OUR SERVICES
Why Beck?
Our clients collaborate with us because of the way we think, so we can design better and build better.
What makes us different from other design-build teams is that we are one integrated firm, consisting of design and construction healthcare professionals— working together—and focused on a unified measure of excellence: your target!
From the beginning, we look projects holistically. We develop a plan, commit the resources, and bring expert disciplines onboard at the right time to ensure success.
02 01 03 THINK DESIGN BUILD Integrated Mindset and Approach
UNIFIED VISION: REDUCED OWNER RISK IN AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
Beck’s integrated model reduces the Owner’s risk by utilizing a single contract, which transfers risk to the integrated design-build entity. In the traditional designbid-build approach, the Owner pays for the scope gaps created by individually contracting with the architect and contractor.
Our integrated model eliminates the disconnect between design documents and construction costs by incorporating continual feedback from the full team throughout the design phase. This alignment allows us to guarantee the cost earlier in the process, resulting in less fee spent and an earlier decision to build.

Unified Vision
Target Value Delivery (TVD) is an essential part of the Beck Integrated Model and critical to ensuring that, throughout the design process, the entire team is aligned on the goals of the project and focused on hitting your strategic targets.
Now more than ever, changes made during the evolution of the design have the potential to significantly impact cost and schedule. Beck healthcare works as an integrated team, and it is our job to ensure timely and transparent communication.
The combination of Beck’s Integrated Model and a Target Value Design delivery reduces change orders compared to both traditional design-bid-build and CM @ Risk.
Target Value Delivery is an essential component of Beck’s integrated model to ensure alignment.

How We Collaborate
At its core, design is problem solving and decision making. There are thousands of decisions that make up a building. Most clients have a fuzzy idea of what they want and our iterative process allows us to collaborate with them to help answer these questions and develop the project.
This process helps our team to:
• Understand. We seek empathy and understanding of the problem (usually a building with a specific program).
• Inspire. We then seek inspiration or aspiration for what the building could be (framed by history, novelty, ambition). We brainstorm and workshop with a client to generate ideas.
• Iterate. We then create and develop those ideas into some testable form.
• Refine. Through a process of review and validation, we let the best ideas win and test then against constructability, cost, and schedule.
WHY BECK?
Beck’s design thinking does not stop, we constantly iterate to develop the optimal solution.

Our Design Philosophy
How we approach Design at Beck: Integration.
Beck’s architectural practice is organized as a collaborative team of architects, designers, interior designers, and planners who work on a common goal—your project. When you work with us, you will notice that Beck has a unique approach, because of our integrated nature as architects and construction experts, we leverage our best resources to bring you value. Our design team leans on our cost estimators to deliver cost-certain design, and our superintendents to inform us on constructibility.
We are better designers because we are builders, and better builders because we design.
Healthcare design is about designing through the lens of your patients and caregivers.
First, we are focused on understanding your processes, whether they change and are set for improvement or if they operate as is. Our expertise as designers and consultants allows us to consider and mitigate key pain points, including staffing, market conditions, and operational bottlenecks. While considering all these dimensions, our design philosophy includes triangulating these and designing a space that functions well for your patients, caregivers, administrators, and all others. By understanding all processes by engaging your users and administrators, we can build the optimal space, blocking, and stacking that is functional for the life of the building. As an integrated design firm, we have the ability to think about project cost at the onset, to ensure your building is constructible within your defined budget.
WHY BECK?
We are guided by four values:

Once defined, the Beck team assembles a framework that evaluates and proposes a strategic vision for existing or future spaces. By evaluating the systems involved in the facilities and provide an assessment of ways to maximize efficiencies of services lines while allowing growth in the most fiscally responsible manner. The goal of a master plan is to ensure that the healthcare provider continues to contribute world-class services and has the facilities to complement their work.

Preconstruction
Thanks to evolution in the industry over the last 20 years, owners can engage preconstruction teams much earlier in the design process. We are passionate about offering enhanced preconstruction services because we know the 10x return on investment that each additional of planning provides during project construction.
Beck preconstruction and construction team members engage in the project to assist the team in establishing an accurate overall project budget and advise on constructibility issues to eliminate impacts to cost and schedule. This allows a greater degree of accurate cost information earlier in the process and affords the opportunity for the team to explore more options and achieve a higher level of design within the established budget.

INTEGRATED ESTIMATING
Instead of waiting on a BIM model and design documents, we utilize a collaborate process to ensure on-going design is within budget. Beck’s preconstruction team can connect directly to the project’s Revit model to support estimating and analysis as a single source of truth. This unique workflow increases the accuracy and integrity of the estimating process.

