EDITOR’S NOTE Is there anything more beautiful than the wind billowing in a full sail, with the water speeding by with a constant onomatopoeia of rushing water? Or pushing the throttle forward and feeling the sea spray in your face? If you haven't experienced this feeling, then there might be something more beautiful in life. But if you have had a taste of the boating life, then you're hooked. And after a harsh and windy season, now is the time of year that you're been looking forward to. Sailors have taken down their boats and the first inaugural races have been held. The marinas are a busy hive of activity. That's why they call it the beautiful season. In this issue of Skipper, we celebrate the start of the boating season. Thomas Meachen has been windsurfing since he was just 10 years old. In recent years, he tried kitesurfing and, in his words, got hooked. Nowadays, he dedicates his spare time to windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and wakeboarding. And we get to enjoy his spectacular catapults, gybes and shifts thanks to the fact that, apart from his standard equipment, Meachen also takes a camera on board. The inaugural RC44 Valletta Cup, an initiative undertaken by Yachting Events Limited, brought together some of the world's top sailing greats for a spectacular race in Maltese waters. Apart from local racing, in this issue of Skipper we cover some spectacular foreign races. The third edition of the Barcelona World Race was an extreme sporting challenge that put human limits to the test. In the end, it was Bernard Stamm and Jean Le Cam who triumphed. The fifth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race couldn't have been more exciting. After three weeks, any of the leading four boats could have claimed victory in Itajaí. Close to the finish line, it was a climax of tight racing and lead changes until Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing grabbed glory. In this issue of Skipper, we also review some exciting new boat models and interview Darren Abdilla, who won the BOV Malta National International One Metre Championship organised by the Malta Model Boats Association. WELCOME Sailing is as old as mankind. As a nation of sailors whose history was built on our geographic position at the crossroads of trade, war and peace, we should know that. And yet, despite the long history, that doesn't mean that sailing and boating don't enjoy a sense of innovation. New boat models continue to expand our horizons with excellent design, more advanced technology and an onboard lifestyle that keeps getting more aspirational and sophisticated. Races are also getting more adventurous and the competition grows fiercer, in a good way of course. In this issue of Skipper, for instance, we cover the Volvo Ocean Race, Barcelona World Race, and Clipper Round the World Race. These are all giant events which attract the top sailors from all around the world, all thirsty for adventure on the high seas.

Locally, we also enjoyed the inaugural RC44 Valletta Cup. The Grand Harbour is always a beautiful setting for any event and for the RC44 Valletta Cup, it provided the historical and dramatic backdrop to a thrilling season opener. There is also innovation in the way we approach sailing and watersports. Here, technology plays a huge role. Gone are the days when spectators would lose sight of the competitors once these sailed off beyond the horizon - nowadays, we can follow them on our tablets and smartphones. Technology also makes the sport more thrilling. In this issue of Skipper, we interview Thomas Meachen who, by virtue of taking a camera on board with him, allows us to share the excitement that kitesurfing - and the sea in general - has to offer.

When did you first take up kitesurfing? I started practising the sport about five years ago. What or who inspired you to take up this sport? I have been windsurfing since I was 10 years old. Kitesurfing was always something that I wanted to try so I finally did it and I was hooked. Apart from kitesurfing, I also go surfing and wakeboarding. All four watersports - windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and wakeboarding - go well together and I practise all of them. How much time do you dedicate to kitesurfing? It all depends on the weather. I windsurf on windy days and surf on days when the wind dies

down and if there is still some swell coming in. I wakeboard on summer days when the water is flat. In total, I would say that in winter, I dedicate an average of two afternoons every week to watersports. What equipment do you need to practise kitesurfing? You need a board, kite with bar and lines, wetsuit and harness. On extreme days I use an impact vest and a helmet. Board and kite sizes vary depending on the strength of the wind on the day. Personally, I have two kite boards, three kites, two bars and safety equipment. How physically fit do you need to be? You don't have to be fit. However, when I

weighed 75kg, I used to perform better than when I weighed 85kg. That means that weight does make a difference. The fitter you are, the better you perform. Which are the best locations in Malta to kitesurf? It all depends on the wind. When the wind is blowing in South East, East and North East directions, the best locations are Mellieha and St Thomas Bay. When the wind is blowing North West I go to Gnejna, while in West and North West winds, it's either Ghajn Tuffieha or Riviera.

