When Bed Supperclub first opened its doors 10 years ago, tweets were something birds did, Facebook was Myspace, phones could barely fit in pockets, the nearest thing to WiFi was the radio stations that we would play in our cars, and the idea that a Bangkok club could get in DJ Mag’s ‘Best 50 Clubs in the World’ seemed as ridiculous as the notion that an African-American could become president of the USA. Yet a decade later and the British DJ Magazine included Bed Supperclub in its top 50 club-list and incumbent President Barack Obama is running for a second and final term in the November 2012 American election. We decided to hitch a ride on the celebrations for Bed’s first decade and look back at some of the gorgeous stars who graced our covers over the last few years.

We're also dug deep into our archives and put together a selection of some of the beautiful people who appeared in our ‘Bed Fellows’ pages and teased our taste buds with some scrumptious shots of the dishes that were served in Bed over the last 10 years. Our DJs delved into their music collections and revisited some of the songs that had you waving your hands in the air, and gave their take on the tracks that will be filling dancefloors in the next few months. Our new GM Marcel Jacquat as he shared stories about the many paths that eventually led him to Bed Supperclub. Plus we’ve also got the buzz on some of the essential events that Bed Suppperclub has lined up for you over the next two months.

TATTO O YOU!
[ b y PAU L H A M P S H I RE ]
..........................................................................................................................................
Getting a great tattoo shouldn’t be your only concern when choosing a tattooist. There are also health issues and other factors that you need to consider before getting inked. Here are a few pointers so you don’t leave the studio with a tattoo that’s scarred you for life. The tattoo procedure involves super sharp needles that move at very fast speeds penetrating the outer layers of the skin and injecting dots of ink into the third layer to create the image of the design in the skin. It’s actually not as painful as it sounds but precautions must be taken because if the equipment used is contaminated, you could contract a myriad of nasty diseases, such as syphilis, staph, tuberculosis, hepatitis and of course, HIV. However if your tattooist if responsible, the process will be risk-free.
Don’t walk into a studio and choose a design from the wall or the artist’s book. Spend time personalising your design and think carefully where on your body you want to have it. Discuss size and colour with your artist and listen to what they recommend as they’re going to have some valuable insights. Don’t haggle too much over the price, you're paying for the artist's time and expertise, plus you don’t really want a moody tattooist marking you for life. Finally, do make sure that you fully understand and follow the aftercare instructions that your tattooist provides you with as there’s still an infection risk and the quality of your tattoo depends on it. The early care shown to newly tattooed skin is paramount to how that tattoo will look in years to come.
For more on getting inked in Bangkok The studio should be spotless much like a medical facility. The see #67 in Bed Supperclub’s book of 99 tattooist should put on a new pair experiences to do in 2012 of disposable gloves before setting up tubes, needles and ink supplies. The new needle and machine barrel should come from a sealed sterile envelope. The barrel is just as likely to be contaminated as the needle so make sure it’s been autoclaved. Don’t be afraid to question the tattooist about their sterilisation procedures. Also be certain you see your tattooist pour a new ink supply into a new disposable container.
if your tattooist is responsible, the process will be risk-free.

Where’s the line between normal hair loss and the indication of another issue? It’s normal to lose hair through our daily hair-care regime but what amount is normal and how much is excessive varies from person to person. Losing 150 strands of hair may be normal for one person, but could be considered excessive for another; it really depends on how dense your hair is. But just to give you a rough guideline, on average, people lose about 50 to 100 hairs from their head daily. The best way to determine the extent of your hair loss is to keep an eye on how much you are losing at regular intervals and do comparisons. If it stays the same then there’s no cause for concern. The lost hairs get replaced and grow back in the same follicle on your head. If you're losing more and more hair, then something might be wrong.

INTERVIEW BED SUPPERCLUB’S NEW
G E NER A L MAN AGER
MARCEL JACQUAT Marcel grew up at the foot of the Jura Mountains in the heart of Switzerland’s Mittelland region in a small town called Biel, which is famous for watch making. He spent his vacations visiting relatives in Mexico and travelling around South America. In his late teens he travelled through Singapore and Malaysia before finally arriving in Thailand. After a long bus journey he arrived in Phuket late at night and couldn’t find anywhere to stay until a friendly family let him sleep in their restaurant. That first taste of true Thai hospitality made a lasting impression on the 17 year old and years later he remembers it with heart-warming gratitude. Thailand became Marcel’s first stop on his subsequent visits to Asia, which also took in places like India and Nepal. He felt like he was coming home even before he moved here. Switzerland was too calm and too conservative.

