Hello and welcome to this the Britain Bound issue of Bed Sheets Magazine. We were tickled pink when Britain’s leading fetish brand Westward Bound agreed to do our cover and had to reach for the smelling salts when our favourite band S.C.U.M said yes to an interview. Our much-loved fashion designer Sorapol just happened to be doing a fashion show for the closing of London Fashion Week so we nipped down to shoot his extraordinary new collection and the cream of the capital’s fashionistas. London club kid, the delectable Daniel Lismore, and NYC’s legendary Larry Tee gave us a close up peek at their outrageous club night Shabba Dabba Da for our One Night In feature. And I rolled up my sleeves to dish the dirt on fluoride and show you how to make a bizarre but very healthy way to keep your gnashers clean and sparkling. The Circular Rotunda Bar adjacent to the main restaurant, is great for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles. What’s in the neighbourhood? The hotel is located on the corner of The Aldwych and Wellington Street, adjacent to the Novello Theatre and opposite the London Transport Museum. To its fans, fluoride added to tapwater is one of the most effective ways of achieving dental health and provides poorer children’s teeth a chance to sparkle like those of their more privileged counterparts.

At best, the jury is out, but despite the uncertainty surrounding its safety, finding toothpaste that’s fluoride free is very difficult, however making your own is incredibly easy.

To opponents and sceptics it is forced, mass medication, the benefits of which may pale in comparison to the uncertain consequences – which are said to include cancer, cot death, eczema, infertility and Down's Syndrome. Health officials in countries that place fluoride in tap water maintain it can help dental health by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to tooth decay. They also assert that it reduces the amount of acid that the bacteria on your teeth produce. 22

However, when fluoridation was halted in parts of Finland, East Germany, Cuba and Canada, tooth decay actually decreased. The first ever lawsuits against the US 's atomic bomb programme, the Manhattan Project, concerned fluoride, not radiation. Another alarming fact is that the first health tests for fluoride were designed to establish how much industry could afford to release into the environment without damaging human health. So one thing that we definitely do know is that fluoride is toxic – in fact it’s so toxic, that in 1984, the makers of Colgate, Procter & Gamble, reportedly admitted that a small tube of their toothpaste "theoretically at least, contains enough fluoride to kill a small child."

Here’s a recipe for chocolate toothpaste which may sound silly but in actual fact research done by Tulane University supports claims that cacao fights cavities, hardens tooth enamel, and helps keep teeth and gums healthy. Its benefits, studies say, are very similar to that of fluoride. Of course if the idea of cleaning your teeth with chocolateflavoured paste sounds as crazy as a box of frogs in party hats you could replace the cacao with mint, wild fennel, clove or spearmint.

CHOCOLATE TOOTHPASTE 3 tablespoons organic coconut oil ½ tablespoon bicarbonate of soda ½ tablespoon bentonite clay ( if you cant find this add more bicarbonate of soda 1½ dessertspoons 3% hydrogen peroxide 1-2 dessertspoons organic cacao 1 teaspoon stevia ( this will sweeten the toothpaste) or a few drops of alcohol free vanilla essence

*note: The paste will stay fresh and safe because the coconut oil and hydrogen peroxide have anti-bacterial and anti-fungi properties.

How fast or slow does the hand age in comparison to the face? Usually it’s the face that ages faster, particularly the under-eye area, because it’s more often exposed to the sun. However, if your work involves outdoor events then your hands are likely to age equally fast. There are three aging signs you’re commonly going to see on the hands; the change in the pigmentations, fine wrinkles and volume loss because of which the hands get really thin and appear old.

