RIDING THE WAVES OF ADVERSITY

The 2024 Rolex Middle Sea Race

Offshore racing in its purest form comes to life in the 2024 Rolex Middle Sea Race, where resilience, strategy, and teamwork are paramount. Highlighting the remarkable victories of Red Bandit and Scallywag 100, alongside the relentless determination of double-handed sailors, Skipper captures the essence of perseverance in one of yachting’s most demanding events.

Offshore racing, often hailed as sailing's most gruelling discipline demands resilience, strategy, and teamwork. The 45th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race showcased these qualities as the 112-strong fleet tackled 606 nautical miles (1,122 kilometres) of unpredictable conditions. Perseverance and adaptability were essential as the crews faced the vagaries of weather and the relentless challenges of this premier event. Since 2002, Rolex and the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) have collaborated to elevate the race, making it one of the world's foremost 600-nautical-mile contests. »

The 2024 edition delivered unforgettable narratives, particularly the triumphs of Red Bandit and Scallywag 100. These victories epitomised the spirit of overcoming adversity. Red Bandit, a German-flagged TP52, secured overall victory on handicap, thanks to a determined crew led by skipper Carl-Peter Forster. His team of two professionals and 11 young sailors, developed through a charitable pathway program, embodied the commitment and grit required for success. Forster reflected on their journey, saying, "It is a dream to win the Rolex Middle Sea Race. It's a bit unreal and will be for a while. When we started this project, the crew had little knowledge of offshore or bigboat sailing. Over the last three years, we've come a long way. A TP52 is a delicate machine, and handling it requires constant focus."

The crew's mettle was tested on a punishing first night at sea. A violent thunderstorm battered the fleet along the Sicilian coast, with Mount Etna's glow as an eerie backdrop. Navigator Joshua Weber noted, "This race demands a huge combined effort. Every segment and decision impacts the outcome. The team's ability to work together and push the boat to its limits was key to our success."

Meanwhile, in the monohull fleet's battle for line honours, two 100-foot Maxis, Scallywag 100 and Black Jack 100, engaged in a fierce contest. The decisive moment came when Scallywag 100's Spanish navigator, Juan Vila, made a bold tactical choice near Lampedusa, leveraging a cloud formation for better positioning. This calculated risk enabled Scallywag 100 to finish in two days, 21 hours, 33 minutes, and 29 seconds, claiming victory.

Seng Huang Lee, Scallywag 100's owner, and skipper David Witt were ecstatic, "This is one of the toughest races I've done in a

100-footer. It was a massive team effort. I am proud of our crew. Starting and finishing in Malta is a fantastic experience, and we'd love to do it again."

Despite narrowly missing line honours, Black Jack 100's skipper, Tristan Le Brun, praised his crew's relentless spirit, "At the end of the day, this is a team sport. We were a great team before, during, and after the race, even if we didn't achieve the result we wanted."

Success in offshore racing transcends trophies. For many, completing the course is a triumph in itself. Czech sailors Milan Koláček and Milan Tomek, sailing double-handed aboard the 36foot Marina 21, embodied this ethos. After facing exhaustion and equipment failure, they persevered to win their class, "The race was exhausting. At one point, we considered retiring. But we decided to continue, repaired our mainsail, and pushed forward. We don't like to give up."

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is a testament to human fortitude and teamwork. Over its 22-year partnership with Rolex, the event has evolved, drawing higher levels of competition and showcasing the indomitable spirit of offshore sailing. The 2024 edition reaffirmed its status as a premier challenge, celebrating the enduring allure of yachting and the resilience of those who dare to compete.

CROSSING OCEANS AND SAVING LIVES

The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) is a pinnacle event for sailors, combining the thrill of adventure with the challenges of a transatlantic voyage. For John De Giorgio, this year's rally aboard Cinderella di San Remo marked the culmination of years of preparation and a lifelong dream. But the journey wasn't just about crossing the Atlantic—it became a story of quick thinking and teamwork in an emergency.

Answering a Mayday call from the distressed Karolina Viking, John and his crew undertook a challenging rescue operation in rough seas. Their efforts not only saved five lives but highlighted the importance of preparation, modern technology, and the unwavering camaraderie of the sailing community.

