SWEET SQUARED

BEAUTY BRAND RITUALS OPENING FIRST IRISH STORE Rituals, which is one of Europe’s fastest growing beauty brands, is opening its first Irish store directly opposite Victoria’s Secret on Dublin’s Grafton St. The Dutch company, which was launched in Amsterdam in 2000, now has more than 500 stores in 27 countries spread across Europe, the US, Australia and the Middle East. According to reports, it has agreed an annual rent of €450,000 for the former H Samuel Jewellers store, which has a ground floor area of 110 sq metres. Rituals is the first brand in the world to combine home and body cosmetics. Its wide product line includes body care, skin care, precious mineral make-up, pure tea, scented candles, fragrance sticks and soulwear. Each product, over 550 in total, is inspired by an ancient Eastern tradition. Rituals is also expected to open new outlets at shopping centres in Dundrum and Blanchardstown in Dublin.

ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH NIMUE SKIN TECHNOLOGY Award-winning distribution company Sweet Squared faces a fresh venture into the skincare category as it celebrates new Ireland partnership with South African-born skincare hero Nimue Skin Technology. Having known and loved the brand for over a decade, S2 founders Samuel and Samantha Sweet have signed a brand agreement for sole Irish market distribution of Nimue with immediate effect. This follows on from the distribution agreement that Sweet Squared secured for the UK in September 2017 and the success the brand is already seeing in the market. Originally developed for the medical market in 1994, the professional-only derma-cosmeceutical brand has earned a reputation worldwide for innovation and delivering visible results that delight therapists and clients alike. “We are proud to have been serving the Irish professional for nearly six years now and we are thrilled to add this truly amazing and results driven brand to our portfolio,” said Jenny Rochford, regional manager, Sweet Squared Ireland. “We are very excited to further develop and grow the brand in Ireland and we know that the partnership between S2 and Nimue will deliver huge growth and success for both existing and new stockists to the brand.”

SMES NEED TO BRUSH UP ON DIGITAL SKILLS – SURVEY The latest SME Digital Health Index found that while the number of small and medium-sized businesses in Ireland with no digital presence has dropped to its lowest level, more work needs to be done. The survey of 1,000 SMEs by IE Domain Registry revealed that despite the record numbers online, just one in three SMEs are able to take sales order through their websites, while just one in four have payment processing facilities. While the majority of SMEs have websites, most use them as a ‘digital business card’, with limited information. Lack of time and lack of technical skills were highlighted as the two main barriers for small businesses doing more online.

16

www.salonmagazine.ie

“We’ve gone far beyond the need to raise awareness of the benefits of an online presence,” said David Curtin, CEO of IE Domain Registry. “Now we need to focus on developing programmes that upskill time-poor small businesses and help them to quickly implement digital sales tools and e-commerce features.” The report also found that the popularity of Facebook for companies is declining. Just over half of SMEs have a page on the site, but this is down 2pc on the previous year. Meanwhile, SME’s use of Twitter has gone up 2pc to 21pc.

IRISH HAIRDRESSERS

PROTEST AT DÁIL OVER BUDGET VAT HIKE Hairdressers from all over the county gathered at the Dáil recently to protest at the VAT hike in Budget 2019. VAT for the hospitality sector jumped from 9pc to 13.5pc. Hundreds took part in the demonstration as they claimed could put many of them out of business. Those involved in the trade are angry they are being thrown in with multinational hotels and big restaurants, which are booming. Hairdressers believe the increase is too much for the industry to bear and maintain it will drive customers to use black market operators who can offer cheaper prices. According to Irish Hairdressers Federation president and House of Colour hair group founder David Campbell the increase could add anything from €2 to €10 to the price of a visit to a salon.

“We’re here to stop the 13.5pc VAT rate,” he told RTÉ. “It’s a 4.5pc increase and the businesses can’t sustain it. We are only feeling the grassroots now of the economy coming back. The hotels and the restaurants are all booming, we’re not and we are struggling to keep our salons going and this won’t help. This will drive the industry into the black market. Our major problem is we’re trying to compete with the black market that’s rampant at the moment in the hairdressing industry. This price increase will ultimately be passed on to consumers and is going to drive them towards the black market as well, which will jeopardise jobs in the industry.”

