The symptoms of ovarian cancer can be very vague, and they often appear at a late stage. It is important for pharmacists to be aware of these symptoms: • Bloated feeling • Persistent swollen abdomen • Trapped wind

• Pain or dragging sensation in the lower abdomen or side. • Vague indigestion or nausea • Poor appetite and feeling full quickly • Changes in your bowel or bladder habits. For example, constipation or needing to pass water urgently. • Abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding (rare).

BUDGET 2014 insights Preparations for Budget 2014 are in full swing. Previous suggestions/hints from the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton that the Family Income Supplement could be reduced, if there was a higher minimum wage, were neither confirmed nor denied. The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny commented: "Let me say that it is part of our Programme for Government that there will not be any increase in income tax. We believe that this is fundamental in the context of the creation of jobs, not to put obstacles in the way of jobs being created." PHARMACIST, James Geraghty, Raises €15,000 for Temple Street Childrens' University Hospital James Geraghty of Molloy’s Lifestyle Pharmacies and Health Stores recently presented Temple Street Childrens' University Hospital and Mayo Roscommon Hospice with a cheque for €15,000. The proud occasion was a result of a fundraising effort on behalf of James, who took part in the Marathon Des Sable in April, in aid of the two charities. The Marathon Des Sables is a six day, 151 mile (243km) endurance race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco and has been described as the toughest footrace in the World. Temple Street Childrens' University Hospital and Mayo Roscommon Hospice both received €7,500 each as a result of a mass fundraising effort by the Molloy's Lifestyle Pharmacies and Health Stores Group. After completing the once in a lifetime challenge that is the Marathon Des Sables and understanding the enormity of the event, James Geraghty has been overwhelmed by the response and support from his customers, associates, colleagues, family and friends. Commenting on the final fundraising results, James said: “I am humbled by everyone’s generosity and support. I wish to thank each individual person who supported me in fundraising for this event. We are delighted with the final amount raised and are grateful for every single euro which was contributed to the cause; particularly in the current economic climate."

IRISH SMEs NEED WEBSITES! Almost three-quarters (73%) of Irish SMEs without websites have voiced concerns about losing potential business to competitors that have already moved into the digital sphere, according to a new survey. More than half of the SMEs surveyed revealed the reason they didn’t have a website was due to a lack of time, funds or knowledge to get one up-and-running. The study, conducted by domain name registrar, Register365, also found that many small firms in Ireland assume it will be too expensive to create a website from scratch. Two-thirds (61 %) of respondents were unaware that it can cost less than €100 a year to build and host their own website. Stephen Ewart, marketing manager of Register365, said: “It’s clear from the results that SMEs need help taking their businesses online. In the difficult economic climate we’re in, businesses need to look at their online profile to gain competitive advantage wherever they can, ensuring they have a website to reflect their business offering. THE ‘M’ FACTOR We talk to two Dublin-based mums about their experiences, and the pharmacy and alternative products that they can’t do without. Catherine, mum of DaimhÍn, three and Emmet, ONE, is a stay-at-home Mum What aspect of having a baby were you the least prepared (as in healthwise/illness wise) for? During both my pregnancies I had perfect blood pressure, however, after my second son was born I was diagnosed with low blood pressure following the birth. It soon returned to normal, but I didn’t think I’d have to monitor my blood pressure after the birth! What products would you recommend to expectant mums to start stocking up on now? 12

Babywipes, we never have too many in my house! Cotton wool, as many newborn babygrows as you can muster and sudocream! Did your children suffer from any unexpected illnesses? Did you find any particular conventional/alternative health remedy effective? My second son suffered with Bronchiolitis at nine-weeks-old and was hospitalised for four nights. We used an array of products: from calpol, saline drops and a bulb syringe to help him recover. Also, bringing him into a steamed-up bathroom helped clear the congestion.

Did you stick to any particular nutritional format during pregnancy? I just tried to keep a balanced diet, which was difficult on my first pregnancy, as I had strong cravings for cake! Did you find any particular formula good? My first son had difficulty gaining weight with breast feeding alone, so it was recommended that I give him ‘top-ups’ of formula. I used Aptamil formula and he was soon gaining the required amount of weight!

