Hollywood Actor, Sean Bean, is the star of the new TV ad by Proctor & Gamble in partnership with The Make-A-Wish Foundation. In addition to Facebook, content will also be hosted on Fairy’s brand landing page on the P&G website Supersavvyme.com. The ad stars Bean playing an action hero, fulfilling the boyish fantasies of nine-year-old wannabe director, Harry Collet. Bean maintains his famous straight face and hard man persona, as he fights knights, escapes pirates on a miniature bike, tackles a T-Rex and even survives a pork pie explosion. Scenes direct from a child’s imagination and under the supervision of a strict and grinning Harry, who at one point even demands Bean to “give it some welly”.
NEW COPD RESOURCE A comprehensive educational resource has just been launched by Boehringer Ingelheim, aimed exclusively at Irish healthcare professionals (HCPs), caring for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). HCPs can register for free on www. COPDexchange.ie to gain access to a suite of peerreviewed materials designed to aid in the accurate diagnosis and effective management of one of Ireland’s leading causes of mortality. The learning content on COPDexchange.ie is recognised for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits. At least 440,000 people in Ireland have COPD, and it is estimated that half of those are undiagnosed. Ireland has the highest mortality rate in the EU from respiratory disease, with COPD a major contributor to these deaths. The earlier COPD is diagnosed, the more effective its management can be, ultimately resulting in fewer hospital admissions.

IPR NEWS INCREASE IN LEVY WILL ULTIMATELY INCREASE GOVERNMENT'S HEALTHCARE COSTS
A DOSE OF POSITIVITY! Lloyds Pharmacy recently conducted research among almost 1,000 people in Ireland on positive thinking. The research findings show that over a third of us (34%) live by the mantra ‘always look on the bright side of life’. And over three quarters (79%) say that having a positive attitude helps them enjoy life more. Half of the respondents believed that a positive outlook can improve your health and wellbeing. Designed to help customers to think positively about their health, each of the 74 Lloyds Pharmacy stores offer added-benefit services, including skin experts, skin mapping services accredited by the Skin Health Alliance, pain experts and blood pressure testing facilities.
THE BENEFITS OF THE FLU JAB The Flu Season lasts from October to April. Thirteen people, mostly elderly patients, died of influenza-associated illnesses in Ireland during last year’s flu season. Research has shown that the flu vaccine cuts the risk of death from influenza in half for elderly patients and reduced the chance of hospitalisation by more than a quarter. IPU research confirms that 28% of patients vaccinated in pharmacy last season had not been vaccinated before and that 81% of these patients were in an at-risk category. The number of patients vaccinated in community pharmacy last season has doubled from the previous season. 10

The Irish Pharmacy Union has warned that the significant increase in the prescription levy could result in patients not taking key medicines, which will lead to increased healthcare costs for Government. The latest increase, following on from a similar increase last year, ensures that the cost of the prescription levy has increased fivefold in the space of two years. According to Bernard Duggan, Chairman of the IPU’s CPC Committee, “There is evidence to suggest that the previous increase in the prescription levy has led to patients going without medicines that they need. This further increase will only exacerbate the situation and could result in patients having to be hospitalised, which will result in higher healthcare costs for Government.” The IPU is calling on the Minister for Health to exempt certain vulnerable groups from the prescription levy, including: Patients in residential care settings; Patients with intellectual disabilities; Patients receiving treatment under the Methadone Treatment Scheme in respect of other medication that they may require; Patients receiving psychiatric medicines; Homeless patients, including those in homeless shelters; and Palliative care patients.
STATIN PRICE DECREASE The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly TD, and the Minister for Primary Care, Alex White TD, have announced immediate reductions in prices for atorvastatin products. The price reductions are the result of the introduction of reference pricing under the Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Act 2013. An information and education campaign, aimed at both health professionals and the public, is continuing. Information leaflets are being delivered to all community pharmacies and GP surgeries and further information is available at www.hse.ie/generics.
NEWS IPR A GENETIC CAUSE OF OBESITY FOUND Researchers from the University of Cambridge have discovered a novel genetic cause of severe obesity which, although relatively rare, demonstrates for the first time that genes can reduce basal metabolic rate - how the body burns calories. Previous studies (performed by David Powell and colleagues at Lexicon Pharmaceuticals in Texas) demonstrated that when the gene KSR2 (Kinase Suppressor of Ras 2) was deleted in mice, the animals became severely obese. As a result of this research, Professor Sadaf Farooqi from the University of Cambridge’s Welcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science decided to explore whether KSR2 mutations might also lead to obesity in humans. Professor Farooqi said: “Up until now, the genes we have identified that control body weight have largely affected appetite. However, KSR2 is different in that it also plays a role in regulating how energy is used in the body. In the future, modulation of KSR2 may
represent a useful therapeutic strategy for obesity and type 2 diabetes.” Changes in diet and levels of physical activity underlie the recent increase in obesity in the UK and worldwide. However, there is a lot of variation in how much weight people gain. This variation between people is largely influenced by genetic factors, and many of the genes involved act in the brain. The discovery of a new obesity gene, KSR2, adds another level of complexity to the body’s mechanisms for regulating weight. This new finding may pave the way for medication which specifically targets these cases.

