OLD DISRUPTING THE
JEFF BEZOS DOESN’T NEED AN ALARM CLOCK; HE GOES TO BED AT 1:00 A.M. AND WAKES UP AT 6. HIS MORNING ROUTINE CONSISTS OF RUNNING, SHOWERING, HAVING BREAKFAST AND READING THE NEWS. AT 8:00 A.M. HE ARRIVES AT AMAZON’S HEADQUARTERS IN SEATTLE. Every day he seeks new ways to disrupt how consumers buy and experience goods, services and content. Bezos started Amazon in 1994 and his routine is often the same. However, on the 5th of August his agenda didn’t show a business meeting with one of Amazon’s partners, but a personal meeting at the Washington Post headquarters. Bezos is not your average billionaire. Although his estimated wealth hovers around 25 billion dollars, he doesn’t spend it on blatant luxury. He is part of a relatively new trend within the realities of the super wealthy; they use their wealth to push the boundaries of human technology. Another example is Elon Musk (original founder of PayPal) who wanted a car that didn’t exist, so he started a company, Tesla, to build it. It produced the first fully electric (sports) car to the dismay of traditional car companies in Detroit. Tesla’s success sparked a rush within the traditionalists to increase spending on the development of electric cars. Bezos has similar ethics. As a young 8

child he dreamed of space; therefore, instead of spending part of his wealth on a new yacht, he started a company that develops technology for space exploration called Blue Origin. The step to buy a newspaper company for a billionaire, who is known to be a bit radical, might not be such a strange feat. BUYING ‘OLD MEDIA’ Amazon is a success story coming out of the dot com bubble. It is one of the few Internet companies that started in the mid to late nineties that actually survived both the bubble and the market crash in 2001. From there on Amazon grew and became the biggest online retailer of goods worldwide. They lead in selling hard-copy books and e-books and are one of the leading providers of online content in music, movies and server hosting. They started making their own hardware (e-readers and tablets) and today you can even order your groceries at Amazon. They have next day delivery and are working towards same day delivery. Amazon stock has risen from $50 in 2009 to $300 in 2013. It is safe to say that Bezos is the founder of one of the most successful online businesses of this era. The Washington Post as a business has slowly been spiraling downwards. They are still somewhat profitable, but lose readers and income daily since their peak in 2006. They don’t know

how to make the transition to digital and are hopelessly clinging to the non-existent sanctity of the printed newspaper ad business. Why is both easy and difficult to understand. They have been printing newspapers since 1877 and survived very difficult times. It’s not easy changing a business (model) that has worked for over 120 years. But why do they insist on focusing on printed newspapers when their print ad income dropped from 600 million to 200 million within 5 years? When your income drops this drastically you need to change something around. They tried but failed. It’s painful to see one of the oldest newspapers die slowly, especially a respected and important journalistic paper such as The Washington Post. Bezos role as a savior is not quite clear. He isn’t a fan of media unless he has a new product to show and is known to complain about traditional media, which is actually positive. He isn’t constraint by what newspapers used to be and knows how to build a working online business model. It might trigger the much-needed modernization in the structure and philosophy of a news company. As someone interested in both new business opportunities and failing business models, risk taking is his forte. Still he has stated that he will not be taking an active daily role at the newspaper. His priority is and will be Amazon.com for the foreseeable future. It’s a sensible and logical thing to say that Amazon is thriving as a business. Buying The Washington Post as a nostalgic idealist however would be foolish. Bezos likes to disrupt every market he enters. He didn’t buy a newspaper company as if he were buying a new watch. He has a plan and isn’t ready to share it just yet. But what is his biggest challenge at the newspaper?
10 ICONIC ESTILO
DISRUPTING INTERNALLY Jeff Bezos will have to start by changing the philosophy of treating online news (or blog posts) as a second-class citizen. By the time the newspaper is printed, most news is already old. If you even want to keep a printed newspaper at all, it will have to be in-depth articles guided by how interesting the story is and not daily headlines. Let journalists take their time in constructing these stories. Make the newspaper shorter; society has less time to read daily news. Make sure the core focus is online and breathe social media. This might mean that journalists have to change the way they think about news itself and how it needs to be presented.