REVE ALING Y OUR AGE? Are your hands revealing your age? For most of us, our main focus is the face, be it in our daily facial regimen or the treatments we undergo to maintain youthful looks. But many of us often ignore our hands, even though we use them to do a multitude of things, including applying cosmetics and creams to our faces. Ironically, hands are one of the earliest age-telling features of our bodies. How can we delay the process? Pigmentation and wrinkles can be attributed to the sun. The more you are exposed to the sun, the more you lose collagen and develop pigmentation. So to reduce the occurrence of pigmentation and wrinkles, just like for the face, you’ll need to avoid the sun and apply lots of sunscreen. If your skin is dry, rub a bit of hand cream whenever you remember to. We lose moisture from the hands every time we wash them, so it’s important to get into the habit of applying hand cream. Cosmetically, you can also get laser treatment to stimulate collagen and get rid of freckles on the hand. Thermage also works well to tighten the skin which can be used to prevent, and treat, sagging skin.

If my hands already look wrinkled and slim, what should I do? For pigmentation, we can use laser to burn off the pigment. For the superficial upper layer wrinkles, laser rejuvenation or sublative collagen stimulation laser can be used and accompanied with skin tightening laser like Thermage. For mid-level of the dermis we can use the newest technology, radio frequency needle, which goes deep into the skin to stimulate and firm it up. Unlike the face, you don’t really need to work on the deep skin layer of the hands. To treat volume loss on the hands, we can use fillers. We commonly use hyaluronic aicd as it is the safest filler and it is reversible. The only disadvantage though, is it doesn’t last very long, approximately six months to a year. However, other longerlasting fillers are not as safe and can result in lumps and bumps. New York based artist Brian Donnelly aka KAWS is one of those individuals that stand at the confluence of art, fashion and stardom because his work expresses something so contemporary that it not only happens in multiple forms and in multiple situations, but is also appropriated by other contemporary culture contributors. A graffiti artist, illustrator, toymaker, sculptor and painter, Donnelly admits he is first and foremost a painter. The other activities, including merchandiser (with his Original Fake brand), are more to broaden his reach with other audiences. Inspired by past Pop art masters such as Claes Oldenburg and Tom Wesselmann, Donnelly also found affinities with his contemporaries such as Nigo, founder of Bathing Ape clothing line. It was through Nigo that, Donnelly caught the attraction of music producer Pharell Williams, for whom KAWS is the epitome of modern pop art.

Since have released hits featuring Afrojack, Princess Superstar, Santigold, Steve Aoki, Perez Hilton, Shontelle and Rupaul, you can get a good idea what a night of that might sound like.

But we have amazing guest DJs like the Boy London/Long X DJ team, supermodel Luke Worrall, London's ground-breaker Buster Bennett, and others. Who should I look out for? OMG, everyone has popped into the night including model Jourdan Dunn, i-D writer Adam Ant, Steve Strange, queen Princess Julia, Jodie Harsh, and Boy George to name a few. What else should we know? Brixton Market, a large, vibrant affair dating back to 1870 and encompassing three quaint arcades from the 20s and 30s absolutely stinks in places - mainly of salt fish on the Caribbean and African produce stalls. It’s also a great place to eat everything from Colombian food to organic sourdough Neapolitan Pizza. While you’re there, if you can find the health food shop further up Atlantic Road, I recommend the Amphora Aromatic essential oils they stock, which are cheap but good quality. There are plenty of other ‘smelly’ markets in London but Brixton’s is having a resurgence at the moment so is particularly lively and interesting. 38

Perfumers and Apothecaries : There are many notable establishments to be found around London selling herbs, lotions and potions, one of the oldest being Baldwin’s on the Walworth Road. Fragrant and nostalgic, here you will find advice, natural remedies, essential oils, and all the base ingredients you need to make your own soaps, creams and ointments. Only slightly, newer at 137 years old, is Geo F Trumper where you can sniff a large range of colognes, marvel at men’s grooming paraphernalia, and even attend a shaving school. Cheeses : When a man is bored of cheese… London is a brilliant place to try and buy cheese. Don’t feel too shy to ask to try a sliver and enquire about, or research, what to eat the cheese with or on. Paxton and Whitfield is London’s oldest cheesemonger and holds many royal warrants. Cheeses are matured in the underground cellar of their shop in Jermyn Street. La Fromagerie has walk-in cheese rooms and tasting cafes in Marylebone and Highbury where you can buy various platters of five specially chosen cheeses and order from a list of paired wines. Neal’s Yard Dairy is another wonderful London cheese business with shops in Covent Garden and Borough market. It was set up in the 70s along with Neal’s Yard Remedies and the Monmouth coffee house. But let’s not start on the subject of coffee…

