Beit Haverim is an open, inviting, and spiritually alive Jewish community, located just outside of Portland, Oregon in Lake Oswego. We welcome everyone to our Reform congregation of Jews by birth, Jews by choice and Jews at heart.

FROM Rabbi Alan Berg

Join us in the Sukkah and for Lunch and Study Thursday Morning October 9th at 10 AM For Prayer on Shabbat Friday evening October 10 at 7 PM And Roll out the Torah on Simchat Torah as we welcome our new Religious School students. Friday Evening October 17 at 7 PM

Dear Friends, On the 1st morning of Sukkot Beit Haverim will have its first morning service for the festivals this year. Weather permitting we’ll have our service in the temple Sukkah, followed by a byo lunch, and a study session focusing on the book of Ecclesiastes. This text is the traditional Haftarah for Sukkot. It carries a Jewish philosophy of ‘wistfulness’ that is found in no other book in the Bible. The familiar phrase ‘to every thing there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven’ is but an entryway into this side of Jewish faith. Our Sukkot celebration continues with a wonderful Shabbat evening service in the Sukkah on October 10, and culminates at Simchat Torah on October 17 with the great rolling open of the Torah for the final reading and the new beginning. Sukkot is the reward. It is called The Festival in the Jewish tradition. Looking forward to celebrating with you. Best for a comfortable Yom Kippur fast. Gamar Chatimah Tovah. May it conclude well for you. Rabbi Alan Berg October, 2014

Letter From Our President, Sue Greenspan As you are reading this message, Beit Haverim is in the midst of High Holy Days 5775. As always, as we read from the Siddur, we are inspired, moved, and reflective. Putting on High Holy Day services can be compared to putting on a Broadway Musical. There are a few major players, a chorus, and behind the curtain there are the backstage hands. At this time, I want to say thank you to the whole cast that brings you these High Holy Day Services. To Rabbi Berg and Ann Brown who have spent weeks writing and coordinating music and songs. To Allison Fowler, our office manager, a master at multi-tasking. Taking reservations, speaking to congregants, welcoming potential members, paying bills, answering mail, and sending out reading assignments (to name a few) at this time of year. Dena Gutterman, our membership chair, and her committee, who welcomes members and guests as you enter the sanctuary. Ritual Chair, Karin Stolz, for assigning all our lay readers, scheduling ushers for the holidays, and coordinating the yearly calendar. Allan Kalik and Judith Kleinstein, who together lead the Beit Haverim Choir, which brings us our spiritual music. Suzanne Causer, the resident artist, who designed and created our beautiful cross cover and quilting piece that hangs from the podium. Gabrielle Williams and Leslie Bratschi for bringing outdoor beauty indoors with their floral arrangements. Mother/daughter team, Robin Kay and Erin David, who made our beautiful homemade Challahs with love. Rob Hershinow and Allan Kalik for calling us to worship with the resounding sound of the shofar. Mark Newman and helpers for spending time each year at High Holidays, building a Sukkah. Barbara Gold and the Tikkum Olam committee for coordinating our Annual Food Drive with the Oregon Food Bank. Heather Kirkbride and the religious school staff (Carol Cohen, Kim Kent, Rob Hershinow, Sami Oberlander, and Mara Newman) for educating our students in the traditions, liturgy, and stories of the High Holy Days. Francia Trosty for her beautiful graphics. Michelle Minch, our marketing and publicity chair, for getting Beit Haverim into the media. Naomi Angier for coordinating the Break Fast each year. To the many ushers who keep the foyer clear and check the parking lots and surrounding areas. To the many bakers and cooks who bring delicious treats to our oneg and Break Fast. And lastly to all the congregants to come to worship at Beit Haverim. Your voices are heard!

Community Events Portland Jewish Book Month Club Joint program between Beit Haverim and Congregation Shir Tikvah

Sunday, November 16, 2:00PM Mittleman Jewish Community Center 6651 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219 Join us for a joint program for Portland Jewish book Month "In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist" by Ruchama King Feuerman.

