A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Sanford Community,

As we welcomed the changing of the leaves last fall, Sanford proudly introduced our most recent strategic vision, “Branching out. Growing Together.” This comprehensive plan set the stage for a year of remarkable achievements across several key areas:

Cultivating Educational Excellence

Fostering Financial Health

Nurturing an Inclusive Culture

Enriching our Future

The dedication of our community in the 2023-24 academic year has resulted in significant successes in each of these areas. This edition of the Sanford magazine is brimming with inspiring stories that highlight some of these accomplishments, reflecting our school’s collective effort and spirit.

At the core of Sanford, the student experience remains our top priority. We take pride in the fact that our programs continue to thrive, adapt, and evolve to meet the changing needs of our students.

One of the highlights of this year was the establishment of the Mitchell Family Scholars program, a testament to the generosity and commitment of Heather and Kenny Mitchell ’93. Their historic donation, the largest in Sanford’s history, not only underscores their dedication to our school but also significantly contributes to the enhancement of our endowment, which protects the longevity of Sanford’s commitment to education. The Mitchell Family Scholars program aims to enrich our student body by attracting talented individuals who bring diverse perspectives and excellence to our community.

Sanford has made significant progress since its humble beginnings almost a century ago. Our community has always been defined by resilience, unity, and a shared goal of achieving excellence for our students’ benefit. While donated and accrued resources support Sanford’s educational aims and opportunities, the generous, ongoing efforts of the Sanford community set us apart and enable us to achieve remarkable things. We are deeply grateful for the continuous support of the entire Sanford community. Your belief in our mission and contributions to our school make a real difference. Let’s continue to work together to build on ourtradition of excellence and ensure that Sanford remains a place where students can thrive and prepare for a bright future.

With gratitude,

Editor’s Note:

This edition of Sanford Magazine was prepared before the passing of beloved teacher and coach Jacquelin Pitts ’55. As one of her former students, I deeply value her impact on our community. My colleagues and I are committed to honoring her legacy. In our upcoming issue, we celebrate her invaluable contributions to Sanford School. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Kind regards,

Lucy Benson ’13

From Classroom to C-Suite: Paying Forward the Sanford Experience for Future Generations

When Kenny Mitchell ’93 took the stage at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France, just three weeks into his tenure as the global chief marketing officer for Levi Strauss & Co., he thought back to his Sanford Upper School English teacher. With only 48 hours to prepare after his CEO requested he speak in his place, Mitchell was thrust into the spotlight before a thousand industry trendsetters in the marketing world. There, he found himself back in a Sanford classroom, presenting before longtime Sanford English teacher Susan Dagenais and his Upper School classmates.

“She gave me the confidence that I had a voice,” Kenny recalled about a specific presentation he gave in Mrs. Dagenais’ class. It was a personal reflection in which he had to prepare to speak about his own life’s journey and how it related to the course content.

“I remember standing up, sharing and being super nervous,” he said, but after his presentation Mrs. Dagenais commended the excellent job he did and told him she didn’t notice his nerves a bit; he also received praised from his classmates. As a result, public speaking “turned into something that I no longer feared,” Kenny said.

After a sprawling career that took him through executive marketing positions at Gatorade, McDonald’s, Snap Inc. (owner of Snapchat), and now to the world’s most iconic jean brand, Mitchell said it’s not uncommon for him to lead meetings, hold townhall-style presentations and give keynote lectures.

“The comfort I have doing those things started very much in my classroom at Sanford with Mrs. Dagenais,” he said.

Some 30 years after graduating from Sanford, Kenny, and his wife Heather, a graduate of St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, both described how “transformational” their experiences were at independent schools.

“We talked early in our marriage that if one day we could give back in a meaningful way, we would do that,” Heather said. Both serve on the boards of their respective alma maters, but “we really felt like we wanted to have an impact that was far beyond us personally, that could have a lasting legacy,” she noted.

As recipients of financial aid, Heather emphasized that she and Kenny were able to belong to a community that they would have otherwise never known and which remains strongly intact deep into their adult lives.

