OF INTEREST UNEMPLOYMENT IS FALLING The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD released the Monthly Unemployment figures for February published by the Central Statistics Office, showing that the official unemployment rate has fallen from 6.7% in January to 6.6% in February and from 8.4% in February 2016. The statistics also show: • On a seasonally adjusted basis, 2,900 fewer people were unemployed in February compared to January.

db Bridal What’s involved in getting a bride’s hair ready for her big day? There is so much of an onus on hair quality and lustre. The team at Dylan Bradshaw bridal explain their perspective on bridal hair When should a bride-to-be should start going to the hair dresser to get hair wedding ready? It is never too soon for a bride to start their preparation for healthy hair, but we do recommend that they have a consultation with their stylist at least six months prior to the wedding. At this stage, they can discuss what they want to achieve with the cut, colour and eventual styling on the big day. We can usually achieve the bride’s (or groom’s) dream hair colour within approximately 6 months or even earlier. Changing hair colour is best done well in advance so that they have adequate time to ensure that they’re happy with it. Our team, including the International Winners of the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Award 2016, will offer advice on the best shade suited to their skin tone and eye colour, and the must-have treatments to ensure their hair is in the best condition for all to see on the day!
What’s involved in getting hair bridal ready We think the first mistake many brides make is to focus on a ‘style’ for the day. We encourage our clients to look deeper than that, to treat their hair as they would their skin in the build up to their big day. We don’t hesitate to spend money on facials but can have a tendency to overlook hair. There is nothing more beautiful than healthy shiny hair, so we work with our brides to choose the right products, protection, hydration and colour services so that their hair is in its best condition. Products: The wrong choice can have a huge impact on the texture, condition, colour and appearance. We advise our brides to be to use hair masks regularly to replace lost moisture. Kerastase Masque Chroma Captive, is a shineintensifying masque for hair that has been colour-treated all over. Hair is left smooth and shiny and the colour is protected. We offer many hair care ranges at Dylan Bradshaw but a favourite is Shu Uemura Colour Lustre Shampoo. It prevents colour from fading, protects the hair fibre, and balances the scalp’s natural oils. Follow this with the Shu Uemura Colour Lustre Brilliant Glaze Conditioner, which provides lightweight conditioning and polished shine from midlengths to ends while preserving the hair’s colour. Castle Wonders Our lucky Spa Spy travelled to Mayo to check out the opulence and West of Ireland warmth of Ashford Castle
O
verlooking Lough Corrib lake, on 350 acres of land lies Ashford Caslte, near Cong in Mayo (Quiet Man country). It’s moulded within a tamed west of Ireland landscape and dates back to the 13thcentury. Its restoration is a credit to its owners. You realise on entry their commitment to the preservation and how it’s so true to its origins. The drive through the beautifully landscaped gardens, by the golf course and by the many joggers and cyclists was a tranquil and welcomed treat after a long journey. Ashford Castle was as I imagined it to be, draped in all the lavish furnishings you would expect of a 13th century castle; walls covered in century-old oil paintings, amazing fireplaces, a suit of armour in each corner and a labyrinth of public rooms, with halls draped in so much history. It wasn’t too many whiskeys that made you imagine that the walls whispered and if you closed your eyes for just one second you you felt you were back in that time. Each bedroom had its own personality, and I can only imagine the smile on the face of the interior designer when they received their brief for decorating the rooms. As I travelled with my family (which includes two young children) the games room and cinema were a very welcomed surprise. I love the romanticism associated with a beauty Spa. The want and need to escape the stresses and monotony of daily life and fall into the arms of a willing therapist - whose only job is to make you feel comfortable and loved! The Spa at Ashford Castle is the escape you need. Although, very much a part of the castle you cannot stop
feeling like you are somewhere completely different from the time you enter. It is a sanctuary of bright and calming treatment rooms, 5 to be exact, friendly and attentive therapists not to mention the beautiful views of the castle gardens and Lough Corrib from the pool, the gym and from the terrace area. Treatments are performed by a team of highly trained therapists who perform massage, face and body therapy, body wraps and scrubs, marine therapy, waxing, manicure and pedicure and holistic treatments. The Spa not only caters for the ladies but also for men and under 16’s too, so it can be a family day out. The products used with the treatments are high-end professional products, Voya, B|Africa, Elemis, Essie and the Pure Flow system. The Interior of the spa is breathtaking. From the “Tree of life” mosaic in the pool area that was created by South African artist Jane Du Rand, which stretches across an entire wall, to the bronze conservatory that was designed by French architect Philippe Bonino. The Spa is decorated in lightly toned greys, creams and earthy greens and is naturally lit by large windows boasting views that literally take your breath away. To say I enjoyed myself is an understatement, and I say that with a truly honest heart. My partner and my children were spoilt during their stay and many a fairytale was written with my children the main characters of their story. Good Acid Jennifer Rock, aka The Skin Nerd discusses Glycolic Acid - is there a renaissance happening?
G
lycolic acid - an alpha hydroxyl acid is deemed an ‘active’ ingredient. Glycolic is the smallest molecule in the family, and it has been used in OTC Products, Cosmeceutical and in-clinic procedures alike for decades. Since it is the smallest molecule, it means it has the ability to penetrate into the lower layer of the skin at a faster seed when compared to other alpha hydroxyl acids. This has positives and negatives; which will be discussed below! In its raw state, Glycolic is a powder made up of colourless crystals that have no scent. It is often derived from beetroot, sugar beets and sugar cane and so is marketed as ‘natural’, ‘from food’. It operates in a ‘pacman - style’ pincer movement dissolving the glue that binds the dead skin cells together i.e. the desmosomes within the skin. Dead skin cells are sloughed off as a result of the acid penetration, kickstarting the skin’s natural skin renewal process. Products range in percentage of concentration and ph levels. The percentage can often be an indication of the shedding that is inevitable. The higher the percentage the more the shed, the less I would suggest you use / expose yourself to. If you are exposed to a higher percentage than your particular skin can tolerate you may experience dryness, redness, itchiness and possible flakiness. Anything above a 10% needs to be used with caution and with advice from a brand representative.

