Book + Chair + Cuppa THE J. M. BARRIE LADIES’ SWIMMING SOCIETY Sharon Rhodes dips into a delightful tale that bubbles with heart-warming friendships and romance.
I’m not one for swimming in freezing ponds, especially when the frozen surface has to be broken up with a sturdy pole; however, the description in The J. M. Barrie Ladies’ Swimming Society by Barbra J. Zitwer of the euphoria this madness induces has made me curious. This delightful story is about friendship, forgiveness and love among women with a penchant for the aforementioned madness. Joey Rubin, a high-flying single architect from New York, arrives in the Cotswolds to oversee the restoration of Stanway House, the stately home that inspired J. M. Barrie to write Peter Pan. Joey meets a group of elderly English ladies who have committed to lifelong love and support of each other, which highlights Joey’s lack of deep and lasting friendships and a yearning for connectedness. The ladies of the J. M. Barrie Ladies’ Swimming Society enjoy a daily ritual of meeting and swimming in the Stanway pond, which becomes their Neverland. Joey is invited into the group and quickly learns the secrets of the locals. She also meets the handsome caretaker of the estate, who is not happy about an American company turning the house into a “theme park”. Joey has to convince him that she will be sensitive to the heritage of the house, and in the process they fall in love. As with all good love stories, they must overcome several obstacles before they have any chance of being together. The plot and characters come together in a charming, easy way. This book is a light, effortless read – the perfect novel to pack for a seaside holiday.

DIY Wreath A wreath on the front door is a welcome reminder that Christmas is nigh. Marilyn Mortlock shows you how to make a wreath to keep You’ll need: • • • •
Wire cutters • Scissors • Skewer • Florist’s wire Sticky tape • 35cm Styrofoam wreath base 5 x Christmas ornaments • Metallic gold wired ribbon White and gold tissue paper (available from newsagents)
Step 1
Spray paint or paint the wreath base with gold paint.

To make the six flowers: • For each flower, cut 4x gold and 4x white tissue 175 x 175mm paper squares, • Layer alternate white and gold tissue squares in a star pattern. • Place a piece of sticky tape in centre front and back of the star and make a hole with skewer. • Place a decoration in the centre of each of five of the stars and push through and attach a double length of florist’s wire. Crush paper into flower shape. • Make a bow with the gold wired ribbon, place in centre of the last paper star and secure with florist’s wire at the back. Crush paper into flower shape. Punch holes through the Styrofoam wreath base in 6 equidistant places with a skewer.
Step 3
Position five paper flowers around the wreath. Place the flower with the bow at the bottom.Push florist’s wire through the pre-prepared holes to the back of the Styrofoam and secure.
