2017 ISPA BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTED OFFICERS

“What you want to IGNITE in others, must first burn inside yourself.” – AURELIUS AUGUSTINUS

As leaders in the industry, it’s important for us to give ourselves the gift of the ISPA Conference & Expo to properly lead our teams to success. We need to come together in community. We need to network and meet like-minded professionals. We need to continue our industry education. We need to do all of this so we can then go back home and properly lead our teams to success. The 2017 ISPA Conference & Expo will ignite in you what you hope to ignite in others. And can you believe it’s less than two months away? BLEISURE: A New Category of Travel ave you ever been tempted to tack on a few days after the ISPA Conference & Expo to explore Las Vegas? What about your last buying trip to Asia? If so, you might just be a bleisure traveler. A new study released by the GBTA Foundation, the research and education arm of the Global Business Travel Association, found that in the past year, 37 percent of North American business travelers extended work trips for a short vacation. The study, conducted in partnership with Hilton Hotels & Resorts, tapped 675 business travelers in the United States and Canada and found that age was a factor in those choosing to extend professional trips into a holiday, with nearly 50 percent of

H

millennials choosing to do so, a much higher rate than Gen X-ers (33 percent) and baby boomers (23 percent). Another interesting part of the study noted that travelers rarely change accommodations when transitioning from the business to leisure portion of their trip, citing that 82 percent stayed in the same place for both portions. Spas are perfectly poised to tap in to the bleisure travel market. A spa treatment is the perfect way to transition a trip from business to pleasure. In-room advertising and treatment packages geared toward this new category of traveler could attract the type of business traveler that historically didn’t have time to make a stop in the spa. n

Buddha Spa Creating Unity Through Education and Technology razil has the fastest growing spa industry in South America, it’s also in the top 20 wellness tourism markets in the world. With such a large chunk of Latin America’s spa market, Brazil is a breeding ground for a day spa franchise system like Buddha Spa. With over 30 locations throughout Brazil, Buddha Spa has become the

B

largest day spa franchise in the country. That growth is exciting for Gustavo Albanesi, managing partner of Buddha Spas, but it also presents quite a few challenges. Albanesi gives a little insight on keeping up with the people and the times in such a vibrant wellness market.

replicate impeccable customer service and experience across 30 locations. “People management, I believe, is always a challenge when we speak about franchises,” says Albanesi. “We dedicate large investments and a lot of effort in training not only therapists and receptionists, but also franchisees, so we can guarantee our quality and standards.” The goal behind Buddha Spa’s franchise program is to allow entrepreneurs to realize their dreams of owning their own business, while keeping the Buddha Spa brand cohesive. To achieve both goals, the company offers training every six months, both in-person and online. Job satisfaction and retention is also extremely important to Albanesi’s franchise system. He wants employees to learn and grow within the Buddha Spa network. Quality spa employees are currently lacking all over the world, so keeping skilled and knowledgeable workers in-house is vital to each franchise’s survival, which is why Buddha Spa has such a strong career

building program for all its employees. In addition to training throughout the year, Buddha Spa also helps every single employee map out a career plan within the company to ensure satisfaction and longevity. Albanesi says of the program, “Each of them are evaluated in a very detailed process so they can grow in their Buddha Spa careers.”

demands, Buddha Spa is currently transitioning all appointments to an online booking and scheduling platform. This online system will also include an ondemand booking app that will allow therapists to make themselves available when customers need them. “On-demand spa services has become such a huge trend world-wide, so we are jumping on the opportunity to allow our therapists to take control of their customers. This new system will keep both clients and therapists from going elsewhere and literally allow Buddha Spa to be in the palm of our customers’ hands.” Albanesi plans to hire additional ondemand therapists to meet the expected increase in services once this app is

launched in September. The existing Buddha Spa online training program, complete with manuals, video instruction and quizzes, will serve as a tool to keep both full-time and ondemand therapists on the same page. To market this new service, as well as keep existing Buddha Spa locations top of mind to customers, Albanesi is using Facebook, Instagram, email marketing and the company’s blog. “We also frequently make partnerships with social media influencers so they can introduce Buddha Spa to their followers,” he adds. The key is to keep Buddha Spa at the forefront of people’s minds so when someone in Brazil thinks spa, they think Buddha Spa. n

Millennial Brides are Swapping Booze for Balance in Latest Wedding Trend BY JUDITH CULP PEARSON

Brides are choosing wellness over wild and opting for spa bachelorette parties.