The program will start with an introduction to Kabbalah by Rabbi Stone followed by a discussion of the book. “In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist” by Ruchama King Feuerman is described as… An eczema-riddled Lower East Side haberdasher, Isaac Markowitz, moves to Israel to repair his broken heart and becomes, much to his own surprise, the assistant to a famous old rabbi who daily dispenses wisdom (and soup) to the troubled souls who wash up in his courtyard. It is there that he meets Mustafa, a devout Muslim, deformed at birth, who is a janitor who works on the Temple Mount. When Mustafa finds an ancient shard of pottery that may date back to the first temple, he brings it to Isaac in friendship. That gesture sets in motion a series of events that puts Mustafa in mortal danger.

Committee Updates Food Drive Ongoing until October 14th Please stop before you forget! Fill a bag or bags with non-perishable food to bring to services with you. The barrels are ready in the lobby and we are counting on you to over fill them. The Oregon Food Bank really needs help from all of us. On behalf of the Tikkun Olam committee, thank you for your help in feeding our neighbors. Blood Drive Wrap Up Beit Haverim held our 8th Red Cross Blood Drive on September 29th, collecting 18 units for those in need. Over the course of these 8 blood drives, thanks to our wonderful donors, we have collected 211 pints of blood! These donations help up to 633 patients. Blood cannot be manufactured, it can only come from generous donors, so please continue to give.

Clothing Drive to Benefit Clackamas County Clothes Closet Update from Karin Stolz Wow! I feel privileged to be part of this organization. We collected even more clothing this fall than we did in the spring! We all will help school aged kids feel better about themselves by helping them dress in new clothes. Thank you, thank you! We will do another drive in the spring, so save up any clothes your kids or grandkids outgrow. I look for super bargains whenever I'm out shopping to donate. Thank You! Volunteer Opportunity within the Religious School We are in need of volunteers. YOU are very important to our program! The success of our religious education program depends on the dedicated individuals in our congregation willing to share their time, talents and knowledge with our future, the children. We encourage all our members, as well as parents of children in our program to help. I am looking for members who would be willing to substitute in the classroom on Sundays, help set up snacks on Sunday, and classroom aides for a second set of hands when needed. Please let Heather Kirkbride know if you are interested in these or the many other volunteer opportunities that are available. Knitzvah! We are again knitting/crocheting hats, cowls, headbands and scarves for Lift Urban. They host a party every December for low income adults living in NW and Downtown Portland. This helps keep folks warm and it is often the only gift they receive all year. We have yarn at Beit Haverim that you can use. It is a basket in the fireside room. Last year we were able to give 47 items. It would be great to increase that number. Any questions, contact Karin Stolz. Thank you so much for being part of this worthwhile project. October, 2014