A secondary benefit of Gylcolic acid is the moisture it can draw towards the tissue (skin). However, it may cause sensitivity as the skin when exfoliated is more susceptible to daylight and sunlight. SPF is always suggested but in particular in conjunction with the use of acids. Similarly, when using Glycolic acids it is ideal to use it in conjunction with hydrating cleansers in order to counter balance the initial dehydration such an exfoliating ingredient can initially cause. It is typically used for treating: • Thickened skin • Scarred, hyper keratinised skin • Skin discolouration such as age spots • Blotchy skin • Uneven texture • Mature skin • Preventative measures It is not ideal for • Eczema • Psoriasis • Irritated • Reactive • Thin skin A well-established and respected ingredient adored by professionals worldwide it is not being rivalled by lactic acid - a larger molecule which limits the rate at which the ingredient will plough in through the skin’s surface; yet gains similar results in a more respectful manner.

t is awards season again here and abroad. Ireland’s and further afield’s finest get dressed up in their Sunday best and parade the red carpet hoping to be photographed! With that in mind, I have picked some of my favourite looks from the red carpet make-up and hair dos and the don’ts! Lilly Collins had one of the loveliest make-up looks this awards season. I loved her look, because of the contrast of colours, the soft pink on the eyes and the pale skin with the bright red over the lips worked really well, along with the soft upstyle she had at the Golden Globes. I have a lip colour in my Make-up/Play range called Monroe (€20) that would work really well with this look! Pink on the eyes can be really hard to wear but teamed up with the red lip and tons of mascara it looks knock-out! In my take of this look I added a black liner to the inside of the lid to make the eyes pop! I used Onix pencil form Makeup/Play range (€15). The eye shadow in my photo is called Red Revolution (€15) - when blended down it goes pink and over that I used a shimmer called Sandra D (€20) - a loose powder shimmer in a deep gold bronze! This works really well over the matt pink undertones. When you have a look like this with a strong lip and coloured eye use a touch of pink on the cheeks, I used Yomico C (€20) on the model’s cheeks. Using the 202 Tapered Blender brush with 14kgold & Oh My Orange eyeshadows, dust into the crease from outer to inner corner.