That’s what drove them to work with Sanford’s

administration in developing the Mitchell Family Scholars Program — a scholarship that will fund up to 95% of a student’s tuition in each Sanford graduating class.

In 2023, the Mitchells made the largest individual donation in Sanford’s 93-year history, $1.5 million, to establish the scholarship fund and strengthen Sanford’s endowment. And their generosity is already making an impact.

The first Mitchell Family Scholar was admitted to Sanford’s class of 2027, and a new scholar will join the Upper School each of the next three years to ensure that Sanford will perpetually host four Mitchell Scholars.

Students who receive the scholarship must be strong academically, show strong character, demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities (such as the arts or athletics), and be unable to attend Sanford without significant financial assistance.

The Mitchells made their gift to Sanford’s endowment, a collection of invested funds that continuously generate income for the school, to ensure that their gift will benefit generations of Sanford students.

“Sanford’s endowment is critical for the financial health and security of the school,” explained Jaime Morgan, Associate Head of School for Advancement. “The larger the school’s endowment, the more funds are available to support families who need tuition assistance. We offer our incredible faculty and staff competitive salary and benefits packages.”

Building upon Sanford’s diversity was another priority for the Mitchells, who wanted to remove the financial barrier for a passionate, bright student to join the Sanford community.

Jamy Haughey, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Upper School physics instructor, said, “The generosity of this program would enable students from historically underserved and underrepresented communities to leave an indelible mark on our school.”

Each Mitchell Family Scholar “would contribute to the diversity of our community,” she said. “One student’s voice carries, and with our motto of No Talent Lies Latent, the perspective and voice of one student could have significant, positive, and lasting impacts on our community.”

Though they now live in southern California, Kenny and Heather reflected on their trip to Delaware in February for Kenny’s induction into the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame, during which they were able to meet the first scholarship recipient.

Kenny was a point guard at Sanford, winning two state championships before continuing to play basketball at Dartmouth and later professionally for a brief time. But “more gratifying than that the Hall of Fame induction was seeing that young person, knowing that they are contributing to the school as a student and part of the community,” Kenny shared. “The student had exactly the type of profile we were thinking about when we came up with the program.”

Heather said that just as the scholarship program bearing her family’s name “becomes a legacy for us, it also becomes a legacy for Sanford.”

“It goes beyond Sanford,” she said. It builds a community of “incredible people who will go out in the world and do incredible things.”

“We talked early in our marriage that if one day we could give back in a meaningful way, we would do that,” Heather said. Both serve on the boards of their respective alma maters, but “we really felt like we wanted to have an impact that was far beyond us personally, that could have a lasting legacy,” she noted.

New faces, same student-centered approach in Sanford’s College Counseling Department

In its more than 90 years of operation, 100% of Sanford students have been accepted to college.

This success is largely driven by Sanford’s personalized educational philosophy, embodied in its motto, No Talent Lies Latent, which permeates all aspects of student life and translates into Sanford’s college guidance.

That’s why when the two-person College Counseling Department was left vacant in the summer of 2023, Sanford faced the challenge of maintaining its rigorous, comprehensive college counseling program while preserving its student-centered approach to college guidance.

The solution came in the duo of a college admissions veteran, Director of College Counseling Heather Graber Stinson, and a Sanford specialist, longtime Sanford English instructor Pete Williams.

With 23 years of experience in college admissions at St. Lawrence University, Colgate University, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, and the Haverford School in Pennsylvania, Graber Stinson brings a wealth of knowledge to Sanford. As a longtime Sanford English faculty member, Williams draws on his decade-long experience of

teaching and mentoring Sanford students to guide them to the next step in their educational path.

Graber Stinson said Sanford has always followed best practices in college counseling, such as touring schools, hosting admissions officers on campus to speak with students, and beginning work on applications early. However, she stressed that it is the overall structure and culture of Sanford that enables its success in college counseling.