GIRLS LOVE ESCAPING TOGETHER. Two centuries ago they might have retreated to a country home. In the last few decades they have headed for a shopping event or partying in Las Vegas. Now, instead of partying, millennials are thinking wellness. With wellness tourism on the rise, it’s no surprise spa bachelorette parties have become the latest wellness and bridal trend. Plus, it’s a great way of approaching the very stressful demands of a wedding: bonding time, relaxing time, destressing time, and it’s a trend that is easy for the savvy spa to market to.

Day Spas Just because you’re not running a traditional resort spa, doesn’t mean you can’t get in on the bachelorette getaway trend. Day spas can offer full-day packages to cater to both local and visiting bridal parties. Try partnering with a nearby hotel to offer the popular three-day retreats to visiting groups. include spa therapies, rooms, food, beverages and activities. Escapes might be as short as three days or they might extend for a week or more. Working together to customize packages to each bride’s needs will benefit all areas of the hotel or resort. Depending on your individual situation, packages might include: l Yoga retreats l Personalized fitness programs l Spa therapies (massage, facials, manicure, pedicures, access to pools and other amenities) l Spa goodie bags for guests l Healthy lifestyle tips l Outdoor activities Targeted Marketing To bring these coveted bachelorette parties to your spa, you’ve got to think strategically about your marketing efforts. You will get the best results by having a separate landing page for each type of retreat you offer as this allows for targeted

marketing. On your landing page, provide all the information about your retreat and packages, but also leave space for potential guests to provide an email address. Offer an incentive to leave their email by offering a free printable booklet or planning guide. Once you secure their information, use it to continuously follow up with the customer. Nurture them to the point they are ready to schedule their event. When you follow up via email, focus on the benefits and experiences they can take advantage of. Be helpful, and build a bond. CONVERSATIONS WITH AMY CUDDY

BY KELLY HEITZ

Amy Cuddy isn’t supposed to be where she is today.

Win a copy of Cuddy’s best-selling book, Presence! Post a photo of you with this issue of Pulse on Instagram with #ISPAdoyou before Sept. 1.

Early in her college career, Cuddy suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident, and doctors said she would struggle to finish school. But she proved them wrong, and now she’s a successful social psychologist, professor at Harvard Business School, best-selling author of Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges, and keynote speaker at this year’s ISPA Conference & Expo. How did Cuddy overcome such incredible challenges to get where she is today? By learning to forget her fears and insecurities and project confidence, even when she didn’t feel it. Her book and TED Talk, which is one of the most-watched TED Talks of all time with over 41 million views, explain in detail her research on posture and body language and how we can use both to trick ourselves into feeling confident, even when we aren’t. In this month’s Conversations, we asked Cuddy about her book, her methods, and “faking it until you become.”

PULSE: One of your most popular quotes is “don’t fake it until you make it, fake it until you become.” How should people use this advice? Cuddy: The idea is that sometimes we need to fake being our best selves until we feel confident enough to truly reveal who we are. You’re not tricking anyone else; you’re tricking yourself into believing you can fully be you. After we’ve practiced doing this enough over time, we become the best version of ourselves that we can be. P: How can we convince ourselves to be confident, even when we know we are faking it? C: That’s where the body-mind connection becomes so important. When we get stuck in our heads trying to tell ourselves that we are confident when we don’t feel confident,

30

PULSE

August 2017

we’re facing a very daunting challenge. But, the relationship between certain body language and confidence is so hardwired that it works in both directions and it doesn’t involve a lot of mental gymnastics. By adopting powerful and confident postures, we’re allowing our bodies to do the work of telling our minds that we actually are confident. It may seem primitive, but that’s why it works. P: In your book Presence, you say that little nudges can help push us past our fears. Other than tweaking our body language, what nudges can we do on a daily basis? C: One of my favorites, and maybe this isn’t something that everyone faces every day, is to reappraise your anxiety as excitement. The idea of keeping calm when we’re feeling anxious is actually very hard to do. Because anxiety is a high-arousal emotion and calmness is a low-arousal emotion, our bodies find

