Beit Haverim is an open, inviting, and spiritually alive Jewish community, located just outside of Portland, Oregon in Lake Oswego. We welcome everyone to our Reform congregation of Jews by birth, Jews by choice and Jews at heart.
FROM Rabbi Alan Berg Thanksgiving – America at Its Best Community Service with LOUCC Thursday Nov 20 - 7 PM
Dear Friends, I hope you will be able to join us for our combined Thanksgiving celebration on November 20 at 7 PM with our lovely congregational hosts and partner, the Lake Oswego United Church of Christ. Our Cantor Ann Brown will join Bill Davis and the choirs from Beit Haverim and LOUCC as we gather together to affirm America as a community of caring neighbors. I understand that as I write this there are many forces pushing us to be less neighborly, from disingenuous politicians that tell us that government is the problem, to the economic imbalance, to the struggles in the middle east and fears of Ebola, and other contagious illnesses; you name it, and we can find reasons to keep to ourselves. There is a phrase in Hebrew “Kol Yisrael aravim zeh v'zeh – All Jews are responsible for each other.” America calls us upon to fulfill that holy challenge both for Jews and the even greater challenge – because it means having empathy for people who on the externals are different that us – for all Americans. Our community Thanksgiving service makes it possible to take a step in the right direction on all of these goals through song, prayer, message and mitzvah. Those of us who were there last year felt that we were present at the creation of a new and needed version of the American voice. I look forward to seeing you. This is for all generations together. b’shalom. Rabbi Berg

Letter From Our President, Sue Greenspan Now that the High Holy Days are behind us, Beit Haverim has started the momentum of the New Year in a “feel good” right direction atmosphere. Simchat Torah was quite a joyous occasion with the Torah unscrolled and the children dancing in the aisles. If you missed it, you should make note to attend next year. With spirits at the Temple soaring, you may want to consider a few alternatives to help with the financial burdens we face. Besides dues and pledges, please consider another way to not only help Beit Haverim, but to fulfill some of the obligations we face during the year. Giving a Tribute or Memorial to any of the funds at the Temple is a wonderful gesture. Traditionally, when someone has an Aliyah, they typically donate $18 (Chai). A cash donation for a Memorial or Tribute means so much more than a Hallmark Card and you will be doing a Mizvah for the Temple. These cash donations can be in any amount and at your own time and discretion. If you were in awe of the music during the Holidays, say it with a donation to the Music Fund. Want to pay tribute to Rabbi Berg for performing a ceremony or you were moved by his inspirational talk, give to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund. Feel the Beit Haverim Religious School would be a good place to contribute, Religious School Fund. Observe the yarzheit of a loved one by making a donation to any of the funds listed or to the general fund. These donations add up quickly and mean so much to our Temple. Quite often, we need to pay teachers as well as meet other expenses. Donations cut down on our borrowing requirements and enable us to lighten our debt. I sincerely hope you consider this type of donation. You can find a link to the Tribute and Memorial page on the Web Site or the Weekly and Monthly Newsletters. B’Shalom Sue Greenspan

Committee Updates Friday Night Shabbat Clean Up The Congregation is looking for people that would be willing to come a few minutes early to Shabbat Services and help set up for the Oneg and then spend a few minutes after cleaning up. This would entail setting up the Bema, pouring wine, putting cookies on trays, and wiping down the counters. If you are interested, please call Allison at the Temple Office at 503-568-1241. She will assign you a date and a board member to work with.
Food Drive Recap Congratulations to Beit Haverim! We collected well over three barrels full of food for our annual food drive for the Oregon Food Bank. When they came to pick up the barrels, they filled a fourth barrel with the overflow! As soon as we get a total of the weight of our collection, we will let you know what it is. Thanks to everyone who participated. And now....on to our NEXT CHALLENGE....and it won't cost you a cent! Tikkun Olam tries to heal the world...bit by bit. Let's try this one: For our next challenge, let's smile more each day. Let's try to say a kind word each day and see if it makes another person happy which will make US happy. We can do this and teach our children to participate this way, and we will make our little worlds more pleasant for all of us.
Volunteer Opportunity within the Religious School We are in need of volunteers. YOU are very important to our program! The success of our religious education program depends on the dedicated individuals in our congregation willing to share their time, talents and knowledge with our future, the children. We encourage all our members, as well as parents of children in our program to help. I am looking for members who would be willing to substitute in the classroom on Sundays, help set up snacks on Sunday, and classroom aides for a second set of hands when needed. Please let Heather Kirkbride know if you are interested in these or the many other volunteer opportunities that are available.
Knitzvah! We are again knitting/crocheting hats, cowls, headbands and scarves for Lift Urban. They host a party every December for low income adults living in NW and Downtown Portland. This helps keep folks warm and it is often the only gift they receive all year. We have yarn at Beit Haverim that you can use. It is a basket in the fireside room. Last year we were able to give 47 items. It would be great to increase that number. Any questions, contact Karin Stolz. Thank you so much for being part of this worthwhile project. November, 2014

