Dear Sanford Community,

The 2022-23 school year marks my 12th year serving as Head of School at Sanford School. The start of this school year has been unlike anything I’ve experienced during my time as a leader or teacher. Our campus's positive energy is palpable and infectious (pun intended!).

After more than two years of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, our community wants to come together and be together. Like schools all over the country and world, we had to separate, distance, and mask. I’m proud of how successfully Sanford navigated those challenging times. While we found ways to keep students engaged and learning, the experience wasn’t the same for all members of our school community.

We can now see smiling teachers’ and students’ faces; parents and families can gather on campus for events, and we can learn and teach in the personal ways central to the Sanford experience — the world is beginning to feel normal again. Thank goodness.

Beyond the recognition for how hard Sanford faculty, staff, and school leaders worked these past several years, there is much to celebrate at Sanford in 2022-23.

We opened with a school-wide enrollment of 655 students; the largest Sanford has been in many years. Most grade levels are on a waitlist, as we are at capacity for our program.

Sanford's fundraising was also a success story in 2021-22:

Annual Fund $652,295 Endowment $500,000 Capital Projects $860,517 Auction $60,000 Total $2,090,564

Our Sanford community, once again, generously supported the school financially. Sanford continues to benefit from this thoughtful giving. Truly we wouldn’t be the school we are today without you.

We opened the Michael and Nancy Pia Center for Creativity at Hebb Hall this fall. The 86-year-old building received an incredible facelift. Situated directly on our Sanford Quad, the Pia Center now boasts two art classrooms, two French classrooms, a ceramics studio, a student support room, and a beautiful outdoor deck for students to use that overlooks Chapel Valley. We continue to strive to be excellent stewards of Sanford’s resources.

In the pages of this magazine, you’ll read about how our community continues to “opt in” to school life at Sanford. Perhaps the ultimate silver lining of the challenges that we faced during COVID, we are all that much more grateful for all of the things Sanford does for our students and families.

We are grateful for your support.

Warmly, Mark J. Anderson

How a Sanford Family Opts In

1 FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes

For over 92 years, Sanford has encouraged students and faculty to take risks, try something new, and be engaged with the life of the school. The motto No Talent Lies Latent speaks to this core belief that by becoming involved, students will develop aptitudes they may never have known existed.

The recent pandemic stripped the community of what is considered “normal,” such as the traditional morning meeting, discussion-based classes at large conference tables, eating with friends in the Dining Hall, singing in music class, or participating in clubs and sporting activities. Students were not able to engage with the school or one another in the ways they were used to. With our world in a state of uncertainty, our community was forced to “opt out” of opportunities and traditions that are fundamental to the Sanford experience.

This year, our community is encouraged to “opt in” – engage with each other and the school, to renew the sense of warmth, belonging, and connection. This family has chosen to “opt in,” re-energizing Sanford’s spirit through their gifts of time, talent and treasure.

FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes 2

As a complement to the mindfulness initiative, Michael and Nancy stepped forward with a gift to renovate the historic Kenneth D. Jones Memorial Chapel, providing the Sanford community with a reflective space to gather on campus.

3 FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes

Michael and Nancy Pia began their Sanford journey as parents when their daughter Lisa ‘99 attended Sanford in 1995, and daughter Amy ‘02 followed three years later. As parents, they were fully engaged in school life and supported their daughters as they explored their interests. Whether on the sidelines of athletic events or hosting “the photo party” before the prom, Michael and Nancy were staples of the Sanford community.

Twenty-three years later, Michael and Nancy are now proud grandparents to Abby ‘30, Tyler ‘32, Sawyer ‘32, and Cohen ‘35. They continue to support their grandchildren by attending concerts, ceremonies, presentations, and GrandSpecial Days. They have also chosen to opt in through their family foundation.

In 2019, Nancy approached Sanford about implementing a mindfulness initiative. Having personally experienced the benefits of mindfulness and observing its effects on her own grandchildren, she wanted to pay it forward by helping Sanford implement a schoolwide focus on teaching students to settle their minds and become more present. Years later, these skills are still practiced at Sanford. Kindergarteners can be seen “belly breathing” during their morning circle, and all school faculty meetings always start with a mindful moment.

