Jolly ol’ who?
Merry Christmas!
A
few years ago I did something drastic for the holidays. Brace yourself. I kicked Santa to the curb. No more Santa ornaments, even though I had several including one really, really cute one. No more Santa decor (and I had a lot...did I mention I used to publish a craft magazine...yes, lots, and lots of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind Santa decor). Too bad, so sad, it all went. Why? Because he was ticking me off! In his defense, it really wasn’t him. It was us. Did you know that St. Nick was a real person? There’s a story about him putting money in the stockings (hanging by the fire to dry) of some poor people. It was a good thing and it inspired the tale of the jolly fat man in the red suit who delivers his gifts to good little children. Sounds harmless enough. But we have to take everything too far. If you watch those gushy Hallmark movies during the holidays you’ll see how few (okay, probably none) mention Jesus and in fact portray Santa as almost a god. Plus, ask any kid under the age of 12 what Christmas is about and odds are they’ll say it’s about Santa and presents. We have Secret Santas, take kids to see Santa, threaten with what Santa will do if they aren’t good, and on and on. I just got tired of letting Santa have top billing for Christmas. So, I’m bringing my Christmas crazy into this issue. Don’t look at it as an antiSanta issue, it’s a re-focus issue. Refocusing on what will truly make it a blessed season. The one problem I discovered when I purged the jolly fat guy: there’s nothing to buy out there to decorate with. Well, we have some solutions and some really great non-Northpole decor to DIY. Plus, we’ve got so much good stuff to help you have a truly, get-beyond-the-gimmies, fantastic holiday season. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be inspired. Now that sounds like the perfect Hallmark movie! Enjoy the show.
Before it all begins... Before the hecticness of the holidays begins take a deep breath. Do it for real. I’ll wait. Now, take a moment and count your blessings. List off 10 right now. You can do it in your head if other people are in the room. Or say them out loud and really own them! So what if the people in the dentist office are weirded out? Did you do it? Good. We all have a lot to be thankful for. However, there are people in our community who have major struggles, especially this time of year. There are a few groups that we are featuring in this issue. When you see those, please take the time to really consider if what they are doing moves you. If so, figure out how you can bless them. Deal?
I love this saying by Dr. Seuss. I found this at Hobby Lobby. Here’s hoping you find the “little bit more” this Christmas.
May God bless you like crazy!

uthor Donna M. Young lives in Lawton with her huband, Marty. As a stage four cancer survivor, she started to write when, during treatments, she could do nothing else. Writing became her new career, even after cancer. She now knows her purpose is to write to show God’s glory to a lost and broken world. To date, Donna has written eight novels, both fiction and non-fiction. Of her writing, Donna says, “My collective works are filled with action, adventure, and imagination. I tend to put pieces of myself in every story I write, and find that by personalizing the images, the accounts are more believable to the reader. I know you will be thrilled by each new story, and through these offerings, I hope to draw people from every walk of life, and every experience, closer to the Lord. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
Donna’s books are available on Amazon and other book outlets. To see all of her titles and to find out more, go to her website at DonnaMYoungWriting.com.
Looking for something to give as a gift - maybe to yourself? The Daze of Grace is a great start and you'll be happy to know that it has a follow up book titled Grace Abounding. Grace is a young girl, born into poverty and hardship, who is tasked with caring for her brother and sisters. After an unthinkable tragedy rips her family from her, she is forced into a life on the streets. She survives struggles, and loss of such magnitude that it would destroy most, but Gracie grows stronger. When a near death experience results in a heavenly get-together with Jesus, she finally discovers her true purpose, and rises up in joy to meet the calling God has put on her life.

BETTER Stuff
Sanitary stuff
Totally gift worthy for all! The average cell phone is 10 times germier than a toilet seat in a highschool boys’ bathroom. Eww. So, clean it up with a smart phone sanitizer. Many models exist that not only sterilize your phone (using UV light), but also charge it at the same time. Plus, you can use it to sanitize your jewelry, watches, wallet, toothbrush, etc. This one is by LEDMEI for $27.99 on Amazon.
Kid stuff
A teenage boy came to his dad, “Can I have the keys to the car?” His dad replied, “Until you bring your grades up to a B average, start reading your Bible, and get your hair cut, the answer is no.” The boy was not happy, but for the rest of the semester, he worked hard. When he got his report card, he showed his dad that it had all Bs, and he recited the book of John by memory. His dad said, “Your grades are up and you’ve been reading your Bible, but you were also supposed to cut your hair. The young man was ready: “But Dad, Jesus had long hair.” His dad said, “You’re right, and he walked everywhere He went.”
Advent stuff
Advent means, “The arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.” The word is Latin and actually means “Coming.”
Timeline stuff
Need a gift idea for mom or grandma? You can DIY this or find ones you can have personalized for you on Etsy for less than $20. Create a timeline with kids’ or grandkids’ birthdays, weddings, and other memorable events.
Life hack stuff
Sleigh By Olga Vasileva/Shutterstock.com
After you use the burner on your stove, it’s hot. If you have kids or a cat who likes exploring, you worry about burns. Instead of burner covers that can get hot themselves, a good ol’ teapot does the trick - plus it’s useful and looks nice. This one by Mr Coffee whistles when the water boils. $21.43 on Amazon.
Jingle stuff “Jingle Bells” was actually written for Thanksgiving. James Lord Pierpont published it in 1857. It was supposed to be played in the composer’s Sunday school class during Thanksgiving to commemorate the popular sleigh races. “Jingle Bells” was also the first song to be broadcast from space.
Quotable stuff
“Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly Merry Christmas.” ─ Peg Bracken “We are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” ─ Laura Ingalls Wilder “Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” ─Eric Sevareid
Hot stuff
For the outdoorsman (or woman) on your gift list, here’s a unique idea. A Radiate Portable Campfire is an 8” tin that goes anywhere. The soy wax and recycled paper pulp solid lights quickly and burns for more than three hours. $27.99 on Amazon. www.beingbettermagazine.com / Nov/Dec 2019

he Siouxland Foster Closet exists because foster children often arrive in homes with little to no extra clothing, or they are lacking seasonally appropriate or well-fitting clothes. The Siouxland Foster Closet provides clothing and necessities, for foster youth in the Sioux City area. Foster parents can come ‘shop,’ during their open hours or contact them for an appointment. Looking for a good cause to support? Volunteers are needed at their Indian Hills shop to help sort clothing donations. Move like a ninja!
W
ith the TV show, America Ninja Warrior, everybody wants to be a ninja - especially kids! At V.I.P. Gymnastics, Ninja, and Cheer, kids get a chance to learn some skills that help them scale the “warped wall” and other things in life. Ninja instructor, Coach DeVon says, “Every ninja class is really inclusive. We have kids from 3-12 years old. They come in different weights, shapes, and abilities. Everybody comes to have fun, and we all encourage each other. With the younger kids, we work on balance, upper body strength, being able to do somersaults, cart wheels, and the basics - including being safe. We teach them how to avoid getting hurt, learning to fall, how to not fall on their arms or neck but to roll on their back. “For the older kids, we do all kinds of things...not necessarily ninja related. One of the most popular is break dancing. Kids learn some things they can show off - like learning a ‘swipe.’ It looks harder than it really is, but it looks super cool.
“Of course, the kids love trying to make it up the warped wall. Even some of the six and seven-year-olds can conquer the 10-foot wall. “This is a great group because everyone feels included. Every single kid is given equal opportunities, everyone works together, and there’s not as much tension to perform. Our chant we do is: ‘VIP ninjas, care, share, and are aware!’ “Even for those who aren’t part of the regular ninja class, kids can get a taste of it if they have their birthday party here, or come for Friday Nights @ V.I.P. We’ll do ninja stuff, gymnastics stuff, maybe even have Nerf gun wars, or watch a movie. “This is a place where kids can learn how to be safe, have fun, and see that they can get better at things. It’s a good place!”