David Bowie released ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ in 1972. The concept album is based on the story of a rock star from outer space. Ziggy is the human manifestation of an alien being who is attempting to present humanity with a message of hope in the last five years of its existence. The Album was a major factor in Bowies becoming one of the world's best known rock stars. The cover was shot in January 1972, outside furriers "K. West" at 23 Heddon Street, London, with orange haired Bowie clad in a green jumpsuit, resting his foot on a step.

Apparently, Brian Ward the photographer was shooting the band in a makeshift photographic studio above the street and suggested they do some outdoor shots. The other band members thought it was too cold and declined to join Bowie for the picture so he appeared alone on the cover. The post office in the background (now "The Living Room, W1" bar) was the site of London's first nightclub, The Cave of the Golden Calf, which opened in 1912. As part of street renovations, in April 1997 a red phonebox was returned to the street, replacing a modern blue phonebox, which in turn had replaced the original phonebox featured on the rear cover.

Earlier this year a plaque was unveiled to mark the site of the cover shot.

PRA CHASERI What line of work are you in? I work mainly in marketing. I started my marketing company, Savant Marketing Solutions, a few years ago while I was still in grad school. I've also launched other businesses with friends including an import business for plastic products (Check out our cool stuff at www.facebook. com/keterthailand). What’s your favourite noise? The sound of ocean waves crashing on the beach in front of a beautiful villa. Because hopefully this would mean I'm vacationing on a remote island. What’s your least favourite noise? The sound of a spoon grating over a ceramic plate and the sound of people biting down on eating utensils. Those noises give me the chills. If we gave you the chance to change anything, what would you change? The fact that so many of the world’s cultures are fading so quickly. Each generation should preserve and share their culture with the next generation. Imagine a world without cultures, where everyone wore the same style of clothing, ate the same food and had the same way of thinking, how dull would that be! What turns you on creatively? Silence, long drives, good conversation, book stores and amusement parks. When have you never been so wrong? Several times, but you learn from life's mistakes, right? Describe your best night out in three words? It would definitely have to be a combination of good people, music and conversation. Ultimately, it's always best when you share things with the right people. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? Krapaow lad khao khai dao (chicken with basil over rice with one egg sunny-side up). Satisfaction guaranteed every time! What’s Thailand’s best kept secret? Probably, the fact that there are more undiscovered spots here than anywhere else on the planet. 42

S.C.U.M are a South-East London based post-punk/art rock group. They take their name from Valerie Solanas' misandrous screed, SCUM Manifesto.

Your name is a reference to the SCUM Manifesto by the radical feminist who shot Warhol, Valerie Solanas. What inspired you to choose it? It's an extreme manifesto, and an interesting glitch in popular culture. Valerie Solanas' only regret about shooting Andy Warhol was that she didn't kill him. The world where it came from was fascinating for us, plus SCUM without dots was taken. You've said in interviews that you don't make music about social issues, so what do you write about? Escaping social issues. Speaking about the songwriting process, can you shed some light on how you create your music? It’s a lot to do with where we are and where we want to be. Pressure usually creates the best results for us. Portishead picked you to perform at the 'All Tomorrow's Parties' Festival and Throbbing Gristle's Chris & Cosy remixed a single for you. Do you have any other heroes that you would like to work with? Brian Eno is a big inspiration on the music we make. Working with him would be a dream for us. Ennio Morricone doing a string arrangement for us would make us very happy campers. Do you prefer playing live or studio work? Studio work always presents new ways of writing and creating which is what really excites us as a band. Again Into Eyes, S.C.U.M album