WINTER SKINCARE

FROM SUNAURA

Winter conditions put the skin under different environmental stresses than in summer, and a different skincare routine is needed to combat these stresses. Mila d’Opiz Swiss Classics Climate Cream is a rich moisturiser containing snow algae powder, which is specifically designed to protect skin from extreme cold conditions or from the change between outdoor and indoor temperatures that skin undergoes several times per day in winter. Mila d’Opiz Vitamin C Concentrate is a concentrated serum with a high concentration of vitamin C to protect and regenerate the skin, and to provide moisture and vitality. Mila d’Opiz Skin Vital Vitamin Capillary Balm 50ml is a vitamin-packed serum which strengthens the skin blood vessels to reduce redness and rosacea. In-salon, winter is a great opportunity for glycolic acid

treatments, which are not recommended during sunny weather. Glycolic treatments can stimulate dry and mature skin into producing healthier, more oxygenated and rejuvenated skin cells. Oily and blemished skin can benefit greatly from glycolic treatments to reduce acne and/ or blemishes. Mila d’Opiz Glycolic Acid Treatments are gently buffered to produce an immediately visible effect whilst minimising irritation and redness for more sensitive skin. Mila d’Opiz Luxury Caviar Facial provides a deeply moisturising and anti-ageing effect which are the perfect antidote to winter’s stresses. www.sunaura.ie

THE WORTH OF NETWORKING

I had the pleasure of meeting the spa manager, Ela Urbanowicz at Parknasilla at the recent Spa Life Conference that took place in the Johnstown House Hotel. Sothys was one of only two platinum sponsors for this event and we received phenomenal feedback. Ela and I connected immediately and have since formed a great friendship.

run by Les Nouvelles Esthétiques Spa, during which it received the 2018 H.Pierantoni prize for innovation.

Parknasilla is a magical place, it oozes quality, luxury and you feel the stresses of life lift as soon as you enter their gates. The accommodation is so comfortable with some breathtaking views of the sea. Ela was looking for something different, something exclusive and absolutely professional. What caught her eye was the new Sothys Athletics line, an innovative, unisex, sporty and modern brand for wellness centres and spas.

Parknasilla now offer its clients a selection of treatments and complementary homecare from the Athletics line. They have also added the Seasonal Face and/or Body Treatment with Vanilla and Passion Fruit to its menu! This is a treatment of sheer indulgence with a delicious floral fruity fragrance. In autumn, our skin is weaker, in winter it slows down. It can appear dull and tired and our defence system needs a boost to be able to face the aggressions of the cold season. This treatment gives the skin a much needed dose of oxygen and minerals to boost the skin’s defence system before winter. With complementary homecare, this treatment is ideal for everyone.

“What first got my attention with the Sothys brand was their new Athletics treatments. I was looking to add to our spa offering, especially nowadays with the increasing number of active and wellness orientated guests,” she said. “Our spa philosophy is ‘Nature Inspired Wellness’ and I believe that Sothys fulfils it. Nature is at the heart of Sothys with its philosophy and product development. After only a few days of training, all my team fell in love with the treatments and quality of products and we can't wait to share that love with our guests.”

Parknasilla now also offer their clients Make-up by Sothys, an elegant and glamorous make-up range, a must-have for every woman. Because the complexion forms a background for every make-up style, foundation has always been important to Sothys. Sothys have an extensive selection of shades to perfectly suit every skin tone and can offer a satin, matt or natural finish from medium to high coverage. A completely personalised approach! With every season, Sothys will offer colour and trend products to complement your basics.

This line is perfectly in tune with the ‘athleisure beauty’ trend and has been designed for those looking for complete well-being and who have chosen exercise as the way to achieve that, but it is also ideal for consumers looking to slim down their figure. Its mixed target audience is a huge advantage for the brand and should be a stepping stone to gaining new market share.

Sothys is a brand with strong added value. With an international presence, the best of science and nature, 70 years’ experience in highly effective skincare formulations, active ingredients using the latest technologies, and beautiful elegant packaging. Sothys is one of the original brands exclusive to beauty salons and spas that can create an outstanding experience for the senses.