FACTOR We talk to two busy Dublin-based mums about their experiences and the pharmacy products they can’t do without. ROBERTA VON MEDING, MUM OF JULIET, THREE AND ROBYN, ONE IS EDITOR AND PUBLISHER OF IRELAND’S FAVOURITE MATERNITY AND PARENTING MAGAZINE, MUMS & TOTS. What aspect of having a baby were you the least prepared (as in health/illness wise) for? The lack of sleep! Eventually you do learn to cope with it though. I was surprised how little sleep I could actually still function on! The biggest scare for me with both pregnancies was preeclampsia. Fortunately, I only got it at 35 weeks, but it is still quite scary as your blood pressure goes through the roof. Robyn was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Ocular Cutaneous Albinism when she was ten weeks-old, which basically means she lacks pigment in her skin and hair. Her eyesight is poor and she is registered as legally blind with the NCBI. She does see, just not very well, but will learn visually in school. She is such a precious little girl and very determined - even at this early age. 12

Are there any essential products you recommend to expectant mums to start stocking up on now? If you are expecting your first, speak to your mum or someone you know who has children, as they will give you a list of the essentials. You can never have too many babygrows in the early days due to leakynappy-syndrome! Muslin cloths for spit up. Calpol, Teetha and Nurofen for teething.
Did your children suffer from any unexpected illness? If so, did you find any particular conventional/alternative healthy remedy effective? Neither of my girls have had any major illnesses thank God, other than
tonsillitis and bronchiolitis, the latter being quite common in newborns. Karvol is great for clearing stuffy noses, although I would only use one or two drops from a capsule.
Did you stick to a strict nutritional format during pregnancy? With Juliet, I was very sick for the first five months so I stuck with mostly beige foods! Definitely not the healthiest, but it was the only thing my body wouldn’t reject - so bread, pasta, crisps, chips, garlic bread, etc. With Robyn, I wasn’t as sick so was better diet-wise, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and the odd craving indulgence -
CHILDCARE IPR mums to start stocking up on now? It goes without saying that having medicine to tackle pain and temperature to hand when necessary is a must, but beyond that I would really recommend having some basic items for coughs and colds. Products like snuffle babe and karvol can help congestion and plug in vaporisers are extremely effective. Brolene is something that I always have on the ready. The one thing my kids haven’t had is conjunctivitis, and at the slightest sign of a weepy or sticky eye I give them brolene drops.
Did your children suffer from any unexpected illness? If so, did you find any particular healthy remedy effective? Apart from the aforementioned coughs and colds, Tom was nearly two when he was referred to an asthma consultant with the resulting diagnosis of mild, possibly allergyrelated asthma. We found that keeping his room clear of dust and washing bedclothes at high temperatures was effective. Ben & Jerry’s, Cadburys Caramel bars - clearly what the baby needed at the time!