“Sanford is a place that encourages a lot of independence among students, which is really helpful for any post-secondary experience,” she said, adding that due to the size of Sanford’s community—the average class size is 13 students—” you have to show up, and you’re held to a high standard socially and academically.”

Sanford’s holistic college preparation begins early, with a challenging curriculum and strong faculty relationships starting even in Lower School. From the time students enter Upper School, weekly advisor meetings, wide-ranging extracurricular offerings and personalized academic support help students develop independence, self-reflection, and

interpersonal skills, ensuring they are well-prepared and responsible decision-makers by the time they begin applying to college.

In their junior year, students meet regularly with college counselors in a classroom setting to learn how to navigate the college admissions landscape, including walking through the application process, discussing the implications of applying to schools in- vs. out-of-state, explaining financial aid, and preparing resumes, essays and recommendations.

When Sanford’s college counselors begin meeting with students individually in their junior and senior years, they draw on their knowledge of schools themselves, course offerings, and the alignment between a student’s strengths and a school’s profile.

One way Sanford’s college counseling team encourages student well-being in the sometimesstressful college search is by focusing more on a student’s fit with a school rather than its ranking. This means taking into consideration each student’s compatibility with a school’s academic rigor, social environment, and financial feasibility for families.

When meeting individually with a student, Williams emphasizes his focus on the whole student rather than solely looking at numbers. “It’s not just about your SAT score,” he said. “It’s about what you’re passionate about and how you pursue that passion.”

Although Williams draws on his background as an English teacher to write letters of recommendation

and support students in preparing essays for their college applications, he said, “it goes way beyond that.”

“The priority for me was always my connection with the students,” Williams said. Over his 10 years of teaching English at Sanford, “I really developed the skill of connecting with young people, meeting them where they are, and trying to help them achieve their goals and meet their potential,” he said.

Graber Stinson said she has sought to connect with students in her first year at Sanford by integrating herself into the community beyond the College Counseling offices in Quigley Hall.

“You’re doing college counseling every day: building a rapport with the younger students by showing up to the musical, to the basketball game, an art show,” she said. “It’s nice to get to know students in their context before they even step foot in our space.”

By getting to know students as well as their aspirations and ambitions, the College Counseling team draws from their knowledge of the collegiate landscape to guide students to the next step, effectively acting as a bridge between their home at Sanford and the one they will find after graduation.

“They love this place,” Graber Stinson said. “If they had a really good Sanford experience, I want them to feel just as fond of a college or university as they do about this place.”

Sanford Beekeeping: A Hive of Activity

There’s a buzz on Sanford’s campus. It’s not just students trickling between academic buildings or running across athletic fields—it’s the hum of over 10,000 bees housed in hives downhill from Kidder Hall.

The club’s efforts are, quite literally, bearing fruit. Honey produced by the bees over the summer will be collected in the fall, and, once cleaned and jarred by club members, it will be sold to raise funds for more beekeeping suits and supplies.

Throughout the 2023–2024 school year, some 15 students in Sanford’s Beekeeping Club have gathered weekly to suit up in beekeeping attire, load their tools into a wheelbarrow, and, equipped with a smoker, march by the Cab Calloway Pond to inspect the three campus beehives each containing thousands of bees.

Victor Lowell ’24, one of the club’s founders, has been beekeeping with his grandfather since he was five years old. When he heard his classmates express interest in a beekeeping club at the end of the 2022–2023 school year, he realized he had the knowledge and skills to share his love for beekeeping with his peers.

Aware of the significant undertaking involved in starting an apiary, Victor began forming a proposal for the club in the early summer of 2023, listing needed supplies, outlining safety precautions, and setting educational goals for the club members.

“Our main goal was for students to get as much experience with handling the bees themselves because it’s kind of a hard hobby to get into,” Victor said. “The main goal was having a whole lot of suits and enough hives so that a bunch of students can go through hives and really see what the system is like.”

After students were prepared with extensive instruction on how to handle bees, they began their hands-on experience, regularly inspecting the hives donated to Sanford by Victor and his grandfather. They checked on the bees’ health, monitored the queen’s egg-laying activity, and looked out for pests.