ways to a stress
Be realistic
Just like making a budget, make a list of expectations. Have the kids and key holiday players weigh in too. Ask each to prioritize what things are most important to make the holiday special. Baking cookies, decorating the tree, attending a holiday show, viewing Christmas lights? Compare that to all the things you normally do and purge the unimportant. Less can be more.
3
free holiday
Limit spending
Since more than half of America feels stressed about finances normally, don’t let the holidays make it worse. Set a budget, and remember to include everything: gifts, decor, wrapping, cards, food, holiday wear, and entertainment. Make sure you not only have a budget but a source for those funds. Don’t make the mistake of using credit cards or your stress will just show up in the New Year. Find creative and fun ways to cut back. Choose less stuff and more peace.
Enjoy the same old same old
The holidays are not the time to try the herbed brown rice kale stuffing with figs. Make the tried-and-true menu that everyone is looking forward to - and that’s a no-brainer to make. Save the new recipes for the new year when you have more time, and less people to feed if it goes south.
12

4
Avoid over-kill
This can go for a lot of things. Go into holiday situations with a limiting mindset. I’m only going to spend 3 hours decorating, not all day. I’m going to enjoy my three favorite cookies at the party tonight and one glass of wine. I’m not buying any new decorations this year. We tend to regret the excess, not what we limited.
5
Do it a new way
Maybe there are a couple of holiday chores that you really must do, or know others will miss, but you just don’t enjoy tackling them. See if there is a different way to do them. Can you get your spouse to help? Can you do an abbreviated version? Can you do it ahead of time or spread it out so it’s not so much at once? Can you do it while you watch your favorite TV show? Where there’s an aversion to pain, there’s a way.

Executive Director Siouxland Center for Active Generations
“Stamp out loneliness.”
“As our holidays fast approach, many of us have visions of family gatherings, traditions, and joyful anticipations. Some seniors find the holidays increasingly stressful due to our family and friends’ upward mobility. Still others find this season, a time that focuses on family, brings sadness as it highlights the losses of loved ones, abilities, and access to friends. Increasingly, feelings of loneliness affects almost 20% of seniors and is twice the risk to our health as obesity. “If you believe that your senior parent, spouse, friend, or neighbor may have feelings of sadness, remember the spirit of the holidays and give the most precious gift you can give - your time. This can rekindle the joy of the holidays. Find ways to include them during these next few weeks. Send a personalized card, drop by with holiday treats, call, visit, or help them write holiday greetings. The best gift may be to just listen and support them.” For that extra special gift, a membership to the Siouxland Center for Active Generations, helps strengthen friendships and form new ones over lunch, coffee, or many of the activities or gatherings something to enjoy year round. “Get a wellness check.”
“As an insurance agent, I work with people when things don't turn out like they planned. While the statistics can be grim (75% of families will experience cancer and 80% of the time the first symptom of a heart attack or stroke is the heart attack or stroke), one piece of good news is that for many health issues, simply knowing early makes a difference. “If cancer is detected early, it may improve your chances of survival 50-99%! When you get into your 40s and 50s, doctors recommend annual exams. If you have a family history for cancer, heart disease, or other health risks, ask your health care provider how often you should be checked. “For those who have cancer, intensive care, or accident insurance with us, we pay up to $240 each year per person as an incentive to get those wellness checks. “So, to protect your health, your family, and your finances, it’s always good to get your annual screenings to head off issues.” Cancer, intensive care, and accident insurance covers your expenses, including bills and travel expenses. “If you’re planning to build or remodel, do not wait until the last minute and do not settle. If customers give themselves time to plan, design with knowledgeable and trained designers with experience, pick out items that truly is their style, then they’ll be so much happier, and they won’t have to settle. “At Central Kitchen & Bath, when we work with our clients, we get to know them and their personality and the character of who they are and design for that one-of-a-kind kitchen or bathroom that works for their needs and fits their own personal style. This does take some time, and it makes it so much more enjoyable for our clients. We are quite quick on our responses and turn-around, so stop by our beautiful showroom and start the process. s we come to the close of this year, we at The Gospel Mission are taking the time to stop and reflect on the past while looking forward to the future. The biggest change this year has been the increase of the homeless here in Siouxland. We are seeing our facilities being pushed to the maximum number of children, women, and men. One of the amazing things is all of the brand-new faces we have seen this year. We have been at full capacity most of this year in all of our facilities, even to the point of having waiting lists for entry. An interesting point to all of this is that we are a ministry known for its “rules” that our residents must comply with. Even though that may be the case, over and over again we hear people wanting the security of those measures giving structure and hope for their future. We are here to help
14
those in need find true reliable help for the future, to lead them to Christ. Without this structure, our efforts would simply allow people to exist, falling short of addressing the real needs that exist, and doing nothing more than enabling or ignoring serious issues. We have been truly blessed this year with so many lives being changed for an eternity. As I watch our dedicated staff repeatedly reach out in agape love, that is God’s unconditional love working through us, to these precious children of God, I am amazed over and over again of how God’s Spirit has been moving. We know this ministry cannot exist without our Lord and Savior, Jesus, at the helm. With the increase of souls being brought to the Mission, we have also seen a large increase of expenses. As an example, just with showers and laundry services alone, our water bills have increased to over $4,000.00 a month.
Being Better in Siouxland magazine / Holiday issue 2019
Utilities, trash, and insurance have increased this year over twenty percent. None of this includes the additional food we are providing to thousands of more people this year verses last. Our overall expenses will increase this year by over $250,000, which is placing a very large strain on finances. To help with our added expenses, we have added a second Thrift store in the Morningside area next to Fareway. Due to the wonderful support by our community, we have relocated to a larger location nearby at 4295 Sergeant Rd. This will allow us to more than double the Morningside facility. Our future goals are to build another women’s facility to double our capacity for women and children. We currently house 43 women and children in this facility, which is an astounding increase from last year. We have even added beds every way we can and repurposed one building. But the need is ever increasing as homeless women and children continue to grow and come to our doors. We have been called to this ministry and will continue to strive to answer that call. We have truly been blessed with the support of many Christians in and around Siouxland. We would like to extend an open invitation for all to come and tour our campus. People often say, ‘I had no idea’ of all that we are involved in at the mission. We thank this community for all of your prayers and support over the years and we need your help now like never before. In case you missed it, this is Christmas opportunity knocking on your door. Open it up! To make a donation or to come for a visit

1. Oh, Christmas tree.
This tabletop tree could even replace your traditional tree. Simply grab a live sapling (aka baby tree), and put it into a bucket. Lights, natural-looking decorations like berries, and pinecones are enough. If you don't want to deal with a real tree, we picked up this faux tree complete with lights, snow, and decor for under $40 at Walmart. In less than five minutes, it was fluffed and in the bucket.

If you've got old boards or barnwood, you can use those. Our double-board backdrop was unfinished and we got it at Hobby Lobby when they were half price (go to their website to get a coupon for 40% off any item, any week). We stained the edges, then painted the center with acrylic paint. Using a Cricut MakerÂŽ we cut the lettering. The snowflake ornament, wreath, and ribbon were purchased at Hobby Lobby as well (all on sale)! Super simple!

Make a trip to Habitat For Humanity's ReStore to find old cabinet doors. We discovered two white ones and one unfinished that we painted. You could leave them brown (or whatever color they come in...they had plenty and they're like a buck or two!) Tear strips of holiday fabric (or an old flannel shirt might just work) to tie them up. Tuck in a few festive sprigs, and glue or tie on a big sleigh bell. These may be the best looking packages this Christmas!