it hard to make that switch from anxious to calm. But what our bodies and brains can do is change a negative high-arousal emotion into a positive high-arousal emotion. So, the next time you’re feeling anxious, rather than tell yourself to calm down, say to yourself that you’re excited. Research has shown that this is very effective. P: How do the methods you lay out in Presence help people become better leaders? C: When we are present – that is, when we are bringing our authentic best self to interactions with other people – we are liberating them to be present, as well. So as leaders, we should want to bring out the best in those who work with and for us. If we’re distracted, we simply can’t do that. People can’t be present and authentic with a leader who isn’t present and authentic with us. So when you are present and engaged it makes it much easier for others to reciprocate and that creates value for everyone. P: In addition to being a social psychologist and a professor at Harvard Business School, you are also a classically trained ballet dancer. How does ballet influence your work? C: Ballet and all forms of dance are really all about communication through body language. Without words, any audience can watch dance and infer the story. In a way, dance is the most evolved form of body language. P: Your book includes stories of people who saw your TED Talk and changed their lives. Do you have a favorite of these stories, and if so can you describe it? C: I have countless favorites so I will just share one and this is something that someone actually told me today. A woman who had been the victim of domestic violence for a long time and who had left that abusive relationship was trying to start from scratch in a new country. She told me that the lessons that she took from both my book and talks, she applies every day and, as she explains it, “they give me the confidence to believe that I deserve to have a better life and to make that happen.” This woman now shares her own story with others and told me that recently another domestic abuse survivor came to her and said, “I keep your picture on my desk as inspiration.” n

LET’S GET PERSONAL Favorite power pose: Vintage wonder woman—it’s classic. Greatest role model: My greatest role model is also one of my closest friends, Susan Cain. She thinks and cares so deeply and she doesn’t buy into rushing to get things done. She takes the time she needs to do them with love and do them well and at the same time, she never forgets the people she loves. You have a random day off, what do you do? Whether it’s a work day or not, I rarely start my day without sharing a cup of coffee with my husband, who hand grinds and makes a cup for me every morning. I would never give that up. After that, if I could be anywhere in the world, I would either be hiking or skiing in the mountains… probably in Colorado with my family. Favorite spa treatment: HydraFacial! Most interesting place ever visited: The most interesting is Lofoten, a Norwegian island above the Arctic Circle. DEDICATED CONTRIBUTOR 2017 ISPA CONFERENCE & EXPO have been tough to develop a comprehensive spa management curriculum. Without my ISPA family, launching and making our on-campus spa a success would have been a much more difficult task. ISPA helped me achieve many of the tasks I faced after reentering the industry as a professor. ISPA helps me succeed every day so, naturally, I wanted to do my part to help ISPA succeed. What was the most rewarding part of compiling the ISPA Academy?

With a project this size, I think the launch in March was the most rewarding. We had been working on the project for nearly two years, so to finally see the fruits of our labor was very exciting. To finally have a comprehensive collection of spa industry resources all in one place is really fantastic. Who do you hope benefits from the ISPA Academy?

I think anyone interested in the spa industry will benefit from the ISPA Academy. The resource contains so much interesting and enlightening content, that I believe anyone from new students to seasoned industry leaders can learn something. Academy content, including textbooks, industry articles, research, inspirations, and the new Spa Offerings (treatments and services) Encyclopedia content (found in the “Glossary Terms” section) has informative and inspirational content for all. 2017 ISPA CONFERENCE & EXPO

Ways to Get the Most Out of the ISPA Expo Discover the best of the spa industry on ISPA’s Expo Floor. With over 200 exhibitors and an estimated 60 new product launches each year, the Expo is the place to find innovative products and solutions for your spa. While the ISPA Expo is incredibly exciting, it can also be overwhelming. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your time on the Expo floor: Go in with a plan. It’s important to know what your spa needs before setting foot on the Expo floor. This will help you stay focused and make the connections that will benefit your business. Now that you’ve got a plan, make appointments with vendors ahead of time to get the most out of your time in the Expo. Log on to attendISPA.com to access a virtual Expo floor plan. Allow for extra time. If you have scheduled appointments, be sure that you leave enough padding in your schedule to make it to each one. The floor is large and creating cushion time will prevent you from stressing.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Remain open-minded. We know you already work with some amazing resource partners, but be sure to check out one of the 45 (and counting) exhibitors who are brand new to ISPA. Who knows, it could be the start of a beautiful partnership. Block out part of your time at the Expo to wander around and consider the booths of companies you are not yet familiar with. When you attend a presentation, ask your seatmates which companies or products excite them. If they attend the same presentation as you, chances are that they will have similar professional needs and interests. When you’re wandering, avoid approaching booths when they are packed. If you approach when it’s busy, the chances of you getting in to the right person are slim. Make a note to come back and in the meantime, head to a booth that is a bit emptier.

Win a copy of Pink’s best-selling book, To Sell is Human! Post a photo with #ISPA2017 on Instagram before Sept. 1.