Upper School Physics instructor Mickey Maley, the club’s faculty sponsor, emphasized the importance of the heavy student involvement in the club’s organization. “This club is meant to be student-run,” he said. “It’s incredible to see how much they have learned and grown in such a short time.”

The club’s efforts are, quite literally, bearing fruit. Honey produced by the bees over the summer will be collected in the fall, and, once cleaned and jarred by club members, it will be sold to raise funds for more beekeeping suits and supplies.

Mr. Maley praised the “entrepreneurial mindset” that the club develops in students by aiming to be self-sustaining, but he also identified the value of the ecological conversation prompted by beekeeping as a unique feature of the club.

The Beekeeping Club “gives us a chance to really talk about the place that biodiversity holds,” he noted, pointing out that students must learn to ask questions like, “Why did we plant these wildflowers versus other types? If we have more bees, does that change the way our ecosystem looks as we’re pollinating more?”

“It’s a bit larger than just the bees themselves,” Maley said. “The students have experiences that they can tell stories about later on in life.”

One such story involved unintentionally releasing bees inside a classroom when a hive, thought to be empty, was opened indoors. Yet “the club was trained on exactly what we should do,” Victor said.

Although an initial wave of alarm came over the students, they exited the room, shut the door, put on their beekeeping suits, and remedied the situation by closing the open hive and catching any loose bees. No one was stung.

Despite that close call, students have taken up beekeeping with a passion. With the knowledge they gained in the club, one student set up a beehive on their family farm. Others have explored creating hives in their towns or at their homes.

Though he graduated from Sanford in June and is now continuing his education at Thomas Jefferson University, Victor was able to bring his grandfather to campus to speak to the club during his senior year.

“It was heartwarming to see a group of people that cared so much about beekeeping and wanted to keep it going,” he recalled from watching his grandfather—the source of his own beekeeping knowledge—teach his attentive classmates how to inspect a hive. “At the time, I was the only beekeeper there, but it was really wonderful to see a group of people that I trust so much carry on the club, which I love.”

Encouraging Middle School Growth with Signature Programs

The Middle School experience at Sanford is marked by grade-level traditions that create formative memories that students carry with them for the rest of their lives. With new faculty entering the Middle School and the disruption in traditional programming caused by the pandemic, teachers were spurred to “create events shaped by their unique passions, talents, and professional experiences as educators,” Head of Middle School Emily Amendum shared.

She noted that such grade-wide events “develop risktaking, creativity, critical thinking, and problemsolving abilities that enable students to apply knowledge and abstract thinking skills to real-world situations.” Additionally, they provide students to work collaboratively among each other and emerge as leaders.

She noted that each event is a “touch point for a student’s time in the Middle School” that spans all grade levels and “where each student’s growth is truly visible for all community members who are lucky enough to attend.”

Fifth-Grade Film Festival and Author’s Tea

In the fifth grade, the newly-introduced Film Festival and Author’s Tea celebrated students’ creativity in filmmaking and writing. Students wrote mystery story series in groups of three, “publishing” them using Book Creator, an online tool that allows

students to create and share digital books. They then created movie trailers to entice audiences to read their stories which were presented in the Geipel Center for Performing Arts, where an award ceremony was held. Parents attending the presentation were then invited to collect autographs from students and ask them about their stories.

Middle School instructor Beth Whipple, one of the organizers of the event, said that engaging in the writing process and developing tech skills were central to the project’s learning outcomes.

“From brainstorming to writing drafts to peer editing, the project was very student-centered,” she said. “Students developed collaborative skills when connecting their story series and filming their trailers. They developed their tech skills while using iMovie on iPads.”

Parents, she added, were an integral part of the festival, acting as the audience during the awards ceremony and prompting conversation on the stories created by students.

Lena Mucchetti, parent of Matteo Muchetti ’31, said her family “loved the opportunity to see students dressed in their finest, walking the ‘red carpet,’ and each getting their moment in the spotlight. Gathering after the films to collect author autographs and enjoy community was a lovely way to cap off the project.”

