Proportion is utilized in the construction of nail enhancements and/or maintenance of any natural nail. Proportion is the direct correlation of size, distance, amount and ratio between the individual characteristics when compared to the whole. Whether deciding on a length or shape for nails or creating a nail enhancement, the proper ratio will create beauty and balance. Exceptions to this rule are your Guest’s lifestyles, working conditions or special occasions, where an extreme nail art design may be desired.

RATIO OF 2/3 FOR NAIL LENGTH When choosing a nail length, it is best to think of the nail in 3 segments. The ideal proportion of the nail plate should be 2/3 of the entire nail, and the free edge should be 1/3. This creates a balanced appearance and provides strength and durability to the nails. As a licensed professional, you help to provide your Guest with the proportionate nail length, whether creating artificial nails or encouraging daily treatments to enhance the natural nail. Short nails may help balance very long fingers and long nails can provide a lengthy appearance to short fingers. Wide fingers may be balanced by creating oval or pointed shape fingernails. A square or squoval nail shape can provide the illusion of width to narrow fingers.

INTERESTING FACT: To properly shape and/or file nails, always file starting at left corner, sliding the file straight out to the center of the nail; then perform the same procedure on the right side corner towards the center of the nail. Never use a ‘sawing’ motion (pulling back and forth with file).

To date, close to one million dollars has been raised for local anti-domestic violence programs across the country. Our annual National Day of Beauty event is held each October. On this day, 100% of proceeds from our student clinics are donated to local women’s shelters. Each year The Hair Design Schools honor police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians serving on the front lines of domestic violence through our First Responders Day event. The Hair Design School students receive training to identify signs of domestic abuse and refer clients to people who can help. Additionally, The Hair Design Schools support other local initiatives through partnerships with various non-profit organizations in their area.