In terms of looking after a baby and managing all the little bugs; I had no idea just how often they could get sick in the crèche environment - and just what that would mean in terms of not sleeping, trying to juggle work, etc. We had a real nightmare when I went back to work after my first baby, Tom got sick every single week for about eight months. Nearly always ‘something viral’, but that meant days of managing temperatures, coughs, vomiting, etc, and NO sleep.

Did you find any particular formula good? I breastfed both my daughters up to a year so didn’t really use formula except on the odd occasion when I was out for an evening.
Did you stick to any particular nutritional format during pregnancy? The food pyramid! Five portions of fruit and vegetables, measured protein, fat and carbs. It was simple and easy to work into my daily food intake, and a sound nutritional basis for breastfeeding also.
Did you find any particular formula good? I found no difference between the brands. I moved my son to formula at six months and my daughter at four months. She was so distracted with everything her older brother did, that breastfeeding her became impossible!

IPR FRONT COVER FEATURE
THE FINAL SPOT We talked to Adare Aesthetics about their belief in the power of Clearogen, a proven treatment for skin breakouts 22
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
FRONT COVER FEATURE IPR
S
kin breakouts, the curse of puberty and beyond. Cases of adult skin breakouts increase each year in Ireland due to mainly hormonal factors. It can strike out of nowhere, even if you were never afflicted with spots in childhood, and can occur up to the age of forty. Recently, Xposé presenter Lisa Cannon admitted to suffering from the onset of severe spot breakouts, which started suddenly and has shocked her with its debilitating consequences. How do spots start? Severe spots begin when the negative effects of DHT (Dihydro Testosterone) act on the oil glands. The Enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase converts Testosterone to DHT. DHT binds to Androgen Receptors on the oil glands resulting in excessive oil production. Excess oil obstructs the skin's pores producing whiteheads and blackheads. Bacteria feed on the trapped oil causing inflammation, infection and visible spots.
What is Clearogen, and how does it work? Clearogen is the first blemish treatment of its kind that uses scientifically proven natural ingredients to address the hormonal cause of breakouts and disrupt the first step in the formation of spots, reducing excessive oil production by the sebaceous glands. What is it composed of? Clearogen combines natural botanicals, anti-oxidants and FDA approved Salicylic Acid to open the pores, kill the bacteria, reduce inflammation and promote the healing process. Clearogen uses a patented delivery system for gradual release of sulphur-based ingredients throughout the day; maximising efficacy while minimising irritation.
So it’s perfect for a skin breakout that affects the sufferer out of nowhere? Clearogen provides a comprehensive treatment option for spot sufferers. Clearogen is effective against hormonal and menstrual spots, stress-induced breakouts, body spots and blemishes that have been non-responsive to other treatments. Topical spot treatments have essentially remained unchanged for the last 50 years, treating them by unclogging pores, killing bacteria and reducing inflammation.
The Three-Step Clearogen System The first step to healthier skin Clearogen Foaming Cleanser gently removes dirt, excess oil, make-up and the bacteria that cause spots. Botanical extracts revitalise the skin while preventing breakouts.
Are there clinicial studies to backup the product's claims? In clinical studies Clearogen had a 95% success rate. When used regularly, Clearogen clears existing spots, prevents new blemishes, and restores skin’s normal oil production for beautiful, vibrant skin. The results of Clearogen can be seen within 30 days. Clearogen is a dermatologist formulated spots treatment that goes beyond the visible symptoms of spots to address the root cause: the excessive production of oil due to stimulation of the sebaceous glands by the hormone DHT.
The final step towards healthy, clear skin Clearogen Acne Lotion clears existing spots and prevents future breakouts.
After you cleanse Clearogen Clarifying Toner eliminates pore clogging impurities allowing balanced oil production, while decreasing pore size, reducing redness, and irritation.