Debunking 1 the myth Holiday home selling
with liz deurloo
Motivation/Desperation. “There are people out there that absolutely have to move. Jobs get transferred, aging parents need cared for, and people need to look while kids are on school break. For those with a home on the market, you have motivated buyers and less competition.”

The sights & sounds. “What better time of year than the holidays to present a warm and cozy environment. The twinkle of candles and strands of lights, a crackling fireplace, cookies freshly baked, fragrant pine, a holiday table, and comfy quilts can paint a picture of home like no other time of the year.”

“
any people believe that trying to sell a home during the holiday season is a waste of time. Not so!” says Realtor, Liz Deurloo, with United Real Estate Solutions. Here’s why she says that idea is purely a myth.

Closing the deal. “For many, closing on a home before the end of the year can mean tax advantages. Plus, closing time can move quicker. Things can get bogged down when everyone is in the market come spring and summer. Take advantage of the perks of holiday home sales and put the myths to shame!”

How to come up with
Meaningful gifts with ed rosston
Here are some examples of what Ed has done for others. What was a big life event? “Most vets are proud of their time served, but uniforms, medals, and souvenirs get packed away in a box somewhere. Creating a collage with several representative items, or focusing on just one or two, makes a gift they'll be proud to display.” What's their weekend passion? “For those who are into sports, there are usually a few prized pieces - a signed jersey, the pop-fly they caught, collectible baseball cards, or the ball they sunk a hole-in-one with. We can frame them all.”
Military uniforms, medals, and souvenirs from a vet's service years can be displayed and preserved at the same time.
T
here are those special people in your life that you need a special gift for. Getting your mom a gift card isn't going to cut it. You know your brother loves golf, but he already has every golf-themed desk accessory in existence. Let's find an idea that will be meaningful for those important people on your shopping list. Ed Rosston, owner of Fast Frame, has some great ideas. “Think about something that has made an impact in their life, has been a passion, represents a success, or points to something unique or special about them, and let it become a piece of art.”
Where do they shine? “People who paint or take photos get their best pieces framed. The same should be true for those whose art is in other mediums. Maybe your sister does needlepoint or crochets. Your grandma is the best cook ever. Grab pieces that showcase those talents and frame them.”

www.fastframesiouxcity.com email: erosston@cableone.net
What marks time or history? “Deeds, awards, and certificates are obvious choices that help tell someone's story. What about your great aunt's apron, a collection of jewelry, poems or letters, or other family heirlooms? Framing these items properly will preserve them to be enjoyed now and for generations to come.”
Original watches used by the historical Pinkertons are framed as a treasured heirloom.
With 3,000 different options for frames, plus thousands of mat options, Ed will make suggestions to create a meaningful framed gift for that special person. Needlepoint, a handmade baby blanket, or origami creations can be framed as art.

hat’s the best way to manage pain? Prevent it from happening in the first place! With the busyness of the holiday season and the challenges of winter weather, staying safe is a gift you can give yourself. And your loved ones. “Be purposeful in your movements, especially on ice and snow,” David Welch, PA, with Midwest Pain Clinics, explains. “Slow down, and focus on what you are doing. Be intentional.”

TIP #2 . Stretch and strengthen
TIP #4 . Keep sand, bird seed, or
before tackling outdoor activities. “It’s important to stretch before doing any outdoor winter activity, but especially before shoveling and snow blowing. Keeping your core strengthened also helps prevent injury. The Department of Health has a great website (www.hhs.gov) with stretches for all kinds of winter activities, including hunting.”
TIP #3 . Every time you are
outdoors, always wear proper attire. “Prevent frostbite. You can get a burn in cold weather, too. Wear protective
kitty litter in your car to help with slippery situations. “Looking for the perfect gift for a loved one? Give a blizzard kit. Personalize it to suit the recipient and assemble it yourself, or get a pre-made kit,” Welch suggests. “People think they don’t need a blizzard kit because they have their cell phone, but during a blizzard, you might not have cell service, or your battery might not be charged fully.”
TIP #5 . Stay focused and prevent
injury while preparing your favorite holiday meal. Avoid a common
TIP #6 . Remind kids to be safe while sledding. “Places like Cone Park in Sioux City can provide a safer sledding environment than a friend’s back yard. Common sledding injuries include broken legs, wrist fractures, and injury to the shoulders and back.” BONUS TIP. David’s last piece of
winter safety advice? “No matter how tempting it may be, never stick your tongue on a flagpole!”

his time of year you could have sinus problems for a host of reasons, so how do you know if it’s something normal or if there’s a problem? Dr. David Wagner, with Wagner Ear Nose & Throat, has some insight that may help. What’s going on in there? “You have four pairs of sinuses. That’s the hollow spaces behind your facial bones. The nose’s job is to warm, humidify, and filter the air. When allergens, bacteria, or a virus invade your sinuses, inflammation occurs and excess mucus builds up in response. Will is go away on its own? “If it’s a common cold, it usually goes away without treatment, but sometimes it can become chronic. Even if it started out as a cold or in response to allergies,

What can be done? “Self-treating or just suffering through it can be risky, not to mention a miserable way to live. Over-using over-thecounter medications can be dangerous. Afrin and similar medications are only recommended for 3 days. Knowing what you’re dealing with can make all the difference when you know what to treat for. It may be something as simple as gentle sprays or medication. Even for more severe cases, many procedures are done in the office, like a balloon dilation. In serious cases, surgery may be needed, but 3-D imaging and light optics make it safer and more precise.” If you are suffering from sinus issues, contact Dr. Wagner today.

f you’re facing a surgery, many times that is just the first step in getting back to being you. If your procedure will require rehabilitation afterward, knowing what that looks like will help alleviate a lot of worry, and put you in the right frame of mind for the best recovery outcome.” Ben Oberle, Administrator at Accura Healthcare, says, “Having some insight on what the rehab experience, expectations, and timeline will be can make a huge difference for people. As we mentioned in the last issue, many seniors fear they will never go home again, or that they will be in the rehab facility for a very long time. People may feel like they are going to prison instead of to rehab. When people have more knowledge, they can relieve their anxiety and feel confident in this process. “Each facility is different, so it’s best if you (or a family member) can find out what your stay will be like. People are often surprised when we explain our plan and amenities. It’s not at all what they feared.”
What will I be doing? “Since the goal is to get you home as soon as we can, there will be a good amount of time focused on your therapy. Bring comfy clothes that you can work out in. We’ll gauge your regimen on your tolerance, your desired outcome, and the goal to get you home quickly. Depending on your situation, we may work on mobility training, therapeutic and strengthbuilding exercises, balance exercises, neuromuscular re-education, and safety awareness training. Ask what a typical day includes and what you should bring.” Here are a few questions Ben suggests you ask when looking for a rehab facility: How do I qualify? “If you know you’ll need rehab, the first thing is to make sure you qualify for a short term disability stay. Certain criteria must be met in order for you to qualify. Before your surgical procedure/ hospital stay, make sure you’ll meet the qualifications. Ask your hospital liaison for requirements and make sure everything is met.” How fast can I get out of here? Ben says, “The average length of stay at Accura Healthcare for a skilled care patient is 20 days. While the #1 goal is to make sure each client receives the best care for their desired outcome, we strive to get you home within 20 days. A big reason is that days 1 to 20 cost you nothing if you are on Medicare. For days 21 to 100, Medicare pays 80%. For your financial well-being, ask what the anticipated length of stay is.”
What’s it like here? “This is where a visit pays off. We have bright and cheery rooms, welcoming common areas, and state-of the-art therapy equipment. In addition to therapy and nursing care, we have cable TV, we take care of your laundry, provide your meals and housekeeping. Our accessibility and hours easily allow for visitors.” Find out what amenities they offer and how accessible it is for family and friends. “Simply knowing what you’re getting yourself into, and where you’ll thrive best and feel most comfortable, will go a long way to facing this part of your recovery with great expectations.”