The yearning to move to Thailand prompted his decision to take his first full-time job in the travel industry. Employed by a Swiss tour operator as a tour guide, he travelled the world and fuelled his passion to soak up diverse cultures and customs. Working only during high-season meant Marcel could do things like learning martial arts in Hong Kong and exploring the Amazon jungle.
When the Amari Group took over the management of Tower Records, Marcel was the obvious choice to head the team. He restructured the company and turned it around. Marcel diversified the brand and also oversaw the rebranding from Tower Records to CD Warehouse. As physical CD sales began to drop dramatically he shifted the company into more of a lifestyle store.
After a few years working as a tour operator and being constantly on the move, but still calling Switzerland his home, the time came to set up permanent roots abroad and call somewhere else ‘home’. During a stint in Bali he had an epiphany and realised the best way to make that happen would be through hotel management. After graduating from a Swiss hotel management school he was offered a position managing a small Si Racha hotel. On reflection Marcel realises that he did jump in at the deep end and was perhaps too inexperienced to take on a job where he was the only foreigner and hadn’t grasped the fundamental differences of working in a Thai environment. That said, it was a baptism by fire and did open the door for his next opportunity which was with the Amari Group.
Eventually the inevitable happened and the Thai market followed the global trend of saying goodbye to discerning CD stores. When the time came for CD Warehouse to close its doors, Marcel decided, like any honourable captain should, to stay on so he could go down with his ship. It was a decision that in retrospect he’s very happy with as it meant he could make sure his staff were looked after and that they could look adversity in the face, go out with a bang and hold one helluva goodbye party!
As well as working at the Amari’s hotels, Marcel was also in charge of their Henry J Beans bar. This provided the perfect platform for him to use his contacts in radio to meet international record companies based in Thailand and stage live shows featuring international and local artists.
28
Marcel decided it was time to once again hit the road and set off on another big adventure. He visited his family in South America and fulfilled a lifelong ambition to visit Peru’s ‘City of the Incas’. After extensive travels around South America he eventually returned to the place that he now calls home Thailand. Marcel’s many career moves and the skills he’s perfected along the way all seem to have led towards his latest position of GM at Bed. So despite his travels to the four corners of the globe, all roads were eventually leading to Bed Supperclub.

.......................................................................................................................................... I confess I haven’t always been ultra vigilant about what goes into my food and cosmetics but the tide is quickly turning against harmful ingredients and I’m being swept along with it to the point of replacing shop-bought products with home-made natural ones. The latest one is deodorant. I actually thought I was using a ‘natural’ crystal deodorant until I started to get telltale yellowing on my clothing – the sign of aluminium in the mix. Aluminium causes the skin cells to swell thus compressing the sweat glands to prevent perspiration and this can cause allergic reactions in some people. As yet no trials conclusively support fears about a cancer or Alzheimer’s connection to aluminium use but staining and possible irritation are enough to make me steer clear. Parabens, used in many deodorants and other cosmetics as preservatives, may disrupt the endocrine (hormonal) system so are also best avoided. To check the safety of your favourite products and learn more, this is a great site http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ .
Here is a very simple recipe The solution is a recipe which for home-made deodorant: takes a little more effort: Mix together two tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate and two tablespoons of either corn flour, tapioca starch or arrowroot, then add six tablespoons of coconut oil. This is your base. Add 20 drops of non-irritant essential oils to this. I recommend a combination of eight drop of geranium, six drops of lavender and six drops of bergamot which are anti-bacterial, fresh-smelling and gentle. The recipe will work well without the essential oils or you may add your own. Store in a small jar and apply by smoothing on a fingertip full. The good thing about this recipe is that it really works. On the other hand it is a little gritty and will separate in warm conditions. Some people are also sensitive to the sodium bicarbonate.

In a small double boiler, mix four tablespoons of coconut or almond oil with one and a half tablespoons of grated beeswax. Remove from the heat and add one tablespoon of shea butter, mango butter or cocoa butter. Next, stir in four teaspoons of clay. I used a fine white Australian clay but you can choose from quite an array of different coloured cosmetic clays. Now you have a basic ointment which you can develop into a balm or nourishing body butter depending on what you add. For a deodorant it can be used plain or you can add the above essential oil blend. A note about the essential oils; they should not be used during pregnancy, and will lose their effectiveness if not stored in an airtight lightproof container. I’d also like to add that while tea tree oil has become very popular for its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties it is a strong skin irritant so probably not the best bet for an underarm concoction.

TH E PEU GEOT ON YX It’s crazy to think that the second largest carmaker based in Europe actually started making coffee mills and bicycles but when Peugeot was first founded in 1810 that’s exactly what it did. Fast forward to 2012 and the French car brand has just unveiled its latest supercar, the Onyx.
36
[ b y PAU L H A M P S H I RE ]
..........................................................................................................................................
Sculpted using unprocessed materials, the Onyx was created by enthusiasts who designed a body that has been hand-finished using pure copper sheet metal, and because it's untreated, the finish will change over the course of time, giving it a new look. Carbon fibre with a black matt finish was used for the remainder of the bodywork panels and the roof was moulded from shatter-resistant plastic. Peugeot Sport stepped in to help develop the chassis from monolithic carbon and a flat carbon fibre floor. The Onyx also has a kinetic energy recovery system, which channels braking energy into lithium ion batteries and then automatically discharges the power on acceleration, boosting the output by an additional 80bhp.
The Onyx's cockpit is constructed from compressed and stretched felt, formed as a one-piece pod to create a 'cocoon' around the occupants. The dash is made from wood produced from recycled newspapers complete with digital screens and aluminium switchgear operating the engine and air-conditioning controls. Altogether it sure looks like a dream drive but don’t start thinking about trading in your own motor just yet because although Peugeot previewed the supercar at this year's Paris Motor Show it hasn’t yet revealed whether or not it plans to bring the Onyx, or something similar, to production.

