Hello and welcome to this Bangkok Bound issue of Bed Sheets magazine. The timing for the theme turned out to be very auspicious because Greg Uttsada Panichkul, who we've been dying to get on our cover for ages, just happened to be in town before his trip to LA to see his folks. Utt took a few hours out of his manic schedule to have his picture taken at Bed and give us an interview. The former MTV Asia VJ shed some light on how he became a household name across the region but managed to keep his feet firmly on the ground and remain such a level-headed fellow. He also filled us in on life after MTV. For our Bed Hopping review, we were surrounded by colonial splendour at Bangkok' new Cabochon Hotel. Plus we caught up with the man who puts the moves in Bed Supperclub's spectacular shows, the very talented choreographer Jitti Chompee. With the annual monsoon poised to let rip and give us all a good drenching, our 'Sniff This' columnist Victoria Kirkham devised some rainy season remedies to help us sail through the stormy weather. And, as always, we've also got the word on the some of the essential events that Bed Suppperclub has lined up for you over the next two months. What's a good treatment to get rid of stubborn fat?

When we talk about losing fat permanently, we're not talking about cellulite, massage or infra-red saunas. Neither are we talking about losing weight. What we're talking about is losing fat accumulation permanently. Fat accumulation happens to both men and women. For women, fat usually gets accumulated around the waist, hips and bra strap, and becomes more prevalent and more stubborn with age.

Since cellulite machines are not permanent, for non-invasive permanent solutions there's the option of using the 'Zeltiq Cryolypolysis' machine which effectively kills fat cells at temperatures above freezing without affecting the surrounding tissue. However, the downside is it takes approximately two to four months to see results. 'Zerona' is a permanent solution for the removal of unwanted fat deposits but you'll need to have more treatments than 'Zeltiq'. Why is 'Body Tite' a better version of liposuction?

As a dermatologist, I actually love this new technology, because it's very beneficial for patients who have skin laxity but do not want an additional procedure. Instead of using laser liposuction or ultrasound 'VASER' which just goes in and sucks out the fat cells, 'Body Tite' or Radio-Frequency Assisted Lipo Tightening uses RF technology to go in and melt the fat, before removing it and tightening the skin.

Radio frequencies also have a very heavy coagulation effect, so you don't have as much bruising as laser. Although many consider laser to be one of the better liposuction techniques, this procedure has an even greater 'wow' factor , because pre-melting the fat, makes the removal process less traumatic and greatly reduces post-procedural pain, swelling and discomfort. But, as I said previously, the best feature of this machine is its ability to perform liposuction and tighten the skin at the same time. Unlike all existing laser liposuction and 'Ultersound VASER' technologies that don't help tighten the skin; 'Body Tite' is designed to tighten even the top layer of the skin often with a soft tissue contraction of up to 40%. So what side-effects and downtime does 'Body Tite' involve? Usually the procedure takes a couple of hours and downtime depends on the extent of the treatment and how strong a patient is. Afterwards most people experience a very slight tenderness and soreness in the area. Also, because it's a walk-in procedure, one can go home the same day and avoid costs associated with overnight stays.

Unlike most dancers, I was somewhat of a late starter. I was 19 years old and had recently graduated from Chulalongkorn University with a degree in chemical engineering when I caught a rehearsal and mesmerising live performance by the Italian dance company Alterballeto. From that moment on, I was hooked and knew I wanted to be a professional dancer, so I quit my master’s degree to follow my dream. I quickly realised that although dance can be very challenging, it’s also a great medium to express facets of one’s personality, thoughts and passions without words. Also, because one spends a lot of time working alone, you get the chance to escape into your world and explore other aspects of your character.

The French ballet dancer Sylvie Guillem and Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui really inspire me; it’s hard to put into words the emotions they evoke when I watch them. But hand on heart I must say that it’s Pina Bausch who inspires me as a choreographer. I learnt so much after seeing her works such as ‘Vollmand’, ‘Cafe Muller’, ‘Rite of Spring’, ‘Nefes’ and ‘Sweet Mambo’. Her work encompasses so much more than just dance and technique; it’s loaded with metaphors, inexplicable strangeness-aggression is unleashed and weirdness is transformed into ravishing beauty.