[Pump it up
Muscles store mega amino acids, the building blocks of our organs and tissues. When we get sick or hurt, our bodies rely on those amino acids to heal properly. But as we age, we begin to lose muscle mass, so it’s important to build them up. Pump some iron or do exercises that use your own body weight: squats, pushups, and climbing the stairs.
[Two by two
Most muscles are arranged in pairs. Although muscles can shorten themselves, they can’t forcibly make themselves longer. So the flexor muscle that bends a joint is paired with an extensor muscle to straighten it back out. When you workout, make sure to work all groups and not just one area.
[It’s a stretch
Orthopedic specialists recommend spending 10-15 minutes warming up and stretching the main muscle groups you’re going to focus on before a work out or run. This can drastically reduce muscle tears.

Q. How often do I need a
pap smear?
Woman by Aaron Amat and veggie buckets By Tsuguliev/Shutterstock.com
A. “Pap smears are part of a pelvic exam to look for abnormal or pre-
cancerous cells on your cervix, which is part of your uterus. Most women over the age of 30 to 40 years old grew up with pap smears every year, as part of their gynecology visit. We have learned in the last ten years or so, though, that we don’t need to do pap smears that frequently because often the body can heal and get rid of abnormal cells without treatment. If your pap smears have been normal, it is actually safe to wait three to five years in between pap smears. When we see women for their yearly exams, we are looking for and screening for a lot of problems that are not pap smear related, however. So don’t skip those fun gynecology visits just because you’re not due for a pap smear that year!”
odor is short lived and related to sweat or activity. But, if it’s persistent, the odor can be a sign of infection. Bacterial vaginosis (or BV) is a common vaginal infection that can cause odor. BV is not sexually transmitted or related to hygiene practices. There is no over-the-counter treatment available, so it is something your doctor should diagnose and prescribe antibiotics for. And take it from a gynecologist – if you’re worried about an odor, it’s probably bothering you more than anyone else!”
Q. Is that an STD? A. “Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are bacterial or viral infections
that people get exposed to and infected with during intercourse. Some infections (like gonorrhea or chlamydia) can be completely cured with a course of antibiotics. These infections often have no symptoms associated with them, which is why it’s a good idea to get screened for this on a regular basis if you are having sex with new partners. Other infections, typically viral infections like human papilloma virus (HPV) or herpes simplex virus (HSV), have no known cure.”

ercyOne Siouxland Medical Center is pleased to provide fast, reliable critical care through MercyOne Air Med, its new air ambulance service. MercyOne Air Med serves victims of traumas and medical emergencies in a 33-county area by getting them safely to the hospital when seconds count. MercyOne’s air ambulance service allows for rapid transportation of ill and injured patients. The flight crew provides a high level of clinical care and early life-saving interventions while en route to the hospital. These interventions, such as carrying blood product on the flight, can lead to better outcomes for Siouxland patients. MercyOne’s flight crew is now based at the MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, which allows them to use and advance their skills each day. When not in flight, the crew of skilled nurses and paramedics provide the medical center with additional highly skilled resources to care for hospitalized patients. “Each of the flight staff bring their unique experiences from Emergency Department, Critical Care, Emergency Services, and other flight programs. MercyOne provides the community a very diverse work group, who are able to care for a wide array of patients, including trauma patients,” says Susan Froid, Director of MercyOne Siouxland Air Med.

MercyOne Air Med serves anyone who requests the service, within approximately a 150-mile radius of Sioux City. The air ambulance is able to transport patients to specialty hospitals such as Rochester, MN, or Iowa City, IA. The air ambulance service, along with MercyOne Siouxland’s Level II Trauma Center, is crucial for the continuum of care. In trauma, the “golden hour” is the critical time from injury to definitive intervention. MercyOne Air Med allows patients to receive high level interventions both during transport and at MercyOne Siouxland’s ACS verified Level II Trauma Center, thus providing the best outcome for trauma patients. MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center has been re-certified as a Level II Trauma Center and is the only hospital within a 100-mile radius of Sioux City to achieve the distinction and one of only four in Iowa. “MercyOne’s Level II Trauma verification continues to demonstrate the standard of care for treatment of injured patients in the Siouxland area. It is with great pride that our trauma team is able to provide the highest level of care to the Siouxland area,” says Dr. Craig Nemechek, MercyOne Siouxland Trauma Medical Director.

e do lots of extra things for the holidays - baking, shopping, cleaning, and decorating to name just a few. But why do we do those things? According to Amy Bloch, Executive Director at Catholic Charities, knowing the answer to that question can make the difference between being stressed and being joyful. “Especially during the holidays, we do a lot for others - which is the point (representing the spirit of Christmas and how God sent us his son), but if we don’t take time to reflect on why we’re doing everything, it’s easy to lose sight of that. Take a moment and remind yourself why you do all these things. Is it because you want to show your family how much you love them? Is it to make your co-workers smile? Is it to bring some joy into someone less fortunate’s life? It’s so easy to get caught up in the stress and busyness of the holidays. Identifying your why is important and can make such a difference in your focus, preparations, and enjoyment of this busy time of year. One year, I gave employees gratitude journals. If you’re not familiar with that, the idea is to take time each day and write down what you are grateful for. I wrote in each one, telling them something I was thankful for in them. I write in mine each morning, and many people write in their’s before bed. If you ask most people what

TIP #1 . Exercise with care “To keep your joints moving and painfree when it’s cold outside, frequent exercise is a must. If you’re not a fan of exercise, don’t worry, I’m not talking about doing anything strenuous – I’m talking about simple moving your body and taking part in low-impact exercises that don’t put strain on your joints. “Think swimming, walking on the

treadmill and outdoors (though if it’s icy avoid sidewalks as they can be treacherous this time of year), and leisurely-paced cycling on an exercise bike. Pilates and Yoga are also excellent for keeping your joints supple. Aim to add some form of movement into your day, every day. Big tip: Always warm up before your exercise, especially during the colder months, and when you’re done, treat yourself to a nice warm bath to relieve any exercise aches and pains.” TIP #2 . Be footwear-wise “What you wear on your feet is especially important this time of year. Given the potential for icy sidewalks, falls are more common and many
“Whether you’re susceptible to achy joints or not, keeping warm is crucial. When you’re feeling cold your muscles tense up and stiffen, making them more prone to injury and general discomfort. Don’t forget the thermals, and wrap up well in layers to keep yourself warm. Look for the most snug gloves and socks money can buy. If you still find you just can’t heat up, get some of those gel pads you can wear inside your gloves and pop them into your boots, so the cold doesn’t affect you.” TIP #4 . Treat your pain naturally “You don’t have to resort to medication to soothe aching joints. Heat for instance is a wonderful joint pain reliever. As well as warm baths, try alleviating your aches with warm compresses and heat pads. “Keep yourself warm and look after your joints – following these tips should help you on your way to having a lot less pain during the colder weather.” If you’ve got any aches and pains right now, especially in your knees since it’s been cold outside, head to our website to download our free tips report with plenty more actionable advice to help ease knee pain: www.impactptwellness.com/knee-pain

t may seem easier to experience the good things of life during the holidays when there’s a general sense of goodwill going around. What about the rest of the year though? What if everything is going wrong? Can we feel comfort or joy when things we would never choose show up at our door? Todd & Janet Coon are two people who seem pretty regular, until you know their life. Some of it is almost unbelievable. Some of it is remarkable. All of it is a story of what can happen when you give up trying to control your journey and instead surrender it to the author of comfort and joy.