ChildCare IPR Nicole, a Journalist and Publisher, has two daughters Isla, six and Mena, four What aspect of having a baby were you the least prepared (as in healthwise/ illness wise) for? The way my house turned into a vomitorium! I was sick all day - every day, during both my pregnancies. No remedy worked. Obviously, you have to be careful when you are pregnant with medications, but I tried everything natural…ginger, seasickness bracelets, eating crackers every hour…nothing worked. With my second pregnancy, I continued to be sick for one month after my baby was born. I could never be a bulimic. I’d rather be very fat than get sick that much again! What would you recommend for expectant mums to start stocking up on now? I actually think that new mums buy too much in a panic. I don’t think you need even a third of what we all buy. You know it’s gone wrong when you see baby kneepads for sale for when they start crawling. We all need to calm down and be sensible. The only thing you need to have for a baby is a good travel system, like a carrier/ carseat/pram combo that converts into a stroller down the line. The rest of the stuff you can make do. I have a friend from Chile who used a padded drawer instead of a Moses basket. Most Chileans do that. And the Scandinavians use a cardboard box for the same thing. I bought eco-nappies, but had them delivered to my house for no extra cost. But I had to, because my brother is an environmental scientist and I heard terrible stories about what normal nappies do to the environment. But one thing I did love was waterwipes. They are a great product. They have no

weird chemical junk in them, and they aren’t expensive. And when you have a baby you need wipes all the time. Also, Sudocream is the one product that really does clear up nappy rash fast. Materrania Organic nappy rash cream is also a great organic alternative. But there are a lot of good organic products out there that do the same thing. Did your children suffer from any unexpected illnesses? Did you find any particular conventional/alternative health remedy effective? One of mine had terrible eczema that kept her awake scratching at night. It took me ages to work out what was causing it, because every child seems to have a different trigger. For mine, it was washing powder. I tried many different types, including mild and eco-types. But in the end I now wash

all her clothes and sheets in just hot water. And the eczema went away overnight. But in the meantime, I used Dr Organic Virgin Coconut Oil to calm the itch. Did you stick to any particular nutritional format during pregnancy? I ate whatever would stay down. At one stage, I was eating organic babyfood, because the texture was so smooth that it would help my stomach! Did you find any particular formula good? I never once used formula. I don’t even know how to make up a bottle! But I had the luxury of working from home and stacking my work around my babies, so I was in a position of advantage when it came to breastfeeding. Pregnancy - and the workplace Pregnant employees and their employers have certain mutual responsibilities. Peninsula Business Services looks at the important issues.

I

f an employee tells you that she is pregnant, you have certain additional health and safety responsibilities towards her. Pregnancy is a part of normal everyday life, not an illness. Many women work during pregnancy and return to work while they are breastfeeding. In the workplace, there may be hazards which affect the health of the woman, or the developing child and the Pregnant Employees Regulations of 2007 has been enacted to provide specific protection. Employee’s Responsibilities An employee must inform their employer that they are pregnant, and provide the appropriate medical certificate stating their condition. She may choose to inform her employer through her supervisor, or by having a doctor directly contact the employer. As the earliest stages of pregnancy are the most critical for the developing child, it is in the employee’s interest to let her employer know she is pregnant as soon as possible. Employer’s Responsibilities Pregnancy often goes undetected for the first 4-6 weeks, therefore generic risk assessments covering the work activities carried out by women of child bearing age should be undertaken by the company. Health and safety legislation requires that specific risk assessments are carried out for new and expectant mothers. Where a risk to a pregnant employee or the foetus is identified, every action possible should be taken to remove the

risk. In the event that the risk cannot be removed, then the employee’s working conditions or hours should be altered, or the employee relocated to a job that is free from such risks. In the event that neither course of action is possible, then the employee should be granted health and safety leave.