Golden Bay is perfect for South West wind and Armier for North wind. In West or North West, the best option is White Tower while when the wind is blowing South, I head to Marsaxlokk. I also kitesurf in Ramla l-Hamra in North West and North wind. I usually kitesurf in onshore conditions. The best conditions would be sideshore - however, this is not possible in Malta due to small bays, gusty wind and for safety reasons.

Have you kitesurfed abroad? Yes. I have kitesurfed in Pozzallo and Marsala in Sicily, Paros in Greece and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. What advice would you give someone who is interested in taking up kitesurfing? Don't think twice - just go for it. It can be a dangerous sport so be cautious and take a few lessons from a qualified instructor. Attaching a camera to your equipment: what first gave you the idea and what does it add to your experience? I always liked the idea of having a camera on board. My first camera was an Olympus waterproof one but it was impossible to attach to equipment. When the Gopro came out, it solved that issue and I just had to have one. You cannot really look at the footage and learn from your mistakes. However, you can get a lot of cool shots and videos from different angles and I like to have memories of the good days.

he world's largest, most diverse fleet of offshore racing yachts will set sail from the Solent on August 16 in the Royal Ocean Racing Club's biennial Rolex Fastnet Race. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Royal Ocean Racing Club and with it a record-sized fleet with as many as 350 boats is expected to take part. The event is one of the most popular in sailing: the original limit of 300 boats racing for the overall handicap prize under IRC was increased to 340 in 2013 due to the increased demand. This is more than twice as many places as the next most popular of other 600 mile races held elsewhere in the world and still, when registration opened in January, all 340 places were filled within just 24 minutes. In addition to this group is the non-IRC fleet, including many top grand prix race boat classes such as giant G-Class multihulls and MOD70s, the IMOCA 60s, that compete in the Vendee Globe singlehanded non-stop round the world race, and the Class 40s. As always, one of the most attractive elements of the Rolex Fastnet Race is its

At the other end are the Corinthian entries, where individual crew will be embarking on what for them will be their own personal Everest: the culmination of a season's training that will have included at least 300 miles of offshore racing (the mandatory minimum requirement to qualify for Rolex Fastnet Race entry). this boat covered 908.2 miles a day at an average speed of 37.84 knots and has been first home in the last two Rolex Fastnet Races. However nipping at her heels will be the three MOD70 trimarans including MusandamOman Sail, skippered by Sidney Gavignet. This boat last year sailed an exceptional Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, setting not only a race record time, but also becoming the outright record holder for the Round Britain and Ireland course. “I am looking forward to this race,” said Gavignet of the Rolex Fastnet. “It is the big race of our season, so we take it seriously. It has such an impressive line-up. Races like the Fastnet are very important for sailing because it is a classic and you know that it will always be there every two years.” Once again Musandam-Oman Sail will be using the event in its continued programme of training up Omani sailors and three will be competing on board alongside Gavignet and round the world sailor Damian Foxall. At the Corinthian end of the fleet, charter and sailing school entries are swelling in number.

This year the demand has been huge with places selling out in 24 minutes and a waiting list of over 80 boats. The challenge for many is completing what can be a very tough adventure, but also its attraction for the experienced offshore racer is that they can compete with the top professionally raced yachts and have a realistic chance of winning. In 2013 the race was won by a very experienced father and son team sailing two handed which shows that anyone has a chance of winning the most prestigious race in the world calendar.”

The RC44 Valletta Cup kicked off in Malta's Grand Harbour with a day of match racing in one of sailing's most spectacular settings: our centuries-old capital city surrounded by bastions protecting the confines of our bustling natural deep water harbour. Racing started for the 11 RC44s with a south easterly wind enabling the race committee to set the weather mark deep within the harbour.

