INDUSTRY VOICES
H20 Hair Niall Bennett of H20 Creative Hair, New Ross, Wexford, is a Joico Educator and winner of the ‘Best Men’s Image 2016’ in the Irish Hairdressers’ Best of the Best Irish Photographic Award. He is also the winner of the Irish Mens’ ‘Visionary Award’ and represented Ireland at the International Visionary Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, London
Why hairdressing? I was born into a hairdressing environment; my father has been in the business for almost 50 years. I always loved the buzz and excitement of the salon and the effect that having hair done to a very high standard has on people has always amazed me so I think I was always destined for the industry. I did try Civil Engineering in college but all it did was reaffirm that hairdressing was the career for me; I began my career in January 1997 and have loved every day since.
What drives you? Hairdressing is an art and it’s something I am passionate about. For me the principles of hairdressing are just doorways to creative expression and that helps with my designs for hairdressing competitions. I love knowing, when my clients walk out my door, that I have helped them feel glamorous, and maybe even better about themselves; it’s one of the things that motivates me. I also strive to improve both myself and students on my courses through education; it’s important that the hairdressing industry in Ireland maintains the high standards we have set ourselves.
Where did you train? I trained initially in FAS, in Waterford, and from there went to work for Maeve O’Healy-Harte, in Athlone. Maeve opened my eyes and mind to a whole new world of hairdressing including the importance of education and the benefit of competitions. I then moved back to New Ross to work in my father’s salon for a short period before moving to Dublin to gain more experience working in a top salon. I returned from Dublin to open H2O Creative Hair 16 years ago this year. Our industry is
always evolving and as a result you have to constantly upgrade and enhance your skills. I’m always looking to learn new techniques and trying to improve myself.
What are the best attributes in a good hairdresser? Having a good personality and the ability to empathise with clients is vital. You also need to have a strong work ethic and be very disciplined in your approach. A desire to improve is also important because your most recent achievement is just a step up to help you see your next goal; as the saying goes ‘what was good enough to get you here may not be good enough to get you there!’
What’s next for you guys? We are already working on the collection for the 2017 ‘Best of The Best’ Photographic awards and Visionary Awards as well as other competition looks and there is an extensive education training plan in place for all our team for the coming six months. In addition to presenting courses for JOICO this year I’ll also be overseeing the launch of our new website and app. All going well we may also have a little surprise? You will have to watch this space!!

2017 Spring/Summer db Master Colourist Jenny Dawson talks about the trends for 2017 Hair contouring will play a big role in 2017. This is an extension of the much loved Balyage technique, adding light to accentuate your face shape. Playing up eyes, cheeks and jaw line as you would with the popular ‘contouring’ make-up trend of recent years. As always for Spring / Summer Blondes will always go blonder and the pastel trends aren’t going anywhere, but we will focus on rose gold and coral peach shades as opposed to the icier violets and pinks of last season. To get the best results from your hair colour clients must be willing to invest in its upkeep, ensuring they use the right treatments, shampoo and conditioners. L’Oreal recently launched spring / summer, blondes a unique system that protects and strengthens the hair during technical hair colouring services. The systems consists of three components, the first two being used in salon and the third one at home.Hair is left feeling reinforced, more resistant, softer and shinier! For styling there is a resurgence of grunge styling - think hair with texture, undone, the messier the better is the trick. You will want to achieve a relaxed ‘’bed hair’’ look instead of overly styled hair.