I keep in my Bible. When I was a single mom, a dear friend of mine told me to write a list of characteristics I hoped for in a husband. I wrote down everything - likes big dogs, great sense of humor, will want to sit outside in a lawn chair with me when we’re older, loves kids, generous… I prayed for the list, and it was my guide. I prayed that God would make both of us ready for one another, and after about a year, I added, ‘God, can you make it easy for us to meet?’ Shortly after that, I happened to meet the man on the yellow list in the checkout lane at HyVee.”
Janet wanted to serve God, to understand what God wanted her to do. She and a colleague began a program at the middle school she taught at, to provide supplemental meals to kids who didn’t have enough at home. Her heart broke for those kids. But something else was brewing. A powerful experience Over time, Janet felt a nudging from God and knew there was something else for her to do. In hopes of finding out how best to serve, she headed to Haiti to help with a summer youth program. There, she experienced things most people wouldn’t believe - witch doctors and their wives giving up their livelihoods, position, and power to follow Jesus, and seeing the spiritual battle as Good overcomes the demonic forces of voodoo. There she was baptized and recommitted her life to Christ. She came back, hungry to serve God wholeheartedly.

here is so much to Todd & Janet’s story that it’s hard to know where to begin. What to include, and what to leave out. For this story, it’s probably good to start when they met, because like all good stories, love changes things. Todd and Janet actually met a little later in life. Like all of us, they chased after things, had smiles and successes, made mistakes, and tried to run their lives the best they could. But then... Janet found herself in deep waters. “I always knew about God and Jesus since I was a child, but I never felt close or had a personal relationship with God. I had something so difficult to deal with, and I couldn’t control any of it. That’s when I took it to Jesus and told Him I needed Him to take over what I couldn’t do. And He did, and that totally changed me.” As time went on, Janet had this idea of her best partner, and she made a list of all the qualities he would have. “I have a piece of yellow scratch paper

Fast forward three years, and Todd and Janet married and started their life together. Things were about to change for Todd. “Janet was going to church, and she asked if I would go one time. It was nothing that I wanted. Nothing I was looking for. When we arrived at Sunnybrook Church, a guy came up and shook my hand and thanked me for coming. I thought Janet had told him to. She didn’t. I thought [the experience] was really awesome. The following week, Janet didn’t have any expectations that I would go back to church, she simply told me she was going. I asked her to wait while I got ready so I could go too. I haven’t missed a day since. God brought me to Sunnybrook to begin my story. Coming here was a life change event.” And that was just the beginning.

No coincidences Janet prayed, “I asked God to give me ears to hear and eyes to see, and that I would be bold enough to act on what I was seeing and hearing. Not only for myself, but for Todd and I together, what we could do as a couple. Whether we could come alongside someone to help them for a time or a season.” One afternoon at a rummage sale, Todd noticed a bike. It needed fixing and he liked tinkering and repairing things so they took it home and Todd had it good as new in no time. Oddly, they had no use for a bike, so it just went into the garage. Shortly after, Todd and Janet had an event they were headed to and
BETTER / Life needed a card. They were in a hurry and rushed into Walgreens. Todd got in line while Janet picked out the card. Two young girls speaking with a heavy accent were talking to the cashier. They were from Lithuania, in the U.S. on a visa selling textbooks for the summer. They were looking for a guide to get around town. The company instructed them to find a host to stay with for the summer. It was the flood of 2011, and Todd explained the problem. “I told them that all the hotels were full, and many people had taken in others who were put our of their homes. We said they could come to our home, just a few blocks away, and help them figure out their living arrangements. “As we talked with them, we felt like we should invite them to stay with us. We knew we would want that if our daughter was in a foreign country.” Janet said, “It was Laura’s second time doing this in the U.S., so she had a car to use. Being Ruta’s first time, she was only allowed a bicycle by the company. She was to purchase that when she arrived.” Coincidentally, Janet and Todd had a bike. And they had just finished deep cleaning their spare bedroom. They later learned that Ruta’s parents had been praying for a nice family to take her in. Todd and Janet developed a strong relationship with Ruta. So, much so that the following year, Ruta’s parents invited them to stay with them and visit Lithuania. They did, and on the final day, Ruta’s father, who did not speak English, asked Todd to go outside with him. “Through Ruta’s boyfriend, who interpreted, her father spoke to me, sobbing. He thanked me for taking care of their daughter. Their only daughter.” Todd knows, “Things happen in your life, and there’s only one reason for that. It’s God working in your life.” That was just the beginning. God was just getting started. In a land far, far away Janet said, “Coming out of that we were just in awe. We were asking God, ‘What else can we do?’”
Todd, Ruta , and Janet reuniting last winter, taking a picture by a Walgreens since that’s where their journey together began.
Todd said, “There was a trip to Israel coming up through Sunnybrook. I thought it would be an interesting trip. The month before the trip, the sermon was ‘pray to be broken so that we would learn to rely on God.’” Todd stressed, “I did not pray that!” Then joked, “Do I look like the kind of guy that would pray that?” But Todd would find himself thinking about that sermon a lot when they got to Israel. Before they left on their trip, each prayed separate prayers. Janet said, “I prayed that God would draw us closer together as a couple.” Todd prayed, “That God would bring the Bible to life for me.” As they landed in Israel with the group, they had no idea how those prayers would take shape. “The first day, we visited the Valley of Elah and I picked up some rocks,” Todd recalled. “That was all I saw of Israel. My neck and my back were killing me.
Todd and Janet arrive in Israel. Todd had a headache and a backache that would send him to the E.R. that night.
It got so bad I couldn’t do anything. That first night we went to the emergency room. The doctors said I just had a backache and gave me some medication and sent me back. It helped temporarily, but the following day was the same, and again I had to go to the E.R. The same scenario ensued. On day three, Dr. Scott Sneller (a chiropractor and fellow traveler) asked if he could examine me. In a few moments, he explained that he was confident I had spinal meningitis. He went to the hospital with us that night and explained his diagnosis to the doctors. They doubted and belittled him. He was so kind and stayed vigilant to convince them so they finally relented and tested for it. He was right. Those first couple of days Janet admitted she was scared. “There were a few times he looked so bad, I thought he was going to die. I went to the bathroom and just sobbed, pleading for Todd.” Todd had a spinal tap and an MRI. They couldn’t tell if it was bacterial or viral, so they put him in quarantine and treated for both. They said he would have to stay for 20 days! During those 20 days, Janet stayed in the Old City in a convent. Many things were a challenge simply because they were not like the U.S. There was often a language barrier, the hospital was surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards were at the entrance, only the absolute basics were provided, and even trying to make a call to the insurance company would take hours. They decided to make the best of their predicament. Before Janet left the convent each morning, she’d pray. “I asked for God to put someone in my path that day that would help me and that I could also help. I had the most amazing taxi drivers. They were so kind and compassionate when I shared our story. One drove me to the hospital by way of an overlook, so I could see the view of the vast desert. I’d have these little mini adventures on the way to the hospital, so I’d have something to share with Todd. It was one of the most painful and scary times. But God placed people

on my path that were able to help and give me hope.” One day, an elderly woman was struggling to carry bags of groceries up a flight of stairs. Janet intervened and carried her bags to the top. The woman, kissed her hands over and over. Janet said, “God answered my prayer and put me in situations where I could show compassion to someone. I was listening to His whispers and nudges and then acting on them.” As Todd got better, Janet started to plan a theme for the day to keep things interesting. On “Art Day,” they walked around the hospital halls looking at the art on the walls. On “Behind the