John, participating in the ARC Atlantic Rally for Cruisers is a dream for many sailors. What inspired you to join this year's rally, and how have you prepared for the transatlantic crossing aboard Cinderella di San Remo?

Participating in the ARC has been a long-standing aspiration of mine, and this year, the timing was finally right to turn that dream into reality. The rally is iconic among sailors, offering a unique blend of challenge and camaraderie.

The couple who own the boat led much of the preparation for this journey. They ensured we met the rigorous safety standards set by the World Cruising Club while also addressing the wear and tear that a transatlantic crossing inevitably brings. Every detail, from equipment checks

to provisioning, had to be meticulously planned.

Since our crew only met together online and individually with the owners for the first time a few months before the start, we focused on building rapport and coordinating logistics. Regular Zoom meetings helped us align on essentials like provisioning, medical preparedness, onboard roles, and safety measures.

On a personal level, I upgraded my safety gear and pursued training to enhance my skills, culminating in certification as an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore through Prosailing. Despite my 50+ years of sailing experience, I believe in constantly learning and preparing for the unexpected.

In Las Palmas, we had an intense week

of final preparations—fixing minor issues, organising provisions, and ensuring the boat was in top condition. This collective effort bonded us as a team before setting sail.

Your quick response to the Mayday call and subsequent rescue of the five crew members aboard Karolina Viking was remarkable. Could you describe what went through your mind when you first heard the call and how you and your team managed the operation?

I had just come off my watch at 03:00 when the Mayday call from Karolina Viking came in over the VHF. The distress was palpable, but the signal was unclear, particularly the coordinates. Recognising the urgency, we immediately acknowledged the call to reassure them they had been heard.

We quickly woke the skipper and crew to assess the situation. We knew we were likely to be the closest vessel based on our earlier AIS observations. Coordinating with ARC Emergency staff and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres in Martinique and Cabo Verde confirmed this. With no commercial vessels nearby, the responsibility fell to us.

Communication was critical. Once we established contact with Karolina Viking via WhatsApp, we gained a clearer picture of their situation, including video evidence of their damage, precise location, and needs. Initially, at approximately 25 nautical miles behind us, we reset our course, reconfigured the four sails we were flying, and began heading back toward them.

The conditions were challenging—30-knot headwinds and rough seas – and, since they were travelling towards Cabo Verde at 5 knots, our journey took 10 hours. We maintained constant communication, refining our rescue plan as we approached. While there is much training and information available on how to get into a life raft, there is not much on picking people

up from one up. We hatched a plan. Once we arrived on-site, we deployed a 100-meter floating line with a fender. The distressed crew got into their life raft with their grab bags and cut off from the catamaran. This was a heart-wrenching moment. We then circled their life raft with our floating line, which, after three attempts, they could grab hold of to facilitate a safe transfer from their life raft to our deck. This method proved effective, even in the turbulent seas.

You mentioned using VHF, WhatsApp, and Starlink tools during the rescue operation. How critical was this technology in coordinating the

The ARC is more than a rally; it's a test of resilience and a community celebration.

rescue, and do you think modern communication tools are transforming safety at sea?

Modern communication tools like Starlink and WhatsApp were game-changers during the rescue. The initial Mayday via VHF was unclear, but WhatsApp allowed us to exchange precise coordinates, view videos of their damage, and maintain consistent communication throughout the ordeal.

Starlink, in particular, has revolutionised safety and community-building at sea. Preliminary data suggests that 80% of ARC boats had Starlink aboard, enabling highspeed internet access. This connectivity supported safety operations and vibrant community chats among participants, with boats sharing technical advice, medical guidance, and even morale-boosting messages.

Given its impact, I strongly advise against undertaking an event like the ARC without Starlink. It's a vital tool that enhances »

The ARC route

safety, coordination, and the overall experience.

What were the most significant challenges you faced during this incident regarding the conditions and the logistics of accommodating additional crew on Cinderella di San Remo? Were there any lessons learned that you'd share with fellow sailors?

The challenges were multifaceted, from battling rough seas during the rescue to accommodating an additional five people aboard for the 11-day journey to Saint Lucia. Thankfully, Cinderella di San Remo was well-suited to the task. As a 22-meter Jongert weighing 63 tonnes, she's built for stability and comfort in adverse conditions. The pilothouse provided excellent protection for the crew, and her robust water and fuel reserves—2,100 litres of water, 2,000 litres of diesel, and a watermaker capable of producing 200 litres per hour—ensured we were well-prepared. We also had plenty of food aboard.

