pringboard+ is part of the Government’s Skills to Work initiative aimed at making it easier for jobseekers to find work and for employers to plug skills gaps in their organisations. This year there are free part-time and fulltime higher education places for up to 9,000 jobseekers to reskill, upskill and find a new career path. These 9,000 places will be divided across part-time Springboard+ courses and full-time ICT skills conversion programmes. A total of 293 courses are available at 42 higher education institutions across Ireland. “Now in its fifth year, Springboard+ is playing a crucial role in rapidly responding to emerging skills needs in high-growth areas and in supporting people back into employment,” said Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan, at
the programme’s recent launch. All courses are offered for a maximum of 12 months and are based on identified current or future skills needs within the economy. Participants who complete these courses receive awards at certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate level (Levels 6-9 on the National Framework of Qualifications). This year, courses will focus on areas such as ICT, Manufacturing, Construction, Entrepreneurship, Cross-Enterprise Skills and International Financial Services. FILLING THE GAPS
SKILLS TO TRADE INTERNATIONALLY Ireland is a highly export-orientated economy, the world is now seen as our oyster from an economic and enterprise point of view. Successfully exploiting the global opportunities is not just about creating products and services at home, companies then need the right skill set to successfully sell those products and services in foreign markets. There are skills shortages currently in Irish enterprise to support the activities associated with trading internationally. This is particularly the case for Irish small and medium-sized enterprises. Areas where there are demand for skills and employment opportunities include global and international management skills (particularly