TUNES T HA T RO CK T H E B ED Our DJs shed light on the songs that had you dancing over the last 10 years at Bed Supperclub and turn you on to tomorrow’s dancefloor fillers.
..........................................................................................................................................
MIKEY MIKE At a special guest DJ spot in September 2009, the highlight of my set was dropping the original version of ‘Plastic Dreams’ by Jaydee in the mix. The dancefloor erupted into a frenzy of ‘Whoahs’ and whistles from the crowd. I got goose bumps because it reminded me of the first clubbin’ wave which took Bangkok by storm in the early 90’s. EDDY FRAMPTON From the sublime 2001 original version to the brilliant 2008 Funkagenda remix, Laurent Garnier’s ‘Man with the Red Face’ has been hailed as the biggest techno track of all time! When I played it and Andy Speener let rip with some live sax the crowd at Bed went berserk. SAINT VINCENT ‘In White Rooms’ by Booka Shade is an epic tune that defined the peak of the ‘minimal’ era and is still a massive crowd pleaser when I include in my sets at Bed. ANDREA BERTRAND One of the most treasured moments at Bed Supperclub was in 2010 when I played Eric Morillo’s ‘Blackwater’ which was the track of the summer in Ibiza and the world’s most discerning dance clubs. DAVID STEWART Back in 2003 when I was hosting a weekly breakbeat night at Bed, one of my choice songs to end the night with was the Stanton Warriors remix of Basement Jaxx’s 'Where's Your Head At'. The track combines the warmth of familiarity with a perfect remix and totally epitomised my night. FRED JUNGO The GA Shake Shake Dub Mix of ‘Easy’ by Groove Armada sums up a decade of dance music at Bed. Back in the day (2002), this track quickly became one of my signature tracks . A classic piano-house track with tremendous tweaks that never fails to get the crowd jumping. TOMMY NORI A few years ago I was really losing all hope in hip-hop and had been playing more and more old school stuff since everything new just seemed so boring. Then suddenly Jay-Z released ‘Empire State of Mind’ and had everyone up and shaking their ass on the dance floor again. DJ ORAWAN ‘Get Out Of My Head’ by Redlight is a bouncy, infectious tune that results in rapture on the dancefloor when I drop it in the mix. Music inspired by UK garage and early 90s clubbing is on the brink of making a massive impact on the electronic dance scene.
DJ MARKY OCTOBER 4th live at Bed The tornado from Sao Paolo returns. FAQ F R E Q U E N T LY A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S
I thought that you were a club, I didn’t realise you had a restaurant too. Yes since we first opened 10 years ago this is still the biggest misconception that people have about us. We’ve always had the restaurant and to complement the fine dining on offer, we’ve staged some extraordinary performances by a very diverse cast of dancers, actors and artists but unfortunately the restaurant all too often basks in the shade of the much more boisterous clubbin’ events at Bed. What time should I arrive for dinner to catch the full show? We suggest you arrive about 20:30 so can settle down and get comfy before the first performance begins.

So what’s happening in the restaurant over the next two months? As well as some intriguing performances by our interactive performers, we’re going to be cooking up some very special dinners and pairing them with a selection of fine wines. We’ve been ranked as high as #11 out of over 1000 restaurants in Bangkok. Check out our restaurant reviews on Trip Advisor to get an unbiased take on what our guests have to say. Can you tell me a little bit about your menu? We describe our cuisine as modern eclectic. Although in the beginning we only offered a restricted set menu, in recent years we’ve made this much more flexible. In addition to à la carte options, we also offer multiple set menus, later dining hours, and a much larger menu. What time do you close? On most nights, we are open until 2 am. However, with local approval, our busier nights usually remain open until 3 am (at least at the time of this printing). How do I receive a Bed World card? Our Bed World card is given strictly through word of mouth to those who have shown incredible loyalty over the years. As of late, we are granting Bed World cards only to guests who are repeat diners in the restaurant.
Why do I need an ID? Why are you so strict? From the Foreign and Commonwealth website here in Thailand: ‘By law, you must carry your passport with you at all times in Thailand.’ Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport. Although this is rare, because we are a very high profile venue, the local authorities do keep a very close eye on us. So we ask guests to carry an official, government issued ID – a good copy of your passport is acceptable. I left something at Bed last night, who should I contact? Email us at info@bedsupperclub and we will get back to you straight away, or call us on 02 651 3537. May I book a hen' party, birthday party, office party, corporate party at Bed? Yes, of course. We offer attractive packages for each of these items plus several more. For more information, please contact orawan@bedsupperclub or visit our website (www. bedsupperclub.com) under “Your Event”. If I wanted more information on what’s going on at Bed, what would you suggest? Please make sure that you follow us on Twitter and on facebook. @bedsupperclub (Twitter) www.facebook. com/bedsupperclubfanpage
