who is planning a Laser crossing to Sicily at the end of summer. Poulton had already attempted a crossing back in 1990, but had to retire following equipment failure and strong winds. Interestingly, his father Jeff had made the first crossing between Sicily and Malta in 1980. This time around, Poulton will be attempting the crossing to help raise funds for the Vikings Sailing Club, in order to make their new premises safe for use.

This year’s edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 was a spectacular race involving a record 70-yacht fleet. This magnificent collection of yachts raced the 600-mile course around 11 Caribbean islands at speeds in excess of 30 knots. The epic duel between Concise 10 and Phaedo3 was won by the latter, as the boat co-skippered by Brian Thompson crossed the finish line in 31 hours, 59 minutes and four seconds, breaking its own multihull race record set last year.

Back home, the Vikings Sailing Club organised the first race of the season, which attracted a good turnout.

Following a great debut onto the RC44 circuit last year, Yachting Events Limited has confirmed that the RC44 fleet will return to Malta for the spectacular grand final of the 2016 Championship Tour. The final will

WELCOME Time, as they say, is a cruel mistress. It is relentless in its passage, devastating in its effects. And to add a spike of cruelty, its passage is swifter when you are enjoying yourself, in pleasant company or in harmonious solitude.

In truth, it’s not time that is, in itself, cruel. Rather, it is its side-effect: change. Because everything changes. Everyone gets old. Bones grow tired, skin sags, the mind loses its sharpness as the hours, minutes and seconds expire.

Everything changes. Except for the sea.

Our national poet Dun Karm Psaila wrote a beautiful poem, Zaghzugh ta’ Dejjem, in which he describes the sea as an eternal youth.

So does TS Eliot, in his The Waste Land.

In Death By Water, he writes how Phlebas

the Phoenician, “forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell, and the profit and loss. A current under sea, picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell, he passed the stages of his age and youth, entering the whirlpool.”

The sea does not change. Every season, it is there, blue, grey and green, constantly changing mood yet always consistent. And as we prepare for another season at sea, it is there, inviting us to float on its soft belly. And as we set sail, right there, beyond the horizon, is the promise that we too can enjoy, at least for a few hours, the illusion of eternal youth.

Chris Poulton is getting ready for his challenge: making the Sicily to Malta crossing on board his Laser.

You are planning a Laser crossing in aid of the Vikings Sailing Club at the end of this summer– can you tell us more about this challenge?

The first crossing between Sicily and Malta was done way back in 1980 by my father, Jeff. The crossing took a total of 20 hours and 10 minutes due to very low winds. I attempted a crossing in April 1990 but was forced to stop after 35

miles due to equipment failure and strong winds reaching force 5-6. To my knowledge, this was the only attempt at breaking the record.

Last year, my good friend Paul Ellul crossed from Malta to Sicily by windsurfer – Phil’s crossing was my main inspiration to give the Laser crossing another shot. At the same time, while talking to

another good friend, Clive Chipperfield from the Vikings Sailing Club, I decided to use this event to raise awareness and funds for the club.

Vikings were unfortunately evicted from their premises at Hay Wharf in Valletta to make way for the new Armed Forces of Malta facility, and the premises they have now managed to lease from the government are in a very bad state of repair.

Limited funding has been secured through the intervention of YachtingMalta and these funds have been used up to make one area safe for use.

What distance will you cover?

The actual route can only be decided on the day, depending on the prevailing weather conditions. The target departure is either Pozzallo or Ragusa, ending at Hay Wharf, although the crossing may be reversed and we would leave from Hay Wharf heading for Sicily. A straight-line distance is 52 nautical miles, or 95 kilometres.

Will you be doing this challenge solo?

The Laser is a single-handed boat, so in this

sense, it will be a solo crossing. However, we have also decided to allow any other Laser sailors to participate in this attempt.

If other Laser sailors are interested in joining, they can get in touch with us via the website or Facebook page, and we will help. They will be expected to assist in collecting funds for the Vikings Sailing Club, and they will need to source an escort yacht, although we will definitely assist in this.

In what ways are you preparing yourself, and your boat, for the challenge?

Having until recently been away from dinghy sailing for a number of years, the first preparations I tackled were physical. I have been attending a gym for the past six months, and have also been cycling for the past two years. Apart from that, I have also been sailing the Laser at every opportunity.