TESTIMONIALS “I am a 40-year-old female who has battled severe spots since I was 12 years old. I have tried everything on the market including Accutane. The ONLY product that has worked for me is Clearogen. I highly recommend it. I had no side affects and quick results. I recently ran out of Clearogen and tried some cheap over the counter treatments. I broke out immediately. I have recently enclosed my order for more Clearogen. This is the best blemish treatment ever! I have polycystic ovaries, which makes my spots even harder to treat. Clearogen always works for me, ” commented Wendy S. “Clearogen is the only line I have used that doesn’t dry out my skin or cause irritation. I saw a difference in oiliness of my face immediately and the spots started clearing up after 2 weeks. Clearogen is the best blemish treatment I have ever used!” Christopher T. Aged 21

IPR Workplace Wellbeing
Workplace Wellbeing In the run up to Christmas, when stress levels are high, Personal Development Expert Liz McKeon looks at workplace wellbeing.
S
taff well-being is an increasingly relevant and necessary consideration in the modern workplace. At its simplest level it's ultimately about personal happiness – feeling good and living healthily. This also means not allowing work to undermine our basic purposes and needs in our lives, and in this respect well-being is a hugely significant aspect of our work and our careers. Well-being and stress management issues are within the overall ‘duty of care’ that a pharmacy owner owes to its employees. If staff wellbeing is undermined any of the following negative impacts can arise: Reduced productivity Increased mistakes and errors Conflict, grievance and disciplinary issues Sickness and absenteeism Low morale and negative atmosphere Poor customer service Resignations causing increased staff turnover Poor employer reputation among staff and customers. Simply put, when wellbeing is eroded people can get sick both mentally and physically. Workplace stress has been defined as “the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demands on them at work”. The cost to an individual can be high – quality of life, relationships, self-esteem and health can be compromised. Causes

of stress in the workplace are varied and include: high workload, coping with change, conflict, bullying, ineffective management, long working hours, lack of training, threat of redundancy and unclear job specification. 6 Steps to Developing Wellbeing Policies within your pharmacy environment: Create a positive work culture Have a clear vision and purpose where staff know they are valued, enabling them to be engaged with the success of the pharmacy. Encourage teamwork through relevant training, rewards and recognition. Training and Development Training and Development add value to both pharmacy and the individuals. This can be reflected through increased sales and improved customer service. Training tends to counteract negative stressful pressures as it exposes staff to new and interesting learning and development, which is positive and motivational. Pay & Conditions Pay and working conditions should reflect the responsibilities of the role. Be careful of long hours and overtime as this can lead to increased stress and staff fostering resentment towards management. Job Security Job Security and the feeling that the job itself may be at risk is a significant source of stress and tends to impact
way beyond the job performance. Always behave with visibility, honesty and transparency. People like to know where they stand. Communication Good communications encourage a positive retail culture, which helps to promote wellbeing. Aim for excellent communications between all levels of management and staff. Foster a culture of trust and co-operation, which will result in less conflict and more efficient working. Work/ Life Balance Finally, create a store culture which respects and encourages a healthy Work/ Life Balance. For example, offering time in lieu or overtime payments for additional work allows staff to be suitably rewarded for their efforts, which improves self-esteem and a feeling of personal value and encourages job commitment and job loyalty!