Scenes Day” they took a tour of the hospital grounds and a staff member, Mohammed, showed them where the glass cups were if they wanted hot tea. Todd said, “With no family and no friends here with us, we looked for others to connect with. We heard a woman down the hall crying, so Janet went to check it out.” Janet discovered that the woman’s husband was very ill, and she was alone. “I asked the woman if she wanted some tea - through a lot of acting out since we had a language barrier. I went and got her some tea, since I knew where it was. I tried to support and comfort her, and just be present. Once Todd was out of isolation, he had a Palestinian roommate, and they struck up a friendship. Janet purchased pita bread from the Old City in the morning and brought it for Todd and his roommate to share. In turn, his roommate would share snacks with Todd that his family would bring to him on their visits. Janet and Todd noticed a lot of people looking in their room as they walked the halls. They discovered from the staff that people found them very interesting. Janet said, “There were local Jews and Muslims on the same floor...and then there was us.” One afternoon, an old man walked in and sat on the end of Todd’s bed and started speaking in Hebrew. Todd’s roommate was able to translate. He said the man wanted us to pray for him. He wanted prayer for healing. We all prayed for him, and he left. Todd and Janet said, “Prayer is remarkable.

wondered if that was really going to happen. “It seemed so complicated. But the flight nurse took care of everything - we really felt like one of God’s angels was sent. I got my stuff together, Janet was there, and we got into the cab... and then the driver backed into a pole.” Todd continued, still sounding relieved, “The driver just shrugged, and we left.” The best answers Todd reflected, “I never thought I was going to die, but God broke me in Israel. I was always someone who thought I could handle anything at anytime. God showed me that I couldn’t handle and control things. I thought of that sermon - I learned I needed to rely on God. I knew, whatever happened, this was going to be His plan. Once I believed that, things got a lot easier in Israel. I knew God had a plan for me while in Israel and that He will always be by my side.” What better way to see the Bible come alive (Todd’s prayer) than to profoundly know that God is going to take care of your life? And Janet’s prayer? “The funny thing is that I prayed that Todd and I would have time alone together. Prayers are
BETTER / Life answered but not always in the fashion you think they will be.” You might think the story would end there. You would be wrong. Janet’s turn Coming back from such an amazing adventure in Israel, Todd and Janet continued listening for God’s direction. Though Janet had loved teaching, she left to begin working at Sunnybrook Church, and felt she was starting a new chapter. Todd also works at Sunnybrook, and when people who need a fresh start or a leg up, Todd often puts them to work on his cleaning and maintenance crew. and flows, but Janet was feeling a little scattered. “My mom has early stage dementia, so I wanted to get on top of it since I was having symptoms. I had an MRI. They said, ‘ No dementia, but we see a tumor.’ That was rather upsetting - not knowing what size or what kind it was. “The first doctor said we should treat with radiation. I did some research and went to UMNC in Omaha for a second opinion. The doctor looked at my MRI and said we could just monitor it every few months. That was a big relief.” What they would find out about Todd’s health made Janet feel like the brain tumor was no big deal. Trusting beyond yourself About eight months later, Todd had a strange lump on his upper arm and
went to have it checked out. At first they didn’t think it was anything to worry about. It turned out to be NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma. Janet lost it. “We’re human. I had a moment I was mad at God one day just angry. I stood in my kitchen and cried, ‘WHY!’ Here my super strong husband and all that he’s had to go through. But then, the next minute I’m thankful, realizing how full our life is.” Todd’s treatment began, but they soon discovered Todd was allergic to one of the medications, and he had a violent reaction. It was so bad Janet was concerned his life was in danger. Janet had to leave the room and through tears, recalls her prayer in that moment, “I told God if you have to take him now, please do it because I just don’t want to see him suffer like this. Later, when I could enter the room he was talking to the nurse, telling her about Sunnybrook, inviting her to church. That’s Todd.” Todd said, “Because I relied on God at the end of my Israel stay, I told Janet, ‘God’s got this. It’s going to be okay, regardless of how it comes out - whether I live or I don’t. I just have great faith that God will be there to welcome me to heaven at the end. Whenever that is. And I feel great about that. “It’s pretty much constant, Him walking beside me. There have been days when I can’t get out of bed, but God is there helping me. It’s like that story...” Todd’s eyes fill with tears, “about footprints in the sand. ‘Why did You leave me?” Todd’s voice, filled with emotion finishes, “And He says ‘I didn’t. That’s when I carried you.’ That’s what gets me. It’s exactly that. He’s never not there. I never lose trust in His plan.” Janet admits, “Going through cancer, Todd has been more calm. I’ve wrestled with that. He’s my best friend. I want to continue doing life with him. But his peace has brought me peace. Knowing your loved one has that peace is so comforting. It’s easier now. At first I tried to keep the wall up - like a force field. I can cry at a Folger’s commercial. If someone showed me kindness, I’d start to break.” Smiling, Janet adds, “So
I just go to God, and say, ‘Lord, it’s me again...I just need you to listen.” What’s next? At the beginning of Todd and Janet’s marriage, they could not have imagined the experiences they would be a part of - going to Haiti, being part of local service projects, helping with Sunnybrook’s Street Medicine, and recently having the opportunity to go to Tanzania to serve women and children, are ways God is using them. They are excited to see what God has next. “We love Him, and that’s why we want to serve Him.” Final thoughts What does Todd think will happen? “I’m not sure. It’s not my plan.” Todd and Janet have been through so much, but through it all they find comfort and joy. Todd says, “I thank God for the journey I’m on - I’ve made friends, met Janet, have a great church. My cancer journey may not be about me at all. Maybe it’s for someone else to learn from. I’ll find out in heaven.” Todd sees the bigger picture, “Over my entire life, God has blessed me with joy - being able to tell my son and daughter I love them - it’s not about the bad times. It’s about keeping focus on the good.” Janet sums it all up, “We’ve just come to believe that no matter what, it’s going to be okay through Him.” Comfort and joy are theirs.

ark Twain said, “It’s not what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you think you know that ain’t so that gets you into trouble.” Mike Nash with MGNash Financial Solutions helps people know what they need, so they can enjoy an abundant retirement. “You need to know what your real situation is – if you don’t already. It might be better than you think. And even if it isn’t, address it now
so steps can be taken to live a joyful, independent, and carefree life. Here are a few steps to get you started.” 1. Determine retirement expenses - both your needs and your wants. This is more than just paying the bills. Do you want to travel, see the grandkids, start a hobby? Build it into the budget. If you’re within a few years of retirement, I suggest clients eliminate all the debt they can and maximize contributions to retirement plans. This makes a big difference to your cash flow at retirement. 2. Determine your retirement income What income is guaranteed? Usually social security is at the core of that equation. There may be a pension or 401k, rental income, dividends, annuity income, etc., that are dependable sources of revenue. You’ll need reliable cash flow for the long term. Knowing this will mitigate the risk we discussed in the last issue of Being Better.
income will sustain the retirement lifestyle you desire, but that is usually not the case. The more time you have before retirement means being able to shore up those gaps. How I was always trying to please people, and not caring for myself at all. God told me I was valuable too. “Today, my husband and my daughter are both involved in the support fellowship meeting. Our family has become closer. question is, “What are you struggling with?” For some, it’s obvious addiction, alcoholism, cancer, or divorce. For others it may be less obvious. That’s what Leticia Quintanilla found out when she began helping at a support group at Heartland Church. “I work full time and travel a lot, so I’m not always available during the week. When I found out about this support group that met on Saturdays,
and they needed someone to make the breakfast each week, I wanted to help. I didn’t realize I was going to be the one to be helped. “As I worked in the kitchen, I heard the women’s group talking, and I realized I needed to know what they were learning. It became clear to me that there were things in my life that I was ignoring, or ‘treating’ with alcohol. I knew I used alcohol to feel better too often. Depression had a hold of me. “I asked if I could join the class and as I learned each week, I understood how to let Jesus handle those things I was struggling with. I realized we are all struggling with something anxiety, loss of a loved one we hadn’t dealt with, self-worth, abuse, betrayal - and that we all find our ways to feel good for a little bit. here’s a birthday message that says, “Count your blessings, not your candles.” The holidays are a great time to reflect on our blessings (which can get overlooked). Entrepreneur, Shari Black, lives a life of gratitude and has some insight on how she focuses on the good stuff. Focus on what you’re grateful for “I choose to be positive and happy every day. And conduct myself so I make a difference.” But, during the Christmas holiday season, she is even more aware of the blessings that being an entrepreneur brings her. “I am so very grateful to own my own business. It allows me to create my own schedule, so I can have the time to be with my family. It’s like I can ‘buy’ the time to spend with them.” The best gift is to be present “Throughout my life, I have met people who literally are disappointed if they don’t have something tangible to unwrap. To me, spending time with someone and really being ‘present’ for them, is the best gift you can give.” Find joy in others’ joy She is also grateful for the gifts

makes or breaks a business. Therefore, communication is the key to successful relationships with people. The effective leader works to hone communication skills (written, spoken, or non-verbal) taking advantage of all tools and resources available. Above all, leaders develop a keen ability to listen and hear what others are trying to say, because the best communicators get that way by first being the best listeners.

