Sremska Mitrovica is the Municipality of Sremska Mitrovica’s administrative center in the District of Srem. It is the largest town in Srem, the District of Srem’s administrative center, and one of the oldest towns in Vojvodina and Serbia. The town is located on the Sava River’s left bank. During the Tetrarchy, the ancient city of Sirmium, which was located on the current territory of Sremska Mitrovica, was the capital of the Roman Empire. It was also referred to as “the glorious mother of all cities.” Sirmium was the birthplace of many Roman emperors. At the intersection of three distinct morphological units—the Plain of Srem, the Plain of Mava, and the foothills of Fruška Gora—Sremska Mitrovica is situated in the northwest of Serbia and the southwest of Vojvodina. The settlement, which has an average elevation of 82 meters, is located at 44 degrees and 58 minutes north latitude and 19 degrees and 36 minutes east longitude. It extends along the south border of the Srem loess terrace and along the Sava River’s alluvial plain. The conurbation of Sremska Mitrovica, Laćarak, and Mačvanska Mitrovica on the left and right banks of the Sava River, respectively, and 23 villages make up the town of Sremska Mitrovica. In the National Park of Fruška Gora near Sremska Mitrovica (Ležimir and Letenka), there are various monasteries in addition to well-liked excursion destinations and recreation areas. Because its river basin near Sremska Mitrovica is ideal for this type of activity, the Sava River offers tremendous potential for river tourism (the town has a modern quay with the possibility for ships to berth, as well as the tidy beach which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Serbia).