As a complement to the mindfulness initiative, Michael and Nancy stepped forward with a gift to renovate the historic Kenneth D. Jones Memorial Chapel, providing the Sanford community with a reflective space to gather on campus. Their efforts revitalized a landmark on campus that had become uninhabitable. As a nondenominational school, Sanford’s Chapel is inclusive for all students to practice mindfulness and find sanctuary in a quiet, peaceful place deep in the heart of Chapel Valley.

Ever the philanthropists, Michael and Nancy were eager to talk with school leaders about what other projects were on the horizon. When she learned that Hebb Hall, which housed middle and lower school art classes, was in desperate need of renovations, Nancy’s love of creative and artistic expression took hold. After their first tour of the building with facilities manager Kevin Needham, it was clear that this project was their perfect fit.

Hebb Hall was built in 1936 and named after the school that Sanford’s founder Ellen Q. Sawin attended, Miss Hebb’s School in Wilmington. In the beginning, Hebb Hall served as the Lower School.

FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes 4
“Thank you to Mike and Nancy for generously supporting this project. You have transformed our campus and created something beautiful that generations of Sanford students will enjoy.” -Mark Anderson, Head of School

“The newly renovated Pia Center is a superb example of creative problem solving. This old structure was reimagined and redesigned to best serve our students.”

5 FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes

As the school expanded, it housed lower and middle school art classes. Over time, the building was used for several purposes, the second floor became storage space, and the 86-year-old classrooms had become outdated. Kevin Needham created the vision for what the building could be through Michael and Nancy’s support. The partnership blossomed, and the nine month renovation began.

The Michael and Nancy Pia Center for Creativity at Hebb Hall officially opened with a ribbon cutting and celebration during this past Homecoming Weekend. The final reveal brought Nancy to tears, “Thank you for asking us to be on your team to make this amazing creative space a reality.” Two larger, brighter classrooms now share the first floor, where art classes will continue to take place. The second floor now houses two French classrooms as well as a designated space

for learning services and support. A large open deck overlooking Chapel Valley was added, creating a completely new space for students to engage in artistic creation.

The result you see today is a bright, modern, well-designed space which will be home to Sanford students and faculty for many years. As Head of School Mark Anderson stated at the reopening, “The Pia Center for Creativity is a true Sanford Success story, one that combines a nod to our rich history, loyal, generous support, hard work, and creativity to maximize Sanford’s resources.”

FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes 6

The transformational generosity of the Pia family does not end with Chapel Valley and Hebb Hall. Michael and Nancy strongly believe in passing the power of kindness, giving, and volunteering onto their children and grandchildren. The legacy they have established has made a profound impact on Sanford and will continue to do so for generations to come.

Amy Pia Clark ’02

Amy opts into the Sanford experience as an alumna, parent volunteer, Home & School grade rep, auction co-chair and guest teacher. She is mom to Abby ‘30 and Tyler ‘32.

“Amy Clark leads with Sanford spirit and bleeds blue and gold. When it comes to supporting Sanford, Amy’s answer is always an enthusiastic YES! She involves herself as a mom, teacher, tour guide, volunteer, and more — giving 100% — expecting nothing in return. Generous with her time and talent, Sanford is truly a better place because of Amy.”

-Libbie Zimmer, Head of Lower School

“Jamie Clark is a true Sanford Warrior. His positive attitude and great work ethic are assets to Sanford School. Whether it is on the baseball diamond, in the weight room, or teaching Lower School Physical Education, Jamie is dedicated to his students, athletes, and colleagues. Jamie is a pleasure to work with each day.”

-Shannon Helmecki, Physical Education & Health Chair & Instructor.

“I first met Amy on the field hockey field during preseason. Her older sister Lisa had asked my friends and me to reach out to her and welcome her to Sanford, implying that she was shy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Amy is a bright light, an outstanding athlete, an incredibly kind and humble friend, and has the most hilarious sense of humor. I am so lucky and grateful to call her my friend for over 25 years.”

-Jaime Morgan ‘02, Associate Head of School for Advancement

Jamie Clark

Jamie Clark teaches prekindergarten through sixth grade physical education and health. He is the head varsity baseball coach and runs the strength training program for Upper School students during the fall and winter seasons. As Amy’s husband, and dad to Abby ‘30 and Tyler ‘32, they are a committed Sanford family.