any different types of individuals are drawn to leadership with a wide variety of talents, aptitudes, and personal traits contributing to a leader’s personality, spirit, and vision. The attitudes, mindsets, passion, and character that define a successful leader can sometimes be hard to pinpoint, specify, or sum up in a profile. However, it is always easy to recognize these traits or spot them in action (or the lack thereof when they don’t exist). By examining and understanding the more predominate qualities of a truly effective leader, it is possible to emulate them, nurture them, and develop them for yourself. As Brad Sugars, the founder of ActionCOACH says, “When leaders get better, everyone wins.” So, let’s focus on
A few essential characteristics
that are commonly found with highly effective, successful leaders.
1
.The ability to communicate. “Effective leaders recognize that the most important part of any business is the human element. Human resources, whether in the form of employees, strategic partners, or clients, are what
How to begin: Start with practicing. Practice BE-ing. Practice being fully present in the moment, whatever that moment is right now. Be Here Now. Then, be still and listen. Isn’t it interesting that the letters spelling LISTEN rearranged also spell SILENT? Practice being silent. “W.A.I.T.” asking yourself, ‘Why Am I Talking?’ and pause to be silent and deeply listen. It is important for others to simply be heard.”
2
. Confidence. “Confidence is a hallmark of effective leaders. Not all of us are born with confidence, but we are capable of acquiring it. Many confident women and men gain a sense of self-esteem and faith in their ability to meet challenges by acting in the face of adversity, even if they are unsure of themselves. When they meet these challenges, this feeds their confidence, pushing them to meet bigger challenges in the future. How to begin: Ask yourself if there is F.E.A.R. getting in your way – “False Expectations Appearing Real,” whether it be a fear of failure or a fear of success. A first step to building greater confidence is to do this personal reflective work; then name it, embrace it, and push through it.”
3
. Passion for learning and sharing. “Effective leaders are continual, life-long learners. Much of what they know they learned not in a classroom, but on their own - seeking out information, asking questions,

staying curious, and reading. They are also quick to learn from their own mistakes. To teach is to learn. And to lead, train, and share with others, the successful leader is constantly striving to learn more - to think differently. True leaders surround themselves with people who either know more than they know or know things that are different from what they know and do. They entertain the views of others and different perspectives that may be unlike their own. They remain open to knowledge, and then intentionally share it with others. How to begin: Reflect on your own learning edge. Are you content with your current level of learning or stuck in your own comfort zone? Are you experiencing the joy and excitement of staying curious and exploring new possibilities? This will give you energy to ignite your learning edge in new and creative ways. In what areas are you interested in becoming even more effective as a leader? Invest in yourself. Having Vision
What’s yours? with Susan erickson, life coach
A
s the year winds down, how would you rate it? Was it a year where you took a step toward a dream, moved closer to reaching a goal, or grabbed the brass ring in some area? If this year seems pretty much the same as the last (or the last few), life coach, Susan Erickson has a project for you to tackle that can set the stage for making sure 2020 breaks that mold. Sue says, “If 20/20 means you have great vision, then the year 2020 could be your year to set your life vision. Creating a vision board can be the first step toward moving the needle for you. By identifying what you’d like your life to look like, in every area, you’ll be able to start developing steps to make that vision a reality.” What is a vision board? “Simply put, a vision board is a place where you can visually see what is important to achieving in your life. You gather images, sayings, scriptures, photos, maps, magazine clippings, and other visual imagery that represent what you want in this life. “The key is that this is not about a bucket list of places to visit, achievements, or accumulation of possessions or wealth. This is about who you want to be and how you want to feel.” Why does it work? “Studies show that whatever we focus on is what has our attention. Vision boards really help you manifest or achieve those goals you want to achieve. It’s like the law of attraction. What you think about is what you focus on. If someone tells you to look out for red cars, that’s what you’ll notice. If we want a certain style of house, that’s what we start seeing. If we want a life that’s focused on a

would you want your legacy to be?” Try look forward. “Sometimes people find vision looking forward. Ask yourself, ‘Where do I want to be in five (or 10 years)?’ Be a little bit careful. Forward looking can get us to focus on things instead of purpose. Your vision should be your bigger purpose for your life.” Get past the materialistic. “When you do your vision board, focus on the elements that will make your life’s vision come true. If traveling is appealing to you, decipher why. What will you experience by a trip to the beach or the mountains? You may find that you desire more time feeling peaceful and relaxed. Maybe it’s because you want to be adventurous. This is a visualization of how you want your life to be and to FEEL.” Cover every area. “Your life is multifaceted, so assess how you want all areas to be. Consider spiritual, career, health, relationships, and mind.”

mission, identifying the vision helps us reach that goal. “Often, people don’t even know what it is they want, so they don’t know what to focus on. Doing a vision board brings wishes and dreams into a position where they can become a goal, a reality. The more our goals and purpose are in front of us, the more likely we’ll be to act on reaching those things.” How do I start? I’m not sure how to identify my vision. Start by looking back. “Your vision should be the big picture - how do you want your life to be and feel? This is your vision. It’s not a bucket list. For example, if you were at the end of your life looking back, what would you want people to say about you, what

The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. -Helen Keller What do I put on my vision board? Feel your way. “When finding visuals for your board, you have to think about the feeling you want to have for each item. Now, ask yourself what it would look like if you were to achieve that. It’s going to look different for everyone. For some success means having a certain car, living in a certain neighborhood, or having freedom, flexibility of time, etc. Define what each item/word represents and then you’ll know what visuals to put with it. There’s no wrong image, it just has to speak to you.” Get specific. “Travel may be something you want in your life, but knowing where exactly you want to go makes it more specific and goal oriented. list of destinations with a check box for when you’ve gone. If you want to spend more time reading, create a list of books you want to start with. Checking things off is incredibly motivating.” How big is this? WHAT is this? Choose your weapon. “Your vision board can be physical or virtual. Traditionally, vision boards are done on a poster paper, cork, or canvas board. Today, new apps exist that let you create a virtual board on your smartphone or tablet. Some to check out are Jack Canfield’s Vision Board by Mogulworx, Corkulous, and Dream Vision Board. There are also day planners that can be customized with your vision board. This is a handy place to create it if you use your planner everyday. The whole point is to keep your vision in sight. CarpeDiemPlanners.com have some great choices.
What if things change? “Some people have told me they made a vision board 10 years ago, and everything came true. Others have said they made a vision board, and then their life totally changed. They planned on having five kids, but after two special needs kids came into their lives, the plan changed. Life happens. As our life moves so might our perspective, what’s important, and what we want now. It’s okay.”