The boat itself recently underwent considerable inspection with a few minor repairs. I am not modifying the boat in any way as the Laser

is a one-design boat that must adhere to very strict class rules. Every fitting has been inspected, and a few small items have been replaced in an effort to minimise equipment failure. I also plan to take spares of every item except the hull for the trip. We currently have two supporting yachts that will act as escort yachts, both for safety and for navigation.

How will this challenge help raise funds for the Vikings club?

The club has appointed a sub-committee for this challenge. We have set up a Facebook page and a website covering the event and we are actively talking to potential sponsors. We have also set up SMS numbers for donations, and have received some donations through this. One other idea is for the Vikings Sailing

Club to provide team-building events for corporate sponsors, and so far this is being received quite positively. Sponsors will be mentioned on both the website and the Facebook page. We are also prepared to have a sponsor’s logo on the Laser’s sail, if the amount of sponsorship warrants this.

What will the funds be used for?

The Vikings Sailing Club were evicted from their premises some two years ago to make way for the new AFM facility, and the premises leased from the Government are not adequate for the operation of a dinghy sailing club.

The club has already used some funding to make one garage safe to use, and to level of and concrete an open space, to be used as a dinghy park. Funds are still required to alter

the slipway and to demolish and rebuild the roof of a garage to house sailing dinghies, rescue boats, and other club property.

This garage is presently not safe to use.

What events does the Vikings club have planned for this season?

The Vikings Sailing Club has, for a number of years, provided tuition through Kunsill Malti għall-Isport, and this will continue.

As a result of a successful open day held on April 17, the club has also received a number of applications for evening courses for adults this summer. There are also dinghy races in the pipeline. Apart from dinghy sailing Vikings has also organised a number of keelboat races, and the first one held on April 16 was an outstanding success.

A magnificent fleet of 70 yachts gathered for the RORC Caribbean 600.

The result: a spectacular race.

T

he eighth edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 started in spectacular style with the record 70-yacht fleet gathering in the starting area outside English Harbour, Antigua.

Under the Pillars of Hercules, the magnificent collection of yachts started the 600-mile race around 11 Caribbean islands. Five highly competitive starts thrilled hundreds of spectators lining the cliffs at Shirley Heights and Fort Charlotte. Not only was this a record fleet for the RORC Caribbean 600, it was undoubtedly the highest quality of participants since the inaugural race in 2009.

Hurtling around the Caribbean at speeds in excess of 30 knots and topping out nearer 40, often barely a boat length apart, the epic duel between MOD70s Concise 10 and Phaedo3 came to a conclusion after 32 hours of hot racing. Lloyd Thornburg’s MOD70 Phaedo3, co-skippered

by Brian Thompson crossed the finish line at Fort Charlotte in an elapsed time of 31 hours, 59 minutes and four seconds, breaking its own multihull race record set last year by one hour, 34 minutes and 26 seconds. Barely out of sight of each other the entire race, Tony Lawson’s MOD70 Concise 10, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield was just nine minutes and 52 seconds behind.

“Since we set the record last year we have got a lot better: our manoeuvres are improved and we are sailing a better course. This is the best group of sailors I have sailed with – there is nobody I would rather sail with than this group of guys. We weren’t thinking about the record at any stage because we were so focused on match racing Concise. We had to dig deep and they were doing the same,” Lloyd Thornburg, owner and skipper of Phaedo3, said.

Jim Clark and Kristy Hinze Clark’s American VPLP-Verdier 100 Comanche crossed the

finish line of the RORC Caribbean 600 with an elapsed time of 40 hours, 53 minutes and two seconds, taking monohull line honours for the race, just 33 minutes outside record pace.

“Comanche is built to come in first to finish and when Mother Nature co-operates we have the pedigree to break records,” was skipper Ken Read’s reaction to the wind coming from the south-east, making the leg from St Marten to Guadeloupe a beat, which for previous record holder Rambler 100 was a fast fetch.

“Going around these islands is a ball: whales breaching, volcanoes smoking, it doesn’t get any better than that. We will be back, I promise you – this is a great race,” Read said.

After a tremendous battle between Conor Fogerty’s Irish Sunfast 36, Bam and Susann Wrede’s German Swan 44, Best Buddies, Bam took line honours in an elapsed time of 83 hours one minute and seven seconds. Bam also won IRC One by just over six minutes. The team on Bam are all Irish, except Welshman Roger Smith and all live in Dublin.