For this month’s Ask the Expert, we dug a little deeper into how Pink’s most forwardthinking ideas have stood

the test of the fast-paced times we Pulse: In your book A Whole New Mind, you explain why the future is in the hands of the right brain, creative thinkers. That book was published 12 years ago. Do right brain thinkers still hold the keys to the kingdom? Pink: Pretty much. In that book, I argued that certain kinds of skills — linear, SAT, spreadsheet skills — were still necessary but no longer sufficient. They’ve become easy to outsource to low-wage countries and easy to automate. As a result, artistic, empathic, inventive skills were becoming the ones that mattered most. That’s still true. But what I didn’t expect was how quickly artificial intelligence was going to progress — selfdriving cars, facial recognition, and beyond. Artificial intelligence, I think, will begin nibbling away at some rightbrain skills, too. I don’t think that will happen all that much in the next, say, 10 years. But in the next 20 years, all bets are off. P: Do you think people have gotten better at using both sides of the brain as a result of the design-driven, storytelling world we now live in? DP: In many ways. Think about design. So many people in so many professions, now have at least a partial role in, say, designing a website or a social media profile or presentation. It

now live in and how those ideas will benefit the leaders in our industry. doesn’t mean that everyone is great at it, but that’s one skill that’s seeping into many jobs, even those that are not nominally “creative.” The same is becoming equally true for abilities like storytelling, composition, and empathy. They’ve become a larger component of many jobs. P: In Drive, you discuss the fact that people aren’t driven to work harder by monetary rewards, especially when creativity and decision-making skills are part of the work. Is this also a result of our shift in society towards the Conceptual Age? DP: First, it’s important to understand what the research says. It doesn’t say that people aren’t motivated by money. Money is a motivator. It just doesn’t work the way many people expect. Here’s what the science tells us: There’s a certain kind of reward that I call an “if-then” reward — as in “If you do this, then you get that.” If-then rewards are extremely effective for simple, routine, algorithmic tasks — processing paper, turning the same screw the same way on an assembly line. These kinds

of rewards get us to focus narrowly, which for this kind of work, is a plus. However, the same body of research tells us that ifthen rewards are far less effective for creative, conceptual work. Why? If-then rewards are narrow, but for these tasks we want an expanded perspective, a wider look. The big problem is that organizations tend to use if-then rewards for everything, rather than for the one category of tasks where they actually work. P: Why does the concept of human motivation interest you so much? DP: It’s definitely interesting to try to understand what people do. But why they do it takes the inquiry to a deeper and even more fascinating level. P: If you line up your books on a shelf, it seems like you have quiet the variety of interests. What story do you think your collective works tell? DP: I don’t think there’s a single story, but there is a common theme. All the books have to do with work. I’ve always been fascinated by work: what people do, why they do it, how they collaborate with others, what work means to them. We spend

half our waking hours at work, which makes it an incredible platform for understanding the human condition. P: Which of your books was the most interesting to research and write? DP: That’s like asking which of my three children is my favorite! At the moment, I’m enamored of my newest book, which will be out in January. It’s called WHEN: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. P: What do you hope ISPA members gain from your keynote presentation? DP: A couple of big ideas to understand their world and some specific takeaways for running their businesses. n

A Day in the Life! B Y A S H L E Y A LT

The life of a spa professional is a continuous cycle of daily responsibilities that help make the spa world go round. Pulse asks ISPA members to give us a sneak peek into their daily lives to help us understand the roles they play and the difference they make on a daily basis.

“Unquestionably the most important moment of his life pertaining to his career was the day he received a phone call from the White House with news that he had been chosen as President Obama’s inaugural poet.”

RICHARD BLANCO, POET

T

hey say every poet is writing one poem all their life, meaning figuratively, that every poet’s work is rooted in some kind of central obsession. If this is true, Richard Blanco’s obsession comes down to one word – home. “All that big word calls to mind with respect to my family, community, cultural identity, sexuality and all much more,” Blanco says. “I have been searching for ‘home’ all my life, personally, and through poetry.”Richard Blanco is one of the most beloved and influential poets and storytellers of today. Traveling the world uniting people to reconnect on the human experience, Blanco encourages us to embrace our differences in one another and find the beauty in diversity. As the poet, memoirist, public speaker and teacher likes to say, he was “made in