Using the 211 Perfect Brow brush with a cream eye shadow base, carve out the mobile lid starting at the inner tear duct and working your way out to your darkest colour on the outer corner.
Using the 110 Flawless Concealer brush, apply the iLine sealer adhesive directly on top of the cream eyeshadow base on the mobile lid. Press on Eye Shimmers Moondust, Mango Pink and Berry Bronze on the wet base starting at inner corner of the eye.
Using the 200 Blown Out brush, focus the Red for Real & Chocolate Kisses eyeshadows in the crease line only.
STEP 5.
Using the 209 Pointed Liner brush, apply Luxe Crème Liner from inner to outer corner then create a wing. Using 206 The Bullet brush pack Moondust onto inner corner.

Using the 212 Iddy Biddy brush, mix the iLine sealer adhesive with Beige Breeze Eye Shimmer into a gel consistency. Apply to the crease line and across the wing and connect on outer corner. Use soft light strokes to create a nice thin line.

Using Fuschia’s Mink Effect Lashes in the style Marilyn, trim and glue to top lash line. Using the 215 Duo Fibre Definer, buff 14kGold, Oh My Orange and Red for Real eyeshadows on bottom lash line.
Using the 209 Pointed Liner brush with the Luxe Crème Liner, apply onto waterline, then using 213 The Smudger brush blend directly on top to smudge the liner down into the lashes. Pop on some Superlash black mascara to finish.

The students only started training in mid-September, so we are so proud of the amazing work and effort the students have put in to produce such an impressive calendar’. Using Plumette With Excitement and a Mini Striper Brush, create three triangle designs to the nail. Cure for 30 seconds.

With Days in the Sun and the Mini Striper Brush, create three additional triangle shapes. Using Enchanted Patina and the Mini Striper Brush, paint the final triangle designs onto the nail to complete the pinwheel design.

No information on who works for you on your website By posting information on the education and specialisation of the given therapist, you immediately improve the prestige of the salon, and such a description, accompanied by a photograph will surely instil trust and will encourage the client to visit your salon. Rather unattractive, templatebased general website Pop-up windows, lots of text, boring small fonts make - all make a website lose attractiveness and no one will want to browse the extensive amounts of text in search of information. Make it clear from the start. No customer feedback Opinions of satisfied clients will encourage others to use your services. Ask frequent clients to write something about you on social media.

Invisible salons Scream that you’re here! An advertisement for special offers on the salon window will suffice. Remember displays for Halloween, Christmas or Valentine’s Day - show that you and your staff have a sense of fun. The Trade Let’s participate in fairs and conferences. Let’s read professional press. Cosmetics is an industry, which is subject to continuous change and development. Unused potential of the surroundings Look around. Are there any hairdressers, gyms, nutritionists, coffee shops in the neighbourhood? Talk to the owners, take the initiative and start a little mini-co-op. Advertise your services together, even on each other’s counter this really works! If you want to be successful, you need to look objectively at your previous actions and find and correct any possible mistakes. Read through the list above, and then - from a distance - look at your own website, salon and its surroundings, its offer and personnel. There is always something worth improving. New Hope The beauty industry can be a fickle place, how can you find out for sure if a new treatment will attract new clients and increase your profit margin? Liz McKeon finds out
T
he beauty industry changes and develops at a great and sometimes monumental rate and it is our job to keep up with trends if we are focused on meeting our clients’ needs. Working out what your clients want before they know they want it is the best way of strengthening your salon. If you can identify the trends in the industry and the products that are getting attention then it will be obvious to you what to invest in next. Ask yourself ‘what else’ will help you to stay one step ahead of the competition. There will always be trends that will have an influence over the future of your business – strive to keep on top of industry news by making time for activities like reading trade magazines, attending trade fairs, etc.
Also, analyse trends: it isn’t automatically the case that you will make more money if you follow them; sometimes you will make more progress by sticking to what you are currently offering. If your business is making a nice profit and doing well, it’s very easy to carry on as you are. However, as soon as you think you’ve got enough, you become lazy and lose ground to your competition. Keep asking yourself what else you should be offering clients, stay alert to opportunities, keep yourself motivated and your business on its toes.