New Monitored Dosage System tick’s all the boxes
Almost two years ago a new monitored dosage system came on the market. It was designed by an Irish Pharmacist for Irish Pharmacists. Understanding the increasing pressures that pharmacies are under in relation to competition and increased costs, Brian O’Donoghue MPSI, Virginia Medical Supplies Ltd., developed the Nu-Life Monitored Dosage System (MDS). Uniquely it comes with a FREE computer application and FREE installation on the pharmacist’s computer systems. Brian, managing a pharmacy himself is fully aware that pharmacists do not have the time or manpower to input patient details when changing to a new blister pack / MDS system. With Nu-Life all this work will be done at no extra cost to the pharmacy. Nu-Life is already in hundreds of Pharmacists and a large number of nursing homes are also using the system as it tick’s all the boxes in relation to requirements for pharmacists and nursing homes to be compliant. Brian O’Donoghue said, “From my own experience and from talking to patients, other pharmacists and healthcare professionals I recognised a need for an improved, cost effective blister pack / MDS system, so I designed one. The reaction from Pharmacists and Nursing Home Managers and patients has been overwhelming in their praise of the system. I am also delighted to hear that the School of Pharmacy is using the Nu-Life MDS as the standardisation of teaching the use of MDS/Blister Pack systems. Reducing their costs is a major factor for Pharmacists in making a change to our system as it offers the free computer application. However, equally important is the quality of the product and the ease of use for patient and pharmacist alike. We provide a free installation service and back-up so Pharmacists don’t have to worry or waste time installing our MDS system”.
Nursing Homes - MAR Sheets
Pharmacy Computers & FREE Computer Application Saves Pharmacists Time and Money You can also view a video of how Nu-Life Monitored Dosage System works on www.virginiamedical.ie
What Pharmacists Say Derek Fehily MPSI said “We have been using the Nu-Life Monitored Dosage System / Blister Packs for some time now and find the system great and very easy to use. It takes less time to fill and if we need to change the medicines mid-cycle it is a really simple, fast process. We find the FREE computer application a huge advantage as it enables us to put information on the cover sheet that helps our patients. They love the fact that they can see a colour picture of the tablets, an explanation of what they are for and when they are to be taken. This also helps our own staff when filling and checking the medicines. Another advantage is that we can advertise our pharmacy name, logo and website on the cover of the Nu-Life MDS. I would have no hesitation in recommending this blister pack/monitored dosage system to other pharmacists.”

Already a large number of Nursing Homes are using the Nu-Life MDS. The benefit for them is that it makes life easier for them in relation to record keeping and completion of MAR sheets as the free computer application can be tailored made to meet their individual Nursing Home requirements. ut SHEET A4:Layo hilys BLISTER

Cormac Concannon MPSI, Merlin Pharmacy Galway said “We have recently changed to the Nu-Life Monitored Dosage System. The decision was easy as it is a superior product that is equal or less the cost of other MDS systems on the market. The FREE computer application is easy to use and meets all requirements. Both our patients and staff find it excellent. Another important selling point for us was that the installation was very streamlined and is FREE. Jason from Virginia Medical Supplies came to the pharmacy and installed it on our computers and did not leave until it was all set up and running. We are delighted we changed to the NuLife MDS system’’.