“Coach Clark loves baseball. His passion and excitement for the game are infectious. As a coach, he is tough but has helped us improve our game. It was fun to be a part of the Sanford baseball team as we became competitive in our games thanks to the coaching we received.”

-Brogan Yates ‘21

Pia Reed ’99

Lisa is the mom to Sawyer ‘32, and Cohen ‘35. Lisa is active in the Sanford community as a grade rep and chair for the Home & School Auction.

“It was such a pleasure to volunteer alongside Lisa for the Home & School Association. Lisa exudes warmth and joy… spending time volunteering with her always raised my spirits. Lisa’s tireless efforts on the auction, alongside her co-chairs Amy Pia Clark and Sarah Noonan-Davis brought our community back together during a time when so many struggled to reconnect after COVID. Her commitment to the Sanford community shows through her steadfast support of Home & School.” -Laura Giardina

“Lisa’s enthusiasm and love of Sanford is contagious. Not only does she “opt in” by volunteering year after year, but she helps to foster a great sense of community, belonging, and inclusivity among the lower school families.”

-

“It warms my heart to think about all the Sanford students, including my four grandchildren, who will benefit from this magnificent space. Whether they’re drawing, painting, problem-solving, making a mess, or just having fun, this will be the most amazing thing we’ve ever done for children at Sanford…”

How the Sanford Community Opts In

How a Student Opts In Third grader Kathryn Flathers ‘32 loves to problem solve, create and spend time with her friends. As the start of the school year drew closer, Kathryn remembered her experience starting at a new school and had sympathy for her classmates. Her love of art and desire to help others inspired her to make the Buddy Bench. Kathryn proposed to art instructor Nicole Liss a space where students who may be feeling lonely or unsure could easily find a friend. When students see someone on the bench, they know they can invite them to play.

In true Sanford fashion, the entire community came together to make Kathryn’s idea a reality. Upper School woodworking students crafted the bench, which was then decorated with the fingerprints of each Lower School student. Kathryn concludes, “I hope it makes new students feel happy and they can find many new friends!”

How a Teacher Opts In

Candyce Pizzala has been an integral part of Sanford for 37 years and has taught first and third grade during her tenure. Candyce’s dedication to Sanford’s mission and her students remains strong.

“I love Sanford! I feel like it is an amazing community and such a big part of my life.

Being a teacher is a huge part of my identity.” When looking back on her career, Candyce realizes Sanford has always been a special place. “I remember thinking early in my career, ‘every school must be like this,’ but it’s not. Sanford is a unique and special place. I always want to make a child feel safe, valued, and respected in the same way the school makes me feel.” Candyce has a talent for creating a comfortable, loving, learning environment to help children grow academically and personally. For over 20 years, Sanford’s faculty and staff have led the way with our Annual Fund with 100% participation. Candyce explains the reason behind her contribution, “It goes back to the idea that it’s not how much you give, it’s that you give. It is important for those inside the community to support our students. At the same time, it’s also important to show the outside community that we are dedicated to our students because we truly believe in them and Sanford’s mission.”

How Families

Can Opt In At Sanford, our families are the key to success both in and out of the classroom, and we have always prided ourselves on our outstanding community. When parents choose Sanford for their child, we hope they also choose the school for themselves. Coming together to build connections, create lasting friendships, and support teachers and students is a hallmark of being a Sanford parent. Unfortunately, the disruption of COVID-19 made these goals especially challenging. Connecting parents to one another and the school was incredibly difficult without a way to safely gather socially, attend school events and performances, and share Sanford traditions.

The Home & School Association aims to rebuild our sense of community and belonging. With a collective 23 years of Sanford experience, the leadership team is eager to provide many opportunities for parents to come together socially and help the school.

President Rebecca Wasniewski shares, “The mission of Home & School is quite simple. We are a volunteer parent organization that works to keep our families connected with our school by hosting events throughout the year. We hope you will opt in and join us. Come and meet new friends, have fun, stay engaged, and make memories.”