ndustry is growing in Ireland. Despite the jobs that have been shed during the recession and continuing relatively high level of unemployment, a number of sectors are booming and jobs are available. There is, however, a key issue for those wishing to pursue a career in growing areas. These developing sectors require new kinds of skills and knowledge. For example, as a result of the growing role of biotechnology in drug treatment, those working on the production of drugs need to have a high level of knowledge and practice of clean production to ensure non-contamination within the process. The Springboard+ initiative offers unemployed people the opportunity to undertake qualifications at certificate, degree and post-graduate level in key areas where enterprise is growing and expanding. As well as their previous employment experience, Springboard+ participants are adding new skills and knowledge to their career in a new sector. WHERE CAN YOU UPSKILL FOR EMPLOYMENT WITH THE HELP OF SPRINGBOARD+? Each year skills shortages in Ireland are identified through a range of sources which include the Skills and Labour Market Research Unit, SOLAS and the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY The ICT Sector in Ireland attracts global investment with nine of the top 10 US ICT companies operating here, and all ten of the ‘Born on the Internet’ companies. There are over 200 IDA- supported ICT companies, directly employing approximately 37,000 people. They represent 22% of total exports, estimated at €35 billion. In addition, Ireland is showing the world the way in fostering and delivering cloud computing services. Key skills for the ICT sector continue to be the most frequently mentioned as difficult to source by recruitment agencies. Demand is exceeding supply for a wide range of software design and development roles, including in web applications, user experience and interaction, ‘the cloud’, database architecture, network engineering and mobile technology applications. activities including Banking/Asset Financing, Corporate Treasury, Asset Management, Securitisation, Mutual Funds, Insurance and Pensions. A range of other functions support these core activities. The average salary for workers in the IFSC is €60,100. Despite job losses, high level financial skills in the areas of risk and quantitative analysis, process innovation and product development, accounting, actuarial, project management and compliance and regulatory standards are in short supply. Financial experts with proficiency in financial software packages (e.g. SAP) can be particularly difficult to source. Demand for high level financial skills is expected to be driven by the global recovery, reform of the banking system, product innovation, changes in the regulatory environment and attitudes to risk. Firms announcing expansion in Ireland in 2015 include NuoDB, Megatransfert SAS, and Lemanik.
analytics, which has the potential to create significant additional employment in the economy, involves the mining, analysis, interpretation and utilisation of Data including Big Data (obtaining and utilising large volumes of data in structured and unstructured forms). Globally, there is a reported shortage of skilled professionals with data analytics skills. ICT-related job creation is expected to be sustained as Ireland continues to be a high profile, world-class destination for ICT activities and investment. Companies announcing expansion in Ireland in 2015 include Apple, LogMeIn, LexisNexis, IBM, MalwareBytes, IDT911, and Dell. SKILLS FOR MANUFACTURING: BIOPHARMA – PHARMACHEM Nine of the top 10 global pharmaceutical companies are located in Ireland, with seven of the top 10 ‘pharmaceutical blockbusters’ produced here. The main pharmaceutical activities carried out in Ireland are Research and Development, Global Business Service Centres, High Value Manufacturing, Headquarters and IP Management and Supply Chain Management. Over 24,000 people are employed in the sector in Ireland today, with a similar amount employed in businesses providing services to the sector. Jobs that companies seek to fill in the sector typically include laboratory and engineering technicians, engineering professionals, scientists and business and finance staff including regulatory and supply-chain professionals. Companies announcing expansion in Ireland in 2015 to-date include ABEC Inc, Zimmer and Bausch + Lomb. SKILLS FOR MANUFACTURING: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES (‘MEDTECH’) Ireland, the second largest exporter of MedTech in Europe produces €9.4 billion of
exports annually. This includes 50% of ventilators used in acute hospitals worldwide, and 33% of the world’s contact lenses. 30 million diabetics (one in four) per year use Irish-made injectable devices. 25,000 people are employed in the sector, representing the highest employment per capita of Medical Technology personnel in Europe. Eight of the top 10 global companies have a manufacturing base in Ireland, with a total of 250 companies of varying sizes operating here. Medical Technologies activities include research and development, high value manufacturing, globally traded services, IP management and Supply Chain Management in the cardiovascular and cardiac rhythm management, orthopaedic, diagnostic and ophthalmic sectors. Jobs that companies seek to fill in the sector typically include positions at varying levels in the areas of manufacturing process, engineering, and quality control. The continuing increase in demand for healthcare and healthcare products is expected to be driven by the aging population, greater expectations and a higher awareness of health issues. Companies working in Ireland include Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and Teleflex. Companies announcing expansion in Ireland in 2015 to-date include Abbvie, CRI and MossVision Inc. OTHER MANUFACTURING Leading providers of industrial products have chosen Ireland as a location for activities such as high value manufacturing, supply chain management and research and development. Ancillary activities include international services and intellectual property management. The sector in Ireland ranges from companies in the automotive sector and aerospace industry to those operating in mechanical and electrical engineering, fluid components, process equipment and materials handling.
such as management skills, creativity, and logistics. CONSTRUCTION SKILLS In 2014, the construction sector was responsible for 45% of all the additional jobs created in the economy. In Q1 2015 alone, over 6,000 jobs were added in the sector. The sector is benefiting from high levels of foreign direct investment across the country, from such companies as Regeneron, investing $300m in a new facility in Limerick; Apple, building an €850m data centre in Galway; and Alexion Pharmaceuticals, with a planned €450m new facility in Blanchardstown. Construction tradespersons and professionals such as architects will increasingly require ‘green’ construction skills. There are already some indications of a shortage of construction and property surveyors in the economy. ICT competencies are becoming increasingly important in construction projects, in particular Building Information Modelling (BIM) and energy retrofit skills.
around planning and market research); foreign language proficiency; international sales and marketing skills, distribution and installation skills (e.g. project management, supply chain management); product/service design skills; and customer service and support skills. Combinations of these skills within the same individual are also in demand. CROSS–ENTERPRISE SKILLS A number of skills gaps have emerged across sectors which include the need to improve
mathematical proficiency and foreign language capabilities (e.g. for international trade, see above), to develop business acumen and entrepreneurship in tandem with technical skills (for example within software engineering), to develop skills for creativity, innovation and design, and improving generic skills such as communication, project management and team working. Data analytics and ‘big data’ skills are rapidly becoming highly sought-after across enterprises. The EGFSN has identified other skills needs
ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Government stated in the 2014 Action Plan for Jobs that its ambition is for Ireland to be among the most entrepreneurial nations in the world and acknowledged as a world-class environment in which to start and grow a business. The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Institute (GEDI) ranks Ireland as the 19th best country in the world for entrepreneurial development. GEDI’s Female Entrepreneurship Index 2015 places Ireland 11th overall for female entrepreneurial development, up from 16th in 2014. In 2014 alone, Enterprise Ireland funded 183 start-ups.
INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL SERVICES More than 250 global financial institutions have established operations in Ireland, with many located in Dublin’s International Financial Services Centre. The IFSC was created by the Irish Government in 1987 to drive the development of the sector, and employs over 36,000 people. The IFSC now houses many of the world’s leading financial institutions, with