“A vision board works when you are truly focused on what you want and you take the steps to make it a reality. It’s a simple process, yet it can be complex as you dig into the deep longings of your soul. Take time to see how great your life can be.”

things God wants you to know that will transform your Christmas...and your New Year

ome and snuggle in, and let me tell you a story, a true story about something amazing that happened that changed the world. Now, while you may think you know the story, we sometimes forget, or never really understood some things about it. Lean in and listen to what God wants you to know...because this story is just for you. A long, long time ago, people were in big trouble. God had created them and wanted to do life with them. He told them what they should do and explained the best way for them to live, so they could have this great life. But they didn’t listen. At least, not for very long.

humanity) and tells her God’s Spirit is going to create the Savior within her. She’s super-excited. The angel also tells her fiancée, who was pretty freaked out (and probably didn’t believe her crazy story), so he knows what’s going on. They have to go to Bethlehem at the worst possible time. Hotels are sold out, the crowds are crazy, and that’s when Mary says the baby’s coming. They find a stable, clean out the manger, and wrap up their newborn in some cloth and name him Jesus (because that’s what the angel told them to name him. It means Savior or He will save).
The people thought they knew what was best for their lives, so they did what they felt like. But, it didn’t work out. Everything went wrong. They realized their way wasn’t working and they went back to God, asking him to fix their broken lives. He did, and for awhile things were good again. And then they forgot who fixed everything, and they thought they were the ones who were creating their good life. They left God, and the cycle started again.

Generation after generation, people remembered God, and the next generation forgot Him. Even when they heard about the ones who went before them, they didn’t learn. But God had a plan. Executing the biggest rescue mission of all time What was wrong with people was something man couldn’t fix. We were all infected with a disease, and there was no known cure. We didn’t know it, but God created us to live forever, and this disease stamped us with an expiration date. If we weren’t cured by the time our body expired, we’d stay dead. And what “dead” means in the next life isn’t pretty. Since God was the only one who could save us, He needed to come and do it face-to-face. He was about to climb into a human body and take up residence on planet Earth to deliver the Good News: There is a cure that will bring you back to life and let you live forever with God! How amazing is that?! So, an angel finds a teenage girl (because who doesn’t think a 14-year-old would be integral to rescue all
Meanwhile, an angel goes to tell some shepherds that “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11. Then a whole bunch of angels show up and sing and the shepherds are terrified out of their minds. After something like that happens, none of them are going to sleep, so they head to Bethlehem to see this baby. They get there, and it’s just like the angel said. When they left, they told everybody. Far away, wisemen saw a sign in the sky, and they knew about a prophecy from scripture that said this star meant the King of the Jews had been born. They take off to go see this world-altering child. www.beingbettermagazine.com / Nov/Dec 2019

BETTER / Life
Thirty years later, Jesus is grown up and that’s when things get really interesting. Since the “I’ll-do-things-my-waymyself ” cycle is still in full swing, most people won’t listen to God once again. But for those who do listen, and do believe in God’s plan, people are cured of their disease (aka: sin), and they are alive again. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” When their body expires, they get to go be with Jesus - forever. Eternal peace, joy, and love is theirs. Yeah! But here’s the kicker. A whole bunch of people say they believe in God’s plan (that Jesus dying on the cross paid for their cure, wiped away that expiration date, and freed them from sin), but their life is still a mess. It doesn’t look any different than before. So what’s the problem? Here’s what God wants you to know:
1
You’re not like everyone else. If you truly want to be free of sin (and live forever with Jesus), then you tell God you want His free gift. This is you coming to a crossroad and choosing to go a different way - with God. (This is the opposite direction of where you were headed.) You choose to let God run your life instead of you. Following Jesus each day will teach you how to live right - to live the amazing life God has planned for you. The Bible says, “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.” Ephesians 2: 1-3
2
Your life will change when you belong to God. Make sure you do.
You need to check your direction. If we give our life to Jesus and say we are following Him, then why don’t we ask Jesus where we’re going each day? This isn’t up for debate. Jesus can see if we’re with Him or not - regardless of what we say. Either we’re planning our life or we’re chucking what we want because we’re going His way. Don’t delude yourself
48
Being Better in Siouxland magazine / Holiday issue 2019
that you’re following Him if you’re still running the show. Jesus says, “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? Luke 9: 23-24
3
Start each day asking Jesus for directions.
You can have peace today. If you’ve chosen to go God’s way, then you should be experiencing peace and joy. The Bible says so. Often, the problem is we focus on our situation and not on who we are - a citizen of heaven, a child of God, alive in Christ (see Ephesians 1 & 2). Instead, we keep worrying about what’s going on here. The Bible says, “Don’t worry about anything [ANYTHING!]. Instead, pray about everything [EVERYTHING]. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” Philippians 4:6-7
4 5
Read the Bible and own your peace (and all the other promises).
Know that I have a good plan for you. Jesus told us that in this life we would have trouble (John 16:33). It’s a world full of sinful people, what else would we expect? But, despite what happens, God says it’s all going to work out. Jeremiah 29:11 says, 'For I know the plans I have for you' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' and Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him...” Focus on your future reality, not your temporary circumstances.
Make a better resolution this year. Remember how this whole story started? People kept trying to do things on their own. They were too busy for God. Too full of themselves for God. Too mad at God. Too distracted. They had weight to lose, kids to raise, ladders to climb, relationships to find or repair. And then something went wrong. Something they couldn’t fix. Don’t wait until things are bad, or worse. If your life isn’t where you want it to be, you may need to go back to #1 (because it’s all about who you’re putting as #1). What if this next year, you really gave your life to God? The Bible says, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8 If being near to God scares you or freaks you out for some reason, you need it even more. Be brave and try. Resolve to spend time with God, just the two of you, every day. Nothing will change your year more.

Unfortunately, King Herod found out that this baby is not just any baby. In fact, he hears that his job might be in jeopardy in a few years. So he figures he’ll erase the problem and sends soldiers out to try to kill Jesus. Of course, God’s not going to let that happen, and they escape.

Combine 4 cups old-fashioned oats, 2 cups coconut, 1 cup raw, sliced almonds, 2 t. ground ginger, 11/2 t. cinnamon, 1 t. nutmeg, 1/8 t. cloves, 1/2 t. salt. Mix well. Pour over 2/3 cup melted and cooled coconut oil and stir well. In a small bowl, whisk together 6 T. pure maple syrup, 3 T. molasses, and 1 t. vanilla. Pour over mixture and stir well. Pour onto a large baking sheet with 1" sides. Bake at 3250 for 20 minutes, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, until it's lightly browned. Remove from oven and continue stirring every few minutes until cooled completely. Stir in 1 cup white chocolate chips, 1 cup dried, sweetened cranberries, and 1 cup pumpkin seeds. pple cider is one of those cozy drinks that is perfect for holiday gatherings. Most of us will simply buy our cider at the store, but if you get some at a farmer's market or local orchard, just be aware that it may not be pasteurized. Most juices, including apple cider, are pasteurized to destroy any harmful bacteria. If it's not pasteurized, it should contain a warning that it can cause serious illness in vulnerable people. Most food experts recommend, to be on the safe side, serve only pasteurized cider at your holiday gatherings.
Q&A
Q. At holiday parties, food sits out. How do I keep it safe? A. Keeping cold food cold (under 400F) and hot foods hot (1400F+) is key. Between 400-1400 are prime temps for bacteria to grow. If you're having a buffet, it's best if you can have cold foods nested in ice and hot foods continually warmed - like in a crock pot.

Even though the name says it, we all know that Boston cream pie is, in fact, a cake. It's totally delicious, but it's a cake.
Pie
Pumpkin pie showed up at the pilgrims’ second Thanksgiving back in 1623. In the 19th century, fruit pies were commonly eaten for breakfast. As someone once said, "Life is short. Eat dessert first." Perhaps they meant pie.
Pie preferences
According to a survey by GE, those of us in the Midwest prefer pumpkin pie for the holidays. However, Pillsbury's poll said Americans choose apple pie as their number one, most notably, for Thanksgiving dessert. Better make both!