Sixth-Grade Poetry Coffeehouse

In a cherished tradition, sixth graders chose and performed selected poems in the quad. The event follows a trend, woven throughout Middle School programming, of “incrementally growing students’ speaking and presentation in developmentally attainable ways,” said Amendum.

Families were invited to participate by listening and engaging with the students about their work, fostering a supportive community atmosphere in which students feel encouraged to share their work.

Laura Jezyk, parent of Ronan Jezyk ’30, said the Poetry Coffeehouse was “a beautiful event that helps the students gain self-confidence through poem selection, analysis, memorization, and the courage to speak in front of a crowd of peers and parents.”

“My child was so proud of the work he did and I am amazed at how much effort and interest he poured into the project,” she said.

Seventh-Grade GEMS Project

A new interdisciplinary unit introduced in seventh grade, the GEMS Project (combining global studies, English, math and science), enabled students to research and propose solutions to global issues outlined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which address global inequality, climate change, and threats to peace.

Students analyzed and discussed global problems in each of their core classes. The project then culminated with student presentations on their proposed solutions, acknowledging the global, local and individual impacts they can have as agents of change.

After the project’s first edition, seventh grade instructor Anthony Bushek, an organizer of the initiative, described the project as “a great success.” Students “met and even exceeded our expectations,” he said. “We raised the bar high for them because we knew that they were able to achieve our lofty aspirations.”

Bushek explained the interdisciplinary approach to the project, detailing how research on issues began in students’ global studies class. Gathered data was then analyzed in Math classes and used to create graphs in Science classes. Finally, students wrote speeches for their presentations in their English classes, creating TED Talk-style presentations for parents.

The GEMS project will become “a badge of honor for our middle schoolers to have accomplished,” Bushek said, noting his excitement to see “how our students who have already completed the GEMS project will continue to advocate and strive for the changes that they presented in their projects.”

“I have no doubt that our first batch of students, and the many more to come, will affect positive change at Sanford School and beyond,” he said.

Eighth-Grade Science Fair & Quiz Bowl

Eighth graders cap off their time in the Middle School with two memorable events: the Science Fair and a new initiative that draws parents into playful competition with their children through a quiz bowl-style event, titled, “Are You Smarter Than Your Eighth Grader?”

For the science fair, students worked for four months researching, designing and performing their own scientific experiments. Professional scientists and engineers from the area served as the judging panel

Each event is a “touch point for a student’s time in the Middle School” that spans all grade levels and “where each student’s growth is truly visible for all community members who are lucky enough to attend.”

and were “blown away by the level of science our students were able to achieve,” said eighth-grade science instructor Jillian Wharton.

Wharton said that a main goal of the fair is “to have students understand that the purpose of a scientific experiment is to learn from mistakes” and to develop “a strong appreciation for what it takes to run a welldesigned experiment.”

She noted the incredible creativity of students expressed through the selection of their experiments. One project studied the effect of different phrases and tones of voice on the growth of mold. The winning project, created by Nico Muchetti ’28, focused on rocket projectiles.

Are You Smarter Than Your Eighth Grader?

After showing off their skills before science professionals, eighth-graders prove their knowledge to their parents at the “Are You Smarter Than Your Eighth Grader” event.

The one-night event required parents to sign up, form a team and compete in a trivia challenge consisting mainly of topics covered during the school year.

Wharton said the faculty “wanted to have something special and specific to our eighth-graders that would involve their families in a low-stakes, lots-of-fun kind of way.”

In its first edition, almost every student team beat out every parent team, she noted, but not without some friendly competition.

Wendy Ottenbacher, parent of Ryan Gipe ’28, said the kids “attempted to fool us by saying a wrong answer loudly,” though “it only worked part of the time,” adding that the event was a “fun night for all ages.”

Michelle Berkley-Ayres, parent of Alyss Ayres ’28, said while her team did not beat all the other parent teams, “our kids beat everybody!”

“It was rigged from the beginning!” she claimed.