Rebecca and her leadership team, Paige Russell, Vice President. David Farone,Treasurer, and Veronica Chavez, Secretary, have added over ten new events to this year’s calendar to find “something for everyone.”

As an extension of the of the leadership team, 50 grade representatives will serve as liaisons in each grade to encourage participation and to help families who joined the school during the pandemic learn more about unique Sanford traditions.

How Alums Can Opt in

The Sanford Young Alumni Board (YAB) is comprised of recent graduates looking to build a bridge between the existing Sanford community and alumni. They create and support new initiatives across two committees: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Alumni Engagement, Philanthropy & Connection. These committees help recent alumni foster their relationship with the Sanford community.

Bryan McLellan ‘14, President of the Sanford Young Alumni Board, says that after graduating, he has enjoyed returning to Sanford and reconnecting with familiar faces. So when YAB was formed, he knew it would be an excellent opportunity to stay involved with Sanford despite living several hours away.

As President, Bryan leads young alumni in their quarterly meetings over Zoom. “I am very proud to be a member.... It is fulfilling to contribute to a program focused on improving the Sanford experience for others. I’ve enjoyed hearing and sharing my thoughts with other alums. It’s phenomenal to reconnect and learn what everyone has been up to after graduation. It has been incredibly refreshing to listen to the variety of perspectives from everyone on such different paths since graduation. With several different trajectories after Sanford, we are bringing our experiences together to create ways for Sanford to continue connecting with recent alums.”

SANFORD THANKS

CHERYL FLEMING The Voice of Sanford

For 17 years, Cheryl Fleming served Sanford as our Director of Communications and Marketing; for the past seven years, she oversaw our technology department. Cheryl brought a creative vision and flow to her work. Her talents modernized Sanford’s brand and greatly improved how we utilize technology in and out of the classroom.

When I began working with Cheryl in 2011, she was brimming with ideas of what she wanted to do with our marketing efforts. Quite fearlessly, Cheryl led a website redesign project, launched a rebranding effort, and made 1:1 computing a reality in all three divisions.

While technology was not originally part of her professional skill set, Cheryl is adaptable, and as the years passed, she continued to evolve Sanford’s technological needs. Cheryl became so proficient and adept at the tech side of her role that she was invited to serve on the advisory board of Blackbaud (the provider of most Sanford online platforms) and provide counsel to both the company and independent schools across the country.

Cheryl Fleming left a lasting legacy through countless hours of dedication and energy at Sanford School. The way we tell our Sanford story and utilize all types of technology across campus is largely due to her leadership.”

Heart of Sanford

When asked what comes to mind when Sanford team members think of Laura Gaylor, the immediate answer is her love of family and Sanford School. In 2006, when the Gaylor family chose Sanford for their son, Reese ‘12, followed shortly after by JD ‘21, they did not know at the time that the school would become their home. In 2007, Laura joined the Sanford team as a school receptionist. Her warmth and kindness set the tone for what to expect on our campus. Laura quickly became a faculty and staff favorite – someone who would listen, lend a helping hand, and always share a laugh. Laura’s sense of humor was second to none.

In 2014, Laura moved into the Development Associate role with enthusiasm and a desire to make an impact. With Laura’s guidance, the Home & School Association flourished under new leadership and increased numbers of volunteers. Under Laura’s jurisdiction, each event represented Sanford with warm elegance.

Laura’s dedication and hard work have left an imprint on so many of our community traditions and events. We are grateful for Laura’s dedicated service to our school. Her impact will always be felt in our sunny hills.”

For 23 years, Bruce Pill gently guided students in the classroom, on athletics fields, and off campus. His positivity impacted his students, advisees, athletes, and his peers.

As a veteran math teacher, Bruce challenged our most talented students and built confidence in those who needed it. He instilled self-assurance in his students and helped foster an appreciation for mathematics.

A man with strong convictions, Bruce was instrumental in developing and implementing Sanford’s MLK Day of Service. For years he outlined the day’s activities, arranged bus transportation, and directed the day that took months of careful planning and execution to run as smoothly as it always did.

For many years, Bruce led the Cokesbury Club, where seventh and eighth graders would visit the residents. Steadfast relationships were made, and some students continued volunteering at Cokesbury after their tenure in the Middle School. During COVID times, students and their older friends would enjoy Zoom Bingo opportunities spearheaded by Bruce and enjoyed by all.