Layouts Your high margin products and those that you bought in bulk need to have the most prominent displays. Show Price Points clearly for easier decision making. Locate your pick-up items near the till area for impulsive buys. Ensure that both the look and atmosphere generates a festive feeling. IPR HR
Employers Beware: The Christmas Party Penisula Business Services looks at the pitfalls of the Christmas party - what should be a festive time of the year, but can sometimes be a nightmare.
M
any employers arrange for a Christmas Party as the ideal way to recognise staff contribution and effort, to allow staff to blow off some steam and also to help staff to get to know their colleagues and managers. However, when alcohol is involved it is also possible that inappropriate behaviour will occur such as insulting conduct, unwanted sexual advances, etc. There have been several cases in recent years which have found that an employer can be liable for such employee actions at work related social events. We identify the type of issues that may arise and what pre-emptive action can be taken.
42
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
Discrimination by employees The most common risk for employers is discrimination, as employees may engage in some discriminatory act towards another employee. In Maguire –v- N.E. Health Board (DEC-E 2002/039) the Equality Tribunal awarded an employee €5,000 after he was verbally abused at a Christmas Party for being a Member of the Travelling Community. Similarly, in Ms Z –v- A Hotel (DEC-E2007-014) the Tribunal awarded €12,000 to an employee after she was sexually harassed by her General Manager at a
Christmas party. Key concerns of the Tribunal in these cases were that (a) the employers did not investigate the employees’ respective complaints, and (b) the employers did not have a policy as to how employees were to conduct themselves at the social events. In both cases, the Tribunal found that the employer was liable for discrimination, even though it occurred outside of work at a workrelated event, as the employees would not have been discriminated against had they not been working for their respective employers.
HR IPR to an external venue for a Christmas party, particularly a public social venue, places those employees in a scenario where they may face inappropriate behaviour from third party persons, such as sexual harassment or racial discrimination.
Discrimination by third parties Employers should also be wary of Ms A –v- A Contract Cleaning Company (DEC-E2004-068) where the Equality Tribunal held that an employer was liable for €21,000 for the discrimination carried out by a third party. The employee had been sexually harassed at her place of work by the third party who did not work for the employer, but the nature of the work brought the employee into regular contact with this individual. Therefore, it was her work that led to this discriminatory behaviour. Again, a crucial issue was that the employer did not investigate the employee’s complaints. This should be noted because bringing employees
Social Networking and the Dreaded Christmas Photos The growth of social networking sites seems to be never-ending and with users now able to instantly upload photos through smart phones the growth of social networking can prove troublesome to employers during and after the Christmas Party. An unwitting employee may publish photos from the party on their network and the consequences may be to (a) bring negative publicity upon a company as its employees are seen to be out under the influence of alcohol, and/or (b) lead to tensions where an employee has published an embarrassing or negative photo of a colleague. As such, it is advisable that employers have a detailed policy in their employee handbook on email and internet usage and that such a policy extends to work related events. In addition, employers are advised to notify their employees to respect the right to privacy of their colleagues when attending such events. Taking Pre-emptive Action Notwithstanding the above, an employer does not have the automatic entitlement to take disciplinary action following an incident that occurs at a work related event. An employee may have a reasonable expectation that what they do outside of working hours is not subject to company disciplinary rules. As such, employers should take pre-emptive action. Firstly, ensure that all employees have received a copy of their contract
of employment and employee handbook and that these documents contain clear policies on bullying, harassment, email and internet use and disciplinary procedures. Secondly, issue a memo to all staff in advance of the event and explain that as the event is work related, it will be subject to Company rules and procedures. Highlight your disciplinary rules and procedures to employees in advance, ensuring that they are aware that they may be subject to disciplinary action for unacceptable behaviour. It is advisable to remind staff to drink alcohol responsibly and in moderation. A recommended step is to arrange transportation for employees to and from the event to reduce the likelihood of drink-driving and help ensure that employees get home safely. Is the venue suitable? Employers should ensure that the venue is safe from a health and safety perspective, bearing in mind its suitability for any disabled employee. As it is a work related event the career discussions and salary increase requests are bound to arise. Managers are advised to avoid such discussions at all costs. Appoint a designated person to take photos at the work related event. Coach managers on how to respond to any unwanted conduct that may occur at the event. If any inappropriate behaviour occurs, take swift investigative action upon the resumption of work, especially where an employee has made a complaint, drawing reference to the pre-emptive memo. Employers should seek advice from Peninsula Business Services if they wish to put safeguarding action into place in advance of the Christmas Party. Please phone our experts for advice on 1890 252 923

were not true to label. “Authentic Manuka Honey is very special and recognised around the world for its unique properties – particularly in immune support, digestive health, wound care and skincare. But as the independent testing by Fera (the Food and Environment Research Agency) has shown, there are imposters!” Dr. Scholthauer commented. “To identify
genuine Manuka Honey that has been produced by bees from the nectar of the New Zealand Manuka Bush (Leptospermum Scoparium), Irish consumers should look for the UMF® mark on pack,” he added. It seems that some Irish consumers may have been paying a premium price for a product, which could have simply been a bottle or jar of brown honey labelled ‘Active’ and passing it off as Manuka honey. Calling it ‘Active’ does not inform the consumer about the type of honey or its respective benefits and definitely does not mean it is UMF®. “To identify genuine Manuka Honey that has been produced by bees from the nectar of the New Zealand Manuka Bush (Leptospermum Scoparium), Irish consumers should look for the UMF® mark on pack,” he added. "The UMF standard is based on the phytochemicals specific to Manuka honey that gives its unique properties. If it doesn’t comply with this UMF standard, it is not Manuka honey. Irish Pharmacists and counter staff should be aware of the differences to best inform their customers,” he added. Irish Pharmacy Retailer