“THEY ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO HELP YOU”
KEEP YOUR GOAL IN MIND Enrolling in a Springboard+ course can help you to achieve your career ambitions
“I would absolutely recommend Springboard+ to others,” says Riadh Mahmoudi who recently completed a Level 8 Special Purpose Certificate in International Project Management with IBAT College in Dublin. “It can be difficult to find a job. But when you do a Springboard+ course, not only do you increase your knowledge and education, you also gain a lot more confidence too. After you get your qualification you can return to the jobs market in a stronger position. There were roles that, one year previously, I wouldn’t have been able to apply for them but after I completed my degree I was in a stronger position to go for them. There is no doubt that Springboard+ will help you to gain employment.” Riadh, an Algerian national, has been living in Lucan with his family for 10 years. Before

3D BRINGS ANIMATION CAREER CLOSER TO REALITY FOR BEN WALSH “I would definitely recommend Springboard+ to anyone who wants to make a career in this area” 25 year old Ben Walsh from Malahide in Dublin had always been fascinated and impressed by the level of artistic skill displayed by the great Hollywood animation studios in movies like Toy Story, An American Tail and the Lego Movie. He had been drawing since he was a child and while Ben loved to use pencil and watercolour, animation always interested him. “When I left school, I studied Computer Science at DIT but I soon realised that it wasn’t for me and that my heart lay in a more artistic direction,” said Ben. “So I applied for one of the animation courses at Ballyfermot and was delighted to be accepted.” He graduated from the Ballyfermot College of Further Education with a Higher National Diploma in Illustration in 2012. Unfortunately, it was the height of the recession and as the course did not include the now necessary skills in 3-D animation, work was proving thin on the ground. So Ben took on other tempo-

rary employment, including a three month internship at the National Museum of Archaeology, drawing ancient artefacts by hand. His lack of 3-D animation skills was still standing in the way of meaningful work experience in his preferred career until a friend of his mum mentioned the Springboard+ scheme. He spotted and applied for the Certificate in 3D for Games course at the Dundalk Institute of Technology which had just become available under the scheme, and was accepted following an interview and submission of his portfolio. The course, which only began at DKIT in 2014, equips participants with skills in 3D modelling, animation, game concept development, project generation and management along with key game theory principles. The students gain vital software skills in programs such as 3D Studio Max and Unreal Engine 4. “I attended college two days a week and in between, there were plenty of projects to be completed,” said Ben. “There were only 13 of us in the class and it was great to be once again learning alongside like-minded people. We also received a lot of one-to-one support and mentoring from our three lecturers which was excellent for building confidence. One of my favourite parts of the course was creating three animated pieces of work in the 3D Studio Max program.” Ben also benefited from four weeks work experience with Glue Visual Effects in East Wall, Dublin, which handles visual effects for both film and advertising production companies. “I worked on animation for an exciting project and I loved every minute of it. I am now feeling pretty good about getting full-time work in this industry and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to make a career in this area.”

undertaking his Springboard+ course at IBAT College he had achieved a Masters in Law and gained strong experience in the work force with companies like Microsoft. “When I lost my job I was looking for ways to improve my CV and my employability. The IBAT course appealed to me. “No matter what business area you are looking to work in be it operations, HR, IT or marketing, project management skills will always be very useful. This course helps you to be more organised and to manage projects more efficiently.” Riadh says he felt comfortable in IBAT straight away. “The campus impressed me. It was clean and modern and the city centre location was very convenient for me. The lecturers were extremely knowledgeable and efficient. It was a six month course and it was quite intense. We studied international project management, operations management, e-marketing and international marketing. I found the modules to be useful and relevant to my career goals.” Riadh says that his new qualification was an important step towards achieving his career ambitions. “There are a couple of Irish companies investing in Algeria at the moment in industries like gas and agriculture. My goal is to work as a consultant with these companies and to help them to develop further the operational side of their business in Algeria. “My qualification, along with the other courses I undertake as part of my continued studies, will help me to work with these Irish companies in North Africa.”
Thanks to Springboard+, Shane Ryan has found his career path
Irish Independent I 6 August 2015
“I have been working with Intel for about a month. It is going well,” says Shane Ryan from Tipperary. “We make semiconductors, the chips that go into computers. It’s a challenging job. But I feel I have settled in. It is a nice company to work for.” Prior to securing employment in Intel, Shane studied a Level 6 Springboard+ Certificate in Cleanroom Manufacturing at IT Sligo from September 2014 to May. “Six years ago I was a courier in Dublin. I got a degree in Carlow IT in Mechanical Engineering. After I graduated I applied for lots of jobs but with no success. I was at a loose end. “And then I came across the Springboard+ course. I wanted to pick a course that would accompany my engineering degree. I was delighted to find the Cleanroom Manufacturing course. The first thing that I noticed was that it was not a long winded process for applying. It took about 10 minutes to