The Sothys Athletics line was recognised during the 48th Congres International d’Esthétique & Spa in Paris, which is

THE POWER OF THE GIFT VOUCHER

SPA IRELAND

This time of year we focus a great deal of energy and value on the gift voucher business in our salons and spas, writes spa consultant Diahann Buckley.

G

ift vouchers are a wonderful opportunity to grow your business far beyond the initial voucher sale. When giving sales training I focus on the power of conversion that comes from this audience. The key is to fully understand your clients, first of all, finding value in this client and not limiting the opportunity to the voucher itself. As a business owner, you must recognise that 20pc of your client base generally make up 80pc of your revenue. The first flaw I see as a consultant when mentoring spa and salon owners is they tend to pigeonhole their clients into the usual service and spend area they have historically received. I ask you to look at voucher as a means of direct marketing and educating your existing clients to the full services menu you have to offer. If a client retrieves a voucher, the opportunity should be used fully with an in-depth consultation to ensure the user has a full understanding of your service options. A common mistake made is the owner doesn’t allow a flexibility in service transfer. Using a voucher for the client is a perfect opportunity for them to try additional or new service options within your menu. Always allocate value and do not restrict the voucher to the actual service it may be made out for. You would be surprised how many of your

30

www.salonmagazine.ie

clients do not look at your menu or are unaware of the options open to them.

“Using a voucher for the client is a perfect opportunity for them to try additional or new service options within your menu”

base line from service to retail. Do not take for granted this is happening as in my experience secret shopping businesses, therapists tend to completely retreat with voucher clients. Use your team meetings to bring all the team on board and ask them to stand back and not rank the client based on past services/retail spend or frequency of visits. Its a new year and your clients are having full treatment requirements somewhere, use this time to re-educate and update the delivery of exceptional service to all your customers

Getting your team on board is essential. Have a team meeting before Christmas to ensure all members are aware of the value per service behind the voucher, particularly where packages are concerned. Furthermore the importance of client communication and effective consultation I can not reiterate enough. Consultation forms and engagement are vital to identifying your clients’ needs and gives the therapist the knowledge to deliver effective treatments and recommendations. Finally, make sure your team sees the opportunity to give aftercare, homecare and retail advice to every voucher recipient. A healthy business should convert 30pc retail sales as a

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED Salon and Spa Ireland Magazine’s Linda is taking a 12 week challenge with Nimue. Here we follow her journey to flawless skin.

Originally developed for the medical market in 1994, South African-born skincare hero Nimue Skin Technology is a professional-only derma-cosmeceutical brand that has earned a reputation worldwide for innovation and delivering visible results that delight therapists and clients alike. Award-winning distribution company Sweet Squared is now the sole Irish market distributor of Nimue.

Week 1

So what exactly is the 12-Week Challenge’? For starters, it is much more pampering than it sounds! Comprising seven at-home products and four luxury treatments (worth over €700) to improve the skin from the inside out, the objective is to feel confident enough with skin appearance to go foundation-free at the end of twelve weeks.

Week 3

The challenge demonstrates how Nimue’s highly effective and scientifically formulated products help women achieve the skin results they desire, so they feel confident enough not to have to wear foundation every day. Flawless skin with this renewed complexion is all the make-up they need! The brand has already seen some incredible ‘12 Week Challenge’ results globally, with many a bride across the world attending her wedding foundation-free due to a glowing, healthy and even complexion.

TAKING THE FIRST STEP

Week 5

The first step in the 12 Week Challenge is the skin analysis. This is done by a professional in order to ascertain skin classification and discuss skin concerns, so a regimen to suit individual needs can be tailor-made. As Niume says, “flawless skin doesn’t happen by accident, it happens by appointment”. This will determine whether the skin is Environmentally Damaged, Hyperpigmented, Problematic or Interactive. There are products in the Nimue range to tackle each concern. Linda’s skin is Environmentally Damaged, which means she has premature ageing or photo ageing resulting from a history of cumulative exposure to environmental factors. After the analysis she received her home kit, which includes seven retail products based on her skin analysis and a guide on how to use each of the products. In order to get the best results, the retail products are combined with four professional treatments during the duration of the ‘12 Week Challenge’.