“Going around these islands is a ball: whales breaching, volcanoes smoking, it doesn’t get any better than that” occasions, George Sakellaris’ Proteus was the first Maxi72 to finish the race, just over 20 minutes ahead of Dieter Schön’s Momo with Sir Peter Ogden’s Jethou third. Last year’s overall winner, Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente retired with keel problems.

Proteus completed the course in an elapsed time of 48 hours, 22 minutes and 16 seconds to score the best time after IRC correction to win the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy. Proteus was also the winner of the highly competitive IRC Zero class.

“We have beaten some great boats and the sailing was great, and we had a beautiful venue. During the race we had boat-on-boat action with all of the Maxi72s: Bella Mente, Jethou and Momo and their teams are all great sailors. I would like to congratulate all competitors for attending such a great, great event. I am glad to have been part of it. We hope to be back next year,” George Sakellaris, owner and skipper of Maxi72 Proteus said.

Eric De Turkheim’s French A13, Teasing Machine finished the RORC Caribbean 600 in an elapsed time of 68 hours to win IRC One and claim third overall for the race. In eight editions of the RORC Caribbean 600, no other boat under 50ft has made the podium for the overall prize.

Eric De Turkheim, owner and skipper of Teasing Machine said, “It was a big trip to get the boat here from Australia, including sailing 1,500 miles

upwind from Panama, but we knew we had the potential to do well in this race. This is a great race and I will always remember the leg from La Desirade to Barbuda, averaging 15 knots for 140 miles with full sail and warm water cascading down the deck: it couldn’t be better. We like to win but not at any cost. The ambience on board is fantastic and we were often toasting our performance with a small glass of red wine!”

Ross Applebey’s British Oyster 48, Scarlet Oyster finished the race in an elapsed time of 78 hours, 11 minutes and 12 seconds to win IRC Two for the fourth time.

“That was not an easy victory. At Saba we were last but one on the water. The crew dug in deep for the beat to St Barths: we clawed our way through the fleet and got into a good position for the big reach to Guadeloupe.

“Scarlet Oyster is very well set up for reaching and we edged ahead. The whole IRC Two fleet was south of Guadeloupe together, so we were never comfortable, especially as Andy’s (Middleton) EH01 stayed with us all the way.

I am never going to pretend Scarlet Oyster is a Maxi72, but we are proof that you can come to play on a charter boat and win at one of the world’s greatest offshore races. Scarlet Oyster has a regular core crew and I always tell new members to the team that the ‘600 is a tough race and we push hard,” Ross Applebey, owner and skipper of Oyster 48, Scarlet Oyster, said.

“Conor and all the team were over the moon.

We have never sailed together as a crew before, so to come here and win our class is brilliant. As the smallest boat racing in IRC and an amateur team, we knew it was going to be tough and the most important thing was just to keep going. Best Buddies kept reeling us in on the upwind legs and we were faster downwind. It was very tense at the finish. From a navigational point of view this is the toughest race I have done, the course is fabulous and you are always thinking about the next move,” Bam crew member, Simon Knowles, said.

The magnificent 213ft Spanish schooner, Adix completed the race in an elapsed time of two days, 19 hours, 33 minutes and five seconds and Gonzalo Botin’s Spanish Class40, Tales II finished over three hours before Adix. Both yachts are sailed by the same Spanish family.

Tales II was also the winner of the Class40 division for the third year in a row, breaking their own Class40 record by 11 minutes and 23 seconds to set a new Class40 record of two days, 16 hours, 26 minutes and 29 seconds.

“We had to do the last beat with our staysail so we thought the record was out of reach. On our family duel with Adix, all I can say is that I always thought it would be close in spite of the size and other differences. We did worry when we saw her lights in Guadeloupe only five miles astern. Fortunately at the end we managed to pull away. I can’t wait to hear what the guys on the big boat have to say,” Gonzalo Botin, owner of Class40, Tales II, said.

Antiguan entry Bernie Evan-Wong, racing RP37, Taz is the only skipper to have competed in all eight editions of the race.

“I had an awesome crew for this race and it is the fastest that I have ever done, so that is just great. We pushed really hard, we blew out a few sails but I didn’t want the crew to say we didn’t really go for it. The most memorable moment for me was passing within a boat length of the 100ft Comanche at night: absolutely amazing. She was gone with a flash. I was very thankful that we had a night moon and that they saw us.”