Pregnancy often goes undetected for the first 4-6 weeks, therefore generic risk assessments covering the work activities carried out by women of child bearing age should be undertaken

Control Measures Once notified of a pregnancy, specific risk assessment relating to the pregnant worker’s work tasks should be carried out. These should be discussed with her, and any alterations necessary to her work schedule agreed. The risk assessment should be reviewed on a regular basis during the pregnancy. Working conditions may be altered in numerous ways, for example by: providing the opportunity to alternate between sitting and standing positions, or provide rest breaks; supplying lifting equipment to reduce manual handling; restricting or re-allocating duties so that heavy objects are not lifted by new or expectant mothers; introducing control measures such as physical containment, hygiene practices and vaccination to protect against biological hazards; excluding new and expectant mothers from the workplace or relocating them so that they are not exposed to infectious biological agents or harmful substances; and Reviewing working hours or shift patterns to reduce risk. While a pregnant employee is a common and natural occurrence, many businesses do not have any policies or procedures in place to deal with any issues which may occur. If you need advice on how to carry out the assessment or any other factors contact Peninsula Business Services on 1890 252 923 and quote Irish Pharmacy Retailer magazine. Irish Pharmacy Retailer

P

harmacists, Dieticians and pharmacy staff each play important roles, but their efficacy increases when they work together. Being part of a team means filling a valuable role. The best teams have people who complement each other and push the group’s performance beyond that of the individual. In a pharmacy setting, this concept is especially important. A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular disease, and members of Molloys team are committed to help all the community to eat a heart healthy diet. Healthy eating and an active lifestyle are proven methods to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. Dieticians work in a variety of clinical and community settings leading nutrition interventions to reduce cardiovascular disease. Coronary Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death in Ireland. One of the risk factors is high cholesterol, as it causes fatty deposits to build up in the arteries making it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body. Cholesterol is a fatty substance required for many vital body processes. As well as being a structural component of all cell membranes, it is used by the body to produce some hormones, and it is a precursor to bile acids, which are vital for fat digestion. As a Dietician, I will assess the patient's diet and implement cholesterol lowering advice where appropriate. Reducing cholesterol levels by 1% can lower the risk of heart disease by 2%. Also, by just eating healthy it is possible to reduce cholesterol levels by 10%! The main focus for a cholesterol lowering diet is reducing the total amount of fat you eat, as well as the saturated and trans-saturated fat. Replacing saturated fats (e.g. fatty and processed meats, full-fat dairy products, cakes, biscuits, etc.) with a small amount of polyunsaturated

fats (e.g. vegetable oils) and monounsaturated fats (e.g. rapeseed oil, nuts etc.) will lower LDL and increase HDL cholesterol.

Diet plays an important role in maintaining a healthy heart, but there are many other factors that are linked with heart health. Other factors include smoking, being overweight, and high blood pressure. It is also recommended to increase omega-3 in your diet. Oily fish (e.g. salmon, trout, mackerel, herring and sardines) is the richest form of omega-3 and can help to reduce cholesterol. Fibre has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol, by decreasing the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the intestine. It is also recommended to increase fruit and vegetables to at least 5-a-day and have a handful of unsalted, uncoated nuts per day, e.g. walnuts, pecans, almonds, brazil nuts, etc. Plant sterol and stanol esters are

also regularly promoted as cholesterol lowering products. They compete with cholesterol in the gut and inhibit the absorption of cholesterol. They are effective in lowering cholesterol levels. Another factor to consider in relation to coronary heart disease is high blood pressure. High blood pressure has been linked with high salt intake. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid adding salt to foods, and reduce the consumption of foods which contain a lot of salt, e.g. bread, packet soups, processed meats and cheese. A high salt intake translates to >1.5g per 100g. Also, customers and clients can get their blood pressure checked (free of charge) at Molloy's Lifestyle Pharmacies & Health Stores. Diet plays an important role in maintaining a healthy heart, but there are many other factors that are linked with heart health. Important factors include smoking, being overweight, and high blood pressure. As a Dietician, I recommend small manageable changes to stay physically active, weight loss (if required) and a cardio-protective diet. We believe that everybody should invest in their health, but appreciate that it can be expensive therefore cholesterol testing is available at a very reasonable cost at Molloy's Lifestyle Pharmacies & Health Stores. The cholesterol test identifies the patients’ total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride level. Caroline Brosnihsn runs a successful weight loss programme named Steps4Success. She also has a facebook page which she regularly updates with healthy eating tips: www.facebook. com/Steps4Success00. Caroline is also available to do group talks to workplaces/clinics/health professionals/ teams e.g. sports teams, etc. Caroline can be contacted by logging onto www. molloyspharmacy.com and clicking on ‘ask the dietician’.

