Texas Health Recovery & Wellness Center | Mansfield, TX
Delivering calming spaces to those most in need.
Understanding the psychology behind the design of healthcare settings can significantly impact patient healing and stress levels, patient and staff safety, staff comfort and effectiveness, and ultimately, the quality of care given. At Beck, our healthcare team incorporates research and theory into innovative design concepts to achieve four overall goals: stress reduction, safety, ecological health, and wellness. A connection to nature, providing options and choices, and creating engaging diversions are all key design elements in a healing environment.
Eliminating stressors and allowing for purposeful social activities in healthcare settings has shown to benefit overall recovery, develop positive relationships and encourage continued wellness. In Behavioral Health facilities especially, the aforementioned design intentions help to eliminate the stigma frequently associated with accepting mental health treatment.

Why Beck?
Our clients collaborate with us because of the way we think, so we can design better and build better. What makes us different from other designbuild teams is that we are one integrated firm, consisting of design and construction healthcare professionals—working together—and focused on a unified measure of excellence: your target! From the beginning, we look projects holistically. We develop a plan, commit the resources, and bring expert disciplines onboard at the right time to ensure success.

Unified Vision: Reduced Owner Risk in an Integrated Approach Beck’s integrated model reduces the Owner’s risk by utilizing a single contract, which transfers risk to the integrated design‑build entity. In the traditional designbid-build approach, the Owner pays for the scope gaps created by individually contracting with the architect and contractor.
Our integrated model eliminates the disconnect between design documents and construction costs by incorporating continual feedback from the full team throughout the design phase. This alignment allows us to guarantee the cost earlier in the process, resulting in less fee spent and an earlier decision to build.

WHY BECK?
How We Collaborate
Beck’s design thinking does not stop, we constantly iterate to develop the optimal solution.
At its core, design is problem solving and decision making. There are thousands of decisions that make up a building. Most clients have a fuzzy idea of what they want and our iterative process allows us to collaborate with them to help answer these questions and develop the project.
This process helps our team to: • Understand. We seek empathy and understanding of the problem (usually a building with a specific program). • Inspire. We then seek inspiration or aspiration for what the building could be (framed by history, novelty, ambition). We brainstorm and workshop with a client to generate ideas. • Iterate. We then create and develop those ideas into some testable form. • Refine. Through a process of review and validation, we let the best ideas win and test then against constructability, cost, and schedule.
Go slow, to go fast. Think. 01

03
Charrette + Engage the Experts! Balance the needs of users and leaders
04

JPS Health Network Psychiatric Emergency Center
The Beck Group, along with architecture+ and Gensler, are designing a dedicated behavioral health emergency center that will serve adolescents and adults. The new facility will extend access to care with a fast-track triage area and observation units on the first floor, while patients requiring additional monitoring will be moved to the second floor for a 23-hour stay. Beck is leveraging their design expertise, along with its construction experience to enhance the design process by providing continuous cost estimating. This is important with the current supply chain, inflation, and project escalation fluctuations. The team also held early meetings between JPS, MEP, and Low Voltage to make system selections now for a more informed cost estimate. This comprehensive management approach will allow the team to deliver a cutting-edge emergency center that will serve patients when they need it most. CLIENT

Emory Decatur Hospital Behavioral Health Center Renovation
The Beck Group worked in collaboration with May Architecture and Emory Healthcare to enhance the existing facility by creating inpatient and seclusion rooms that included windows, desks for seating, and integrated showers to offer choice, control, and privacy. Group therapy rooms with exercise equipment are located just outside patient rooms on the third floor to allow for a hospitality feel. The clinical team will be able to closely monitor patients with in-unit nursing units on each floor, something that the facility did not have before. Family and visitor access was enhanced with dedicated separate waiting rooms with sally ports on each floor. Overall, all spaces were updated to be anti-ligature but were also designed to feel welcoming and not institutional. The design team engaged with three different departments to plan and design a space that will be collaborative, with enough space for staff lounges and offices with access to daylight to offer respite in this new facility. Texas Health Resources Mansfield Behavioral Health Center
With two parcels to develop, the Beck team conceptualized planning options that would allow the inpatient hospital to seamlessly blend in with the current wellness center. The exterior and interior planning focuses on ensuring patients have access to daylight during their stay. Patients and visitors drop-off and entry features a welcoming entry that is similar the Wellness aesthetic with a wood soffit and canopy. Staff could easily move between cohorts from pediatric to geriatric patients within a central corridor that allows them to access each unit securely. Patients would also able to use the central corridor to easily walk to the basketball court and other amenities. Two care team stations are situated between the four units so both can service each unit, with clear visibility down the corridors and to the patient rooms. CLIENT