Piet Vroon’s Ker 51, Tonnerre 4 competed for the second year in a row. A back operation prevented Piet from taking part last year, but the 85 year-old Dutch master was racing this year, as captured by race photographer, Tim Wright at Redonda.

If an autumn finale in the Mediterranean conjures up images of balmy sun drenched days, think again. Last year Malta challenged the RC44 Valletta Cup competitors to the maximum, with the crews taking on gale force winds and some of the biggest waves they have ever encountered in their slender one designs.

The Vikings Sailing Club put up a great show for the first race of the season.

T

he first race for the Vikings Sailing Club for 2016 was welcomed with a great turnout with 13 boats in the fleet list.

The forecast was looking good, from light then picking up to a maximum of 15 knots in the afternoon. And that’s what it actually turned out to be: a light start in the morning leaving the heavier boats struggling at the start while the lighter racing boats flew past.

As the race progressed, there was a great battle between four boats. Xpresso being the highest rated boat was in the lead, but not by much leaving them in a big fight between themselves to try pull away.

Time-out took a gybe towards land where it looked as if there was a stronger breeze leaving them with

nothing but extra miles to sail. On the other hand Sail-Away took the shorter course, putting them in the best position half way throughout the race.

L’Artista had a slower start and was playing catch up all the way to Comino. Once rounding Comino, the sails tightened and off they went. Xpresso was still in the lead this time pulling away from their competition while Sailaway had a good advantage on the boats behind. With the wind picking up to 15 knots outside Mellieha Bay, it was a great show to the Valletta finish.

The cruisers on the other hand had a different course, with Vikings sailing club sending them round the tuna pens. At the end of a great day sailing, Xpresso and L’Una won their respective classes. A big well done goes out to all the boats which were racing for the first time.

A fleet of special yachts is preparing for the 64th edition of the Giraglia Rolex Cup.

The Giraglia is situated less than one nautical mile of the northern top of Corsica.

he Giraglia Rolex Cup, which this year celebrates its 64th edition, includes one of the most renowned offshore races in the Mediterranean.

Following races from Marseilles and San Remo, the fleet will gather in the chic harbour of Saint-Tropez for three days of inshore competition, before embarking on a 243Nm offshore race to Genoa, via the Giraglia, a rocky outcrop off the northern tip of Corsica.

The Giraglia Rolex Cup has run uninterruptedly since 1953 when it was created to build sporting friendship between France and Italy. A prevailing sense of camaraderie has always defined the competition. Partnered

by Rolex since 1998, the offshore race is the Mediterranean’s oldest and has a proud history.

This year, the Giraglia Rolex Cup will take place from June 10-18. The race is organised by Yacht Club Italiano in conjunction with Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and Yacht Club de France.

THE GRAND HARBOUR MARINA YACHT RALLY Every year beginning of the season, Grand Harbour Marina organises a Summer Kick-Off event, which for the past few years has taken place in the marina. The plan this year and for the next few is to establish a yacht rally once a year leaving and returning to the marina inviting all marina clients to participate. The idea would be to turn this event into an annual highlight for Grand Harbour Marina clients, creating hype and eventually establishing a date in the yachting calendar.

The Summer Kick-Off event is one of the largest events organised by the marina and is mainly targeted at the pontoon berth holders – yachts ranging from eight to 25 metres.

The Grand Harbour Marina forms part of the prestigious brand Camper & Nicholson Marinas International (www.cnmarinas.com/ghm) and attracts high-net worth individuals who choos to berth in the marina based on quality as opposed to price. Grand Harbour Marina’s clientele are mainly European, largely British and Nordics who like to visit the marina for weekend breaks, national holidays and for longer periods throughout the Mediterranean summer.

The proposed date for the Summer Kick-Off event is Friday, June 10. Those clients interested in participating will need to be ready and set up to leave the marina at 9am. Both sail and motor vessels of all lengths would head out of the Grand Harbour and up the east coast towards Armier on the northernmost point of the island. Yachts will be encouraged to arrive between 12 and 1pm. On arrival yachts will anchor in Armier Bay directly in front of Baia Beach Club where they will be met by a tender service. Once at the beach club area, visitors will be met with a welcome drink sponsored by No12 Fines Wines & Provisions and canapes. This will be a good moment for all clients and sponsors to mingle.