While the boat had six berths, we improvised additional sleeping arrangements in the saloon, pilothouse, and cockpit on dry nights. Everyone adapted quickly; having extra hands on deck and in the galley was a bonus.

The floating line method during the rescue was a simple yet effective strategy I'll always use in emergencies.

One crucial lesson was the effectiveness of the floating line during the rescue. It's a simple yet invaluable method I'll use in future emergencies.

You've undoubtedly had many experiences throughout your sailing career. How does this rescue operation compare to other moments you've had at sea? Has it changed your perspective on the responsibilities of sailors toward one another?

This rescue was unlike anything I've experienced in my 50+ years of sailing. It was an emotional journey, not only because of the gravity of the situation but also because of the bonds we formed with the rescued crew. Their gratitude and positive attitude enriched our experience, turning a potential tragedy into a testament to the solidarity of the sailing community.

While the experience reaffirmed rather than changed my perspective, it underscored the deep sense of duty sailors share. Responding to a Mayday is instinctive, but this operation highlighted the importance of creativity and preparation, like using the floating line, in achieving a successful outcome.

How did your crews adjust after such an intense experience?

The adjustment was seamless, thanks to the resilience and gratitude of both crews. Our immediate priority was their wellbeing—providing meals and rest – they had not slept or eaten a proper meal for 36 hours and a few days to recover before integrating them into our watch cycle. Their willingness to help and adapt made the transition smooth. They were lovely people.

The shared experience enhanced our experience and created a bond that I believe will last well beyond this rally.

We are already discussing future events, such as the May Day weekend RMYC Marzamemi race…

AGAINST ALL ODDS

The Jarhead Women's Team's epic maiden race

The Jarhead Women's Team's first Rolex Middle Sea Race was a baptism of fire.

Faced with severe weather and sleepless nights, they drew on their training, trust, and determination to complete the gruelling course—a journey they will never forget.

How did completing your first-ever Rolex Middle Sea Race as the Jarhead Women's Team feel? What emotions stood out as you crossed the finish line, and how do you reflect on this milestone?

Gary: Completing my first RMSR as a skipper was a massive accomplishment for me, and an even more significant accomplishment was achieving the result we achieved. Crossing the finish line was a mix of relief and a great sense of achievement.

Bob: As the skipper has always told us in preparation for the race, "Even starting the race is a huge achievement!". With all the preparations leading up to the race to get the boat (and ourselves) ready and the traditionally chaotic start- which saw over 100 boats fight for the best head start at the mouth of the harbour. One can imagine the sense of achievement we felt when we managed to start the race and finish in good time while fighting for a spot in the upper end of our category.

Christina: Finishing the Rolex Middle Sea Race with the Jarhead Women's Team was epic—a bucket list achievement and

the challenge of a lifetime. Starting with 66 knots of wind on Day 1 was next-level madness! Crossing the finish line was a mix of relief, disbelief, and pure joy. After battling horrendous conditions for five and a half days, we passed the Tigné Point flag, hearing that mighty finish horn. It was momentous—every fear and ounce of exhaustion was worth it.

Can you describe the moment severe weather struck during the race? How did the team react, and what immediate actions were taken to ensure safety and maintain vessel control?

Gary: When I saw the storm coming, we put down the kite to prepare for when it hit. As soon as it hit, we put down all our canvas and waited it out. I instructed the crew to stay in the cockpit, where it was safe to avoid any accidents.

Emma: It was an intense and memorable event when a massive storm swarmed the race. We were surrounded by dark clouds and waterspouts. The wind, starting from around 12 knots, went up to 20-24 knots, and in a matter of seconds, it shot up to 65 knots. Thankfully, the skipper had anticipated the sudden wind increase

beforehand, and we managed to get down the headsail immediately. The rain battered us, our vision deteriorated, and the storm's noise overpowered everything. The crew snapped into action immediately. Lifejackets were checked and secured, and everyone clipped onto the safety lines for stability. Everyone sat in the cockpit, and I kept the wheel turned to one side and waited for the storm to pass.