POSITIVE IMPACT ON EMPLOYABILITY “I wouldn’t be in this job if it wasn’t for that course.” So says Keith Bruton who is now working as an Upstream Biotechnician for Biomarin in Cork. Keith studied a three month Level 9 Springboard+ course in Biopharmaceutical Production with NIBRT. After he enrolled in the course it didn’t take long for work opportunities to arise. “I always enjoyed Chemistry in school and so I attained a BSc in Biochemistry from UCD. After I graduated I found it extremely hard to get into the biopharmaceutical industry due to lack of experience with specific equipment. I had heard so many people in the industry saying they send their own employees for training in NIBRT, so I thought that doing a course would help me stick out from ordinary job seekers looking to breach this industry. “After a month in the course I had been offered a job in Biomarin and most of the interview focused around what I was doing in NIBRT. NIBRT had a huge impact on my employability for this sector.” Today Keith has settled into his new company and is enjoying his work. “I have been working with Biomarin since December. It was a great Christmas present to get! It took me a month or two to find my

After completing a postdoctorate, Caitlin O’Mahony had been working in academia for a number of years. When she tried to advance her career she found a number of stumbling blocks in her way. “I decided to move from academia to industry. However I found my experience lacked in-depth knowledge and practical skills of manufacturing processes and a GMP environment,” says Caitlin. She quickly identified NIBRT as the leading provider of courses in the BioPharma industry. Through the Springboard+ initiative she enrolled in the Level 9 Graduate Certificate in Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering - a collaborative program with University College Dublin and NIBRT. “The course provided me with the theo-
retical knowledge and practical experience required to work in the Biopharma Industry. I would recommend this program as I believe it successfully bridged the gap in my experience and helped me to achieve my first role in industry. “I liked the way the course was set up. There was a big emphasis on the academic and learning side of things. There was also a professional development side of it where we had one-toone career coaching. That was really beneficial. They really developed your career goals and showed you what to do to achieve them. Before she had finished her Springboard+ course, Caitlin secured a position with Janssen Biologics B.V. in Cork. “I have just been made permanent as Senior Associate Scientist. There’s a dynamic workforce here. There are new challenges everyday. It’s a really rewarding role and I am enjoying it.”

feet. It has been a huge learning curve. But things have been going well. I have been made permanent so I am very happy.” Keith is full of praise for both the Biopharmaceutical Production course and NIBRT. “NIBRT gave me all the skills that I would need to do well in this industry. What I do in my job now is exactly what I learned in the course. It really did capture what was needed in terms of putting equipment together and using it. It was spot on. “Doing this course has been easily the best decision I have made so far in terms of career progression. I would 100% recommend this course, it’s a no brainer!”

It was really handy. “I also liked the fact that Springboard+ have chosen courses in areas where there are skills shortages. At the end of the day I was aiming to find a job.” Shane says that the course has turned his employment prospects around. “The course lasted a year and I really enjoyed it. As soon as I had completed the course I started to send out CVs and I got completely different responses. I started to get interviews and before I wasn’t getting any interviews at all. “Sligo IT are great. They constantly send you job opportunities to apply for. They are always trying to help you.”
A CAREER CHANGE FOR THE BETTER Kara Crinion had previously worked in the hospitality sector. She decided to make a career change. And was looking to move into an area that would offer a number of job prospects “A friend of mine was doing a course through Jobbridge. She mentioned Springboard+ to me and said I should look into it as it might give me the qualifications I needed to reach my goal.” When Kara researched the Springboard+ programmes she discovered two courses she thought she would be interested in – both in the computer science field. She ended up opting for the Higher Diploma in Web Development at Griffith College Dublin. As Kara hadn’t stepped into a classroom in seven years she was understandably apprehensive. “I was nervous going into the course but at the same time it was something I really wanted to do. I had to really push myself as it wasn’t an easy undertaking. I found getting back into a routine difficult but after a few weeks I settled in and got my head into it. “I’m so glad I did. The course was really comprehensive and gave me a lot of practical

knowledge. It was a lot of work but it covered everything you’d need to work in the field of computer science.” Today Kara is working in Web Together – an award-winning development agency. “Once I got my diploma I discovered that there were lots of opportunities available to me. There are lots of companies looking for qualified people and I now had the skills to meet those needs.” Still, she has a word of caution. “Don’t just sit back once you get your qualification and think the hard work’s over. I really found that I had to go looking for opportunities and contact companies to see if anyone was willing to meet me. That’s when I discovered Web Together and I’m so happy I went the extra mile in my career search. “If anyone is looking for a challenge or a career change like I was I would whole-heartedly recommend Springboard+.”