Once everyone has gathered clients will be moved upstairs to the terrace for a three-course lunch.

Afterwards everyone will have the opportunity to socialise, swim and enjoy chilled summer tunes. As in past years this event has always been offered complimentary and Grand Harbour Marina will be asking each yacht owner to limit the number of guests to a maximum of four people. A SPECTACLE AT SEA Having made her debut at this year’s Boot Düsseldorf Show in January, Princess Yachts have delivered the first hull in their new 30M Class. Named Kohuba, the yacht has since made her way to Malta where these images were taken.

Powered by twin MTU 16V 2000 M94 engines, she measures 30.45 metres and was the largest vessel on display at the 2016 Boot Düsseldorf show earlier this year.

Boot visitors were very interested in water tourism, chartering and fishing as well.

“And our fans are loyal to us”, Jungmichel was pleased to report. In Boot’s 47th year, many water sports enthusiasts first experienced the trade fair back when they were children and are now passing their passion on to the next generation.

The companies exhibiting complimented the trade fair on the further increase in the quality of the professional visitors. Specialists from the boat industry, the tourism industry and the service sector in particular took advantage of boot 2016 to hold intensive discussions and place orders with the corporate exhibitors.

More than 50,000 visitors came to Düsseldorf for the trade fair this year from European countries outside Germany and from overseas.

Jungmichel, who has been responsible for running the water sports trade fair since mid-2008, left Messe Düsseldorf at the end of February 2016 to go to Hamburg, taking over the position of secretary general and director of the German Sailing Association.

THE BIGGEST SPLASH The first Hanse 675, the biggest ship ever built by Hanse Yachts, hits the water.

T

he time has come for the Hanse 675 to hit the water. The floats are rigged and the new flagship of the HanseYachts AG is ready to sail in the port of Greifswald, Germany.

The 32-metre carbon mast reaches into the sky and gives the Hanse 675 its last touch, creating a 21-metre-long high-tech luxury yacht. The Hanse 675 not only breaks the record as the biggest ship ever built by the HanseYachts AG, but it is also Germany’s largest yacht build in series production.

“With emotion and high-tech, our new queen of the seas embodies the Hanse design philosophy of sensual clarity and modern luxury, an even more avant-garde interior and with fluid exterior lines, a milestone in series yacht building,” Dr Jens Gerhardt, CEO of HanseYachts AG, said.

As all Hanse yachts, the Hanse 675 was developed by judel/vrolijk & co. With clear shapes, smooth surfaces and the typical uncluttered deck layout, it conveys corresponding sportiness. The elongated teak fore deck as well as the flowing rooflines provide the perfect place to enjoy the sun.

Large windows in the hull and a long panoramic roof with an electrically openable section on deck contribute to the elegant appearance and give an idea of how the sunlight floods the interior. Soft curves and smooth transitions of various fabrics, such as handmade leather to panels of fine wood, create a hand-flattering atmosphere, which is rarely seen in a series yacht.

The new Sealine F530 celebrated its world premier in Palma de Mallorca.

he Sealine F530, the largest yacht of the Sealine series with 16 metres in length, was officially presented at the Boat Show in Palma de Mallorca on April 28.

On three decks this yacht indulges its guests with elegant lines, true size and luxurious amenities.

Two floor levelled 3.90 by 1.70 metres panoramic windows in the salon create a phenomenal effect, which reminds of a modern loft overlooking the sea. A wide sidewalk offers a path to the sun lounge in the bow area, which gives you ample space to sunbath or to have dinner under the stars.

THE ART OF SAILING AND DESIGN The GS58 Performance is ready for launch.

T

he new GS58 Performance brings once again the worldwide design leaders Nauta Design and the international well-known naval architect Umberto Felci together under Cantiere del Pardo roof, to create without doubt an Italian masterpiece, where beauty and performance meet.

Cantiere del Pardo asked Nauta Design to design a boat that would recreate a super-yacht level of comfort and project quality on an 18-metre yacht. The result is the new Grand Soleil 58, a yacht that combines a wide and sporty transom area with a truly exceptional level of interior customization options. The most important feature of the Grand Soleil 58 compared to other yachts in its size range is its large and open aft area. The wide transom ensures easy manoeuvring with helms and winches kept well separate from the guest cockpit, and smooth movement through the water. The same aft area does double duty as an excellent and spacious place for relaxing and sunbathing while at anchor and gives the yacht the aggressive and sporty look that says Grand Soleil.