Communication was key—despite the chaos, the crew remained calm and focused. We worked as a team, each person playing their role to keep the boat under control and everyone safe. A mix of adrenaline, trust, and experience got us through. When the storm finally eased, we were drenched, exhausted, but deeply proud of how we'd handled it together. It was a true test of teamwork and seamanship.

Pippa: From my perspective, I had just been woken up during my rest time and told to get on deck and be prepared for the storm. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, and yes, I was scared. But I had my team by my side the whole time, ensuring me that all would be fine, and it was. I am incredibly grateful for their constant support and encouragement on and off the water.

Christina: A few hours into Day 1, we spotted four or five waterspouts about 2–3 miles away. Moments later, the skies turned white, and massive gusts pinned the boat on her side. Gary and Keith quickly dropped the sails while Emma took the helm. The rest of us huddled in the cockpit, supporting each other as we braced for the epic storm. Those 10 minutes, facing 66-knot gusts on

a 36-foot boat, felt like an eternity! It was a humbling experience I'll never forget.

How did the extreme conditions affect team morale and communication? Were there pivotal moments where the team's cohesion was tested, and how did you navigate those challenges?

Pippa: I will say that at first, the team must have felt concerned for the safety

of the boat and all on board, but I must say that everything was handled well and professionally. Morale was pretty high most of the time, and in pivotal moments, we remained focused and determined to do well.

Bob: I can't say there weren't times we didn't test each other's patience, but one »

would expect that with 8 very different people living on a small vessel for 6 days. However, we managed to manoeuvre ourselves into a routine that saw past our disagreements and worked around each individual's fatigue to pull through for the others when needed.

Chiara: Overall, the team worked well under pressure and in harsh conditions. There was one specific moment that really tested the team and me. It was dark and very windy, rounding the west coast of Sicily. We went to do an outside jib, and the lazy got stuck. The spinnaker had a mind of its own, and the boat went round in circles, losing our bearings. The crew on shift were in fight or flight mode, under the explicit instructions of the skipper, on what to do next. It was hands down the scariest moment of the race, but it was worth it; I woke up for my next shift with us first!

Did the harsh weather expose any weaknesses in your equipment or preparation? In hindsight, is there anything you would have done differently regarding gear selection or training to handle such conditions better?

Gary: The harsh weather broke a car off the main and a batten in the jib top, but nothing that couldn't be fixed on the go or essential for the race.

Keith: The harsh weather put our equipment and preparation to the test, but in many ways, it highlighted how crucial our readiness was. The inspections carried out by the RMYC safety officers were key in identifying areas for improvement, and their feedback played a significant role in our ability to finish the race. On the first day, when we encountered that incredible 66-knot weather front, we used our storm headsail and fully reefed mainsail to

Crossing the finish line was a mix of relief, disbelief, and pure joy.
– Christina Medici

navigate through it—both of which must be onboard to compete. These sails and our preparation were critical in keeping us safe.

Towards the end of the race, we noticed that the housing for the bowsprit/ extendable spinnaker pole had cracked, and the boat started taking on a significant amount of water as we were hard over an upwind tack for over 24 hours. This could have been a major issue, but thanks to the safety officer's advice, we had replaced our underpowered handheld bilge pump with a higher-capacity one before the race. We had also packed extra cable, which allowed us to operate the pump from any location on the boat. Without those changes, we would have likely been forced to retire.

This experience reaffirmed the importance of thorough preparation and the role of The Foundation in ensuring that we could meet these challenges head-on. The Foundation leaves no stone unturned in terms of boat and team preparations. Before the race, both boats are serviced on the hard at a

very high cost. Triple-checking our gear, understanding why each piece of equipment was on board, and having the right tools for the job allowed us to handle extreme conditions, finish safely, and even place well.

Yachting is an incredibly demanding and expensive sport, and none of this would have been possible without the support of The Foundation and our sponsors, namely Camilleri Marine, MMH Malta Ltd, and Pharma.mt. Their backing ensured we were fully equipped and prepared to overcome every challenge the race threw at us.

What were the most significant lessons from competing in unpredictable and harsh conditions? How do you apply these insights to future races or training sessions?