The crease of the eye is 'smoked out' using LASplash Cosmetics Smokey eye-shadow duo. Step 2: Starlight glitter mixed with the eye shadow base was used to make the eyelids pop. Step 3: Black liquid liner was applied to the upper and lower lids. LA Splash's Tamed was used on Ciara’s brows to keep them in shape. Always apply a primer to the lids. With your ring finger smooth out any lines, as the crease of the eyelid is an oily area. Then wash neutral powder/neutral eyeshadow over the eyelid from lash to brow. Test the area for oil and apply more powder if needed. The lighter background shade is applied just above the crease of the eye and blended. Using a soft kohl of any colour desired, draw a thin line above the lash line and blend with a q-tip or shadow brush. Apply the dark shadow over it and blend. Always apply a thin layer of liquid eyeliner over and use mascara or lashes. For added dramatic effect, line and use shadow on the lower lid.

Ensure physical security equipment such as CCTV and Alarms are in full working order, and staff are fully trained.
Ensure that you have an intruder alarm duress code, which is used in the case of an incident at the time of opening/closing the pharmacy and that staff members are aware of when and how to use this code. Review your keyholder details with your monitoring station and keyholder protection company; ensure keyholder details are kept secure and not visible to the public. Ensure all premises keys are accounted for and controlled. IPR HOW WE SELL
How We Sell
Irish Pharmacy Retailer recently interviewed husband and wife pharmacists Valerie Normoyle and Séadn Hillery who own two County Clare based pharmacies. You are marking celebratory milestones this year. When did the pharmacies open? Normoyles Pharmacy in Ennis was founded in 1963 by Limerick native, Noreen Roche Normoyle and Séadn Hillery followed in his father’s pharmacy footsteps when he founded RX+ Pharmacy in Shannon in 1992. So we’re celebrating 50 and 21 years in business respectively! What is the company’s ethos? Our ethos is based on a commitment to both our clients and continuous professional development. In effect, we have the synergy of two 56
Irish Pharmacy Retailer
businesses including an economy of scale. Between both pharmacies we employ fifteen people including five pharmacists, one qualified assistant, three technicians, three trainee technicians and a pre-registration pharmacy student. It is also a teaching practice with a focus on innovation, professional development and keeping up-to-date. It is important for us to stengthen our relationships with all of our customers, to provide accurate professional information and make that information accessible, continue to develop contact with local healthcare providers and explore new ways to
serve our communities; focusing on wellness and illness prevention. How have you weathered the recession? At this time of recession and increasing challenges in community pharmacy both of us believe that the customer must come first. Providing optimal care for the health and wellbeing of our customers is an absolute priority for us in both practices. It is part of the tradition we have inherited from our pharmacist parents and neither of us have known anything other than a full commitment to the community we serve.
HOW WE SELL IPR
In addition to prescriptions and OTC, what other services do you provide to the community? In addition to over-the-counter facilities, both practices offer enhanced clinical services, such as flu vaccines and a professionally managed weight reduction programme. We also offer free services including blood pressure checks, cholesterol testing, blister packaging, asthma inhaler technique demonstrations and travel advice. What marketing do you do throughout the year? This year, both pharmacies honed in on rebranding, developing a suite of shared marketing materials and creating a high quality and accessible website, which will be launched in the coming weeks. We also embarked on a local radio and print advertising and media campaign. Do you have a set merchandising/point of sale structure? In addition to the community pharmacy services, both businesses offer a wide range of beauty and general healthcare products. In the case of RX+ Pharmacy in
Shannon it also offers photographic services. These provide a more attractive mix of products that appeal to the customer and provide a one-stop-shop for personal and bodycare needs across the entire age spectrum. Beauty advice and applications are offered by experienced staff and product promotions are also included in the overall marketing plan. Do you give back to the Community? We do. In recognition of what we