The Guardian is a great example. By using the wisdom of the crowd they gather data and use journalists to construct meaning from that data.
Involve your readers in reporting. Don’t get caught in the web of speed over accuracy. In the end being truthful in reporting always wins. Don’t be scared to have a voice instead of just reporting facts; use facts to create meaning from the events that are happening around us. Most importantly, don’t just push the brand name of The Washington Post. Push the names of talented journalists. We often feel more connected to a specific writer with a specific voice than a large corporation pushing their news onto us. Let the journalists live out the brand. Bezos is smart, amazingly smart. He understands the way the Internet has evolved and how our daily lives are affected by its influence.
Amazon has been tracking the habits of consumers since 1994: not only what we buy, but also what we want and look at online. This data makes Bezos the perfect candidate to turn around an old but iconic newspaper.
With both data and intent he could disrupt the old business of newspapers without losing the quality of old-school journalism. It will be interesting to see if and how The Washington Post could be turned around as a media company and as a business. The world is watching. Our kids might be reading the end result on their tablets at school in a few years, but we get to experience it today.

WHEN TALKING TO TIGER WOODS IN FRANCE AT THE WORLD AMATEUR LEAGUE, Álvaro Ortiz, Costa Rica’s pride and golden child in the golf world didn’t think it could get any better. Although he had been competing with big names in latin america, he would keep on moving to reach a peek that can be called ground breaking. I’m talking about winning 23 national championships and 6 central american championships, reaching a record target in both. If we take a look at Alvaro’s golf career, you can say that it has been and still is star studded. Because of that privileged self made career he has been seen playing with people like Carlos Menem (Argentina’s former president),
Erick Dickerson (American top football player), Dwight Yorke (Football player of Trinidad and Tobago), Brian Lara (Cricket’s best bat man of his era) and Chayanne (singer) just to name a few. This is not something many have done, so it would be right to say that he has put Costa Rica on the map in the international world of golf when you think of all the places Alvaro has gone representing his country. When asking Alvaro what would be his choice of golf course to try for another hole in one, he didn’t hesitate to say that it would be Hawaii’s Kapalua, where the PGA’s finest previous year winners can only tee up at the opening event. But he also named the Cariari Country Club where he has grown to become the golfer he is today.
ICONIC PROFILE September 2013
A 4-year-old Alvaro Ortiz could have never thought he would ever get a hole in one, yet in his career of almost 40 years, he has had two. There is a part of luck that comes with getting a whole in one because the aim is always to get the ball as close to the hole as possible. But of course talent is needed as well as precision and strategy, the rest is luck. Many professional golf players would say that golf is a very mental game and that talent is a must, strategy being of the utmost importance. So it makes sense that a lot of successful business executives are often found on golf courses, strategizing their next moves. You should go by the Cariari Country Club sometime; who knows, maybe you will see a hole in one. If not, at least you might have the chance to find Alvaro Ortiz strategizing his next move.

TEACHING COSTA RICAN MODELS TO BECOME “FASHION” MODELS.
18 ICONIC ESTILO
FOR MANY YEARS INTERNATIONAL MODELS HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT FROM MODELS IN COSTA RICA. The models we know and usually see in the international magazines have a different way of being presented as well different sizes and lengths. It is true that well-known designers are extremely picky in their choosing of “fashion beauties”. It is because of this that not so very long ago a model shouted out her insulted feelings about a brand that didn’t want to hire her, because she was too voluptuous. It was not up until recently that Costa Rica was able to break through this tough layer of fashion model critics. For this article we talked with Costa Rican international model and owner of Unique Models agency Bali Rodriguez. Her amazing adventure crossing barriers, started when she was 16 years old and fell hopelessly in love with an Australian, heart throbbing, male model. She followed him all the way to the wild country of cowboys, kangaroo’s
and aboriginals, called Australia. Completely infatuated with his way of making a living, she got him to teach her everything. Being a natural talent, Bali (short for Barbara) was waltzing her pretty little self from one designer to another, hopping over borders as if she was collecting stamps. But after gathering so much know how of the business, and New York skies (where she was living at the time) started getting darker, she moved back to Costa Rica aiming to pour her rich and colorful history of modeling into a business of her own.