BRIGHT PROSPECTS Sharon Kelly had been living and working in the UK for a number of years when she decided to return to Ireland. What she found was a completely different Ireland to the one she left “I quickly discovered that my skillset did not match the jobs available. I had a Ph.D in Molecular Biology but I found that there were greater job prospects in the medical devices area.” So Sharon decided to undertake the Specialist Diploma in Medical Device Science in NUI Galway as part of Springboard+. What really appealed to Sharon was that the course was held on Saturdays. “The structure of the course was really helpful for me as I didn’t want to do a full-time course. My ultimate goal was to get a job and I wanted to be available for work should the opportunity arrive.” Sharon started the course last September

and secured a job four months later. “Working and studying at the same time was tough but I did it with the help of my family. Without their support it would have been impossible.” Would Sharon recommend this course to others? “Absolutely. The workload was tough and it’s not something to take lightly but the pay-off is worth all your effort. I particularly enjoyed the practical part of the course as it was very hands-on.” Sharon has recently had a baby and is home with her new-born at the moment, but feels her prospects for the future are bright. “I really feel that this course will help me in the future. Having it under my belt will be really useful and I’m confident I will go on to rewarding and enjoyable employment.”

THE SKILLS TO START AGAIN In 2007 Miriam Heylin returned home to Ireland having worked in the United States for 20 years. She found work with an American company in Castleisland in Kerry. However, things took a turn for the worst when she lost her job as a result of the economic downturn “After all of that time in America I came home just in time for the recession,” jokes Miriam. “When the company closed down, part of the redundancy package that they offered me was a Springboard+ course in

DEVELOPING YOUR OWN BUSINESS When Keith Moore lost his job in the retail sector he took a step back to weigh up his options. He eventually came to the decision that he wanted to do an education course to improve his prospects. So he applied for the postgrad in Innovation Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at the Innovation Academy UCD “The reason that I went for this course was that it really stood out from all the other courses on offer. I felt there was a lot I could gain from completing this Springboard+ course. “I always wanted to set up my own business and I thought this was a good opportunity to see if it was right for me. After all, I wasn’t losing anything.” What particularly appealed to Keith was the fact that the course was structured unlike any other. “There are no teachers. You learn by doing. From day one it was very much the attitude that you put into the course what you wanted to get out of it.”

Today she owns her own business – Grow Marketing Solutions. She puts much of her success down to what she learned during her time with IT Tralee. “It was a challenging course. A lot of good quality work was required. But the course acted like a catalyst. All the experience that I had from America and interests that I had, such as photography, all came together. I learned things like photoshop and the process of marketing and how to maximise social media for marketing. “I opened up my own business a year ago and it has been very successful. Many of the skills I use in my business I got from Springboard+. I have found my niche. My business allows small companies to access the marketing tools that larger companies can access but at a much lower price point. “I feel I have carved out something great for myself,” she says.

I never thought I’d go back to education but once I focussed it all came into place. It’s a new avenue for me and I’m finding the course really interesting. “The course allows me to do a lot of the work in my own time and that has made a huge difference to me.” David will complete his Springboard+ course next June. By that stage he will have a diploma. But what’s next? “Hopefully things will start turning around for me employment wise. I would also love to do a night course so I could finish my degree. I think that would be a real achievement. “The main thing when undertaking a Springboard+ course is that you are willing to put the work in and understand that it’s not going to be an easy path, but you’ll get there.”