have received from our practices, we decided to establish a â‚Ź5,000 bursary for a Clare student beginning their science studies this year at a University in Ireland or the UK. Mullagh native, Niamh Sexton, won this year. We were truly amazed by the quality of applications and by the level of science knowledge that these young students have achieved. We feel we have a worthy ambassador in Niamh and we know she will be an inspiration for more students to engage in the sciences. PERFECT PITCH IPR DOES THEFT AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT! The number of incidents of retail crime and customer theft in Ireland is rising. With customer theft continuing to be the most prevalent, so what should you be doing about this? Ronan McCullagh, industry expert on retail security gives an insight into the current issues facing retailers and some tips on what we can do to mitigate this risk. Ronan has five key generic actions that all retailers should be taking, namely; 1) Team training A well trained team is your greatest asset against shop lifting. A company policy and training on shoplifting will ensure your team are well equipped when faced with the difficult situation of confronting a shoplifter or alerting security. Highlighting certain characteristics to look out for and having defined approaches and responses will give confidence to an employee as well as make sure true customers will not end up offended. 2) Awareness Shoplifters have certain characteristics and behavioural traits, so always be aware and look out for the following: Avoiding eye contact Erratic shopping behaviour An appearance of being rushed Leaving the store and returning repeatedly Watching the staff movements - possibly looking for opportunities An alert employee will spot these, maybe the person is “known”, these are triggers for your “Plan of action” 3) Plan of Action If an employee’s suspicions have been raised, then having a “plan of action” in place as part of your company policy will allow
for a coordinated response. The goal is always to deter the potential thief and welcome the paying customer. This should start by alerting the manager who in turn will instruct the staff to move onto the shop floor under the guise of greeting customers and offering assistance. Courtesy and attention are good for business and bad for shoplifters. 4) Product Placement Ensuring that high risk products are placed in the eye-line of your team to help protect the product, while avoiding high shelves in front of the till area ensures good visibility, a deterrent in itself. Avoid placing high risk products near the exit and note that narrow, cluttered aisles make a thief’s job easier. 5) Advertise against shoplifting Post warning signs stating a rigorous shoplifting policy and a hardline approach to would be shoplifters. Place these in hard to watch areas and where you have high risk. Be clear and concise in your message and it will send an unambiguous signal to any potential thieves to take their trade elsewhere. Implementing all of these tips is just part of protecting yourself against shoplifting, a consultation and review of your premises conducted by a security expert is recommended to ensure the highest possible deterrents and security steps are taken to minimise loss to your business from this type of crime. Gemini Retail Security have agreed to carry out a FREE security evaluation for readers of Irish Pharmacy Retailer which can be arranged by using the contact details below. IPR PERFECT PITCH EUROSALES INTERNATIONAL LIMITED - 20 YRS CORPORATE HISTORY In 1993, a leading cosmetics company, Revlon International, decided to cease direct distribution in Ireland. Their financial controller, Sean Conlon and sales director, John Meany O’Brien commiserated with each other. Although they had worked closely together for a period of 15 years, neither knew that the other was a “serial” entrepreneur. Both had separately and without the knowledge of the other, run a number of successful businesses. In the depths of a recession and with a lot of determination they decided to pool their resources, mortgage their homes, and with a small seedling capital from a bank, form a new company which they named Eurosales International. Over the next few years they built up the number and range of products they distributed, gradually increasing their staff numbers and building a full service offering including representation, marketing, sales, order picking, distribution, delivery and merchandising. In 2005 Eurosales International moved to a new modern facility in Ballymount Business Park with a warehouse capacity of 20,000 Sq feet and employing 15 staff at the outset. In the intervening years, the business has trebled, distributing to over 1,500 accounts and employing 55 staff. New Product Ranges Eurosales International are delighted to announce that they are the new distributors of P20 sunscreen and are putting into action detailed and dedicated marketing and PR plans for this and other key major lines they already distribute. Eurosales are in countdown to the re-launch of their updated website. Alongside this is a brand evolution of the Eurosales Logo which goes live on September 1. This brand face-lift will launch the next 20 years. In tandem they explain that they must be able to talk to their customers in this new digital age. Both are extremely conscious that youthful consumers – many as young as 12 years old buying cosmetics,

are tuned into social media and that the traditional means of communication are no longer relevant to this segment. They are determined not to be found wanting in this regard and have invested in FaceBook pages for imPRESS nails and Softsole, with advanced plans on other key brands. Likewise, they have revamped their house style and made it more vibrant and modern. The last line belongs to Sean.
