing to change the way you think? � Are you willing to develop a mental power that can positively affect you, your environment and the people around you? Positive thinking is contagious. People (including customers) pick up on your mental moods and are affected accordingly. Think about happiness, good health and success, and you will cause people to like you and desire to help you, because they enjoy the vibrations that a positive mind emits. In order to make positive thinking yield results, you need to develop a positive attitude towards life. Effective positive thinking that brings results is much more than just repeating a few positive words, or telling yourself that everything is going to be all right. It has to be your predominant mental attitude. It is not enough to think positively for a few moments, and then let fears and lack of belief enter your mind. Some effort and inner work are necessary. Think positive and expect only favourable results and situations, even if your current circumstances are not as you wish them to be. In time, your mental attitude will affect your life and circumstances and change them accordingly. 32

When you learn how to think positively, you gain the key to changing and improving your life. It’s easier to keep a positive frame of mind when things go well. It is tougher to do so when in the midst of problems, difficulties or obstacles. In such times you will need more effort, attention and patience. If you learn how to think positively when not under pressure, stress or strain, it will be easier to do so when things are tough. Here are several tips on how to think positively: � Display a more positive emotional and mental attitude towards yourself, other people and situations. � Refuse to participate in negative inner dialogues. It’s just a waste of time and energy. � Don’t allow disappointments, difficulties and obstacles affect your moods and state of mind. � Refuse and reject negative thinking. Either replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts, or engage yourself in some activity that will divert your attention from the negative thoughts. � Don’t allow what people think and say affect your mind and mood. � Associate with people who bring something of value into your life. Avoid people who sap your energy and enthusiasm. � Say positive things about yourself and about other people. � Compliment people when you feel they deserve it. � Have faith in yourself and in your abilities. � Try doing new things or old things in a new way. Doing things differently will help you be more creative and

therefore more positive. Go to a different restaurant, eat different food, change the way you dress, start reading a new book or find a new hobby. Read about people who overcame hardships and succeeded in life. Set goals - no matter how impossible this might seem at the moment and keep yourself busy working on them. Each goal accomplished, no matter how small it might be, will bring you more confidence, self-esteem and positive thinking. At least once a day, think and try to come up with more ideas on how to think positively in various situations. Be careful what mental images you let in into your mind. How you see yourself and your surroundings make a difference to your thinking. It's like watching a video. Eject the old video cassette or CD and insert a new and better one instead. Finally, analyse your behaviour and attitude, and ask yourself why you are repeating the habits or attitudes that you dislike. There is no need to follow old patterns of behaviour that you don’t like or don’t make you any good.

The Seven Deadly (retail) Sins John Hogan gives us his list of Seven Deadly Retail Sins along with their corresponding virtues. You may find yourself guilty of one or two; or perhaps even several. That being the case, you can rest easy in the knowledge that along with repentance comes total redemption. Hopefully, this list will prompt you to come up with your own personal list of retail maladies - which is the ultimate goal!

Over-buying This one is obvious. The consequences of this 'sin' include reduced margins due to high markdowns, cluttered shops, confusing ranges, stocks that are out of balance, slow turnover, poor cash flow, and increased expenses. Virtue: Replenish using your sales information, oversee this centrally, don’t buy into bonus stock that you can’t sell, review your ranges at least once a year. Remember your stock is bought to be sold, not to act as expensive wallpaper.

Under-buying Perhaps not as obvious, but a 'sin' none the less. When underbuying occurs, sales opportunities are missed. This problem is generally caused by lack of buying organisation. Virtue: Replenish on the first week of the month for all suppliers buying about 5-6 weeks stock. Top up as required later in the month focusing on your top sellers. You will have fewer deliveries without affecting your cash flow.

Not attending Trade Shows Not attending tradeshows on a regular basis is a retail 'sin'. This is the perfect opportunity to keep your shop fresh and one step ahead of the competition. New lines can be discovered, orders already written but not yet shipped can be reviewed, supplier relations can be nurtured, and major retailers in the area can be shopped. Virtue: Attend trade shows at least twice a year to see what’s happening in health and beauty. Being first to your area with new merchandise means that customers will always visit you first.

No Markdown Strategy Markdowns in and of themselves are not a problem. Markdowns taken at the wrong time, in the wrong amount and for the wrong reasons are a BIG problem. Excessive markdowns taken at season end can be very costly if the ranges were overbought to begin with. Proper monitoring of sales and stock during the season can help prevent

costly markdowns at season end. Remember – the first markdown is the cheapest – so make it count. Virtue: Again, don’t buy more than you can sell. When you do promotions, ensure that they are well located and advertised, make sure that you have fresh new stock to replace the reduced lines in order to recover your margin.

Not Controlling Operating Expenses If you pay too much for rent, chances are the only ones making money will be the landlord. Review payroll/ staff productivity and other costs annually and compare to industry benchmarks. Virtue: Develop an operating costs budget and review at least once a year.

Under Utilisation of Technology There was a time, not long ago, when only a handful of cutting edge retailers embraced the latest technology of the day. Today, not understanding and using technology puts today’s pharmacy retailer in jeopardy of being

Speak to your existing suppliers to see how you can get more out of your existing systems first. Remember, your aim is higher sales, margins, lower markdowns and stockholding.