5Loyalty

Steps to

Retail Expert John Hogan looks at how create success with customer loyalty.

M

any Pharmacies have introduced Loyalty Schemes and others are wondering whether this would be a beneficial initiative for them. Often, these are introduced as a defensive measure because a competitor has one. Experience has shown that there is an initial burst of activity once introduced, followed by a steady decline in interest from both the customers and the retailer. Why is this? Most loyalty schemes are what are called: ‘one to many’, they are good 40

Irish Pharmacy Retailer

at tracking the loyalty points built up, making bulk offers and for generic promotions. Research has shown that these do not engage customers and they eventually stop using them and are left with a niggling feeling that they are missing out. You don’t want your customers feeling uncomfortable. It really does not need to be this way, with the right approach and technology, customers can become really engaged with you and it can produce a steady flow of new custom, which gives you a big competitive advantage.

John Hogan

John Hogan is a founder of Real World Retail, a new software service for retailers. To arrange a business consultation to help your business, you can contact John on (01) 4270349, or email him: john. hogan@realworldretail.com

Business Of Retail IPR Plan Unless the extra business is more than the cost of the system, it probably makes no sense to go down this route. Your costs will be the cost from the Loyalty Card supplier, your marketing collateral and your redeemed points cost. These will be big enough. Where is the payback going to come from? You will need to get a higher transaction value for the same number of transactions, or more transactions from more frequent customers’ visits and perhaps attract new customers. In my opinion, this will work only if you have a strong mix of fragrance/cosmetics/gifts - or you have a significant number of front of shop customers. Both of these areas have significant profit potential to be tapped, areas such as OTC much less. Don’t start until you have a proper trackable written plan of where your payback will come from.

Launch Although this is time consuming, it's probably the part that you will enjoy the most. Shop staff are motivated by this, and generally, there is very good initial success in building up a good database. It is critical that customer details are collected at the time of handing the card to the customer; do not assume that they will register online. Ensure both email addresses and phone numbers are recorded accurately.

Engage The reason most loyalty schemes do not succeed is that there is no proper engagement with customers. For example, I have a certain sandwich franchise loyalty card that I no longer use - because they just spam me with my points tally and non-relevant offers. These offers are for meat products even though my purchasing history would show I am a vegetarian. As customers, we do not want to be spammed with across the board offers; we want to be engaged with. Consider these: An offer of a Flu vaccine for those that bought cold & flu remedies from you last year. Information on your dispensary services to those that have not had any prescriptions filled with you in the last year. Offers to Mothers who have previously bought baby items.

Other Tactics If you have a competitor doing a special offer, you can match or beat that offer within 24 hours, but only to the people who it is relevant to, e.g. Clarins’ customers for a specific store only. This will be more successful than the competitor’s offer as your offer is more relevant and less annoying. Other general tactics will include birthdays, Pre-launches etc. Discuss loyalty with your suppliers too; they will often fund your offers in return for consumer and sales feedback.

Assess Not everything works, even the top retailers trial offers until they find the ones that work, then they roll them out to wider audience. You will need to assess what is successful. Are you getting the payback that you planned for? Keep the successful promotions and dream up new ones to try out next. This is a journey, but it is one that will add to your bottom line and give you real competitive advantage. At Realworld Retail, we provide analytics for loyalty systems to provide this one-to-one marketing ability. You can get Clubcard functionality in a way that is very easy to use for your own business.

Improves Patient Care

Easy to Change Medication mid-way through cycle

Personalised with Pharmacy Name, Address Details + Logo Free Training

System includes:Colour picture of drug Description of each drug & medical indications

Nu-Life Monitored Dosage System (MDS) from Virginia Medical Supplies is relatively new to the market. Pharmacists have found that it saves them time and money. It also makes it easier for patient compliance as it includes a FREE programme that produces a ‘Medicines Explanation and Instruction Sheet’. This shows a picture and description of the drug which is very user friendly for both pharmacist and patient. One of the core advantages is that if medication changes mid-cycle, the pod to be changed is simply popped, the medication changed as required and a new seal replaced on the pack. To view a video of how Nu-Life works go to www.virginiamedical.ie

What Pharmacists Say

Jane Fleming MPSI, Murphy’s Pharmacy, Midleton, Cork said: ‘‘We find the Nu-Life blister packs fantastic. It saves staff a huge amount of time as it makes dispensing much faster. Gone is the need to stick labels on charts and write in the drug description. This has all been taken away as the computer application that comes free with Nu-Life does it all. We just have to print out the instruction page. The patient details are on the computer and ready for the next month. We cannot believe how simple and fast the system is. Also if we have to make a change midcycle, it only takes 30 seconds to pop the pod, put in the new tablets and replace the seal. This is a huge time saver for us”.

