VRŠAC
Following the wine route
Vršac, one of the most beautiful towns in the Banat, is located in the northeastern part of Serbia, i.e. the southeastern part of Vojvodina, at the foot and on the slopes of the Vrac Mountains. The natural reserve Deliblato Sands, also known as the “European Sahara,” occupies a portion of the territory of the municipality of Vršac. It is 84 kilometers northeast of Belgrade, 14 kilometers from the border with Romania, 77 kilometers from Timisoara, the administrative center of western Romania, and 147 kilometers from Novi Sad. Numerous old buildings of various styles, churches, and cultural institutions preserve one of Serbia’s oldest traditions. “City under the Tower” is one of Vojvodina’s oldest. It is the eighth-largest city in the world, with a population of 40,000 people. The area where two different economic areas meet - the plains and the Vršac mountains, have always attracted people to build their habitats there, because the land is suitable for farming, viticulture and cattle breeding, spacious marshes allowed rich fishing, forests full of wild game were ideal hunting grounds. Vršac is primarily a city of important cultural institutions, which, in terms of their funds, scope of activity and importance, exceed its limits and belong to the most important cultural institutions of Serbia. Architectural values represent special historical and cultural monuments. Vršac has preserved individual buildings as well as entire complexes of the surrounding environment, which are beautiful examples of various styles, particularly the Baroque and Art Nouveau eras. The autochthonousness of the facades has been preserved, and their inventive riches have been enhanced, giving the city its unique character. Among these structures are objects with historical, economic, ethnographic, and architectural significance.