Week 6

Linda is now six weeks into the experience. A busy working working mother of five, her skincare regime up to now was very basic. She’s now taking the time to use the products correctly and has completed two of her treatments. She’s also making a few required lifestyle tweaks! She has been learning all about the science behind the products and Nimue’s concept of treating, rather than masking any skin concerns. This is because the ‘12 Week Challenge’ is a transformative process for the skin at a deeper level, with advanced and concentrated formulas working to restore skin health and visibly improve all problem areas.

In our next issue you can read all about Linda’s completed ‘12 Week Challenge’. By then she will have done her final treatment and be able to see visible results, which she can explain in detail. Interested in becoming a Nimue stockist? Contact Sweet Squared at www.sweetsquared.com

GLOW COUUTURE The Glow Couture Powder in ‘golden veil’ makes complexion radiate with a soft golden glow. This fragrance and paraben-free highlighter blends well and feels comfortable on the skin. The tin, complete with shimmering sequins, makes the Glow Couture Powder an eye-catcher. The colour of the sequins changes between green, blue and purple in the light. The backs of the sequins are finished in matte black. Skin compatibility dermatologically approved. www.artdeco.com

BROWTASTIC BrowTastic Henna Brows offer the perfect alternative to eyebrow tinting, without the use of ammonia or lead, to develop to the eyebrow colour. Normal tinting only colours the hair, but henna colours both the hair and the skin to give you the look of a highly defined brow, but with the added effect you would get from semipermanent tattooing. The results last on average two to three weeks on the skin and up to six weeks on the actual hair. Henna gives you the opportunity to create expressive eyebrows and camouflage gaps in over-tweezed or sparse brows.

MIND MATTERS

The need to deal with mental health in the workplace is becoming increasingly prominent. So what should employers do to manage it? The following guidelines should help you manage the mental health issues of your employees, should they arise, and better equip you to know what to do. Encourage conversations about mental health - starting a conversation with an employee about mental health doesn’t have to be difficult. Encouraging an open culture where employees feel like they can talk to each other and/or managers will undoubtedly help alleviate stress in the workplace. DEAL WITH THE MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

WHAT ABOUT DISCIPLINARY PROCEEDINGS?

It is important for employers to deal with a medical certificate stating mental ill-health appropriately, by contacting the employee to find out if work is a contributing factor in triggering it and if there are any steps that can be taken to alleviate or eliminate the cause as soon as possible. Appropriate contact should be maintained with an employee on sick leave during the entirety of their absence. An employer should discuss with the employees what measures it may be able to take to help an employee return to work at the earliest opportunity.

A common problem for employers is that of the employee who, upon being told to attend a disciplinary hearing, goes off sick citing stress as the cause. Contrary to popular belief, the default position is not to postpone. In most cases, medical advice will suggest that dealing with the disciplinary issue will be more beneficial to the employee.

DON’T LET MATTERS DRIFT DURING LONG-TERM SICK LEAVE Employers should deal with issues head on when absence presents unacceptable levels of disruption to the business, rather than allowing the situation to drift to the point where the employee has been off for so long that dismissal looks like the only viable option.

example allowing them to start later or finish earlier, reducing their working days or providing them with remote access software and permission to work at home on set days. TRAIN YOUR STAFF Training line managers and senior staff to recognise mental ill-health symptoms will help them to manage staff with varying degrees of mental health issues.

MANAGE POOR PERFORMANCE Where performance becomes an issue, discuss it with the employee promptly and explain that they are not performing to acceptable standards. If disciplinary action is necessary, ensure fair and appropriate procedures are followed with reference to any relevant internal policies and the WRC Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures. CONSIDER REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS You may consider making reasonable adjustments to help an employee stay in work or return to work while they are experiencing mental ill-health. Flexible working is a potential option, for

EXPERIENCE DRIVEN MARKETING

THE FUTURE OF SUCCESS!