ICONIC PROFILE September 2013
When she started Unique Models there was a big gap in comparing Costa Rican models to international ones. There was a definite need for guidance of someone like Bali. So she took it upon herself to start casting models that had the possibility to become “fashion” models. This was not easy and she even got some protests. As many businesses that are ground breaking in their specific fields, there were also people that thought they needed to block the methods that she wanted to push through. While all she was trying to do was put Costa Rica in the eyes of international booking agencies of the fashion modeling industry. Fortunately Bali is a fighter and a visionary, and was able to show the significance of her way of working. Even so, that now agencies have popped out trying to implement Bali’s successes. But the significant difference (Uniqueness) that keeps Bali and her agency on top as one of Costa Rica’s best is her connections with the international bureaus. Because Bali still has a very good contact with these well-known international agencies, her models have a chance towards an international future. Trying to prepare her models and guiding them is of the utmost importance, explains Bali. For many it is a culture shock to travel away from their family and doing their job in a country where their first language is usually not understood. But after seeing Bali at work, at Iconic estilo’s first photo shoot, I see that she is a great support to the models. She is on top of everything, even in getting the proper food, which is a big deal in the industry. When asking Bali what makes her agency unique, her response was the following: 20 ICONIC ESTILO
We were the first, the pioneers, The revolutionaries. We keep our vision forward and work towards finding unique clients and unique models to represent our work and progress.

CHOICE Bearing something so private, not for sensation, but to empower women and show them that they too can be brave. To show women that are dealing with the same choice how she was able to come to that decision and not only focus on her medical path but on her family as well, because it is a decision that affects all of them. Making a point out there, about trying to live longer, so that children can enjoy both parents as long as possible. And the importance of having her other half there, close during that process. Because truthfully, we are talking about a procedure that is big in many ways and that needs careful consideration.
24 ICONIC ESTILO
ICONIC HEALTH September 2013
THERE IS A LOT OF INTEREST, NOW THAT ANGELINA JOLIE HAS DRAWN ATTENTION TO THIS SUBJECT. Because this is not a new procedure, there are many physicians that are well adapted to it. Although it is a controversial surgery, it does have the possibility to reduce incidence of breast cancer by up to a 100% in patients at high risk and that are carriers of the BRCA gene. There are genetic studies that can encounter this gene to see if you are at a high risk. What needs to be clear is that this procedure “can” be considered, if patients are possible victims of carrying the gene, with the guidance of a trusted physician. This procedure cannot be recommended as preventive to “all” patients. And even patients that have the BRCA gene that are considering this procedure need to take into account that every case is different and needs to be examined to their specific needs. Because it is a medical procedure and a significant surgery, percentages can always vary. And there is always a risk that entails general anesthesia and such. The physician has to inform the patient and the family about all the specifics that need to be taken into consideration, because each case is different. The care of the patient before and after the procedure is also of the utmost importance for quick and complete recovery. That’s why family and friends are very important and need to be supportive. Continuing to be seen by an expert is also important on the road towards recovery. IN JOLIE’S CASE, THE ACTRESS VOLUNTARILY SUBMITTED HERSELF TO A DOUBLE MASTECTOMY BECAUSE OF HER HIGH RISK OF BEING DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER (a significantly major surgery, in which 26 ICONIC ESTILO