db COURSES FOR 2017 ‘The Art of Colour’ – Advanced Course suitable for fully qualified Stylists/Colourists Keep up to date on the ever changing and evolving world of colour. Creative Cutting Creative cutting will focus on the transformation of a classic look into something ultra-modern and spring / summer, blondes while still keeping it salon and customer friendly. Upgrade your course to: Creative Cutting and Colour Enjoy live demonstrations in cutting and complementing colour techniques as you learn how to tailor your technique and colour formulations to create a bespoke look suited to your client and their needs. hile social media is becoming more essential to a business every day, it’s also becoming critical to stand out from the crowd. Like barbering, social media is constantly changing – there are always new techniques, platforms and products to try out. It’s good to keep an eye on things like LinkedIn and Social Media Examiner to keep ahead of this curve. Barbering is such a visual craft that we’re lucky things like Instagram and Facebook exist because it’s the perfect platform to share new ideas, new styles, different techniques and different products you’ve been trying out. It’s as simple as opening your camera and snapping a picture. If you look at Industry greats like Shorem Barbier, their social profiles boast thousands of posts of new hairstyles, products they use and the personalities behind their staff. They’ve amassed a huge following online because of it. It’s these little insights into their business that give their content value and help build a community around their business. At Abner Browns, we’re all about culture – the culture of fashion, men’s grooming but also we’re known for our music. Facebook and Twitter were essential in us launching our live music nights in the Barbershop in Rathmines. Through use of Video and Imagery – we’ve documented and shared countless packed nights in the shop with a great response. Using things like Facebook Live and Instagram Live or Stories is a great way to showcase your personality, vibe or atmosphere in your business – whether you’re throwing a gig or not. Gigs were our way of getting involved in our community and sharing it on social media was our way of tapping in and try to connect with that community online. It definitely made us stand out and gave us that edge on other barbershops. If you want to be an industry leader, it’s important to think like one. Support and engage with the community around you. Engage online with local activity, festivals or businesses, share their content, engage in their conversations and you’ll find they’re more than likely willing to do the same for you. SPA REVIEW SPONSORED BY EMINENCE ORGANIC SKIN CARE
Castle Wonders Our Spa Spy travels to The Castle Leslie Estate to revel in the wonders of Fire and Ice
M
y first time visiting The Castle Leslie Estate was for my cousin’s wedding, which was a stunning affair. Although we stayed outside the gates of the castle, I loved every minute of the event; from the incredible meal we enjoyed to the beautiful old-worldly drawing rooms where we sat drinking champagne, and feeling very grand indeed. It’s one of the few great Irish estates that’s still owned and run by its founding family. Nestled in 1,000 acres of Irish countryside that still seems almost feudal, with ancient woodland and pretty lakes dotted around, you feel like you’re going back in time to a different age. I had the good fortune of returning there, this time as a guest of The Victorian Treatment Rooms, the castle’s unique spa. The Victorian Treatment Rooms feature seven treatment rooms, a relaxation area and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the stables. Upon entering the exquisite reception area I was greeted by the very friendly face of my therapist. I opted for the ‘Fire and Ice House Facial’ by Eminence Organics Skin Care. It started with deep exfoliation with a warming spicy kick of paprika, sage and the horsetail plant. The tingling hot sensation is cooled with an application of chilled rosehip menthol masque followed by a lightly whipped moisturiser. Eminence is a high quality brand which counts many celebrity fans such as Alicia Keys (who credits her no-makeup look to it), Madonna and Jessica Biel - and I can see why. As well as each product that was presented to me smelling so incredible, my therapist, a major Eminence enthusiast told me that the brand addresses premature ageing, wrinkling, sun damage, acne and loss of vitality. My vitality, on the other hand, felt restored. I did at one point feel rather heated on the cheeks, but the chilled rosehip masque brought everything down to an even keel. I think that’s the point of the rather Game of Thrones sounding ‘Fire and Ice’ facial, it increases circulation, plumps the skin and refines it to smooth out fine facial lines. I felt very fresh-faced, and the crease lines in my forehead seemed to
www.salonmagazine.ie
be non-existent. My make-up looked flawless that night, which restored my faith in skincare being the holy grail of beauty. The Victorian Treatment Rooms feel bright, airy and luxurious. It has what all five star spas have, an almost uncanny sense of time slowing down; as if you’re just stopping to fully relax before getting back to your crazy life. The relaxation room is like an extension of the castle’s beautiful drawing rooms, a cocoon of luxury. The Castle Leslie Estate’s charm lies in its intimate atmosphere and elegance. It’s no surprise that it was voted by Trip Advisor as one of the Top 25 hotels in Ireland for romance. Being a haven of tranquillity, you won’t find televisions, radios or minibars within the bedrooms, so it has that break from tech that we all need sometimes. That evening we dined in the 2AA Rosette awardwinning Snaffles Restaurant, which is located in The Lodge. It was an excellent meal accompanied by a perfect wine choice. The Castle Leslie Estate is well worth a 2017 visit. Booking: +353 (0) 47 88100 or email reservations@castleleslie. com. Greystones Gal We chatted to Mariyana Mitchell, Manager at The Guinot Mary Cohr Salon, Church Road, Greystones, Co Wicklow Where did you train? I trained at the Professional Beauty College in Russe, Bulgaria, in 1996. The training in Bulgaria is quite different from Ireland. I did two years in college specialising in skin care and facials, after that I did an extra year to add waxing, nails and body treatments. I worked in my own salon from 1996 to 2001, I then came to Ireland and worked in the Powerscourt Spring Health Spa for 7 years. I have been working with Guinot for the last 8 years, I can definitely say that Guinot is the best brand I have worked with in my 20 year beauty career.