Bruce encouraged students, faculty and staff to join him in Sanford’s chapel to share quiet reflection and meditation. These times were very special for those who chose to participate.

Bruce shared his message in a quiet manner, but it was heard loud and clear. Sanford will miss his direction and commitment to the community and his students. We wish Bruce all the best and sincerely appreciate how he strengthened the Sanford community throughout his tenure.”

-Emily Amendum, Head of Middle School

It’s not about the outcome; it’s about the process.’ These words dictated Jim Barnaby’s science, math, elective classes and athletic teams in his ten years of teaching and coaching at Sanford School. Jim’s students benefited from his creative lessons, intuitive nature, guidance, and mentorship in and out of the classroom. Jim was a leader who led by example. He was not afraid to make mistakes and permitted his students to do the same. This was a quality that made Jim special and encouraged strong student connections.

Jim provided real-world problem-solving opportunities that encouraged students to stretch themselves and work productively with others. Students remember his innovative projects, including crafting bamboo poles for fishing in the Sanford pond, mouse trap car races, bottle rocket launches, and the Alka Seltzer Lab, and also for unintentionally setting off the fire alarm at least once a year.

Jim was a school leader who did what he loved. His classes provided children with problem-based learning opportunities that fostered flexibility, originality, independent thinking, and collaboration. Students discovered more about themselves as they interpreted the problems at hand. He encouraged his students to take risks and figure things out in a fair and safe environment. Sanford is a better place because of Jim Barnaby.”

SANFORD THANKS

Wendy Nashed and Coleen Miller are two of the most remarkably gifted teachers that I had the pleasure of working alongside during my tenure as Head of Sanford’s Middle School. When I was asked to write in celebration of Wendy’s retirement, it became apparent that I needed to include Coleen in the equation as they were a collective team. Their connectivity with one another and their colleagues is rarely seen and worthy of a united commemoration.

Both Wendy and Colleen have a unique willingness to unselfishly give their time and energy with little appreciation from anyone. They did this because they understood the behind-the-scenes teamwork that ultimately benefits the children. Wendy and Coleen’s innate maternal skills provided a loving and caring homeroom and classroom environment for all students. They were deeply committed to the whole child.

Wendy and Coleen sought the newest insight and advancements. Both teachers pushed their students to challenge themselves to limits that exceeded expectations and offered help to those who faltered to ensure every student succeeded. Wendy and Coleen always challenged their students to discover an answer rather than providing them with the quick-fix solutions.

Wendy and Coleen’s students were paramount in every aspect of their professional and personal lives. The time and energy they committed to the week went far beyond the expectations of anyone except themselves.

As educators, the impact of our work can be best measured by the success and subsequent feedback that we receive from our former students when they return to campus with words of gratitude. As children reflect on their fifth-grade Sanford experience, they will fondly remember Wendy and Coleen’s gifts of empathy, patient listening abilities, and compassion.

With selfish sadness, I write about their retirement as it potentially signifies the end of an era for two of the most remarkable teachers and mentors I have known. During Wendy and Coleen’s years of service to Sanford School, they have made some of the most profound impacts and helped cast the successful trajectory for future generations.”

Joan Samonisky A Leader Among Leaders

At the end of the last school year, Sanford School icon Joan Samonisky retired from her career as an educator after spending the previous thirty-four years as a distinguished athletic director, coach, teacher, and administrator.

Joan made Sanford an exceptional place for many generations of families and students. Joan has graced Sanford with her positivity and love for education and has left an indelible impact on Warrior Nation.

In her tenure at Sanford, Joan epitomized what it meant to be an educator. Thirty years as an administrator and athletic director, twentytwo years as a head coach, and countless contributions to our school community, Joan was a Sanford Giant. She was organized, passionate, loyal, reliable, and highly respected.

Joan was instrumental in establishing and developing a solid preschool through sixth-grade physical education program that progressed into competitive athletics for seventh through twelfth grade students. For her commitment, dedication, and excellence, she was honored as a recipient of the Sanford School’s Founders Day Award in 2017, inducted into the Sanford School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022, and had the field hockey and lacrosse fields named in her honor at this year’s homecoming.