It’s time to move away from mass marketing, explains Joe McGlinchey from The Sunbed Association (TSA) . It’s probably fair to say that tanning/ beauty salons the world over generally follow a service-based business model that can be hit or miss and, unfortunately for many, tends to be more miss than hit. The model is straightforward – offer a beauty/tanning service with some high-tech equipment and accessories; pop in some attractive furniture and branding and finish off with some smiling staff to welcome in the clients. The problem is how many ways can you package and serve up these same services again and again and still find a way to differentiate your business in order to attract more customers. The answer is the EXPERIENCE. It’s time to move away from mass marketing to a more customised delivery of products and services where an engaging experience is staged for each customer. The buzz phrase for this is experiential marketing. Household brands up and down the high street have already embraced this

40

www.salonmagazine.ie

form of marketing: Top Shop, Uniqlo, Nike and Samsung being examples of brands what regularly offer in-shop and pop-up experiences that create a closer bond between the customer and their brand by immersing them in a memorable experience. The customer then associates that positive experience with the brand, encouraging them to spend more time, repeat visits and of course more money. Delegates at TSA’s recent SHINE event heard an inspiring presentation on how to transform their mindset and business plan to evolve into this new economy – the experience economy – hearing about examples of where it’s already taking place and gaining some great tips on what the new model would look like in their salons. Sounds interesting – it was! TSA members will soon be able to download a video of the presentation from the Members Zone on TSA’s website.

For more information about responsible use of sunbeds and benefits of membership of The Sunbed Association visit www. sunbedassociation.org.uk or call 016 363 139 or email info@sunbedassociation.org.uk. To contact Joe McGlinchey directly call 0044 7553 383455.

MORALE OF THE STORY If staff morale in your salon is low, how do you go about boosting it? Beauty business expert Liz McKeon gives her tips. Poor morale undermines the commitment of employees, hurts the products and service they offer, and can alienate the clients. It can arise for many reasons, such as a personality clash, poor management, lack of job satisfaction, financial insecurity, lack of job security or the absence of leadership – all of which may result in a high stress environment and this is the last thing you want your clients to experience. Poor morale can be encompassing, after a while, and it is difficult to know how to find its source, and thus how to reverse it. What may start just as individual apathy can deteriorate into a generalised infectious problem that spreads throughout the entire salon. The good news is, poor morale is reversible. However, you must remember to determine and deal with the cause, not the symptoms. If your salon is suffering from poor morale and you are unsure why, start by asking your therapists. Assess the

feelings and opinions of your team. Try to understand the resources people need to make both their work and work environment more satisfying. It is important to identify people’s expectations, their ways and benefits, how the internal communication system is working and whether your management style is effective. It might also be worthwhile to explore areas such as reward and recognition, and find tangible ways to contribute to the process of change. Managers can do so much to improve morale, by getting to know the team reporting to you, making yourself available when therapists need to talk or share a problem, valuing staff for their particular skills, passions and knowledge, and most importantly, helping your team members to develop their potential and supporting them in their ambitions.

Beauty business expert Liz McKeon specialises in business development in the beauty, hair and spa industry. For information about online courses, workshops and one-toone business mentoring, check out www.lizmckeon.com or call 00353 1 892 8007.

Your staff are the salon’s most valuable resource. By creating an environment of open, constructive feedback, staff will feel inclined to co-operate with you as you drive your spa forward.

Gifts

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING Whether it’s vouchers or wrapping, the key word this season is ‘gift’ if you want to maximise sales at this time of year.

M

ost hair and beauty businesses are booked solid around Christmas and New Year so your marketing focus at this time of year should be around increasing retail sales, increasing the average spend per client visit and getting clients booked in for the quieter January and February months. Remember that many people leave their Christmas shopping until the last minute so quite a few of your customers may be looking for gift ideas and festive inspiration. Tempt them into buying by creating glitzy in-salon displays to showcase products and treatment packages. And don’t forget to post photos on your social media pages.

