Book + Chair + Cuppa CLASSIC EROTICA Long before Fifty Shades of Grey, Anais Nin was writing beautifully crafted erotica stories.

Paige Kilponen reports As Fifty Shades of Grey casts its musky spell over those in search of a raunchy read, I can’t help measuring it up against the sublime erotica of Anais Nin. Her dalliance with sensual writing began in Paris in the 1940s when she was short on francs and wrote steamy stories for an anonymous collector for a dollar a page.

Her graphic short stories explore the surreal and often forbidden deliciousness of female sexuality, desire, fetishism, lesbianism, penis worship and sometimes, even love. Her two most famous collections of erotic stories Delta of Venus and Little Birds, published after her death in 1977, offer a fullflavoured selection of sexual scenarios featuring well-drawn characters from schoolgirls to streetwalkers.

The beauty of Nin’s work lies in her uniquely female perspective on sexuality. Her descriptive and superbly crafted prose can be raw, primal and sometimes brutal yet there is an underlying sensuality common to every story.

Delta of Venus features a story entitled ‘Linda’ in which a disenchanted Parisian housewife accepts an invitation to a masked orgy. Nin masterfully arouses the reader’s, ah, imagination with this description of what Linda encounters upon arrival. “Two men would set about teasing a woman into a frenzy and then stop merely to enjoy the sight of her, with

her dress half undone, a shoulder strap

fallen, a breast uncovered…”

Romancing the Screen Whether it’s date night or girls’ night, nothing beats a romantic DVD. Mercifully Short Reviews’ Jonathan Empson picks four flicks that are worth staying in for.

Bridesmaids A female Hangover, but funnier.

Annie (Kristen Wiig, who’s also the wriiiter) lost her busiiiiness and boyfriiiiiend (I’ll stop now) in the GFC, and is barely getting by in a dead-end job, having empty sex with a rich tool (John Hamm) and sharing a house with an English tool (Matt Lucas). Then her best friend Lillian gets engaged and Annie is forced to be happy for her – and help organise her wedding. But Annie has bff competition from wealthy and pristine Helen (Rose Byrne). Will Annie lose Lillian as well as everything else?

He’s so right for her... JB Hi-Fi Bridesmaid DVD, $15.98 This surprising comedy swings from puerile (but still funny) ensemble set pieces to touching, naturalistic moments as Annie hits rock bottom, then a lower, rockier bottom. The cast is great – especially Melissa McCarthy (the Ricky Gervais lookalike from Mike & Molly), and Chris O’Dowd (the Irish nerd from The IT Guys) as Annie’s surprisingly believable romantic interest.

Beautiful Lies Emilie (Audrey Tautou) runs a hairdressing salon and always knows what’s best for everyone, even when she doesn’t. She can’t get her mother to move on from her divorce from Emilie’s father years before, and she is oblivious to the infatuation of Jean (Sami Bouajila), the shy handyman, who’s actually a lot smarter than anyone realises. Jean pens an anonymous love letter to Emilie, which she swiftly bins before changing her mind, recycling the contents and sending it to her mother instead. Crossed-wires comedy ensues.

If you liked Priceless from the same writing team (Benoît Graffin and Pierre Salvadori), you’ll enjoy this too. There’s real humanity behind the farce, and it throws in a few plot surprises. Bouajila is miscast and a bit bovine and inert, but Tautou would be watchable Sami Bouajila and Audrey Tautou. Fishpond Beautiful Lies DVD, $14.99 cleaning a septic tank (her, not me).

The Skin I Live In Robert (Antonio Banderas), a brilliant plastic surgeon, keeps the beautiful Vera (Elena Anaya) prisoner in his house, where she’s forced to wear a body suit in an unflattering flesh tone. Robert is developing a tough, fire-resistant synthetic skin. His wife died several years earlier, a fact that obsesses Robert.

This entertaining mystery – it never quite gets into thriller territory – employs a shifting timeline to trickle out the facts and connections. It’s Pedro Almodóvar, so expect melodrama, soap-opera plot twists, black humour and a whole chocolate box of sexual transgression.

Beautiful people on fab sheets – what’s not to love? Sanity The Skin I Live In DVD, $29.99

Jane Eyre

No bodices were ripped in the making of this film. Sanity Jane Eyre DVD, $24.99

Poor but bolshie governess Jane (Mia Wasyacallit, or possibly Wasikowska) flees the dark, brooding Thornfield Hall and its dark, brooding occupant, Mr Rochester (Michael Fassbender). She trudges across dark, brooding and very wet moors until she collapses at the door of a clergyman, St John Rivers (Jamie Bell). (Who is not an actual saint, as evidenced by the fact that he’s alive. The name is pronounced ‘Singin’, as in singin’ your eyebrows, not as in singin’ in the rain.) St John, despite his suitably damp surname, is clearly not dark and brooding enough to be the romantic interest here.

The story of Jane’s cruel upbringing and arrival at Thornfield is then told in flashback, leading up to the discovery of Rochester’s dark (not brooding) secret. This is a top-notch adaptation, with the luminous Wasikowska absolutely perfect as a woman forced to hide her inner life, but refusing to be downtrodden. www.bellaloopa.com.au