Any difference between working in Ireland and Bulgaria? The beauty industry in Bulgaria has always been very big and is popular with both men and women. In Ireland, getting a beauty treatment is considered a luxury but in Bulgaria it is seen as a necessity to maintain a healthy appearance. It is a normal thing to see men going for a facials, manicures, pedicures and even waxing. Bulgaria is full of mineral hot springs, which are known for their health benefits, we have a lot of health spas which offer and specialise in massage and treatments using hot mineral water. I think that the warm climate has a lot to do with people in Bulgaria getting salon treatments. When it is hot you wear less clothing, showing more of your body. Because of this body treatments are very popular with men and women.
What’s your favourite part of the job? I love the feeling I get when my clients get the results they hoped for. There’s nothing better than seeing that they really trust my knowledge and experience and that they leave happy and satisfied - and that they want to return to me again and again!
addressing skin concerns. In Guinot we call our therapists Beauty Doctors, as they begin every treatment with an in-depth consultation, and are prescribed the most suitable products for each client.
Do you upskill from time to time? When you are in this industry you are always upskilling. The industry moves so fast and Guinot is always innovating. New training and upskilling is an essential part of being a good beauty therapist.
What are you plans for 2017?
What do you think clients really want from the salon?
Our plans are to keep up the good work! We are determined to embrace all new opportunities and changes that come our way. The New Year is going to be very exciting for us with new launches of both products and treatments, so watch this space.
Clients are looking for the very best treatments and solutions tailored to their individual skin problems. Making the decision to come in to the salon is the very first step in

TANNING
Bedbugs Joe McGlinchey begs the question: how clean are your beds?
W
hether you do it standing up or lying down it’s important that your bed is clean. There are many micro-organisms which occur in nature that thrive in warm and humid places. A sunbed and its surroundings can provide an ideal breeding ground for them. So it’s essential that you have protocols in place to ensure your sunbeds are kept clean. Sunbed surfaces, especially the acrylic sheet on a laydown and foot base on a stand-up should be cleaned and disinfected after each use and at the end of each day. This will also help protect the acrylic from deterioration through perspiration build-up. Whether staff clean or you provide the cleaning materials for customers to clean the sunbed before/after each use, they should also be cleaned at the beginning or end of each day. Remember the underside of the acrylic sheet needs cleaning periodically. Normal household disinfectants must not be used as these can sensitise the skin and damage the acrylic. Only use products specifically formulated for sunbeds. And don’t forget other parts of the sunbed for example the optical filters, dust filters, fans and so on. Accumulating dust and dirt will not only affect the appearance of the sunbed but also the performance. For more information about responsible use of sunbeds and benefits of membership of The Sunbed Association visit www.sunbedassociation.org.uk or call 016 363 139 or email info@sunbedassociation.org.uk To contact Joe McGlinchey directly call 0044 7553 383455.