Bob: The biggest takeaway was the value of clear communication. It is often challenging to communicate in the best conditions on a boat, which was made harder with the loud flapping sails, the rush of the water and the pouring rain, especially when quick decisions were necessary to keep the boat and crew safe. In addition, given that forecasts were rarely even close to being accurate, learning to understand the air and sea conditions was a handy skill to anticipate our next moves. This is definitely something I now pay more attention to during training and the races following.

Emma: Competing in the unpredictable and harsh conditions of the Rolex Middle Sea Race taught me invaluable lessons about preparation, teamwork, and adaptability. The storm reinforced the importance of being ready for the worst, from doublechecking equipment to having clear emergency protocols. It also highlighted how vital clear and calm communication is, especially under pressure, as it became

our lifeline during the chaos. Adaptability proved to be a superpower, with rapidly changing conditions requiring quick decisions and trust in instincts. Most importantly, the experience underscored that resilience is built as a team—no one faces a storm alone.

Moving forward, I plan to enhance pre-race drills, simulate high-pressure scenarios during training, and integrate more varied challenges to build confidence and flexibility. I'll also prioritize team building to strengthen trust and camaraderie, ensuring we're even more prepared for future races. This race was a humbling reminder of the ocean's power and our capacity to rise to the occasion together.

Chiara: The race was a mix of emotions from start to end – I finished the race on a high and was overwhelmed, especially when I saw my family. The MSR taught me the importance of discipline, teamwork and being prepared, which applies to daily life on land.

The race tested physical endurance and mental fortitude. How did you and your teammates manage fatigue and stress

during the most challenging parts of the race? Were there specific strategies or routines that proved effective?

Pippa: We had fixed shift patterns of three hours on and three hours off, which I felt worked well for our team. As I said, our team was extremely supportive of one another throughout the entire race. This really helped me, as there were some moments when I was not feeling my best and demotivated. During the most challenging parts of the race, we pushed as much as we could and made the best of the situations we faced.

Emma: The Rolex Middle Sea Race was as much a test of mental resilience as physical endurance. Managing fatigue and stress during the most challenging moments required preparation, discipline, and teamwork. We relied heavily on a wellorganized watch system, ensuring everyone had time to rest while maintaining a functional crew on deck. Short but quality sleep breaks were crucial to staying alert, and we prioritized hydration and regular snacks to keep energy levels up, even in rough conditions. Communication played a significant role in managing stress—

checking in with one another, sharing updates, and offering encouragement helped keep spirits high. Humour and lighthearted moments, even in tough times, were surprisingly effective in diffusing tension. Everyone had their role, and trust in each other's capabilities gave us the confidence to focus on our tasks without worrying. Physical and mental preparation before the race also made a difference. Practising under simulated stressful conditions during the training helped us stay composed when things got tough. Ultimately, the combination of structure, mutual support, and mental grit kept us pushing forward, even when the race seemed relentless.

Christina: There were moments when we came face-to-face with the reality of how dangerous this race was, and it made me realize just how strong and capable my team truly is. The three-hour on-and-off shifts were brutal but essential to keep us functioning. They gave us just enough structure to hang on in the chaos. For the first time, I completely put my life in the hands of others, and that was both terrifying and humbling! It was insane, but it was also an honour to sail alongside such incredible teammates.

Chiara: Each team member looked out for one another. The intention was to have shifts; however, as we progressed in the race, illnesses, fatigue, and stress came into play. Members would fill in for others at specific points, and roles were reversed if needed.

← The Team left to right (top): Christina Medici, trimmer/pit; Emma Borg, co-helm/pit; Clara Farrugia, trimmer/pit; Gary Mercieca, skipper; Pippa Bartolo Parnis, bow/mast; Keith Diplock, co-skipper and navigator; Roberta Farrugia, trimmer/pit; (bottom): Chiara Scerri Herrera, bow/mast.

ECO-LUXURY ON THE WAVES

The rise of hybrid yachts

Sunreef 80 Eco

Imagine you're cutting across the open sea, the horizon stretching endlessly before you, and all you can hear is the gentle whisper of waves. No engine drone, no harmful emissions—just you, your yacht, and a profound connection with the ocean. This isn't a dream. It's the promise of hybrid yachts: a transformative leap forward in the yachting industry, marrying cutting-edge technology with environmental responsibility.