For the opening rounds there were 15 knots of wind, but over the course of the day the wind dropped. Despite a delay waiting for a giant cruise ship to dock, six flights were held before principal race officer Peter Reggio stopped proceedings.

he RC44 is a carbon fibre racing machine that is 44 feet long, weighs 3.6 tonnes, three tonnes of which are in the keel, and has a 69-foot mast that weighs 121kg. All this, and more, fits into one by 40-foot container. Around 12 of these sail the tour: they are fast, rigid, exciting and great fun to watch, indeed even for those who don't follow the sport of sailing. They are built to do only one thing, to race, and they're not for the faint of heart.

The class rules dictate that the owner is at the wheel at all times. An exception allows the owner to appoint a driver for match racing. Each racing crew consists of eight people and most of these sailors are Olympians and America's Cup veterans. For the Valletta Cup - which was also the championship season opener - we had the likes of Dean Barker, Cameron Appleton, Vasco Vascotto, Iain Percy, Paul Goodison and Ray Davies.

finish the day with just one loss, Bronenosec winning on countback with Team Nika second. Italian tactician Michele Ivaldi, a member of the match race winning team Bronenosec, commented on the fact that owner Vladimir Liubomirov helmed Bronenosec. He explained that he does this to practice for the fleet racing that comprises the remainder of the regatta. "Today the wind conditions were really tricky, but we were improving our speed, communication and crew work and in the end it was a good day. Our goal was to come back on shore still with everyone being friends. So we achieved goal number one!" The next four days saw fleet racing encountering challenging conditions which resulted in some races cancelled, others brought forward and some delayed. Gale force winds hit the Maltese islands, a gentle reminder that the Mediterranean island is not just about balmy sun kissed days thus challenging the RC44 Valletta Cup competitors to the max. The warm Mediterranean sunshine made a welcome appearance for the final day of racing

although the wind was well into the 20s and substantial waves once again soaked the crews to the bone. The races saw crews severely challenged once again with almost all making costly errors. Nico Poons and his Charisma team put in another consistent day to win the RC44 Valletta Cup comfortably. "It feels great," said Poons, this being his first victory since joining the class at the beginning of 2014. "Today was not that easy!" admitted the Monaco-based Dutchman. "There was quite a lot of wind, but it was fun, especially downwind. You had to concentrate so that you didn't flip, which was difficult. Even upwind, going through the waves needed concentration." Poons' new tactician, Ray Davies, described the day. "It was fantastic yachting, but pretty ugly, especially on port tack offshore. It was a bit hairy at times in the gybes and a lot of boats

were wiping out. It is very easy to broach these boats." The RC44 Valletta Cup was led by Peter Reggio (Americas Cup race officer) who worked together with a team of top international umpires led by Marco Mercuriali and which included Miguel Allen, Mats Bjorklund, Garard Bosse and Bill Edgerton. The umpire team was also ably assisted by dedicated local umpires who were given the opportunity to officiate alongside this very distinguished group of internationally renowned and respected race officials. Now that the boats have left Malta they are on their way to the next destination Port Cervo on the Costa Smeralda, before heading off to Cascais in Portugal, Marstrand in Sweden and ending the circuit in Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. The RC44 Valletta Cup was organised by Yachting Events Limited, co-hosted by the Ministry for Economy, Industry and Small Business and supported by the Malta Tourism Authority and Transport Malta.

ased in Royal Clarence Marina in Gosport, on the south coast of England, race organiser Clipper Ventures is the brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail around the world singlehanded and non-stop.

Sir Knox-Johnston set off from Falmouth on June 14, 1968, with numerous bottles of whisky and fruitcake baked by his aunt stowed on board, for a voyage that was to last just over 10 months. He arrived back in Falmouth, after 312 days at sea, on April 22, 1969.

The company, overseen by Chief Executive William Ward has since transformed more than 4,000 novices into ocean racing sailors. Clipper Ventures has successfully organised nine round the world yacht races for non-professional sailors.