You've played all over Europe and also Japan. Is there any show that stands out from the rest? We played the Venice Biennale a few years ago with artists Tim and Sue in an amazing courtyard off the canal. Hugely surreal, and probably the most excited I've ever been playing a show. All the power cut out midway through our last song and Mel carried on playing for half a minute then slowly the power came back on and we rejoined her, it had an amazing feeling about the whole thing. Tom and our manager got lost and slept on a boat and the rest of us ending up camping out with some travellers. What are your plans for the rest of 2012? Writing parts for our new album, working on a new series of mixes of our favourite music which come out monthly dictated by the signs of the zodiac. We're playing a lot of European shows and festivals. Any chance we can catch you live in Thailand soon? It would be a dream for us to write and record a Bangkok Signal to be part of our ‘SIGNALS’ series and to play out there would be amazing but we have no plans as of yet. Finally .. Is there anything that you can't eat? Tom’s vegetarian and that's about it; we eat almost anything.

The name Westward Bound was a play with words when I moved from London to the West of England to set up a Bed, Breakfast and Dungeon hire facility way back in 1987. The Westward being geographic and the Bound as it says on the tin – Westward Bound. I was already heavily involved with the world as one of the original London fetish club promoters running Der Putsch since 1983. The dungeon hire SM side became internationally known with write ups across the globe and numerous television appearances. By 1992 I decided to build on the brand strength and set up a mail order business – the modern Westward Bound was born. From the start I looked at the world as a market and in the first year was delighted to be selling thigh boots to Moscow and wrist cuffs to The Orkney Islands. I have always been a “global citizen” and never restricted myself to borders. As a teenager I hung around the London based punk scene and emerging London Club Scene that infamously became know as the New Romantics. Spinning from this I was involved with the first London Fetish Clubs in 1983 and inspired by my own sense of adventure created the Bed, Breakfast and Dungeon concept by 1987. My teenage years were greatly influenced by the beauty of creation. I was a protégée of Kings Road Punk 1976/77, the London scene was very much a melting pot for young design and style. Vivienne Westwood was our high priestess and we all kicked around on a never ending swirl of guest lists and private parties. The years rolled by and I recall being invited along to the first London Fashion week at Olympia and being rather bored with the event turned my churlish back on fashion to immerse my head in the fetish scene. This was before the scene had such a fashion core. I view it as a wonderful irony that nearly three decades later my roots in the world of London’s fashion and clubbing underground have been turned to such advantage that I end up heading the world’s leading latex-style brand; I prefer the terminology of style rather than fashion. All semantics but conveys a lasting quality, that is why I coined the term “Desire-Couture” for Westward Bound – sums us up neatly.

Back in the eighties latex clothing designers were few in number, the leading name being my dear friend Daniel James whose excellent black latex dresses set the tone along with photographic collaborations with the late Bob Carlos Clarke. Daniel and both dated the same Russian Princess back in 1978 and this was how we met. She is long gone, but we remained lifelong friends.