Colin Deeny MPSI, Inish Pharmacy, Carndonagh, Co. Donegal said: ‘‘We find Nu-Life much easier to use and it leaves no room for error. It is really fast to fill the patient’s prescriptions with the larger pods and the colour print-out that shows the tablets and describes what they are for; this is also really useful for the patient or their carer. I would say that Nu-Life is 50% faster to use that the blister

packs we have used in the past. It is also much better from a patient care point of view, as previously some patients have missed tablets as they got stuck in the blister packs, but with Nu-Life the pods are transparent and really easy to open, so the patient can see the tablets and get them out easily”. Dervilla Mullaney of Riverstown Pharmacy, Riverstown, Sligo said: ‘‘We find the Nu-Life blister packs great both for us and for our patients. In the past we had problems with other blister packs where tablets floated from one pod to another which meant that the patient was not getting their medication as prescribed. Since we started to use Nu-Life our own staff love it as it is easy to fill and the beauty about it is that when there are changes to be made mid-cycle all you have to do is pop the pod and put the easy to use seal back on. Our patients, some of whom do not like change, also find it really easy to use as they love the sheet that describes what the medications are for and the fact that it has a picture of the tablets. We would highly recommend Nu-Life Blister Packs”.

IPR ALTERNATIVE ZONE

Winter Is Coming!

Thinking about winter remedy solutions for your customers? Lucy Earley looks at some alternatives...

Irish Pharmacy Retailer

T

hanks to recent campaigns about the ineffectiveness of antibiotics in combatting the common cold, the general public has realised that colds and flu's are best managed using paracetamol, Vitamin C, bed rest and plenty of fluids. But...what works from an alternative or OTC standpoint? Echinacea On a personal level, I use this every winter, and throughout the year when I feel a sniffle coming on, or that horrible virus-infused wonky feeling. Whether it’s placebo, or not, it works every time. In saying that, new research carried out by The Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University has found that echinacea does work. They carried out the largest clinical trial into the benefits and risks of taking echinacea over a four-month period. The study investigated how effective echinacea purpurea extract is at preventing colds and flu viruses. 755 people took part with some of these participants taking Echinacea, and others a placebo. The trial was carried out as a randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial that investigated the safety and

efficacy of echinacea. Those who took the treatment suffered 149 bouts of illness compared with 188 in the placebo group, a difference described by researchers as “borderline significant”. However, the total number of days spent with the flu or cold was reduced from 850 to 672, a “highly significant” change. The Echinacea herb proved most effective amongst people with a weakened immune system and those prone to recurrent infections by cutting the number of colds they suffered by more than half (59%). Professor Ronald Eccles, Director of the Common Cold Centre, said: “The newly reported results confirm that Echinacea supports immune resistance, and in parallel acts directly against a series of viruses." Chicken Soup With flat soft drinks and stew as the usual Irish mammy remedies - you might be better placed in advising your customer to make up some chicken soup, using free range chicken stock, garlic, vegetables and some noodles. Chicken soup, fondly referred to as ‘Jewish Penicillin’ has also been proven to help with colds and flu's. It acts as an antiinflammatory by inhibiting the movement of immune system cells that help the body’s defences. It can also speed up the loosening of mucus, helping to relieve congestion.