Careful study was devoted to the 58’s interiors, which can be chosen in a range of different layouts thanks to a modular planning system.

There are two different saloon options: galley forward in the salon or the more traditional galley port just beside the entrance; the owner’s cabin can feature a double bed placed centrally or to port. The Grand Soleil 58 is one of the few mid-segment yachts on the market today to offer this high a level of customisation of interiors layouts, an option usually reserved only for owners of larger custom yachts.

Knowing that customisation was a key feature of the 58, Cantiere del Pardo brought a 3D 1:1 scale mock up of the yacht’s central area to the latest Salone di Genova. Potential owners physically entered the spaces of their future yachts and chose solutions to suit their individual needs.

The idea was a success, so much that the first five yachts sold in this series all have different interior layouts. For example, the first Grand Soleil 58, scheduled to be launched in 2016, will have the main saloon with the galley port of the companionway and the owner’s bed port.

The interior layout options are combined with a range of finishing that include fabrics, colours and veneers from traditional teak to light coloured oak and a range of fabrics. The interior style follows the concept of the Grand Soleil 46 LC. The deck provides different solutions to satisfy various needs. It is possible to choose a self tacking jib or two side tracks, fixed main sheet point or electric traveller, upgraded winches, opt carbon bow sprit, full hard deck equipment for fast cruising or racing, two solutions for cockpit tables, flush Sprayhood when not in use, carbon or hydraulic gangway, tender garage and many more.

All solutions have been studied in order to have a performance boat with no compromises, keeping the weight under constant control using also new lighter composite materials for the furniture and flooring and GRP for the construction of the main bulkheads. In this way any owner can decide what suits him best.

The hull has been studied not only for sailing but also for comfort. The large stern provide a big tender garage with storage area, behind two wide sterns and high cabins which are not interrupted by the dinghy or strange cockpit forms. Both cabins can provide two separated beds or one king size bed. Each stern cabin has its own comfortable head. The VIP head is also used as a daily with a box shower and can also be transformed into a 4th guest cabin on request.

During the design process, the plans were carefully assessed so the maintenance process and the possibility to upgrade systems in the future would also be possible. The engine room can fit different sizes and suppliers so as for the generator. It is possible to install a water

maker, air-conditioning system, heating system, extra fuel and water tanks, black water in each cabin, TV, bow and stern thrusters and more.

Grand Soleil are represented in Malta by Yachting Partners Malta Limited and were one of the first dealerships to sell a Grand Soleil 58 who will be reaching our shores at the end of this year. The technical elements on board the GT5 are remarkable. One of the features that stands out is the twin rudder system. Due to the wider and flatter hull design, twin rudders are more efficient than a single rudder, providing exceptional control and reducing the tendency to broach. The yacht does not stall easily – its pitching moment is reduced and directional control is superb.

The keel has a very low centre of gravity for enhanced sail-carrying power arranged in a T-shaped geometry beneath a low wetted surface area fin. This provides for more righting moment for reduced displacement and drag.

The GT5’s chined hull helps with the yacht’s tracking ability upwind and clean off the wake, giving the yacht improved high speed and control downwind. When heeled ideally, the yacht reaches an optimum underwater hull shape with a small wetted surface for minimum drag. Chines also prevent broaching because it works as a long skeg. Matching the maximum beam with the optimum underwater hull shape leads to the design of a chined hull.

The chined hull also provides increased beam and internal volume, while optimising stability. A sophisticated hull shape (Humphreys Yacht Design) with more radius in underwater hull sections aft are better balanced with fuller forward sections to increase beam without increasing drag.

CALLS SICILY Sailing enthusiast Mark Vassallo circumnavigated Sicily together with his family.

T

he most popular summer destination for Malta’s boat community is the stretch of coast from Marina de Ragusa to Siracusa in Sicily. But for those who want to venture further, the Sicilian coastline can offer some stunning, lesspopulated areas. In August 2012, sailing enthusiast Mark Vassallo ventured on quite a unique trip, circumnavigating the island of Sicily together with his wife and two young children.

On board their 31-foot boat the trip started westbound to the South West coast (Licata then Sciacca) then onwards to Capo San Vito, Castellammare del Golfo and Mondello. At almost half way, they sailed to Cefalu and Capo d’Orlando and then further east to Milazzo and to round Messina for Taormina and Syracuse, finishing in Malta after having covered 500 miles in 18 days.