The market for fetish wear was small and London based with colours focussed on a narrow band of black or red. It was much more a world entwined with the SM scene. The pre-internet world had massive restrictions on access to information and it was difficult to break into wider public view, with the one exception of the pop world. I recall being really thrilled when Martin Gore of Depeche Mode wore one of my early T-shirts on a prime British TV programme Top of The Pops . I recall him checking with me that I had seen it. I thought that was very sweet of him. Back in the eighties we were synonymous with the whole London pop and fashion world. Fun but I personally needed more excitement, Martin was lovely but most pop stars are dull and self-important. Celebrity never was my game and I get easily bored. By 1987 my mind and body had moved away into the world of dungeons which lasted until the mid-nineties when I decided to start a family with my wife Sarah, we felt that the world we were living in would be used against us once we had children. The brain kicked into a more commercial level of acceptance. Design and style came to the fore and we closed the dungeon to concentrate our heads into fetish clothing, retail by 1995 and the internet by 1997; our first son Cameron being born the same year. We always enjoy the fun of human communication and access to information. Social networking can be utilised to great advantage on these levels. With very active minds we have made an effort to always be ahead of the curve. We take a personal pride in the ongoing creative; it is part of our life blood. Sarah had a childhood dream of being a clothing designer and it was really fun developing her own world to suit. Sarah draws a design in the air with her fingers, burns it into her mind and works directly with our cutter and makers to produce the most awesome designs. For the Femme-A-Licious Collection 2012 the first three conceptions were sketched, mentally-burnt, cut and made in one morning. Pure genius with 84 designs coming through in three months. It is a no-nonsense approach that has left the rest of the fetish fashion world standing. We have a collection of over 2,000 designs to pull from. Our reputation and eminence within the world of fetish fashion has been earned by genuine ability and customer respect. These are the true hallmarks of a great long term brand and we are simply stunned by how many people wish to collaborate and work directly with us. Our clothing models include Bianca Beauchamp, Jade Vixen, Ophelia Overdose, Morgana, Sister Sinister, Ulorin Vex and the greats in our industry. It is a very beautiful world we inhabit. Facebook and the whole explosion in social media have been very interesting for us, we put up daily images of models wearing our clothing that have been shot around the world and this attracts a growing fan base. Recently we have worked with the fantastic Sharon Needles in America. Sharon was the winner of this year’s RuPaul Drag Race and has a massive cult following. She kindly informed us that she had been a fan of Westward Bound for years and was thrilled to be working with us. We were similarly delighted and simply love her; we found the abstract design-consultation phone call at silly o’clock in the morning fun and warming. She was fresh from her night out in Los Angeles.

Sharon’s agent contacted us on the Friday and on Monday Sarah was in our design studio at 05.00. By 13.00 the courier collected two designed outfits with matching accessories to ship to the USA. On Thursday one of these was worn by Sharon on a Hollywood red carpet TV event. Was great fun watching the live stream back in the UK. Design style and influences are everywhere, one of the tricks is to always have your mind open and ready to absorb. We have just designed a dress for Sharon and for our own Halloween Party artwork to be worn by Ophelia Overdose in Germany. This dress is based upon our visit to the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo in Sicily, the remains of the dead being dressed in contemporary fashions of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; great source material. We did absorb more than a few ideas and it made a change from the V&A. This dress is very much a one-off design and features a transparent latex coffin-style front panel with cameo neck and latex bone detailing – it is totally fabulous! We will leave the dead alone, for now. In glorious contrast, our Femme-A-Licious Collection was all about life. We revisited 19th century fashions and brought them to back to life with sexy adaptations, bright colours, vitality and beauty. Frills, bows and overtly girly styling were the mantras and a collection which really has made a benchmark in fetish fashion and Westward Bound. We launched the collection in Montreal, Canada as our market has really now grown way beyond our European boundaries. It is really wonderful to be asked to be interviewed by you in the prestigious Bed Sheets magazine. I guess it shows how our influence has spread although we would advise customers in Thailand and the region to only wear latex in an air-conditioned environment. *wink* We are currently finishing our 2013 collection and are introducing three new colours for the purpose. Details are very much under wraps at the moment; suffice to say they are built upon the very strong foundations of our previous Bordelle-L-Amour and Femme-A-Licious Collections. Girly and beauty are in vogue in our world.

I didn’t know that you guys had a restaurant. I thought that you were only a club. Yup, 10 years later, this is still the biggest misconception that we have. Since the beginning (2002) we have always had the restaurant, but it often and unfortunately, stands in the shadow of the clubbing aspect. We are currently offering more special dinners (wine dinners, chocolate dinners, etc), in an on-going effort to push the visibility of the restaurant. In addition, you can view all of our restaurant reviews on Trip Advisor. We have been ranked as high as #11 out of over 1000 restaurants in Bangkok.

How’s business? Good. Very good. We’ve been very blessed. Yes, Thailand has had some rough challenges in the past few years including the recent floods, but we have been very fortunate to miss the most brutal parts of these challenges.