A leader among leaders, Joan served as a member of the DIAA Board of Directors and several state tournament committees. In addition, she played a huge role in developing policies and legislation for interscholastic athletics in the state of Delaware and on a national level.

I am truly blessed to have been able to work with Joan and learn from her. Under Joan’s direction, Sanford’s philosophical approach to athletics embodied the intrinsic lessons learned from being a team member. The concepts of teamwork, the spirit of cooperation, the understanding of fair play, and the way to win and lose with graciousness were always stressed by coaches, teachers, players, and fans.

While we had many successes, I bet Joan is equally proud of our streak of consecutive DIAA Sportsmanship Awards. As basketball coaching legend John Wooden said, ‘A leader’s most powerful ally is his or her own example.’ Joan, you are a model of excellence.”

-Stan Waterman, Former Upper School Dean and Head Boys’ Basketball Coach

“Ms. Sam, you may have retired from Sanford, but your legacy lives on. Your time here has left an impression on all of us. Thank you for all you have done for all the athletes and the Sanford Community.”

-Audrey Everett ‘23

“In my mind, Sanford’s sterling reputation for sportsmanship is a direct result of Joan Samonisky’s exemplary leadership.”

-Mark Anderson, Head of School

Annual Report of Giving 2021-2022

17 FALL 2022 Endless Possibilities...Unique Outcomes

Dear Sanford Community,

As a Sanford alumna, I am often asked what has changed since I graduated in 2002. That’s an easy question with a complex answer — everything has changed, yet nothing has. The buildings have changed, most have been renovated or are completely new. The faces have changed, very few of my former teachers are still in the classroom. Teaching and learning have changed, all for the better. But what hasn’t changed is the heart of Sanford. We are a school where individuals are seen and celebrated and where our community is based on kindness and respect.

Sanford always rises to meet the challenges of the times. Most recently, we responded to a global pandemic while navigating political and racial divides. Our community rallied to keep students in school and support families through the chaos. In true Sanford fashion, we came together to do what’s best for kids, families, and educators.

The following pages are one example of how we came together. The 2021-2022 Annual Fund raised a school record of over $650,000. These gifts are put to use every day on campus through technology enhancements, performing arts opportunities, professional development for faculty, athletic equipment, and financial assistance to make the Sanford experience a reality for more families.

Thank you for your continued support of the Annual Fund. Without your generosity, Sanford would not be the school that it is. Each gift makes a difference in the lives of students. Your support makes it possible for me to say that the heart of Sanford remains the same.

With gratitude,

Dear Sanford Community,

When we think of the Sanford community over the past couple of years, the word that comes to mind is resilience. As the world tackled the challenges of COVID-19, the Sanford community did what we do best — remained flexible, focused on students, and faced the rapidly changing conditions head-on. Teachers changed everything from how they approached the curriculum to how students sat in their classrooms. Students learned new ways of being kids and going to school. School leaders stepped in to support wherever needed — from covering classes or refilling hand sanitizer machines. Everyone pulled together to keep our community safe and learning together.

During this time, Sanford’s enrollment increased by over 70 students, and our community showed its generous support, which led to a record-breaking annual fund total of over $650,000. The resilience of our community shined through, and our success is never final.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Sanford. Here’s to another great school year of coming together to support our kids, their teachers, and the school we love.

With gratitude,

Sincerely,

EVERGREEN SOCIETY

The Evergreen Society is representative of the Sanford Pine, the school‘s ubiquitous symbol. The society recognizes the commitment members of our community make by choosing to secure the school‘s future through a planned gift or including Sanford as a charitable recipient in their will.

The symbolism of the evergreen conveys that the gift these members bestow upon the school will, in fact, provide both shelter and color throughout all seasons of the school‘s life – through both the beautiful springs of renewal, the spectacular colors of the fall, and the harshest winters. These seasons parallel not only the life of the student body within a school year, but a school within its life cycle. Through these seasons, the evergreen remains a fixed constant, tall, straight and proud. Those who become members of the Evergreen Society are indeed securing that constancy.

Listed below are the members of the Evergreen Society, including those whose generous pledges have been fulfilled.