Cuba, assembled in Spain, and imported to the United States.” As much as Blanco loves writing poetry, it can be terrifying and frustrating and difficult to do so. Those are the challenges, though, that make the thrill of communing his self with the world all worthwhile. As a child Cuban immigrant raised in a working-class family, poetry wasn’t exactly encouraged growing up. “Art, and especially poetry, was not part of our lives,” Blanco remarked. “When the time came to decide on a major in college, I chose civil engineering and tabled my creative impulses for the moment.” And oddly enough, engineering is what paved the road to poetry. “I knew poetry was more than a curiosity or casual interest—it was love, a vocation,” he recalled. Unquestionably the most important moment of his life pertaining to his career was the day he received a phone call from the White House with news that he had been chosen as President Obama’s

inaugural poet. “At first, I was bewildered, wondering if it was some cruel joke a friend was playing on me,” he said. “Before any apprehension or pressure set in, I thought of my father, my mother, my grandparents – all their struggles and hard work to make a better life in America for themselves and my brother and me. I began to weep thinking, ‘This is because of them.’” Understanding that his story, along with many others, will always be a part of the American narrative is essentially what Blanco would like for people to take away from his poetry; that America is everchanging and fluid. “While sitting at the platform waiting for my name to be called to read my poem to the entire nation, for the first time in my life I knew I had a place at the American table.” In his day-to-day routine, writing is undoubtedly Blanco’s favorite part of the day. “I’m ‘addicted’ to poetry because every time I write a poem I learn something new about myself, my life and (CONTINUED ON PAGE 54)

the people in it,” Blanco told us. Here’s a look at a typical day in the life of Richard Blanco: ★ 10 – 11 am Wake up next my dog, Joey, microwave some espresso from the night before, and then brew another pot, and another! ★ 11 am – Noon Answer emails about everything from booking flights to speaking invitations to interviews. ★ Noon – 1 pm Walk Joey in the park, do errands in town ★ 1 – 2 pm Feed Joey. posts. Or write if I’m in an intense writing mode or obsessed with a particular poem that’s giving me trouble. ★ 5 – 6 pm Down-time – watch more reruns or news, and take a power nap ★ 7 – 8 pm Gym ★ 8 – 10 pm Walk, feed Joey. Shower (love my Tea Tree shampoo). Floss (hate it). Make dinner. Eat with my husband Mark and chat about each other’s day. ★ 10 pm – ??? Write, write, write at the kitchen table, in my office, sprawled on the floor with my cat, on the back porch, or in the bathroom – wherever and whatever it takes! attractively packaged and had nothing to say to men, who were 30 percent of the clientele at spas.” So, she began creating formulas in 1989 that would bring together traditional holistic treatments and the world of luxury beauty, which led to the creation of ESPA in 1993 and the extensive and continued development of ESPA’s luxury product line. “When I look back when I started ESPA, we were doing the things that are trending now—25 years ago,” Harmsworth notes. That forward-thinking approach combined with her passion and vision helped shape the spa industry into what it is today, which is why she is such a fitting recipient for the 2017 ISPA Visionary Award. “The joy of the ISPA Visionary Award is that it is recognition by my peers, which is hugely important to me. This is the culmination of an entire life’s work in an industry that I love and am continually passionate about.” As Harmsworth reflects on a lifetime of work in the industry, she can’t help but look to and be excited about what the future holds. “The spa industry is at an exciting crossroads. Spa is now mainstream so customer expectations are high, which will make the next era more challenging, but in a good way.” n

2. Always remember that it’s about your people. I would never be where I am today if I didn’t hire the best people in the industry and then let them do their jobs. 3. You have to plan, but don’t think too far ahead. You have to be versatile enough to change with the times. You haven’t a clue what’s coming around the corner, but that’s life! 4. Make the most of every opportunity. I didn’t plan a whole lot, but when opportunities came around, I jumped at them, which is what led me to where I am today.

What will we

IGNITE at this year’s

ISPA Conference & Expo?

It seems the ISPA Conference & Expo has become a catalyst for giving back. I’m constantly overwhelmed by the stories that have come from Conferences past about ISPA members coming together to give back. Take our partnership with the FEED initiative. With every single bag handed out at Conference, 10 school meals will be donated to children around the world. That’s over 16,000 meals! Proof, that when you bring us all together, we can accomplish incredible things. Thanks ResortSuite! There’s also last year’s Stand Up 2 Cancer campaign, the outpouring of support for charity: water, and I can’t help but give props to Michael Tompkins’ St.ART initiative, a transformative art festival in St. Louis, Missouri, that will take place next month. The idea and passion for the project was sparked at Conference and brought ISPA members from all over together to change the socio-economic conversation in one midwestern city. And it’s just the beginning... The kind of impact we can have on the world is astounding! What will we IGNITE at this year’s ISPA Conference & Expo? How will our

we are over the moon about our tech upgrade! See page 14 for more details.