As climate challenges intensify, the yachting world finds itself at a crossroads. The allure of pristine waters and thriving marine ecosystems is under threat, and the global community of sailors and yacht builders must act. Hybrid yachts are not just a solution—they symbolise the industry's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and preserving what makes the sea so captivating.

What exactly are hybrid yachts?

At their core, hybrid yachts represent the synergy between traditional and modern propulsion systems. These vessels integrate a diesel engine with an electric motor, creating a versatile propulsion system that adapts to varying needs.

Diesel propulsion provides the power needed for long-distance travel and higher speeds. This traditional method also serves as a generator to recharge the batteries during cruising. Electric propulsion offers silent, emission-free cruising at lower speeds, which is ideal for eco-sensitive areas or marinas. Advanced battery technology ensures hours of uninterrupted operation, even during overnight voyages.

The Greenline 40 Hybrid epitomises this dual system. It seamlessly switches between diesel and electric modes, »

allowing for efficient long-range cruising and quiet, zeroemission operation when desired.

Why are hybrid yachts the future of boating?

Environmental leadership

The marine industry is under increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact. Hybrid yachts address key concerns by cutting emissions, reducing fuel consumption, and minimising noise pollution—key factors in protecting marine biodiversity.

The Sunreef 80 Eco is a luxury sailing catamaran that integrates solar panels into its structure. It harnesses solar energy to power its electric engines and onboard amenities, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

Technological advancements

Innovations such as lithium-ion batteries, advanced energy management systems, and solar panel integration have propelled hybrid yachts to the forefront of marine technology. Many models now incorporate regenerative energy solutions, harnessing power from the yacht's movement to recharge batteries.

The Ferretti 780 Hybrid incorporates state-of-the-art battery systems and energy management, allowing for regenerative braking and energy recovery during operation.

Regulatory compliance

With stricter environmental regulations on the horizon, particularly in the EU and the U.S., hybrid yachts are wellpositioned to meet and exceed standards. Owners can cruise in emission-controlled zones without restrictions, future-proofing their investment.

The Arcadia Sherpa XL hybrid yacht meets stringent environmental standards, enabling owners to navigate protected marine areas off-limits to less eco-friendly vessels.

A closer look at the benefits

Lower emissions

Hybrid systems slash greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals and marine conservation efforts.

The Silent 55 is a solar-powered yacht that operates completely emission-free. Its solar-electric drivetrain eliminates the need for fossil fuels during daylight cruising.

Cost efficiency

Rising fuel costs have made energy-efficient solutions more attractive. Hybrid yachts reduce fuel dependency and lower maintenance expenses thanks to their simplified electric systems. Owners of the Greenline 48 Fly report significant savings on fuel and maintenance due to its efficient hybrid system and solar panel supplementation.

Comfort and luxury

Silent cruising in electric mode enhances the onboard experience, eliminating vibrations and engine noise. This also creates a more enjoyable environment for marine life, which is increasingly impacted by noise pollution.

The Lagoon Seventy 8 hybrid yacht offers unparalleled luxury while operating silently in electric mode, providing guests a peaceful and comfortable journey.

Extended range

By alternating between propulsion systems, hybrid yachts can explore remote destinations with fewer stops for refuelling. Solar panels and other renewable energy integrations can further extend operational capacity.

The Arksen 85 is an explorer vessel designed for long-range expeditions. It uses hybrid propulsion and renewable energy sources to maximise range and autonomy.

Performance without compromise

One common misconception is that hybrid yachts trade speed for sustainability. In reality, modern hybrid designs rival traditional yachts in performance. Leading shipyards have proven that eco-conscious sailing can deliver thrilling speeds and exceptional handling.

Lagoon Seventy 8

The Azimut Seadeck 6, part of Azimut's groundbreaking hybrid Seadeck Series, combines diesel engines with electric motors for reduced emissions and quiet cruising. This 17-meter yacht offers the innovative "Fun Island" design, transforming the cockpit into an open-air lounge for an enhanced connection with the sea. Its hybrid propulsion system allows for silent, emissionfree cruising in eco-sensitive areas, making it a perfect blend of luxury, performance, and sustainability.

The investment angle: Are hybrid yachts worth it?

For savvy yacht enthusiasts, hybrid yachts represent more than an eco-friendly choice—they're a sound investment. With global demand for sustainable technologies rising, hybrid yachts maintain substantial resale value. Additionally, owners benefit from incentives like reduced port fees in some eco-certified marinas and potential subsidies for adopting green technologies.