Sanford Class of 2024

On June 7th, 2024, Sanford School celebrated its 88th Commencement Ceremony in the newly renovated Class of 1955 Amphitheater. This ceremonial landmark was especially significant as it honored the largest graduating class in Sanford’s history, with eighty seniors receiving their diplomas from school leaders: Head of School Mark Anderson, Head of Upper School Abbi Smith, and President of the Board of Trustees R. Jason Russell.

In his faculty address, Jeff Molush, a performing arts faculty member, urged the graduates to value their time and grasp every opportunity that comes their way. Students Morgan Wilson and Amanrai Kahlon delivered compelling student addresses. A highlight of the ceremony was a duet by Sanford ‘Lifers’ Sean Keiser and Lily Tomeo, complemented by musical performances from the senior choir members.

Peter graduated from the Sanford School in 2004, having attended from 10th to 12th grade after finishing Upland Country Day School in 2001. He then went to the University of Delaware and, at 19, earned a B.S. summa cum laude in finance in just four semesters. He later received an M.A. in political science and international relations and an M.S. in finance.

Starting in the fall of 2008, he began teaching courses in the Department of Finance while still a student. From the fall of 2015, he also taught in the Department of Business Administration. Over more than fifteen years, he has taught numerous sections of Introductory Finance, Corporate Finance, Investment Theory and Portfolio Management, Entrepreneurial Finance, Markets, Financial Institutions, and other finance seminars at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Outside academia, he owns and runs several businesses in logistics (IronLinx Fulfillment and IronLinx Transportation), agricultural packaging materials (SRILX Products), information technology (Qnectus), and eCommerce (Greenville Ventures and GV Partners). These businesses collectively employ over 100 people locally.

His wife, Dr. Xiaoxia Lou (Professor, Department of Finance, University of Delaware), and he have two daughters attending Sanford, Valerie ’31 and Victoria ’33. Though he seems hobby-free at this point in life, he and his wife stay busy with their daughters’ budding golf careers and maintain memberships at Fieldstone Golf Club and Vicmead Hunt Club/Bidermann.

RETIREMENTS

Dear Sanford Community,

This spring we celebrated the remarkable careers of two educators, Nina Silverman-Weeks and Candyce Hublein-Pizzala. I am personally filled with a deep sense of gratitude for their service, dedication, and the impact they have made on our school and its students. Their influence has been felt by all of us in the Sanford community.

Nina Silverman-Weeks has graced our art department for over 32 years. Her unique ability to inspire and adapt has enriched Sanford’s programs, making art an integral part of our students’ lives. As Fabienne Daniels stated, “Nina’s love for our students and her ability to gently push them to their full potential made her class a unique place to learn and grow. Her dedication to the arts and excellence in education best practices has enriched our programs and left a lasting mark on our community.”

Candyce Hublein-Pizzala, having dedicated 38 years to nurturing the minds of our Lower School students, embodies the essence of a Sanford teacher. Her genuine passion, dedication, and caring approach have touched the lives of many. Brittany Elia shares, “To teach with Candyce and witness the impact she had on so many students’ lives has been such a privilege. Candyce’s focus on students, thoughtfulness, and creativity have helped countless Sanford students thrive, leaving a legacy of love, learning, and achievement.”

Both Nina and Candyce have been pillars of our community, not only as educators but as mentors, colleagues, and friends. Their commitment to Sanford and its families is unparalleled, and their departures mark the end of an era, leaving a void that will be hard to fill. As Betty O’Regan aptly puts it, “You’ve worked so hard and given so much of yourselves to others; now it’s time to enjoy doing whatever you want EVERY DAY!”

As we bid farewell to these two outstanding educators, let us remember the lessons they have taught us, the joy they have brought into our lives, and the countless ways they have made Sanford a better place. Their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Sanford Warriors.

Congratulations, Nina and Candyce, on your well-deserved retirement. Thank you for your positivity, passion, and profound impact on our community. You will be dearly missed.