a big part of the breast tissue is removed). She made a decision to get that surgery after learning that she was a carrier of a gene that has an 87% possibility for developing breast cancer. After the very hurtful loss of her mother (to cancer) at 56 years old, she felt this was a decision she had to make, not only for herself but also for her family. Jolie’s surgery also consists of nipple delay, a plastic surgery technique “in which the effects of mastectomy do not damage the nipple aesthetically. This causes a little pain and a lot of bruises, but increases the options to save the nipple”, stated the article in the New York Times (the source where she revealed her decision). The Oscar winning actress has shield away from the cameras since she revealed her operation to The New York Times earlier this year. But at the film presentation of “World war Z” in London last June, she was happy and proud, she even wore a significantly revealing dress. Radiating a healthy glow, clearly enjoying life, Jolie, 37, was praised for her courage in announcing her surgery. In doing so, she has inspired many women to ask for more specific information concerning their cases and helped them make a decision that will eventually take another fast grip at life and share many more memories with loved ones. We want to specially thank Dr. Allan Pérez Baltodano, a prestigious Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon at the Clínica Católica, for his extensive explanations and patience. CONTAINER HOMES ARE ALREADY AN INTERNATIONAL CONCEPT AND HAVE BEEN TAKEN ON BY THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS ARCHITECTS AROUND THE WORLD. THE LOOK OF THE DIFFERENT CONTAINER HOME MODELS, CAN BE DISCUSSED IF FOUND BEAUTIFUL OR NOT. BUT ONE THING IS CLEAR, IT IS MEANT FOR A CROWD THAT IS BOTH MODERN, FUTURE-MINDED, BUT MOST OF ALL: GREEN MINDED.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF A CONTAINER HOME IS THE GREEN FACTOR. How’s so? First of all, the fact that re-using containers helps the planet by eliminating metal scrap deposit sites. Second, it is an extremely safe way of living since containers are build to carry heavy loads, sustain through harsh climatic conditions and survive rough handling regularly. And third, because they are shipping boxes, they meet ISO standards and are stackable, making multi storied houses extremely safe and easy to build. EVEN FASHION ICON TOMMY HILFIGER HAS BEEN THINKING ALONG THESE ECOFRIENDLY LINES. He had several containers stacked in a way that his brand could be presented in an eco friendly environment in the fashion trade show in Berlin. And in doing so presenting not only fashion but also a way of life. Finishing the designs with emblazoned graphics of the Tommy Hilfiger generation; making a statement of being free souls all while living and enjoying life with awareness. In the case of architect BENJAMÍN GARCÍA, he implemented his green ideas into sustainable living by using only two containers and turning them into a home fit for a couple. He focused on the view of the property surroundings and having a secure way of safekeeping their interior designs while optimizing the flow of breeze so that the use of air conditioning was completely eliminated.
Both pioneers have presented their love for environmental improvements hoping that future generations follow their steps, empowering their statement in a greener society.
ICONIC estilo wants to thank and applaud Tommy Hilfiger and architect Benjamín García for seeing the beauty in a greener way to the future, and joining the international road to building with an innovative mind.

BIG THINGS HAPPEN ON AND AROUND STAIRS. Think when you made the family picture on them, at Christmas, when everybody was finally together. Or what about when you saw your daughter strolling down those stairs in her first elegant gown you bought for her prom ball. Or better yet, do you remember when you proposed to your wife to be. And you helped her take those last steps out of her old life into your new life together.
Stairs! History can be written on each step that is taken into the future. They come in grand French style classical, over accessorized, with little angels and gold leaf. To super modern minimalistic, appearing to float into the sky. In architecture and Interior design, stairs can mean a significant edition to the structure of the building but also to the feel of it. Some homes are build in such a way that after you have opened the door and enter the hallway, the staircase, takes your breath away. It can be a statement piece to the outside of the house. Showing you where to go, drawing you in, with a welcoming strength.
Stairs clearly are a welcoming addition to both architecture and interior design.