Great Play Ken Boylan talks about his love of make-up and his makeover of Pamela Flood
T
here are many reasons why I love being a make-up artist and owning my own business around make-up, I have a fab shop within a shop in Zeba on South William Street, Dublin and also in MiMis beauty rooms in Sandymount, which are opening really soon. I get to do lots of photo shoots for magazines and advertisements. You have to be good at what you do but also have a great interest in other people. The most important and rewarding thing I have done in the last 5 years was setting up my own make-up line Makeup\Play with my Husband Fabio. Every year I do a new shoot for the make-up line and this year’s model is my really good friend Pam Flood. The hair is by Stephen Kelly using L’Oreal products and Kenny Whittle took the
beautiful photos. I wanted the shots to be current - so I used my new eye shadows in cranberry eye shadow called ‘Tina Sparkles’ and gold eye shadow called ‘Sandra D’. On the lips I used my lovely deep berry shade called ‘Trump Card’. Over that I used ‘Verona Lipgloss’. I LOVE using Pam as my model because she has typical pale Irish skin and that’s very interesting. It’s so important to make sure the foundation matches the skin perfectly, especially when it comes to a photo shoot. We started the day at ten and finished at about 4.30pm! It took me about oneand-a-half hours to do her make-up and then Stephen did her hair also for about an hour. It’s then up to Kenny to get the shot that you see before you. It’s a long day, but I am happy to say I love what I do when I see the final pic!

BUSINESS OF BEAUTY
Consulting No Surgery There really are antidotes to surgical treatments, says Jennifer Rock
J
udging by the increase in clinics and medi-spas in Ireland right now, it’s undeniable that there is an aesthetic industry revolution happening in Ireland right now. Clients are becoming more informed, and are demanding results – some achievable, but some not so achievable! A bugbear of mine is seeing so many people succumb to the peer pressure and fall victim to the marketing machine that is the beauty industry. Lots of claims are made without seemingly any need to be supported or challenged. For instance, a single cleanser won’t remove acne, and an eye cream won’t remove a wrinkle. Interestingly, neurotoxins will not fix it either. But according to some of the ads out there, there are plenty of cheap products that claim they do. Aesthetics is a jigsaw puzzle, and by that I mean that we need to address many layers of the skin, muscles, capillaries and so forth – and this is why resultsdriven non-surgical procedures, which require various skill sets and professionals to address the many complex factors making up our skin concerns, are increasing in popularity. The non-surgical industry is a collection of expertise and knowledge working in sync to create optimum health for our clients. The following non-surgical treatments are becoming popular for their ability
www.salonmagazine.ie
to produce results fast: Micro needling/dermal needling: a percussion or roller concept that induces growth factors by means of inducing erythema/pin prick bleeding with a view to triggering trauma and in turn collagen synthesis (0.6-1.5mm). Meso needling: this is a similar device to dermal needling except instead of inducing trauma, its objective is to channel the chosen serum further into the skin than a hand-applied product could penetrate (0.2-0.5mm). Microdermabrasion: typically crystal or diamond tips are used to mechanically remove the top excessive dead skin cells with a view to polishing and perfecting the texture. IPL: intense pulse light is photosensitive light technology that attracts itself to a specific chromophore. It targets capillaries / pigment / bacteria and coagulates it. Chemical peels: typically an enzyme/chemical-based gel/ cream that penetrates into the skin encouraging your skin’s natural skin turnover. It’s worth noting that there are different severities and extremes of peels; individual ingredients each serve various purposes and clinical end points. LED light: a non light-sensitive treatment that is becoming increasingly popular as it’s cost effective to run from a clinician’s perspective; it also targets various cells within the skin. It is reported to assist serotonin levels, pigment, anti-ageing and hydration, and its reparative and regenerative abilities stretch far beyond the facial zone.
If you want to sell more services and home care products, improve your consultation, says Liz McKeon
I
t is a therapist’s job to treat people’s skin. Therefore, it is imperative that a thorough consultation is conducted for every client that undergoes a beauty treatment or wants to buy products. There are two very significant reasons for doing a skin analysis: 1. It provides a point of difference for the therapist when compared to purchasing from a store or pharmacy. In a salon, the client is recommended specific products that are determined by a skin specialist to produce the best possible results. 2. Once a client places herself in the position of allowing you to look closely at her skin, you now have the right to prescribe home care products as well as in salon treatments. The simple fact that you are standing over the client in a position of authority, as an expert in your field, allows you to direct the client towards the most appropriate skin care products. Start to think of treatments and home care as a combined service, and communicate this to the client. The best way to accomplish a great consultation is to ask relevant questions, enabling you to establish your client’s needs. Attention to detail is the key to a successful salon. Asking questions is a skill which needs to be practised, especially if you want to find out what your client thinks. How you frame your questions has to be considered. Start to give as much attention to the questions and the consultation process, as the treatment. There are two types of questions: open and closed.