August B’Nai Mitzvah Re-Cap Abigail and Audrey Minch

The voices of the nieces and nephews running through our home and the ebb and flow of family coming and going from the week leading up to the B’not Mitzvah is now a memory. As are the mundane details of party planning and shuffling the girls to religious school and Hebrew tutoring. What now remains is a large pile of “B’not Mitzvah” stuff for us to sort through and carefully find places for in our home. It’s the physical reminder of all the work that led up to the day that our daughters embarked on their adult responsibility of being Jewish. A month later, how do we know if “things” really resonated for them after the big day. There are the subtle hints that indeed “it worked” and that the girls have taken their lessons and responsibilities to heart. One of the first indicators was soon after Aug. 9th , we asked if they wanted to continue their advocacy work for horses. We’re pleased that indeed they continue to raise money and awareness. In fact, about two weeks ago a couple of gift checks arrived for the girls, and rather than depositing it to their own personal accounts they insisted on depositing the money into their fundraising account to sponsor rescued wild mustangs and abused domestic horses. As our family settled in for our first/last/and only excursion of the summer in Sun River, the girls reminded us that we needed to find matzah ball soup and challah for Shabbat Dinner in the rental. I can tell you after visiting 3 grocery stores, there was no challah in Bend, OR, and the dinner rolls reminded us to bring the bread maker next time! Sometimes, it’s the otherwise mundane things that provide these hints – like the girls choosing to wear a Star of David necklace to school. And so, the girls are back in school as 8th graders, and I look at the B’not Mitzah box that still needs sorting that I continue to trip over in my home office. It’s a constant reminder, as are our daughters, of Aug. 9th. It wasn’t merely the act of the girls standing on the bima reading Hebrew, but rather the beauty of our congregation joining together to rejoice in the mitzvah. Sure, family traveled across country, and that itself is beyond special, but they are all settled back into their daily lives. What we are left with is our cherished Beit Haverim family who has been by our side through the shuffle of all it takes to raise Jewish children in a fast-paced world. May all of those ahead of us feel the same sense of family that we felt on August 9th at Beit Haverim. L’Shana Tova, Michelle and David Minch

B’Nai Mitzvah Re-Cap Jacob Sherman

It was extremely joyous to witness Jacob carry out this long standing Jewish tradition of becoming a Bar Mitzvah “Son of the Commandment” . We literally watched him come of age on Saturday morning August 16th. Years of Hebrew study since the age of 9, along with commitment and tutoring during the last year from Sami Oberlander helped him reach this milestone. Jacob led Shabbat service and had the honor of reading from the Torah in front of family and friends with poise and confidence. Most importantly was that this custom was able to be passed on to him as a 2nd generation American as his maternal grandparents survived as Jews in Romania during the Holocaust. L’dor V’ dor, from generation to generation, it is truly a miracle. Jacob taught us many lessons on this day. During his D’var Torah he translated a message from his Torah Portion Eikev from the book of Deuteronomy into everyday life choosing to focus on having Gratitude. He also taught us that with hard work and determination you can achieve anything! Many thanks to the Beit Haverim Community and beyond for supporting Jacob and our family during this Simcha/happy occasion. Rita, Steven, Joshua and Jacob

B’Nai Mitzvah Re-Cap Edyn Pilkington

Edyn was called to the Torah on August 23, 2014. Edyn's life is full of dance and she embraces life to its fullest. Her Bat Mitzvah ceremony reflected this as she conducted the service with confidence and filled us with so much joy. There were many heartwarming songs reflecting her Torah portion and it was a service we will never forget. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us on this special day.

High Holy Day Banner

Special thanks to Suzanne Causer who made the beautiful High Holy Day Banner. It was hanging during Rosh Hashanah for all to see. One one side it says, “On Rosh Hashanah it is written” and on the other side it reads, “On Yom Kippur it is sealed” (in the Book of Life).

Simchas Mazel Tov to Stacy Epsteen, who was named volunteer of the quarter by the Oregon Food Bank for her work with the Nutrition Education Team. According to the Oregon Food Bank newsletter, “Stacy has gone above and beyond this last quarter. She has been enrolled in multiple Cooking Matters courses, came and helped out at OFB during our all staff meeting and is out in her local community organizing food drives and supporting the mission of the Oregon Food Bank wherever she goes. She has been such an inspiration to all of us. She is always willing and eager to help and is always in the best spirits when doing so!” Stacy noted, “The Nutrition Education Program is a direct service program that provides tools that the participants can use immediately. And it is done in a way that is respectful of their individual life skills, their ethnicity, and their dignity. … When there is an organization with such a significant mission as the Oregon Food Bank, I believe that one basic truth is that the volunteer experience is then a reminder of gratitude in our personal lives.” Join Stacy in supporting the Oregon Food Bank and be sure to contribute food donations to the barrels currently in the lobby of LOUCC during High Holy Days.
