BEAUTY

Ask the Expert Five Steps to Refresh For a healthy sheen in 2013, French skincare expert Christine Clais advises committing to a simple five-step beauty regime to revitalize tired skin.

1

Cleanse, moisturise and use a sunscreen daily. Quality skincare products can prevent common skin problems and delay skin ageing. You don’t have to spend hours on your skin, but you do need to maintain a regular topical skincare regime for the best results.

2

Exfoliate every week. Skin exfoliation leaves your skin looking fresher, smoother and younger-looking, and helps absorption of active ingredients in the serums and moisturisers that you apply on your skin afterwards. Make it a habit!

3

Use a facial mask at least once a week. Facial masks can make a noticeable difference to the way your skin looks. Depending on the ingredients, masks can purify, soothe, hydrate and stimulate the skin, giving it a refined and refreshed appearance.

4

Eliminate added sugar from your diet. Hidden sugars can create a refined carbohydrate overload and create a chemical reaction called glycation that negatively impacts on the dermis. This damages the skin’s precious collagen and elastin fibres crucial to retaining a youthful look.

5

Take time to relax. Stress switches the body to fight-or-flight mode – a survival mechanism that directs blood to the heart and muscles at the expense of the digestive system and skin. This can deprive the skin of nutrients and oxygen, making it susceptible to ageing.

Priceline Banana Boat Mineral Protect SPF 30+ Sunscreen, $16.99

BOOKS

Book + Chair + Cuppa Vaddey Ratner’s novel evokes memories of a war watched from afar for Sharon Rhodes. I remember very clearly images of the Vietnam War on our small black and white television. I would watch the 6pm news and my grandmother would comment on how lucky we were to live in a peaceful country. The joke is that the country was Zimbabwe. Raami, the narrator of In The Shadow of the Banyan is a seven year-old girl, exactly the same age as I was when I watched images of Chinook helicopters blowing palm trees along roads lined with people carrying their possessions on their backs. I have always been interested in human survival stories. I am equally fascinated by the evil that lurks in our society. This book covers both bases. A beautiful, aristocratic family have a dreamy life in a lovely house with courtyards and fruit trees, servants, poetry and love; which is snatched away and destroyed forever. Through the character of Raami, the author shares her own experience of the communist revolution in Cambodia, and also honours her father, who gave himself to the Khmer Rouge to save his family. Raami, her mother and sister endure forced labour camps, starvation and witness their culture and stories being suppressed and destroyed. Relationships and attachments are systematically broken as a way of crushing the human spirit, and destroying the old culture. But young Raami has a big heart and a sharp mind. She learns quickly when to be silent. She stores her memories deep inside, knowing they will keep her hope alive. The family’s goal is to make it to a refugee camp in Thailand, and eventually to find a new life in the US. This is a moving and beautiful book that celebrates the value of stories and poetry on every page.