Finding success at NUI Galway
TOP questions to ask 10 before undertaking
N
UI Galway offers a number of prestigious courses through the Springboard+ initiative, including graduate courses in the area of technology management and software development and minor awards at honours degree level in the area of e-Business, operational excellence and high performance computing. The courses are largely delivered by blended learning so students can balance study with other interests and are free to take up work while completing the course. Placements and a variety of career supports are also offered, including a new course in professional and digital skills to give graduates that edge. Steve Shanahan took the Specialist Diploma in Lean & Quality Systems; ‘Finding myself
a Springboard+ course So you’ve decided to enhance your career prospects by completing a Springboard+ course, but you still have some questions and concerns
1
HOW MANY SPRINGBOARD+ COURSES CAN I APPLY FOR? You can apply for a maximum of 10 courses via the website: www.springboardcourses.ie
2
CAN I DO MORE THAN ONE SPRINGBOARD+ COURSE AT A TIME? No, participants can only study one Springboard+ course at a time.
3
I WAS ON A MOMENTUM COURSE PREVIOUSLY. AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A SPRINGBOARD+ COURSE? Yes, as long as you fulfil the eligibility requirements and have successfully completed your MOMENTUM course.
4
WHEN DO SPRINGBOARD+ COURSES START? Each course is different but the majority start from September. You will find details of the starting dates on each course information page on www.springboardcourses.ie
5
HOW LONG DO SPRINGBOARD+ COURSES LAST? While they all vary in duration, none of the part-time courses are longer than one calendar year but most courses will include a work placement upon conclusion of the period of study.
6
WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET A JOB OFFER WHILE PARTICIPATING ON A SPRINGBOARD+ COURSE? You should accept the job. Taking up a suitable job takes precedence over participating in a Springboard+ course. For this reason, higher education providers have been asked to respond to this issue with as much flexibility as possible. For example, the college may offer participants the opportunity to complete their course during evenings and/or weekends.
7
ARE SPRINGBOARD+ COURSES RECOGNISED ON THE NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS (NFQ)? Yes. All Springboard+ courses are recognised on the NFQ and lead to a higher education award at Level 6, 7, 8 or 9 on the Framework.
8
CAN I GET RECOGNITION FOR MY WORK-BASED EXPERIENCE IF I HAVE NO PREVIOUS HIGHER EDUCATION EXPERIENCE WHEN APPLICANTS ARE BEING CONSIDERED FOR A SPRINGBOARD+ COURSE? All Springboard+ providers are required to consider applications based on prior learning OR previous experience on the part of both people with or without formal qualifications.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM ELIGIBLE FOR A SPRINGBOARD+ COURSE?
PART-TIME COURSES The majority of Springboard+ courses are part-time courses and can be a great way to secure a qualification while remaining available for and actively seeking work. To be eligible for a part-time Springboard+ course a person must be unemployed with a previous history
12
SPRINGBOARD+
of employment and satisfy one of the following four criteria: 1. Be in receipt of one of Jobseekers Benefit, Jobseekers Allowance, One Parent Family, Disability Allowance, Qualified Adults of Working Age, Carers Allowance, Farm assist/Fish Assist, Widow(er)s Contributory or Non-Contributory Pension, Blind Pension or Deserted Wives Allowance from the Department of Social Protection, OR 2. Be signing for social insurance contribution credits OR 3. Be previously self-employed. 4. And be actively seeking employment. For those on a qualifying social welfare payment, there is no requirement to be in receipt of a payment for a particular period of time prior to the commencement of the programme. However, Springboard+ providers are required to give priority to applications from people who are long-term unemployed.
For the full list of Springboard courses at NUI Galway visit www.nuigalway.ie/ adult-learning/springboard/
9
CAN I MAKE A SPRINGBOARD+ APPLICATION DIRECTLY TO A PARTICIPATING COLLEGE? No. All applications must be made online through www.springboardcourses.ie
10
I HAVE ACCEPTED AN OFFER OF A SPRINGBOARD+ PLACE BUT I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND. CAN I RE-APPLY FOR A DIFFERENT COURSE? Once you have accepted an offer of a place, all other applications you have made are automatically cancelled. If you have accepted the course and have changed your mind you must inform the relevant course provider immediately. You can still apply for another course as long as other providers are still receiving applications.
ICT Skills Conversion courses To be eligible for a full-time ICT skills conversion course a person must be suitably qualified or in line with the policy for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) of the higher education provider, someone with sufficient relevant experience to undertake a full-time Level 8 ICT conversion course. Such candidates are eligible to participate on an ICT Skills Conversion course regardless of employment status or whether or not s/he is in receipt of income support. It is worth noting however that ICT Skills Conversion providers are required to give
priority to those who are long-term unemployed. A person who is in receipt of Jobseekers Benefit or Jobseekers Allowance for at least nine of the previous twelve months may qualify to retain their income support while participating in an ICT skills conversion course. Qualifying participants will transfer to a bespoke version of the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA).
For full details on eligibility, visit www.springboardcourses.ie/eligibility
Thinking about studying through Springboard+? Here’s how to check if you are eligible There’s no doubt that there are many benefits to participating in the Springboard+ programme. Each course is provided free of charge and allows you to keep any social protection payments you are entitled to. If you find yourself out of work then gaining a Springboard+ qualification will help you to enhance your current skills and develop new ones and thus improve both your immediate and longer-term employability. Another huge benefit is that if you succeed in landing a job whilst completing a course, colleges have been asked to provide as much flexibility as possible for you to complete your studies. Sound like the right programme for you? Great! The next step is to determine whether you are eligible for the scheme or not.
out of work and with a skills shortage, I found the course kept me positive and focussed, added a significant level of education to my CV and has enabled me to find a new employer who is keen to use my new found skills. I had strong support from both Springboard+ and NUI Galway from registration and right throughout the course.’ Ray Waldron is another Springboard+ graduate who echoes that sentiment; ‘It does feel great to be back in the workforce at last - having the Diploma was major factor in getting the job!’
APPLY! Once you have found the course or courses you wish to apply for, click on the “Apply Now” option on www.springboardcourses.ie to begin the application process. You will be asked to provide some personal, education and social protection/employment details. At the end of the application process you will see an image which will confirm if your application was submitted correctly. The college will then be in contact with you on the status of your application.