The Sanlorenzo SL106 Hybrid retains its value due to its combination of luxury, performance, and eco-friendly features, making it an attractive option on the resale market.

Challenges and opportunities

While hybrid yachts are a significant step forward, challenges remain. Though advancing rapidly, battery technology still faces energy density and cost limitations. Integrating renewable energy sources like wind turbines and hydrogen fuel cells is on the horizon but requires further development. The conceptual Aqua yacht by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design aims to use liquid hydrogen fuel cells, representing the next frontier in zeroemission yachting.

However, the opportunities far outweigh the hurdles. Shipyards collaborate with tech innovators to refine hybrid systems,

while yacht owners are becoming ambassadors for sustainable boating. Together, they're setting a precedent for the entire industry.

What's next for hybrid yachts?

The evolution of hybrid yachts is far from over. Emerging trends point to fully autonomous energy management systems, AIdriven navigation for fuel optimisation, and the adoption of modular hybrid systems that can be retrofitted onto existing vessels. These advancements will further democratise access to sustainable yachting.

The Feadship's Project Galactica incorporates AI and advanced automation for optimal energy use, hinting at the future direction of hybrid yacht technology.

Moreover, as awareness grows, we can expect a ripple effect. The principles behind hybrid yachts—efficiency, sustainability, and innovation—are already influencing broader marine industries, from commercial shipping to recreational boating.

A sea change in yachting

Hybrid yachts are more than a technological achievement— they're a vision for the future of the seas. They embody the possibility of enjoying the beauty and freedom of yachting while actively protecting the oceans that inspire us. The choice is clear for those seeking to make a meaningful impact without sacrificing luxury or performance.

Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a newcomer to the yachting world, consider the hybrid route. It's not just a choice for today— it's an investment in tomorrow.

Key VAT considerations on the concept of Advance Provisioning Allowance

VAT complexities in yacht chartering often center on the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA).

Christabel Gatt, Chief Operating Officer at Zampa Partners, unpacks the EU VAT implications of APA payments, referencing pivotal CJEU cases like BUPA and Bacino and explores VAT applicability, input recovery rights, and exemptions, offering clarity for charter operators and enthusiasts.

“Payments on account of supplies of goods or services that have not yet been clearly identified cannot be subject to VAT.”

This concept is supported by the decision of the European Court of Justice in the BUPA

Hospitals Ltd and Goldsborough Developments Ltd v Commissioners of Customs & Excise Case (C419/02) (“BUPA Case”). In this case, the CJEU ruled that prepayments of the kind at issue in the BUPA Case, whereby lump sums are paid for goods referred to in general terms in a list which may be altered at

The right to recover input VAT on costs paid using the APA is a key fundamental factor under the EU VAT legislation...

any time by agreement between the buyer and the seller and from which the buyer may select articles, based on an agreement which he may unilaterally resile from at any time, thereupon recovering the unused balance of the prepayments, is not considered to be a payment on account.

The above ruling may be relevant to advance provisioning allowance (“APA”) in yacht chartering. To begin with, provisioning is a key part of a yacht charter experience and is often facilitated through the APA. The APA refers to a financial arrangement between the yacht owner or operator and the charterer, where a prepayment is made for procuring supplies - such as food, beverages, fuel, port fees and other operating expenses, the so-called variable expenses - required for a specific voyage. Furthermore, the APA is generally managed by the yacht’s captain during the journey and keeps records of all expenditures relating to these variables. Any unutilised APA funds are typically refunded to the charterer. Likewise, any excess spending may need to be settled by the charterer at the end of the voyage.

The question of VAT applicability on the APA itself has been shaped via EU VAT law and rulings of the CJEU, notably the BUPA Case referred to above.

As a result, the APA shall be deemed a payment on account, and for the tax to become chargeable when the customer has made a payment on account, all the relevant information concerning the chargeable event, namely the future delivery or future performance, must already be known. Therefore, when a payment on account is made, the goods or services must be precisely identified. It follows that payments on account of supplies of goods or services that have not yet been clearly identified cannot be subject to VAT.