It’s also very palatable to the elderly and children, or those who have lost their appetite. Garlic The well-respected Cochrane Institute carried out several tests on Garlic to ascertain its efficacy in relation to healing colds and flu's. They studied 146 participants and identified that people who took garlic every day (instead of placebo) suffered less colds. However, more studies have to be carried out on a randomised controlled basis, to figure out whether taking Garlic at the start of a cold actually lessens the numbers of days the patient suffers. Salt Chest infections and asthmatic problems can be greatly reduced by using a salt therapy box such as Salin Plus Air Purifier. A family member suffers from COPD and has really found the Salin Plus a ‘God-send’, over the last few months. His mucus production is automatic in the morning now, whereas an inhaler would be needed before its use, to bring up phlegm, which is so important for COPD sufferers. Salt-water gargling and salt-water nasal sprays are also efficient in preventing viruses from taking hold in the delicate membranes of the nose and throat. Prevention may be better than cure, but colds and flu's will always try to find a way. Make sure that your older customers are aware of the flu jab season well in advance, by putting up awareness posters early on in autumn. IPR Get the Look

Debs Gals The makeupshop.ie is one of Ireland's leading online make-up stores. They are also experts in make-up artistry. The debs and Christmas party season are all about carefully applied make-up. They show us how to 'Get the Look!' Emma's Make-Up In this shoot, the Make-Up Artist, Annette, blended LASplash Cosmetics Eye Sparkle over Emma's eyes first, before completing the rest of the make-up. She used foundation from makeupshop.ie, but a cream foundation such as Elizabeth Arden’s Flawless Finish can be used. She made sure to cover the lips too, as she wanted to increase the natural size of the lips. 48

Irish Pharmacy Retailer

Next Annette set the foundation with a light dusting of translucent powder, taking care to set the powder over the lips also. She applied contour to the cheeks, using LASplash Mineral blush, a soft Rimmel pink blush could also be used. Then she applied mascara, brow pencil and lashes from the LA Splash range. Annette then lined just outside Emma’s lips with lipliner, and

carefully applied LASplash Lip Butter lipstick in a hot pink shade, taking time to fill in the new lip line. She applied a soft lip-gloss In Love to make the lips look even bigger. Get the Look IPR Rianne To create this debs look, we defined the crease of Rianne’s eyelid with Kett’s contour fluid in Shape, a dark skin colour tone to give the perfect eye contour. We applied Kett’s iridescent illuminator Topaz – a rich golden shimmer on the eye lid and Jasper – a deep rich bronze over the eye socket, we then highlighted under the brow bone with LASplash Cosmetics Eye Sparkle. Rianne can take lots of eyeliner, and LASplash Cosmetics dark brown really suited the sultry debs look we were going for. The rest of Rianne’s face was airbrushed in Olive 5, while her cheek bones and jaw bone were contoured with “Shadow”. Blush was applied to the apples of her cheeks and Zircon, a pale shimmer highlighter was airbrushed onto the cheeks as a subtle highlighter. Most debs will go for false lashes so we added a full set of strip lashes. We completed Rianne’s make-up with a light pink on the lips and pink shimmer lipgloss by LASplash. Cosmetic Camouflage If you stock camouflage for tattoos, take a look at how to achieve the cover-up pictured here. Cosmetic camouflage is not as daunting as you might first perceive, when you have the right products! The key is to have patience selecting the correct colour. Cinema Secrets and Kett Cosmetics Fixx Crème can be applied in exactly the same way. First take swatches of the crème fix or ultimate foundation and match it against your client's skin. (If your client has freckles take time to get a colour match for the freckles too as you will have to add them back in later). Once you select your colour, begin by working it onto clean skin. Lightly stipple the foundation over the tattoo or bruise. Using the matching translucent powder, push some powder into a powder puff and lightly roll-pat the powder onto the foundation. Dust off the excess and re-apply the next light layer of foundation. Patience is required initially, because it’s important to work in light layers rather than applying too much foundation at any one time. Repeat the process, build up the layers until the area is camouflaged. When adding freckles back in, use light stipple movements or 'dabs' with a stipple sponge to get the desired effect. Finish with another layer of translucent powder, and set with a setting spray. Cosmetic Camouflage by Oona Doherty for Makeup Shop.ie

Drytime Drytime offers parents and children a safe, alternative treatment to bedwetting. Drytime is a hop extract, originating from a plant called Humulus Lupulus, which helps children to control the urge to urinate or suffer leakage of urine, while sleeping. The aromas released by Drytime provide a relaxing stimulant to the central nervous system, which in turn improves overnight urine retention. Humulus Lupulus has no side effects or addictive qualities, so it’s a perfectly safe alternative to treat a child’s nocturnal enuresis.