1. Closed questions are to be avoided as the client needs only to answer yes or no, making having a conversation quite difficult. 2. Open or leading questions will require a more detailed response and are a good way to break the ice, helping to put a new client at ease. After you ask a question, the next step is obviously to listen to the answer. During the consultation, treat your client with the utmost courtesy: • Use positive body language, provide encouragement and confirm you have been listening by nodding and agreeing with the points discussed. • Maintain eye contact. • Never interrupt your client. • Do not formulate your reply until the client has finished speaking, as you may need to gather all the facts. • By actively listening you may pick up what isn’t being said, as well as what is being told to you. If you want to increase your retail sales, remember to discuss the client’s current home care regime. Ask in depth questions about current product usage. If the client uses lots of products, that is brilliant because she is used to purchasing home care. If she is a soap and water user, that is equally brilliant because now you can educate this client on the benefits of investing in your quality products. Remember that consultations are a legal requirement. In the event of a problem arising, failure to perform a consultation could invalidate your insurance. But, as well as a legal requirement, you need to keep a written record of details because you will need to information to refer back to for future appointments. And, update the written records each time the client visits.

Get Online
Peninsula Business Service on how to handle office romances
ccording to research carried out in the US, $2,200 (€1,952) is the average amount spent on a website by local businesses, so it’s no wonder that approx 70%80% of salons have no website presence at all, with many only having a Facebook page. The impact of how the millennial generation consumes products and services has been huge and this is not slowing down, with them spending up to 4.5 hours per day online. As this is a key target market for all salons, 2017 must be a year for salons to really focus on getting a website for their hair or beauty business. • Salons don’t have the time to organise it and get it built. • Salons don’t want to spend a large amount up front • Salons don’t want to have to manage a website on an ongoing basis as they are too busy running their business. • Salons often don’t have the technical expertise to deal with issues when they arise and need support in this regard.
W
ith Valentine’s Day approaching, according to a recent survey of 8,000 workers, four out of 10 employees have dated someone at work; 17% have done it more than once. Given the amount of time that we spend at work it’s not surprising that many people find their life partner at work. Prohibiting workplace relationship is unrealistic, but employers would be advised to consider these top 10 tips: Check your Existing Policies and Procedures: Are you existing policies and procedures able to deal with any problems that might arise from office romances? Encourage staff to notify management of an office romance: This might seem awkward or over the top, but it’s important that management are aware of the relationship, so they can decide whether or not appropriate steps need to be taken. Failure to let you know might cause problems later on. Don’t Ignore it: If the employee doesn’t report it, but it becomes known to a management that a personal relationship between staff has developed, that might impact on their work, that’s the time to act. Think about Changing the work environment: It might be sensible to consider with reporting relationships or management structures need to be changed. This should be discussed with the people affected. This may be sensible to avoid any suspicion arising of favouritism. Watch out for Favouritism:
www.salonmagazine.ie
Richie Spence of SalonMonkey.ie looks at the The Top 5 reasons your salon needs to get online
Make sure that members of staff who are engaged in relationships with colleagues are not involved in any management decisions involving partners. It’s important that such decision are seen to be made impartially. Don’t be afraid of Taking Action: Treat any complaints of favouritism seriously and take action. Training for managers: Most managers lack training on how to tackle workplace romances. Managers need to know how to manage such situations, the potential risks and how to stop problems. Be especially around work social events: Christmas parties or work social events are often the source of office romances. It’s a good idea to remind staff that they are still expected to abide by company policies.