“The longest stretch is the crossing between Malta Sicily, which even the less experienced sailors can handle. Other than that it’s about comfortable coastal sailing with a nice stopping every 20 to 30 miles,” Vassallo said.

Licata, their first pit stop, is most popular for its churches, which are home to some interesting works of art, not to mention the quaint typically Sicilian tavernas. The next morning they took off early towards Sciacca, about 50 miles up the coast, where Scala dei Turchi made for great midday dip.

Historically a fishing port, Sciacca is most popular for its ceramics and thermal baths, but take note, the walk up to town is not for the faint hearted!

“The highlight of the trip was definitely San Vito Lo Capo, with its crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches just at the foot of quite an imposing landscape,” Vassallo says. “We spent a couple of days here, before moving on to Castellamare del Golfo and Mondello. Both are popular and charming for different reason – Mondello still looks like something out of a 1980s Italian comedy.”

A few days later, with a nice southerly breeze forecast, Vassallo sailed east towards Cefalu, a comfortable mid-stop between the West and East Sicilian corners. Popular mostly for its beach resorts, the old town square is well worth a visit.

Capo d’Orlando was the next stop, from where the beautiful Aeolian Islands, only 10 miles away, can be admired in full glory. Vassallo says that at the time, most of the entrance to the harbour was restricted by sandbanks and therefore can be a bit tricky. It would be best to get local guidance before entering.

From this point, the Vassallo family sailed back into familiar territory, stopping for a swim and onwards to the Straits of Messina, Taormina and Syracuse.

“There a couple of things you need to keep in mind,” Vassallo says. “Given the prevailing winds on the South West coast, it is best to starts travelling early in the morning. Fog is also common around Capo San Marco when the winds are light south and south-east. The passage of water between Marsala and Trapani (passing between Favignana and the mainland) needs constant attention due to a number of reefs and shallows.”

Before embarking on such a trip, you need to make sure to have a fully-functional boat and all the consumable spares for your engine, water and toilet pumps. Especially for those motorboat enthusiasts fuel prices at Cefalu and Capo San Vito tend to be on the higher side.

ark Turner, one of the most respected figures in professional sailing has been appointed Volvo Ocean Race CEO, stepping down after 23 years at the helm of global sports marketing company OC Sport.

he latest high-tech, high-secrecy design from British America’s Cup Challengers Land Rover BAR was launched at the team base in Portsmouth.

Turner, who competed in offshore sailing’s leading international event as a Whitbread Round-the-World sailor in 1989, and masterminded the Dongfeng Race Team project in the 2014-15 edition, will take up his new position in succession to Knut Frostad from June 7 this year.

Land Rover BAR is the first of the America’s Cup Challengers to launch a third test boat, T3. With just over a year until the America’s Cup qualifying races begin, the British team is keeping their cards close regarding the new design, which follows T2, the previous test platform launched in October last year.

“There probably isn’t any other post in sailing that could have attracted me today after taking OC Sport through so many different areas of the sport over the last two decades,” Turner said.

Land Rover BAR is the first of the challenging teams to unveil a third turbo design, having launched their second T2 model in October last year.

“It is a significant responsibility for me to take over the leadership from Knut, who has done such an excellent job of transforming the race in to the sport’s biggest and most commercially viable top-level event.

SCALING Up Taste the sea with Skipper’s exotic course.

Quick fish curry You need 1tbsp vegetable oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, chopped 1tbsp Madras curry paste 400g can tomato 200ml vegetable stock White fish fillets

Method Heat the oil in a deep pan and gently fry the onion and garlic until soft. Add the curry paste and stir-fry for two minutes. Tip in the tomatoes and stock.

Bring to a simmer and add the fish. Cook for five minutes.

Serve with rice or naan bread.

Thai-style steamed fish

You need 2 trout fillets Small knob of fresh root ginger, peeled and chopped 1 small red chilli, seeded and finely chopped Grated zest and juice of 1 lime 3 pak choi, quartered 2tbsp soy sauce

Method Place the fish side by side on a large square of foil and scatter the ginger, garlic, chilli and lime zest over them. Drizzle the lime juice and scatter the pieces of pak choi around the fish. Pour the soy sauce over the pak choi and seal the foil.

Steam for 15 minutes and serve with rice.