Around 40 per cent have no previous sailing ability but for all their diversity they have a single common denominator: they have put their everyday lives on hold to take part in this unique, life-changing challenge. Females make up around 40 per cent of the crew and, to date, the oldest competitor to take part is 74 years old. There is no upper age limit to take part in the race. To compete, crew members must be aged 18 or over and fit enough to take on the challenge.

The international nature of the Clipper Race is clearly demonstrated by the crew taking part. From Chinese to South African, Russian to Italian, more than 40 different nationalities are represented by those on board. On the Clipper 70s there are up to 22 paying crew on each yacht. Each team is led by a professional skipper and approximately half of the crew on board the boat at any one time are doing the full circumnavigation. Berth prices vary depending on which edition of the Clipper Race crew have signed up for and which individual legs. The moment a crewmember first sets foot on board a Clipper Race yacht, they embark on their Clipper Training, an intensive in-house programme that will prepare them to tackle the world's oceans. The man overboard drill is the first lesson they learn. Whether crewmembers are taking part in a single leg or the whole race they need the same level of mental, physical and technical preparation. Clipper Training provides crew with a first class training scheme that is both practical and theoretical, and this unique approach inspires confidence in individuals to tackle challenging situations and embark on the adventure of a lifetime. The race The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is the world's longest ocean race at 40,000 miles and takes 11 months to complete. It's the only global race for amateur sailors, so unlike your average sailing event, this is where nurses, teachers, doctors, retirees, students, bricklayers, sportsmen and women, lorry drivers, bankers and many more join together to take on the world's toughest ocean conditions. Designed to provide everyone, regardless of previous sailing knowledge, the chance to experience the exhilaration of circumnavigation, the Clipper Race was founded by legendary British sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and has turned almost 4,000 novices in nine races into ocean racers since its inception in 1995.

Points are accumulated in a Formula 1-style scoring system. The yacht with the highest total points at the finish wins the Clipper Race Trophy. On each yacht, round the world crewmembers spend on average at least 504 hours of their life stood behind the wheel during the race. While racing, each crewmember burns around 5,000 calories a day. The combined sail area for a Clipper 70 yacht is 1,530 square metres. To lay all of the sails on board out flat you would need an area the size of three premiership football pitches. The total linier use of fabric on board a Clipper 70 is 2,000 metres.

THE SPANISH CONQUEST The third edition of the Barcelona World Race was an extreme sporting challenge that put human limits to the test. In the end, it was Bernard Stamm and Jean Le Cam who triumphed.

he vastly experienced duo Bernard Stamm and Jean Le Cam have won the Barcelona World Race 2014-15 and set the reference time for the two-crew round the world race: 84 days, 5 hours, 50 minutes and 25 seconds to complete the 23,321.76 miles of the theoretical course

The elapsed time for Stamm and Le Cam, since the start from Barcelona on December 31, 2014 at midday UTC, was 84 days, 5 hours, 50 minutes and 25 seconds. The actual distance over ground covered by them was 27,950 miles, at an average speed of 13.82 knots. Stamm and Le Cam established the reference time for the race, which followed a different

course for this edition: from Barcelona to Barcelona, passing all three great capes Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn, leaving Antarctica to starboard. But for the first time the course went direct under New Zealand rather than diverting north to pass through the Cook Straits between North and South Island. This reduced the course distance by about 1,280 miles compared to previous editions.

The Barcelona World Race is the first and only double-handed, non-stop, round the world regatta. It is a lap of the globe starting and finishing in Barcelona. External assistance is permitted, although there are strict penalty regulations. This is an extreme ocean adventure that puts human limits to the test. The Barcelona World Race 2014/15 was the third edition of the regatta. The first edition was held in 2007/08 and the second in 2010/11. Organised by the Fundacio Navegacio Oceanica Barcelona, the regatta is part of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championships, with a coefficient of eight and categorisation as an ISAF Major Event. The crews race on Imoca 60 yachts, 18 metres in length. Their masts can reach up to a maximum of 29 metres.

A TITANIC BATTLE The fifth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race came to an exciting climax with tight racing and lead changes close to the finish line.