reland’s medtech industry is growing and this is creating exciting new opportunities for jobseekers. With over 27,000 people already working in the sector, Ireland is the highest medtech employer, per capita, in Europe. The latest survey by the Irish Medical Device Association (IMDA), the Ibec group which represents the sector, shows that six out of 10 companies are looking to hire quality engineers. How do I know if this course is for me? With a bit of careful research you can find the right opportunity
I
t is clear that there are a number of skills shortages in Ireland. From information and communications technology to manufacturing to international financial services and construction, employers are on the lookout for talent in a wide range of industries. The key is to position yourself well so that you can take advantage of these openings. Springboard+, which is primarily targeted at jobseekers with a previous history of employment, offers a choice of over 290 free, part-time and intensive conversion courses in higher education from certificate, to degree, to post-graduate level (to see if you are eligible for a course turn to page 12). It is easy to search courses on www.springboardcourses.ie (and you can find a complete list of courses on pages 10 and 11). With such a large choice of courses available, it is easy to become daunted as you search. How can you know that a particular course is the right option for you? The first step to finding the most suitable option is to do your research. Knowledge is power and the more information you know about a course the better. Start by having a read of the detailed course information on the Springboard+ website. Ask yourself ‘can I see myself enjoying these topics?’ and ‘can I picture myself working well in this industry?’ While there will likely be a lot of information about the course on the Springboard+ website your research should only be starting here. Try to gather as much information as
to do before your next job interview
YOU ARE UNIQUE So show it. While employers do value skills, they value solutions too. Rather than just showing the day-to-day tasks you completed in your previous position, try to show off your achievements and accomplishments in the role. CLEAR AND CONCISE Employers spend around 20 to 30 seconds scanning your CV so it needs to remain clutter-free and easy to read. If they can’t find what they are looking for they will move on. So don’t hide information amongst an array of elaborate graphics.
ERROR FREE Think of your CV as how you sell yourself to an employer. Nothing is a bigger turn off to a recruiter than casual typos and mistakes. Get a friend to read over your CV for any errors.
TAILOR YOUR CV Making the effort to tailor your CV to suit the requirements of each particular job that you are applying for can greatly increase your chances of securing an interview.
UP-TO-DATE It’s a good idea to revisit your CV every month and add anything of importance and cut any information that is no longer required.

TOP CV TIPS
Springboard+ prepares jobseekers to find careers where there are skills shortages. But once you have completed the course, how can you ensure you stand out from other applicants? These useful tips can help to show your CV off in the best light.
you can. Consider calling the Freephone Guidance line 1800 303 523 which offers advice on course choices and applications. Why not seek out advice from someone who has studied the course in recent years? Their insight can be invaluable when it comes to making a final decision on the right course to choose. College staff and lectures are a great source of information too. If you do contact a tutor or lecturer, have a list of questions ready to ask about the various modules of the course and what working in the industry will be like. It’s a great way to get a head start. Also, consider seeking out people to chat with that are working in career areas that you are interested in. Most will be happy to receive a call or an e-mail with your questions about the career they’ve chosen. If you are still not sure which course to choose the old fashioned technique of a ‘pros and cons’ list can often work well as a deal breaker!
4
STAY CALM Good preparation is the key to staying in control. Remember to speak clearly, smile and that your interviewers are just normal people, and they may be nervous too!
5
ASK QUESTIONS You should always have some questions for your interviewer to demonstrate your interest in the position. Prepare a minimum of five questions, some of which will give you more information about the job and some which delve deeper into the culture and goals of the company.