It’s been quite a challenging task trying to transform the performing arts scene here in Bangkok but we are still struggling to make it hapI’ve danced my way around the pen. I have a very diverse team of dancers from very varied backgrounds in my troupe so they express themselves in very different ways. This enables and encourages me to adapt the performances accordingly. My performers are also a major source of inspiration for me and often help me expand my ideas. I must admit that I also learn a lot from them too. The performances I’ve staged at Bed Supperclub include: the ‘Circus Electicus’ show; a modern adaptation of Khon entitled ‘The Invisible World’; ‘ Fire within’ tango pieces; ‘Carmenburi’

inspired by the Opera Carmen; ’In Bed with Pina’ a tribute performance to Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal; ‘Party Animals; and a dance inspired by Jean Genet’s experimental short film ‘Un Chant d’Amour’. For future performances I would love to do my own interpretation of ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ and something inspired by the band ‘Antony and the Johnsons’.

Londons' Central St. Martins College of Art and Design hosts the 'Fit' exhibition; a collection of contributions from leading contemporary graphic designers, working on a theoretical exercise to produce posters inspired by the 2012 Olympic Games. Put together by Jonathan Barnbrook and Vaughan Oliver,

the exhibition exists as an extension to the resentment felt by the London design community at the lack of inclusivity shown towards them by the games' organisers. Rainy season can be beautiful, dramatic and fun but we all know how out of hand the dampness can get. It can invade the body causing lassitude, bloating and skin irritations. Water retention, oedema or puffiness of the limbs, belly and face can also be caused by serious diseases, medication, lack of motion for example after flying, hormonal imbalances, stress and allergies. Different oils and foods function in a variety of ways to help clear fluids: Diuretics draw excess fluid from tissue and secrete them via the kidneys as urine. THE BRIEF WAS SIMPLE :

to create a lamp that would illuminate a dining table without dragging an electrical cord across it or drilling holes in the ceiling. The result is one of the most iconic lamps ever designed that was destined to become part of the norm in modern design. What people often overlook is the ingenuity the two brothers possessed and how they 54

combined functionality, practicality and beauty in such an expressive and unique way. Take for instance the block of marble, sculpted with such minimalism that even Donald Judd or Sol Lewitt couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have done so more elegantly. The hole through the block was designed to allow a broomstick be inserted by two men to facilitate the carrying of the lamp. A broom and rare stone, oh yeah.

bizarre and poetical performance is not at Bed Supperclub, although it meets all the criteria: it is white, it calls for audience participation and it is an experience that invovles all the senses. This performance is called ‘La Cura’ and was commissioned by NIVEA during the Milan Salone del Mobile 2012. The intention of the designer, Faye Toogood, was to create a “a hospital for the senses where visitors are invited to rebalance through a series of intimate performances”. Mysterious caretakers would present visitors a ball of white clay to mould and shape into something that reflects their own individual expression and mood. The sculpted pieces of clay would then be exhibitsed as a collective piece of art. Visitors were given an cordial concocted by food designers Arabeschi di latte. The soothing soundscaping was by Kite & Laslett.

Over the years, the fair, with its growing media exposure, has become the alternative platform of expressions for massconsumption brands that wish to reinforce their values to a niche audience in a more relaxed and direct manner by blurring the divide between installation art, branding and design.

Why do you only make instrumentals? Mark and I have always been big fans of film soundtracks. In fact that seems to be a common thread with all of us. Artsts like Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter, etc. I wanted to try and do something that was essentially lyrical, but without the dominance of the written word. The Moongoose sound is the sound of every record I’ve loved, What happened with Space? I think personally that Space just ran every book I’ve read and every film I its natural course. Bands have a shelf have seen, re-imagined and placed in the context of a live band. life and we reached ours. An innovative new wave of inspired music is resonating from Britain’s Merseyside scene courtesy of David ‘ Yorkie’ Palmer’s new band MOONGOOSE. Britpop fans will recognise Yorkie from his former band, Space. Bed S Magazine spoke to the former Space bass player and producer about his new project.

Tell us more about the Moongoose line up. The band is a shape-shifting entity with a solid core. I’m at the helm; I do all the writing and I play bass and keyboards. Mark Jordan, supplies the visuals (so is, in effect, our singer), Paul Cavanagh and Alex Griffiths play guitar and Daniel Spiers is on drums. We also, constantly get requests from people who want to be involved. There’s something about the way we work and the creative freedom it gives that outsiders find attractive.