Regarding the right to recover input VAT on costs paid using the APA - this right is a key fundamental

factor under the EU VAT legislation whereby it provides for VAT neutrality for taxable persons about supplies of goods and services bought that are used or intended to be used in the course of their economic activity insofar as the input VAT incurred as a result thereof is attributable to taxable or exempt (with credit) supplies made or intended to be made - insofar as the costs incurred are recharged to the charterer separately at the end of the voyage, then, the yacht owner or operator may be in a position to claim back any input VAT incurred. In this case, the captain must communicate the VAT identification number to the suppliers for the supplies purchased using the APA funds.

Furthermore, costs such as those referred to above, namely provisioning costs incurred by the operator or owner of a vessel “used for navigation on the high seas and carrying passengers for reward or used for the purposes of commercial… activities,” may fall within the remit of the VAT exemption (with credit), which is governed by Article 148 of Council Directive 2006/112/EC (the “VAT Directive”).

However, it is essential to note that such a VAT exemption is not extended to recharge these costs when the charterer is a natural person, as established by the CJEU in the ‘Bacino Case’ (C116/10). In general, whilst subscribing to the above, a prudent approach should always be considered when the right of recovery is exercised on these costs.

It should be appreciated that different Member States may hold different interpretations on whether such a right may be exercised on APA costs. Therefore, the practical application of this right may also differ across jurisdictions.

This forward-thinking modularity means the XR 41 can seamlessly transition between racing and cruising, offering unparalleled value to owners who refuse to choose between speed and comfort.

Built to last

X-Yachts' Danish craftsmanship is legendary, and the XR 41 is no exception. Utilising advanced materials and precision engineering, the XR 41 is built

for longevity, making it an investment in performance and durability. Unlike many race boats that depreciate after a few seasons, the XR 41 is designed for years of competitive and recreational sailing.

A return to racing excellence

Set to premiere at Boot Düsseldorf in January 2025, the XR 41 embodies a perfect blend of performance, innovation, and adaptability. Whether competing in ORC regattas or leisurely exploring open waters, the XR 41 offers an experience tailored to every sailor's ambition. The XR 41 is more than a yacht—it's a statement of X-Yachts' enduring commitment to excellence, versatility, and the future of sailing.

A home at sea—

EXPLORING THE LAGOON 60

The Lagoon 60 catamaran, introduced in 2024, seamlessly blends luxury, performance, and innovative design, positioning itself between the Lagoon 55 and the SIXTY 5 models. This vessel caters to discerning sailors seeking both comfort and functionality.

Design and layout

The Lagoon 60's design emphasises open, fluid spaces that foster a strong connection with the sea. The expansive aft cockpit features fold-down terraces, or "wings," extending the living area and providing direct water access, enhancing the onboard experience.

The flybridge offers panoramic views and ample seating, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and social gatherings.

Inside, the saloon is bathed in natural light thanks to large vertical windows. The layout is adaptable, with options for

a galley-up or galley-down configuration, accommodating either four or five cabins. This flexibility allows owners to tailor the interior, whether prioritising communal space or additional private cabins, to their preferences.

Performance

Equipped with a powerful sail plan, including a square-top mainsail and overlapping genoa, the Lagoon 60 is designed for impressive sailing

performance. The rig is positioned further forward, a design choice that enhances flexibility and efficiency under sail.

Despite its substantial displacement of approximately 32,000 kg, the yacht maintains stability and speed, offering a comfortable ride even in varying sea conditions.

Lodgings

The master suite is a standout feature, boasting a walk-around bed facing expansive hull windows that offer breathtaking ocean views. Natural light floods the space, highlighting luxurious finishes and ample storage. An en-suite bathroom with a rain shower adds to the opulence. The master cabin provides private access to the aft cockpit, allowing for seamless transitions between indoor comfort and outdoor leisure.

Guest cabins are equally well-appointed, each with en-suite facilities and thoughtfully designed layouts to maximise comfort and privacy. The forward cockpit, accessible directly from the saloon, offers a serene space for relaxation, further enhancing the yacht's appeal for socialising and unwinding.

The Lagoon 60 sets a new standard in the 60-foot cruising catamaran category, combining innovative design, luxurious accommodations, and commendable sailing performance. Its spacious living areas, both indoors and out, make it an ideal choice for those seeking a harmonious blend of comfort and adventure on the open seas.