improved success rate. Thirty per cent of Springboard+ 2011-2012 graduates were reported to be in employment or self-employment within just six weeks of finishing their course. This rose to 40 per cent last year. And 60 per cent reported being employed or self-employed two years after completing their course. However, it is worth noting that on some courses, 90 per cent of graduates found employment after completing the course.
How successful has Springboard+ been in helping people reach their employment goals? We take a look at how successful the scheme has been since its inception in 2011
S
pringboard+ may have been introduced by the Government a mere five years ago but it has already accomplished a lot. To date, over 21,000 people have participated on 812 courses across 42 colleges. That said, the Government’s incentive to introduce the scheme was to get the people of Ireland back to work. Has it achieved this goal? We look at the facts
WHAT KINDS OF ROLES ARE THESE PEOPLE IN? The evaluation also reports that 62 per cent are in managerial or professional roles and 95 per cent of respondents’ jobs are in Ireland. The survey also discovered that 24 per cent of survey respondents in full-time jobs are earning over €37,200 per annum. WORK PLACEMENT Ask any Springboard+ participant what was the most beneficial part of the course and you are likely to hear the response: work placement. This is not surprising considering 12 per cent of graduates who were placed on work placement as part of their Springboard+ course found employment in the company they completed their work placement in in 2012. This rose to 14 per cent in 2013 and to 18 per cent in 2014. The good news, this year, is that the HEA are placing more emphasis on the work placement component of Springboard+. Excluding courses focused on entrepreneurship, over 90 per cent of Springboard+ 2015-16 courses include a placement. SPRINGBOARD+ SUCCESS Since the recession there has been much debate as to whether college and university graduates are equipped with the necessary skills to enter the labour market. An evaluation conducted by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) shows that Springboard+ participants – who undertake courses that aim to fill skill gaps or shortages in the economy – have an

Here are our top tips for adult learners who may be nervous about re-entering education
S
o you’ve decided to undertake a Springboard+ course to improve your employment opportunities in the future. If it’s been a while since you stepped into a classroom, however, you may be feeling apprehensive. Don’t worry, this is completely normal. Common concerns include everything from taking tests to developing study habits and finding a balance between study and home responsibilities. That said, choosing a Springboard+ course can not only enhance your employability but your connection with a new group of peers will increase your network of contacts, creating yet more opportunities in the future. So nerves shouldn’t put you off heading back to the classroom. Below we take a look at some of the fears you may have – and how to overcome them. GET INVOLVED The first few weeks of your course are the best time to meet other people. Developing a group of friends who you can discuss assignments and lectures with or borrow notes from if you miss a class is an invaluable resource. They can also offer support if you become overwhelmed and need re-assurance that this is the right route for you. While you may have family and home commitments, it’s important to make a genuine effort to meet new people on your course. And if you’re apprehensive at the prospect of approaching complete strangers, remember one thing: everyone is in the same boat as you. MANAGE YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY Pick the course that suits you, build on the strengths you have and do not ignore them. If you chose a course that has a large time commitment and will require a high level of engagement, talk with your family and ensure you have their support as without that you may struggle. If you have been out of education for a long time don’t be afraid to go back - many of these courses have a huge practical element. You’ll also find that lecturers and tutors want you to succeed and will help you reach your goals. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER Coming to college for the first time or coming back after a long break can be intimidating. It
18
SPRINGBOARD+
is common for adult learners to be concerned about not only the practicalities of managing the demands that their education pursuits demand but also to be worried about how they will fare compared to younger students. The important thing to remember is that you have garnered a wealth of experience during your time in employment. Even if the course you are considering embarking on is in a completely different field than your area of previous employment, you can draw on your life experiences and utilise them to achieve results. USE TECHNOLOGY Returning to education poses many challenges and using technology you are unfamiliar with can be one of them. The reality is that computer technologies can be a great tool for accessing resources and completing course work. If you are concerned that you may not be up-to-date with the technologies the course provider utilises ask what computer supports are available to you. Many colleges and institutions provide extra assistance to those who may not be as technology versed or why not visit your local library before the start date of your course? Often they have free or cheap sessions on teaching adults how to become more computer literate. PUT A STUDY PLAN INTO ACTION Getting back into education can mean a major change in lifestyle, so it’s a good idea to plan for it. Draw up a timetable jotting down what you need to do every day – this will include the times your classes take place, and other commitments you may have such as picking up the children from school. You then have to decide how you are going to change your daily habits so that you can incorporate enough time for study into your daily routine to achieve your course goals. It may sound simple but re-adjusting to college life can be a challenging task. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A STUPID QUESTION Finally, it may sound simple but if you are unsure of something, ask. The chances are if you have questions, 90 per cent of the class will also have questions, but are too nervous to ask. Always keep in mind that your tutors and lectures are there to help you, not trip you up.