Working with all stakeholders, we create real-time project dashboards for open and transparent communication for important project stats.
NATIONAL EXPERTISE
National knowledge of material and labor pricing trends are extremely important to cost control. We generate and release our Beck Cost Report to our clients throughout the nation; the elaborate research that goes into creating the report makes us very aware of our markets. TEXAS HEALTH HUGULEY HOSPITAL
Seeking to enhance patient experience, Texas Health Huguley hired Beck to master plan the addition of a new patient tower for their campus. The final design includes a new public lobby and administrative areas on the ground floor, a women’s services floor with two c-section suites, eight LDRs, 20 post-partum rooms and a nursery, three levels with med/surg units and 36 inpatient beds per floor. The top level remained as a shell floor to accommodate future growth of the Fort Worth community. Reflecting changes in healthcare over the past three decades, while the hospital’s original private patient rooms were just 147 SF each the rooms in the new facility they are 300 SF each, giving more space for equipment and visiting family members.

MOFFITT CANCER CENTER AMBULATORY CANCER CENTER PROTOTYPE
Moffitt Cancer Center wanted to develop a new model for ambulatory cancer care and deliver it to the Tampa Bay community. As the market grows rapidly, Moffitt needs to respond quickly to build new centers as real estate becomes available. Our process started with engaging key operational and clinical stakeholders to understand how their existing ambulatory environment functions. The team collaborated with users and leadership to understand challenges and their vision among key dimensions of performance by capturing tensions and trade-offs. Our team developed a governance structure with Moffitt leadership to guide the project process. The governance decision-making is guided by the following indicators: patient experience (perception and timeliness), quality and safety, research mission, team experience and engagement, financial stewardship (productivity and cost), and growth.

As a trusted advisor, the client asked The Beck Group to create an integrated team create a community hospital that was emblematic of their two brands. A key guiding principle for the project was thoughtful site design to ensure patients could easily access the hospital and medical office building, also designed by Beck. The site allows for expansion, and the interior flow is planned to handle the growth of multiple programs as the needs of the community change. The bed tower patient rooms are standard, repeated same-handed beds for caregiver familiarity and efficiency as they move between units. COXHEALTH EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
CoxHealth outgrew their Emergency Department that had only 23 treatment rooms and an annual volume of 67,000 patients. The need for a new facility was critical. Beck’s integrated design/build team established a program that called for 57 exam rooms, five trauma rooms and 26 dedicated observation rooms. Beck designed the ED as a series of pod racetracks with a clinical spine to enhance staff flow and ease of access from low-acuity rapid evaulation unit, to trauma bays. The ED also includes a dedicated radiology department adjacent to the exam rooms for easy access and for faster decision making. Uniquely, the team helped Cox create an ED that responded to disasters and pandemics by allowing the ambulance bay to quickly transform into mass casualty and bioharzard patient intake.

CAROLINAS MEDICAL CENTER MAIN CAMPUS NEW BED TOWER AND CAROLINAS REHABILITATION HOSPITAL MASTER PLAN
Beck was responsible for master planning the redevelopment of Atrium health’s flagship campus in Charlotte, North Carolina. Working with over 3,000,000 sf on 72 acres in the heart of Charlotte, Beck devised the rezoning strategy, program, conceptual building designs, budgets and schedules for more than 1,900,000 sf of new buildings and 1,200,000 sf of renovation. The master plan required the team to understand the current state of the system and develop a series of strategic moves over several years, including sequencing inpatient beds, operating rooms, support services, and other key programmatic elements. The resulting plan allows for CMC to grow by adding a new bed tower and rehab hospital that supports the Charlotte community and the modernization needs of the system.

Beck master planned and budgeted a multi-phased expansion and renovation of CHS Pineville. The scope included a 200-bed inpatient tower, emergency department expansion, surgical suite renovation, and parking deck. Beck utilized target value delivery and advanced planning and budgeting to create conceptual, continuous cost estimates for the life of the project. The draft and final deliverable allowed Atrium Health to quickly determine additional needs and wants based on the cost estimate and graphic including site options, stacking, and 3D programming for the long-term strategy of their Pineville hospital. Overall, Beck’s work was streamlined by bringing strategies from Atrium Health’s main campus (CMC) master plan that was also created by Beck.

PARKLAND HOSPITAL MAPLE AVENUE GARAGE
The design of the parking garage is a response to Parkland Hospital’s need to provide parking for the newly constructed OPC2. The five-story, cast-in-place concrete garage with one-way helical ramp provides 1400 parking spaces including 100 valet parking spaces and space for 73 bicycles. The queueing depth for the three entry and three exit lanes has been carefully designed for ease of entry and exit, to prevent back up into the interior circulation, to minimize spill out of vehicles into the public street, and to minimize idle time.