Fifteen years ago Sam McLernon added gift wrapping on rolls to its product portfolio and under the stewardship of Norton the gift wrap and packaging line continues to grow and offers a wide range of products, which today consists of wrapping paper, sheets and rolls, tissue, bows and accessories, as well as supplies, such as tapes, dispensers, ribbon holders, paper dispensers/cutters, cellophane rolls and cellophane bags.

THAT’S A WRAP

“When you hand over a present, part of the gift is the pleasure of unwrapping it,” says Annette Norton, commercial director at Sam McLernon Dublin Ltd. “Wrap your gifts and create suspense, excitement and a look so beautiful that the person receiving the gift doesn’t even want to open it!”

“The quality and design of the gift wrapping paper definitely adds to the client’s experience,” Norton continues. “And to top it off add a beautiful bow or accessory from McLernons. For a quick and easy option cellophane bags with a cardboard base are quick and easy to do. To ‘drop, bow and go’ drop your product into the cellophane bag, attach your pull string bow and your customer is ready to go with a beautiful present.” Norton believes that salons should offer a gift packaging service all year round, for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day and, of course, Christmas. “Offering an in-store gift wrap and packaging service is a small service detail that makes a big impact,” she adds. “This helps you distinguish yourself from competitors and be best remembered. Your customers feel valued and are happy to come back to you time and time again.”

It’s always a good idea to place a basket of inexpensive stocking fillers on your reception desk to attract last-minute purchases. And label the basket ‘Ideal Stocking Fillers’! Make sure your window display is both festive while also communicating what your salon has to offer. Windows are free, highly visible advertising.

Offering a gift wrapping service is an absolute must. It’s an opportunity to create a lasting impression in the minds of your clients. It’s likely to boost your retail sales and you’ll turn a satisfied customer into a happy one. Promote the service so increase awareness of it. Most people will be thrilled that they won’t have to wrap at home.

convenient way to present a nice hair or beauty product and various other gifts and adds the personal touch.

According to the company, its gift wrapping range turns a routine sale into a theatrical event. The presentation of a gift bag enhances a gift and is a

And finally, don’t forget to have plenty of gift cards in stock and advertise them as much as possible to your clients. They are a brilliant marketing tool for the hair and beauty business and make a perfect present. They are an opportunity to give your loyal client base a good gift idea for their loved ones, while bringing in new customers over the year ahead. And over half of gift card holders spend more than the value of the card.

FUTURE-PROOFING

YOUR SKILLS

Upskilling and continuing professional development are here to stay, according to the Aesthetic Training Academy Ireland (ATAI).

W

e know, it is somewhat annoying that the treatments you have been providing for years you now need to re-qualify in. First, it was laser and IPL you needed a level 4 in, now microneedling, skin peels, RF and even ultherapy (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is added to the list, with more coming. Overall this is good for the industry and good for the general public. We are still witnessing far too regularly court cases of people injured with these treatments. Sorry to say, it is the result of poor education in the sector. Upskilling and continuing professional development (CPD) may be relatively new to the beauty sector, but they are here to stay. Qualifications on the horizon will be valid for three years, after that you will need to submit a log book of treatment evidence to maintain the qualifications and also prove continual CPD. This is nothing new for the medical sector, including nurses, and that is also another reason you need to be on top of your education. At ATAI we train 10 nurses to every one therapist. Nurses are entering the aesthetic beauty sector at a profound rate. So,

it is not just a matter of you needing to check off insurance requirements, you have to fight your corner. As you are reading this magazine no doubt you are already a beauty therapist, however we do have new courses that allow school leavers or those new to the industry to enter the trade at level 4 or even level 5. The direction the industry is headed is very much elevated with an evidence base. For existing therapists, we have our skin rejuvenation course, this grants you a level 4 in skin Peels, microneedling, IPL for skin rejuvenation and also topical skin therapy with cosmeceutical agents while providing a pathway into level 5 and 6. At ATAI we do not even offer level 2 or 3 courses as we view them as redundant in the aesthetic beauty space. Tomorrow's aesthetic therapists will all be level 4 or above qualified. So, while we understand your frustration of needing to upskill for treatments you most likely have been delivering for some time, look on it as future-proofing your skill set while also leading you into new levels and treatments that before now were not available to the therapist.