A
for doing an online search is to find the location for a ‘known’ business. Your salon needs a good, clean and responsive website to help your existing customers find you. Open 24/7: A website ensures that your business is essentially open to clients 24/7. With the busy lifestyles many of your potential clients have today, a huge number of potential customers are researching products and service providers in the evening, when your salon is closed. Credibility: Research carried out by Brightlocal analysed the key things people look for in local websites. Consumers, especially the younger generation, give more credit to local businesses that have a clean and smart online presence.
Be mindful of your obligations to maintain a safe workplace Sexual harassment and bullying can often arise in the context of workplace romances. Taking action now will help to maintain a professional environment for all your staff.
Reach New Customers: Having a website is especially important for small businesses. According to a study carried out by Neilsen, 85% of customers use the internet to find a local business with 59% of mobile users who look for local information visiting the business on the same day! Salons must understand that the first port of call for many potential new clients when searching for anything is online via their mobile phones and not embracing this is like saying ‘I don’t want any new clients’.
Website vs Facebook page While Facebook is great, and one of many social tools that should be used by all salons to keep in touch with their existing client base, it was not designed to be a business’s only online voice. SalonMonkey research of over 500 girls aged 18-34 showed that they want to see the following on a salon website: • Salon services • Salon prices with NO hidden costs • To be able to book online • To see pictures of previous clients • To be able to navigate a website easily • That the website is up to date and simple to use.

Help existing customers find you: According to research carried out by ComScore, the No.1 reason
For more information please visit SalonMonkey.ie or call on 01 443 3072
What about when things go wrong: Of course not all romances blossom. Problems might arise if an office romance or relationship ends. It can potentially impact on an employee work performance or impact on professional relationships at work.
Phyt’s Against Winter
BUSINESS OF BEAUTY
The winter and the festive season can really mess with our skin. We showcase some Phyt’s products to recommend to your clients Winter Skin Care Essentials From summer to winter the skin indeed changes, and quickly. Once we reintroduce central heating, the skin is automatically going to become dehydrated with the lack of moisture in the air. All the diverse temperatures and festive overindulgences can also cause dehydration from within our internal organs. Winter products depend on the skin: sometimes they need to be rich, creamy textures or oily serums. At other times combination to oily skin requires a lighter base moisturiser with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid based to balance hydration and oil. Contact: www. phytsireland.ie. TOTALCARE ZONING IN Who needs botox and surgical lifting when clients can visit you to have a regular Zoner Treatment? Totalcare Ltd trains students on this machine with the various techniques to get the best results. Clients are guaranteed to see instant results. How does it work: Radio Frequency is a pleasant heat to combat the signs of skin ageing for face and body by performing skin tightening and rejuvenation. The thermal energy of Radio Frequency can be used on all skin types allowing for ultimate collagen contraction and production of new collagen. Infra red works on the deeper level between muscle and connective tissue especially where frown and expression lines are evident. Infra Red relaxes expression lines, tones and lifts the facial contours. Electroporation is a dynamic phenomenon to introduce carefully selected natural products directly into the cell. In totalcare we use Electra Cosmetics know as third generation millennium cosmetics for the treatment of skin lifting, anti-wrinkle, acne and pigmentation and anti-age spots. One treatment every 10 days and depending on age/results required your therapist will recommend a program for you of 3 to 6 sessions and maintenance once every 5 weeks. BioStimCell Ergonomic handpieces with Panestetic design and best row materials for an easy-to-use, hygienic and effective tool. The Photobiostimulation is very important for “antiage” and for an healthy skin, primarily for the quality of skin texture and also for its effect on the fine lines, skin tone and for the increase of the cell turnover in the skin surface.
Radiolift One handpiece with interchangeable heads, face and body, recognised by the system which automatically set the radiofrequency depending on the area in which the operator wants to perform the treatment. Today, the Radiofrequency is for sure the less invasive and comfortable method to have a younger and brighter look in a few treatment. Filling and lifting results are visible right after the first treatment. The result improves in the following 4/6 months. The Benefits of this dynamic trilogy technology: 1. Less visible wrinkles, bags and shadows under the eyes 2. More clearly defined face contours. 3. Reduced frown & expression lines 4. Stimulation of fresh cells and new collagen.