F

rom the outset, it looked like Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race could only end in a climax. In fact it did because after three weeks and 6,776 nautical miles, any of the leading four boats could have claimed victory in Itajaí. The stage more than lived up to its long-standing reputation as the roughest and toughest of the entire nine-month marathon and a real boatbreaker. It saw the retirement of Dongfeng Race Team following a mast breakage early on Monday, shortly before the crew was due to round Cape Horn, and at least three episodes when boats crashed to their sides in Chinese gybes. Much more surprising was the incredibly tight racing at the head of the fleet and with less than 575 nautical miles to go, it was still far too

close to call. Overnight on Friday, there were no less than three lead changes with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing emerging in front after both Team Alvimedica and Mapfre had briefly taken over at the head of the fleet. Team Brunel was by no means out of contention, either just 17.3 nautical miles behind the leaders. Behind them, Team SCA was doggedly ploughing through the south Atlantic, just over 700 nautical miles behind the leading pack with 1,277 nautical miles left to the finish. Victory would put Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing in a strong position after joint leaders, Dongfeng Race Team were forced to abandon the leg and continue under motor and sail to Itajaí for a new mast fit. But the overall race would be very far from over and, in any case, Mapfre, winners of Leg

4, were clearly in no mood to concede a metre to their Emirati rivals. On April 5, this monster leg ended in glory for Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. The team buried the miserable memories of three years ago to win an epic Southern Ocean/South Atlantic crossing in Leg 5 and claim their second stage victory in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. In 2012 Walker's crew were forced to return to Auckland with hull damage and eventually retired from the leg to Itajaí. The team must have feared more of the same when Cyclone Pam delayed the departure from New Zealand for three days. However, despite taking the worst that the Southern Ocean and then the South Atlantic could throw at them, the Emirati team

emerged triumphant after nearly 19 days of ultra-challenging, super-tight sailing.

He credited his team's versatility for much of their success.

Amazingly, skipper Ian Walker reported that they had reached Itajaí with the least amount of work for their shore crew to do of any leg so far in this edition.

"Seven out of eight of our guys drive, so nobody has to drive for too long. We rotate everybody and I can't speak highly enough of everybody in our team."

To add the icing to their cake, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing set the new best mark in the chase for the IWC prize for the most nautical miles sailed in 24 hours with 551 nautical miles leading up to Cape Horn.

He added that he dropped the keel on two occasions in heavy weather with 50-knot winds buffeting the fleet, losing some ground, but keeping his boat intact.

"Awesome. It's been such a monster of a leg, we were so, so stoked with the 24-hour record," said a jubilant Walker, 45, straight after crossing the line in front of a waterfront packed with thousands of spectators.

"In hindsight, that looks a pretty shrewd decision," Walker said. The stage victory leaves Walker's team seven points clear at the top of the standings with five of the nine legs now completed.

Darren Abdilla, 30, has won the BOV Malta National International One Metre Championship organised by the Malta Model Boats Association. When did you first get interested in IOM boats? started sailing International One Metre boats at the age of 16. Before that, I had been sailing dinghies since I was three years old. Due to other commitments, I had a long break of about 10 years from IOM and started sailing again four years ago.

I

Who or what inspired this interest? My father inspired me. I started sailing with him on dinghies and he also introduced me to IOM sailing. What level of interest is there locally in IOM boats and racing? In Malta we are one of the smallest clubs in the world and yet we manage to organise big events such as the Worlds in 1999. We have about 14 skippers sailing IOM but recently we have also introduced another smaller class named DF65. This category attracts beginners as the boats are cheap to buy.

