European Capital of Culture 2022

Novi Sad is a city on the Danube in northern Serbia, south of the Pannonian flatland. For three centuries, namely as long as it has been known as Novi Sad / Újvidék/ Neusatz, the city has served as a repository for the diverse and rich cultural heritage of the many nations that call it home.

Material and intangible cultural heritage created over centuries serves as the foundation for an interactive network of scientific and cultural institutions, making Novi Sad today a space of active meeting of cultures and diverse identities. Novi Sad was named European Capital of Culture 2021 and European Youth Capital 2019 in recognition of the creative energy embodied by youth groups and organizations that have contributed to an already identifiable traditional cultural platform.

Novi Sad is a city of museums, galleries, and events, the most well-known of which is the EXIT Music Festival, which has received international acclaim and recognition. Novi Sad, with its urban core and rural surroundings, offers visitors an agenda packed with incredible content. Picnic areas, preserved eco-systems, and the complex of Serbian Orthodox monasteries are located in the vicinity of an urban city core characterized by baroque, neo-renaissance, classicistic, and Bauhaus buildings. The “Salaš” farmsteads, “čarda” taverns, and wine trails on the outskirts of Novi Sad allow visitors to experience the richness of gastronomy and rural traditions.

Novi Sad, as a Danube city, a city of European history and tradition, as well as the Balkans’ endemic hospitality, is an experience you have been missing. The old city core of Novi Sad is comprised of the urban areas of Liberty Square, Zmaj Jovina, and Dunavska (Danube) Street. The Liberty Square is dominated by City Hall and the Roman Catholic Church of the Name of Mary.

The City Hall is a massive Neo-Renaissance structure built in 1894, while the Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Name of Mary was built in Neo-Gothic style between 1893 and 1895. The Liberty Square also houses the following structures: Hotel Vojvodina (1854), Vojvodjanska Banka (1892), and the Roman Catholic Parish Office (1808), Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Mother’s Assumption (1776), and the Synagogue (1909) are all in Novi Sad.