Kelo-cote® Kelo-cote® is the only patented silicone gel clinically proven to smooth, flatten and soften scars both old and new. Itching and discomfort that can arise as a result of scarring is also reduced, as is redness and discolouration. Kelo-cote® is recommended by physicians all around the world. The gel self-dries to a transparent, breathable, flexible and waterproof layer that offers 24-hour effectiveness. It forms a bond with the outer layer of the skin, protecting the scar and allowing it to mature through normal collagen production. This improves the cosmetic appearance of the scar. Kelo-cote® can be used on any irregular skin/ scar surface, joints, flexures and across any scar size. Offering minimal restrictions to a user’s way of life, the skin can be freely covered with pressure garments, sun block or cosmetics. An observational study conducted by Sepehrmanesh, et al1, of 1,522 patients using Kelo-cote® to treat scars, demonstrated the effectiveness and tolerability of the product. Both physicians and patients were satisfied with Kelo-cote® and the therapeutic success achieved in terms of scar appearance and feel. Reference: 1. Sepehrmanesh M, et al. Nu-Life Monitored Dosage Nu-Life MDS saves Pharmacists time and labour costs, while at the same time improving patient care. Designed by an Irish Pharmacist, Brian O’Donoghue MPSI, for Irish Pharmacists - it is 100% Irish. Available in both 28 and 42 pod sizes, NuLife MDS is very practical and sturdy with large transparent compartments that make it fast and simple for the pharmacist to fill, and importantly, the patient can easily see the medication to be taken at the prescribed times. The Nu-Life Monitored Dosage System comes with FREE training and a FREE Computer Application, which enables pharmacists to print off a Medicines Explanation Sheet, which is personalised with the pharmacy name, logo and contact details. Ensures Compliance The free computer application also allows the Pharmacist to print out a ‘Medicines Management Page’ for each Patient, which is attached to the Nu-Life Pack. This page shows: the name of the medication, a colour picture and description of each medication, the time it is to be taken during the day and medical indications. As well as being user-friendly for the patient when taking the medication, the ‘Medicines Management Page’ also allows the Pharmacist to make a comprehensive final check of the

medications against the patient’s prescription when filling the Nu-Life MDS, ensuring compliance. Easy and Quick to Change Medications Mid-Cycle Unlike other blister packs, if the patient has to change their medication mid-cycle it is made very easy with Nu-Life. The Pharmacist simply pops the seal for the days the medicines have changed, takes out the unwanted medication, puts the new prescribed ones in, puts on a new seal and gives it to the patient. What Pharmacists Say about Nu-Life Jane Fleming MPSI, Murphy’s Pharmacy, Midleton, Cork said: “If we have to make a change mid-cycle, it only takes 30 seconds to pop the pod, put in the new tablets and replace the seal. This is a huge time saver for us.” Colin Deeny MPSI, Inish Pharmacy, Carndonagh, Co. Donegal said: “We find Nu-Life much easier to use and leaves no room for error.” Dervilla Mullaney of Riverstown Pharmacy, Riverstown, Sligo said: “Our staff love Nu-Life, as it is easy to fill, and the beauty about it is that when there are changes to be made mid-cycle all you have to do is pop the pod, change the tablets and put a new seal on – it’s fast and simple.” Please call us on 1890 90 47 37 or email info@virginiamedical.ie

Key Market Drivers: A recognition that, in the western world, Government expenditure (in terms of % of GDP) on domestic healthcare has reached unsustainable levels. Despite this, demand for improved healthcare continues to increase, leading governments directly or indirectly to limit new treatments. Levels of obesity, cardio vascular heart disease (CHD) and type I and II diabetes are predicted to increase massively in the next 5-10 years. Products aimed at early detection and costeffective management will remain at the forefront of healthcare spending through the next decade. As couples are delaying having families, often well into their 30’s, there has been a rapid increase in the problems associated with fertility/infertility which are not well funded under Government provision. Increasing levels of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and the need to contain further spread within at risk groups. Both of these factors will create a further shift and demand for PoCT products to ease the bottlenecks within the existing healthcare systems as well as transferring the associated costs.