You're the current local IOM champion. What did the preparation involve? I won the first IOM Nationals last year and this is my second consecutive win. As this is a radio control sport, the main training

should be focused on your mind. It is highly important to stay focused during the whole event, tactically and mentally. I have been training since I started sailing again four years ago. The training involves a lot of research on the internet, studying better skippers on videos and learning from my own mistakes during regattas. What boat do you currently race? At the moment I own two different models. I have a design named MX16 and this is a very fast boat overall, good in light winds and faster in strong winds. The MX16 is very popular because it is made in Taiwan to keep the selling price low. My other design is a Selkis. This is a new Italian design which is very fast in both light and strong winds. I sailed this model to win this year's Nationals. What are the ideal conditions for IOM racing? In much the same way as sailing in general, there are no ideal conditions for IOM. Our boats have three different rigs, which means they can be sailed in almost any wind strength from force 2 to 7 easily. In my opinion, I excel in light winds and thus I prefer very light winds.

You have recently placed fourth in the Malta Open: are you happy with the result? I'm ecstatic and proud to have achieved this historic result for Malta. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITIONS, WORTHY WINNERS T he second edition of the Rolex Swan Cup Caribbean concluded in style following four terrific days of sailing in the British Virgin Islands. Consistent breezes upwards of 20 knots provided constant challenges for the 21-strong fleet of Swan yachts as they negotiated courses taking in Virgin Gorda's renowned turquoise waters and evocatively named islands. Having dominated proceedings from the very first race, Swan 80 Selene and James Blakemore's Swan 53 Music were confirmed as the two Class winners - this was a sort of

redemption for both crews after being denied on the final day in 2013. Launched two years ago, the Rolex Swan Cup Caribbean marks the continuation of the longstanding partnership between Nautor's Swan, Rolex and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The Swan family has become accustomed to a world-class competition at the Rolex Swan Cup, organised since 1980 at the YCCS's flagship base in Porto Cervo. In keeping with Sardinia's Costa Smeralda, the Virgin Gorda archipelago is a sailing paradise, stunningly scenic and tactically engaging in equal measure. "It's a fantastic venue to go sailing, stunning, it's very hard to concentrate when you

are looking at all of the beautiful beaches and scenery," admitted Sean Clarkson, a professional sailor on Swan 90 Odin. "Virgin Gorda is a beautiful place. It's like Sardinia in the summer," observed Vittorio Codecasa owner of Jeroboam CA Nova. "Its warm water, it's a great venue, great hospitality, the event's well run. I really hope it can continue to grow in years to come," said Music tactician Mike Giles. "It's one of the best events I've ever been to," said James Madden, owner of Swan 601 Stark Raving Mad.

Selene gave a master class in keeping things measured. "We had a lot of breeze which the boat clearly likes," confirmed skipper Terry Halpin. "The secret of Selene is the fantastic team that we have been building up over the years. We've been able to identify the strengths among our crew and do manoeuvres on the boat really well. Last time was Stark Raving Mad's, this year was ours." Selene's nearest rivals Odin finished four points further back with defending champion Stark Raving Mad having to settle for third. Music finished second in Class B in 2013 losing out to Swan 42 Arethusa on a light final day. Blakemore's all South African crew began in determined fashion and performed flawlessly. "The heavier conditions suited the boat and the boys sailed really well the whole week, we had no major mistakes or failures," said a delighted Blakemore. "We've had two seconds in the Rolex Swan Cup before so with these winds this was our shot. It's a fantastic place to sail and the event is so well organised. We'll definitely be in Sardinia next year."

The popular social events and opportunity for the Swan family to unwind add extra lustre to the week. But make no mistake - competition is first and foremost. Madden's Stark Raving Mad began the week as the defending champion in the five-strong Class A.

Like Selene, Music also won all four races. Her nearest rival on the water was Paolo Scerni's Swan 42 Kora 6 who finished some six points behind. Made up of sailors from different backgrounds and experiences, Blakemore's crew selection has an admirable legacy aspect at its core. "The owner is establishing a platform for younger guys to come and sail," explained Giles. "Part of our group will always include two guys under 25, who will do six or seven regattas as a stepping stone to something else."

"To win, it's about making no mistakes. You've got to get the sails up and down, turn around the marks and through the islands without any errors because I'm sure all of the boats are going to be pretty well sailed," advised Madden at the start of the competition. Ultimately, the week's heavier breeze favoured Stark Raving Mad's larger rivals, notably Selene and Tom Siebel's Odin, the fastest boat on the water.