Committee Updates Tikkun Olam invites you to participate in two new projects that tie in with two of our upcoming B’nai Mitzvah. Here’s the first one: Jahleel Heath feels strongly that foster kids deserve comfort and toys. He is selling fresh eggs from his chickens to help fund bundles that he will make with comfy blankets, p.j.s and teddy bears. We thought it would be a grand idea to collect new and very gently used toys (unwrapped) for foster kids as well. Please bring your toys to Beit Haverim and we will give them to Jahleel and his mother Kim Kent to enrich the holidays of some foster kids. Just a little effort on our part will make a big difference. Now for the second project: Matigan Williams is a dancer and believes in the joy and power of dance. She knows that not all kids can afford either new dance shoes or lessons, so Matigan is collecting new and gently used dance shoes (any type…ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, boys’ or girls’ shoes) and will give them to Aspire, a program that provides after school dance lessons and summer camps for kids. Email Matigan2015@gmail.com for further information. Monetary donations are joyfully accepted as well. Let’s do what we can to support our B’nai Mitzvah and to make the holiday season happier for lots of kids. Thanks so much for any help you can give. Barbara Gold, Tikkun Olam Chairman
Bar Mitzvah Project Jahleel Heath
Eggs for sale $3. Half of that money goes towards helping out foster kids. I am making bundles with blankets and teddy bears and pjs. If you would like to donate tell Kim Kent and she will collect money for me.

Community Events The Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon & The Jewish Book Month Group invite you, your family and friends to the From History to Family History Program November 9, 2014, 1PM Mittleman JCC, 6651 SW Capitol Highway David Laskin, Author of The Family: A Journey into the Heart of the Twentieth Century. The Family tells the story of the Jewish 20th century through the experience of one ordinary, extraordinary family. A century and a half ago, a Torah scribe and his wife raised six children at the western fringe of the Russian Empire. The upheavals of the last century split the family into three branches: one immigrated to America and founded two businesses, including the fabulous Maidenform Bra Company; one went to Palestine as pioneer farmers and participated in the violent birth of the State of Israel; the third branch remained behind in Europe and suffered the onslaught of the Nazi Occupation. One family—three paths—and the epic history the Jewish 20th century: this is the story of The Family. Come join us and hear about this incredible saga of a Jewish family and learn more about how the author delved into genealogy research. Laskin’s recognition and exploration shows genealogy IS history. David Laskin is a bestselling author of The Children’s Blizzard, which won the Washington State Book Award and Midwest Booksellers’ Choice Award for nonfiction, and other books and articles. The Family was chosen as Amazon Best Book of the Month and was shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. Please see davidlaskin.com website to review the many other awards he has won for his writing. Please come early if you would like help from other genealogists. Thanks to Mittelman Jewish Community Center for providing space for this event. Cost: The program is free to 2014 JGSO members. We request a $5 contribution from non-members. That fee can be applied to a membership should you decide to join JGSO at this meeting. For more information about the program, please write to jgsoregon@gmail.com or call Barbara Hershey at 503-249-1976.

Portland Jewish Book Month Club Joint program between Beit Haverim and Congregation Shir Tikvah
Sunday, November 16, 2:00PM Mittleman Jewish Community Center 6651 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219 Join us for a joint program for Portland Jewish book Month "In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist" by Ruchama King Feuerman.
The program will start with an introduction to Kabbalah by Rabbi Stone followed by a discussion of the book. “In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist” by Ruchama King Feuerman is described as… An eczema-riddled Lower East Side haberdasher, Isaac Markowitz, moves to Israel to repair his broken heart and becomes, much to his own surprise, the assistant to a famous old rabbi who daily dispenses wisdom (and soup) to the troubled souls who wash up in his courtyard. It is there that he meets Mustafa, a devout Muslim, deformed at birth, who is a janitor who works on the Temple Mount. When Mustafa finds an ancient shard of pottery that may date back to the first temple, he brings it to Isaac in friendship. That gesture sets in motion a series of events that puts Mustafa in mortal danger. November, 2014