With gratitude,

SANFORD ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Dear Sanford Community,

I am thrilled to celebrate the success of the 2023-2024 Sanford Fund! With your support, our community came together and raised over $640,000. These funds are not optional—they are vital in shaping the unique educational environment that sets our school apart.

Sanford’s theme of the 2023-2024 school year was “well-being.” Students, faculty, staff and families were challenged to think about what we each need for our own well-being—and for that of our community. The well-being of the Sanford experience relies on the generosity of all of us. Each year 100% of our faculty and staff give a gift to the Sanford Fund showing our deep commitment and belief in what we do on campus each day. Our Board of Trustees leads the way by making Sanford a philanthropic priority for their families. Current families are asked to give a meaningful contribution to show their support and appreciation for all Sanford does for their children. Alumni give in memory of beloved teachers and their own experiences on our campus. Each gift is critical to Sanford’s ongoing success.

A few highlights from the 2023-2024 Sanford Fund:

For the 25th consecutive year 100% of Sanford faculty and staff gave a gift to the Sanford Fund. This unique level of commitment truly sets us apart. Parent participation increased by an incredible 20% over the prior year. Through our Parent Participation Challenge, over half of our current families gave a gift.

The Classes of 1962, 1974, 1980, and 2005 collectively donated the largest amounts to the Sanford Fund.

The Classes of 1989 and 2008 had the greatest number of donations.

The Classes of 1955 and 1957 had the highest alumni participation rates. In addition to the Sanford Fund, $930,000 was raised in new commitments to restricted projects, facility improvements and endowed funds. These gifts are critical to ensuring Sanford is able to continue providing the very best educational experience to our students and exceptional work environment for our faculty and staff.

Your generosity is more than just a gift—it’s the key that unlocks the full potential of our students. In a community where we firmly believe that ‘No Talent Lies Latent,’ your contributions are essential to Sanford’s well-being.

On behalf of all our students, faculty and staff, thank you to all those who have supported Sanford. It is truly a team effort that we all give back to a school that has given us each so much.

As we begin the 2024-2025 school year, I am excited about what lies ahead and look forward to sharing with you as the year progresses.

With gratitude,

SANFORD ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Dear Sanford Community,

It is with great pleasure that I write to you on behalf of my fellow Sanford trustees. As you will read in this issue of our 2024 Annual Report, Sanford continues to perform extremely well. Our Board of Trustees is proud to partner with our Head of School, Mark Anderson, as we lead our school to grow stronger and better each year.

We thank you for contributing to Sanford’s success. Our Sanford Fund exceeded our goal and raised $640,000 in essential funds. These dollars allow Sanford to meet the school’s annual operational needs; more importantly, the Sanford Fund supports the teachers and programs our students and families value and adore.

In addition to the importance of our current financial health, the Sanford Board is focused on the long-term health of our school; this includes fostering our community’s future growth and success.

We are proud of our school and the success Sanford has accomplished this year and the past several years. As Sanford continues to grow its endowment, which is $12.1M as of June 2024, and improve its campus and facilities, we look forward to including you and all members of our Sanford School community in these efforts.

As we all know, Sanford is a very special school community. My fellow Sanford Trustees and I are grateful for your support of our school.

Sanford Home & School Association

The Home & School Association enhances Sanford School by fostering strong connections between parents and the school through various initiatives and events. Its goals include engaging parents in the school community via open communication, organizing educational and social events, and supporting fundraising efforts with special events. We are deeply thankful to the Home & School Leadership Team for their dedicated service: Rebecca Wasniewski as President, Paige Russell as Vice President, Veronica Chavez as Secretary, and David Farone as Treasurer. This team was crucial in revitalizing the Sanford School parent community after the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, reshaping our engagement within the school.

They’ve set a strong foundation for the 2024-2025 leadership: Treasurer David Farone is joined by Christine Ramsey as President, Lisa Reed ’99 as Vice President, Amanda Denlinger as Secretary, and Meghan Carney and Toni Durbano as Auction Co-Chairs.