"This has been a wonderful event for everyone: the owners, the crews, their families and friends. There is something for everyone and the atmosphere is simply unique. The Rolex Swan Cup is always a showcase of passion and sportsmanship, and a testament to the joy of sailing," commented Nautor's Swan Chairman Leonardo Ferragamo.

Consistent sailing from the first day proved key for Selene, winner of all four races. "It's going to be about sailing clean and consistently from here on," predicted tactician Robert MacMillan after a successful first race.

This view was shared by YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo: "There is a good reason why the YCCS, Nautor's Swan and Rolex have been collaborating for over 30 years and this week has embodied the spirit of collaboration, sportsmanship and camaraderie that has characterized our partnership from the beginning."

ach September for the last 50 years, hundreds of sailors have flocked to the Rolex Big Boat Series in San Francisco, California for some of the best racing offered in the US. From this perspective, the 2015 regatta, scheduled for September 17-20 at St Francis Yacht Club, will be no different than previous Rolex Big Boat Series, but adding poignancy will be the fact that the 51st edition of the Series will mark the 10th anniversary of Rolex Watch US as its title sponsor, which is a strong indicator of a legacy that will endure. "Having Rolex as a sponsor has brought a unique and elevated level of notoriety to this event," said regatta co-chair Susan Ruhne. The St Francis Big Boat Series was established in 1964, and after many years as a supporting sponsor, Rolex was named title sponsor in 2005. "Over the past decade we have seen the Rolex Big Boat Series transform into the internationally renowned regatta that it is today, attracting sailors from not only the region but also across the continent and abroad." The regatta stays on the cutting edge of sailing by continually adding new classes and championships to its line-up. For instance, this year adds a new PHRF sport boat class, for 35- to 40-foot boats, to the mix of ORR (added last year), HPR (for Fast 40s), multihull and one-design class racing. "The Rolex Big Boat Series' reputation for highcaliber racing and its constant evolution with the sport of sailing are why we see such an impressive turnout year after year," said Ruhne. She added that the event originated stadium sailing by building its courses to utilise the amphitheatre setting of San Francisco Bay, using key vantage points that include the race deck of the yacht club itself. Specially engraved Rolex timepieces are awarded to winners of the coveted perpetual trophies that remain on display at St Francis Yacht Club.

CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN FOR

MEDICAL CARE Yacht charter operator Burma Boating is launching a crowdfunding campaign to help set up medical care in Myanmar's remote Mergui Archipelago. The 800 islands in the country's far south have little infrastructure and for some islands visiting yachts are the only connection to the outside world. “We had the idea a few months ago, as the residents on the islands often asked us to bring medical supplies. That's why we founded the Sailing Clinic,” said Captain Herbert Mayrhauser. The Sailing Clinic plans to start with two missions a year, visiting islands with insufficient medical infrastructure. “We are no medical experts, but we know the islands and we have the transportation. So we decided to crowdsource the rest,” said Mayrhauser. “The feedback so far was overwhelming and very encouraging.”

Each mission will consist of foreign and Myanmar doctors who volunteer and join the clinic for at least one week. Now the company launched a crowdfunding campaign to organise funds the same way it found the volunteers: by asking for help. The first mission was organised last April. Donors also had a chance to win a sailing trip aboard one of Burma Boating's classic sailing yachts. The Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar's south remains one of the planet's most unspoilt destinations. The 800 islands only recently opened to foreign visitors. The traditional inhabitants of the Mergui Archipelago are the Moken, a people who live off, and on, the sea. Sometimes called sea-gypsies, this ethnic minority group leads a traditional,

semi-nomadic lifestyle, dominated by diving for sea cucumbers, fishing and bartering.

Method Rub the mint between your hands to release the aromas and place at the bottom of a tall glass. Chop the lime into pieces and place on top of the mint. Add the sugar syrup and muddle to release the juices. Fill the glass with crushed ice, pour in the rum and top with soda water. Stir everything together and garnish with a mint sprig.