ICONIC LIVING September 2013
I HAVE A MEETING WITH ISIDE SARMIENTO TO TALK ABOUT FENG SHUI. In all honesty I don’t really know what it entails. But I think it has something to do with space and choosing how to put things in it. Anyway, I’ll find out soon enough. I take a moment and look around the tiny room that I call my office, and decide it will have to do for a first impression. My phone starts ringing and the receptionist tells me she’s here. When she enters the space Isidee takes in every detail and somehow it is impossible to read her. As soon as we make our polite introductions I start with the first thing that pops in my head —So, Feng Shui, is it in reference to spaces or to people? —Actually to both— she explains in all calmness and tranquility. Clearly and unlike me, she is in control of herself. — That makes sense— I try to say with some kind of intelligence but clearly I don’t have a clue what I am talking about. But then she starts explaining about the fact that it has to do with energy, and the flow of it. It’s a cycle of the elements of nature, and their energy. So how you put these elements within your space making sure that the energy has a good way to flow is what makes Feng Shui work and it will help the person who embraces it to flourish. Okay so now I get the part of the connection of space and person, but the energy flowing and the nature elements, not so much. So she tries to help me visualize it —You know how molecules exist and they flow between objects like electricity flows making a connection happen? So do the molecules between the objects, they make energy happen. And as long as you put certain elements in the right place the energy will flow more easily. She further explains:
The winds are light The sun is bright The water is clear Trees grow... The term Feng Shui comes from this ancient Chinese poem, which enhances the perfect harmony between heaven and earth. Because the wind is light it helps the sun raise and travel; the water being clear, helps reflect it and together it helps trees, plants and other living things to grow. The same goes when you put elements on a certain spot in your space, it will help the molecules get an easier flow, and through that an abundance of energy. Therefore, as the person in that space you will feel good and will be able to enjoy that energy and put it to good use.
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese tradition that seeks to generate balance within harmonic spaces.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese tradition that seeks to generate balance within harmonic spaces. Doing so in architecture, landscaping and decoration, it basically helps make the most of the flow of universal energy, providing humans a nice, stable and comfortable habitat; where they can be more productive, happy and healthy. Feng Shui is not a miraculous recipe; it is the art of good living. It helps by having a healthy environment and balance. And it is because of having that balance that we create time to reflect on all the wonderful opportunities that have come into our lives instead of focusing on the negative.
Architects might already be using this idea behind their designs. If you think of some of the houses that are built in such a way that the natural air has its best way to move through, eliminating the need for air-conditioning (which many times is a bacteria gathering point if not maintained properly). These are just some interesting quotes from the book that Isidee has written. There is clearly so much more that is explained in her book like how to get started in your own office space, house or specific room; or even bigger, like architectural buildings. FENG SHUI IS THE BALANCE IN USING NATURE’S ELEMENTS TO OUR BENEFIT AND BALANCING IT SO THAT WE CAN PUT OUR ENERGY TO GOOD USE, FOR OURSELVES AND FOR THE ONES AROUND US. THE ART OF GOOD LIVING.

EVER SINCE METROSEXUALS BECAME HIP THANKS TO SOCCER PLAYERS, ACTORS AND OTHER CELEBRITIES, THE AVERAGE MEN GOT MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR BEAUTY. So today, besides taking care of their the bodies, skin and hair, men are also turning their attention on to manicures. The harsh and calloused hands typical of hard-working men are no longer synonym of manhood. On the contrary, those who because of their jobs can keep their hands taken care of and those who precisely because of their jobs need to, can now go and get a professional manicure as well as to take care of their hands at home so they can keep them gentle enough to softly caress a woman. Don´t be surprised if every time you get to your beauty parlor there are guys getting beauty or aesthetic treatments‌ AS INCREDIBLE AS IT MAY SEEM men are starting to ask for beauty and aesthetic treatments that we never thought they will. Manicures and even facial cleansings are just some of those! It takes very manly men to get out there and take care of their hands so they are nice and soft. Manicures have become part of the male universe. More and more, men are starting to enjoy having soft hands, not only because their girlfriends ask them to, but also because they want them themselves. The times when men had rough hands, shapeless nails, hangnails, callouses and flaky skin are long gone. Usually when a man decides to get a beauty treatment he is not up to spending a lot of time; therefore, treatments for them usually take less time.
For them...
Length of manicure: 20 minutes. Process: filing nails, polishing, pushing the cuticle back, removing excess skin, exfoliating, rinsing and hydrating massage. Frequency: every two weeks, depending on nail growth.