The 2024 Home & School Auction was a huge success! This year’s auction occurred at the Delaware Museum of Nature & Science. With the combined support of volunteers, sponsors, donors, and the Sanford community, we raised an astounding $135,000! These dollars will fully fund the Home & School Association’s 2024-2025 budget, financially support summer professional development for faculty and staff, and provide campus-wide and programmatic updates.

Pulling off an event of this magnitude requires a group of committed and skilled parent volunteers. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Home & School Auction Committee and all our auction volunteers for making this event yet another success.

Athletic Awards

Dear Sanford Community,

As I reflect on the past year, I appreciate the opportunity to celebrate our successes and identify areas for growth. The summer is a great time to reflect on our success and create goals for the upcoming year. The dedication of our student-athletes, particularly the leadership shown by our graduating seniors and the active involvement of our underclassmen, has been instrumental in our success this year.

I want to thank our coaches for their commitment, expertise, and mentorship, as well as our students, parents, faculty, and staff for their continued support. The success of the athletic program is a collective effort, with vital contributions from our Buildings and Grounds crew, Ted Rosenthal for his exceptional photography, the Sanford Stream Team, Assistant Athletic Director Hughes Barber, and Athletic Trainer Taylor DiGiovine

This year, we celebrated significant accomplishments:

106 all-conference selections and 19 all-state selections.

16 student-athletes have committed to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

36 student-athletes were recognized for participating in a sport each season.

41 senior athletes received the Varsity Letter Awards, earning three or more varsity letters in a single sport.

Tyler Edwards and Brady Fox received the Sanford W. Sawin, Jr. Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in athletics.

Bridget Caldwell and Brady Bollman were named Sanford Athletes of the Year.

The MacKelcan Award was presented to Scarlett Helmecki and Henry Stenta, who have participated on a Sanford sports team in all 12 high school seasons.

The Cross Country team achieved third place at the D2 DIAA State Meet.

The Girls’ Basketball team won the conference title for the 23rd year in a row and made the state semi-finals at the “BOB.”

The Boys’ Basketball team secured the conference title and advanced to the state quarterfinals.

The Swim team produced two state champions, Carson Kalish and MJ Hoban, and another third-place finish for the boys’ team.

Sanford Baseball defended its DISC Championship, and Brady Fox was named DE Player of the Year.

The track team’s 4x800 relay won the all-division state championship.

Girls’ Soccer claimed its second DISC championship in three years, and Marisa Muller was named DE Coach of the Year.

Boys’ Lacrosse was honored as the DE Sportsmanship Team of the Year.

We are proud of our athletes and coaches for representing Warrior Nation with pride and excellence. I look forward to our night games later this fall.

GO, WARRIORS!

STATE CHAMPIONS

For the first time in program history, we proudly celebrate a boys state champion in swimming. Carson Kalish ’25 triumphed in both the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard butterfly while MJ Hoban ’24 secured the state title in the 50 yard freestyle. Together, these athletes have reshaped the Sanford record books, holding ten of the eleven swimming records. As a team, the Sanford boys’ placed third in the state for the second year in a row.

In just their second season with an outdoor track and field program, the boys’ 4x800m relay team captured the state championship title. Congratulations to Henry Stenta ’24, Daniel Brake ’25, Tegan Kovacs ’25, and Lazo Slijepcevic ’25 who not only won the race also recorded the sixth fastest time in Delaware’s history, setting a new Meet of Champions record by clocking in at 7:51.75.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Brady Fox ’24, has committed to playing Division 1 Baseball at UMBC. This year, he earned the title of Delaware’s Baseball Player of the Year and led his team to another DISC Championship victory. Brady’s performance with Sanford is highlighted with a .455 batting average, 45 RBIs, a 1.21 ERA, and 190 strikeouts.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Our Head Girls’ Soccer Coach, Marisa Muller has been honored as the Delaware High School Coach of the Year and the Delaware Independent School Coach of the Year. At our end of year faculty meetings, Coach Muller was recognized with the Waterman Award for Excellence in Coaching. Under Coach Muller’s guidance the Girls’ Soccer team won their second DISC Championship in three years.