Poor Planning Poor planning is almost as dangerous as no planning at all. From a forecasting perspective, poor planning can be to blame for many of the “sins” described above. From an accounting perspective, poor planning can lead to poor cash management which is the life blood of most retail operations. Virtue: Have a Calendar for Range Reviews and Promotions, ensure that you have a P&L budget in place. Plan all big buys of expensive/seasonal items so that you can get a high sell through. All of these are very common

but also straightforward to fix with proper attention. Very often you can become very good at something once you become aware of a failing. Here too, there is the opportunity to make virtues out of these sins and really improve your retail business. Wouldn’t it be much worse if business was this tough but there were no failings that you could improve upon?

Doc Time

As the autumn and winter seasons loom, what are your rights in relation to medical appointments, do you need to pay staff for appointments out of the office, or should they book them in their own time? Pensinsula Business Services finds out.

Generally, employers do not need to pay staff for time taken off for attending appointments such as doctors or dentists appointments, or any other medically related meeting. The employee is not at work; therefore does not need to be paid. However, contracts of employment should be checked, to ensure that there is no contractual provision entitling the employee to full pay during time taken off for this reason. The key consideration with this issue is the content of any written company policy, such as a sickness absence policy. Although medical practices are attempting to cater more and more for patients who work full-time hours, it is sometimes not possible for an employee to control the time of their appointment so that it does not impact on their working day. If the employee is a flexi-worker, or works part-time, it may be easier for them to attend such appointments outside of working hours; however, it may be too restrictive and unreasonable to expect this of all of your employees. They will generally be told by the practice when to attend for their appointment and will have no say in this if they want to be seen promptly. As such, clarity in company policies is absolutely essential. For example, what if your company has a sick pay policy whereby staff members are paid some or all of the wages when out on sick leave? Does this policy specifically exclude or include medical appointments where the employee isn’t sick, per se? It is very much advised that employers include specific clauses which address this 48

circumstance in their employment documentation encouraging employees to make these appointments outside of their working hours. Another key consideration is the custom and practice within an organisation. If you have always paid employees for such time off then you may be bound to do so going forward as it may be deemed an implied term and condition of employment. Remember, if you do not pay for such time and this has always been your custom and practice, then this does not mean that other arrangements can’t be made with the employee where they can still be paid. For example, can the employee take the time as annual leave? Can the employee be paid for the absence but work back the time at a later date? What About Antenatal Classes? The situation is different when the employee is pregnant and the appointment is for antenatal care. A pregnant employee is entitled to take time off work with pay during normal working hours to attend antenatal appointments. The right applies regardless of length of service, size of employer or the number of hours worked by the employee per week. The right also extends to travelling time and waiting time in connection with the appointment, not simply the

time spent in the appointment itself. Antenatal care can include relaxation and parent-craft classes, so is not just limited to medical examinations. Other than for the first appointment, the employee must provide at least two weeks’ notice of her appointments unless there are exceptional circumstances, which make such notice impossible. Furthermore, the employee must produce a certificate confirming that she is pregnant and an appointment card (or similar document) from a registered medical practitioner, or a registered midwife, showing that an appointment has been made. Most employers are not aware that fathers also have rights in respect of paid time to attend antenatal classes. Fathers are entitled to paid time off to attend the last two ante-natal classes, but this is a one-off entitlement and does not apply to all pregnancies. Employees requesting time off for medical appointments is a common issue that all employers face. If you are unsure of how to handle the matter then Peninsula can assist. Over the last 12 months since becoming LloydsPharmacy our Marketing and Sales team have been very busy managing our launches. We have launched four new stores, two franchise stores in Tullamore and Westport and two new greenfield sites in Kinsale and on the former site of the Meath Hospital in Dublin 8. We have two further franchise store launches in Ringsend and in Galway city in August and October and three more direct acquisitions launching. With franchise launches we always

strive to ensure that the heritage of the owners is recognised so that customers know that the same great team are still onsite. Our key objectives of launches are to drive existing and new footfall into the new / re-opened store, create fun and excitement and increase awareness of the store. This is achieved through a number of ways, LloydsPharmacy highlight the store opening in the local media, and we also use local and national PR plus social media platforms. We have a comprehensive training programme in place for franchisees and their teams, which begins with an induction programme and this programme helps the team understand what it means to become a LloydsPharmacy store. Further practical and knowledge based training is carried out by our Learning & Development team prior to the store launch but also on an ongoing in-life basis. In terms of the established clientele we reinforce that the owners and team remain the same. We co-brand our external signage ensuring that the owner's name is part of the signage and respect the heritage of the owner who has built the business up over a number of years in the community. What is Megawhite? Many tooth whitening treatments use hydrogen peroxide to remove stains, but some studies have shown that this chemical may be carcinogenic and could weaken the teeth. Megawhite is different. It uses sodium bicarbonate to gently, yet thoroughly, lift stains out of the deep pores in your teeth. How does Megawhite work? The sodium bicarbonate solution is applied to the teeth via a gum shield, which is inserted into the mouth. A laser is then directed at the gum shield where it activates the whitening formula, causing it to release oxygen and pressure. The oxygen and cleaning agents alter the colour of the teeth from brown/yellow to white without affecting the structure of the tooth’s enamel. What happens after the treatment? The treatment process shouldn’t last any longer than around 20 minutes so it’s the kind of treatment you can squeeze into your lunch hour! Everyone is different, but most people can expect to achieve average results of around 9 shades lighter, depending on the severity of the staining before treatment. After the treatment the pores on your teeth will remain open for around 30 minutes so it’s best to avoid eating until after that time, and try to stick to light coloured foods and drinks for the first 24 hours after treatment. Most clients tend to have around three or four Megawhite treatments per year, usually before special occasions.
