While one might view the word "vanity" as a negative notion, attached to the sense of excessive consideration of one’s appearance or shallowness. I, however, encourage you to take a moment and reconsider. May I suggest that we take on another meaningful but scarce definition of the word? Vanity can also be defined and used as an incredibly empowering expression. It can be delineated as to have excessive pride in one’s abilities or achievements, to showcase one’s talents, especially as a writer, composer, actor, or singer. The latter definition could not have been a truer and more essential characterization for the Fashion West Summer Issue or the Vanity show coming to Denver on June 12th. The Vanity show and sumer issue are not only inspired by the idea of vanity but also notably with Pride Month in mind. Pride for me, as it did in the 1970s when it was inaugurated, is about love. Not only letting others choose who and how they want to love, but by showing love to others with respect, support, kindness, and equality. The pages of this issue are flooded with the most extraordinary sense of vanity and pride. Overflowing with the talents of our creative directors, photographers, designers, stylists, models, and visionaries. The juxtaposition between our cover photo, an avant-garde bridal spread, a vintage couture concept shot in a trailer park sprinkled among the picturesque scenes of Hawaii never seize to amaze me. Each abstraction inspired and produced with love and pride. The show in this regard will be no different from the premise of this issue. The runway will be filled with our remarkably talented designers from the West. Presenting their interpretation of summer in collaboration with brilliant hair and makeup stylists and models. Many of these designers, amongst dozens of other designers will have popup shops throughout the show, showcasing their art, craftsmanship, and personal love story through their work. I hope you feel the love, creativity, and inclusive spirit of this issue. I could not be prouder of the individuals who gave their entire selves through their work on these pages. They are courageous, beautiful, unapologetic, and for me the most important aspect, completely, indisputably themselves. I am, but even more in light of Pride Month right around the corner, immensely honored to be a part of this magazine and the safe, inclusive space it has and will continue to create for individuals. We could not be more thrilled to celebrate Pride Month through this issue and in our Vanity show on June 12. We hope to see you there and spread the love that is the West. Ciao for now,

LANDRY AGRES From 8 to 14 years old, his great passion was wooden sculpture. Sculpture was everything, even a vocation to become his profession. Although, at the same time, from the context, he felt that he had no other choice. However, when he was 14 he was demotivated at school and quit it, arguing that it was not a job with a future. The alternative was hairdressing, a decision he never doubted. He began his training as an apprentice in a salon in a small town in the south of France. Only he and his boss were there. He completed his training in 5 years, obtaining all diplomas in Hairdressing, with an eager attitude to learn everything and every day.
He always wanted to travel and see the world, but he took the step when he was 17 after seeing a Toni & Guy show. From there he felt the deep desire to work with them, moving to London at 21. Once there, and without speaking a single word of English, he managed to start working at Toni & Guy. He did it for 15 years in London, Sydney and Valencia, until he opened his own Tony & Guy salon in San Sebastián, Milk, in 2011. fashionwest.org

The collection is inspired by the knights who were members of the French equestrian order and hence takes its name, Chevalier. The looks recreate some concepts from classic French hairdressing, which creates high volume waves, solid haircuts with dense bangs to create defined styles, and clean, natural textures. CHRISTIAN RÍOS A hairdresser who embodies an artistic and multidisciplinary skillset. His passion and curiosity for design, fashion, styling, gardening and gastronomy are evident. From a young age, Christian travelled through the universe of art and creativity, looking for a clear vocation in which he could focus and develop his talent. Sometimes we find people along the way who show us our own worth. Christian was lucky enough to meet Clemente, the owner of a hairdressing salon he used to go to; Clemente, intuiting the emerging capabilities of his client, encouraged him to train and enter the world of hairdressing and styling. That's how Christian Ríos began his career, starting out as an apprentice and working his way up to manager in a salon with a team of 15 people. Currently, he is the head of his own hairdressing business, “Christian Ríos Hair Couture Salon”, located in the old town of Vilanova i la Geltrú. The business is located in what was formerly an old wine store and later, a gardening shop. A renovated space in a unique and cozy environment, surrounded by nature, with simple designs that feature high ceilings and exposed iron beams, and which also includes individual pieces of furniture chosen in various antique shops. fashionwest.org

MANNEQUIN
by JOSEPH DIMARTINO In a world where silence has become so precious, mannequins represent that absence of sound. As you encounter them, they only express what their maker has given them. They become a canvas: a blank space where I can reinvent, recreate or simply allow the stillness to exist. Joseph DiMartino has lived in Brooklyn his entire life. The majority of his professional life was spent working in the fashion industry - hence the love of mannequins. Most of his interests still reside in the creative field: fashion, music, photography, and art. In the last few years he has found an interest in street photography, again an area of work where he can meld into the background.