We’ve heard that your live shows are quite a departure from the norm. We try and make the visuals as prominent as possible, as the images complement the music without forcing a fixed narrative on the audience. We are also quite particular about the type of venues we perform at: rock clubs don't suit our live format. People have too many preconceived ideas about how a band should present itself.

Does your video artist Mark Jordan interpret the songs himself or do you give him direction? Ninety five percent of the time Mark is at liberty to do whatever he feels. The way we work musically is that I give everybody an unfinished version of a particular tune and ask for their contributions. I don’t direct what they do. I may edit it later to suit what I have in mind but it is entirely their own interpretation. This also applies to the videos.

Born in 1973, Utt was brought up in California but contrary to popular belief, he is of pure Thai-Chinese descent. Raised on a diet of ‘American Pie’, Utt’s parents were concerned their son was becoming a bit of a tearaway and too ‘Americanised’, so at the age of 17 they sent him to Thailand in the hope that it would rekindle the Asian elements of his identity.

He now admits that they were right:

‘I soon discovered subtleties embedded in Thai culture that helped me lose my initial naive arrogance over all things Asian and also develop a more modest and humble approach to life.’

Utt arrived in Thailand before the dawn of today’s digital age so the culture shock he experienced was quite extreme but it also allowed to him to process his observations from an objective viewpoint and apply a more oblique perspective when commentating on things that are often taken for granted in Asia. This, coupled with his mischievous sense of humour, made him a perfect candidate for a VJ.

After landing a job at local Thai TV station, Smile TV, UTT was soon snapped up by MTV Singapore.

‘’It was my home for 14 years. MTV Asia introduced me to the regional market and I gained tremendous experience working with them. It was a dream come true being there.’’ Utt also developed a passion for acting and was cast as an HIV-positive commercial sex worker in the critically acclaimed Thai drama, ‘Song Klam Doag Rak’. The series received an award during World AIDS Day 2007 for its realistic portrayal of the AIDS problem facing Thailand and its inspiring message of hope:

“Acting really allowed me to show my more serious side, plus, because many MTV viewers were teenagers it provided the perfect opportunity to educate them about the social issues involved in HIV/AIDS.”

He now admits that they were right:

“When one of my close friends found out that I intended to ordain as a monk for a few weeks he expressed real concern that I may find the way of life suited me too well and not leave the monkhood. I actually really understood his concern but it was something that I felt I just had to do for my parents and for myself. It really did teach me a lot more about myself.’’ Utt is now focussing his time on an artist management company. His artists include Hwa Hwa from the China Dolls, model Taya Rogers and his MTV colleague Sonia Couling.

“I strongly believe that the invaluable lessons I’ve learnt from my many years in the business will prove very useful in taking care of the artists that I’m looking after.’’ Is there anything that you can’t eat?

I didn’t know that you guys had a restaurant. I thought that you were a club, I didn’t realise you had a restaurant too. Yes since we first opened 10 years ago this is still the biggest misconception that people have about us. We’ve always had the restaurant and to complement the fine dining on offer, we’ve staged some extraordinary performances by a very diverse cast of dancers, actors and artists but unfortunately the restaurant all too often basks in the shade of the much more boisterous clubbin’ events at Bed.

Can you tell me a little bit about your menu? We describe our cuisine as modern eclectic. Although in the beginning we only offered a restricted set menu, in recent years we’ve made this much more flexible. In addition to à la carte options, we also offer multiple set menus, later dining hours, and a much larger menu. Why do I need an ID? Why are you so strict? From the Foreign and Commonwealth website here in Thailand: ‘By law, you must carry your passport with you at all times in Thailand.’ Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport. Although this is rare, because we are a very high profile venue, the local authorities do keep a very close eye on us. So we ask guests to carry an official, government issued ID – a good copy of your passport is acceptable.

What time do you close? On most nights, we are open until 2 am. However, with local approval, our busier nights usually remain open until 3 am (at least at the time of this printing). How do I receive a Bed World card? Our Bed World card is given to strictly through word of mouth to those who have shown incredible loyalty over the years. As of late, we are granting Bed World cards only to guests that are repeat diners in the restaurant. May I book a hen' party, birthday party, office party, corporate party at Bed? Yes, of course.
